Amazon.com Review
From the wife of the late Dr. Robert Atkins, here is an inventive cookbook that will allow low carb devotees to keep the faith without cutting down the fat. Grounded in the carb counting, fat allowing formula that launched millions of dieters, Veronica Atkins has designed a book "to make doing Atkins a permanent part of your life."

Following a refresher course on the four phases of Atkins, she includes 250 easy to follow recipes and cooking tips geared for people close to their weight goals, in which she underlines the essentials of low carb ingredients and preparation (substitute wheat for white, splenda for sugar, nuts for breadcrumbs, cream or broth for flour). Gathered into three main sections ("day by day", "on the weekend", and "party and holiday menus"), recipes range from family dinners, brownbag lunches and snacks to brunch dishes and camping treats. Singles "tired of dividing recipes by four" will also enjoy the "cooking for one" section, and those who fear the holiday temptations will find inspiration to stay on track in such creative fares as Atkins-friendly Thanksgiving side dishes, low carb Xmas eggnog, Zucchini Hanukkah latkes, Superbowl pomegranate guacamole, Oscar Night chocolate martinis and a dozen uses for leftover matzo.

Readers may be distracted from the simplicity and freshness of the recipes by a few zany suggestions (alphabetizing spices to save time) and the marketing of the Atkins brand products in the many recipes that use Atkins mixes, pastas and flavorings. Yet the book’s creative approach will assure the faithful that a low carb diet can be a moveable feast. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
Just when it seems there could be nothing more to add to the low-carb canon, here's another supplement to the Atkins juggernaut. An enthusiastic, conversational companion cookbook to the bestselling Atkins for Life, the book often suggests readers use Atkins brand ingredients (such as pasta, bread, and pancake and waffle mix). Still, the 250 recipes that Atkins (widow of Robert C. Atkins) presents are simple enough for kitchen novices and varied enough to make the prospect of low-carb dieting less daunting. Atkins includes nutritional information, specifics on which phase of the diet plan each recipe falls into and cooking tips. Entries range from fairly commonplace low-carb fare (such as Minted Lamb Chops with Mango-Cucumber Salad or Asparagus, Pepper, and Goat Cheese Frittata) to surprisingly Atkins-friendly pastas and sweets (like Pasta with Gorgonzola and Walnuts, and Applesauce Pumpkin Muffins). With this volume's recipes for all occasions, including weeknight suppers, dinners for one, brown-bag lunches, and holidays and parties, Atkins devotees can no longer use lack of selection as an excuse for slipping off the wagon. Atkins products advertisement
By Shawn Hettinga
I am a huge fan or Dr. Atkins; I firmly believe in low-carb diets for all people, not just those with weight issues. This recipe book claims to have over 250 recipes for every occassion (it is broken into weekday, weekend, morning, holiday, etc.). In addition, each recipe is categorized as 1, 2, 3, or 4 (the stages of progression), and this organized method of delivery is easily translated when finding recipes for the current stage of eating. However, I am strongly disappointed with the recipes and carb content in most. First of all, Mrs. Atkins gives us recipes for foods that a child could make without a cookbook. A great example of this is the bean and cheese burritos (spread low-carb tortilla with organic refried beans, sprinkle with shredded cheese, and fold). Really? On the other hand, she lists recipes that involve caviar, lobster, and/ or oysters. Again, really? The most disappointing aspect of the book is that it is a blatently obvious advertisement for Atkins brand products (which are not needed for this lifestyle). The main ingredient in nearly all of the recipes involve some form of Atkins brownie mix, Atkins chocolate bars, ice-cream, etc. And to add to the disappointment, she uses ingredients that a low-carb lifestyle will not allow (such as whole milk, apricot preserves, etc.). Overall, this is just a picture book for those who live on a serious low-carb regimen.

The Numbers Game: Baseball's Lifelong Fascination with Statistics, by Alan Schwarz

Most baseball fans, players and even team executives assume that the national pastime's infatuation with statistics is simply a by-product of the information age, a phenomenon that blossomed only after the arrival of Bill James and computers in the 1980s. They couldn't be more wrong.

In this award-winning book, Alan Schwarz - whom bestselling Moneyball author Michael Lewis calls "one of today's best baseball journalists" - provides the first-ever history of baseball statistics, showing how baseball and its numbers have been inseparable ever since the pastime's birth in 1845. He tells the history of this obsession through the lives of the people who felt it most: Henry Chadwick, the 19th-century writer who invented the first box score and harped endlessly about which statistics mattered and which did not; Allan Roth, Branch Rickey's right-hand numbers man with the late-1940s Brooklyn Dodgers; Earnshaw Cook, a scientist and Manhattan Project veteran who retired to pursue inventing the perfect baseball statistic; John Dewan, a former Strat-O-Matic maven who built STATS Inc. into a multimillion-dollar powerhouse for statistics over the Internet; and dozens more.

Schwarz paints a history not just of baseball statistics, but of the soul of the sport itself. Named as ESPN's 2004 Baseball Book of the Year, The Numbers Game will be an invaluable part of any fan's library and go down as one of the sport's classic books.

From Publishers Weekly
Sports journalist Schwarz brings to the fore this intelligent, smartly researched and often hilarious look at the use of statistics in baseball, which Schwarz definitively shows to "date back to the game's earliest days in the 19th century." It will delight any fan who memorizes the numbers on the back of trading cards or pores over newspaper box scores. The book's success is rooted in its focus on the people "obsessed with baseball's statistics ever since the box score started it all in 1845," rather than being about the statistics themselves. The reader is presented with enthusiastic but unvarnished looks at such key figures as Henry Chadwick, whose love for numbers led to his inventing the box score grid that remains, Schwarz shows, "virtually unchanged to this day"; Allan Roth, the numbers man hired by the Brooklyn Dodgers who was as important to the team's success as its famed GM Branch Rickey; and the all-but-forgotten work of George Lindsey, one of the first people to apply statistical analysis to weigh various baseball strategies. Delivered in a delightfully breezy and confident style, this volume also serves as an excellent alternate or parallel history of the sport, as we see how the statistics influenced the game itself—such as the banning of the spitball—as much as they were used to detail individual games.

I have two friends...
By M J Heilbron Jr.
...who this book was meant for. I bet you do too. You'll need a copy too.

I read Alan Schwarz' "The Numbers Game" just before I read Michael Lewis' "Moneyball", and I'm better off because of it.
Schwarz was acknowledged by Lewis in his own book (while Schwarz was writing this one), and there are a few passages that are strikingly similar.

Lewis is a better writer; Schwarz is a little more "clumsy" I guess. Not as elegant.

But still, he tells a story of such breadth it's a bit staggering. He does so with deft, concise descriptions. They're often funny as all get out.

The two books work like two hands, interlocking. The depiction of "baseball" is more detailed after spending time with both. Schwarz places "Moneyball" in a bigger perspective; Lewis brings "The Numbers Game" down into every day baseball.

Here, Schwarz starts with the guy who invented baseball statistics, Henry Chadwick. He then leads us through decades of baseball theory, the development of baseball cards, Strat-O-Matic and Rotisserie (fantasy) baseball, computers, SABR, baseball reporters, fans, players, politics, coaches, the Internet and a whole host of wacky baseball enthusiasts who become hopelessly addicted to the world of baseball stats. Roth, Cook, Dewan, James, Podesta, Evans, Beane...

And this in less than 300 pages. This is nothing short of amazing.
While I raced through this book, I thought of two close friends of mine.

One, a man of about 60, who on occasion has waxed rhapsodically about the box score.

How he loved to simply peruse the newspaper and consider each game in it's two-inch square recapitulation...HE belongs in this book.

Another, a guy my age (41), shared my pre-adolescent love for baseball by going to Dodger games, watching the All-Star games together, playing Little League and collecting baseball cards. He continued on with his fascination by playing Strat-O-Matic, high school ball, and getting involved with Rotisserie leagues where I did not. HE belongs in this book.

Now that I think about it...they both already are in this book. These are the guys who fill every paragraph of this tome.

Baseball isn't just "baseball."

To those who do not "get it", that statement is simply moronic; to the rest of us, it makes all the sense in the world.

Superb
By Michael L. Slavin
This book traces the evolution of baseball statistics as well as the fight to have accurate historical records. We go back to pioneers such as Henry Chadwick,Ernie Lanigan,John Heydler, the Elias brothers,George Lindsey,Earnshaw Cook,Elton Mills, Seymour Siwoff to the more modern figures such as David Neft,Bill James, John Thorn, and Pete Palmer. Good space is devoted to Allan Roth who was the first statistician employed by a team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, back in 1947 till the early 50's. The tremendous influence exerted to force modern accurate record keeping by project scoresheet, retrosheet and sabr over the years is duly noted. Today, many baseball executives who were first exposed to strategy and statistics thru the realistic dice and card games produced by APBA and Strat-O-Matic are now in decision making positions. Currently we even have computer games like Diamond-Mind which give accurate simulations as well as keeping sophisticated, comprehensive records for player and league statistics in a data base that updates after every play. I found this to be a great book about numbers. And, actually I surprisingly didn't find it to be boring at all. In fact I found it to be a fascinating read.

Inside the numbers
By R. J. Marsella
This book is an absolute delight to read for the baseball fan regardless of how many histories of the game you've already read. Alan Schwarz has delivered a perfect blend of Baseball history and the evolution of statistics that we today take for granted as being integral to the game. In this book we learn that wasn't necessarily always true and Schwarz takes us inside the development and the arguments surrounding the relevance of various stats. At the same time the characters involved both in the statistical sense and in the game itself are colorfully described.

This was a wonderful book that entertained and educated on a subject that legions of baseball fans are absorbed in every day. The stats and their development are weaved into the history of baseball creating a unique historical view of the game we love.

All Things Bright and Beautiful (All Creatures Great and Small), by James Herriot

"A very warm, very engaging read. . . . The reader falls totally under his spell."
--Associated Press

The second volume in the multimillion copy bestselling series

Millions of readers have delighted in the wonderful storytelling and everyday miracles of James Herriot in the over thirty years since his delightful animal stories were first introduced to the world.

Now in a new edition for the first time in a decade, All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants---both two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine out as we laugh, cry, and delight in his portraits of his many, varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

"Humor, realism, sensitivity, earthiness; animals comic and tragic; and people droll, pathetic, courageous, eccentric---all of whom he views with the same gentle compassion and a lively sense of the sad, the ridiculous, and the admirable."

“James Herriot has served up another warm, witty, wonderful book in All Things Bright and Beautiful.” ―The Indianapolis News

“It is impossible to speak of this second book without thinking strongly of the first. For it is truly a repeated 'miracle' as All Creatures Great and Small was described. Whatever joy one found in the first is in the second, only even more joyous; whatever laughter rippled from the throat in the reading of the first, finds even greater gusto in this one. It is funny, wry, simple in its story but as deep and perceptive of life's truths as the superlative sensitivity of the writer and his talent can make it. Best seller list, look out!” ―The Hartford Courant

About the Author

James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.

All Creatures Great and Small
By bookworm
I want to warn all Herriot devotees that in buying the omnibus editions they are NOT getting all the stories! For example in Jim's courtship of Helen, the episode of the Daffodil Ball is omitted. Let me demonstrate. 'In Let Sleeping Vets Lie' chapter twenty three begins:

"After the night of the Daffodil Ball I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening."

However in the omnibus edition we have:

"After the night at the cinema with Helen I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening"

How dare they do this? I am extremely annoyed to have spent my money on these omnibus editions. I will now have to go to all lengths to get the original books which Amazon will not ship to New Zealand.

The American publishers think they know better than James Herriot how his stories should unfold. They are wrong.

Just as wonderful as ever
By LeeAnn Bonds
This story is aging nicely. I read it again recently, many many years after reading it as a teen, and its charm is undiminished. Gentle, noble, gory and yucky in spots, displaying a deep love for the area and its people, and even including a sweet love story, this tale of a young veterinarian starting out in Yorkshire, England in the 1930's is well worth a read.

Fell in Love with a Band: The Story of The White Stripes, by Chris Handyside

With only two members and no bass player the White Stripes certainly seemed like the ultimate makeshift band. So how is it that this enigmatic couple―who publicize themselves as brother and sister though official documents say they're ex-husband-and-wife―became a multi-platinum musical sensation? From their early days as the darlings of Detroit rock scene to their current status as MTV celebs, they've defied expectations every step of the way. How did it happen that the simple idea of staying true to a lo-fi, blues-based sound became a revolutionary idea in the age digital conformity and complex studio production?

Fell in Love with a Band: The Story of the White Stripes is the first biography by a Detroit journalist who has followed their career since the group's inception in 1997. From Meg White's novice attempts at banging the drums to their current incarnation as the face of indie rock. With never before seen photos and exclusive interviews with members of Detroit bands like Blanche and The Von Bondies, Fell in Love with a Band gets to the heart of this enigmatic rock band and for the first time tells the real story of their rise to fame and the power behind their sound.

From Publishers Weekly
In 2002, a year in which the charts were dominated by the likes of Nelly and Nickelback, the White Stripes’ third full-length album, White Blood Cells, was hailed as an instant classic. A noisy salvo that would prompt legions of critics to search for synonyms for "stripped-down" and "bluesy garage rock," it also propelled the White Stripes from the clubs of Detroit into the homes of MTV viewers. Now, two short years later, comes this reverent biography, thick with stories told by Detroit regulars who observed the Stripes’ development firsthand. True devotees will enjoy Handyside’s recounting of Jack White’s boyhood, Meg White’s high school years, the duo’s early married life, divorce and subsequent sibling mythology. At times, however, the book’s forced back-porch tone grates, as do its detours into rock critic caricature ("pub rock choogle" for example). So much of the book is narrated by the Stripes’ friends, co-workers and former bandmates that the absence of Meg and Jack’s firsthand voices becomes noticeable. Still, for those with a serious interest in the White Stripes and their burgeoning legend, this volume will be part of the true completist’s collection.

From the Inside Flap

The White Stripes-with their bold red and white peppermint aesthetic and milkfed pale good looks-don't look like just another garage band. And with only two members and no bass player, they certainly seemed like the ultimate makeshift band. But instead this dynamic duo have come embody the DIY spirit of indie rock. How is it that this enigmatic couple-they refer to one another as brother and sister yet official documents say they're ex-husband-and-wife-became a multi-platinum musical sensation? From their early days as the darlings of the fertile Detroit rock scene to their current status as crush-worthy MTV-era celebrities, they've defied expectations every step of the way. How did it happen that the simple idea of staying true to a lo-fi, blues-based sound become a revolutionary notion in the age digital conformity and complex studio production? Maybe it's their unique style-wearing only red and white where ever they appear. Maybe they were just a breath of fresh-air, injecting pop music with the dose of rock it needed at exactly the right time. Whatever it is, there is no doubt that the White Stripes are a bonafide music sensation.

Fell In Love With a Band: The Story of the White Stripes is the first biography by a Detroit journalist who has followed the career of the Detroit based group since their inception in 1997. From Meg White's first novice attempts at banging the drums to their current incarnation as the face of indie rock. With never before seen photos and exclusive interviews with members of Detroit bands like Blanche, The Von Bondies and other people close to the Whites, Fell In Love With a Band gets to the heart of this enigmatic rock band and for the first time tells the real story of their rise to fame and the power behind their sound.

The White Stripes become colorful.
By NeuronPetkowski
I knew nothing of the Stripes. Never heard a note. But I was fortunate to get "turned on" and tuned in. Given Jack's controlling nature, "Fell In Love with the Band" is a great primer of their birth and existence. Author Chris Handyside is "there" and writes with enthusiasm and realism of the Detroit rock scene that made me feel as if I were in the small, makeshift recording studio the Stripes had set up in their home, setting up a mic stand. I've fallen in love with the Stripes and this book made it unconditional...

TOTAL POTBOILER

Fans of the White Stripes will undoubtedly find this interesting but it seems to have been written mainly to cash in on their current popularity and is genuinely one of the most poorly written books I've ever read: syntax and word-usage errors abound and there doesn't appear to have been an editor anywhere in sight. It reads like it was thrown together as quickly as possible and the author clearly had no direct contact with the band as all quotes come from second-hand sources. Pretty disappointing and it's hard to believe that the author is a professional writer: I'd be embarrassed to have something like this published.

Fell In Love With the Book as well
By lovendestroy
For any fan of the White Stripes this book should be a got-to-have item. Handyside is a wonderful storyteller of sorts, keeping the history of the White Stripes both in fairytale, and nonfiction at the same time. Not all secrets are revealed but any true fan of this band knows that their mystery is part of the attraction. But the parts that are revealed are just as good to know as to not know the hidden sections of their past. Very wonderful read. 5/5

"Picking up where Michael Lewis left off in Moneyball, he addresses the central questions of risk, reward, and value---on the field and off---and reveals what it takes to win."
---John Thorn, editor of Total Baseball

Die-hard fanatics will enjoy this comprehensive collection of groundbreaking baseball strategies, analyses, statistics, and studies

This unique approach to understanding the "tried and true" methodologies of the game of baseball examines conventional elements like the steal, hit and run, and line-up construction. The Book on The Book offers an exciting critique of baseball by placing an actual dollar value on player performance and rating managers based on their on-field moves to determine who are the smartest tacticians.

No corner of the ballpark is left unturned as author Bill Felber explores the various methods of team-building, on-field values of players, the role and influence of the general manager in team success, and the importance of park effects. In the vein of the late Leonard Koppett and Bill James, Felber uses mathematical and statistical principles to evaluate the wisdom of standard baseball strategies. Illustrations and a refreshingly engaging style make The Book on The Book the new textbook of baseball analysis.

"Full-blown fanatics will probably read the book straight through, but casual fans will find plenty of reward simply browsing through selected chapters, such as ‘The Decline and Fall of the Starting Pitcher,' ‘Highly Paid Irrelevance,' and ‘Rating the General Managers.' "
---BookPage

"Well thought out and soundly based, this book could be used as a text for most current teams, who should be trying to keep up with those few enlightened ones that are using logic rather than guesswork and hope."
---Pete Palmer, coeditor of The ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia and coauthor of The Hidden Game of Baseball

"Baseball's ‘Book'---the ever-expanding cloud of common wisdom about how the game should be played---has resisted challenge in part because it is unwritten. Ever since baseball began, experts have not been reading from the same page, let alone the same book. But now Bill Felber comes along to poke holes in the clouds and let some sunshine in."

Good Concept; Poor Execution
By Brian A. Powell
A disappointing purchase, this cannot be the last word on the subject. The book is a pretty dry read. Bill James has printed similar types of essays in various books in a much more lively and entertaining style. Also, some of the methods used and assumptions made are very questionable. (I am an MBA with over 20 years experience in compiling and using statistical data.) Felber's book can only be recommended to the really hardcore fan who is willing to wade through a lot of really boring prose.

I have to disagree with the other reviewers
By Bruce R. Gilson
I first looked at the reviews of this book after I'd already ordered it. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews first; their uniformly negative ratings might have put me off getting the book. I disagree strongly with these evaluations.

The book didn't seem that tedious to me; perhaps the reviewers were looking for something different from what the author was trying to do. The author is trying to present his conclusions on baseball strategy, not just as it needs to be used by players, but also by managers and by front-office people who might decide who should be signed and how much they should be paid. This latter part hasn't been addressed by anyone else that I know.

Some of his conclusions on on-the-field strategy may be identical to conclusions already reached by such baseball analysts as Pete Palmer. This doesn't make it less valuable that he enunciate them and give his reasoning. And some of his conclusions are new, or contrary to what other analysts have decided. That's why you want to read other books, not just this one, and come to your own conclusions.

One of the other reviewers seems to think everything Felber states is obvious. I think that some things are -- it is certainly more likely that you will strike out if you already have two strikes against you than if the count is 2-1. But what Felber is trying to do is quantify the chances, so that one can come up with a strategy for swinging/taking, and the very fact that his conclusions run counter than the usual strategies certainly means that managers don't think his conclusions are obvious.

My take on this book is that it is a valuable addition to my library, unlike the other reviews' ratings, though I certainly would not use this as my only book on the subject.

Very disappointing
By Michael E. Glander
I was really hoping for a fresh, new take on an old topic. But instead, it seems that "The Book on the Book" merely regurgitated the work already done by Palmer and Thorn over 20 years ago.

The author does not appear to have a background in statistics or logical thinking, and unfortunately it shows. On subjects such as the sacrifice bunt, for example, he draws conclusions without analyzing game situations or the quality of the hitter at the plate. Folks at web sites like Baseball Prospectus, Hardball Times and Baseball Analysts have covered this topic in much more extensive detail, thus delivering more meaningful conclusions.

Where Hell Freezes Over: A Story of Amazing Bravery and Survival, by David A. Kearns

At the tail end of 1946, the United States navy sent an expedition into the stark cold of Antarctica to photograph the terrain from the air and lay claim to the huge continent at the bottom of the globe. Many of the navy's men on the expedition were fresh from service in the recently ended World War II. This is the story of nine of those men, betrayed by an enemy of another kind.

As their plane flew above that desolate continent, the weather threw a "whiteout" - a combination of a slanting sheet of ice on the land and low clouds that make it seem the air ahead is clear when it is not. The blinded plane slammed into a mountainside and exploded. Three men were killed; others were injured, most of them seriously. Their only shelter was the badly damaged fuselage. They had a food supply intended for a few-days trip, and no way to communicate with their rescuers.

For thirteen days the men waited for discovery - or death. Even when they made contact with another seaplane, which led them from the air, they had to struggle, wounded as they were, several miles through blizzard winds, snow, and ice to reach safety.

David A. Kearns is the son of Bill Kearns, the pilot who was at the controls when George 1 crashed. He embarks on this harrowing tale fueled by extensive research, including interviews with survivors and their families. With a compelling narrative drive and a lot of heart, Kearns trumpets this breathtaking survival story as a shining moment in 20th century American history.

Dramatic story reminds us of unfinished business
By George Ricker
In combat it's said no plan survives contact with the enemy.

For the men of the George 1, many of them combat veterans from the recently ended Second World War, contact with a different kind of enemy killed three of their crew and threatened the lives of all of them when their seaplane crashed in Antarctica.

David Kearns' book is not the first telling of this survival story, but it may well be the most dramatic. As the son of one of the surviving crew members, naval aviator Bill Kearns--who was twenty-two at the time, the author had unique access to the members of that ill-fated mission who are still alive. His story is rich in detail, and those details are revealed in a narrative that is compelling.

I've been meaning to write this review for a while. I bought the book when it was first released. So I won't rehash what has already been said about it. If you like survival stories, you will enjoy this one.

Frankly, the most surprising thing to me about "Where Hell Freezes Over" is that no Hollywood producer has snapped up the movie rights yet.

For America has some unfinished business that would practically guarantee the film's success.

The remains of three Americans were left behind in that frozen world, trapped by fate and their own bad luck. I can see a movie producer underwriting an expedition--I'm sure the Navy would be interested in helping--to bring them home. Imagine the scenes: the opening shot of the wing still buried deep in the ice, the names barely visible; the narrative of the crash and those desperate days on the ice, interspersed with film of the recovery effort; the rescue of the survivors, and finally a memorial service with any of the surviving members of the crew and their descendants as Lopez, Hendersin and Williams are returned to their homeland one last time.

Read the book to understand.

This recounting of the crash of the George 1 is written with candor and passion. It's a difficult thing for any son to write a book about his father. David Kearns has met the challenge admirably.

Wonderful book for history buffs!
By Armchair Interviews
In the days after World War II Admiral Robert E. Byrd, was able to convince the United State Government that the frozen continent of Antarctica was of important and possible strategic value to the country.

Operation Highjump was conceived, ships were detailed and sailors were assigned to undertake the mission: To photograph, map and generally explore the frozen continent at the bottom of the world, before anyone else could. At this time in history, there were really only a few reasons to do this. Exploration was on that list but it does not appear to be the primary motivator for the Truman government. We were in a nuclear society, and speculation had it that the Antarctic continent may contain natural resources they couldpossibly be exploited. A hidden agenda?

Where Hell Freezes Over was written by David Kearns (the youngest son of one of the survivors). It is another chilling chapter in the continuous exploration of the earths polar regions--an account of death, life and unequaled heroism, which has sifted its way into obscurity, over time.

Many of us learned in school the tales of Admiral Byrd and his Artic expeditions. We experienced the cold dry continent, learned about penguins and seals, saw icebergs and frigid waters. Never were we told about the flight of George I, a PBM flying boat, from the USS Pine Island. This plane was the first aircraft from Operation Highjump to fly over land, and through a sequence of poor visibility and slight pilot errors, crashed in the frozen snows of Antarctica.

Six of nine crewmen survived for two weeks amongst the burnt and charred hulk of their destroyed aircraft. The ingenuity of the crewmembers, the die-hard tenacity of the Pine Islands Captain, along for the ride, make this a reality adventure story that we should all remember. Unlike other historical regurgitations of historic events, Where Hell Freezes Over is told in a timeline style that feeds information to the reader at appropriate times, making it a wonderful dedication to the men of George I and Operation Highjump.

Armchair Interviews says this is a wonderful book for history buffs.

A Very Good Read of Quite a Story.
By John Matlock
In late 1946 a survey crew photographing Antarctica from the air crashed. The co-pilot Lt. (jg) William H. Kearns, Jr. was the father of the auther. After the crash, it was a truly harrowing experience. Three men were dead, others injured, there was little chance of rescue. In 1946 there was very little activity in the antarctic at all. as the elder Kearns said, "Our biggest fear, with no one else on the continent at the time, was being left alone in six million square miles of ice and snow."

Eventually the Navy got another plane landed in a lake some 12 miles from the crash site. The survivors walked, crawled, and pulled their compatriots along to reach the rescue plane. Except for the three killed in the crash, they all made it.

One minor technical complaint. The plane was a PBM-5 Mariner. At one point the author calls it a 'Ventura' which is a different plane altogether. Other than this I found the book well written and a very interesting read. But I have to say that it didn't make me want to go to Antarctica at all.

A forensic nurse. A missing sister. A city that holds its secrets closely—the new riveting suspense novel from USA Today bestselling author Eileen Dreyer

Forensic nurse Chastity Byrnes is trying to put the past behind her. It has been ten years since Chastity exposed her father for the monster he was. Ten years since she made the accusations that shattered her family and sent her into exile. Ten years since she’s seen her sister, Faith.
Now, though, Faith needs her help. Chastity gets a call from Dr. Max Stanton, the brother-in-law she never knew she had, to tell her that Faith is missing. Max begs Chastity to come to New Orleans to help him find her. And even though Faith was the one who deserted Chastity so long ago, Chastity goes.
To find her missing sister, Chastity has to battle her own demons in a city where forensics are an old boy’s club and a woman can find trouble in her sleep. She has to wade through distrust and deceit to get to the truth, whether she wants to hear it or not. She has to rediscover the sister she lost by investigating fertility clinics, the powers of St. Roch, and the mysteries of voodoo. She has to discover why women who might have helped her sister are dying.
As a hurricane threatens the vulnerable city, Chastity puts more than her life at risk as she fights to rescue her sister from the threat that stalks them both.…
A searing portrait of family secrets and betrayals, Sinners and Saints is Eileen Dreyer at the top of her game.

Compelling crime thriller with one of the most believable and interesting heroines yet
By R. Kyle
Chastity Byrne's life is going as she wants: she's a forensic nurse, got a new puppy, everything in order. Then, her ER doc mentions "Chaos Theory" and only minutes later, everything goes rapidly downhill.

She gets a desperate call from a brother in law she never knew even existed. Her sister, Faith, who'd abandoned her more than 10 years earlier at 16 is missing. Her 'new' brother in law, Dr. Max Stanton, is desperate to find his wife.

Chastity is convinced to go to New Orleans to seek out a sister she's not even sure she wants to find. She discovers pretty quickly that everyone who's given Faith any help is being killed off. Worse, there's a hurricane coming and there's only one thing that Chastity fears more than that...

Her father---who coincidentally is alive, well, and out of jail.

"Sinners and Saints" is a very well-written thriller that sinks its hooks into you and doesn't let go. Chastity Bryne is one of the strongest heroines I've ever read--despite her fears and wish not to go on. This is my first Dreyer novel and I can assure you--will not be my last.

Hard times in the Big Easy.
By E. Bukowsky
The main action in Eileen Dreyer's new thriller, "Sinners and Saints," is set in New Orleans on the eve of a hurricane. The lead character, forensic nurse Chastity Byrnes, is an emotional wreck because of past traumas that she hints at but does not spell out until later in the book. She has been seeing a therapist for a long time, takes antianxiety medication, and is terrified of drowning. However, she valiantly picks herself up from her relatively safe haven in St. Louis and answers a call for help from her brother-in-law, surgeon Max Stanton. It seems that Faith Stanton, Chastity's sister and Max's wife, has gone missing and Max asks Chastity to help find her. Chastity has been out of touch with Faith for years, but she decides that it is her duty to assist Max in any way that she can.

Max gives Chastity carte blanche to search his house and papers in an effort to garner clues about Faith's whereabouts. While in New Orleans, Chastity takes advantage of the hospitality of a fellow nurse named Kareena Boudreaux, a saucy and sexy Cajun woman with a colorful way of speaking. To get around New Orleans, Chastity hires James Guidry, a physically and emotionally scarred ex-fireman; he proves to be a handy man to have around in a crisis. Chastity contacts everyone who knew Faith and she discovers that her sister had been visiting a fertility clinic. Could the clinic somehow be connected to Faith's disappearance? Much to Chastity's chagrin, some of the people whom she interviews turn up dead, and she feels guilty for having put them in danger. Unfortunately, the New Orleans police are not much help. As the hurricane nears and threatens to flood the city, Chastity is tempted to hop on the next plane back to St. Louis before she is either swept away by the tides or murdered by a sadistic killer.

Eileen Dreyer captures the ambiance of New Orleans perfectly. She nails the "anything goes" party atmosphere, the obsession with death and cemeteries, and the feeling of imminent danger that goes with living in a place that lies below sea level. Unfortunately, this is a very talky book with dialogue that is sometimes stilted and silly (I get irritated every time Chastity calls James "Fireman" and he calls her "Nurse,") but the patois spoken by certain characters such as a psychic named Tante Edie is colorful and intriguing.

"Sinners and Saints" is a pedestrian mystery with a bunch of red herrings that do not lead anywhere. The novel drags towards the conclusion; it could easily have been trimmed by at least fifty pages with no loss of coherence. However, there are some worthwhile elements that redeem the novel somewhat. Chastity is an appealing heroine, with her mixture of fear and spunk, and it is entertaining to watch her relationship with James heat up. We grow to care about her, and we root for her to catch the murderer and overcome her fears. By far, the best reason to read "Sinners and Saints" is that it brings New Orleans to life at a time when this beautiful, historic, and unique city is struggling mightily to get back on its feet.

brilliant crime thriller
By A Customer
Just when forensic nurse Chastity O'Connor believes she has her life on track, a call from New Orleans turns her world upside down. The brother-in-law she never knew she had calls to tell her that her sister Faith is missing. Chastity hasn't seen her sister or her mother in a decade ever since they abandoned her when she was sixteen forcing her to live on the streets.

Even though she knows her sister blames her for sending their father to jail, Chastity goes to New Orleans to help in the search for her sibling who she believes disappeared when her mother died in order to escape reality. Three women associated with Faith and the fertility clinic where she was donating her eggs have been murdered all by the same killer. Chastity now fears that Faith ran because she was afraid for her life. Desperate to find her sister, she falls into a murderer's trap but with the assistance of a sexy cab driver, she might escape in time to save her sister.

The heroine is one of the most courageous characters to ever grace the pages of a novel. Despite the abuse she suffered as a child and overcoming traumatic fears, she makes the effort to save the sister who discarded her and never tried to make contact with her. The villain is hidden in plain sight and will come as quite a shock to the readers who never would have guessed the identity. Eileen Dreyer writes a brilliant crime thriller that starts off fast and never slows down until the last page is turned while also filled with excellent characterizations, realistic action scenes and terrific pacing.
