From Publishers Weekly
The subtitle of Horn's treatise indicates just how much psychological ground he manages to cover in this encouraging how-to. Not just for kids on the playground anymore, bullying can have serious consequences for adults: violence, lawsuits, abuse and even death. Many of the "28 Ways to Lose Your Bully" strategies Horn (Tongue Fu) outlines are common sense, the same advice parents might give children after a rough recess: "Put Up a Brave Front," "Get Out of My Space," "Screw Up Your Courage." The number of mini-quizzes and aphoristic sayings make the book read like a large-scale PowerPoint presentation (not surprising, as Horn is a veteran of the corporate seminar circuit). Yet there's a realism here that is convincing: Horn's example situations include spouses who hit or cheat, spouses' bosses who grope, coaches who berate, false friends who cajole confidences, business partners who steal, neighbors who instill fear and people who chronically hit up family members for bail money (or "deja moo"). Role playing "Action Plans" for conversation help firm up psychic independence and avoid pointless, draining argument.

From Library Journal
"Bullies come in all shapes, sizes, genders, ages and professions," notes Horn (Tongue Fu!). True enough, but Horn's inconsistent writing and lack of useful tools drain this book of any worth. Confusingly titled chapters "Depend on the Kinkiness of Strangers," for example, concerns personal safety and self-defense render the table of contents useless. Good, albeit brief, chapters on school-yard bullies and using humor to defuse tension are outnumbered by those that mistake insensitivity for bullying or mismatch lessons and examples. This book covers much the same ground as Brandon Toropov's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Along with Difficult People and Robert M. Bramson's recently reprinted Coping with Difficult People. Compared with those books, Horn's work feels undercooked. Not recommended.

This is probably a great book for the majority of people who have problems with bullies. Unfortunately, it doesn't at all address the problem of having a bully for a boss. It does touch on the problem where a boss might have a bully for an employee, but since management is normally on the boss's side, I don't feel that there's much here for people who are being bullied by their employers. This may limit the book's usefulness for those who feel trapped between an abusive employer and a hostile job market.

Most of us were taught to be nice and want to believe that being nice will "work," but this author discourages practicing the golden rule to the point of becoming the "golden fool." The author explains the tactics we normally use with other people and explains why these tactics don't work with bullies and in fact may encourage the bully to intensify his or her efforts. For instance, while active listening and empathy may help in many cases, giving a bully a sympathetic ear will perpetuate the abuse. This will be useful to you if you have received well-meaning but misguided advice to be nice to or in some way accommodate the bully. The first 65 or so pages flesh out the problem, help you understand why it is appropriate to defend yourself, etc. Most of the remaining 250 or so pages help you learn what to say. The author provides LOTS of examples. For instance, instead of saying "I don't think it's very nice of you to say I'm a terrible cook," you should say "If you don't like my cooking, you're welcome to fix your own dinner." Such a response does not enter into a debate regarding the accusation.
Another book, "The Bully At Work," has until now been perhaps the primary source for those dealing with bullies at work, It is a well-researched and credible book that validates a target's experience and helps with options for dealing with the system (i.e., Human Resources). By contrast "Take the Bully by the Horns" has the greater emphasis on teaching very specific responses to a bully and has perhaps a wider application. Both books are valuable, but "Take the Bully by the Horns" is the best for "how to." It is an uncommonly useful self-help book.

Gem of a Book: Empowering and Effective!
By happycamper45
I have read countless self-help books, but this is the most on-target, put-into-practice-right-away book I have found so far.

From start to finish, the author offers many examples of common situations where you can almost painlessly learn to speak up for yourself. Ms. Horn assists beautifully by supplying the precise, straightforward language necessary to disarm those who cross boundaries, don't play fair or otherwise look to take advantage.

The author demonstrates over and over that you *can* take the bullies by the horns, stop 'em in their tracks and maintain your dignity in the process.

This book is for nice people everywhere who are looking for the right words and need a little help in the courage department to do what needs to be done in a world gone mad.

What if you could get inside the head of the boy you love? Hear his every thought...? Know his every dream...? Listen in on his every fantasy...?

The narrator of Inside the Mind of Gideon Rayburn can, and she tells us the story of her beloved Gid, an adorably clueless boy who flukes his way into one of the fanciest New England prep schools. Gideon's more than a little out of his league at Midvale, especially compared to Cullen and Nicholas, his charming but morally ambiguous rommates. They terrorize Gideon as they initiate him with a bet over Gid's borderline virginity, and the feisty, sexy Molly McGarry. Gideon is torn--he wants to prove himself, bu he also wants Pilar Benitez-Jones, the most beautiful girl he's ever seen. Hooking up with Molly might be possible, but winning Pilar would be legendary. On the other hand, Gideon actually likes Molly. It's all incredibly confusing and intoxicating. And one hysterically funny girl is savoring Gideon's every thought. But who is she?

Grade 9 Up This book is earthy and crude, but intensely honest. A nameless girl at Midvale Academy suddenly and inexplicably finds herself inside the head of 15-year-old Gideon, a new student at the Connecticut prep school. Hearing his thoughts gives her a unique understanding of how the mind of an intelligent but hormone-ruled boy works. Gid's wealthy, handsome, and popular roommates, Cullen and Nicholas, attempt to help him adjust, pointing out the hottest girls. Recognizing that he is limited in his coolness factor, they pick a girl who's not the top of the heap and bet on whether Gideon will be able to have sex with her before Halloween. The lucky girl is Molly McGarry. It's a shame, Gideon thinks, because although she is cute and smart, she's not his first pick; he's set his sights on beautiful, oozing-with-sexuality Pilar Benitez-Jones, who has indicated that she'll take him on, any time, any place. But a bet's a bet, and Gideon is excited about fulfilling the terms since he's still a virgin. The conceit sometimes makes it difficult to tell who's actually thinking, Gid or the girl, but if readers can get past this issue, the story works on many levels. There's a tremendous amount of pot smoking, drinking, and sneaking out at night, making the story most appropriate for older teens. The humor, well-developed characters, and fast-moving plot make the book deserving of shelf space, and teens will enjoy figuring out the identity of the narrator, who is revealed at the end. Gr. 9-12. "Everything you've ever wondered about what guys think (and feared about what they want), I'm going to tell you," says the anonymous narrator. And she does--every kind, gentle, anxious, sordid, crazy, vindictive, sexy thought that goes through 15-year-old Gideon Rayburn's head is channeled through the narrator's pen, a fellow student at Midvale, a Massachusetts prep school. We never learn her identity, only that she is one of the beautiful girls about whom Gid fantasizes. The mysterious voice is a clever device and part of the book's charm, but it's also part of its problem. It's easy to forget that Gid's brain is running through a female filter, so when that female viewpoint appears, usually in a funny comment at male expense, it can be jarring. Still, the book will be an easy sell. Gid is the kind of truly nice guy most girls want guys to be: sensitive, funny, and a bit lusty. And average nice guys will relate to Gid's worries about popularity and girls. Lots of fun and food for thought. Frances Bradburn

I read it in high school, but I just read it again, and I still love it. It's interesting to be "inside" Rayburn's mind, especially since you think all he is is some horny high school nerd. Really fun read.

inside the mind of sarah miller
By Jennifer Doyle
The premise of this novel grabbed me: the narrator is a girl who knows everything that the title character Gideon is thinking. It's a creative and funny way to explore the simple fact that, really, most of the time girls are ahead of boys in knowing what the really want! It's kindof like "Being John Malkovitch" - except here Malkovitch is a teenage boy who finds himself at a prep school surrounded by boys and girls way cooler (and richer) than he is. And the girl inside his head is a mystery - someone in his world, but who? Miller pulls no punches, she gets right up in there, taking on the awful years of sorting out how and where we fit in the world. Not only do I recommend this book to teens, I recommend it to grown-ups looking for a smart and funny read. It'll take you back (and make you glad you don't have to GO back!).

The Triumph of the Sun (Courtney Family Adventures), by Wilbur Smith

From one of the world's most celebrated and bestselling novelists comes an epic adventure in the spirit and tradition of Monsoon and Blue Horizon.

It is 1884, and in the Sudan, decades of brutal misgovernment by the ruling Egyptian Khedive in Cairo precipitates a bloody rebellion and Holy War. The charismatic new religious leader, the Mahdi or "Expected One," has gathered his forces of Arab warlords in preparation for a siege on the city of Khartoum. The British are forced to intervene to protect their national interests and to attempt to rescue the hundreds of British subjects stranded in the city.

Along with hundreds of others, British trader and businessman Ryder Courtney is trapped in the capital city of Khartoum under the orders of the infamously iron-willed General Charles George Gordon. It is here that he meets skilled soldier and swordsman Captain Penrod Ballantyne of the 10th Hussars and the British Consul, David Benbrook, as well as Benbrook's three beautiful daughters. Against the vivid and bloody backdrop of the Arabs' fierce and merciless siege these three powerful men must fight to survive.

Rich with vibrant historical detail and infused with his inimitable powers of storytelling, The Triumph of the Sun is Wilbur Smith at his masterful best.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in colonial Egypt at the end of Victoria's reign, this sweeping romantic epic reprises Smith regulars—scions of the Courteneys and Ballantynes. (The two fictional British families have provided character fodder for least half of Smith's 30 novels.) Bloodthirsty legions of Arab dervish troops under the command of the Mahdi, or ruling successor to the Prophet Muhammad, have surrounded (but not taken) Khartoum, trapping comely 17-year-old Rebecca Benbrook; her consul general father, David; and her younger twin sisters, Saffron and Amber. The appearance of a cargo boat owned by the dashing, entrepreneurial Ryder Courteney, as well as the subsequent appearance of Capt. Penrod Ballantyne of Her Majesty's 10th Hussars, give hope. Naïve Rebecca falls in love with Ballantyne, who deflowers her before racing off to warn the rescue force commander that the commander is outnumbered 25 to one. The dervish, led by the fearsome Emir Osman Atalan, overrun Khartoum, and Rebecca's father is brutally butchered; the saga continues with Penrod heroically leading troops against Osman. Steamy romance alternates with gore, and it's all done by-the-numbers in a good way—like a junky, absorbing miniseries. Fans will not be disappointed. (June)

As popular as he is prolific, and as masterful a storyteller now as he has ever been, Smith once again visits Africa, the continent where he was born, the source of his inspiration, and the setting for his supremely adventuresome novels that make authentic and riveting use of history. He took readers to ancient Egypt in the marvelously wrought River God (1994), and now he returns there, this time in the late nineteenth century, at the apex of the British Empire. Smith bases this tightly woven narrative on an actual incident in British colonial history: the holy war conducted by a Sudanese man proclaiming himself the Mahdi, or savior, and his forces' siege of the British garrison at Khartoum, at the convergence of the White and Blue Nile in the Egyptian-held Sudan. Readers who appreciate World War II-era spy thrillers will enjoy this tale of espionage, disguise, and stabbings in the dark, as Smith deliciously elaborates on all the military and religious issues and events surrounding the siege. He marshals telling detail into a story that is--like the Nile itself--swift and powerful. Brad Hooper

Triumph of the Sun is another triumph for Smith !
By Ric Wasley
Once again Wilbur Smith confirms his mastery of meticulous historical research coupled with a good old fashioned 'rip-roaring' yarn!
As with his dozens of other tales that span the history of his of his fictional Courtney family, this tale keeps the reader literally on the edge of their seat throughout all 500 plus pages.
As with the other superb books which track over four centuries of the lives, loves and struggles the Courtney clan, Triumph of the Sun is set against the sprawling backdrop of Africa.
This novel covers the adventures of Ryder Courtney and pits him against the fanatical Mahdi and the infamous dervish troops during the long siege of Khartoum defended by the legendary British General Gordon.
In this novel however Courtney's heroics almost pale in comparison to a member of the other fictional family of Smith's African saga's, Captain Penrod Ballantyne.
Ballentyne plays the role of the handsome, dashing, fearless young British officer that was most typified in the swashbuckling films of the 30' and 40's, by Errol Flynn.
The almost Hollywood style love interest is supplied by the beautiful teenage daughter of the British consul general, Rebecca Benbrook. In a neat little package that would have done a Hollywood director proud, Smith also manages to throw two preteen younger sisters, Saffron and Amber, into the mix as well.
As the story weaves in and out to cover the long years of the siege and battles, Smith cleverly develops the pair of young sisters into love interests as we watch them grow up under the most adverse but exciting of conditions.
In the hands of a lesser author, this tale of dashing hero's and winsome maidens in peril could have turned into a hackneyed 'Saturday matinee' of a novel.
But Smith is a master when it come to the historical saga. And although both Ryder and Penrod make escapes from certain death, survive fiendish tortures and rescue fair maidens, Smith spices the mix with liberal doses of really good history and cunningly woven and often shocking detail, so that the reader is truly caught up in the adventure and never bored.
As a matter of fact there is one incident when Penrod is held captive by a dervish prince, who suspects him of treachery, where I actually find myself getting choked up. The dervish decides to expose Perod by torturing in the most gruesome manner imaginable, a poor little slave girl that Penrod has befriended.
For the rest of the novel, I perused the pages with a vengeance, waiting for Penrod to even the score by plunging a saber into the dervish's guts!
It is a powerful writer who can evoke that sort of emotion in a reader, and Smith never disappoints.
I heartily recommend Triumph of the Sun as yet another in Wilbur Smith's long list of triumph's.

Don't waste your time or money
By Robert Hansohn
I am an avid reader of Wilbur Smith and have read all his novels. To me he has been an excellent story teller. But this novel is among his worst if not the worst he has written. Among the many flaws are poor character development, improbable plot twists and gratuitous sex scenes that lend little if anything to the story. He, his editors and publishers let us down on this one. It is not worth the hardback price, or even the paperback price. Wait until it comes to your local library. In the meantime you are not missing a thing. What a disappointment to loyal fans who have in the past revered most of his works.

Mr. Smith Brings History to Life Again!!
By John R. Linnell
Having finished this novel, I have now read all of Wilbur Smith thirty novels and I must say that the man never strays far from what made us start reading him in the first place. His novels are not for the faint of heart as there is considerable cruelty in them, both with animals and our fellow man, but that is the way things happened during the times he writes about. There are also some fairly graphic sexual accounts. If that is not your cup of tea, you had probably better find a different author. However, Smith in his books always follows the thread of history in whatever part of the African continent he is writing about and gives life and color to a part of the world that many of us know too little about. This book is set basically in The Sudan and brings to life the seige of Khartoum and it's aftermath in a most interesting and realistic way. As in many of his books, a Ballantyne and a Courtney are prominently featured along with many other characters from both history and Mr. Smith's most fertile mind. My only criticisim of the book is that with 50 or so pages to go I was looking forward to the sequel. Alas, that is not to be. However, the story is vintage Wilbur Smith and if he is someone you enjoy reading, this novel will not change that.

Organizing from the Right Side of the Brain: A Creative Approach to Getting Organized, by Lee Silber

Almost all the organizing books on the market today target the "left-brainer" - people who are generally disciplined, neat, and analytical. But for those who are more creative and spontaneous rather than logical and detail-oriented, help is on the way! In this book, Silber turns traditional organizing advice on its head and offers unique solutions that complement the unorthodox lifestyle of the creative "right-brainer."

For example:
* Discover how right-brainers can be organized in a left-brain world
* Overcome obstacles that stand in the way of being more organized
* Pile, don't file - put paper in its place the right-brained way
* Learn how being a "pack rat" can be a good thing

This creative new approach to getting it together is perfect for those who can't relate to boring traditional organizing techniques!

From Publishers Weekly
The right side of the brain is the creative but illogical, nonlinear part of the organ, and it doesn’t cater to systematic tidiness. Is it possible, then, for right-brainers to be organized? Organizing guru Silber (Time Management for the Creative Person; etc.) has some answers. "We (right-brainers) can be just as organized as our left-brain counterparts (even more so), but we prefer to do it in our own unique way—with a little savoir faire," he writes encouragingly. In addition to general principles, like learning to understand "why you put things where you do" as the basis for a personal organizing system, Silber offers concrete advice: put things where it makes sense to put them; create zones for certain activities and organize accordingly. And best of all, he says pile, don’t file your papers: some people do thrive on chaos, he acknowledges, and visually stimulated people can find it helpful to have things in plain view. If you’ve been fighting a lifelong and losing battle to get rid of the clutter, Silber’s sprightly and thorough advice could be the answer.

Organizing for ALL Brainers...
By Julie Belmont
Organizing from the Right Side of the Brain is an excellent and very useful book, whether you are Right Brained, Left Brained or in my case a little of both. This book makes sense and it takes a very tedious and sometimes overwhelming task and simplifies it so the chore can be accomplisehd in an organized, fun, logical and still creative way. Lee achieves this by presenting scenarios from individuals giving us the opportunity to choose which system works best for us. He gives us options that are not rigid and understands the creative process allowing for the difference in our thinking and life styles. I found this book amazingly helpful at a time in my life when I am in the midst of having two books published of my own, and dealing with starting a home based office for my writing and consulting business; believe me I needed the organization skills Lee shared. By implementing his creative and sometimes unorthodox guidelines, my creative space is efficient, tidy and conducive to many hours of creativity without having the interruption of not been able to find pertinent papers or files. As always Lee presents his creative guidance in a light and witty way, as Lee Silber has established in his Creative book series.

Very Helpful !
By L. Haschart
This is a really helpful book for people who are not naturally the "stack your magazines neatly on the coffee table" - type. I have been getting better at organizing over the years and now that I am homeschooling my kids I really need to lead by example. I feel the author really understands the pitfalls of traditional organizing books and sets out to give practical solutions to right-brained, creative people who don't want to be swallowed by their clutter. Buy it ! You'll be glad you did.

Being Messy Doesn't Make You a Bad Person
By Maeri
Most organizing books can't help implying that clutter and all-around personal messiness is a sign of moral weakness or a character defect. So no matter how well-intentioned the reader is when they start the book, they can't help feeling that there's something wrong with them for needing help organizing themselves in the first place. What's refreshing about this book is that Silber suggests the opposite--that right-brained messy people are more creative, fun and engaged than the uptight left-brained people who usually make them feel so completely inadequate. It's a relief not to be judged and found morally wanting simply for being messy.

Silber's a good-natured writer who comes up with a lot of ingenious ideas for creative people to keep their lives from going out of control; he suggests using lots of post-it notes, putting things on bulletin boards or hanging them on hooks (over the door hooks are the best, in my experience). A lot of his ideas would be great for kids--maybe he could write a book just for them. They would appreciate his sense of humor and nonjudgmental attitude.

Daily Life in Hitler's Germany, by John McDonald, Matthew S. Seligmann, John Davison

Daily Life in Hitler's Germany tells the story of what it was like to actually live under the Nazi regime in the 1930s and during the war years of the early 1940s. The wide range of topics examined in the book include the Nazi indoctrination of children through such organizations as the Hitler Youth, the subversion of the arts to serve National Socialist ideology, the Nazi obsession with sport as a means of creating a super-fit Aryan race, the role of women in Germany in the 1930s, and the fate of those individuals and races who had no place in the Thousand Year Reich. In addition, Daily Life in Hitler's Germany looks closely at the Nazi "economic miracle" of the 1930s to explain how unemployment in Germany had virtually disappeared by 1939.

Written by experts on twentieth-century and German history, the book gets under the skin of the Third Reich to bring the most chilling era in Germany's part to life. Above all, the Third Reich was the manifestation of the character, ambitions, and will of its leader, Adolf Hitler. Dogmatic and intolerant in his simplistic views, eventually the Nazi state reflected his crude belief in Darwinism: that struggle was the father of all things. Daily Life in Hitler's Germany examines fully how Hitler influenced the everyday lives of millions of ordinary Germans.

The hundreds of photographs in the book are particularly interesting, and show many facets of the Nazi regime. Propaganda and ritual were central to Nazi social control, and so Daily Life in Hitler's Germany contains images of the mass Nuremberg rallies, the persecution of the Jews and other minorities, the 1936 Olympic Games, and the large-scale military maneuvers conducted by the armed forces. Ultimately, the Third Reich failed in its aim of building a large empire in Eastern Europe, and the price was paid by the German people themselves. As Daily Life in Hitler's Germany shows, Germany's cities were reduced to rubble by strategic bombing, and the country itself was torn apart and then divided in the most destructive war in modern history.

Includes:
- Highly illustrated account of everyday life as it affected ordinary Germands during the Third Reich, 1933-1945
- Contains first-hand accounts from German civilians and military personnel who lived through the years of Nazi rule
- Written by experts on the social, political, economic, and military history of the Third Reich
- Includes chapters on resistance to Nazi rule, the role of women in the Third Reich, and minorities and genocide
- Illustrated with 270 black-and-white photographs showing all aspects of life in the Third Reich

The Picture of Evil
By W. Staples
I must agree with with other two reviews of this book about the rather poor text. While it does occasionally bring up an interesting point, a number of its arguments are discredited by a large number of contrasting studies.

That said, what is important are the photographs. Here is the face of Nazi Germany. One of the most frightening pictures was of the young men, students and SA, burning books outside the university in Berlin in May of 1933 (page 94). The expressions of pure predatory joy are typical of ideological "true believers." The thuggish brutality of the SA is brought out in another photo, which at the same time hints at the more subtle evil of the SS (page 90). Pages 47 and 51 give evidence of the deadness, normally seen in revolutionary art, of Nazi high art. An entire chapter is devoted to the Hitler Youth; showing the indoctrination of the young by dressing them the same, having them beat drums, and march chanting political slogans.

Hitler came to power promising to save Germany's middle class, though his base was initially among the prolitariat. In the beginning the laboring class was largely split between left and right. The National Socialists started as a rightist labor union. Attaining power, they outlawed all other unions. While working conditions before the Nazis weren't good, from the pictures, one gets the impression that they slipped even before the Allied bombing campaign.

Buy this book for the pictures and buy "The Nazi Seizure of Power: The Experience of a Single German Town 1922-1945" by William Sheriden Allen (available from Amazon.com) for the text.

Amateurish
By Bill W.
I really thought this would be a book to add to my studies of Germany during the period of the Third Reich. Not to be. The narrative is very amateurish and sounds more like a script directed at the mentality of people who enjoy watching commercial television. A big disappointment but maybe they thought that would help to sell more books.

poor scholarship

Nazi Germany and its bloody social engineering are bad enough but this book and its extremly shoddy scholarship on dayly life for the average german really does honest scholorship a major disservice.

Fantastic: The Life of Arnold Schwarzenegger, by Laurence Leamer

The life of Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the most remarkable success stories in the U.S. Here is a young man from an Austrian village who became the greatest bodybuilder in history, a behemoth who even today in retirement is the dominating figure in the sport. Here is an immigrant with a heavy accent and a four syllable last name, who marries a Kennedy princess and becomes the number one movie star in the world, an icon known and celebrated everywhere. Here is a political novice with no administrative experience who becomes governor of California in one of the most unusual and controversial elections in American history, and confounds his critics by proving an effective, popular leader. Leamer shows how and why this man of willful ambition and limitless drive achieved his unprecedented accomplishments. As the author of a celebrated trilogy on the Kennedy family, Leamer has access to a unique array of sources. Leamer traveled with candidate Schwarzenegger during the gubernatorial campaign. He has interviewed Governor Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver, and their closest friends and associates, most of whom had never talked to an author before. The result is a startlingly intimate book, the pages studded with news making revelations. This book of passionate intensity captures a Schwarzenegger unlike any other public figure of our time, a unique political/cultural figure, his time in Sacramento only a way station on a journey where no one has traveled before. The book captures the personal Schwarzenegger, too, and the story of his single days, marriage, and family life. No one who reads this book will ever see Schwarzenegger in the same way again.

From Publishers Weekly
America's love affair with machine brutalism spills over into this somewhat smitten biography of its foremost icon. Leamer (The Kennedy Women) chronicles Schwarzenegger's progress from bodybuilder to action-movie megastar, then California governor, visiting along the way his romance with Kennedy scion Maria Shriver and feud with rival Hollywood muscle-head Sylvester Stallone. It's a tale of relentless self-promotion: Schwarzenegger's fanatical weight-lifting routines are nothing compared with his grueling publicity marathons, including 94 puff-piece interviews in one day for Last Action Hero. Leamer gives his subject a bombastically vain personality, then struggles to make it appealing. He celebrates Schwarzenegger's room-filling ebullience, his "emotional wisdom" and "agape." He discerns a "subtle, ironic distance" in Schwarzenegger's acting. And Leamer downplays Schwarzenegger's alleged habit of groping women, chalking it up to "signals" sent by women who secretly welcome his advances, a casual European attitude toward sex that is "frustrated and puzzled" by American "political correctness" and a fun-loving spirit that "moves toward whatever is most joyful and gives him pleasure." The author is less indulgent toward what he sees as Schwarzenegger's substance-free political campaigning and unwillingness to grapple with California's long-term budget crisis. His book is not fantastic, but it's well researched and moves along at a pleasantly robotic clip.

From Booklist
What can one say about the outsized, often outrageous Arnold Schwarzenegger--tank driver, bodybuilding champion, action-movie megastar, and now governor of California--that he has not already boasted about himself? Let me tell you (as Arnold--on a first-name basis with everyone--might say), he is one of the most successful acts in the history of promotion. However, veteran celebrity biographer Leamer has a lot to say here that Arnold might not necessarily approve of, from his savvy in thriving in the movie industry to allegations about his boorish behavior with women. Although Schwarzenegger granted Leamer an interview, this is not an authorized work. Nor is it a wrecking ball of dishing. Coming after decades of books (Pumping Iron, 1974), muscle-magazine cover stories, and tabloid fodder about the superstar, it sorts through the pulp and the fiction on a search for the real Arnold and largely finds him. Part of his myth is that of the self-made man; while that is true of Arnold's later days, in his early years, he benefited from crucial patrons drawn to his sunny-skies ebullience, none more so than Joe Weider, publisher of bodybuilding magazines and the impetus behind Arnold's move to Los Angeles in 1968. Covering Arnold's competitions, movies, marriage to Maria Shriver, and electoral victory in 2003, Leamer skillfully sails between the idolaters and the iconoclasts, heading toward the multitude of readers interested in Arnold's character and life. “No American immigrant’s tale of our time is more extraordinary than that of the man who is not only Mr. Universe Emeritus but also Hollywood’s beloved Terminator, California’s popular Governor, the star Republican of the Kennedy family and the nation’s possible future President: Arnold Schwarzenegger. Charting Arnold’s rise from the backwoods of Austria to the pinnacle of success, Laurence Leamer has written a modern Horatio Alger story that guides us through the hidden rooms of bodybuilding, action movies and finally politics in America in the 21st century. Rich with new interviews and sources, the book illuminates not only Schwarzenegger’s life, but the very process of achieving fame itself. Utterly fascinating, unflinchingly candid and relentlessly readable, Fantastic will be the standard by which all other works on Arnold Schwarzenegger are judged.”—Nigel Hamilton, author of JFK: Reckless Youth

The Truth About A Fantastic Character
By G. Reid
All about Arnold Schwarzenegger, his friends, his family and his incredible climb to fame and fortune. The author has managed to truly present the life of Schwarzenegger without either a negative or a positive bias. The author has been able to tell the story from the middle position giving the reader the truth, good and bad, about his subject. Schwarzenegger is a very interesting person, but not a god-like person as many of the voters in California hoped he would be.

A fair and insightful look at Arnold that doesn't take sides - the best of his bios!
By John
There have been some really bad Arnold biographies in the past. They've either been written by huge fans of the actor who ignore all his mistakes and "unlikable" traits, or authors who detest Schwarzenegger and smear tabloid reports all over their pages.

"Fantastic" is the best Arnold Schwarzenegger biography out there, and it's a very insightful - and fair - portrait of the man.

Author Laurence Leamer is a huge Kennedy fan (he's written books "The Kennedy Men" and "The Kennedy Women") so it's reasonable to assume he is a Democrat. Arnold, as we all know, is not. Leamer has likely written this book because Arnold is married to Maria Shriver, a Kennedy family member.

As a result he doesn't paint everything picture-perfect. I get the feeling he likes Arnold, but also sees another side of the action star that people don't know about - a vicious, mean-spirited man with an obsession for fame and fortune.

Leamer recalls a story surrounding the release of "Red Heat" in 1988. Schwarzenegger was crying, a newspaper in his hand. One of Arnie's friends asked what is wrong. He pointed to the paper: "Red Heat" had debuted at no. 2 at the box office with only $37 million (back then, that was actually quite a lot, but it still didn't match the gross of his earlier films). "Don't worry, it's number two," his friend told him. And Arnold replied, "But I want to be number one!"

This book covers Arnold's life from childhood to political adulthood. It doesn't skip over the harsh stuff - it details his sexual lust (traced back to his early days of bodybuilding) and quest for fame. It mentions his affairs, and his row with Sylvester Stallone in the late '80s and early '90s. (The entire ordeal is fascinating, something I had never been aware of - I always thought they were friends! Now the Stallone put-down in the movie "Twins" takes on a whole new edge!)

At the same time, Leamer is respectful of the movie star and points out his good traits, as well. He paints him as a joyful, light-hearted guy who just likes to have a good time, but can be obsessive at times and, when aggravated, rather vicious.

"Fantastic" is, well, a fantastic insight into the life of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the first true Arnold bio to deliver the goods without skipping over crucial events or focusing solely on his mishaps.

A very good read: well written and intelligent, I recomend it to fans - or non-fans, even - of Schwarzenegger without hesitation.

Interesting subject, fairly assessed
By Michael Heath
Mr. Leamer had a tremendously difficult task, writing a biography about a subject who reached the pinnacle in three different functional areas whose personal life has been on display for 30+ years.

Mr. Leamer is able to provide considerable perspective in each discipline with the exception of Arnold's business dealings. Having a brother who is a nationally recognized economist appeared to really help bring a fair and compelling perspective of Arnold's politics that is rarely found in the newspapers that cover CA politics. Leamer is also able to get Arnold's closest associates on the record, making this body of work argubly the definitive biography of Arnold that mayever be written for the period of his life that is covered.

Besides being unbiased, I was also impressed with Leamer's writing skills, the book is highly readable without sinking to innuendo and massive amounts of anonymous quotes a la' Kitty Kelly.

While Arnold is quite the character, making it easy in terms of having lots entertaining content to cover, the fact he is visible makes for a challenge to divulge fresh unknown material. I believe Leamer best excels in presenting the nature of Arnold's personality, in fact he does an excellent job of helping us to understand how a gregarious guy like Arnold that loves people could also be so crude and demeaning to not just his foes, but those around him.

Because Arnold is such a likable personality and has excelled in five areas (sports, business, acting, and politics); Leamer's Arnold is presented in a mostly positive light - I would assume that Arnold and his family would be happy with this product. I do think however that the book is fair and when it presents stories that elevate or detract from his reputation; I believe Leamer presents these stories in the proper context.

I also recommend this book to anyone who is ambitous; Arnold's life is a classic case study on how to succeed, he's earned his station in life, and Leamer explains how. What's fun for us is it appears that Arnold's climb to success was a "fantastically" joyous ride.

Cannabis: A History, by Martin Booth

To some it's the classic "gateway drug", to others it is a harmless way to relax, or provide relief from crippling pain. Some fear it is a dangerous drug with addictive properties; to others still it is a legal anomaly and should be decriminalized. Whatever the viewpoint, and by whatever name it is known, cannabis--or marijuana, hashish, dope, pot, weed, grass, ganja--incites debate at every level, and the effect it has on the cultures and economics of every corner of the globe is undeniable.

In this definitive study, Martin Booth crafts a tale of medical advance, religious enlightenment, political subterfuge and human rights; of law enforcement and custom officers, cunning smugglers, street pushers, gang warfare, writers, artists, musicians, and happy-go-lucky hippies and potheads.

Booth chronicles the fascinating and often mystifying process through which cannabis, a relatively harmless substance, became outlawed throughout the Western world, and the devastating effect such legislation has on the global economy. Above all, he demonstrates how the case for decriminalization remains one of the twenty-first century's hottest topics.

From Publishers Weekly
Quick?what do Napoleon’s troops, Asian cooking, Armani jeans, the Gutenberg Bible and the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company have in common? According to British novelist Booth (Opium; Hiroshima Joe; etc.), all of these have used some part of the versatile cannabis plant. In this densely packed, wide-ranging history, Booth draws on religion, history, ecology, horticulture, linguistics, pop culture and medical research to correct the falsehoods surrounding the oft-banned plant and to painstakingly build his case that the war on cannabis has little to do with concerns for public health or order. Along the way, Booth introduces a dizzying parade of historical persons that includes visionaries, scientists, beatniks, farmers, artists, soldiers and smugglers. Unlike many of the other more partisan books on cannabis, the overall tone of Booth’s volume is objective, unemotional and factual-a stance that makes for fine impartial argument, but also occasionally dull reading. At its best, however, the book’s attention to detail lures the reader ever more deeply into cannabis history. Descriptions of hip, mid-century New York, London and Amsterdam, for example, help illuminate the role of cannabis in more recent cultural movements. And a quick survey of the myths about the drug’s psychological effects shows how laws banning cannabis were often used as an excuse to suppress blacks and migrant Mexican workers. Booth also discusses provocative legal, political and economic actions (for and against cannabis) that have affected millions of people. In his profile of a plant that can be an intoxicant, fiber, cooking ingredient, medicine and potential source of environmentally friendly products, he gives readers a fascinating sourcebook about "the most widely produced, trafficked and used illicit drug on earth." From Booklist
Booth chronicles that "adaptive and highly successful annual found . . . throughout the temperate and tropical zones," cannabis, with the panache he exhibited in Opium (1998). Though the noble plant's precise origins are hazy, the name cannabis probably evolved from antecedents meaning fragrant cane. Whatever it has been called, it has been beloved and reviled by personages ranging from twelfth-century Sufi monks, who chewed it for its mood-altering properties, to anti-pot Depression-era federal agent Harry Anslinger and today's drug warriors. Favored by poets (Coleridge sought to wean himself from opium with it), musicians and actors (Gene Krupa and Robert Mitchum, both busted in Anslinger's "star-bust campaign"), and worse (black-magician Aleister Crowley, who put it in his recreational-substance armamentarium). Besides famous users, Booth discusses home-growing ganja and present-day international trafficking in it, though from a British perspective. His pithy coverage of Rastafarians is a particular treat. While no brief for legalization, Cannabis objectively raises points and issues threatening to zero-tolerance environments; more open collections, however, should welcome it. Mike Tribby

An Eyeopener....
By Melanie de Sousa
Whether you are pro or anti legalization of marijuana use for adults or for medical use, it matters not. At least make an educated decision. Booth provides a well researched and engaging narrative on the history of cannabis and the foibles of those raging against the dangers of The Devil Weed, including hashish. Included are ancient times and maritime; prohibitions solely based on racism (Chinese, Africans and Mexicans); "lumping" mary jane in with opium, heroin and cocaine as if they all are the same thing, and the fear mongering of politicos and the press, most often with little or no personal experience or scientific fact. Economics of weed and hemp are also discussed. Easy to read and enlightening - a real eye-opener to the long and bumpy history and use of marijuana for medicinal, religious and recreational purposes over the centuries. Highly recommended.

smoking!!!!!

Pot? Ganja? Marijuana ? The difference...??? Read on...
The author covers the historical development of a very controversial plant delicately.... Cannabis is traced back to ancient times where its usage was (and still is in some parts of the world)more medicinal and related to religious rites as opposed to recreational... The books also delves into the components of the plant itself, optimal growing conditions, growing locations... the active ingredient that gives consumers the BANG!!!

come to the middle of the book we are enlighten with how the move against cannabis was first born.... and later explain the stand of governments on cannabis....

the book covers cannabis from a historical and cultural point of view!!! I enjoyed it!!! a superb history!!!!

Good General History
By Cwn_Annwn
There were areas I wish he would have went more in depth with, like how the coffeehouse scene in Holland came into existance and other areas I wasn't as interested in, like hippy pop culture. Also he overemphasizes a lot of things that went on in Britain, which historicly isn't exactly the epicenter for Marijuana activity and culture. The author isn't a stoner, or at least doesn't come off as one, but he seems to be pro-Cannabis at least to the extent of showing the stupidity of the law enforcement witchhunts against what is more or less a harmless "drug". Overall a good general history of Cannabis.
