From Publishers Weekly
Sun, founder of digsmagazine.com, a "home & living guide for the post-college, pre-parenthood, quasi-adult generation," compiles her design and decorating knowledge in this nifty book that deserves to be on the short list of college graduation presents. Sun rushes through pre-move-in decisions (go solo or find a roommate? Live in sin? What's more important-location or size?) before plunging into a bevy of budget-minded decorating tips. Some of the information, like shopping at thrift stores and estate sales, is common sense, but little tips like bringing a blanket, bungee cord and rope to ensure large items make it home in one piece set the book apart. It's chapter four that will end up the most dog-eared, as it's home to a multitude of tips on thoughtfully decorating apartments: finding focal points, paring down to the essentials and planning it out on paper first will all be of tremendous help for novices. By artfully walking the line between open-mindedness and a knowledge of one's own decorating style, those following Sun's advice will be rewarded with an affordably decorated, unique and comfortable home.

Nothing New In This Book
By Jessica Inman
My biggest complaint with this book is that there is no new information in it that you haven't already read or heard somewhere else. Additionally, this author's personal style seems to be to collect a lot of stuff, which could ultimately lead to a cluttered home. I liked the chapter on how to decorate your walls by making your own art. But over all, not any new information, and the author is very wordy. She takes numerous pages to say simple things. One more complaint, but a minor one, is that the photos in this book are black and white, not in color.

Excellent for budget-minded decorators!
By KirstenL4W
First, let me start by saying that I thought there would be more pictures in this book. I'm very visual and that's usually what drives me to buy decorating books. But that alone did not distract me, and since it's mentioned numerous times in the book that the author is also the editor of Digsmagazine.com, I can pop in there to augment all the great information in this book.

Usually books about decorating, which is such a visual thing to begin with, have lots of pictures and very little text. If there is a lot of text in the book, it's usually pretty boring and hard to stay focused. Not so with this book. Yee-fan Sun's style of writing is very conversational and easy to read. The best part is that unlike other books on budget decorating or appealing to the newly free, she takes into consideration that many of us on a budget are renting and usually aren't allowed to make changes to our pads. Yee-fan provides plenty of easy, inexpensive, and temporary ways to inject personality into the cookie cutter apartments that we live in. Since she's lived all over the world on a starving student's budget, Yee-fan really knows what she's talking about.

It's a lot of reading, but if you want to give your place a huge dose of personality without blowing the budget, this is the book for you!

look cool for cheap

Yee-fan really knows what she is talking about... too many style books offer great ideas, but their idea of a "budget" includes $200 pillows. Buy this book for amazing style on a realistic budget!

Face Your Fear: Living with Courage in an Age of Caution, by Shmuley Boteach

A world famous thinker, author, lecturer, and activist, whose diverse, acclaimed and immensely popular body of work covers such subjects as religion, relationships, and bravery, Boteach now turns his attention to America's present state of mind and comes to the conclusion that fear is crippling society with unprecedented force. The only way to escape this climate is to learn what fear is and how to overcome it.

He tackles fear headlong and answers the following questions: What is fear? What is it doing to us? Why is it affecting us now more than ever before? How can we be so powerful a society yet so succeptible to fear? How can we conquer it? Why do we need to conquer it?

Face Your Fear is a book so relevant that it has a chance to be absorbed by society's consciousness and to change the way we think.

From Publishers Weekly
Boteach's newest book reads like a film that stretches two hours but could have been wrapped up in 30 minutes. All fear, he posits, is a "toxic emotion" rooted in the "fear that you don't matter." In Part I, "The Case Against Fear," he draws on innumerable anecdotes from his work as a rabbi and counselor, but his generalizations are backed by little proof. ("No woman ever fears breast cancer," he writes. "Rather she fears her inability to deal with it.") To help readers eradicate fear from their lives, he presents 32 practical strategies in Part II that include dedicating your life to something higher, becoming a leader, "killing" your television, reconnecting with family, doing good, raising fearless children and building community. Each chapter begins with a biblical citation, but it is only in Part II that Boteach draws out that religious content. Boteach's approach veers from personal friend to questioning therapist to exhortative observer of American life, with an occasional shot of humor. The book's value lies in his insistence that fear is something entirely within readers' control, a choice that he correctly calls "immensely liberating."

We are all timid about something
By Jeanne
Rabbi Boteach was on the View a year ago and I found him fascinating. He talked about Kosher Sex and I felt like his perspective was unique and personal, so, after reading that book I read this one asking myself how has fear limited my life?

We are sold fear all of the time, fear of wars, instability, disease, and sadly, fear of our Creator, G-d, which strangled our life. Between this brilliant Rabbi and Matthew Fox I am redrawing my image of my spiritual source and this specific book is so deeply rewarding to uncover our lack of confidence and daring, which limits our expansive nature, limits our search and allows us to settle rather than trust fate and fearlessly go for what we want, despite the hardships. Great read. Applies universally to us all, because we are all scared.

It will change the way you think and live life to the fullest!
By Amazon Customer
It's a lifesaver. Mr. Shmuley Boteach has been given the gift of wisdom for him to impart these truthful observations about fear, for all of us. Fear is a basic emotional ingredient in our lives, and a useless one at that. He teaches us how to combat it. And combat it for good.

God led me to buy this book, just when I Needed it Most. It's honest and very readable. Mr. Shmuley, thank you!

An excellent book on fear
By Nomad
I bought this book after seeing Rabbi Shmuley on his television show, which I believe airs on The Learning Channel (TLC). He artfully helps mend families who are near the breaking point. His wisdom and talent are beyond the beyonds if you ask me.

The ideas in the book are enlightening/thought provoking. He mentions the idea that our greatest fear is the fear of being insignificant, which is something I had never thought about and feel is likely true.

I enjoy the way the author uses wonderfully profound and inspirational quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Major concepts within each chapter are highlighted in bold.

My only objection to this book is the frequent mention of political ideas/concepts. I found myself laughing a few times that the Rabbi was indeed without fear to include so many references to world politics/civics, etc. that it might be a distraction for some readers. Due to this little "flaw," my ideal rating for the book would be a "4.5"

However, do not let that detract you from buying this book. It seems to be written with a lot of wisdom, experience and love.

The headlines only reveal half the truth. Here’s the real story. . . .

Abu Qasim, the ruthless and cunning Al Qaeda leader who nearly succeeded in blowing up a meeting of the G-8 in Paris, has escaped from the grasp of the Americans and is plotting his next move. A small band of powerful men, highly placed leaders of industry and politics in the West, have decided they need to target and destroy the terrorist and his inner circle before he can strike again. When a prominent Russian dissident is poisoned in London, however, it’s clear that there’s a very dangerous leak within the ranks of the Westerners, and that Abu Qasim has turned the tables on his rivals---it is now he who is pursuing, and his aim is to kill.

Admiral Jake Grafton dispatches special agent Tommy Carmellini to infiltrate the plot. He tracks the gorgeous and seductive Marisa Petrou, a Frenchwoman who may be Qasim’s daughter and who has her own reasons for wanting him alive---or wishing him dead. Qasim, meanwhile, has a trick up his sleeve---one that he’s been planning for years.

Who is behind the methodical assassinations of the wealthy and powerful Western vigilante team? Will Abu Qasim slip the noose once again? In this pulse-pounding thriller, Tommy Carmellini must put a stop to a master of terror before he unleashes even more death.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Coonts's exciting third thriller to star reformed burglar turned CIA operative Tommy Carmellini (after The Traitor) raises a timely issue—the lack of well-to-do Americans on combat duty in the war against terrorism. When an Iraqi bomb kills Huntington Winchester's only child, a Harvard med student who joined the navy out of patriotism, the grieving father decides he and his privileged friends aren't doing enough to defend civilization against the jihadist threat. Winchester gets tacit approval from one of those friends, the unnamed U.S. president, for him and some other well-to-do types to finance their own private war. When al-Qaeda mastermind Abu Qasim discovers the identities of those in Winchester's group and targets them, Carmellini and his CIA boss, Adm. Jake Grafton, determine to set a trap that involves Qasim's possible daughter. Though the constant switching between various points-of-view distracts at times, the action moves swiftly to its Hollywood ending. Author tour. (Aug.) ""

CIA agents Tommy Carmellini and Jake Grafton return in this follow-up to The Traitor (2006). A ruthless terrorist, Abu Qasim, escaped their clutches in the earlier adventure, and now they are desperate to capture him. When a Russian dies of radiation poisoning, it’s clear that Qasim may be in possession of a nuclear weapon. Meanwhile, Carmellini finds himself falling in love with a woman he has been assigned to protect, even though she may be working with the terrorist. Coonts has never been known for graceful prose, and this time that flaw is particularly evident in a series of similarly worded death scenes. In addition, the narrative never really catches fire, plodding along to its obvious conclusion. Still, Coonts’ fans are legion, and they are sure to be forgiving. --Jeff Ayers

Long Take Off Roll On This One
By John R. Linnell
Stephen Coonts is a pilot and a novelist. This book had me stumped for a while as the narrative just kept plodding along. I have read a lot of accounts lately of the Eighth Air Force in England during WW2 and this book reminded me of the long take off roll of a fully loaded B-17 on the way to Germany. Gathering speed slowly, all engines straining, the bomber leaves the air strip with little to spare and slowly forms up with its mates and heads to the target.

For what seemed like the longest time, I wondered if this book was ever going anywhere. The plot line has been explained by others and maybe it is necessary to take so much time to wind this story up, however once we get to the point where the bodies on both sides start droppping like flies, things get very interesting.

This author has given us a lot of very readable novels in the past and while this one isn't his best, there is still some bite in his writing and I am glad I stuck it out. That may not be the highest praise, but it is honest.

From Publishers Weekly
Tennessee Williams's 1947 masterpiece took Broadway by storm and made the brooding Marlon Brando a star. Blanche DuBois's last line, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers," has become a cliché, but Staggs (All About All About Eve; Close-Up on Sunset Boulevard) argues that the whole play is a seminal work, which still "seduces with its disordered exoticism and its power to engulf." He has crafted an entertaining behind-the-scenes narrative of both the play and the film—from Williams's early drafts to the film's battles with Hollywood censors. Rather than dwell on academic interpretations of Streetcar, Staggs takes a more personal tack. He profiles everyone from director Elia Kazan to Jessica Tandy (Broadway's Blanche) as well as backstage personnel. The result is a comprehensive minihistory of 20th-century American stage and screen. And he doesn't stint on tabloid juice, either, noting that both Vivien Leigh and Kazan had voracious sexual appetites. He also incorporates playful trivia, such as a Jeopardy!-style quiz on actresses who've played Blanche. The inclusion of such lighthearted information balances Staggs's absorbing account of the creation of and continued fascination with this American classic. Photos.

From the Back Cover
“WHEN BLANCHE MET BRANDO: The Scandalous Story of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ promises something salacious but delivers something better…a witty, insightful probe of Tennessee Williams’ most famous play in all its variations.”—The Dallas Morning News

The play launched Marlon Brando’s career, and the movie shot his star into the stratosphere.  The film also redefined Vivien Leigh as another kind of Southern belle: Blanche as Scarlett on the skids.  And the movie as modern audiences know it barely escaped the unforgiving knife of censorship. “A Streetcar Named Desire” is more than a classic piece of American art—it’s a daring and raw masterpiece as alive with meaning today as it was when first performed in 1947.

Witty, rich with detail and exuberantly opinionated, WHEN BLANCHE MET BRANDO is the full behind-the-scenes story of “A Streetcar Named Desire.”  Moving from the opening of Tennessee Williams’ groundbreaking play and the scandalized audiences it left on Broadway to its London debut to Elia Kazan’s exceptional movie version, Staggs illuminates “Streetcar’s” surprising complexities and the powerhouse personalities behind them.

“Staggs’ book is an excellent companion piece, giving a fine and often funny account of the many difficulties Williams’ story faced on the way to becoming history.”—Reuters

What about the other Stanleys?
By hooligan
I enjoyed Sam Staggs' book about "Streetcar!" However, I didn't find it as thorough as his other books about "All About Eve" and "Sunset Boulevard." There were plenty of details about the Brando-Tandy & Brando-Leigh versions of "Streetcar," but hardly a mention of the Ralph Meeker and Anthony Quinn/Uta Hagen productions of "Streetcar...!" There was one humourous mention of Judith Evelyn as Blanche, but I would have been more interested in hearing about these two versions rather than all the other operatic and various foreign productions of "Streetcar"!

Entertaining - but not more and not always
By Leser
Like other reviewers, I was delighted to find a book dedicated to the fabulous "Streetcar named Desire". The book doubtlessly is entertaining, at least most of the time. The style is chatty, the author indulges in rumors, anecdotes and gossip, never hesitating to give a highly subjective viewpoint. As he doesn't pretend to be objective, I didn't mind too much, though I would have preferred more information and less gossip. Still, most of it was amusing to read. I don't know much about Brando and the author's chit-chatty information about him made Brando come to life for me. - Sometimes, I was a bit lost when the author seemed to forget that not everybody is as familiar with all Hollywood personalities or wannabee personalities. His overly familiar way of talking about people I never heard of, the lack of at least one or two sentences of background information, made some passages unclear to me.

What I thoroughly enjoyed were the interpretations of the play and its characters, some by the author himself, some quoted from others. I would have liked more of this. Also, his description of mimic and camera work during the first scene of the movie was very perceptive. I watched this scene right afterwards and did see it with different eyes. Again, more of that would have been great. Those - in my opinion - were the best parts of the book.

As mentioned by another reviewer, the information about Vivien Leigh and her being affected by playing Blanche was highly insufficient. It is such a fascinating topic and one that would have deserved more coverage. I was disappointed by the lacklustre handling of this topic. Also, less rehashed gossip and more information would have improved the chapter on Vivien Leigh tremendously.

Generally, I was often surprised - and disappointed - by the author's choice of what to cover in great detail and what to cover only cursorily. I didn't need to know every memo, phone call and detail of the preproduction phase. Many of the actor biographies were extremely boring. If someone did nothing interesting apart from having a tiny part in Streetcar named Desire, I don't want to read about that person's life in detail. The chapter on several actresses who played Blanche or could have played Blanche was tedious. The author gives descriptions of several actresses and how they got to play Blanche. Most of the time, these descriptions weren't interesting, they didn't contain any additional information except for "XY always wanted to play Blanche and then played her in XY theatre on this date." This doesn't make good reading. It could have been limited to the few interesting background stories.

Sometimes, the writing seemed utterly unstructured. Anecdotes are written down without a combining element, without any attempt to get some nice writing style into them. Three sentences about a Karl Malden anecdote are written at the end of a one-page paragraph with Brando anecdotes, then a new paragraph is started. The Karl Malden anecdote is out of place and one wonders whether nobody edited this book. Small things like this appear repeatedly, making for uninspired writing. This contrasts with several other chapters, giving the impression that the author didn't care about all of his topics.

So, in total, this book is a mixture of highly entertaining, at times witty observations and bland listings of uninteresting facts or gossip. It did give me new information about the play, the movie and some of the actors, but in my opinion it suffers too many weaknesses to be recommendable.

Facts filtered through opinion...
By Todd E. Babcock
The title of this book is by no means deceiving in it's pulp/tabloid style. The author, while having done much research, revels in his own streaming opinions about Williams, Brando, 'Streetcar' and more importantly, what he 'thinks' happened based on pure speculation. Theres no doubt the simple facts of this production and its titan creators is enough to be compelling material but I often found some of the belittling commentary irritating.

An entire paragraph on Brando's "bubble butt" or describing LAST TANGO IN PARIS as "limp-dick cinema" should give the reader some idea of the level of cattiness married to erudition you have here. If you are looking for less of a 'personal' contribution from the author I would recommend Donald Spoto's book on Williams and Peter Manso's on Brando (the latter cited repeatedly in this book).

If you are simply looking for an information-laden, STAR magazine read for the summer...you've come to the right place. Or, if you're like me, you want any kernal of wisdom not already covered in other tomes (i.e. Kazan's A LIFE) you may turn over a few stones between the speculation and hetero-phobic opinions.

Sovereign Ladies: Sex, Sacrifice, and Power--The Six Reigning Queens of England, by Maureen Waller

In the bestselling tradition of authors Antonia Fraser and David Starkey, Maureen Waller has written a fascinating narrative history---a brilliant combination of drama and biographical insight---of the six women who have ruled England in their own names.

In the last millennium there have been only six English female sovereigns: Mary I and Elizabeth I, Mary II and Anne, Victoria and Elizabeth II, who celebrated her eightieth birthday in 2006. With the exception of Mary I, they are among England’s most successful monarchs. Without Mary II and Anne, the Glorious Revolution of 1688 might not have taken place. Elizabeth I and Victoria each gave their name to an age, presiding over long periods when the country made significant progress in the growth of empire, prestige, and power. All of them have far-reaching legacies. Each faced personal sacrifices and emotional dilemmas in her pursuit of political power. How to overcome the problem of being a female ruler when the sex was considered inferior? Does a queen take a husband and, if so, how does she reconcile the reversal of the natural order, according to which the man should be the master? A queen’s first duty is to provide an heir to the throne, but at what cost? In this richly compelling narrative, Maureen Waller delves into the intimate lives of England’s queens regnant in delicious detail, assessing their achievements from a female perspective.

From Publishers Weekly
Waller (Ungrateful Daughters: The Stuart Princesses Who Stole Their Father's Crown) highlights the triumphs and travails of England's six female monarchs: Anne, the two Marys, the two Elizabeths and Victoria. In Waller's view, Mary II and Victoria colluded in their own diminishment by domineering husbands. Elizabeth II, portrayed as passive and unimaginative, indulged her mother while wounding her husband by keeping the Windsor name, and surrendered her prerogative to choose a midterm prime minister. Often wrongly dismissed as a fat, sickly dullard, says Waller, Anne was politically shrewd and ambitions to be queen, instigating malicious rumors that her Catholic half-brother was a changeling. Waller says that the burning of Protestant Archbishop Cranmer for heresy was a propaganda disaster for Mary I, while image-conscious Elizabeth I promoted her own association with the Virgin Mary. Separate chapters for each sovereign make for repetitious reading on the Stuart sisters; other stories—like Mary I's phantom pregnancy and Elizabeth II's blunders after Princess Diana's death—are familiar. Yet revelations about the less frequently dissected Mary and Anne Stuart are welcome, and Waller's vigorous, substantive prose takes no prisoners, whether calling Edward VI a cold, imperious little prig or Prince Charles and siblings arrogant, spoilt and selfish. 16 pages of color illus. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Six women have sat on the English throne as sovereigns in their own right, not simply as consorts of kings. Waller cogently and perceptively prepares a sequence of profiles of Mary I, Elizabeth I, Mary II, Anne, Victoria, and Elizabeth II, in which she imparts, in professional but eminently clear prose, these half-dozen women's essential personal qualities, at the same time linking their stories by the thread of their common dilemma: having to, as a female sovereign, reconcile womanhood with performing on the "job" as would a male ruler. Henry VIII's eldest daughter, Mary I, was the first queen regnant, and her limitations as personality and politician did not establish a sturdy precedent for female sovereignty. However, King Henry's second daughter, Elizabeth I, eschewed attempting to be both woman and ruler ("married" only to England and thus never an actual wife and mother) and succeeded in being the country's best monarch of either gender. Of the two Stuart sister-queens, Mary II proved an intelligent monarch whose competence revealed itself in time, and Anne was an ordinary person reigning over dynamic times. Despite some rough patches, the long reigns of Victoria and her great-great-granddaughter, the present sovereign, Elizabeth II, brought them great personal respect. History at its most readable. Review

“In the last millennium, there have been only six female sovereigns of the British Empire. In Sovereign Ladies, Maureen Waller looks at the unique challenges and sacrifices each of these women faced. A rich, engaging narrative that explores their political triumphs and failures, revealing the reigning queens as shrewd enough to succeed in a realm that had no place for woman. Waller also examines the personal compromises each monarch faced, as they struggled to balance the traditional duties of wife and mother with the demands of holding the most powerful position in the nation.”—History magazine

“Deeply detailed… Waller’s take is refreshingly feminist.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Waller has written another book to delight British history students, teachers, and fans… Highly recommended.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“Waller’s vigorous, substantive prose takes no prisoners.” —Publishers Weekly

“Absorbing, thought-provoking historical narrative in vigorous prose that transports readers absolutely into the minds and times of these monarchs, while examing their lives, loves, travails, and work from a female point of view… [Waller] is intimate with, rationally sympathetic to, and honest about her subject ladies…  Sovereign Ladies offers illuminating perspectives about the foundations of the English monarchy.”—BookPage

“Waller’s thoughtful scholarship is an antidote to the frenzied portrayals of media-age royals.” —Newark Star Ledger

“Sovereign Ladies contains facts you may not know. Even if you’re well versed with the history of the queens in this book, you will learn something new about each one. If you love the British monarchy you will want to read this book.”—The British Weekly and Hollywood Today

Interesting if you don't know much about these queens, dull if you do.
By Rebecca Huston
History is one of those subjects that endlessly fascinates me. And one of my favourite times and places is England. So it was pretty much a given that I would pick up Maureen Waller's latest study on the six women who have ruled as monarchs in their own right.

The six women here enjoy a unique position in history, ruling alone (with one exception) and helping to shape what we now know as England. Each one had a very different personality and would help to provide plenty of legend and mythology to what we think of as a Queen. One of them is still living, and several have become icons in the modern mind.

Mary I, Elizabeth I, Mary II, Anne, Victoria and Elizabeth II, are probably better known than their male counterparts. They have been the subjects of innumerable books and films, and have inspired the arts, social custom and were often the catalysts for change in the time that they ruled.

I have to say, I was not that impressed by this book. Each queen is covered in a series of vignettes, most of them rather scanty and feeling rushed, despite the attempt of the author to provide some historical and personal details. If that wasn't enough, Waller also tries to include some psychological insights, and also some medical theories as to why each woman behaved the way she did. The result is a thin narrative that doesn't really satisfy.

Technically, the stories are written in a bland, matter-of-fact way that left me feeling rather bored by the stories, despite quite a bit of drama that occurs in each life. What I was hoping for was something new -- after all, how many more biographies of Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria can the market handle? And Waller has already written an outstanding book about Mary II and Anne titled Ungrateful Daughters, about James II and the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

Along with the narrative, there are two inserts of colour and black and white photographs, as well as genealogical tables. The bibliography is about the best thing here, giving plenty of ideas for further research.

Summing up, I would recommend this one for someone who doesn't know very much about the subject, but if you've already read biographies about these women, and are looking for something new, it's going to be a pretty dull read. Throughout the book, my attention kept wandering and I found myself bored silly. That's not a good sign, especially with history. Waller has already proved that she can do much better than this, and it's a real disappointment overall.

Three stars overall. Somewhat recommended.

A great read.
By Maria Beadnell
Seven personalities, not six, are on display here, the reigning queens' and Ms. Waller's.

She doesn't condescend to the reader or get too lofty either; she assumes you're pretty educated, anyway, if you're reading this work, but not an expert on this subject. I loved her "voice;" it was friendly, highly personal--yet her research was impressive. I can't imagine trying to make sense of the huge amounts of often conflicting information.

Like Antonia Fraser, Waller assumes the reader has a good command of foreign languages, so if, like me, you last opened a Latin book sometime in the 80's be prepared to miss a point here and there.

In some places, I noticed sparks of startling misogyny. For example, Edward, son of Henry VIII was dying and his caretakers dismissed his physicians and brought in "a female quack." Well, maybe she was a quack and maybe she wasn't, but Edward was dying anyway and Ms. Waller didn't criticize the males who failed to save him. (Frankly, I wouldn't want to be treated by a medieval or Ren doctor of either sex.) In another section, she praises Elizabeth II for thinking "like a man." Hardly words I'd expect from a woman writing about comparatively powerful women!

Waller succeeds in finding the personalities of all the queens, and since I never found anything interesting about either Anne or Mary II it was fascinating to feel them in particular come alive.

All in all, I greatly enjoyed this book that gave wonderfully readable stories of the queens that were more than regents.

Biographical insight of six incredible women
By Marilynn T. Doore
Sovereign Ladies scrutinizes the six reigning queens of England: Mary I, Elizabeth I, Mary II, Anne, Victoria, and Elizabeth II. The idea of a regnant female is one that through the ages has proved an uncomfortable topic. Questions have been raised time and time again of the fitness of a woman to rule in a man's world tied as they are to their physical bodies and the expectations of females in marriage and childbearing.

The six queens in this book vary in how they coped with the accident of history which put them on the throne. Although England does not have the Salic Law of France which prohibits women from ruling it was never a comfortable prospect. It was felt that women were to provide heirs and that their minds and intellect were not capable of handling matters of state. The lives of these six incredible women bely as well as refute some of these beliefs. Their lives were a constant struggle to rule amongst men and to fulfill their function as women to provide an heir-male.

Mary I failed in statesmanship and the provision of an heir, undeniably Elizabeth I was one of the greatest monarchs in English history but she too failed to provide an heir, Mary II let her husband William III rule in their joint names, Anne ruled well and efficiently but could not give England an heir despite the fact she gave birth to seventeen children, Victoria provided the heir but during her reign the monarchy devolved into the constitutional monarchy England has today, and Elizabeth II fulfilled her mission to provide an heir and continues to serve as a figurehead and an example to her people and reigns without actually ruling.

Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do, by Michael J. Tougias

In the midst of the Blizzard of 1978, the tanker Global Hope floundered on the shoals in Salem Sound off the Massachusetts coast. The Coast Guard heard the Mayday calls and immediately dispatched a patrol boat. Within an hour, the Coast Guard boat was in as much trouble as the tanker, having lost its radar, depth finder, and engine power in horrendous seas. Pilot boat Captain Frank Quirk was monitoring the Coast Guard's efforts by radio, and when he heard that the patrol boat was in jeopardy, he decided to act. Gathering his crew of four, he readied his forty-nine-foot steel boat, the Can Do, and entered the maelstrom of the blizzard.

Using dozens of interview and audiotapes that recorded every word exchanged between Quirk and the Coast Guard, Tougias has written a devastating, true account of bravery and death at sea, in Ten Hours Until Dawn.

From Publishers Weekly
Before The Perfect Storm, there was the 1978 blizzard that lashed the Massachusetts coast with blinding snow, 90-mile-per-hour winds and 40-foot waves. Into the juggernaut sailed the small boat Can Do and its crew of five civilians on a doomed mission to assist two other vessels imperiled by the storm. As in The Perfect Storm, all hands were lost; but since the Can Do sank only a few agonizing miles from shore, there are records of terse radio transmissions to help the author recreate their last desperate hours. Journalist Tougias (The Blizzard of '78) fills out his absorbing account with lots of search-and-rescue procedural details, recollections from others who endured the monstrous seas of that hellish night and 300 years' worth of maritime disaster sagas. At times, the book feels padded with lengthy, adulatory back stories about the Can Do crew and needless speculations (i.e., "Kenny Fuller likely thought of his wife, knowing that if he died it would be especially hard on her"). And the story's outcome-the Can Do never got anywhere near the boats it went to help, both of which survived the storm-raises questions about the wisdom of the heroic ethos it celebrates. Still, Tougias delivers a well-researched, vividly written tale of brave men overwhelmed by the awesome forces of nature. Photos.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Arguably the best story of peril at sea since Sebastian Junger's Perfect Storm (1997), this superb narrative deals with the blizzard of 1978, which hammered New England with hurricane-force winds and torrents of snow. When the tanker Global Hope ran aground off Salem, Massachusetts, and Coast Guard rescuers quickly got in trouble, pilot-boat skipper and ex-Seabee Frank Quirk took his converted yacht Can Do into the teeth of the gale to rescue even the rescuers. Then the weather took down Can Do's radio and power, and she eventually went on the rocks and was lost with all hands. Tougias has researched exhaustively and written what amounts to a collective biography of Quirk and his right good crew, including their families and the suffering they endured after husbands and fathers died. His balancing of human and technical detail is nearly perfect, and he has made the book accessible even to relative newcomers to maritime literature. Serious maritime buffs may well feel like firing 21-gun salutes, and all readers may sincerely hope that Tougias will produce further such superb chronicles of those "who go down to the sea in ships and have their business in great waters." “Tougias spins the yarn with tense realism and you'll find yourself turning the pages at an alarming rate.” ―The Valley Advocate

“I was a college senior in Providence, Rhode Island, during the Blizzard of '78---a meteorological holocaust of snow and wind that I'll never forget. To learn twenty-six years later that there were men brave enough to attempt a rescue at sea during that storm still has me awestruck with wonder. Michael Tougias's Ten Hours Until Dawn tells their story---an incredible tale of heroism and sacrifice.” ―Nathaniel Philbrick, author of the National Book Award winner and New York Times bestseller In the Heart of the Sea

“With a steady hand, Michael Tougias draws us into the vortex of this historic winter storm of 1978 and a high-seas rescue attempt gone wildly awry. The dynamics of this adventure alone would make it well worth the journey. But as a writer, Tougias's true gift is his ability to plumb the depths of human emotion, to take us ever deeper into the hearts of those who survived the ordeal---and even into the lives of those who did not. He re-creates not only the superhuman efforts between the imperiled crewmen and their would-be rescuers, but the gut-wrenching experience of their loved ones waiting helplessly ashore. In this he clearly succeeds. We come away feeling that we know these people, that we understand what it must have been like for them, and our hearts go out to them.” ―Spike Walker, bestselling author of Coming Back Alive and Working on the Edge

“What a story! Tougias's research and writing make the reader feel as if he is onboard the Can Do during the Blizzard of '78. Ten Hours Until Dawn is a gripping book about a fascinating event of courage and tragedy that few people, including those of us who were deeply involved in fighting that storm, know enough about.” ―Michael Dukakis"

The details at last
By Chip Ford
I'm almost done with a recently released book I was given for Christmas, "Ten Hours Until Dawn." I began reading it but two days ago and don't want to put it down! A great read for the winter house-bound mariners up here, or for the most uninitiated landlubber. It's one of, if not the, best sea tales I've ever read.

It's the true story of the disasterous "Great Blizzard of '78" here at Ground Zero on the North Shore of Massachusetts, the grounding of the oil tanker Global Hope about two or three miles from us, and the rescue attempt turned disaster in the worst winter storm in over 100 years.

Between the herculean and selfless efforts of our local Coast Guard out of Gloucester and pilot boat captain Frank Quirk and his volunteer crew of his Can Do, the nail-biting descriptions of the almost unbelievable conditions out there in my sailing grounds, histories of similar marine crises, and the detailed but easily comprehensible explanations, it's one of those books that keeps you awake after midnight to read "just one more chapter."

This story holds a special significance for me not only because I'm so familiar with the locale and sail it every weekend during the season. During that historic storm I was living-aboard an old wooden 46' power boat tied up to our slip on D dock at Beverly Harbor Marina. Conditions got so bad by early evening that a group of us live-aboards got together with all the lines we had among us and we could get our hands on, tied off our dock to pilings and telephone poles and buildings in the parking lot above us. Above us, until the high-tide surge, when our floating dock rose above the hinged ramp, above the stationary wharf thereby stranding us on our boats, above even the sea wall and parking lot. We watched helplessly from our "island" as the rollers swept across the parking lot to our snow-buried cars! Two of the nearby boat-laden docks broke lose! The snow was so deep that if you didn't walk carefully down the very center of the rolling dock in the howling wind, it'd tip and dump you off.

Word had passed around in our marina that an oil tanker was aground just outside Beverly Harbor and that a rescue effort was underway. We saw the Coast Guard's 41-footer make it in to the Jubilee Yacht Club just next door. But we didn't learn about the tragedy just a few miles out until a day or two later; we were too busy ourselves that night to think to turn on the VHF radio. This is the first time I've learned the details -- and they were incredible, horrific!

I probably knew a few of the Coast Guardsmen quoted throughout who were out there facing death. During the summer of 1977 the Coast Guard used to love "boarding" us. Our boat had become a magnet for some of the ladies of an all-women's college just up the coast, and we four young live-aboards usually had a contingent of them aboard. When off-duty, a few of the Coasties would sometimes come down to the boat for a visit and a few brewskies, hoping we had company aboard.

Reading the details of what happened that night is chilling even almost thirty years later. I clearly recall how bad things were that night, but had no idea how much worse they were just a couple miles out in Salem Sound, or the life-and-death drama that was taking place. That *anyone* survived out there is a miracle -- that anyone *went* out there is unimaginable.

I want my money back!

I love Tougias as a writer and have read many of his books. I'm convinced he had a ghost writer for this one. Definitely one of the most tedious books I've ever read. Each chapter was more painful than the last. How does one with such talent take an extraordinary event and make it dull?

I LOVED this book! I love everything by Michael J. Tougias, but this one was a real gut punch. You get to really feel like you're in the cabin of the Can Do with the men.
