Introducing Vivien Leigh Reid: Daughter of the Diva, by Yvonne Collins, Sandy Rideout

Leigh can think of a million ways she'd rather spend a summer besides visiting her movie star mother, Annika. But her dad insists the two need some "mother/daughter bonding time," and packs fifteen-year-old Leigh off to Ireland, where she'll be her mom's personal assistant on the set of her latest film, "Danny Boy." It could be worse. Annika may be a distant, self-absorbed diva, but Sean, the young, hot co-star, has a brogue to die for, and things heat up when Leigh lands a bit-part in the movie. Soon, Leigh and Annika are sharing scenes, scripts--and the spotlight. With tensions rising on the set, Annika and Leigh must finally grow into their most demanding roles: mother and daughter.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–For a dozen years, Leigh has been mostly estranged from her second-rate movie-actress mother. This summer, though, her father ships her off to Ireland to spend six weeks with Annika on the set of Danny Boy, the best movie she's ever had the chance to make. The 15-year-old's first-person narrative becomes even more intimate through her imaginary life scripts, revealing her thoughts of how some scenes should play out, and through her text messages to her best friend back in the States. Leigh waltzes into a small role in her glamorous mother's film, but she doesn't find making peace with the woman nearly so effortless. Annika's costar, Sean, is one gorgeous young Irishman who seems smitten with the much-older actress, while Leigh has fallen quite hard for him herself. An engaging crew of quirky characters makes the completion of the movie and the progression of the mother and daughter's relationship well worth following. When Leigh feels betrayed by her mother, she runs off to Dublin, asserting both her independence and angst, allowing for growth through reconciliation–and a chance to meet a cute guy her own age. Readers who enjoy Meg Cabot's The Princess Diaries and Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicholson series (both HarperCollins) will want to know what Leigh does next.–Suzanne Gordon, Richards Middle School, Lawrenceville, GA

From Booklist
Gr. 7-10. Fifteen-year-old Leigh Reid is on her way to Ireland, sent there because her father thinks she needs to spend some time with her absent mother, who is a movie star. Even though it might be cool to be on a movie set, Leigh just knows she won't bond with the woman who hasn't done anything but send postcards or packages for the last two years. Little does she know what awaits her across the sea: a bit part in the new movie, a crush on her mother's hunky young costar, and a chance for mother and daughter to get matching tattoos. Collins and Rideout tell a familiar story with fresh energy and interesting characters, casting Leigh as a likable, spunky American teen discovering new talents and an appreciation for all things Irish. Readers will have fun watching Leigh catch the acting bug and cheer her on as she holds her own with her diva mother. Cindy Welch

entertaining
By Sydnie
It was a fun read. I thought the plot was interesting and there is always something slightly intriguing about the movie industry. I thought the main character was rather immature for a 15 year old though, but maybe I'm mistaken, lol, but I think I was much more mature than that when I was 15. It was predictable but I still liked it and the main reason I bought it was actually for the research, I wanted to know more about making movies as I want to write something of my own that takes place on the set of a movie. As far as that goes, things are rather unspecific but it helps give you a bit better feel for things.

I think it's a good read for anyone under 15 and still interesting if you're older than that.

Depending on who you buy it from though, mine came with two big stickers on the cover that left big sticky patches and ripped paper behind.

Great Teen Summer Read
By Dorrie Wheeler
School is out and here is a wonderful new book for your summer reading collection. Vivien Leigh Reid-Daughter of the Diva (St. Martins) by Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout. is an enjoyable book that teens will enjoy. When you pick up the book, it seems like it's kind of a long one, but in reality the book is only just over 200 pages and it's a quick fast paced read. Actually, it's 227 pages although the page at Amazon says 277 pages. Vivien Leigh Reid-Daughter of the Diva is about a young girl named Leigh.

You can almost picture this film as a starring vehicle for Dakota Fanning when she get's a little bit older or better yet, Jami Lynn Spears. The story is told first person by Leigh. She day dreams about situations in her life and they appear on the page like lines from a script. Her mother is an actress and Lynn is not thrilled with her mother's choices in movies. She expresses that her mother's specialty is "low budget, made for TV vixens and tramps." Her life is thrown for a twist when she finds out she has to spend part of her summer in Ireland with her mother who is filming a movie.

The film really reads like a movie. You can picture the scenes in your head. You know Annika and Leigh are going to have to learn to get along. It's kind of hard to picture a young woman not being so fond of her mother, so you know before the book ends they will warm up to each other. The mother seems like a very stereotyped diva. When Leigh arrives in Ireland she says via an e-mail message, "Mom worse thN eva."

This is an enjoyable read. Read this one now so when the movie comes out you can say you read the book first. There is a sequel. Vivien Lee Reid: Diva In Training is due in 2006.

introducing....fun!
By kittycat
Vivien Leigh Reid hasn't spent quality time with her mother, a b list movie/telivision star, in years. So naturally she is less than thrilled about her father shipping her off to Ireland, the location of her mother's new movie, for the summer. When she arrives, there is no surprise. Her mother is being her typical diva self....she even insists that Viv pretends to be her sister so that no one will guess her real age. However, what Viv was expecting to be the worst summer ever brightens up as she lands a bit part in the movie. She also develops a crush on her mother's hunky young costar. Just when she thinks life is getting interesting, her mother steps in. She tries to sabatoge her daughter in the movie, and flirts with Viv's new crush, even though he's old enough to be her son! Viv, sick and tired off her mother, the selfish diva, decides to take off on her own. Revenge isn't so sweet when you're lost and penniless in a foreign country, though. Will Viv patch things up with her mother...or will she leave the diva behind for good?
