First Blue: The Story of World War II Ace Butch Voris and the Creation of the Blue Angels, by Robert K. Wilcox

The Remarkable Story of a True Hero of American Aviation

The U.S. Navy's Blue Angels are the most famous flight demonstration team in the world. While millions of aviation enthusiasts see their shows every year, the story of the man who formed the squadron has never been told. He is Roy Marlin "Butch" Voris, a World War II Ace and one of only two aviators ever to command the Blue Angels twice.

First Blue details the epic journey of an unassuming man whose strong character and desire to fly launched him into a life of drama, heroism, and accomplishment unique in his field. Because he wanted to serve his country during World War II, a young Butch Voris found himself flying fighter planes as part of the pitifully prepared and outmanned front in the early stages of the Pacific theater. He was nearly killed there but went on to be a leader in one of the most fearsome naval air squadrons in the Pacific. As a pilot, Butch is unquestionably in the same class as more recognized aviator heroes such as Chuck Yeager and Pappy Boyington.

While his World War II experience alone could comprise a book, Butch may be best known for his efforts in the creation of the naval air demonstration team, the Blue Angels. After the war, Voris was personally chosen by Admiral Nimitz to start the Blue Angels and to lead them, first in prop planes and later in jets. The story of his efforts is as exciting as it is inspirational, and it's told here in meticulous detail and with great humor. Today the Blue Angels still follow traditions established by Butch.

Butch's involvement in military flight didn't end with the Blue Angels; he became a major player in the development of the F-14 Tomcat and NASA's Lunar Explorer Module for Grumman. Butch dedicated his life to his work, and here, finally, is the remarkable, untold account of this true American aviation pioneer and hero: a man whose life had unparalleled influence on naval aviation and whose legacy continues to inspire millions of Americans each year.

From Publishers Weekly
Opening with a graphic account of a mid-air collision, this bio of Voris, who founded the Navy’s famed aerial acrobatic team, gets the job done, but without the group’s pluck and aplomb. Before the founding, Voris flew two combat tours as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific, from 1942 to 1944. Among the numerous descriptions of his wartime experiences, the book includes accounts of his first landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier, his first aerial combat and his participation in the aerial melee known as "The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot"—in which 300 hundred Japanese planes were shot down. Wilcox (Black Aces High) presents vivid interviews with Voris himself about this period ("This voice... came on the radio and said ‘Shut up and die like a man.’ ...That’s the kind of attitude people had... Shut up. We got our own fight to deal with..."). In April 1946, Voris was tapped, as part of a Navy postwar public relations campaign, to form the Navy’s flight exhibition team—The Blue Angels. A landing gear collapse upon landing, the use of a captured Japanese Zero fighter for simulated aerial dogfights, and the death of one of his wartime comrades who crashed into the ground during air show acrobatics are all covered, along with the recruitment and the development of acrobatic maneuvers. Relinquishing command of the Blue Angels in 1947, Voris did stints in Korea, with the re-formed Angels, and later worked for Grumman and NASA. His mid-century pilot’s life comes through loud and clear here, as does the Navy’s internal workings—and those marvelous planes.

From Booklist
Ray Marlin "Butch" Voris joined the U. S. Navy during preparations for World War II. He became a fighter pilot who fought in three campaigns and ended as an ace with eight kills. After the war, when Admiral Nimitz proposed the precision flying team that became the Blue Angels, Voris served twice as its leader. During the second stint, which followed a tour of duty in Korea, he survived a disastrous midair collision to retire as a captain. His service to his country wasn't over, however, for he went to work for Grumman aircraft on the development of the F-14 Tomcat and the lunar lander, and his career ended at NASA. Wilcox is a master of aviation history, research, and the declarative sentence. Employing those attainments, he has produced a solid, readable biography of an outstanding member of the group of junior officers who were on WWII's front lines and gave further service after the war without receiving the honors they deserved. In the case of Butch Voris, consider that lack remedied. Roland Green

The First Blue Angel
By nofty
The Navy's Blue Angels are ambassadors of American ingenuity, prowess and accomplishment in the air. They are the premiere flight demonstration team in the world and proud symbol of not only Naval Aviation, but the entire US Navy. Their aerial acrobatics thrill million of spectators every year. Their show is always a major highlight of Commissioning Week at Annapolis. Nobody knows reliably how many people were influenced to join the Navy by the Blue Angels, but it is a considerable number.

How did they start? How have they endured for 58 years since their founding in 1946? What basic tenets underpin their success?

This, and much more, is the subject of a new book, "First Blue: The Story of World War II Ace Butch Voris and the Creation of the Blue Angels" by Bob Wilcox. This Book should appeal to anyone who has felt the thrill of aviation in their veins while watching a Blue Angels air show. It should also appeal to a broader audience. With a great story to tell, Wilcox has crafted a stirring naval action narrative that often reads like an adventure novel-covering Voris' entire life. The story ranges from heroic, tragic, humorous to absurd, but is always spellbinding.

Today Butch Voris is one of approximately 70 inductees in the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor in Pensacola, Fl. When he was selected to start the Navy Flight Demonstration Team, he was only a 26 year old, Pacific veteran and ace, a fighter pilot passing along the hard lessons learned in WWII by teaching tactics at NAS Jacksonville. With the war over, the Navy, worried about recruitment, decided they needed something special to attract positive attention for recruiting purposes.

The years before the war had seen military flight demonstration teams come and go. There was trepidation about starting another because the nation was reaping a peace dividend and Congress might see an air show enterprise as superfluous. The Navy decided to go ahead anyway. Voris was told to take his startup practices out over the Everglades so that if there were any crashes, only the alligators would know. Resources were initially limited to those on hand in the training command.

What magic has carried the Blue Angels from these humble beginnings to world renown? How did a newly minted LCDR, a product of the NavCad Program, with only two years of college education, come to be selected as the first leader of the Blues.? "First Blue" succinctly covers the events that shaped Voris in the crucible of the Pacific War and prepared him, after little more than five years Navy service, to create the Blue Angels and the Blue Angel culture of success.

After seeing a naval aviation recruiting poster, he started his career in early 1941. By fall 1942, he was on the Enterprise in some of the darkest days of the Pacific War. He participated in several of the Naval Actions in the Battle for Guadalcanal. Voris also flew to Guadacanal, became part of the vaunted "Cactus Air Force," shot down his first Japanese Zero, was in turn shot down, nearly dying in the process.

But he survived and came back for a second cruise with Hornet and the fast carriers in 1944 as they hit Tarawa, Guam, Iwo Jima, Chi Chi Jima and other islands through the Central and North Pacific. He was involved in several key battles like the Battle of the Philipine Sea including key subplots the Marianas "Turkey Shoot" and the "Mission into Darkness." He is credited with eight air to air victories over Zeros during two tours along with some amazing flying feats like participating in the Navy's first night fighter squardron.

Through this intense combat, he got to work for and with some of the finest leaders the US Navy has ever produced. O'Hare, Flately, Dean, Clark, and Thatch to name a few. This on the job training, coupled with a solid family upbringing, provided a lifetime of leadership training. This proved to be invaluable, along with Voris' passion for perfection and amazing flying skills, in forming the Blues.

Applying these basic tenets of leadership and organizational development almost by instinct, Voris created an organization that is an extension of the Navy's finest WWII aviation leaders, with the excellence and momentum to sustain, adapt and improve over time. Teamwork; competitive spirit; demanding and accepting only the best from personnel and equipment; striving for perfection with true dedication and a real sense of urgency ; learning from every show, practice and team member; never being satisfied: and perhaps most important, leading by example from the front, but with a sense of confident, humbleness. The Blue Angels represent the best the Navy has to offer. Voris planned it that way. "First Blue" tells this definitive Blue Angel story well.

Big Muddy Blues: True Tales and Twisted Politics Along Lewis and Clark's Missouri River, by Bill Lambrecht

America's Missouri River may be the nation's longest and most historically significant river, encompassing many of America's natural wonders between Missouri and Montana, draining almost 600,000 square miles in ten states and part of Canada, and, after Lewis and Clark's expedition 200 years ago, opening the West to a frenzied rush of expansion.

But the Missouri is also the site of a vast, politically driven drama. It tops a list of emerging big-stakes river wars around the country that pit conservation, development, farm, barge, American Indian, and government interests against one another in clashes made even more complicated by the scarcity of water in many river basin states.

In Big Muddy Blues, veteran journalist Bill Lambrecht uses the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's epic adventure west as a lens to show the other side of the story: what's been lost over 200 years. And the losses, on top of the 120 miles cut off the river by Army Corps stabilization efforts, aren't slight. Dependent on every word uttered in courtrooms and legislatures for their futures are more than 80 rare and endangered species, the family farms that require a stabilized river, the barges of shippers that require a heavier flow, and dozens if not hundreds of sacred Native American burial grounds.

Running through it all is the water-more than 2,300 miles of it-that slakes the thirst of people in one-sixth of the nation and has, in the last few hundred years, been home to Native Americans, explorers, and settlers; river pirates, shipwrecks, and steamboats; and farmers, conservationists, and the Army. This is the story of "Big Muddy," of its influence on the formation and stability of our nation and of its place in the center of an escalating river war that will set the stage for water wars in the decades to come.

From Publishers Weekly
While the Missouri is not as muddy as it was before it was dammed, straightened, channelized and turned into what environmentalists call the world's biggest barge ditch, the political wranglings surrounding it are murky indeed. Journalist Lambrecht (Dinner at the New Gene Cafe) deftly untangles the confrontation between an alliance of farmers, barge operators and real estate developers who want the river managed for industrial convenience, and environmentalists and recreation and tourist interests who want to restore some of its meanderings and seasonal flows and revive floodplain ecosystems. The controversy also pits the Army Corps of Engineers, custodian of dams and canals, against the Fish and Wildlife Service, guardian of endangered species. Meanwhile, the upriver Dakotans and downriver Missourians squabble over divvying up the river's waters. Lambrecht tells the story through vivid, evenhanded profiles of the individuals—farmers, resort owners, biologists, tribal leaders, politicians—caught up in it, while chronicling the battle over the river's fate from the flood-control projects of the 1930s to the congressional and court battles of recent years. Along the way, he sprinkles in engaging sidebars on Missouri river lore and legend. The result is a probing, highly readable account of "an enslaved river impatient to be free." Photos. (Apr.)

Intrepid journalist Lambrecht marks the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition along the Missouri River, America's longest, by conducting his own exploratory river journey. Once the lifeblood for countless species of wildlife, and sacred to numerous American Indian tribes, the meandering Big Muddy was viewed as "malevolent" and "marauding" by the settlers who followed Lewis and Clark, and was consequently sentenced to "dam-nation." Over the course of a century, the Army Corps of Engineers met the demand for barge navigation, flood control, and jobs with humongous, often ill-advised projects that channeled the Missouri, flooding Indian lands and endangering bird and fish species. Over the years, farmers, bargers, recreationists, environmentalists, and Indian tribes have all argued, often in court, for and against restoring the Missouri's natural flow as invasive species flourish and conflicts over water, burial grounds, and wildlife preservation escalate. The author of Dinner at the New Gene Cafe (2001), Lambrecht skillfully, even wittily, profiles various river champions, elucidates complicated biological, social, and political matters, and illuminates tragic and ludicrous failures of judgment and compassion in a balanced, often shocking, always compelling inquiry. From the Inside Flap
"In the spirit of Lewis and Clark, Bill Lambrecht has undertaken his own voyage of discovery to provide a much-needed update on the fate of the big river that flows through the heart of America. Filled with stories of memorable people, endangered species, betrayed Indian tribes, and high-stakes political intrigue, Big Muddy Blues is precisely the kind of book Thomas Jefferson himself would have wanted for his library at Monticello."

Pleasantly surprised!
By K.C.Saff
When I picked up this book on Missouri River politics I hardly expected it to be so engrossing! The author is a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and he recounts here some of the stories he collected that were too in depth for that publication. He writes in a journalistic style; focusing on interviews he lets the voices of people affected by river management carry the book. In sidebars after almost every chapter he presents well-chosen histories not directly related to the politics that add a great deal to the main text.

I learned a great deal about the Missouri River from this book, from its recreational opportunities to its commercial usage. I did not know the government was still taking so much land from the natives so far into the twentieth century; it is hard to imagine that so many people could lose their way of life at the signing of a pen. If the book has any weakness, it is that the interviews necessarily focus on people whose needs are not being met by the politics, so it is something of a downer. Still, it well communicates a love of the river and the history of man's intervention to change it.

Is Lambrecht Speaking Only of the Missouri?
By M. Miller
In "Big Muddy Blues", Bill Lambrecht has woven intriguing, though somewhat unsettling, tales of one of our most precious resources - water. Specifically he speaks of the Missouri River, but I found myself drawing correlations to other bodies of water dotting our country. If man's need for control has so skewed the patterns of the Missouri, how many other rivers, streams, lakes and bays have suffered the same fate - and with what result? Asking questions of various individuals and groups whose livelihoods are intertwined with the Missouri, Lambrecht presents their answers, but allows the reader to draw conclusions.

Disjointed though the writing style appears from time to time, there is a pattern. Lambrecht's tales, of politics and special interest groups, take the reader back and forth through the life of the Missouri - from the days of Lewis and Clark to the present.

I praise Lambrecht for raising awareness, of the great Missouri River itself as well as of the politics and factions that are affecting our water resources and environments that rely upon them.

A Must Read for Anyone Along the Missouri River
By Marsha Clark
This book has it all: exquisite text, well-researched material, interesting format, a "plot" with as many twists and turns as the river itself, and an ability to haunt the reader long after the book is done. Lambrecht's book reveals the history of 20th century activities along the Missouri that is seldom (if ever) taught in our schools. From industrious ambitions, the battles over water, and an account of the indigenous tribes who have lost their culture to Western ways of industry, Big Muddy Blues also presents a hope of reclaiming the wild nature of the Missouri River. The author guides the reader along a closer examination into ways public policy, administration and private interests prioritize the work of government agencies. Lambrecht--the Washington DC Bureau Chief for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch-- travelled the River and talked with people affected by it, now and in the past. Anyone interested in the interplay among government bodies, grassroots efforts, concerned individual action and politics in general will love this book. Readers of nonfiction will appreciate the engaging manner the material is presented. People living in states that border the Missouri River or have water supplies and wildlife affected by it should add this to their reading list... sooner rather than later. One of the best books I've read in a long time. Big Muddy Blues is a gift to citizens, government agency administrators and law-makers everywhere.

The Bitch Posse, by Martha O'Connor

These are the confessions of the Bitch Posse. Cherry, Rennie, and Amy were outcasts, rebels, and dreamers. And their friendship was so all-encompassing that some would call it dangerous. This is the story of three women-as seniors in high school and as women in their mid-thirties---who formed a bond in order to survive the pitfalls and perils of their lives. In the present day, one of them is a wife and mother-to-be, trying to live a "normal" life. One of them is a writer who engages in a number of self-destructive relationships. And one of them is in a mental hospital---and has been ever since that one fateful night fifteen years ago, when a heart-wrenching betrayal and the unraveling of relationships led them to a point of no return, where their actions triggered unimaginable consequences. These secrets have torn them apart while inextricably binding them to one another. What happened to them? And can they survive their shared history, even today?

The Bitch Posse is an anthem for friendships that defy society's approval or disapproval. It's a novel of secrets, courage, sacrifice, and hope against the odds. It is both a journey back to being a girl on the verge of adulthood, and a journey forward, showing how the events of our past can unearth the best in us today.

Dare to jump in.

"The Bitch Posse is a riveting and emotionally charged read. No fluff here."

From Publishers Weekly
"You Have Now Entered a Chick-Lit-Free Zone," O'Connor's dark, scabrous debut warns. Given the sassy title and the familiar subject matter of female friendship, readers should be forgiven if they expect Bridget Jones—but O'Conner's heroines resemble that lovable Brit like leopards resemble kittens. The story focuses on three friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, as high school seniors and as women in their mid-30s. Compelled by miserable home lives to form the Bitch Posse as teenagers, the three girls ricochet dangerously through their last year of high school, sharing a passionate, almost sinister bond until a terrible secret rips them apart. Still damaged—and separated—by the unspeakable event, the three live equally wretched lives as adults, Cherry in a mental institution, Rennie as a promiscuous failed writer and Amy in a loveless marriage. After pages of vodka, cocaine, "fucking" and "cutting" (in both past and present narratives), the friends' terrible secret finally comes to light, though it reveals logistical and thematic gaps in the narrative. "[H]er past is like a sore that won't ever heal, memories are spurting at her like blood and she can't close the wound" characterizes the level of emotional complexity attained in this heavy-handed novel, but the story fascinates even as it repels. From the Inside Flap
Extraordinary Praise for Martha O'Connor

"The Bitch Posse is dark, poignant, and only too believable. Renny, Cherry, and Amy are strivers at school by day and connivers by night. Self-styled rebels without a clue, they are bound together in friendship. Little do they realize that there will come a day when their naive passions will lead them to a vicious mishap, blood that will stay on their hands for the rest of their lives. This is a book that will walk alongside you, and haunt your dreams, long after you turn the last page."---Jacquelyn Mitchard, New York Times bestselling author of The Deep End of the Ocean and A Theory of Relativity

"The fierce young heroines of Martha O'Connor's uncompromising novel team up in high school and head out into the night to raise hell---not knowing, of course, the infernal depths to which their anger and pain can take them. From the first the story of Renny, Cherry, and Amy is eye-popping: a profane and unabashed account of a girls' pact to get out of the Midwest and get even with the small-town toss of the dice that's doomed them. Told in dramatic flash-like chapters, skimming back and forth through time, and allowing raw emotion to be its nerve-addled guide, The Bitch Posse is a debut worthy of Joyce Carol Oates. That is, O'Connor steals into Oates's bleak, erotically desolate territory by night to explore the pathology of adolescent loneliness and longing, along the way making full-fledged women of this compellingly capricious sister act. And in the end, it's lit---just so---by the glow of the dying fires of youth, and bitter with the taste of the aftermath ashes of a hard-won yet oddly hopeful wisdom."---Edmund White, author of Fanny: A Fiction

"This is a novel that gets under the skin, a novel that cuts deep. Martha O'Connor has crafted a trio of unforgettable characters, young women so heart-wrenchingly alive, they burst from the page. The Bitch Posse has all the makings of a modern-day classic; it left me shaken, moved, and deeply grateful for the journey."---Gayle Brandeis, author of The Book of Dead Birds and winner of the Bellwether Prize for Fiction

"A nuanced and often disturbing consideration of the assets and liabilities of friendship and loyalty. Very brave mother-daughter book groups will do well to choose this novel!" -Katharine Weber, author of Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear, The Music Lesson, and The Little Women

"Every once in a while a book comes along that speaks the truth so intensely that it's a bit like ambulance chasing: You want to look away but simply can't. In this era of Prada-obsessed chick-lit heroines and Machiavellian Mean Girls, the young women in The Bitch Posse are complex Every Girls---precocious but confused, wry but sad, rebellious but stability-seeking, insecure yet powerful. An exquisitely observant portrait of three very different best friends whose lives change forever on a fateful night in high school, The Bitch Posse is one of the saddest, funniest, and most original stories about deep emotional connections and the forces that threaten to unravel them."---Lori Gottlieb, author of Stick Figure: A Diary of My Former Self

Bitch Posse

Powerful
By Mark Vender
I picked up The Bitch Posse on Saturday afternoon and spent the rest of the weekend guiltily hiding in bed until I finished it. Right from the beginning I found myself immersed in the world of Amy, Rennie and Cherry and could not stop reading. And while normally I tend to associate accelerated page turning with airport novels, this is nothing of the sort. The Bitch Posse oozes darkness, danger, blood and sex and it is as troubling as it is thrilling. O'Connor shifts between the three protagonists and between past and present seamlessly, and crafts a satisfying resolution that didn't leave a saccharine taste in my mouth. Welcome proof that writers can gag and bind readers to the page without sacrificing the quality of the writing.

Highly recommended.

Trying too hard not to be "chick lit"
By M. Sonkin
Just plain ugly. The author is so determined to write a book about women without being considered "chick lit" that she set out to alienate most women who are intelligent enough to read--and men too, I am sure. Who wants to read about these disgusting, disturbed characters? Who cares about their dark, twisted world? Is there a point?

From Publishers Weekly
Turner (These Is My Words) resumes the fictionalized diary of her great-grandmother, Arizona frontierswoman Sarah Agnes Prine, four years later in this day-by-day account of seven months in which the indomitable, twice-widowed rancher faces drought, prairie fire, a stampede, a hanging and a proposal. Sarah fears losing her ranch: "I need money and I need rain. Both of them in good order and flowing over." Even help brings worry: Sarah's prosperous neighbor offers sympathy and marriage; sons Gilbert and Charlie return home, defying their mother's wish that they complete their education; Sarah's mother sells land to hire a water witch with spiritual gifts and frightening proclivities; visiting nephew Willie runs away with Sarah's savings. Sarah goes to San Francisco, where her brother has lost everything in the 1906 earthquake, and Gil and Charlie ride south in search of Willie. Not all the news is bad, though. A new neighbor proves a good friend and promises to be more, while his son champions Sarah through legal challenges to her land. Older, tougher, wiser, Sarah enchants with her plainspoken energy and honesty. The title may suggest a gentle tale of domestic comfort, but the book is as straightforward, gritty and persistent as the woman who inspires it and as memorable as the landscape where she carves out her life.

From Booklist
The sequel to the widely applauded These Is My Words (1998) continues the previous novel's story line based on the life and adventures of the author's great-grandmother. It is set in the Arizona Territory and is as robust, authentic, and exciting as its predecessor. Sarah's tale follows the challenges, setbacks, and successes she faces from her particular vantage point on the frontier from spring to winter in the year 1906. At this point, Sarah is a widow with grown sons who still live with her on her cattle ranch, and with her brother and sister-in-law and mother all living close by, she enjoys the precious support of family. In fact, the primacy of family is the novel's major theme as Sarah negotiates a path full of physical hardships, including a drought threatening her ranch's very existence. With a highly dramatic narrative, the novel nevertheless achieves its fullest effect as a character study. Told in Sarah's charming voice, a vividly conjured picture of her place and time. a truly satisfying sequel
By Lexi Andreas
I approached Sarah's Quilt with some hesitation as so often sequels just don't live up to the anticipation of the first book's enjoyment. Sarah's Quilt, however, did not disappoint. The characters of the story are so fleshed out in such subtle ways, I feel as if I have come to know and love these people. The plot is, like life itself, a bit disjointed, and takes a while to get started. Certain matters occupy Sarah's mind more than others at times, but all the storylines ultimately are resolved.

I think this book had particular meaning for me because my second son recently left home for college. With two children away, and only one left at home, I felt many of Sarah's difficulties in how to resolve being a good mother to "children" who are growing up so fast, how to care for an older mother, and questions where life is heading. I am not sure if I had read this novel when I was younger (and by "younger" I mean ten years ago) if it would have had the same impact for me. It was comforting to know that the concerns of a pioneer woman over one hundred years ago can still resonate with a middle-aged woman in 2007.

Read this book if you like historical American fiction, especially involving a strong, independent woman as main character. Also, if you like reading stories where hearth and home are considered something worth fighting for.

Sarah's Saga
By Sharon Knutson
Sarah's Quilt is the sequel to These Is My Words. It is 1906, Sarah's children are grown, and her ranch is gripped tightly in the 3rd year of a fierce drought. Charlie and Gil arrive home at the ranch after dropping out of college. To Sarah, an education is worth more than gold and she can't understand why they would rather work the ranch than sit in a class room and learn.

Sarah's well runs dry and things are looking very grim for the survival of her cattle when her mother announces she paid a water witch to come find a new well. Lazarus arrives on a white mule, spouting Biblical verses and sparking fear in Sarah...but he delivered and water is found...but instead of easing the struggle from the drought, more problems arise and this is only the beginning of Sarah's struggles...she faces trials that would break most people...deaths, betrayal, forces of nature that rip away at her iron will. Sarah's nephew arrives unannounced one day demanding to become a cowboy. Willie is the son of her brother Ernest and a "slatternly" woman he married, Lulu. But Willie is family and Sarah takes him in. Little does she know the pain Willie has buried so deep inside him and the tragic consequences that erupt when that pain surfaces.

The story is filled with the gritty reality of ranching in Arizona in the early 1900's. The backbone of the story is as strong as Sarah herself. This book is a fast read, filled with tension and harsh emotions...I pushed myself to finish it late in the night, because I simply couldn't put it down without knowing how Sarah would come out. I wasn't disappointed. This is a great adventure.

Good follow up
By Mrs. Spumoni
This is a good book and on some levels I'd happily give it five stars... but maybe comparing it to "These is my words" I liked it but it didn't strike me the same way. I wish there was a 4.5 star rating...

I don't know, there was just something bout "These is my words" that really struck me. It was one of my favorite books I'd read in years.

It is nice to have a sequel, and this is a really good book, and I liked hearing the next chapter in the story. It's a great story, a great cast of characters...

Maybe nothing could match 'Words' but that might all be in my head.

The Bridge of Sighs: A Novel (Yalta Boulevard Quintet), by Olen Steinhauer

In this auspicious literary crime debut, an inexperienced homicide detective struggles amid the lawlessness of a post-WWII Eastern European city.

It's August, 1948, three years after the Russians "liberated" this small nation from German Occupation. But the Red Army still patrols the capital's rubble-strewn streets, and the ideals of the Revolution are but memories. Twenty-two-year-old Detective Emil Brod, an eager young man who spent the war working on a fishing boat in Finland, finally gets his chance to serve his country, investigating murder for the People's Militia.

The victim in Emil's first case is a state songwriter, but the evidence seems to point toward a political motive. He would like to investigate further, but even in his naivete, he realizes that the police academy never prepared him for this peculiar post-war environment, in which his colleagues are suspicious or silent, where lawlessness and corruption are the rules of the city, and in which he's still expected to investigate a murder. He is truly on his own in this new, dangerous world.

The Bridge of Sighs launches a unique series of crime novels featuring a dynamic cast of characters in an ever-evolving landscape, the politically volatile terrain of Eastern Europe in the second half of the 20th century.

The Bridge of Sighs is a 2004 Edgar Award Nominee for Best First Novel.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in 1948 in a small, unnamed Eastern European country devastated by WWII and still occupied by Russian troops, Steinhauer's promising debut introduces 22-year-old homicide inspector Emil Brod of the People's Militia. Brod's police academy training has prepared him for neither the rude reception he receives from his homicide comrades nor the difficult and risky assignment handed him as his initiation. The brutal murder of a moderately successful writer of patriotic songs enmeshes the bewildered Brod in an investigation hampered by his inexperience and lack of support from above as well as by other forces unknown but soon felt. Brod's trial by fire takes him through city and village, from small bars and tenements to streetwalkers and party officials. Steinhauer deftly presents minor characters, while he richly renders the country's travails as war is followed by occupation, suspicion, corruption and betrayal. The trail of murder, blackmail and wartime secrets even leads Brod to a divided Berlin, where he observes the non-stop activity at Tempelhof Airport during the Allied airlift. Perhaps the novel's weakest element is the amorphous Brod, though his appeal grows as the story progresses. One looks forward to Brod's developing into a fully realized character in future books in the series.

From Library Journal
In 1948, in a small, unnamed Eastern European country, homicide detective Emil Brod has been assigned a case that no one wants him to solve. To make matters worse, he's only 22 years old, this is his first case in the People's Militia, and his colleagues think he's a spy. The victim, a state songwriter, appears to have been blackmailing a politicos, a man formerly known as Smerdyakov the Butcher who has connections to the highest levels of the state and a past that includes wartime atrocities for the Nazis and then the Russians. In his attempt to uncover the truth, Brod soon finds himself battling a host of obstacles (including the murder of his best witness). At the same time, he finds himself attracted to the songwriter's wife, who becomes his lover and a possible victim herself. This is an intelligent, finely polished debut, loaded with atmospheric detail that effortlessly re-creates the rubble-strewn streets of the postwar period in an Eastern state "liberated" from German occupation by the Russians. Highly recommended for mystery collections.

*Starred Review* In 1948, in an unnamed Eastern European country behind the lowering iron curtain, Emil Brod reports for work as a homicide detective in the People's Militia. Fresh from the academy, his first day is a punch in the balls—literally. His new colleagues hate him, and he has no idea why. Forced to beg his boss for work, the case he is finally given is a political time bomb that seems certain to end his career before it's even started. But tenaciously, and despite frequent bodily injury, he persists, following clues that lead him to a rich widow's arms, to a Communist Party untouchable, and finally back to the events of World War II. It's hard to believe this is a debut: Steinhauer marries deft plotting with creative characterization and sets the union in a vividly re-created milieu. The case—a famous composer has had his head bashed in, possibly over a blackmail plot—is complicated by personalities, politics, geography, and the uncertainty of a torn continent trying to sew itself back together. Particularly inspired are the scenes set in the rubble of West Berlin, during the Berlin Airlift, which evoke an atmosphere worthy of the newsreels minus the scratches on the film. Part mystery, part thriller, part spy story—entirely promising. For fans of Eric Ambler, J. Robert Janes, Martin Cruz Smith, and Alan Furst. Graff, Keir

Try "The Tourist" First
By T. Stroll
It shows the continuing genius of "Casablanca" that a single verse from that movie can encapsulate the atmosphere of "The Bridge of Sighs." It comes from Annina, the young Bulgarian refugee who tells Rick Blaine, "We come from Bulgaria. Oh, things are very bad there, monsieur. A devil has the people by the throat." That's "The Bridge of Sighs" in a nutshell, and therein lies the challenge to the reader: how to enjoy such a relentlessly cheerless plot.

Moreover, neither the main character, Emil Brod, nor his love interest were particularly engaging. Brod's grandfather, a logorrheic simpleton, drove me to distraction with his tedious and tendentious bromides about the glories of socialism.

The novel was undermined further for a reason that's not the author's fault. I listened to the audio version and found it irritating. The reader made a number of characters sound like Grandpa Simpson, whose voice on "The Simpsons" cartoon television show is perhaps the most grating on television. There's a gay character who the reader caused to sound like the stereotypical mincing homosexual--with an overlay of Grandpa Simpson! The women, young and old, tended to sound octogenarian.

But Steinhauer is a talented writer. If you start by reading "The Bridge of Sighs," you may stop there, which would be a shame. Read Steinhauer's "The Tourist" first. It's a fine thriller, worth five stars. Then turn to "The Bridge of Sighs" and see if you like it. People's tastes vary, and the written text may be easier to absorb than was the audio version.

Seemed like an awkward introduction and unveiling of storyline
By Thomas D. Neumann
Seemed like an awkward introduction and unveiling of storyline. It may prove smoother with a re-read but not really that enthralling to tempt one to jump into a re-read. Might try book 2 to see if story/characters more accessible and interesting as novel of mystery intrigue etc.

Olen Steinhauer-Unable to Sell the Story
By Marco Antonio Abarca
It is 1948, the Iron Curtain has recently fallen in an un-named, Eastern European country. A song writer who specialized in patriotic melodies has been brutally murdered and a young homocide detective has been assigned the case. How will the innocent policeman navigate a cynical post-war world? A perfect premise for lovers of the noir police procedural.

Unforutnatley for the author Olen Steinhauer, post-war Eastern Europe was a real place and the concrete details are important. His strategy of creating a composite Eastern European country fails because he is unable to construct a realistic setting which permits the suspension of disbelief. Post war Eastern Europe has a rich history and there were plenty of vicious characters and nasty places to fill even the most hard boiled noir detective story. There is no need for a "Ruritania" like setting.

Sixty years have passed since the fall of the Iron Curtain across Eastern Europe. Any novelist who wants to set a story in this world must do the necessary research. Many years have passed but the era still resonates with modern readers. It is this attention to detail that separates distinguished novelists like Alan Furst from the also rans like Olen Steinhauer.
