In this third suspenseful mystery-thriller from Edgar winner Pattison (The Skull Mantra; Water Touching Stone), discredited former Beijing police investigator Shan Tao Yun, unofficially released from a central Tibetan gulag, is now living with a group of outlaw Buddhist monks, some of whom helped him through his most unbearable prison experiences. In gratitude he and his friend, the renegade monk Lokesh, agree to escort a stolen religious artifact to the remote Yapchi Valley, the site, coincidentally, of international oil explorations, from which an American engineer has disappeared. Chinese plans to clear the valley and relocate its farmers and sheepherders to cities will profit the mining project and aid the Chinese "in another effort to pry Tibet's collective fingers from its rosary." Just as the holy artifact is a mystical symbol of Tibetan culture and Buddhism, so the multilayered story is imbued with Tibetan belief, civilization and politics. Readers with little knowledge of Tibet's religion and history may have difficulty following the plot with its large cast of varied, well-drawn Tibetans, Chinese and Americans, countless treks through rugged, stunning landscapes and the numerous side plots including several murders some of which are red herrings. Pattison's empathy for the cause of Tibetan independence is admirable, but it often overwhelms his story. The book, which is far too long and discursive, becomes a polemic that dilutes Shan's search for the truth.

A pause for book 3

The people of Tibet were the victims of Book 2; Book 3, with a fairly simple plot, focuses on the rape (and self-healing qualities) of Tibet, the land--its mountains, lakes, and those who lived in harmony with the land. The ostensible villains here are an international consortium of petroleum hunters, with Communist Party bureaucrats trying to use the exploration to advance their own petty political careers. Elements of Tibet Buddhist practices and culture, but not as "real" as those in Book 2.

This book transported me to Tibet

Adventure, mystery, political intrigue, and a stunning setting combine for a thoroughly satisfying novel. I have been to Tibet and spoken with some of the people who have been imprisoned and experienced oppression from the Chinese. But I also met some eternally radiant people whose enlightened attitude uplifts all they encounter. This book took me back to Tibet. Enjoy the journey.

Tibetan realism

This fourth volume of the Inspector Shan novels is just as insightful and intellectual as the other three. Through the eyes of Shan, a former high official in the Chinese government in Beijing sent to a concentration camp in Tibet under false charges, we experience Tibetan culture under the oppressive thumb of China as it literally tries to obliterate this culture. Those, who like Shan are seeking enlightenment, can emote with him as he attempts to shed his prior attachments and fully appreciate the impermanence of everything including himself. In contrast to Shan, we witness the glorius and unaffected approach to life of the lamas Gendun and Lokesh, the latter of which shared Shan's imprisonment. Their childlike fascination with the world about them remind us that we too should revel in the everyday life which surrounds us as well. While it can be hard to read about the atrocities committed by dispassionate, rigid Chinese authorities, each of Pattison's novels leave us with a sense of hope and a deeper understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. Despite the complexity and length of all his novels, they are worth every minute for the serious reader who seeks the truly unique novel.
