A Lawyer's Life, by Johnnie Cochran, David Fisher

The most famous lawyer in America talks about the law, his life, and how he has won.

Johnnie Cochran has been a lawyer for almost forty years. In that time, he has taken on dozens of groundbreaking cases and emerged as a pivotal figure in race relations in America. Cochran gained international recognition as one of America's best - and most controversial lawyers - for leading 'the Dream Team' defense of accused killer O.J. Simpson in the Trial of the Century. Many people formed their perception of Cochran based on his work in that trial. But long before the Simpson trial and since then Johnnie Cochran has been a leader in the fight for justice for all Americans. This is his story.

Cochran emerged from the trial as one of the nation's leading African-American spokespersons - and he has done most of his talking through the courtroom. Abner Louima. Amadou Diallo. The racially-profiled New Jersey Turnpike Four. Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. Patrick Dorismond. Cynthia Wiggins. These are the names that have dominated legal headlines - and Cochran was involved with each of them. No one who first encountered him during the Simpson trial can appreciate his impact on our world until they've read his whole story.

Drawing on Cochran's most intriguing and difficult cases, A Lawyer's Life shows how he's fought his critics, won for his clients, and affected real change within the system. This is an intimate and compelling memoir of one lawyer's attempt to make us all truly equal in the eyes of the law.

Amazon.com Review
Johnnie Cochran had been famed as a folksy oratory in Los Angeles courtrooms since the 1960s, but the 1995 O.J. Simpson trial catapulted him to international fame--a status he gladly acknowledges in this bare-knuckles memoir of his years in court.

Cochran doesn't spend much time revisiting the Simpson case (except to proclaim O.J. innocent). Cochran devotes most of his account to less-celebrated cases that address repeated themes--police negligence and outright perjury; the difficulties minorities face in securing impartial justice; the inherent unfairness of racial profiling. Cochran describes his methods, and explains the reason for his rhyming summations ("If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit"): "Juries enjoyed them, understood them, and, more importantly, remembered them."

Readers may not be won over by Cochran, but his book will be widely enjoyed and remembered. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
As Cochran freely concedes, his representation of O.J. Simpson transformed him from a lawyer into a celebrity. In this memoir of his professional life, he tries to put that case in perspective. Although a fierce critic of the racism he sees in the legal system and among the L.A. police, Cochran says the common perception that he is anti-law enforcement is wrong; he began his career as a prosecutor, but he is on a mission to eradicate racism wherever he finds it. Long before the Simpson case, he made a name for himself (and a small fortune) by successfully bringing police brutality cases on behalf of African-Americans like Barbara Deadwyler, whose husband was shot dead for no apparent reason while rushing his pregnant wife to the hospital. Cochran lost that early case and many others because, in his view, white juries refused to believe that police officers would lie under oath. Unfortunately, this memoir reads as though it was dictated to co-author Fisher (My Best Friends, with George Burns): it drifts from one legal war story to the next, often repeats details and occasionally leaves thoughts dangling. And that's a shame, because Cochran's experience gives him the authority to utter some uncomfortable truths, among them that justice is often reserved for the wealthy. Worse yet, he says, racism permeates the entire system, from the cop on the beat to the judge on the bench. Cochran musters case after case in support of these conclusions. This revelatory, often dismaying account provides a cogent explanation of why many African-Americans have such a jaded view of our legal system. (Oct.)

From Library Journal
Best known for his role in the "Trial of the Century" as O.J. Simpson's lead attorney, Cochran (Journey to Justice) describes how this high-profile case changed his life, how it became a "legal soap opera," and how he found himself both loved and hated, enduring threats against him and his family. He also discusses his efforts for other clients, including Amadou Diallo, Abner Louima, and Michael Jackson.

A LAWYER'S LIFE PRESENTS STRONG CASE
By B.J. Robinson
I had read Johnnie Cochran's first book JOURNEY TO JUSTICE so I wondered what new material could be presented in his latest book. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there's some material regarding the O.J. case which I skimmed over because I felt it was covered thoroughly in the first book. In LAWYER's LIFE Cochran talks about the cases he has been involved with since the OJ case (P.Diddy, Abner Louima, Patrick Dorismond, Reparations for slave descendents). He talks about his son's work as a highway patrolman which often surprises those who assume he is against all cops -- when he's really against "bad" cops. He gives insightful opinions on the law and explains why he's made it his lifelong passion. The influence of his family and of his religion is obvious (he was expected to excel in life; his father was the valedictorian of his high school class). Also obvious is the amount of time he puts in working as a lawyer -- around the clock oftentimes, balancing many cases at once daily. And he gives insight into the cases that have most affected him (no not O.J.)-- rather the Leonard Deadwyler and Geronimo Pratt case, to which he devoted 27 years of attention. His musings on the differences between the cultures of NY and LA, on having had his own show where he had to ask questions as opposed to answering them, and even his take on Clarence Thomas and why he's not good for the Supreme Court are enlightening. I had not been aware of the Disney case which I found riveting. This is a book for those who have interest in the inner workings of the law and in the behind-the-scenes life of a leading practitioner of the craft. Many readers will be moved and inspired by this lawyer's life.

A MUST for White Republicans.
By A Customer
...And I know you well, because I am a Black Republican - far to the Right - libertarian even. This book is not the typical liberal drivel from a neck bone-eatin' preacher. This is a good treatise on recent Black history, and an expose' on the justice system - in my view, the last vestige of true racism.
While I had to hold my nose in reading the very last chapter of the book (where he goes liberal), I could not refute the notion that that I was reading the words of a "wise old man." Such an opportunity should not be ignored, regardless of your race or political persuasion. If you can read this extremely pleasurable book, and still not at least understand the pov of the other side, then you truly don't have a heart.
It is enjoyable reading, unoffensive to all, and a good lesson on life in America from one of its premier insiders. Further, it advances the cause of racial harmony.
BUY THIS BOOK. You won't regret it.

Splendid
By kenton212
I thought the readings from chapters 1 through 9 were great. I mean Johnnie Cochran took the reader through cases familiar, and unfamiliar. In detail how some police are just terrible, how the system has bias in who will be the victim. But, the last chapter 10. Oh MY! If you dont read the book, just read chapter 10 it'll make you rethink alot of things. Its powerful-Johnnie goes on stating how the system has failed so many, how corporations get away with discrimination. His life and what its like to be a lawyer. Its just great. Read the book, and if you dont do that. Just read the last chapter, number 10 its worth it.

The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss, by Arthur Agatston

THE DIET EVERYONE'S TALKING ABOUT!

Developed by noted Miami cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston for his patients, THE SOUTH BEACH DIET became a national phenomenon-because it works. It's not low fat. It's not low carbs. It teaches you to use the right carbs and the right fats to change your body chemistry to burn fat, help reduce your cholesterol, and help prevent metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes). As a result, you'll lose weight quickly and safely.

Dr. Agatston's plan allows you to eat the foods you love-meat and fish, cheese, healthy oils and nuts, vegetables, and the right carbohydrates and sweets. There's no mandatory exercise, and you're never left craving more food. Structured in three simple phases, this may be the easiest diet that you've ever tried.

PHASE ONE: Say goodbye to bad-for-you "goodies"!
Your cravings will disappear...and so will eight to thirteen pound.

PHASE TWO: Your stomach is visibly smaller and favorite foods are back on the menu!
Your body is burning calories, not storing them!

PHASE THREE: The stage that lasts the rest of your life-normal foods in normal portions.
You will keep your ideal weight...and maintain your health and vitality.

With recipes and meal plans for each phase!

"The real value of the book is its sound nutritional advice."

Amazon.com Review
The verdict is in: those simple carbs we've been living on are killing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy—-orange juice, wheat toast, carrots—-are actually evil. To avoid blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recommending plenty of high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while cutting bread, rice, pastas, and fruits. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence.

The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilize your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake. While the diet is sound, the book could be better organized. The first half mixes scientific study with anecdote in a seemingly random way, while the mix of meal plans and recipes can be confusing. Still, the recipes are varied and tasty, and you'll never feel deprived, unless you currently happen to live by bread alone. --Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
Despite the glitzy title, this is one of the more appealing diet books among the new "anti-carb" programs. Agatston, a doctor based at Miami Beach's Mt. Sinai Medical Center, found that his patients not only were unable to stay on various popular diets but their cholesterol and blood sugar levels remained dangerously high after trying these plans. The doctor chose to alter his own diet-first avoiding all carbohydrates and fruit and then reintroducing these foods in moderation. Feeling better and losing weight, he then consulted a nutritionist to modify his strategy to devise a sound method for his patients. The South Beach diet begins with a somewhat restrictive two-week program, generally producing a weight loss of from eight to 13 pounds. The initial phase may be difficult for those who crave bread, pasta and fruit. But there are still choices, and snacks (cheese, hummus, vegetables) are a necessary part of the diet. People shouldn't feel hungry on this part of the diet, stresses the author. The second phase offers somewhat more choices, including whole wheat bread and other selected carbohydrates. Agatston advocates combining the "bad" with the "good." For example, take whole wheat bread and dip it into olive oil, rather than using butter. Eat a very small amount of pasta with lots of vegetables, meat and healthy oils. Complete meal plans along with simple recipes comprise roughly half the book. Of course, there's no perfect diet that works for everyone but the enthusiasm of the conversational tone and the inviting manner make the book more appealing than many other diet tomes.

Review

“Dr. Agatston is a noted cardiologist who's made many contributions, but The South Beach Diet may be his best. Importantly, this is not 'another diet book.' This is a book about health and well-being. Dr. Agatston does an outstanding job of explaining the importance of the types of food we eat and its impact on preventing illnesses, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. Not only will you feel better if you follow his diet, but you will look and live better.” ―Randolph P. Martin, M.D., director of noninvasive cardiology at Emory University Hospital, Atlant

“The real value of the book is its sound nutritional advice.” ―Newsweek

“I have tried every diet-including Weight Watchers, The Zone, Atkins, Jenny Craig-and have had a difficult time staying on those programs. The South Beach Diet is easy, simple, and delicious.” ―Linda Richman, author of I'd Rather Laugh

Not hard to follow and full of common sense....
By onairlady2001
This diet is full of common sense and I have lost weight by following the guidelines. It is easy to follow with lots of veggies, sensible proteins and cutting out processed foods, white flour and sugar.
There are some errors in the book though. In the first two week phase, you are supposed to avoid carrots (higher sugar content) yet in the first phase recipe section, the recipe includes carrots.
A minor detail to be sure, but still, this is not the only example I've noticed and I am wondering who proofed/approved this and what other errors there may be. (Hey, if you are following something to the letter and the letters are wrong....not good)
This is easier to follow than Atkins and allows "good" carbs and fats.
This is not so much a "diet" as a way to eat well , enjoy your food and make good choices for life.I am learning to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat" and this is a help.

Not really great on this book, I think their very 1st book was the best and led me into a weight loss program that has become a way of life for me. However, if your just starting out, you'll love this cookbook. It paves the way for making a lifesytle change ~~ The only way to do it...I would recommend this book !!!!

Energize yourself with the South Beach nutritional plan!
By nan c
I wish this was not called a diet. This book is a terrific guide to healthy eating and cuts through the fads of the previous 30 years to the bottom line of nutritional eating. Dr. Agatston has certainly done his homework in the area of nutrition and presents facts and studies to back his findings. There is so much misinformation out there, if you REALLY want to know what is best for your health then take the time to study his materials. He also lets you know that nutrition is an ongoing study for him and he will "tweak" his diet if something new is learned.
I especially love the recipes, many of which were devised by well known chefs in the Miami area. The meals are so good they are like eating at a five star restaurant. They do take a little time at first but you will learn short cuts to preparation. Example: I fix several chicken breasts ahead of time, cut them up and freeze them for quick additions to salads, sandwiches etc. My husband and I no longer enjoy eating out very much because our food is so much better tasting, more nutritious and satisfying.
This is a great book to get started on the South Beach Diet. Do not stop here. Order his other books as well. He does add much more information. I believe I have read everything he has written and most of his books have recipes you will enjoy.
If you have had it with fads (get the truth about low fat) and want the best nutrition this South Beach Diet is for you. Enjoy!

Kingdom of Silence (Inspector Keen Dunliffe Mysteries), by Lee Wood

After a U.S. marshal and her prisoner are gunned down outside of London’s Heathrow Airport before the prisoner can testify against her boyfriend, the head of a violent animal-rights group, Leeds Detective Sergeant Keen Dunliffe doesn’t seem like the right man for the case. But with an American federal agent dead and homegrown terrorists on the loose, Keen’s undercover experience and knowledge of Yorkshire—the terrorists’ backyard—come into play.

He’s ordered to head up a sting operation with Rachel Colver, an inexperienced police constable, who may have personal ties that will help her infiltrate the animal-rights group. However, Keen is worried about a plan that puts Rachel in obvious peril. The two hunker down and start working the case from the inside—while at the same time the most widespread outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease ever to strike the English countryside is decimating livestock.

Brutal extremists and police politics collide in a plot involving murder, intimidation, smuggling, and blackmail—with lethal consequences—in Kingdom of Silence, the second mystery in Lee Wood’s richly imagined and superbly nuanced series featuring DS Keen Dunliffe.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in early 2001, Wood's solid second mystery to feature Yorkshire Det. Sgt. Keen Dunliffe (after 2005's Kingdom of Lies) opens with a bang. Kim Prescott, a veteran U.S. marshal on the verge of retirement, is escorting convicted felon Eunice Connor on a flight to the U.K., where Connor is facing charges stemming from her role in a violent activist group, Justice for Animals Defense Alliance. Soon after the plane lands at Heathrow (and just as the reader thinks the sympathetic Prescott is going to play a major role), an assailant on a motorcycle shoots both Prescott and Connor to death. The authorities suspect JADA's leadership may have wanted Connor silenced. Teamed with the requisite wet-behind-the-ears young partner, Dunliffe doggedly follows leads to get the goods on the group. A subplot centering on an outbreak of hoof and mouth disease raises the ante, though fans of contemporary British police procedurals won't find much to distinguish this one from the many others already out there. From Booklist
At long last, here is the second installment in Wood’s British police procedural starring Sergeant Keen Dunliffe, which debuted in 2005 with Kingdom of Lies. Resigned to being his boss’ favorite target, Dunliffe has settled into what he thinks is a below-the-radar beat: crimes against animals. That changes, however, when an animal-rights extremist group is suspected of murdering a U.S. marshall, and Dunliffe goes undercover to sort it out. Set during the time of the hoof-and-mouth epidemic of 2001, the action takes place in the Yorkshire countryside near Leeds. Along with his undercover assignment, Keen attempts to rekindle his relationship with American professor Jillie Waltham, a central figure in the first book, but the ongoing investigation takes its toll. This is a solid, well-crafted procedural in which the Yorkshire setting is nearly as much a character as Keen or his fat cat, Thomas. The dark and unsettling plot is riveting and taut, perfectly paced to keep readers turning the pages, right to the end. --Jessica Moyer

Cautionary Tale Told Well
By Reader Leader
The author has gone back to the beginning of the century and laid out a horror story, but done in such a way that you never want to stop reading because you can't stomach the words. Yes, the story is horrendous, and everyone in the United States should be reminded of what the British went through faced with a disaster that no one really knew how to overcome -- except by killing. Farmers in this country face economic hardships here today, but I would like to believe that the powers that be would use a better system of controlling a disease that wiped out cattle farmers, dairy farmers, sheep farmers, people who were raising goats and pets belonging to countless chldren. Foot and mouth disease must be taken seriously. This novel, though, is a police procedural with a really likeable hero. By keeping the slaughter thread lying just beneath the main thread, you can absorb this disaster and then think about it, over and over, while you're falling asleep at night and saying a prayer that it could never happen here! I learned a lot while enjoying the story. What a great job by the author.

> Kingdom of Side Stories
By Stoney
THE TEASER
The novel begins with a teaser, a loathsome device designed to catch readers browsing in bookstores. The main effect of most teasers to mislead readers. In this case, the teaser misleads most reviewers. In the teaser, pregnant woman (Eunice Connor) is extradited from the U.S. to Britain. When she arrives, she and her escort officer (Kim Prescott) are murdered at the airport. That constitutes 95% of the action in the entire novel. Other than the fact that Connor is an animal rights activist, the chapter has no relationship to the "central story", nor any of the side-stories. I suspect that this atypical "action" chapter was ("after-the-fact") demanded by (perhaps even written by) the book's editor.

THE PLOT
In the "central story" of "Kingdom of Silence", Detective Sergeant Keen Dunliffe and (novice) Constable Rachel Colver are assigned (away from their normal duties) to investigate the illegal importation of parrots. The investigation bumbles along month after month with little or no progress until (just before being murdered) one of the members of an animal rights organization (and friend of Rachel) sends Rachel a package by post, documenting nefarious activities by the organization. At least several members of the organization are arrested and Dunliffe and Colver are reassigned back to their former duties. That's it, the whole story, and almost as complete as in the novel.

COMMENTS
Despite comments of other reviewers, "Kingdom of Silence" is NOT a police procedural. It is NOT action packed, it is not even action driven. The pace is NOT "unrelenting", rather it is plodding. The ending is NOT "explosive", indeed it is abrupt and unsatisfying--a flat dud.

However shortcomings of the "central story" are pretty-much irrelevant. The "central story" is primarily a vehicle for various side-stories. The dominant side-story, which has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the "central story", is the true story of the "hoof-and-mouth" epidemic of 2001 in Britain. The story of the botched and perhaps partially unnecessary slaughter of thousands of farm animals is told in reprinted or reworded newspaper articles, which vividly relate the uncertainty and horror of the times for the rural population

The other side stories are "relationship sketches" or "scenes" (not complete stories with a begining, development, and resolution). Among these are Dunliffe's continuing conflicts with his ex-wife, and doomed relationship with Jullie Waltham, an American archeologist working on a local dig.

Interestingly, the author devotes much space to the differences between male and female communication styles. Ironically, this novel is itself a perfect case study in the differences between how men and women (e.g., the author) tell stories. As the author expounds: women tend to be skilled in both male and female styles of conversation, while most men are easily bored by (and have no skill in) female conversational style. Therefore, men are likely to be deeply dissatisfied with Wood's style, feeling the need for more structure. Women are likely to enjoy the character development, not caring about the lack of any plot. Of course, this brings into question Wood's contention that women are skilled in male conversational style---Wood herself certainly is not.

Most other reviews are really only rehashes of the first few chapters. These are a "dustbin" of unrelated, and largely irrelevant, backstory materials which mostly serve to confuse the reader who has no context in which to fit the scraps.

VERDICT
Despite these significant caveats, the character development and relationship stories are imaginative, perceptive, and intriguing.

action-packed police procedural
By A Customer
In 2001, with hoof and mouse disease leading to the slaughter of cattle, veteran US Marshal Kim Prescott escorts convicted felon Eunice Connor, a member of the violent Justice for Animals Defense Alliance (JADA), from the UK to the States. Their plane stops at Heathrow where the law enforcement official and her prisoner disembark when a motorcycle rider shoots Prescott and Connor; killing both.

Authorities on both sides of the pond assume JADA secrets were kept concealed by silencing permanently Connor. Yorkshire Detective Superintendent Keen Dunliffe leads an undercover operation to bring the JADA chief to justice using tyro Constable Rachel Colver as bait; a plan he dislikes as Rachel may easily become collateral damage. Nothing goes smooth on the maneuver, but Dunliffe keeps a stiff upper lip as he tries to complete the mission and get Rachel out safely; two goals that seem in conflict.

The second Yorkshire Dunliffe police procedural (see KINGDOM OF LIES) is an action-packed thriller that starts with an explosive opening and never slows down through a volatile middle until the explosive climax. Dunliffe is terrific as he struggles between the moral dilemmas of the potential sacrifice of one person vs. the safety of many. JADA also adds ethical questions though the group has chosen to sacrifice humans for their animal rights cause. Fans of British police procedurals will enjoy this fine entry even if the operation is somewhat by the sub-genre book.

Where the Right Went Wrong: How Neoconservatives Subverted the Reagan Revolution and Hijacked the Bush Presidency, by Patrick J. Buchanan

American Empire is at its apex. We are the sole superpower with no potential challenger for a generation. We can reach any point on the globe with our cruise missiles and smart bombs and our culture penetrates every nook and cranny of the global village. Yet we are now the most hated country on earth, buried beneath a mountain of debt and morally bankrupt.

Where the Right Went Wrong chronicles how the Bush administration and Beltway conservatives have abandoned their principles, and how a tiny cabal hijacked U. S. foreign policy, and may have ignited a "war of civilizations" with the Islamic world that will leave America's military mired down in Middle East wars for years to come.

At the same time, these Republicans have sacrificed the American worker on the altar of free trade and discarded the beliefs of Taft, Goldwater and Reagan to become a party of Big Government that sells its soul to the highest bidder.

A damning portrait of the present masters of the GOP, Where the Right Went Wrong calls to task the Bush administration for its abandonment of true conservatism including:

*The neo-conservative cabal-liberal wolves in conservative suits.
*Why the Iraq War has widened and imperiled the War on Terror.
*How current trade policy outsources American sovereignty, independence and industrial power.

"Buchanan is an honest writer who...minces nothing except an occasional opponent."

Amazon.com Review
Although the George W. Bush administration is famous for being "on message," delivering a consistent and polished political perspective no matter what, such consistency apparently does not extend to every member of the conservative universe. In Where the Right Went Wrong, veteran pundit and occasional presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan offers up scathing criticisms of Bush's policies, the arrogance and boorishness of which, he warns, could ultimately dramatically destabilize the United States' superpower status. The problem, in Buchanan's eyes, is the rejection of traditional Reagan-era conservatism by an administration under the sway of the so-called "neoconservatives," who favor a pre-emptive military strategy and big government and don't mind running up dangerously huge budget deficits to support it. The war in Iraq, fought without direct demonstrable threat, alienates America in the eyes of the rest of the world, says Buchanan, squandering the global goodwill earned after the 9/11 attacks and creating exponentially larger numbers of terrorists who will threaten the U.S. for generations to come. The zeal over free trade among elected officials, a feeling notably not shared by Buchanan, Ross Perot, and Ralph Nader, is costing America jobs, Buchanan theorizes, and leading to a de-industrialized service-sector-only economy, an end to American self-sufficiency in favor of a reliance on global corporations, and a looming economic crisis. Refreshingly, and unlike pundits of his day, Buchanan crafts his arguments by examining world history, offering detailed analogies to the Roman Empire, the Civil War, and pre-Soviet Russia among others. Conservatives alienated by the Bush administration will find an eloquent champion in Buchanan and even liberals, who may not have known there was a conservative argument against war in Iraq, stand to learn something from a right side of the aisle perspective so different from that found in the Bush White House. --John Moe

From Publishers Weekly
In his indictment of the current Bush administration and its "neoconservative" policies, pundit and occasional presidential candidate Buchanan likens the American condition to that of Rome before the fall, citing "ominous analogies" such as "the decline of religion and morality, corruption of the commercial class, and a debased and decadent culture." According to Buchanan, the blame for this state of affairs rests squarely in the lap of "neoconservatives," who are mere liberals in sheep’s clothing. These neocons, the author contends, have wrestled control of the Republican party out of the hands of true conservatives such as himself, Barry Goldwater and, of course, Ronald Reagan—with disastrous results. Buchanan takes issue with Bush’s policies on, among other things, immigration, terrorism, imperialism, the Middle East, free trade and the deficit. What may come as a surprise to readers is Buchanan’s position on the war in Iraq, which he believes was an enormous error in judgment. "By attacking and occupying an Arab nation that had no role in 9/11, no plans to attack us, and no weapons of mass destruction, we played into bin Laden’s hand," Buchanan writes. But liberals won’t stay on board with the book’s message for long, especially when it comes to issues of culture and social policy. Buchanan is against affirmative action, abortion and gay rights, to name a few, and he believes immigration poses a serious threat to the American way of life. At times, Buchannan obscures his arguments with ill-chosen words that many will read as xenophobic, if not racist. In a discussion of illegal Mexican immigrants, for example, he calls California "Mexifornia" and adds, "Ten years after NAFTA, Mexico’s leading export to America is still—Mexicans. America is becoming Mexamerica." Whether or not one agrees with these conclusions, Buchanan’s book is provocative and will certainly ruffle feathers on both sides of the party line.

This Is Not Your Dad's Republican Party
By the dirty mac
Patrick J. Buchanan is a long-time conservative pundit and activist who is alarmed at how the neoconservatives have raided the post-Reagan Republican Party. The neocons, he warns, are taking the GOP and the country down a hazardous road. In the name of waging "war on terror" they are spearheading a utopian, open-ended, and downright unconservative policy of overthrowing Arab Muslim governments (regardless of which one actually had a hand in 9/11) and (cough, cough) "democratizing" them from the top-down.

Buchanan is especially good at debunking the "moral clarity" so near and dear to neocon hearts: "In this most Christianized of countries [the U.S.], premarital sex, homosexual unions and abortions are considered normal and moral by our cultural elites [including the more hypocritical neocons]. Islamic societies reject them as immoral. Who does President Bush believe is right?...In a war against 'evil-doers,' on whose side is Beijing?...In World War 2 we were allied with Stalin...in the Cold War with the Shah and General Pinochet. America triumphed by putting 'moral clarity' on the shelf....Were we acting immorally?" Excellent questions all.

So far as it goes, Buchanan's critique contains some serious bite and plenty of truth. However, he is mistaken to dump the blame entirely in the laps of the neocons. There is a second equally important culprit: the religious right.

The reason the GOP has changed so much since the late '80s is because its two newest and loudest constituent groups, the neocons and the religious right, are not traditional Republican constituencies at all. Rather, they are the direct descendents of the two most extreme wings of the New Deal Democrat coalition: the Marxists and Trotskyists of the Old Left (today's neocons) and the segregationist Democrats of the Old South (today's religious right; Pat Robertson's father, Senator A. Willis Robertson of Virginia, was a Dixiecrat segregationist). Both groups were alienated by the rise of the New Left, Black Power and the militant anti-war movement in and around the Democratic Party in the late 1960s and early '70s. Both groups eventually discarded the New Deal "class war" and embraced the "culture war" instead. Both rallied to Ronald Reagan's banner in 1980. They have slowly but steadily consolidated their grip on the GOP ever since.

At the elite level, Buchanan's neoconservative enemies from the Northeast provided the theories and brainpower, such as they were, for the Iraq War. However, it was Buchanan's friends (or former friends?) among the evangelical Protestants in the so-called "red states" in the South who provided the votes and the grassroots fervor. You can't discuss one without the other, and neither one could succeed without the other.

Buchanan also understates how much neoconservatism has evolved. The neoconservatism of 1980-84 was not the same as the neoconservatism of 2000-04. What happened? The neocons who began on the far left (Irving Kristol, Norman Podhoretz) slid over to the far right and played footsie with Jerry Falwell. By the end of George H.W. Bush's administration in 1992, their children or successors (William Kristol, Richard Perle) won over key members of the Republican establishment (Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld). The rest, as they say, is history.

Meanwhile, the neocons who began as centrist Democrats (Samuel Huntington, Daniel Bell, Daniel Patrick Moynihan) more or less remained centrist Democrats. When neoconservatism drifted too far to the right, they melted away and maintained a safe distance from the Republicans. That's why neoconservatism seems so extreme today. Buchanan acknowledges how Huntington has drawn fire from younger neocons such as David Brooks, but he mentions this only in passing.

Buchanan is no slouch as a culture warrior, yet his conservative instincts make him recoil from the $1.5 billion "pro-marriage initiative" unveiled by the Bush White House in 2004. The idea was that you, dear taxpayer, must subsidize marriage counseling with sectarian religious overtones. However, let us remember that this was a sop to the religious right, not to the neocons. Most liberals would oppose such meddling on separation-of-church-and-state grounds, but Buchanan's opposition derives from questions surrounding the original intent of the Founders: "Where in the Constitution is the federal government empowered to take money from U.S. citizens to teach other citizens how to have 'healthy marriages'?...Where LBJ funded poverty groups to build a power base in the cities independent of mayors, George W. Bush plans to fund God's pork for 'faith-based' groups to enable Republicans to get a foot in the church door by making the pastor dependent on federal dollars."

Maybe we shouldn't be surprised. Like the neocons, the religious right retains its New Deal DNA. They have no problem with $400 billion budget deficits and Big Government -- so long as Big Government promotes THEIR agenda. Dick Cheney said so himself: "Budget deficits don't matter."

Buchanan roasts the Bush Republicans for embracing "the free-trade faith preached by the party of Wilson and FDR" and "the free-trade policies of JFK and LBJ." Huh? The Roosevelt/Truman and Kennedy/Johnson Democrats were not free traders by today's standards. After WWII, they merely sought to reduce tariffs among First World countries to help Western Europe recover from the devastation of the war. No more, no less. Even organized labor went along with this limited conception of free trade. You can't compare them to the Bush Republicans or to the corporate-friendly Clinton Democrats of the 1990s, let alone to the 19th century British free traders. FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ and Hubert Humphrey never would have supported free-trade treaties with Third World governments, such as NAFTA. Similarly, Roosevelt supported the immigration restrictions enacted in the 1920s. He would have gagged at today's de facto open-border policy with Mexico and the resulting parade of cheap labor (and perhaps a few terrorists) condoned by George W. Bush and Vicente Fox.

But despite its blind spots and misleading aspects, Buchanan's condemnation of the GOP is essentially accurate. This is not your father's Republican Party. The administration of George W. Bush may be called many things. "Conservative" is not one of them.

Have The Neo-Cons Led Us Into A Permanent Decline?
By SUPPORT THE ASPCA.
The author delves deeply into the negative changes in both the USA & the Republican party brought about by the neo-cons. He spends the first third of the book ridiculing the present Bush administration willing attitude toward waging war to spread democracy. With the bulk focusing on the Iraq war.

He shows how Richard Pearle & Paul Wolfiwitz convinced president G.Bush to adopt interventionist policies. In ch-3, he gives some historical background on Islam. from their early conflicts with the west to the present. In ch-4, he speaks of the vagueness of the term "war on terror." He feels it is an eternal war that can't truly be won. Chapter-5 was the most fascinating to this reader as he compares the USA's economic & military power to that of China's. In ch-6-8, he bashes the abysmal economic policies of the neo-cons. From out of control government spending, the huge deficits, the outsourcing of our manufacturing base, & the de-valuing of the dollar. If something is not done to reverse these trends he feels we will be in a permanent decline. In ch-9, he detests the craven Congress' surrender to the judicial branch. He feels the latter has become far to powerful in its negative influence on our citizenry.

In ch-10, "The Way Back Home" he concludes with advice on foreign policy, economic policy, immigration, Islam & terror. For both the USA & the Republican party he believes itis crucial that the traditionalist conservative ideological base take back the party from the neo-con wing of the party. Unlike his previous book "Death Of The West," he has plenty of statistics to back up his claims. In conclusion he feels it will take at least a decade to repair the damage done by the Bush administration. Lets
all hope it can be fixed faster than that?

Common Ground can be found
By Marilyn L. James
Buy the book and be an American first. Dare to find the common ground and unite us as a nation.

As a 23 year Democrat who registered Republican because I wanted to vote in the Kansas Republican primary (which never happened) for John McCain and who is now registered as an Independent I found much common ground in this book. If you throw out the comments about eliminating government departments that have been in existence all of my life by rolling back the New Deal and the Great Society, and the comments about the "liberal judiciary" I agree with everything else. I'm not for the type of 'Limited Government' we got during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina which was a national disgrace of the first magnatude.

Chapter One - Democratic Imperialism and the war president

I was neither for nor against the War in Iraq. After hearing for years after the Gulf War that "we should have taken out Saddam" I knew that Bush would move to do so should he become president. I figure that if we have an all volunteer army, those soldiers know what they are getting themselves into and if they were willing to sign up and if they were for the war, then so be it.

Chapter Two - The war party hijackers of american foreign policy

Speaks for itself. Since this book was written two years ago its a shame it took this long to become public knowledge that the neocons had got us into a mess.

Chapter Three - Is Islam the enemy?

I don't want to wake up to the call to prayer for Muslims in America. I'm for diversity but only up to a point. I'm not for multi-culturalism. I'm more a nationalist/traditionalist who would like to see English as the national language. If a judge won't let this go into law, then impeach that judge.

Chapter Four - Unwinnable war?

How do we win against an idea?

Chapter Five - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Our trade deficit is out of control. I agree with that.

Chapter Six - Economic Treason

Definitely agree with what he has to say about this subject. Buchanan quotes historian Corelli Barnett in The Collapse of the British Power

"Central to liberalism was the belief that human progress and human happiness alike were best assumed by elevating individuals to compete freely with each other: laissez-faire; let them get on with it. What was socially necessary should be entrusted to spontaneous creation by private initiative. As Adam Smith, the founder of liberal economics, put it in 1776: "By pursuing his own interest [an individual] frequently promotes that of society, the more effectually than when he really intends to promote it." It was Adam Smith who formulated the doctrine of Free Trade, keystone of liberalism, which was to exercise as long-lived and as baneful effect on British power as Wesley and Whitfield's preaching.

This kind of liberalism I'm definitely no longer for. Roll-back NAFTA, CAFTA and all the rest. Put American industry first and certainly stop subsidizing our jobs going overseas. If its conservative to want to put the nation first above corporate interests, then I'm as conservative as they come!

Chapter Seven - Conservative Impersonators

I knew from day one that Bush was a wolf in sheep's clothing, WHY did it take so long for the American people to see it?

Chapter Eight - Falling Dollar, Failing Nation

Makes sense. One of these days our dollars going out to other nations is going to catch up with us. We can't sustain billion dollar trade deficits forever.

Chapter Nine - The Abdication of Congress and the rise of judicial dictatorshipl.

He's certainly correct about Congress abdicating its constitutional duties. Neither agree nor disagree about the judges. I guess its my libertarian streak that comes out when it comes to the government trying to tell me what I can and can't do with my own body, or, for that matter, those of my loved ones ala Terry Schiavo.

Chapter Ten - The way back home

He's wrong about always voting for his party whether right or wrong. We have much common ground. I'm really fed up with the politics of polarization. It isn't that the media is liberal or right-wing, its that its for confrontation and controversy. It makes them money. If we're all in agreement, where's the controversy, and therefore, the money, to be made in that? The American people in this mid-term election has finally said no to the divide and conquer tactics of Rove. Let's say no to the national news media as well and make them stop being an extension of the 'National Enquirer'.

Introducing Vivien Leigh Reid: Daughter of the Diva, by Yvonne Collins, Sandy Rideout

Leigh can think of a million ways she'd rather spend a summer besides visiting her movie star mother, Annika. But her dad insists the two need some "mother/daughter bonding time," and packs fifteen-year-old Leigh off to Ireland, where she'll be her mom's personal assistant on the set of her latest film, "Danny Boy." It could be worse. Annika may be a distant, self-absorbed diva, but Sean, the young, hot co-star, has a brogue to die for, and things heat up when Leigh lands a bit-part in the movie. Soon, Leigh and Annika are sharing scenes, scripts--and the spotlight. With tensions rising on the set, Annika and Leigh must finally grow into their most demanding roles: mother and daughter.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–For a dozen years, Leigh has been mostly estranged from her second-rate movie-actress mother. This summer, though, her father ships her off to Ireland to spend six weeks with Annika on the set of Danny Boy, the best movie she's ever had the chance to make. The 15-year-old's first-person narrative becomes even more intimate through her imaginary life scripts, revealing her thoughts of how some scenes should play out, and through her text messages to her best friend back in the States. Leigh waltzes into a small role in her glamorous mother's film, but she doesn't find making peace with the woman nearly so effortless. Annika's costar, Sean, is one gorgeous young Irishman who seems smitten with the much-older actress, while Leigh has fallen quite hard for him herself. An engaging crew of quirky characters makes the completion of the movie and the progression of the mother and daughter's relationship well worth following. When Leigh feels betrayed by her mother, she runs off to Dublin, asserting both her independence and angst, allowing for growth through reconciliation–and a chance to meet a cute guy her own age. Readers who enjoy Meg Cabot's The Princess Diaries and Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicholson series (both HarperCollins) will want to know what Leigh does next.–Suzanne Gordon, Richards Middle School, Lawrenceville, GA

Gr. 7-10. Fifteen-year-old Leigh Reid is on her way to Ireland, sent there because her father thinks she needs to spend some time with her absent mother, who is a movie star. Even though it might be cool to be on a movie set, Leigh just knows she won't bond with the woman who hasn't done anything but send postcards or packages for the last two years. Little does she know what awaits her across the sea: a bit part in the new movie, a crush on her mother's hunky young costar, and a chance for mother and daughter to get matching tattoos. Collins and Rideout tell a familiar story with fresh energy and interesting characters, casting Leigh as a likable, spunky American teen discovering new talents and an appreciation for all things Irish. Readers will have fun watching Leigh catch the acting bug and cheer her on as she holds her own with her diva mother. Cindy Welch

entertaining
By Sydnie
It was a fun read. I thought the plot was interesting and there is always something slightly intriguing about the movie industry. I thought the main character was rather immature for a 15 year old though, but maybe I'm mistaken, lol, but I think I was much more mature than that when I was 15. It was predictable but I still liked it and the main reason I bought it was actually for the research, I wanted to know more about making movies as I want to write something of my own that takes place on the set of a movie. As far as that goes, things are rather unspecific but it helps give you a bit better feel for things.

I think it's a good read for anyone under 15 and still interesting if you're older than that.

Depending on who you buy it from though, mine came with two big stickers on the cover that left big sticky patches and ripped paper behind.

Great Teen Summer Read
By Dorrie Wheeler
School is out and here is a wonderful new book for your summer reading collection. Vivien Leigh Reid-Daughter of the Diva (St. Martins) by Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout. is an enjoyable book that teens will enjoy. When you pick up the book, it seems like it's kind of a long one, but in reality the book is only just over 200 pages and it's a quick fast paced read. Actually, it's 227 pages although the page at Amazon says 277 pages. Vivien Leigh Reid-Daughter of the Diva is about a young girl named Leigh.

You can almost picture this film as a starring vehicle for Dakota Fanning when she get's a little bit older or better yet, Jami Lynn Spears. The story is told first person by Leigh. She day dreams about situations in her life and they appear on the page like lines from a script. Her mother is an actress and Lynn is not thrilled with her mother's choices in movies. She expresses that her mother's specialty is "low budget, made for TV vixens and tramps." Her life is thrown for a twist when she finds out she has to spend part of her summer in Ireland with her mother who is filming a movie.

The film really reads like a movie. You can picture the scenes in your head. You know Annika and Leigh are going to have to learn to get along. It's kind of hard to picture a young woman not being so fond of her mother, so you know before the book ends they will warm up to each other. The mother seems like a very stereotyped diva. When Leigh arrives in Ireland she says via an e-mail message, "Mom worse thN eva."

This is an enjoyable read. Read this one now so when the movie comes out you can say you read the book first. There is a sequel. Vivien Lee Reid: Diva In Training is due in 2006.

introducing....fun!
By kittycat
Vivien Leigh Reid hasn't spent quality time with her mother, a b list movie/telivision star, in years. So naturally she is less than thrilled about her father shipping her off to Ireland, the location of her mother's new movie, for the summer. When she arrives, there is no surprise. Her mother is being her typical diva self....she even insists that Viv pretends to be her sister so that no one will guess her real age. However, what Viv was expecting to be the worst summer ever brightens up as she lands a bit part in the movie. She also develops a crush on her mother's hunky young costar. Just when she thinks life is getting interesting, her mother steps in. She tries to sabatoge her daughter in the movie, and flirts with Viv's new crush, even though he's old enough to be her son! Viv, sick and tired off her mother, the selfish diva, decides to take off on her own. Revenge isn't so sweet when you're lost and penniless in a foreign country, though. Will Viv patch things up with her mother...or will she leave the diva behind for good?

The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith, by Irshad Manji

"I have to be honest with you. Islam is on very thin ice with me.... Through our screaming self-pity and our conspicuous silences, we Muslims are conspiring against ourselves. We're in crisis and we're dragging the rest of the world with us. If ever there was a moment for an Islamic reformation, it's now. For the love of God, what are we doing about it?"

In this open letter, Irshad Manji unearths the troubling cornerstones of mainstream Islam today: tribal insularity, deep-seated anti-Semitism, and an uncritical acceptance of the Koran as the final, and therefore superior, manifesto of God's will. But her message is ultimately positive. She offers a practical vision of how Islam can undergo a reformation that empowers women, promotes respect for religious minorities, and fosters a competition of ideas. Her vision revives "ijtihad," Islam's lost tradition of independent thinking. In that spirit, Irshad has a refreshing challenge for both Muslims and non-Muslims: Don't silence yourselves. Ask questions---out loud. The Trouble with Islam Today is a clarion call for a fatwa-free future.

Amazon.com Review
This "call for reform" reads like an open letter to the Muslim world. Irshad Manji, a Toronto-based television journalist, was born to Muslim parents in South Africa. Her family eventually fled to Canada when she was two years old. Manji shares her life experiences growing up in a Western Muslim household and ask some compelling questions from her feminist-lesbian-journalist perspective. It is interesting to note that Manji has been lambasted for being too personal and not scholarly enough to have a worthwhile opinion. Yet her lack of pretense and her intimate narrative are the strengths of this book. For Muslims to dismiss her opinions as not worthy to bring to the table is not only elitist; it underscores why she feels compelled to speak out critically. Intolerance for dissent, especially women's dissent, is one of her main complaints about Islam. Clearly, her goal was not to write a scholarly critique, but rather to speak from her heartfelt concern about Islam. To her fellow Muslims she writes: I hear from a Saudi friend that his country's religious police arrest women for wearing red on Valentines Day, and I think, Since when does a merciful God outlaw joy—or fun? I read about victims of rape being stoned for "adultery" and I wonder how a critical mass of us can stay stone silent.

She asks tough questions: "What's with the stubborn streak of anti-Semitism in Islam? Who is the real colonizer of the Muslims—-America or Arabia? Why are we squandering the talents of women, fully half of God's creation?" This is not an anti-Muslim rant. Manji also speaks with passionate love and hope for Islam, believing that democracy is compatible with its purest doctrine. Sure, she's biased and opinionated. But all religions, from Christianity to Buddhism to Islam should be accountable for how their leadership and national allegiances personally affect their followers. One would hope that this honest voice be met with a little more self-scrutiny and a little less anti-personal, anti-feminine, and anti-Western rhetoric. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Islam is "on very thin ice" with one follower, Canadian broadcaster Manji. Her book will be an unsettling read for most of her fellow Muslims, although they may find themselves agreeing with many points. She describes how childhood days spent at her local mosque left her perplexed and irritated; she complains that the Middle East conflict has consumed Muslim minds. She highlights several grievances many Muslims probably share: what she casts as Saudi Arabia's disproportional and destructive influence on Islam, how the hijab, or veil, has become a litmus test for a Muslim woman's faithfulness, and the need to question the accuracy of hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad). The exclusion of women from Muslim leadership is criticized as well. However, Manji's arguments would be better taken-and easier to follow-if not accompanied by an unceasing list of Islam's misdeeds. Manji often chooses the most controversial Koranic passages (rarely providing current scholarship for a more accurate reading of key verses), and her treatment of Islamic history is selective. She mistakes the negative fan mail she receives from Muslims who have seen her on television for the views of all Muslims, and lambastes those who present a sympathetic view of Islam, including the late scholar Edward Said. The writing, though energetic, is unfocused, with personal stories that are sometimes confusing. Although the book raises important points, Manji's angry tone and disjointed writing may obscure some of the valid questions she asks of Islam and Muslims.

From Booklist
Uganda-born Manji fled with her Muslim family of South Asian extraction to Canada when she was two. Growing up there, she was affected as much by North American as by Muslim social conventions, and she became a woman with a career (in broadcasting) and an out lesbian. She remains Muslim, though "hanging on by my fingernails." She questions the sexism, anti-intellectualism, moral superiority and evasion, anti-Semitism, and Arab chauvinism she sees in Islam's public face. And, casting the book as a long open letter, she poses her questions, backed by hard facts and experience, directly to fellow Muslims. Of course, she doesn't shun non-Muslim readers (indeed, her vernacular style encourages them), who stand to be powerfully edified by her critique as well as relieved that, for once, they aren't being blamed for Islam's problems. She maintains that the Qur'an doesn't mandate the evils she sees in institutional Islam and that liberalization is as possible for Islam as it has been for Christianity and Judaism. Her sassy but earnest perspective seems a godsend. Ray Olson

Gain understanding of Islam and the culture. Lots of historical development info.
By J. Smudski
Ive read a few books now by Muslim women and their perspective on Islam and muslim culture. This one gave more details on history and philosophy through the times to improve my very limited understanding. She, as an american born (or arrived young) muslim ,knew very little of why Islam was the way it is and did a tremendous amount of research to put this together for our edification and as a hope for a dialogue within the muslim world to address the problems she see's there. Most if not all of her observations match those of the other authors. She put in much more of the history of the whole process from the prophet to where Islam is today.

A daring if somewhat unbalanced critique.
By James Shaffer-Bauck
While I greatly appreciate the critique of Islam casting other ideologies as superior by comparison a bit of a stretch. The entities used as standards against which Islam is judged are responsible for actions at least as egregious as those of radical Islamists. Far more innocent people have been slaughtered and displaced by Western aggression than by Islamic terrorists.
