Fails to deliver

There is so much to like in this cookbook! The concept of entire seasonal menus put together for you, with notes on each recipe about what can be done ahead and when, plus wine suggestions is brilliant, right? Everything is laid out for you, and the recipes are fun and adventuresome. Unfortunately, however, too many of Landis' recipes end up being much more time-consuming than she would have you believe. I cooked three of the full menus for guests, and each time found myself really stressed out--exactly contrary to the main premise of the book! I would add that I am a very experienced home cook; I can't imagine how this would go for a novice. In addition, there are more than a few things that sound good but aren't: take the deviled eggs with guacamole, for instance. The avocado turns grayish-green in this combination. You can imagine how unappetizing this looks. In sum, this is a book that I really wanted to like and which contains some individual "keeper" recipes. It is quite flawed, however, and ultimately disappoints.

Delectably Inspiring

Dinner parties are usually a lot of fun - for the guests. For the cook, however, entertaining can be a non-stop cook-a-thon with little time to socialize. New York Times recipe taster Denise Landis understand this. After all, she once ran into someone and didn't remember that the woman had been a guest in her home.

That's why Landis put together 40 menus, divided by seasons, for dinner parties of eight people. Filled with easy favorites like deviled eggs (made with guacamole) and baked apples (seasoned with Amaretto), "Dinner for Eight" will also tempt the more intrepid cook with dishes like Scotian Lobster Chowder and Lemon Ginger Crepes. Delectably inspiring. I only wish there were more photos.

Dr. Givens analyzes expressive shapes, colors, and markings encoded in arm wear, shoulder wear, leg wear, and shoes. He deciphers the background messages of spaces, places and interiors to learn how environs help or hinder in the meeting process. Chemical cues emanating from aromas, tastes, steroids, sterols, and hormones strongly shape a partner's feelings, so they are explored as well.

The book suggests ways to flirt, avoid mixed signals, read eyes, walk, dress, and lift a drink―to help you find a date, spark a relationship, and keep a mate. Knowing the hidden vocabulary of love signals will give you an edge. The more you know about these secret skills of attraction, the more likely you will find a loving, lasting partner.

David Givens, Ph.D., is the director of the Center for Nonverbal Studies in Spokane, Washington. He teaches Communication and Leadership in the graduate program of the School of Professional Studies at Gonzaga University. He is the author of Love Signals: A Practical Field Guide to the Body Language of Courtship, Crime Signals: How to Spot a Criminal Before You Become a Victim, and Your Body at Work: A Guide to Sight-reading the Body Language of Business, Bosses, and Boardrooms. How to find your love - and keep it

This book is a blend of three parts: 1 - research studies on the subject of human behaviour, especially applied to courtship and mating; 2 - direct, field observations by the author; 3 - how-to manual to find a partner (how to wear, how to behave, how to speak, how to move... and so on).

I'm fascinated by human behaviour, I read other books on the subject. Soon after the purchase, I quickly delved into it. Although some of the studies described here are already well-known, others aren't - that's why appreciate it.

Did you know that courtship has five phases? They are: «(1) Attention, (2) Recognition, (3) Speech, (4) Touching, and (5) Lovemaking. Each phase has its own signs, signals, and cues. Since potential mates `test' each other before uniting as one, courtship is rarely hurried. Moving too fast - giving too many signals at once or showing them out of phase order - may frighten a partner away. Universally, patience is the key».

This a practical book. What's written here is feasible by everyone.

Caveat: when I say that what's written here is feasible by everyone, I don't mean this is an easy book. Many people will understand this book, but not everybody will. In this book, the author talks human behaviour, neuroanathomy, ethnography, anthropology; you find here things such as `conjugate lateral eye movements', `isopraxism'... and so on.

I think to this book as an example of the cultural divide - if you understand (and apply the findings of) this book, you have a wide advantage over those who don't understand it: but that's another story...

I give it four stars instead of five because here and there there are less interesting parts, the quality and the insightfulness of the prose is not even. Sometimes it's a rather dull reading.

Now, a few quotations:

"In courtship, palm-up gestures are psychologically friendlier than palm-down cues. (...) Our closest animal relatives, the chimpanzees, greet each other with compliant, upturned palms to show `I'm friendly'. For human beings everywhere, gesturing with an upraised, opened palm is a convincing and time-tested way to say `Trust me; I mean no harm.' Throughout the world, palm-up cues captivate, charm, and psychologically disarm partners who may be unsure of each other's intentions."

"(...) before speaking to an unfamiliar man or woman you [should] establish a baseline of familiarity. This prepares the partner by laying psychological groundwork in which a new relationship can germinate. Before you ask the nice-looking Safeway clerk for a date, go through the clerk's checkout line to build familiarity. Establish eye contact, smile, bow your head forward, head-nod in agreement, and show an open palm. Three visits in as many days activate the familiarity effect. The odds that he or she will agree to take an espresso break with you dramatically improve. Repeated physical proximity over short periods of time converts you from `just a stranger' to someone who is better known and `liked'."

"Courtship works on a principle of luring. Instead of chasing, cornering, and capturing a mate, you emit `come hither' signals and await a response. You hold back initially and play what amounts to a waiting game, in which lure, not seize, is the rule."

I would absolutely recommend "Love Signals" to anyone who wishes to enjoy the intellectual discussion behind the science and psychology of attraction and/or for anyone who wishes to become better skilled at reading people's body language (as well as being aware of their own "signals" they are sending out).

As a professional matchmaker, I see that people who are cognizant of other people's "nonverbal" signals have a greater likelihood of success in dating and in their relationships. In this book, Givens provides valuable tips to his readers on how to recognize interest from members of the opposite sex (e.g. noticing that people lean towards whatever - or whomever - they find most important at the time, that people's eye blink more and tend to dilate when they are interested in someone, etc.) while also offering practical tips on how to "create" interest (e.g. how to use your voice, colors, etc. to create an attraction/send certain signals).

Occasionally, the read can be a little dry and - as one reviewer here comments - photo illustrations over drawings might have enhanced the book a little. Overall, however, I really enjoyed "Love Signals" and would highly recommend it.

Lisa Renee Pitts is a marvel! Her depiction of a large cast of characters is remarkable. She lends distinct, expressive voices to lifelong friends Carmen, Jewel, and Regina but saves her best efforts for minor characters. Randy the rapist bears a mocking tone, Jewel's mother a haughty one, and Jewel's father a world-weary, gravelly quality. Pitts's strong characterizations make it easy to relate to the protagonists' hopes and struggles. Her narration of the ups and downs of these women's lives is marred only by the frequent odd pauses in her reading. Still, listeners will find it difficult to turn off their CD players. BEAUTIFUL STORY OF FRIENDSHIP...........

This wonderful duo is back in a beautiful, captivating story of the love between three friends who love each other like sisters. Meeting in college, these three friends form a lifelong bond than can only be broken by one thing.

Carmen is somewhat of an outcast in college. With no parents and a homelife that is downright scary, Carmen exists on loans, jobs, and no sleep to make ends meet. When she arrives "home" one day and finds her brother gone and a notice of eviction at the apartment, she realizes her brother has been stealing her money. Carmen packs everything she owns--which isn't much--and vacates the only home she has ever known, finding herself with nowhere to go.

Jewell is a former childstar who has always had everything--or so everyone thinks. What she truly wants is to finally make her own decisions about her life and her career..and to be treated like a normal person. But despite everything, there is a hole in her life and her heart that she must come to terms with before her life can ever be complete. But she goes to college and meets.......

Regina, who is momentarily wowed by former child star Jewell, but realizes immediately that she wants only to be treated like everyone else. Concerned more with her social life than her grades, Regina has always felt like the black sheep of her family..a family whom to her seems disgustingly normal and boring. The two form a friendship, and soon decide to move off of the college campus into their own apartment.

In a chance meeting in the library elevator, the three come together. The elevator is momentarily stuck, allowing for more conversation than usual...and soon a friendship between the girls is born. A well written story!! This story had you guessing, trying to determine the "one" who didn't make it. This story also shows the type of life bonds you can develop with friends in college. It's an easy read and it kept my attention!!

LOVED IT LOVED IT

I really enjoyed this book, the characters felt like real people. I cared so much about them and I didn't want either one of them to die, I couldn't choose. I would have given the book a five star rating if it wasn't so long. I think a lot of things could have been taken out and it still would of had the same effect. Great Team of writers. I am the author of My Eyes Are Greenand I got a lot of inspiration from this book.

I absolutely love the hero of this series so anything would make ...

I absolutely love the hero of this series so anything would make me happy. This is the last, so far, book in the series. The author likes to blend in fact with his fiction but this time I didn't know any of the historical characters (unlike in the last book which featured JFK). I did learn something about WWII in the Pacific. The book did leave me with some unanswered questions about Josh's future.

Captain Josh Thurlow is back in a new World War II adventure, packed with action and pathos. Fans will remember the feisty U.S. Coast Guard Captain from two previous books. We first met Josh in THE KEEPER'S SON as he hunted a wolfpack of German U-boats off the Outer Banks of the Carolinas before the U.S. entered the war. In THE AMBASSADOR'S SON, Josh and his crew were sent to the Solomon Islands on a secret mission to search for President Roosevelt's missing cousin early in the war.

Captain Thurlow's sea-savvy has been duly noted by Washington after his action in the Solomons, and he is dispatched to the Mariana Islands as an observer for Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox. The Americans had met blistering resistance from the Japanese in the bloody battle of Guadalcanal, and now the U.S. seeks to secure the island chain to the east as a strategic stopping point in the supply lines as they gear up for invasion of Japan. Late in 1943 the Marines are launching an assault of Tarawa.

Hickam's earlier war stories have leaned toward storytelling and character development in the early pages. Not so in THE FAR REACHES. The opening chapters are filled with graphic, action-filled battle scenes, as his impressive writing skills chronicle a near-catastrophic battle early in World War II. Based on recorded history of that battle, THE FAR REACHES aims a zoom lens on the fighting men from both sides in what began as a fiasco as the Marines tried to land under poor sea conditions. It is here that Hickam injects his rich and colorful characters into the story.

Captain Thurlow, horrified at the carnage taking place during the misguided landing, discards his observer role to jump ship and join the battle.

Meanwhile, Sister Mary Kathleen, a pretty, young Irish nun and her retinue of "fella boys," a group of South Sea Islanders fleeing a prisoner-of-war camp on a Japanese occupied island, have had the misfortune of being recaptured by the Japanese holding Tarawa. They are sequestered in a bunker under guard beneath the dunes of the small atoll and due to be executed. When the pounding begins from the American warships offshore, their future is even less certain as shells fall on the bunker.

During a lull in the bombardment, the nun and her fella boys crawl out of the smoldering ruins to give aid to the few wounded Marines still alive after the first unsuccessful beach assault. Among them are Josh and his bosun, Ready. Josh, gravely wounded during the landing, succumbs to a recurrence of malaria and is shanghaied by Sister Mary Kathleen, who has a war of her own to win back on the island she fled.

As the second wave of the 2nd Marines is gathering for what will be a successful battle for the island chain, the unconscious Josh, his bosun Ready, the determined young nun and three surviving Marines are being rowed in three reed outrigger canoes by the nun's faithful fella boys back to the island group known as the Forriges, or the Far Reaches, to help Sister Mary Kathleen exact her revenge on her brutal captor.

Members of the crew find love, honor and insights into their own human spirit as they go from hand-to-hand fighting on the brutal beaches of Tarawa to an idyllic existence on an outlying island. There, they finally confront the cruel Japanese warlord and the lives of each are changed forever.

Hickam's hero is strong, filled with zeal and brave in the face of overwhelming odds as all heroes must be. His past books have been laced with humor and hijnks by Josh and his unlikely band of sailors, but THE FAR REACHES is dead serious and strikes a darker note. The war has hardened Josh and the games are over. The curmudgeonly Captain frightens strangers but doesn't fool his trusted friends. His tough crust still surrounds a tender core for the men and women who are loyal and true.

Doctors in several cities did what they could to prevent infection, but all advised her father to take her home and pray for a quick death. Going against tradition, where it would be normal for a father to let his female child die, he prayed not for her death, but for a miracle. His search for better care was rewarded when an American soldier, going against orders, brought Zubaida into the military health-care system. She was transported to the United States, where she spent a year without her family, receiving a series of surgeries designed to restore her terribly disfigured face and body. This is a gripping account from the first few pages, and it never lets go. As readers follow Zubaida's journey, they learn much about the Afghan way of life. Bravely disregarding his orders, an American soldier took the girl to the U.S. medics, a selfless gesture that led to her being flown to Los Angeles, where she underwent lengthy reconstructive surgeries. The girl who would have died became, through the kindnesses of many strangers, a beautiful young woman. Although this book is ostensibly about Zubaida, it is most interesting and affecting when Flacco writes about the girl's benefactors, the men and women who put aside personal concerns for someone they barely knew. The topic could easily have generated a book maudlin in the extreme, but the author reins in the sap. Any emotional response from the reader is honestly earned, the product of a genuinely moving story. Similarly, the events of September 11, 2001, play a role in the book, but the author doesn't let that larger context overshadow the small, personal story he is telling. Zubaida already has received plenty of newspaper coverage, so expect some demand for a book-length version of her story. David Pitt

The possibility of Spirit

Tiny Dancer is one of the most engrossing stories of human spirit I have ever read. Absolutely a riveting book I couldn't put down. No wonder the girl's father-and the American soldiers in Afghanistan-refused to give in to this tragedy. But it is Zubaida's unending resolve to her own life that is so unbelievable. Flacco's narrative is deep, steady, intelligent, and resonant. I was hooked immediately. His ability for process and critical thinking is sometimes what our culture lacks, and so useful in the telling of this story that involved the mixing of two radically different worlds. This book-and the Grossman's heroic efforts to save this child-made me proud to be American in the truest sense.

Just bought a second copy!

This is such an incredible story, so inspiring, that I gave away my copy of the book to a friend and bought another for me. I may have to pass this on and just keep buying the book. Not only is it a good story to begin with, but I like the way author Flacco tells the story. As I write this, we are staying with friends in San Antonio, Texas...after evacuating from Houston for hurricane Rita. Our home is on the water and may now exist after tomorrow. Hard to get too upset over that once you know Zubaida's story...

A story we need hear!

Even though the cover reveals a happy ending, the story grips you and makes you want to turn every page as if the act itself gives you the power to heal. Tiny Dancer is part history lesson, part cultural lesson, amd more importantly, a positive example of humanity and it's potential for goodness--something we need right now.

It was recommneded to me, I purchased it, had some free time and couldn't put it down.

An Urban 21st Century Romeo and Juliet

Jones leaves you breathless in this tale of forbidden love, murder, and mayhem. He produces a plot that's thicker than split pea soup with the young love between Jamal and Keisha. He teaches us what it means to grow up as a preacher's kid, serve as a first lady of the church, and the great expectations that come along with them. We also learn that a man of the cloth's faith is tested when faced with family challenges and adversity. This book is a must-read for anyone who bears any of these titles or who seeks knowledge on what they go through. It is also good for parents and teens who struggle with similar issues in their own families.

Is You With Me?

Ride or Die: You either ride with me or die trying. That is Keisha Anderson and Jamal Nichol's motto. She is a PK - preacher's kid -- and he is a drug lord's son. They met years ago when they were pre-teens and experienced puppy love, now they are experimenting with the real thing - true love. Their fathers, John Anderson and Frank Nichols were friends, in fact they were even like brothers, but something happened. Something drove a wedge between them and they have spent the past umpteen years in rivalry.

Someone attempts to rape Keisha and her knight in shining armor, Jamal, saves the day. She tells her father about the incident and he becomes livid. The same evening, an attempt is made on John's life, but someone else dies, and he believes Frank has something to do with both incidents and stages a protest outside of his bar. The protest turns violent when a stray bullet, intended for John, hits the police commissioner and kills him. Not to mention, Keisha is kidnapped. Someone has to pay and Jamal is the chosen fall guy.

Detective Kevin Lynch is back; he was first introduced in The Bridge. His job is to solve the homicide of the police commissioner and other crimes which occurred as a domino effect of the protest. Jamal is running for his innocence and Keisha is with him. The question is: was she really kidnapped or is she a willing participant? In the midst of all the chaos, family secrets are unveiled. The saints are more like devils in sheep's clothing.

Jones gives you high speed chases, carjackings, shooting sprees and all the while, makes you feel as though you're front and center for each of the crimes, with his elaborate details. That man can tell a story and always amazes you with an "Aww hell naw" ending. But I must admit, unlike the other two novels, I figured this one out. That won't guarantee the next reader will. Ride or Die is drama/mystery/romance at its best. Okay, what's next Jones? Bring it on `cause I'm aching for another good read.

Running For Her Life

Check any bookstore and you will find street literature is a large part of the African American book section; there is something for everyone. In my opinion Solomon Jones is one of the best in this genre. In his novels, it's not all about the street actions, there is a purpose behind the madness. In Ride or Die, the young and pretty preacher's kid, Keisha, should be enjoying life, yet she is running for her life.

Keisha Anderson is the daughter of the Reverend Anderson, a prominent pastor in the city of Philadelphia. Jamal Nichols is the son of Frank Nichols, the drug lord of the neighborhood. Jamal and Keisha are in love; however, their fathers Reverend Anderson and Frank Nichols have a history that should make their children stay far away from each other. After Keisha is attacked on her way to church, Rev. Anderson confronts Frank and is determined to bring him down. During an early morning demonstration called by the Reverend. in front of one of Frank`s establishments, the Police Commissioner is shot and killed. The confusion afterwards gives Jamal and Keisha a chance to run away and be together. On the run, they become aware that someone fitting Jamal's description is wanted for killing the commissioner.

This is an exciting fast paced novel in which most of the events happens within a 24-hour span. If you read Jones' previous novel, The Bridge, you will remember Detective Lynch; he is back as the lead detective trying to solve this difficult case. Even though this is classified as urban fiction, a novel about the streets, Jones does a very good job exploring why Keisha is so willing to turn from good girl to bad girl, why Frank and the Reverend hate each other and how the Reverend and his wife are living two lives, one for church and another for home. The profile of the Anderson family is superb; the graphic details are vivid; the ending profound. This is a very good read.

For a super quick appetizer, Esposito stuffs dates with Parmesan cheese and nuts. Frozen prepared puff pastry makes possible tartlets filled with cheese and bits of ham. A host of pasta dishes can all be prepared very quickly. Bucatini all'Amatriciana needs only a few minutes on the stove, and any pasta with pesto needs no cooking save for the pasta itself. Esposito even constructs a speedy "lazy lasagna" using no-boil noodles. Quickly sauteed fish pick up flavor and texture from cheese and almond coating. Neapolitan Potato Pie moves quickly to table if one has some leftover mashed potatoes on hand. Store-bought bread dough makes short work of both pizzas and calzones. A food processor expedites anise cookies for a homemade dessert. Spoiled by Cooking Magazines?

I subscribe to a few cooking magazines...and very much look forward to curling up on the couch and browsing for new recipe ideas. I have a dear friend who is an accomplished cook and loves authentic Italian food. After her husband was in a tragic accident, I purchsed this book in hopes of finding ideas for easy italian meals that I could bring to her family. But, I guess I just took for granted that this cookbook would live up to its name. I saw the television show, and they made it look so easy! It would help a lot if there were pictures in the book to give you some idea of what the final product should look like. The meals are neither quick, nor easy. I was very disappointed in this purchase. This book will not last long in my kitchen. Sorry!

More confusing than inspiring

"Ciao Italia Pronto!" is a better cookbook in theory than in practice.

Italian food? Check! Thirty minute meals? Check! Sounds like just the thing to make a nice meal and still have some time between getting home from work and bedtime. That would be a false assumption.

American kitchens are certainly more sophisticated since the days when Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee owned the Italian cooking franchise. However, many of the ingredients called for in these recipes are still on the exotic side in my corner grocery. Sure, we have farmers markets, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, even an Italian specialty market or two but, if I have to fight traffic gridlock after work to go destination shopping for ingredients, it defeats the purpose of the Thirty Minute meal. The author recognizes this problem and provides a four page directory of mail order houses to obtain some of the required ingredients. This immediately makes about 40 percent of these recipes more trouble than they're worth.

If you do manage to find the ingredients, know that these recipes are neither simple, nor fast.

The recipe for "Lazy Lasagne" requires eight ingredients, and bakes for 30-35 minutes. That's cooking time only, and does NOT include prep time. Oh, and the tomato sauce for the lasagne is a recipe on a separate page. The sauce requires an additional eight ingredients and 20 minutes of cooking time.

Another main dish, "Fresh Tuna with Artichoke, Capers and Chickpeas," requires 12 ingredient and we're advised to make it early in the day, or a day ahead.

Some of the dishes are unfamiliar and pictures of the prepared food would have been a big help. There are only eight full page color pictures located in the center of the book, one appetizer, one soup, two main dishes, two salads, and two desserts.

If you're interested in this book for quick, convenient recipes, look elsewhere. This is far more complicated and time consuming than the advertised "....30 Minute Recipes from an Italian Kitchen." Not recommended.

easy Italian food

I have seen many Ciao Italia shows with Mary Ann and her love of food and easy steps can make anyone an Italian cook. All her books are well written and easy to follow, so enjoy!
