The Fourth Durango, by Ross Thomas

The Fourth Durango is not your ordinary Durango. It's not in Spain, or Mexico, and it's not a ski town in the Colorado Rockies, although Durangos do exist in all of those places. This Durango has an industry, albeit a rather odd one-it is a hideout business, a place where people pay to find sanctuary from former friends and associates who are either trying to kill them, or have them killed. Into this Durango comes a former chief justice of a state supreme court, followed by son-in-law Kelly Vines to act as his emissary to the beautiful and savvy mayor. Following them come a false priest, and a run of murders. It takes a Ross Thomas to stir these characters into a witty and ingenious mix readers will not be able to -and certainly would not want to-resist.

From Publishers Weekly
A tiny, godforsaken California town named Durango is the setting for Thomas's ( Out on the Rim ) tense new novel, a suspense story laced with wry wit. The town's mayor, plucky Barbara Huckins, and its chief of police, Sid Fork, are part-time lovers and ex-San Francisco hippies who drifted into Durango 20 years back. The action begins when Jack Adair, an acid-tongued judge falsely accused of taking a big bribe, drops into Durango to hide from whoever wants him silenced. Poor Adair already has a daughter in a mental hospital, a disbarred attorney for a son-in-law and a gay son who committed suicide (or was it murder?). Barbara and Sid, an unlikely duo assisted by no less than four detectives, follow a trail warm with corpses to a brutal killer who dresses up as a priest or a plumber. The socko climax takes place on the Fourth of July, with readers kept in the dark right through the fireworks. In this offbeat diversion, Thomas builds suspense and character almost casually, once again proving himself a master of the crime thriller. Major ad/promo; Literary Guild alternate; Mystery Guild and Doubleday Book Club selections.

Review
"A sleek powerhouse of a novel, irresistible after the first paragraph."

"A new Ross Thomas turns me back into a reader who forgets what day it is or how many pages there are to go."

About the Author

Ross Thomas is ranked as one of the very top thriller writers by his fellow authors, and his readers loudly agree. Two Edgar Awards, and other prizes, only complement the abundant praise that Thomas has received.

Thomas died in 1995, and since then all but one of his twenty-five novels had gone out of print. This should never have happened to the man of whom The New Yorker has said "Very few...are as consistently entertaining...even fewer can match him for style and power." Minotaur is proud to remedy this situation by reissuing Thomas's novels. So start reading, and prepare to join Ross Thomas's legions of admiring fans.

reprint of a powerful Ross Thomas thriller
By A Customer
Already accused of taking a bribe that he never did, former State Judge Jack Adair hides in Durango, California, a place where people voluntarily vanish to when others want them silenced anyway they can. Durango accommodates its "tourist" trade. His world is already is a cesspool due to his family trials. His daughter is a guest of a mental hospital, his son-in-law is a disbarred attorney and his son apparently committed suicide though the Judge believes murder occurred.
Jack's appearance in town leads to a murder spree. Desperate to stop the killings, sometime lovers Mayor Barbara Huckins and Chief of Police Sid Fork seek a serial killer who poses as a priest or as a plumber. The culprit will have no problem eliminating the two locals if they get in the way of killing the Judge.
This reprint of a powerful Ross Thomas thriller is an exciting tale that will please the fans of the great suspense writer as well as introduce his wonderful repertoire to new readers. The story line is action-packed as the heroes try to stop a killing machine from further homicides. Though not quite at the level of some of Mr. Thomas' other works (see the reprint of TWILIGHT AT MAC'S PLACE), THE FOURTH DURANGO is a terrific tale better than much that is offered today.

Suspense of the First Order
By M.H.
Another pearl of the Ross Thomas oeuvre, two protagonists wish to seek refuge in Durango, a town that makes its income with a very curious illegal enterprise. Again Thomas used his knowledge of political chicanery to imbue his characters (a disbarred lawyer, a crooked chief of police, a convicted state judge) with real life hubris. Lots of fun from the late Grand Master.

Fast Moving Crime Thriller
By Syd Dithers
THE FOURTH DURANGO isn't so much a plot-driven crime thriller: it feels more like a half-dozen clever characters playing the same game of chess (whether they know it or not).

The book begins with a disgraced judge leaving prison as well as a trail of bodies behind as he and his son-in-law/disbarred attorney flee to the quiet town of Durango, California. The sexy, savvy mayor and her lover/Chief of Police make a shady deal to hide them...but the killers who want the judge dead already appear to be in the town limits.

I've never read anything else by Ross Thomas but I did like his wit and economy. You really feel like you're in the hands of someone who knows where he's going and the best way to get there.

The Eagle and the Wolves: A Novel of the Roman Army (Eagle Series), by Simon Scarrow

The most dangerous mission of their military careers awaits two heroes of the Roman army in Britain.

In The Eagle and the Wolves, the epic fourth novel of Simon Scarrow's series, it's A.D. 44 and Vespasian and the Roman Army's Second Legion are forging ahead in their campaign to seize the southwest. Centurion Macro and newly appointed Centurion Cato are ordered by Vespasian to provide Verica, aged ruler of the Atrebates, with an army. They must train his tribal levies into a force that can protect him, enforce his rule, and take on the increasingly ambitious raids that the enemy is launching.

But open revolt is brewing. Despite the Atrebates' official allegiance to Rome, many are wary of the legions and want to resist the Roman invaders, and Macro and Cato must first win the loyalty of the disgruntled levies before tackling the enemy without. Can they succeed while surviving a deadly plot to destroy both them and their comrades serving with the eagles? In the midst of this highly volatile situation, Macro and Cato face the greatest test of their army careers. Theirs is a brazen tale of military adventure, political intrigue, and heroism, as only they stand between the destiny of Rome and bloody defeat.

From Publishers Weekly
Cultural critic for the New York Times, James hangs her inert second novel (after Glorie) on an erotic painting and its repercussions for the reputations of both subject and artist. Caroline Stephens is a beautiful blue blood in Jazz Age New York who becomes a patron of young artists to allay the boredom of her respectable but sleepy marriage and the stuffiness of her old-moneyed social world. Sensuality and propriety, bohemia and convention war within her—but respectability ultimately rules. She promotes a handsome painter, Nick Leone, and is incensed at his betrayal when he reveals a "pornographic" nude of her at his opening exhibition in 1927. A scandal erupts; she insists she never posed for the painting; and she and her family set out to ruin Nick. James frames the story from the viewpoint of Caroline's great-nephew, Philip, at the time of the painting's 2002 exhibition at the Met, but the bulk of the novel consists of Caroline's first-person story as told to Philip. This structure—and several slowly doled out revelations about the real circumstances of Nick and Caroline's relationship—makes for little narrative tension. Add Caroline's implausible callousness as things get worse for Nick, and the result is a muddled read. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Is anything more delicious than a high-society scandal engagingly presented? James' novel suggests nothing is, as art patron Caroline Stephens, daughter of Old New York Society and wife of conservative businessman Harrison Stephens, "plays at being a Medici" in 1927 and wheedles "Harry" into bankrolling a high-profile gallery opening of paintings by Nick Leone. Intimations of trouble come when Harry helps her on with her wrap and remarks, "Is that a dress or a slip?" and a friend, noting the low cut of Caroline's frock, adds, "I must congratulate you on your extremely straight spine." Then Leone unveils a nude portrait of her, later described by newspapers as "lewd" and "pornographic," depicting her "tickling her private parts." She swoons, and scandal envelops her and the painting, which disappears. Flash forward to 2002, when the past is exhumed: the elderly Caroline recalls her flaming youth, which also included making out with the exciting Spencer in an upstairs bedroom while her and Harry's engagement party was in full swing. Love that high society! Whitney Scott

I feel like I missed the punch line.
By Amy Bischoff
This book was an easy read, in fact I read it in an afternoon. It was interesting enough; I kept turning the pages to see what would happen to our dear socialite. She's believable, we feel empathy for her but we never quite understand her. What this book lacks is resolution. I just read 200+ pages and Caroline has still taken secrets to her grave. There are still unanswered questions about the portrait. Maybe it is the author's right to leave a mystery unsolved but it violates the rules of "good" writing not to restore readers to a point of equilibrium and the author never takes us there. In the end, an interesting read but seemingly unfinished.

A SWIFT, FASCINATING READ
By Ellen Pall
With a silky purr, James' protagonist Caroline Stephens draws you effortlessly in to the luxe, luscious world of old New York money in the 1920's. It's a while before you realize that your new friend is a boa constrictor. As the story unfolds, James repeatedly switches the lens through which the reader sees her characters, so that reading the book is like peering into a turning kaleidoscope. The story keeps twisting and tightening right up till the final pages. The book is a pleasure to read: swift, assured and full of wonderful period details.

A PAGE TURNER!
By Thelma Adams
James's juicy novel is an elegant, insightful exploration of one woman's brush with fame and notoriety. It's as lush and seductive as a John Singer Sargent portrait. What Caroline Knew is an absolute must-read that can't be put down once started.

The Revenge of Anguished English: More Accidental Assaults Upon Our Language, by Richard Lederer

Richard Lederer has been called Attila the Pun, Conan the Grammarian, and the Viceroy of Verbivores. In The Revenge of Anguished English, this "Abbot of Absurdity" (as People magazine has dubbed him) leaves us limp with laughter at how the innocent, the negligent, and the pompous mangle the English language. True to the code of this super-duper blooper snooper, all the fluffs and flubs, goofs and gaffes, and blunders, botches, boo-boos, and bloopers are genuine, authentic, certified, and unretouched. Nothing has been made up!

* Student blooper: The four gospels are written by John, Paul, George, and that other guy.
* Science blooper: Elephants eat roots, leaves, grasses, and sometimes bark.
* In a church bulletin: Attend and you will hear an excellent speaker and heave a healthy lunch.
* A headline howler: DENVER CHAPTER WILL HAVE SENATOR FOR BREAKFAST
* On a frozen food package: Defrost your frozen food before eating.
* Misplaced modifier: Children should not drive golf carts under the age of sixteen.
* Spelling error: The driver of the car was cited for wreckless driving.

From Publishers Weekly
Fourth in the Anguished English series (The Bride of Anguished English, More Anguished English, etc.), Lederer's newest collection of grammatical goofs will elicit laughs from start to finish. Cataloguing the hilarious ways in which people mangle the English language, Lederer offers hundreds of new linguistic blunders, from infamous "Bushisms" to poorly worded newspaper headlines. Children, in early experiments with language and logic, utter some of the funniest foul-ups. For example, as a mother desperately pounds catsup out of a bottle, her four-year-old answers the phone and says, "Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle." In another instance, a mother asks her child what she learned on the first day of school, and the child's reply is: "Not enough. They say I have to go back tomorrow." In addition to these "kiddisms," the book touches upon more adult humor, as in a headline that reads: "Soviet Virgin Lands Short of Goal Again." Complete with ridiculously obvious product warnings, church bulletin bloopers and celebrities caught saying the wrong things, this book celebrates the English language by allowing readers to laugh at others' amusing mistakes. 30 b&w line drawings.

From Booklist
Prolific author Lederer has written many language books; this title is part of his ongoing humorous series that began with Anguished English (1987). The book is divided into five sections (each containing from three to five short chapters) covering the funny mistakes made by children, gaffes committed by the famous, botched newspaper headlines and stories, translation problems, and grammatical errors. Each chapter ends with Hall of Fame examples of the topic under discussion. Malapropisms, misplaced modifiers, and unintentionally funny typos are all here, and in between chuckles, readers are sure to learn plenty about proper sentence structure. However, Lederer leads off with what may be the funniest section in the book when he recounts kids' mistakes, especially the student bloopers ("The four gospels were written by John, Paul, George, and that other guy"). The book is so chock-full of humorous examples that readers are bound to laugh at least once per page. Everyone makes mistakes--why are they so much funnier when they are someone else's? Lederer seems to know the answer to that one. Joanne Wilkinson

Not as good as the others
By Denise
The first book in this series had me laughing so hard I was crying. The second one was just as bad (or good), but by the time I got to this book, the humor was getting a bit old. That's not to say it was bad. This book was very funny, and I'd recommend it to anyone who liked the series. It just wasn't as good as the others. (Anguished English, More Anguished English)

This book had me laughing from the very first page!
By Blaine Greenfield
Unfortunately, none of the local papers carry a column, "Looking at Language," by Richard Lederer . . . it is something that I'd definitely want to read--especially after enjoying his

very funny book, THE REVENGE OF ANGUISHED ENGLISH.

In it, he takes actual misuses of the English language and presents them in a series of short chapters that had me laughing from the very first page . . . I never realized that there were so many fluffs and flubs, goofs and gaffes, blunders, botches, boo-boos, and bloopers that are actually run as the gospel, seemingly on a daily basis.

They have been issued by students, run in church bulletins, appeared on frozen food packages, and run in newspapers as headlines.

The tough part in writing this review was to choose just a few examples that I could share, in that there were so many . . . among them:

* On the JOEY BISHOP SHOW, Joey asked Sen. Barry Goldwater if he would like to be on the show twice a week. The senator answered, "I'd much rather watch you in bed with my wife."

* Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?"

"Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life."

The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So why is the groom wearing black?"

* [from the Excuses Hall of Fame]

My son is under the doctor's care. Please execute him.

Please excuse Mary for being absent. She was sick, and I had her shot.

Please excuse Jimmy for being. If was his father's fault.

Please excuse Tom for being absent yesterday. He had diarrhea,

and his boots leak.

Maryann was absent December 11-16 because she had a fever,

sore throat, headache, and upset stomach. Her sister was also sick--fever and sore throat--and her brother had a low-grade fever and ached all over. I wasn't the best either--sore throat and fever. There must be the flu going around school. Her father even got hot last night.

[court Q-and-A]

Q: Where do you live?

A: 2442 Oseawotamire Street

Q: How do you spell that street?

A: S-T-R-E-E-T

* In one edition of today's food section, an inaccurate number of jalapeno peppers was given for Jeanette Crowley's southwestern chicken salad recipe. The Recipe should call for 2, not 21, jalapeno peppers.

* Lost dog-mixed breed, shaggy, left front leg amputated, missing top of right ear, partially blind, tail was broken and healed crooked, some teeth gone, scars on head and back, has been castrated. Answers to name of Lucky

* Spoken by a Los Angeles radio DJ shortly after the 1990 earthquake:

The telephone company is urging people to please not use the telephone unless it is absolutely necessary in order to keep the lines open for emergency personnel. We'll be right back after this break to give away a pair of Phil Collins concert tickets to caller number 95.

I'm still laughing at these so much that I'm now going to get hold of Lederer's first book on the same topic, ANGUISHED ENGLISH.

A Welcome Grave (Lincoln Perry), by Michael Koryta

Sometime after midnight, on a moonless October night turned harsh by a fine, windswept rain, one of the men I liked least in the world was murdered in a field near Bedford, just south of the city....The detectives went looking for suspects--- people whose histories with Jefferson were adversarial and hostile. At the top of that list, they found me.

So begins A Welcome Grave, the third novel by award-winning mystery writer Michael Koryta, featuring private investigator Lincoln Perry. Once a rising star on the Cleveland police force, Perry ended his career when he left one of the city's prominent attorneys, Alex Jefferson, bleeding in the parking lot of his country club---retribution for his affair with Perry's fiancée.
Now Jefferson is dead, the victim of a brutal murder, and his widow has called upon Perry for a favor he knows he shouldn't accept but can't turn down: to find Jefferson's estranged son, partial beneficiary of the dead man's fortune. The case is simple enough, a routine "locate," and he'll be paid plenty of money for the work. The encounter should be simple, too: a brief exchange of information and maybe an empty condolence before Perry gets back into his truck and returns home. Instead, he's loaded into a police car and taken to a rural jail while Jefferson's son is zipped into a body bag.
Perry soon learns that Jefferson's millions are the target of a thirst for revenge that hasn't been satisfied by blood. As a pair of deadly assailants push deep into the investigator's life, they bring with them police from two states who are determined to see Perry in jail.
Building on the skill that prompted the Toronto Sun to call him "one of America's best young mystery writers," Michael Koryta makes A Welcome Grave an intense exploration of the lengths to which a desperate man is forced to go in order to clear his name and solve a crime. This is a thrilling new book that justifies the critical acclaim and solidifies his role as an emerging talent among today's top writers. Praise for Michael Koryta

A WELCOME GRAVE

"For a while now, Michael Koryta has been called one of the rising young talents in crime fiction. I say enough of that. A Welcome Grave proves the promise. Koryta is one of the best of the best, plain and simple. With stories like this, his Lincoln Perry is going to be around for a long, long time."---Michael Connelly, author of The Overlook and the bestselling Harry Bosch series

"With the publication of A Welcome Grave, it's time to stop referring to Michael Koryta as a boy wonder and just focus on the sheer wonder of his storytelling. Koryta knows how to put his characters---and his readers---into an ever-tightening vise of twists, turns, and conspiracies, but it's his empathy that makes his work stand out. This is a nuanced, mature novel that proves both the depth of Koryta's talent and the vitality of the PI genre."--- Laura Lippman, Edgar Award winner and author of No Good Deeds

"In the last few years, new writing talent has entered all subgenres of crime fiction. One of the names at the top of the list is Michael Koryta. He is a breath of fresh air, his writing is clear and concise, and his observations on the darkness of the human condition show how the PI novel is one of the finest forms in all of fiction writing. Mr. Koryta is on his way to being a master of the PI novel, sacred ground indeed."---Richard Katz, Mystery One Bookstore

SORROW'S ANTHEM

"Sorrow's Anthem is no sophomore slump."---The Washington Post

"Koryta displays the maturity of a writer with several novels under his belt, and his plot percolates with crisp dialogue that might impress Chandler himself."---Booklist (starred review)

TONIGHT I SAID GOODBYE

"Say hello to a new crime talent."---Chicago Tribune

"[Koryta] has produced what few thought possible---an incredibly fresh PI novel when the subgenre had been long declared fatigued…Koryta emerges fully formed in his first effort."---The Baltimore Sun

Starred Review. Edgar-finalist Koryta stakes a claim as one of today's pre-eminent crafters of contemporary hard-boiled mysteries with his third Lincoln Perry whodunit (after 2006's Sorrow's Anthem), which finds the cops trying to pin murder charges on the Cleveland PI. Formerly a detective with the Cleveland PD, Perry was forced out of the department when he assaulted a rich lawyer, Alex Jefferson, who had married Perry's still beloved ex, Karen. When Jefferson's brutalized corpse is discovered in a field, suspicion soon focuses on Perry, and the gumshoe only makes more trouble for himself by accepting Karen's commission to find the dead man's estranged son, Matt, who has inherited millions from his father. But no sooner does Perry locate Matt in Indiana than the unwitting heir commits suicide in Perry's presence, another death the authorities find suspicious. Despite Koryta's youth (his 2004 debut, Tonight I Said Goodbye was published when he was 21), his haunting writing and logical, sophisticated plotting rival that of established stalwarts like Loren Estleman. From Booklist
Twenty-three-year-old Koryta was nominated for a 2005 Edgar for his first Lincoln Perry novel Tonight I Said Goodbye (2004). Though Koryta was a criminal-justice major in college, his lean prose would do any English department proud. In this third installment in the series, Perry, a Cleveland cop-turned-PI, faces his most personal case: the brutal slaying of Alex Jefferson, a lawyer who married Karen, Perry's one-time fiancee. Perry's grudge against Jefferson is no secret; he once assaulted the attorney and lost his police badge as a result. In the wake of Jefferson's murder, Karen hires Perry to find the victim's long-estranged son. Perry soon finds himself the chief suspect in Jefferson's murder, framed by a pair of nefarious souls with both motive and means. Perry's gruff but shrewd partner, Joe (also a former cop), proves instrumental in the investigation. But since taking a bullet to the shoulder, he is not so sure he wants to return to his job full-time. Koryta's villains occasionally border on caricature, but that does little to distract from this otherwise top-notch thriller. Allison Block

Today, the Triple Crown. Next year the ?
By Mel Kuhbander
This is the third of the Koryta books that I've read and I have enjoyed every one of them. Other reviewers have referenced the plot line, the character development and how it is even stronger than in the first two novels, and so on. There is almost little to add but I'm going with this.

When the winner of the Kentucky Derby goes on to the Preakness and wins out over all the others but by a larger margin, and then goes to the Belmont and repeats it but by an even larger margin, the world knows it has a champion.

Koryta is young and he is a champion. Each of his works is just, well, better than the one before and what is amazing is that everyone of them reflects superb story telling and writing.

I, for one, am thrilled that Michael Koryta is so very young. He's going to be with us for a long, long time and that is great news for readers of this genre.

I look forward to next year's gift and I am especially anxious to follow the development in Lincoln Perry's personal life with Amy. I admit that I would like to see something that ties in her professional job with a Perry problem while, at the same time, allowing for the evolution of their relationship.

Tough assignment there? Not for Michael Koryta.

The Death of the Grown-Up: How America's Arrested Development Is Bringing Down Western Civilization, by Diana West

"WHERE HAVE ALL THE GROWN-UPS GONE?" That is the provocative question Washington Times syndicated columnist Diana West asks as she looks at America today. Sadly, here's what she finds: It's difficult to tell the grown-ups from the children in a landscape littered with Baby Britneys, Moms Who Mosh, and Dads too "young" to call themselves "mister." Surveying this sorry scene, West makes a much larger statement about our place in the world: "No wonder we can't stop Islamic terrorism. We haven't put away our toys!" As far as West is concerned, grown-ups are extinct. The disease that killed them emerged in the fifties, was incubated in the sixties, and became an epidemic in the seventies, leaving behind a nation of eternal adolescents who can't say "no," a politically correct population that doesn't know right from wrong. The result of such indecisiveness is, ultimately, the end of Western civilization as we know it. This is because the inability to take on the grown-up role of gatekeeper influences more than whether a sixteen-year-old should attend a Marilyn Manson concert. It also fosters the dithering cultural relativism that arose from the "culture wars" in the eighties and which now undermines our efforts in the "real" culture war of the 21st century―the war on terror. With insightful wit, Diana West takes readers on an odyssey through culture and politics, from the rise of rock ‘n' roll to the rise of multiculturalism, from the loss of identity to the discovery of "diversity," from the emasculation of the heroic ideal to the "PC"-ing of "Mary Poppins," all the while building a compelling case against the childishness that is subverting the struggle against jihadist Islam in a mixed-up, post-9/11 world. With a new foreword for the paperback edition, "The Death of the Grown-up," is a bracing read from one of the most original voices on the American cultural scene.

From Publishers Weekly
West, a Washington Times columnist with a hard-line conservative's interest in culture, sounds a dire alarm over an age she sees marked by the mainstreaming of countercultural behavior. An unprecedented reversal of priorities from parents to children has occurred since the 1950s, according to West, allowing for structural failures that permitted the behavioral revolutions of the 1960s to go forward unimpeded. To support her case, West draws on sources generally weighted to the right end of the political spectrum, like Robert Bork and Daniel Pipes. Her examination of the social repercussions of a new youth market would be better grounded within the context of the transformations in postwar American society, but she focuses instead on the negative aspects of these large and complex changes, without reflecting on her underlying assumptions. In her view, the prolonged adolescence of baby boomers has left America open to an insidious Islamization of culture via a misconceived political correctness that can't recognize the dehumanizing ideology of that religion. West, a vocal purveyor of distrust toward Islamic cultures, lays nothing less than the decline of Western civilization on the American counterculture, making her argument compelling only to those already in her corner. From Booklist
Writing in the Washington Times and elsewhere, West has proven to be a caustic critic of contemporary popular culture as well as a hawkish detractor of Islam. With this book, she fleshes out her archconservative worldview by arguing that today's popular culture is complicit in the threat posed to America by Islamic terrorists, and that the 1960s counterculture is to blame. In rejecting time-honored notions of adulthood (read: modesty, self-discipline, respect for authority) in favor of decadence and inclusiveness, she argues, the baby boomers inaugurated a culture of perpetual adolescence that erodes Western cultural identity. Channeling Samuel Huntington, West claims that this erosion of identity renders us incapable of countering potentially existing threats with adequate resolve and harshness. Although its first chapters weave together some anecdotal musings about the rise of youth culture, readers primarily interested in historical analysis might do better elsewhere. Readers seeking a sweeping polemic against the cultural Left, however, will enjoy this jeremiad's fiery indignance and playfully cutting prose. Driscoll, Brendan

Important Insight Into the 20th and 21st C American Psyche
By E. Wagner
Although, for me, The Death of the Grownup dragged a bit through the middle, I came away feeling it is a valuable and important read for anyone trying to understand why we are currently losing the war that Islam is waging against the West.

In The Death of the Grownup, author Diana West builds a convincing case for revolutionary change in Western thinking and behavior. She argues a widespread abdication of adult responsibilities and choices has seriously harmed the West, and she traces the negative impact the culture of what she calls "eternal adolescence" has had on Americans and, more broadly, on all of Western Civilization. West also explores underlying reasons for this dysfunction.

Among several examples of the harmful effects of abdicating adult responsibility, West points to multiculturalism. She posits that instead of looking at the world through the eyes of an adult, who sees differences and makes value judgments, multiculturalists insist that all societies are equal, even though it's obvious that some are more healthy and desirable to live in than others. Says West, to be effective, adults must make decisions; not avoid them. Adults must make choices; not shield our eyes from politically incorrect differences.

West ultimately argues that the culture of eternal adolescence is so deeply embedded in the Western psyche that, unless we begin to nurture the prizing of virtues, or unchanging moral standards, as opposed to moral relativism, or values, which are malleable, we risk the loss of Western Civilization and its many achievements to a resurgent Islamic Civilization, relatively unchanged from its 6th century culture of Islamic supremacism, jihad and conquest.

This is a horrible book. Diana West documents affluent Americans that are ambivalent concerning authority & consistently absolve themselves & their ofspring of responsibilty.

The Peter Pan Syndrome Explored
By Nelson W. Lentz
This is a brilliant and most important work. To quote the liner notes, "No wonder we can't stop Islamic terrorism. We haven't put away our toys! As far as West is concerned, grown-ups are extinct. The disease that killed them emerged in the fifties, was incubated in the sixties, and becanme an epidemic in the seventies, leaving behind a nation of eternal adolescents who can't say no, a politically correct population that doesn't know right from wrong." If everyone in America who can read would read this book and understand what it says, we would have a good chance of defeating the Islamic world conquest that is underway right now and preserving Western civilization for ourselves, our children , and all the generations to come.
