All That Glittered: The Golden Age of Drama on Broadway, 1919-1959, by Ethan Mordden

From the late 1920s to late 1950s, the Broadway theatre was America's cultural epicenter. Television didn't exist and movies were novelties. Entertainment took the form of literature, music, and theatre. During this golden age of Broadway, actors and actresses became legends and starred in now classic plays. Laurence Olivier, Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontaine were names to remember, etching plays into memory as they brought the words of Tennessee Williams or Eugene O'Neill to life. Joseph Cotton romanced Katherine Hepburn in Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story while Laurette Taylor became The Glass Menagerie's Amanda Wingfield.  Frederic March, Florence Eldridge, Jason Robards Jr. and Bradford Dillman showed us life among the ruins in Long Day's Journey Into Night. In All That Glittered, Ethan Mordden, long one of Broadway's best chroniclers, recreates the fascinating lost world of its golden age.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Acclaimed for his sprightly histories of the Broadway musical, the author turns to nonmusical theater in this scintillating survey. Mordden considers New York theater the wellspring of mid-century American culture, especially during the 1930s, when the advent of talkies forced a Hollywood desperate for material to ransack Broadway for scripts—and the talent that could bring their dialogue to life. Thus, he contends, "West-Central Manhattan" remade America in its own image—urban, sophisticated and racy, presided over by the wisecracking reporter and "that ubiquitous 1930s character, the Unmarried Sarcastic Woman," and tinged with an ironic gay sensibility. Mordden brings out his themes in an anecdote-strewn tour of significant (and some not so significant) productions, pausing now and again for set-piece drama criticism—comparing O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, for example, with Rachel Crothers's comedy Susan and God—and perpetually tossing off witty asides (the sublimely square actor Ralph Bellamy, he observes, "brings the Clueless Hetero to a completion so absolute that [he] creates something never before thought possible or even necessary: the opposite of Kabuki"). Erudite, but casual and conversational, and full of fresh perceptions, Mordden is a charmingly insightful raconteur who condenses 40 years' worth of opening nights into a single engrossing montage. From Booklist
Having chronicled the Broadway musical from its 1920s first flowering (Make Believe, 1997) to its current lackluster state (The Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen, 2004), Mordden turns to nonmusical theater on the same Manhattan street during much the same period. He admits to cutting a large swath, from George M. Cohan to Tennessee Williams, yet the book doesn't feel rushed or shallow, thanks largely to his witty, compulsively readable style and knack for finding the right figures to focus on in each era. Mordden is a master at revealing the web of aesthetic and business connections just beneath the surface of developments. His discussion of powerful columnist Walter Winchell, for example, begins as a rather routine sketch of one man and ends in a fascinating group portrait of the rogues, saints, and others who populated Broadway--and Damon Runyan's prose. Expectedly, perhaps, all roads lead back to the musical. When discussing 1920s theater, Mordden pays special attention to Sweeney Todd and Chicago, plays known today only because of their transformations into noteworthy musicals. Jack Helbig

Mordden Does It Again
By J Scott Morrison
Ethan Mordden has written many books on the topic of Broadway, although generally they have been about the musical stage. This time he writes about plays, (mostly) without music, and rather arbitrarily defines, perhaps for purposes of symmetry, its golden age as the period between 1919 and 1959 (although he can't help himself and goes on into the 1960s a bit). As usual one is amazed at his encyclopedic knowledge of Broadway history; one can imagine him spending weeks and months, perhaps even years, in dusty libraries reading all those old copies of Variety, Playbill and the New York newspapers. His all-but-copyrighted bitchiness is much in evidence and gave me more than a few chuckles. His penchant for pointing who was gay among the actors, authors and directors, and for finding gay themes where they aren't obvious, is prominent.

He chronicles the Broadway spoken play by decade and finds something characteristic about each period. I found his writing, always sparkling, becomes more so when he gets to the 1940s and beyond, perhaps because those plays and the people who made them are within living memory for many people. Clearly Mordden (who is right at sixty, although his glamorous never-changing dustjacket picture hasn't changed in at least two decades) has had personal contact with many of the people mentioned in those latter years and he has some tales to tell.

Included are some pretty obscure plays and we are all the more informed for that. He writes much about the important actors, writers, producers and directors and we pick up a lot of theater lore as a result. His writing style is dense with fact and sometimes hermetic but it always dances along. I had difficulty putting the book down.

Another valuable book by Mordden, possibly primarily for specialists but assimilable by the casual reader with even a modicum of interest in the subject.

A fascinating retrospective on the role of Broadway in American culture
By Elkhart
I love theatre history, but Mordden is such a fine writer that I will read his "History of Plumbing" should he write one.

Unlike his essential seven-volume chronicle of the musical, this is not a show-by-show description. Instead, Mordden takes a thematic approach, insightfully linking the development of the Broadway play to broader cultural developments. The shift from rural to urban humor, the relationship between Broadway and Hollywood, and the role of theatre as educator to the unsophisticated are among his compelling through-lines. Despite my unfamiliarity with most of the titles referenced, this is a great read.

Play Time
By enubrius
Ethan Mordden is probably best known for three things: the impossibility of remembering how to spell his last name; the width and depth of his subject matter; and his encyclopedic knowledge of musical theater. To all this, we can now add a fourth; an almost equally deep knowledge of "straight" (in the theatrical sense) drama. While it is arguable as to whether the golden age began in 1919 and ended in 1959, Mordden's treatment of this span is as exciting and insightful as any of his other critical studies and that, as his readers know, is saying a lot! (Aside to Mr. Mordden: The title "Beggar on Horseback" may be more closely related to the saying, "If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride."... just a thought). Oh, and the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is to have somewhere to go for the next time.

Born to Rule: Five Reigning Consorts, Granddaughters of Queen Victoria, by Julia P. Gelardi

Julia Gelardi's Born to Rule is an historical tour de force that weaves together the powerful and moving stories of the five royal granddaughters of Queen Victoria. These five women were all married to reigning European monarchs during the early part of the 20th century, and it was their reaction to the First World War that shaped the fate of a continent and the future of the modern world.

Here are the stories of Alexandra, whose enduring love story, controversial faith in Rasputin, and tragic end have become the stuff of legend; Marie, the flamboyant and eccentric queen who battled her way through a life of intrigues and was also the mother of two Balkan queens and of the scandalous Carol II of Romania; Victoria Eugenie, Spain's very English queen who, like Alexandra, introduced hemophilia into her husband's family-with devastating consequences for her marriage; Maud, King Edward VII's daughter, who was independent Norway's reluctant queen; and Sophie, Kaiser Wilhelm II's much maligned sister, daughter of an Emperor and herself the mother of no less than three kings and a queen, who ended her days in bitter exile.

Born to Rule evokes a world of luxury, wealth, and power in a bygone era, while also recounting the ordeals suffered by a unique group of royal women who at times faced poverty, exile, and death. Praised in their lifetimes for their legendary beauty, many of these women were also lauded-and reviled-for their political influence. Using never before published letters, memoirs, diplomatic documents, secondary sources, and interviews with descendents of the subjects, Julia Gelardi's Born to Rule is an astonishing and memorable work of popular history.

From Publishers Weekly
This lively page-turner covers the 100-year period between the birth of Queen Maud of Norway in 1869 and the death of Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain in 1969. Suffering only from the inevitable repetition and melodramatic foreshadowing caused by the five-in-one setup of this biography, Gelardi's book features liberal quotations from fascinating correspondence and diaries that reveal both the intimate and the public faces of the women featured. Tales of the girls' romances and weddings spice up the early pages, followed by descriptions of marital relationships, childbirths and the early seeds of conflict-both personal and political. World War I and the Bolshevik revolution dominate the third part of the book, after which Gelardi describes the poignant twilight years of the four granddaughters who lived past the end of the Great War. Lurking behind these stories is the legacy of Queen Victoria, the cruelty of Kaiser Wilhelm in Germany and the specter of hemophilia. It is Marie, "Missy," who plays the favorite in the book, just as she did as Queen of Romania. More than the others, she inherited her grandmother's will, charisma, generosity and political acumen, along with the ability to adapt to changing times and circumstances. The granddaughters were "raised in an era where responsibility, commitment, sacrifice and duty before self were elevated as the highest ideals and embodied admirably by their grandmother," but the era that encompassed their rule would see the decline in monarchy throughout Europe as citizens of various countries came to believe that it was not the divine will of God that appointed their leaders, but the will-wise or foolish-of the people.

Review
"Five cousins. Five fascinating lives. Julia Gelardi writes about her subjects with verve and passion."
- Dr. Amanda Foreman, author of Georgina: Duchess of Devonshire

"This fascinating story of five princesses ends with one murdered, two in exile, one in distress, and one content. They all made sacrifices to fulfill dynastic demands, and unlike Ambassadors who move about, they were committed for life."
- Hugo Vickers, author of the critically acclaimed biography Alice and The Unexpurgated Beaton

"Julia Gelardi has mastered well the complex craft-within-craft of writing dynastic history. Her multi-stranded story moves smoothly, presenting vivid pictures not only of the momentous and tragic lives of five women, but also of the extraordinary privileged but confined world of doomed European monarchy."
- Derek Wilson, author of All the King's Women and In the Lion's Court: Power, Ambition, and Sudden Death in the Reign of Henry VIII

"A wonderful story, and an enormously impressive piece of research. Julia Gelardi has drawn together the stories of these five queens and kinswomen to give fresh perspective on the turbulent early decades of the twentieth century."
- Sarah Gristwood, author of the critically acclaimed Arbelia: England's Lost Queen and Perdita

"Gelardi tells a compelling story of five of Queen Victoria's granddaughters who became queens themselves. Alongside the oft-told and tragic story of Alexandra, the last Tsarina of Russia, are skillfully woven the tales of Maud of Norway, Sophie of Greece and Ena of Spain, each of whom led remarkable lives. Most fascinating, though, were the adventures of Marie of Romania, the archetypal romantic royal beauty. The author takes us on a tumultuous and enjoyable journey through the lives of five royal women, as they each in their own way attempted to survive 'the Era of the Fall of Eagles.' "
- Leonie Frieda, author of Catherine de Medici

"Julia Gelardi has brought these 5 queens to vivid life, using much fascinating contemporary material and the voices of the women themselves. At the heart of the convulsions of early 20th century Europe, this interwoven story is a rollercoaster of human tragedy and spirited renewal. All five women repay Gelardi's extensive research and affectionate narrative but Marie of Romania stands out as remarkably heroic; compassionate to the impoverished, diseased and dying, courageous in everything, she was nevertheless determined to fill her own life to the brim with adventure and love."
- Jane Dunn, author of Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens

Some good editing might have helped this book
By JP
This could have been a good read but for a couple issues:

1. There were several quotes in French; however, the notes were not linked to the translations.
2. Said notes were at the end of the book, rather than at the end of each chapter, which means that when I was at 72% of my reading, the book was finished. The notes took up 28% of the book!
3. The author provided many quotes. Rather than provide the quote and provide a note at the end of it, this author chose to correct &/or "sic" each and every abbreviation &/or misspelling within the quote! E.g., if there was a letter that said, "HM went to Viena last August," the author printed it as H[er] M[ajesty] went to Viena [sic] last August." I found that far more distracting than helpful.

A Nice Glimpse of A Vanished World
By John D. Cofield
Born to Rule is a joint biography of five royal consorts, all first cousins and granddaughters of Queen Victoria, who reigned over their countries during the early to mid twentieth century. Although Maud of Norway (called Harry in the family), Sophie of Greece, Victoria Eugenie of Spain (Ena), Alexandra of Russia (Alix), and Marie of Rumania (Missy) were cousins who knew each other fairly well, their personalities and ultimate fates were very different.

Most readers will be at least somewhat familiar with Alix's story, which has been told and retold many times on paper and on film, but Ena's struggles with the same hereditary disease of hemophilia, which she passed on to at least two of her sons, are less well known than those of her Russian cousin. Similarly, while the story of Alix's overthrow in the 1917 Revolution and her subsequent death with her family has been described at length, few readers will be as familiar with Ena's long exile from Spain and Sophie's on again off again career as Queen of Greece. Harry's great success as the democratically chosen monarch of Norway and Missy's extensive struggles on behalf of Rumania deserve to be remembered as well.

One of the most interesting achievements of this joint biography are the numerous parallels and comparisons that can be drawn between the five women. We can see, for example, how Harry's natural modesty and informality made the Norwegians fall in love with her, and how Missy's beauty and elegance endeared her to the Rumanians. On the other hand, Sophie, Alix, and Ena's shyness and natural reserve were not well received by their husband's subjects and helped lead to the downfalls of the monarchies in their countries. The cousins' origins outside of the countries they eventually ruled were also worthy of comparison. Alix and Sophie's German blood were black marks against them (poor Sophie was on the outs with the Greeks for being German, and with her brother the Kaiser for not being German enough!), as was Ena's English reserve in Spain. As far as homelife goes, Alix seems to have had the only genuine love match among the five, since Sophie and Missy were married off for political considerations (to husbands they eventually came to love or at least respect), Ena for generally the same reasons (to a husband she eventually came to detest), and Harry married her cousin primarily to avoid being an old maid (but had a happy marriage regardless).

Of all these women only Harry has been consistently remembered with love and respect by her adopted country. Alix and Ena have been rehabilitated to a degree by the twists and turns of twentieth century history in their countries, and while Sophie and Missy are practically forgotten in Greece and Rumania today, it is to be hoped that their many contributions will eventually be recalled in Athens and Bucharest.

None of these women were well educated or exceptionally intelligent, but the circumstances of their births and marriages gave them influence at a critical moment in world history. Born to Rule enables us to remember them and to better understand their impact.

Another Page Turner!!!
By Diamond's Literary World
The author told me that I would like this book, and he was not seeing. I fell in love with Rio from page 3, and admired his commitment to his relationship with Trinity. Many tried to make him stay, he has a slip up or two, but continued to protect her and provide for her. He even tried to leave the streets alone, but one fateful night changed all of that, and the rest, as they say…is history.

Once again, K'wan did not disappoint his readers with his gift for details and character development. There were a few times I wanted to slap a few characters throughout the book, until I realized they were fictional. And the ending…let's just that I cried like a baby. Good job Mr. Foye!

The fourteenth tale in Dewey Lambdin’s classic naval adventure series

Spring of 1800, and Captain Alan Lewrie, fresh from victory in the South Atlantic, is reckoned a hero on a par with Nelson in all the papers. Back in England, he’s fitting out his new frigate, HMS Savage, the fruits of that victory, the largest and best-armed frigate he’s ever commanded. But you can’t leave Lewrie ashore too long without trouble arising.

A Jamaica court has tried him in absentia and sentenced him to hang for the theft of a dozen Black slaves to man his old ship, HMS Proteus. A crime, or was it liberation, as his London barrister argues? The vengeful slaveowner, Hugh Beauman, has come to London to seek Lewrie’s end . . . with or without the majesty of the Law!

Then there’s the matter of those anonymous letters sent to his wife, Caroline, portraying him as a faithless rakehell and serving up the most florid lies . . . along with some unfortunately florid truths. Lewrie appeals to the “retired” Foreign Office spy, Zachariah Twigg, to “smoak out” the hand that guides the poison pen, even while wondering why Twigg seems so eager to help his legal case, of a sudden. Is the devious old devil ready to sacrifice him for some motive of his own?

A fortunate legal ruling, which only delays the matter of Lewrie’s utter ruin, leaves him free to take Savage to sea upon the King’s business, to join the close blockade of the Gironde River in Sou’west France, and plug the threat of enemy warships, privateers, and  neutrals smuggling goods in and out of Bordeaux. It could be a dull and plodding dreariness, but . . . a bored Captain Alan Lewrie, safe in his post for the moment, can be a dangerous fellow to his country’s foes. If only to relieve the tedium!

From Publishers Weekly
During the Napoleonic Wars, Royal Navy Capt. Alan Lewrie (Sea of Grey) finds that he has been sentenced to death in absentia by a Jamaican kangaroo court for stealing slaves, and is pursued to England by enemies trying to carry out that sentence. As the famously byzantine British legal system grinds on, Lewrie becomes a cause célèbre among William Wilberforce's abolitionists, who hire a hotshot barrister to defend Lewrie. While waiting for his case to come up, Lewrie (released until then because of his social standing) returns to H.M.S. Savage, now on blockade duty off southwest France. He quickly turns a dull assignment on its ears by organizing an amphibious raid against fortifications on the French coast while dealing with an old rival with a grudge and a secret. Lambdin manages to make the Bleak House–like British legal system of the era comprehensible to the layman, while his mastery of period naval warfare gives his battles real punch. (Jan.)

Dewey Lambdin is the author of thirteen previous Alan Lewrie novels and an omnibus volume, For King and Country. A member of the U.S. Naval Institute and a Friend of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, Lambdin has been a sailor since 1976, and he spends his free time working and sailing. Total waste of money and time
By Andrew R. Ellis
Ho hum. I think it's time this series swallows the anchor. Mostly boring. There was a chance for a good adventure with the slave owners chasing the brave captain....but alas the author dropped the ball. What to do with the book? Donate it to the unsuspecting.

Bone Mountain: A Novel (Inspector Shan Tao Yun), by Eliot Pattison

Deep in the heart of Tibet, Shan Tao Yun, an exiled Chinese national and a former Beijing government Inspector, is caught between the brutal Chinese army and a Western oil company. Shan has agreed to lead an expedition to return the eye of an idol, stolen almost a century ago and recently, clandestinely recovered, to a distant valley, an act that will fulfill an important Tibetan prophecy. But the pilgrimage turns into a desperate flight when the monk who is to lead them is murdered. Shan also discovers that the stone was stolen back from a brigade of the Chinese army that is now in hot pursuit.

Still possessing an investigator's love of truth, Shan faces a perplexing tangle of mysteries. Why are the Chinese so desperate to retrieve the stone eye, why has an American geologist abandoned the oil company's drilling project and fled into the mountains, and why are rumors sweeping the countryside that an ancient lama is returning to liberate this country? As he digs into these questions, Shan realizes that there is more at stake than mere justice: the spiritual survival of his people is in danger as well.

Complex and compelling, Bone Mountain is a spectacular achievement from a major voice in crime fiction.

Amazon.com Review
Shan, an ex-police inspector who spent years in a Chinese prison, is the intriguing protagonist of this literary thriller set in the stunning and rarely portrayed landscape of modern Tibet. While Shan's search for a stolen sacred relic in a Himalayan valley whose underground wealth is the center of explorations by a Sino-American oil consortium provides the novel's central plot, the real crime, Beijing's efforts to eradicate the remnants of Tibet's spiritual and cultural heritage, is more fully and engagingly portrayed. The central motif of the novel--Shan's travels with a salt caravan, at first guarding and then searching for the relic after it mysteriously disappears-- becomes a journey toward enlightenment whose denouement is more than worth the trip for readers who opt to suspend disbelief and travel with Shan and his companions to the centuries-old cave of the medicine lamas. Bone Mountain is a rich, complicated, and original exploration into the extraordinary power of belief, faith, and the triumph of the human spirit, as complex and compelling as Tibet itself. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
In this third suspenseful mystery-thriller from Edgar winner Pattison (The Skull Mantra; Water Touching Stone), discredited former Beijing police investigator Shan Tao Yun, unofficially released from a central Tibetan gulag, is now living with a group of outlaw Buddhist monks, some of whom helped him through his most unbearable prison experiences. In gratitude he and his friend, the renegade monk Lokesh, agree to escort a stolen religious artifact to the remote Yapchi Valley, the site, coincidentally, of international oil explorations, from which an American engineer has disappeared. Chinese plans to clear the valley and relocate its farmers and sheepherders to cities will profit the mining project and aid the Chinese "in another effort to pry Tibet's collective fingers from its rosary." Just as the holy artifact is a mystical symbol of Tibetan culture and Buddhism, so the multilayered story is imbued with Tibetan belief, civilization and politics. Readers with little knowledge of Tibet's religion and history may have difficulty following the plot with its large cast of varied, well-drawn Tibetans, Chinese and Americans, countless treks through rugged, stunning landscapes and the numerous side plots including several murders some of which are red herrings. Pattison's empathy for the cause of Tibetan independence is admirable, but it often overwhelms his story. The book, which is far too long and discursive, becomes a polemic that dilutes Shan's search for the truth.

From Library Journal
Edgar Award winner Pattison continues the adventures of Shan in this intense and captivating exploration of modern Tibet. Shan is on a pilgrimage when he witnesses the beating death of his friend Drakte. Shan is not one to let a crime go unpunished, so he goes after the murderer. During his investigation, he clashes with the Chinese 54th Mountain Brigade, an army whose leader would love to see Shan a prisoner again. In addition, he helps an American ambassador named Winslow look for a woman geologist who mysteriously vanished. The oil company she worked for is determined to obtain its product at any cost, even if it decimates land in the process. All these events converge against the background of a harsh landscape. Much like an sf, Pattison has taken an unknown world and made it come alive. For all fiction collections. Jeff Ayers, Seattle P.L.

A pause for book 3
By Chit-and-chat
The people of Tibet were the victims of Book 2; Book 3, with a fairly simple plot, focuses on the rape (and self-healing qualities) of Tibet, the land--its mountains, lakes, and those who lived in harmony with the land. The ostensible villains here are an international consortium of petroleum hunters, with Communist Party bureaucrats trying to use the exploration to advance their own petty political careers. Elements of Tibet Buddhist practices and culture, but not as "real" as those in Book 2.

This book transported me to Tibet
By Chymmie
Adventure, mystery, political intrigue, and a stunning setting combine for a thoroughly satisfying novel. I have been to Tibet and spoken with some of the people who have been imprisoned and experienced oppression from the Chinese. But I also met some eternally radiant people whose enlightened attitude uplifts all they encounter. This book took me back to Tibet. Enjoy the journey.

Tibetan realism
By Lokesh
This fourth volume of the Inspector Shan novels is just as insightful and intellectual as the other three. Through the eyes of Shan, a former high official in the Chinese government in Beijing sent to a concentration camp in Tibet under false charges, we experience Tibetan culture under the oppressive thumb of China as it literally tries to obliterate this culture. Those, who like Shan are seeking enlightenment, can emote with him as he attempts to shed his prior attachments and fully appreciate the impermanence of everything including himself. In contrast to Shan, we witness the glorius and unaffected approach to life of the lamas Gendun and Lokesh, the latter of which shared Shan's imprisonment. Their childlike fascination with the world about them remind us that we too should revel in the everyday life which surrounds us as well. While it can be hard to read about the atrocities committed by dispassionate, rigid Chinese authorities, each of Pattison's novels leave us with a sense of hope and a deeper understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. Despite the complexity and length of all his novels, they are worth every minute for the serious reader who seeks the truly unique novel.

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You: Aretha Franklin, Respect, and the Making of a Soul Music Masterpiece, by Matt Dobkin

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Aretha Franklin's first album for Atlantic Records and famed producer Jerry Wexler, was a pop and soul music milestone that jump-started Franklin's languishing career. Almost overnight, Aretha became a top-selling recording artist and a cultural icon. But the album almost didn't happen. Matt Dobkin has unearthed fascinating details about the recording session in Muscle Shoals, Alabama: about the volatile behavior of Aretha's manager/husband, Ted White; about Aretha's reaction to the lack of black musicians in the session; and about how tempers and alcohol almost derailed the session with only a track and half in the can.

This book goes far beyond anything that's been written about "The Queen of Soul" or her music before. I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You is the story of a great achievement and includes scores of fresh interviews: Wexler, the session men from Muscle Shoals, Aretha's own musicians, and others. It gives insight into a star more complex and determined than her modern diva image would seem to indicate. Aretha, a teenage mother and daughter of a commanding preacher father, rose above her circumstances and transformed them into art. She gave the civil rights movement, already well under way in 1967 when the album came out, a passionate call to arms. And with "Respect"-along with the title track, one of the album's first two singles-she provided the burgeoning feminist movement with an enduring theme song.

The first serious, nonbiographical look at Aretha Franklin's work, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You will deepen even ardent fans' understanding of one of the great soul artists of our time, a direct descendant of Bessie Smith and Billie Holliday.

From Booklist
Among the greatest singing voices ever recorded, Aretha Franklin's is so distinctive that the fact that the album that made her a star was her tenth is just dumbfounding. She essayed jazz singing for seven years under the sympathetic auspices of John Hammond, rediscoverer of Bessie Smith, discoverer of Billie Holiday, and organizer of the seminal Carnegie Hall "From Spirituals to Swing" concerts, but despite a fine first album, she had no hits. Then Atlantic Records' Jerry Wexler signed her, married her to the fine rhythm section--all twentysomething self-described rednecks--at Fame recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and ba-whommm! Dobkin gets seemingly every living soul responsible for Franklin's epoch-making album (save Aretha herself) to impart his or her perspective on its making. This involves much more than a track-by-track account of the recording sessions. Dobkin exuberantly, but never quite gushingly, relates Franklin's earlier life, other involvements, and the civil rights impact, for women as well as blacks, of the album's biggest hit, "Respect." A standout in the current crowd of classic-album histories. Ray Olson

"I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You," Aretha Franklin's first album for Atlantic Records and famed producer Jerry Wexler, was a pop and soul music milestone that jump-started Franklin's languishing career.

Very good book - Concentrates mostly on music!
By Music Lover
Just read this after finding it in the library. The book is mostly about the recording of Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved A Man" single and album. I love hearing the details about recording and music. The author has interviewed several of the original musicians, Jerry Wexler and even Ted White (Franklin's ex-husband).

The book doesn't try to make anyone out to be totally bad. I was impressed by the author's take on Ted White, not totally making him out to be the evil guy everyone said he was. I'm not saying he was perfect, just human with flaws.

There is a chapter on the so-called trouble that went along with the session. Just about everyone has had their say on what happened almost 40 years ago. The author wisely collects several different accounts and doesn't try to definitively define what happened.

I wish more people would write books about the music, rather than deal with the tabloid details of an artist's life. I understand that a person's personal life is woven into their life as an artist and I believe that the author balanaces out both in discussing Aretha Franklin, her life and music.

I thought is was very interesting to read about Franklin's musical influences. If you have never listened to Dinah Washington, you should check her out and hear how she influenced Aretha Franklin.

For music fans, this is a good read. Let's have more books like this regarding Motown and other soul music!

I Need Aretha
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
If there is anything that remains constant in my life, it is knowing that Aretha Franklin is a sister spirit and that her voice can help to calm me in the most torrential times. It seems that when I listen to Aretha she is speaking directly to me, telling me she knows what I am going through and that everything will turn out fine. Matt Dobkin revisits the recording of a 1967 album that shot Aretha Franklin to the highest level of stardom and changed the voice of soul music forever and changed my life forever.

I NEVER LOVED A MAN THE WAY I LOVE YOU is not just a biography. Instead, it is a detailed analysis of Aretha's rise to superstardom and the recording sessions during what some would argue is Aretha's finest hour. Dobkin interviewed many of the direct participants of the recording of I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You to inject the history needed to make telling this story a success. However, he also included thoughts from the great poet Nikki Giovanni (her descriptions of both Aretha's presence and the tumultuous era in question were remarkable) and other contemporaries of the Queen of Soul for added context.

The album, I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You, included such cuts as "Do Right Woman," "Save Me," "Dr. Feelgood," (one of my favorite Aretha songs) and the female anthem, "Respect," an Otis Redding song that Aretha covered and made her own. But, as Dobkin seems to relay, one of the most important aspects of this recording was that it was interracial; most of the musicians on the album were young white men from Muscle Shoals, Alabama or neighboring cities. Dobkin also notes that the musical process that was utilized on this album (Aretha at the piano, leading the show) would become her M.O. for making music from that day forward.

Aretha has numerous albums to her credit, ranging from a Dinah Washington tribute album, recorded during her stint at Columbia Records, to the Atlantic Records late-sixties masterpiece that is the focus of this book. Dobkin seemed to know what he was talking about when retelling the story of the album's birth, and he provided much needed groundwork to help the reader understand just how important that album was in 1967 and still is today. I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You ushered in the reign of the Queen of Soul and widely introduced this timeless voice to the favorites list of music lovers worldwide. Dobkin gave Aretha her demanded Respect and took it a step further by praising her musical virtuosity.

The stories behind the making of Respect, Dr. Feelgood, and I Never Loved a Man
By J-Rock
"I Never Loved a Man" is a music journalist's take on Aretha Franklin's groundbreaking album. Dobkin comes from a background in opera writing, and he writes with great appreciation and sensitivity about the music. You can tell that he enjoys listening to the music and trying to conquer the challenging task of describing tones with prose. He also interviews some of the key figures in the story such as Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, Aretha's ex-husband, Ahmet Ertegun, and many of the key performers on the album. He takes an informal tone at times with his interviewees and tries to go beyond reporting their reflections on the album and treating them as characters in themselves. Those interested in Jerry Wexler, the executive at Atlantic who produced the sessions, will gain from his perspective and the musicians' responses to hearing about Jerry Wexler.

I do differ with some of this author's interpretations. He seems to feel that Muscle Shoals' FAME Studios was a critical part of this album's sound. Dobson takes great pains early on in the book to stress the "three white men" who played important roles in making this music happen. In many cases, such as Wilson Pickett's work for Atlantic, Muscle Shoals and its integrated country influenced soul did provided a core studio sound. Yes, the musicians added key riffs to the tunes. Reading into some of the details of this book, however, we see that in many ways Aretha and her husband were key catalysts in radically altering the relationship between Jerry Wexler's Atlantic Records and FAME Studios. Dobkin does a good job of talking about "the incident" where the racial tensions between an all-white studio band and a redneck trumpet player lead to conflict and a fight with Aretha's husband. That led to an integrated band and a plot to steal FAME's musicians for Atlantic in the New York sessions that were later held to finish the album.

Regardless, Aretha would have made this kind of music with anyone. It's her church, her Dinah Washington, and her Clara Ward and the fire within her bones coming out at one time. I firmly believe that Aretha Franklin was a force of nature in the studio, and she, unlike other vocalists such as Diana Ross, would have achieved greatness with any quality studio support. She would have been Aretha at Stax or even RCA as long as the producer was smart enough to be like Jerry Wexler and largely get out of her freakishly gifted way. In many ways, the most feminist thing about these sides is that these are early examples of a woman producing herself in a male-dominated industry and then hitting a home-run with overwhelming chart-topping success. Unfortunately, Aretha did not have the business sense to carve out producer or co-producer credit for her efforts in bandleading and directing musicians until later on in her career.

Nikki Giovanni is a key voice in this book as well. For those who see her solely as "that black feminist poet", it's fun to see her as just a fan of the Queen of Soul.

Dobkin sums up his agenda early on in the book: to provide a snapshot of what Aretha when she was crowned Queen of Soul at Atlantic. Minor complaints aside, he does an excellent job providing a lasting testimony to a great vocalist, artist, and symbol of soul power. Here's hoping that Aretha opens up a little as she enters her twilight years and improves on her biography or a biographer can do justice to the full scope of her life. Until then, books like "I Never Loved a Man" will provide great insight into the nature of her gift.

Strongly recommended...

Dorks, Dweebs, Debutantes, and Jocks―Where would you fit in?

Being the new girl is tough―just ask sixteen-year-old Rio Jones. A New York transplant, Rio has no clue how she's going to fit in at her fancy new private school in Southern California. Plus, being late, overdressed, and named after a Duran Duran song doesn't make the first day any easier for her.

Then Rio meets Kristi. Beautiful, rich, and a cheerleader, Kristi is the queen bee of Newport Beach. And Kristi isn't friends with just anyone, so Rio is thrilled when she's invited to be part of the most exclusive, popular clique. Of course, like any club, Kristi and her friends have rules: Always smile (even if you don't mean it), always dress cute (and never repeat outfits), and always flirt (but only with jocks, preps, and rich college guys).

At first Rio is having a great time, but as she becomes more immersed in this jet-set crowd, she figures out there is one last rule that her new friends forgot to mention: Don't cross Kristi . . . in Alyson Noël's Art Geeks and Prom Queens.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Rio Jones, 16, doesn't have a clue how she is going to fit into her new Southern California private school. Just as she is about to drown in despair, she is rescued by a couple of geeks in AP Art who take her in hand. Then Kristi, the alpha female at the Newport Beach school, takes an interest in her, and Rio thinks her life is perfect–until she surpasses Kristi and learns the true meaning of revenge and the importance of being true to oneself. This plot line is summarily predictable, but that doesn't make the ride any less enjoyable. Rio is well drawn with believable inner dialogue, and the stereotyped popular crowd is so much fun to hate. Some mild drug use, sexual situations, and realistic profanity are included.–Morgan Johnson-Doyle, Sierra High School, Colorado Springs, CO

From Booklist
Gr. 9-12. "If my house was a high school then my mom would be the prom queen, my dad would be the brainiac, and I would be the big weirdo art geek." Sixteen-year-old Rio has just moved from New York to ritzy Southern California. She makes a few friends in her art class, including dazzling Jas, but dumps them after cheerleader Kristi embraces her. Her father, away on business, and her mother, a former model delighted with Rio's new designer makeover, are oblivious when Rio's position in the sex-and-drugs popular scene goes wrong. Then Rio summons help, exacts some sweet revenge, and returns to the friends (and family) she trusts. Fans of Gossip Girls and other series about the rich and gorgeous will recognize all the familiar elements here: designer labels, gleaming houses, and a model-perfect, central character drawn straight from the fashion fantasies of Teen Vogue. However, Noel, the author of Faking 19 (2005), writes with a bit more humor and authenticity than some of her chick-lit cotemporaries. Expect high demand and possible sequels. Gillian Engberg

Realistic narrator, but hard to like her
By small review
New girl Rio expects to be a social outcast in her new school, so she is surprised when Kristi, the beautiful queen-bee mean girl, invites Rio into her clique. Rio quickly sheds the artsy friends she made her first day and embraces Kristi's offer. But being friends with Kristi comes with strings: Rio must make sure she's dressed to meet Kristi's approval, she is only allowed to date boys Kristi approves of, she must embrace Kristi's drug and alcohol habits, and above all else, Rio cannot outshine Kristi. Rio is happy enough to comply, but when Rio's popularity begins to eclipse Kristi's, Kristi sets out to destroy Rio's social standing.

Filled with mean girl cattiness and teenage insecurities, Art Geeks and Prom Queens is a realistic portrayal of how a teenager in Rio's position would probably think, act, and feel. As a result, I can see why it has been included in recommended reading lists for so many schools. Rio's voice is believable and never sounded forced or like an adult trying too hard to sound like a teenager. Instead, I can completely believe that Rio is a real girl candidly describing a year in her life. In this regard, Art Geeks and Prom Queens will probably be a hit among its target audience (of which, I should point out, I do not fall into).

While Rio might ring true, she isn't entirely likable. For most of the book she passively goes along with all of Kristi's demands, trading morality for popularity. As a teenager, Rio's actions are pretty realistic. I mean, let's face it, how many teenagers are moral crusaders in the face of popularity? Still, while it's completely believable that Rio would, for example, date a popular guy and let him kiss her (and more) when she doesn't even really like him all that much, it isn't very easy to like her when she behaves so falsely. The rest of the characters are generic stereotypes without much depth or likability. The plot is equally shallow and trite with no surprises.

Rio does stand up for herself in the end, but her turn around rings a little hollow. She acknowledges some of her behavior and the regrets she has about it, but other behaviors (like drug use) are never repented and there is no indication that Rio will stop. Teens may find Rio easy to relate to, but without adult guidance on discussions about the book, I wonder if the book might be sending the wrong messages about certain behaviors. There are plenty of other books and movies to choose from in the "mean girl" and "lifestyles of the rich and fabulous" genres, most of which I've found are more enjoyable reads.

"Heathers" for the new generation
By Bearette24
This was an enjoyable read. It tells the story of Rio, who's named after a Duran Duran song. She lives with her former model mother and lawyer father in Laguna Beach, but misses New York and her friends there (they recently moved).

Rio makes a couple of friends from her art class in Laguna Beach, but then Kristi, cheerleader and queen bee, takes her under her wing. Suddenly, Rio has to follow rules...who to associate with, which boys to like, how to dress...or otherwise make Kristi mad. Everyone tiptoes around Kristi. But then, a fateful game of spin-the-bottle seals Rio's destiny. Kristi's not talking to her anymore, and she's turned the whole school against her.

This was an insightful look at high school cliques, the fear of those in power, and also just a fun bubbly read that made me remember being a teenager. The writing was pitch-perfect and really sounded like a young adult.

Juicy reading where mean girls and expensive clothes take center stage
By Teen Reads
Transplanted from New York, Rio (like the Duran Duran song, not the city in Brazil) feels out of place in ritzy Newport Beach, California. Her mother is obsessed with redecorating and Juicy Couture sweatsuits, and her dad travels too much for her liking. Even though Rio is fairly happy as a class-cutting art geek, she is soon invited into the most popular clique in school.

Kristi, the clique's feared leader who lives "on coke, both diet and Columbian," christens Rio her "best friend." Rio's climb to the top of the popularity food chain comes fast, and her fall comes even faster. After a disastrous party kills her popularity, Rio knows she'll have to rely on her own wits and bravery to set things right. Or at least sort of right.

If you're itching for the next Gossip Girl novel, ART GEEKS AND PROM QUEENS may be the book for you. Although the setting is sunny beaches and South Coast Plaza instead of Central Park and Fifth Avenue, mean girls and expensive clothes still take center stage. Despite the superficiality of a number of characters, Rio learns a lot about self-reliance and true friendship, making her a little more interesting than Blair and Serena. It's not great literature by any stretch of the imagination, but hey, don't we all need a book like that sometimes?
