The Other Girl: A Midvale Academy Novel, by Sarah Miller

Molly McGarry is about to learn that the only thing more traumatizing than spending six months trapped in your boyfriend's head is being stuck inside your ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend's head. After Molly dumps Gideon because she thinks he's lusting after some one else, a game of spin the bottle leads to a kiss between Gideon and the beautiful, sexy Pilar Benitez-Jones. Somehow, the kiss knocks Molly out of Gideon's head―and right into Pilar's. Now she's desperate to get Gid back. She uses all her "superpower" to try to come between Pilar and Gid, but instead of breaking them up, she seems to be bringing them closer together. Can she stand to be at school with Gid and at the same time be inside the mind of the girl he moved on with? How does Molly win back Gid without letting him know what's going on? And how on earth is she ever going to get out of Pilar's head...?

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up—Predicting your boyfriend's every wish is easy, especially when you are in his head. Molly knows everything that Gideon thinks, and she uses that to be there when he wants her, to leave when he doesn't, and to fulfill his fantasies when the opportunity arises. However, when she catches him thinking of another girl during an intimate moment, Molly dumps him on the spot. And when a game of spin the bottle goes wrong, Molly ends up inside the head of Pilar, the hottest girl in school, dealing with her insecurities as well as her fantasies about Gideon. In this sequel to Inside the Mind of Gideon Rayburn (St. Martin's, 2006), one can't help wondering where all the strong female characters have gone. Pilar is a cardboard popular teen, differentiated only by her accent (she is from South America), which is transliterated on the page. Molly spends too much time in other characters' heads to ever assert much of a personality, though the tension that develops with her roommate smacks of authenticity. The wise teacher spouts platitudes that Molly can easily brush off, and the twist at the end and explanation gives pause rather than cause. Not as engaging or appealing as the first book, this title won't stretch the author's fans too far beyond the established base.—Chris Shoemaker, New York Public Library

Review

“Readers will again find Molly's Midvale world full of bawdy talk, pot smoking, and naughty pranks, but they will appreciate the smart insights, too.... This is fun fare--and deeper than a typical prep school series.” ―Publishers Weekly

“The tongue-in-cheek humor, posh prep-school lifestyle, and teen romantic angst make this perhaps the most enjoyable and believable chapter in the lives of Midvale's preppies.” ―Booklist

fun teen fantasy
By A Customer
At Midvale Prep, students Molly McGarry and Gideon Rayburn are an entry. She is his perfect girlfriend as she knows his desires as if she is reading what is inside his head; which is what she is actually doing as she is INSIDE THE MIND OF GIDEON RAYBURN.

However, during an intimate interlude, Molly is stunned when she reads her beloved's thoughts as Gideon's mind wanders over to beautiful Pilar Benitez-Jones. Upset, but needing to conceal what she knows about his mental misdemeanor in order to hide her telepathy ability, Molly struggles with what to do next. However, she loses control of what next when somehow she mislays her brainwave connection to Gideon as her skill abruptly for no known reason that she can comprehend switches to reading Pilar. At the same Gideon starts a campaign to seduce Pilar.

Although some of the support students are stereotypes of the affluent snob, Molly makes the tale with her rapid take no prisoners narration of others especially the rival. Older teen fans will enjoy her antics as she surfs heads not liking what she hears especially Gid and Pilar as a sexual entity. Sarah Miller provides a wonderful sequel as Molly is inside the mind of THE OTHER GIRL.

What if you could read your boyfriend's mind?
By Skyqi
Molly is a prep school student that is in madly love with her boyfriend Gideon. She has a secret. She is inside his head, meaning she can see and hear everything he does and knows his thoughts. She's been using this advantage to make him fall in love with her. She achieves her goal but is still insecure and when he thinks of school beauty, Pilar, during a private moment, she breaks up with him. The problem is she is still in his head and he starts to get much closer to Pilar. Molly's ability is volatile and she finds herself suddenly out of Gideon's head and inside Pilar's head. She has to try to ignore their thoughts and focus on her own life, her studies and a chance to win a much-needed scholarship. Can she handle the distractions and possibly win back her ex-boyfriend?

This is a great story with a great conflict. The characters of Molly and Pilar were very good. Both start out unlikeable but they grow personally through the course of the story. There are some hilarious moments and sad moments throughout as the students deal with the classifications they've been given, ex. the smart one or the pretty one. What the author does wonderfully in this context is show their inner, secret thoughts, then what they actually say to others. This book was a nice surprise. Highly recommended.

A Great follow up
By L. B.
This book was a good sequel to the last. The whole idea didn't get tired, like what usually happens with many sequels.
Being inside Pilar's head was a fun. She seems really shallow at first, but you begin to understand why, and then there is major character development. I found myself pitying her, and liking her more than Molly.

I also found the development of Edie quite interesting. Again, like the first book, the descriptions of people and their reactions was great. The reactions of boys to Pilar are priceless and can have you laughing out loud.

I DEFINITELY recommend this book.
