From Publishers Weekly
Noted linguist Lederer (Anguished English) has a naughty side, which, combined with his unerring archival instincts, makes this collection of wordplays a bawdily noteworthy achievement. As long as one doesn't overdose on more than two chapters at a time (as the author warns one should not), this book repeatedly rewards the open-minded. How about the "poonerism" (that's what Lederer dubs a dirty spoonerism, or juxtaposition of sounds within a word or sentence) that defines call girls as "the lays of our dives" and a bordello as a "toll-cookie house"? Or the list of limericks and the pun-filled "delectable daughter" jokes? Lederer strives to illuminate the "verbal vivacity of our vocabulary and illustrate one of the most astonishing miracles of language-the ability of two or more meanings to occupy the same space at the same time." Blending the richness of English with the seemingly endless supply of raunchy word tricks, the author takes pride in providing humorous, but never hurtful verbal wit, all in the name of fun and education. After all, "a dirty mind is a terrible thing to waste."

Charming and Delightful but not Groundbreaking
By Sondra M. Blair
A truly enjoyable book. Bought it for my 87 year old grandfather who loves wordplay and he has gotten quite a kick out of it. I had to read over it myself before giving it to gramps, and had a lot of fun doing so. However, as another reviewer mentioned, about half of the stuff is not new. So if you're an aficionado you might get a bit bored. I liked re-reading it but I can see how some might be annoyed.

Only weakness: you've probably heard half of the stuff in here before
By Brian Connors
Let's be honest: Lederer is the man when it comes to wordplay jokes, has been for years. That said, I'm not sure why this book caught me by surprise -- after all, dirty puns are puns too, however awful they are.

I'd be willing to wager at least half of the items in this book have passed through your email inbox at one time or another. The book is sillier than it is sexy, and that's just fine.

Good, Clean Dirty Fun from the Original Verbivore
By John Williamson
I really do like Richard Lederer's The Cunning Linguist: Ribald Riddles, Lascivious Limericks, Carnal Corn, and Other Good, Clean Dirty Fun. I like it well enough that I'm now on my third copy of this book since it was released in 2003, since one "disappeared" and another was loaned. It's not the author's best book, but this witty offering from the original verbivore is right up there with the rest of his collective works.

While attending Haverford College as a pre-med student years ago, Lederer soon discovered that he was more interested in language, and he switched his major to English (a good things for all of us). Going on to Harvard Law School, he discovered that he was even more interested in the language itself than in the law cases which he was reading. He switched to a Master of Arts and Teaching program at Harvard, and that lead to a teaching career in Concord, New Hampshire.

Lederer earned a Ph.D in English and Linguistics at the University of New Hampshire, and was inspired to write books on language, starting with Anguished English: An Anthology of Accidental Assaults Upon Our Language. This was followed by More Anguished English, and then by Fractured English.

The popularity of these book and and the subsequent titles motivated him to leave his teaching position and pursue further writing and speaking opportunities... and we gained from reading his books on word play, language bloopers, puns and his frequent use of the oxymoron. Dr. Lederer is known as a "verbivore," a word that he coined in the 1980s. His interests include pointing out common grammatical errors and fallacies, uncovering word origins, and exploring palindromes, anagrams, and other forms of recreational wordplay.

Lederer shows us the naughtier side of wordplay in The Cunning Linguist. Must admit that we've all probably heard many of the entries here, either by e-mail, fax or by word. That doesn't make them any less funny, or often punny. At least now we have hundreds of pages of clever grown-up jokes, limericks and adults-only puns in a single volume. There are enough examples that can't be posted here, but being a computer geek, have always enjoyed the entry entitled "Field Replaceable Mouse Balls" that appears on page 100, and refers to an IBM internal memo from the '90s:

"Mouse balls are now available as a field-replaceable unit. If a mouse fails to operate, or should perform erratically, it may be in need of a ball replacement. Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel.

Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon manufacturer of the mouse.

Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop-off method, and domestic balls replaced using the twist-off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge. Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately.

It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction, and that any customer missing his balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items."

As author Lederer says, The Cunning Linguist is "300 pages of good, clean, dirty word play for appreciative punographers." I fully agree.

The Living Great Lakes: Searching for the Heart of the Inland Seas, by Jerry Dennis

If fresh water is to be treasured, the Great Lakes are the mother lode. No bodies of water can compare to them. One of them, Superior, is the largest lake on earth, and the five lakes together contain a fifth of the world's supply of standing fresh water. Their ten thousand miles of shoreline bound eight states and a Canadian province and are longer than the entire Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States. Their surface area of 95,000 square miles is greater than New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island combined. People who have never visited them -- who have never seen a squall roar across Superior or the horizon stretch unbroken across Michigan or Huron -- have no idea how big they are. They are so vast that they dominate much of the geography, climate, and history of North America. In one way or another, they affect the lives of tens of millions of people.

The Living Great Lakes is the most complete book ever written about the history, nature, and science of these remarkable lakes at the heart of North America. From the geological forces that formed them to the industrial atrocities that nearly destroyed them, to the greatest environmental success stories of our time, the lakes are portrayed in all their complexity. The book, however, is much more than just history. It is also the story of the lakes as told by biologists, fishermen, sailors, and others whom the author grew to know while traveling with them on boats and hiking with them on beaches and islands.

The book is also the story of a personal journey. It is the narrative of a six-week voyage through the lakes and beyond as a crewmember on a tallmasted schooner, and a memoir of a lifetime spent on and near the lakes. Through storms and fog, on remote shores and city waterfronts, the author explores the five Great Lakes in all seasons and moods and discovers that they and their connecting waters -- including the Erie Canal, the Hudson River, and the East Coast from New York to Maine -- offer a surprising and bountiful view of America. The result is a meditation on nature and our place in the world, a discussion and cautionary tale about the future of water resources, and a celebration of a place that is both fragile and robust, diverse, rich in history and wildlife, often misunderstood, and worthy of our attention.

From Publishers Weekly
In his newest book, Dennis (From a Wooden Canoe) offers an engrossing description of being a crew member on the schooner Malabar on a six-week trip through the waters of Lakes Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. Capt. Hajo Knuttel and other crew members such as Tim, the ship's creative cook, spring to life in this modern adventure tale. Dennis weaves anecdotes from his childhood, such as a family-fishing trip on Lake Michigan, together with informed commentary on the natural history of the lakes and the people who live there as well as evocative descriptions of the enchanting view of the forests along Lake Superior from the schooner. His narrative is a continual reminder of the dangers inherent in navigating the waters of these magnificent lakes as he details their current condition; he explains that in the 1970s, Lake Erie's waters were saved from an ecological disaster by a public outcry, yet other waters are still in danger from commercial dumping. But all does not go smoothly for the Malabar; Dennis's narrative takes on an air of adventure when, toward the end of the trip, the Malabar and its crew encounter a terrifying storm. From Booklist
Dennis surveys the Inland Seas through the viewpoint of his lake-faring rambles in three different vessels: schooner, racing yacht, and voyageur canoe. As he passes the numerous spectacular sights the Great Lakes afford sailors, Dennis recalls their associated history in a vibrant blend of personal observation and geological, historical, and environmental anecdote. The main focus here is a schooner trip in 2000 from Grand Traverse Bay to Maine (via the Erie Canal). As the Malabar negotiates the treacherous Straits of Mackinac, Dennis not only covers the French missions, British forts, and innumerable shipwrecks in this storied area but also recollects his experience in the annual Chicago-to-Mackinac yacht race. Working in a separate, French fur-trapper style canoeing adventure on Lake Superior, Dennis touches on all five lakes in this compendium, endowing his chronicle with a breadth that makes it a fine introduction to the lakes' ecology. savvily blending the factual with the picaresque." -- Kirkus Reviews

the intentionally crafted essay—we know what it’s like to learn from a colleague whose body of work ...
By Katey Schultz
[I had the honor of introducing Jerry after studying his work.]

Jerry Dennis Intro

Those of us who identify as book-lovers, those of us who lived inside stories throughout our childhoods—we know the work of a living legend when we encounter it on the page. Similarly, those of us who have built careers out of the well-shaped sentence, the fully-formed paragraph, the intentionally crafted essay—we know what it’s like to learn from a colleague whose body of work represents a deeply significant contribution.

Today’s Keynote Speaker, Jerry Dennis, is that kind of writer. He has given us work that ignites the imagination, while also infusing it with facts. Woven into his book The Living Great Lakes, which is part memoir, part research, part adventure—the facts alone don’t invite story, but they do stay with us long after the final page has been turned—the story that’s there is, indeed, a page-turner. There’s an important kind of intentionality to that approach. We learn as we go along, but we hardly notice that we’re learning.

Whether reading a brief personal essay Jerry published 20 years ago, or a new blog post published last month, his careful focus, smart craft, and generosity of spirit that infuse the page instill readers with a sense of possibility. “You have to open yourself to natural spectacle,” Jerry writes in The River Home. “Like a child, you have to be empty of expectation, have to possess eyes that see and ears that hear. It takes practice, like anything. Sometimes you can be surprised.”

Jerry’s writing gives us those eyes and ears, as well as surprise. His place-based work, infused with facts and the imagination, adds up to what I call slow and steady eco-activism. The result is body of work that has brought the Great Lakes Region to life for thousands of readers, above and beyond its residents. His work helps people find a way into caring, into breathing fresh air, and into appreciation of natural resources—even if they aren’t looking for it. Even if they’ve never caught a fish in their lives. Even if they’ve never seen a Great Lake.

If you’re not familiar with his work, I want you to know that Jerry is an internationally acclaimed author who has earned his living as a freelance writer since 1986. His books, including A Walk in the Animal Kingdom, The Living Great Lakes, The Windward Shore, and A Place on the Water, have won numerous awards, have been translated into seven languages, have appeared on national bestseller lists, and are required reading in many universities and colleges. His essays, poems and short fiction have appeared in more than 100 publications, including The New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, American Way, Michigan Quarterly Review, PANK, and Mid-American Review.

But his bio wasn’t always so chalk-full, and his life—as much as we may like to romanticize the life of the writer—is just as busy, exciting, boring, overbooked, full of love, full of confusion, muddled by injustice, and full of uncertainty as the rest of ours.

So what can we learn? After thirty years of making a living as a writer, I won’t go so far as to say that Jerry’s seen it all, but I will tell you that I invited him to be today’s Keynote Speaker with great confidence that he’s not going to sugar-coat what he has to tell us. He’s seen changes in the publishing industry that impact everyone in this room, and many of those changes, he’s seen from more than one angle.

I’m as eager as you are to learn more, and while he won’t be reading from his published work today, I hope you’ll take the hard facts he’s going to share during this presentation and water them with a healthy dose of Great Lakes imagination by reading his books when we’re done.

Very good book, full of information!
By tak
An pretty amazing book, FULL of information about the Great Lakes-- geological, historical, present day stats. The writing is beautiful but be warned it is very dense! With so much info, it's overwhelming at times and slow going. Still, one of the best books I've come across on the Great Lakes and a must for anyone really interested in learning about this natural wonder.

The Great Lakes Truly are a Treasure
By K. Roth
This book captures the heart of the Great Lakes and all the beauty that is found in and around them. It gives a wonderful detail of the geologic history of the lakes and the landscape around them. The author has a true appreciation for these living lakes and evokes that throughout his writing. If you live around the Great Lakes region, you will gain a new appreciation for how lucky we are to be by them and a new sense of desire to protect them. I used excerpts from this book to teach a high school earth science class when studying the hydrosphere and meterology. I recommend this book to any naturalist, Great Lakes region residence, or for anyone who wants to know why the largest source of fresh water on the planet is worth saving and preserving.

There is a charm and freshness to this first novel, whose 14-year-old protagonist, Charlotte, speaks of her mother as Mrs. Flax and whose impulse toward martyrdom is enfeebled by erotic desire. Charlotte may censure her mother's bedroom generosity, but she is doubly severe with her own, flagellating her body and emulating the nuns in the convent near her house, one of 18 she's inhabited in her short life. Mrs. Flax, whose promiscuity extends to her surroundings, has driven Charlotte and her little sister Kate all over the country looking for a place that will not pall;this time, though, the children clamor to stay. Charlotte is determined to wait there until her unknown fatherwhose shoes she keeps on her shelf as a kind of sacramentpays the visit her mother is always forecasting. Six-year-old Kate, daughter of a frustrated Olympic swimmer who disappeared before her birth, spends most of her time in the pool or the bathtub, and wants to stay put until she feels like a "human bean" again. Although both of their characters are sharply etched and recognizable, Kate and Charlotte make such strong demands upon the reader's affection that scenes in which only one of them appears seem incomplete.

"This is a really funny book about people trying to find something to hang onto in a world that keeps shifting under their feet. Dann Delivers
By S. Lee
As Mrs. Flax says, Death is "dwelling on the past, or staying in one place for too long." Which leads me to wonder if this led to the brevity of this book. Even though this is a short offering, there is not a spare word, or excessive scene through out the book. It is a perfect read, and full of wit, charm and plenty of life lessons for anybody.
Reading along with Charlotte Flax's periodical cries for stability and divine direction, it is hard not to share her experiences as she forges her way in a new town in Massachusetts. Through her alienation from her mother, her peers, her first love, and even God, in whom she is devoutly committed (although sometimes in a comical way), she is determined to establish normalcy in her life.
It isn't long until everything seems to be going alright, but with a shocking turn of events with her sister Kate, and her mother threatening to pack up the car again, Charlotte is forced to make her stand, and discover what growing up is all about.
I loved this book. Small, but packs a big punch. I only wish Dann could appease her readers frequent appetites for more stories. With only two books available, you will doubtless cherish every word.

Growing Up I Loved This Odd Little Novel
By Dai-keag-ity
Mermaids meant a lot to me once upon a time. When things built up and I needed to escape the pressures of school and life, I'd melt into this friendly little novel about the recent past and some likable people who lived there. I identified with Charlotte Flax (and a little with Mrs. Flax, too). Charlotte and I were both teenagers who read a lot about the lives of the saints (me in school, Charlotte, who is Jewish, of her own volition) we both loved to drive, even though we weren't old enough to have licenses yet, and we both had young, beautiful mothers who frequently drove us crazy.

The whole concept of this novel was beyond cool, too, to my teenaged mind. It was a glorious fantasy. Moving to a brand new place, the beautiful coast of New England, fresh start, being boy crazy and meeting the most awesome man of your dreams practically next door to you, finding out who you are... It was great.

In Mermaids, the Flax family, colorful, saint-obsessed Charlotte, fourteen, Kate, nine, who plans to swim the English Channel, and their mother, the smoking-hot, flighty Rachael (who had Charlotte when she was about sixteen) settle into the tiny Massachusetts town of Grove, in the summer of 1963. Mrs. Flax, as Charlotte calls her mother, has lived by any standards an interesting life, and has relocated her daughters eighteen times in the past fourteen years. Charlotte's reaction to this constant mobility has been to retreat into a semi-fantasy world of Catholic saints. In fact Charlotte, unlike me at that age (who lived in sheer horror of the thought) plans on being a nun, despite the fact she's Jewish. As Charlotte and her family settle into Grove, the book introduces a nice cast of characters, like Lou Lanksy, the good-natured shoe salesman who quickly gets a major crush on Mrs. Flax; the Mother Superior of the local convent, who develops a friendship with Charlotte and confides some very surprising things to her; and above all others, Joey, the young caretaker of the nearby nunnery, for whom Charlotte falls head over heels into obsessive, crushy--but to her very real--love.

This book tells the story of a goofy, remarkable, sometimes sad fourteen-year-old and the year in which her life (and against the backdrop of the Kennedy assassination the nation itself) changes dramatically. This is a story about love, about growing up, about facing fears and about gaining confidence. It's a lovely, happy, quirky, funny chick-flick of a tale that somehow caught a spark in me back in the day. I'll always treasure Mermaids and hope others do too.

New Mercies, by Sandra Dallas

Natchez, Mississippi, in 1933 is a place suspended in time. The silver and china is still dented and cracked from Yankee invaders. And the houses have names...and memories. Nora Bondurant is running away--from her husband's death, from his secrets, and from the ghosts that dog her every step. When she receives a telegram informing her that she has an inheritance, Nora suddenly has somewhere to run to: a house named Avoca in Natchez, Mississippi. Now, she’s learning that the lure of Natchez runs deep, and that, along with Avoca, she’s inherited a mystery. Nora's aunt Amalia Bondurant was killed in a murder/suicide, and the locals are saying nothing more--except in hushed, honeyed tones. As Nora becomes more and more enmeshed in the community and in her family’s history, she learns surprising things about the life and death of her aunt: kinship isn't always what it seems, loyalty can be as fierce as blood relations, and every day we are given new mercies to heal the pain of loss and love.

From Booklist
An unexpected inheritance comes with family secrets, a crumbling plantation, and emotional solace for heiress Nora Bondurant, who arrives in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1933, to settle her heretofore-unknown aunt's estate. The feisty, practical Denverite is alternately aghast and charmed with the thoroughly quirky southern community as townsfolk hint politely at the murder-suicide of Aunt Amalia (known as the "goat lady") and the neighboring plantation owner, a spurned beau. To escape a painful divorce, Nora investigates her newfound family's history and learns some unpleasant home truths, but the whole truth lies with the family's freed slaves, Aunt Polly and Ezra, who won't say a word against their beloved former mistress. Old fans will recognize Dallas' trademark leisurely pace in a new setting, a gothic-tinted South instead of the wide-open Midwest, and be pleasantly surprised. The languid pacing will not keep readers from eagerly turning pages to discover why Amalia was murdered and the reasons behind Nora's failed marriage. Dallas has crafted a honey-and-Spanish-moss-tinged tale certain to please gentle fiction readers who don't mind a little mystery. Kaite Mediatore

Captures the essence of the times
By shirley lieb
While I did have some trouble getting into this book, I decided that it was because I was reading it in ten or twenty page segments. It is much better read in several long sittings. That aside, I can honestly say that I was quickly drawn into the mysteries of Avoca.

Dallas captures the language, the customs, the dress, everything about the depression era 30's with the understanding of a person who had lived then. So clearly, she has done her homework.

I loved Aunt Polly. She is a woman filled with wisdom and many talents. I believe that she had a fondness for Nora that she was not to willing to show too quickly. She probably knew more about Nora, than Nora knew about herself, just by her instincts.

The situation between Nora and her husband and how that all ended came as no surprise. Reading between the lines, it was all rather predictable. Still and all it was tragic.

By the time Nora has been accepted by the main players as a member of "old Natchez" and the mystery has been solved, the book ends on a very upbeat note, in a room as bright and white as Avoca was dark and dreary in the beginning.

This book was one of the most boring stories I've ever read. How an author can write Fallen Women and, and Bride's House, (excellent stories) to this book, blows my mind.

Southern gothic meets film noir
By Gotta Read!
Dallas is at the top of her game with this novel. The suspense she creates is superb, and this book makes for delicious reading. In a break from her previous novels, she's moved this tale out of the 19th century, but the past can't be forgotten in this tale of a Southern family and the remnants of a society still clinging to the values found in the Old South. This one successfully made its way around my circle of reading friends.

From Publishers Weekly
Klauer's diet plan isn't revolutionary, but her approach is noteworthy. The author, a research fellow at St. Luke's–Roosevelt Hospital with a practice on Park Avenue, has a clientele comprising primarily successful businessmen and -women, "ladies who lunch" and celebrities—people with the drive to do whatever it takes to succeed, in the boardroom, in social circles or on the gym floor. They understand and practice Klauer's "nonnegotiables": daily exercise, the consumption of protein and calcium, the management of food cravings and the elimination of processed food. Although some readers won't be able to follow all of Klauer's advice—a personal trainer isn't within everyone's budget, nor can everyone choose the healthy Manhattan chain Better Burger over McDonald's—but there are many useful suggestions here. Try grilled shrimp over lentils with a cup of steamed broccoli for dinner, with a side of mineral water, and when traveling, beware the hotel minibar (the Park Avenue mindset creeps in with such lines as "better groups, such as... the Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons, allow special meal requests that can be preordered"). Sticking to Klauer's strict regimen isn't easy, but neither is life on Park Avenue.

Park Avenue Diet Doctor Dishes on Weight Loss!
By Lee Mellott
Jana Klauer an MD specializing in weight control with a private practise in the ritzy Park Avenue area of New York has penned a weight loss book describing how she helps her rich patients lose weight. She describes her diet as "the key to how successful, rich and busy modern men and women get it off and keep it off."

The title to the book sounded a bit gimmicky so I was surprised as I read the book to read alot of solid information. She stresses the importance of daily exercise, how protein can help suppress appetite, why calcium can increase your metabolism, how prescription drugs can cause weight gain and more. There is a lot of good information in this book and Dr. Klauer spells it out; weightloss takes effort and determination. She also includes a simple method to help with cravings that can really come in handy. (Set a stopwatch for 15 minutes, drink water, eat protein to normalize your blood sugar and wait it out.)

But despite the excellent information Klauer shares, the bottomline is "How The Rich Get Thin" is a high protein, low carb diet that will be very difficult to stay on. There are two phases. Phase 1 is the "Get It Done Phase". You follow this phase till you are within 5 pounds of your goal weight. Typical day: Breakfast: 2 omega 3 eggs with 1 ounce of low fat cheese and 1/2 cup of berries, coffee or tea. Midmorning: A cup of green tea. Lunch: A large mesclun salad with 4 grilled shrimp and lemon juice, tea, water. Afternoon snack: Caprese Salad, water, green tea. Dinner: Mixed green salad with 2oz Parmesan cheese and lemon juice, 4-5 oz red snapper, steamed asparagus, yogurt with cinnamon for desert. Phase 2 maintenance adds in some carbs but not many.
Not a lot of food. And you are also expected to exercise for 1 hour each day. My guess is anyone who can follow this plan is either already thin or will likely regain any weight they lose from following it. It's simply too restrictive.

Dr. Klauer intersperses her text with little quips and Park Avenue tales..these range from interesting to pretty silly.
For example she tells how embarrased one of her patients, Amber, was when she told her date to order dinner for her and then left to use the restroom when he ordered. When she returned she complimented him on his choice of the salmon only to be told it was not salmon but was a very rare, expensive wild Arctic char fish. "Amber was mortified and for the rest of the evening said very little to avoid making any other faux pas". Seems to me that a grown women who is "mortified" by mistaking one fish for another needs a little head examination..not a weight loss doctor.
Dr.Klauer also suggests you reach for the very fine quality food items and avoid processed foods. I am fine with this but as an example she would have you reach for the "20 gram presentation of Caviar Tsar Imperial Beluga" instead of the lumpfish from a tin. When I took a peek at prices for the Imperial Beluga..well lets just say that at $175 for a 50gram serving, most of us will be sticking with Chicken of the Sea tuna.

Dr. Klauer makes the case for avoiding processed foods and also encourages you to add more calcium to your diet. She says many of her patients enjoy Viactiv calcium chews. Main ingredient in the chews, corn syrup. Second ingredient, high fructose corn syrup. Not a good choice for one avoiding faux foods.

The 268 page book includes recipes such as Lauren's Marinated Tuna, Black Soybean Salsa with Cod, Greek Lamb Meatballs with Yogurt Tahini Salad, Baked Pears with Walnuts and Figs and Yogurt Cheesecake. Her preference would be you use organic eggs, fresh herbs and spices and and whole wheat flour when called for. It should be noted that splenda is used instead of sugar in the recipes.

The back of the book lists resources including mercury levels in fish, also restaurants and shops in New York where you can purchase high quality foods and there is reference section.

Bottomline..good overall information but unreasonably strict diet for the short or long haul no matter how much money you have.

Calcium is King...
By Jennifer Hughes
I am very impressed with this book in regards to how simple it is to understand what the doctor is writing about when she is describing the human body and nutrition. Usually, I am so turned off by the medical jargon of how our bodies work and how nutrition plays a part in that...however, I was able to fully comprehend and plow through everything this author wrote (notice I did not say it was an enjoyable task...I wanted to skip forward to the diet part, but I am glad I didn't).

Now, as for the plan. The reason I gave this book only 4 stars is because the author does advocate giving up certain foods such as bread and dried pasta. Yes, this is a high-protein diet and carbs are restricted, even though the author never comes right out and says this.

The author suggests that you put forth a plan of action for losing weight, which includes exercising at least an hour per day and adhering to her minimum amount of calcium per day (note that you have to space out your consumption of calcium during the day due to our bodies natural tendency to only absorb a maximum of 500 mg at any one time...a little tidbit explained in the nutritional section, so please read it!). All processed foods are OUT. The author advises you to purge your fridge and cupboard of anything processed and anything that has ingredients you cannot pronounce. She also advises you to throw out all dried herbs and use only fresh herbs. Costly, yes. However, according to the author, your health is worth the added expense.

All in all, this book was a great read for me and I will be incorporating the plan into my lifestyle. The author's tone is friendly, authoritative and encouraging without being too overbearing. Anyone who has read and enjoyed books on the French lifestyle (i.e. Fat Fallacy, FWDGF, etc) will find that this book fits nicely into their library - it will even put to use those yogurt machines we all purchased after reading French Women Don't Get Fat!

Whittle Down Your Waistline with Increased Calcium
By Diana Faillace Von Behren
First and foremost, despite the fad title, I love the diet proposed in Jana Klauer's "How the Rich Get Thin." Not only does it make perfect sense, but after eating on this plan for two weeks, I can successfully report that I have indeed lost weight as benchmarked by the near perfect fit of my favorite pair of `weight-testing' jeans.

After a few years of attempting the other Dr. "Klauer's" (Clower's) French diet, where slow eating small portions and no snacking supposedly add up to more pleasure and a smaller waistline, I found this Park Avenue Dr. Klauer's phase 1 diet to be flush with good choices (of course only real food prevails here-no processed foods allowed) that more than adequately satisfied both my nutritional needs and food satiety for the day. Plus, a strategy actually exists that takes into account what we know about nutrition today; instead of epitomizing the clueless American merely observing the French who apparently luck out on their eating alternatives, Klauer tells you why certain combinations will work for you and provides menus that allow you to accomplish your goal with greater understanding that hopefully will offer no-brainer, non-weight increasing options while you are in the maintenance phase.

Yes, some of the reviews have deemed this plan to be stringent and some of the food ideas exorbitantly expensive, but I think you need to judge that and the results for yourself and simply substitute less lavish food selections. A three day "jump-start" kicks off the diet with the objective of driving your metabolism into high gear while shedding some of the bloat and maintaining muscle mass. An all-important hour's worth of exercise performed before eating breakfast gets your body moving even if you are only willing or able to walk. Strictly high protein, this three days of omega-3 eggs, low-fat yogurt, low-fat cheese, canned tuna, fresh grilled or baked fish, salad, water, green tea and raw vegetables will ready your body for the longer "Get It Done" Phase 1 of the Diet.

Until you are within 5 to 7 pounds of your goal weight, Phase 1 expands the food selections found in the Jump-Start without any nutritional deprivation. A daily quotient of food includes the three basic meals with the addition of two snacks-one actually providing something more substantial than a cup of green tea. For example, breakfast consists of a complete meal -- berries, eggs and low-fat cheese, coffee or tea with low-fat milk if desired. A mesclun salad with balsamic vinaigrette and 4 grilled shrimp provides an adequate lunch followed by a mid-afternoon snack of mozzarella, basil and tomato salad. Dinner includes 4 to 5 ounces of grilled fish, served with salad and asparagus and finished with a dessert of low-fat yogurt spiked with cinnamon and Splenda. (Caveat: Forego the Splenda. The author's recommendation of Splenda as an engineered sugar substitute sets this reviewer's teeth on edge as this is a relatively new product and thereby unproven as safe.) Prior to bedtime two calcium citrate capsules insure at least 1200 mg of calcium absorption on a daily basis.

The author goes into such great length discussing the merits of including calcium in the form of dairy to each meal that at times I wondered if she was being funded by the American Dairy Association. I checked on her data with my own health care provider and yes, it seems that not only does added calcium in this format help to lower blood pressure and reduces cancer risk; it helps one dieting to lose weight on a significantly higher percentage level than one might expect.

Note that during phase 1 of the diet, one's protein choices are limited to fish, low-fat dairy and omega-3 eggs. When goal weight nears fruition, the introduction of other good food choices becomes paramount on a weekly basis. Week 1 substitutes some chicken, turkey and meat for the fish. Week 2 adds a piece of fruit to the mid-afternoon snack. Legumes make their reappearance in week 3 as do sweet potatoes in week 4. Week 5 reintroduces nuts - always a bone of contention with me as I love them so, but don't feel that they help me maintain my weight----Klauer provides a nice sidebar which explains the nuts per calories ration. During week 6 complex carbs like whole grains and breads may be included 2 to 3 times a week. A modicum of wine can be included only after achieving goal weight.

Klauer rounds out the dieting plan by including information-rich chapters on the drug-weight connection, exercise, stress relief, and anti-aging nutrition and finishes with nearly 70 pages of recipes, on-line organic food sources and Manhattan restaurant suggestions just in case you find yourself powering your way through the Big Apple.

Bottom line: Forget the title, the Park Avenue shmaltz and the suggestions to indulge in caviar at $200 an ounce. Follow the plan and constantly refer to the sidebars which will fill your head and stomach with good sense options that will keep your food choices from getting boring. Recommended to anyone who wants to lose weight using the most effective and sensible plan out there at any age.

In the fine tradition of scorched earth, take no prisoners political satire, The Three Little Pigs Buy the White House pokes fun at a certain trio of Republican politicians who are living high on the hog.

Watch out: these little pigs have no problem replacing brick with straw when it comes to your nation's security.

And don't be afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, that is, if . . . uh . . . we can find him.

Written and illustrated by celebrated Bizarro cartoonist, Dan Piraro, The Three Little Pigs Buy the White House is the perfect mockery of politics as grimy as bacon grease.

A charmingly hilarious parody
By VeggieTart
"The Three Little Pigs Buy The White House" is a tale of how the Bush team came to power and what they've done since written in the style of a children's book. The depictions of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld, down to them telling Bush how to behave whenever there is a problem, is frighteningly accurate. The depiction of Osama as a Big Bad Wolf with his Winds of Mass Destruction is unnerving. It's the news of the past three years that you didn't get on TV condensed into a brief allegory.

Fantastic, IF you are a liberal
By A Customer
I thought it was a great book-- funny, well written and a great way to begin discussing current events with my two seven year olds.
However, I am sure that all reviews will either be five stars (if the reviewer is a liberal) or one star (if the reviewer is a conservative) because it is certainly a politically charged children's book.

Hilarious
By A Customer
My kids found this on the bookshelves at a book store and begged me to buy it for them - they thought it was hilarious. We all have read it over and over and its simple truth is appropriate for all ages. I recommend it for children and adults. My kids are 11,10 and 5 and they all read it, and when my parents saw my copy they bought one for themselves.

Miracle: Bobby Allison and the Saga of the Alabama Gang, by Peter Golenbock

While you were sitting in the stands or watching at home on TV, did you ever ask yourself what's really going on behind the scenes? Take a ride on the seat next to auto-racing legend Bobby Allison and relive the dramatic saga of the Alabama Gang in this unique look at NASCAR from the inside.

Bobby Allison, who ranks third place in wins in NASCAR history, began his Grand National/Winston Cup career in 1966. After winning eighty-five races, he retired in 1988 when an accident at Pocono Raceway nearly killed him. He was severely brain injured, and it took him a full fifteen years to recover. After the accident, more tragedy struck. In 1992 his younger son, Clifford, died in a crash at the age of twenty-seven. A year later, his other son, Davey, died in a helicopter accident, and in 1994 he lost his close friend and protégé Neil Bonnet in a fatal crash. Then Bobby and his wife, Judy, separated and divorced. Through it all Bobby Allison persevered.
Today Bobby's mind is as sharp, detailed, and analytical as anyone's in sports. Bobby remembers so much, in such great detail, the stories he tells leap off the page. It's all there---the feuds, the infighting, the victories, the accusations of cheating, and worse.
Incredibly, Bobby, the poster boy for hard work, honesty, and integrity, holds nothing back, even when it reflects poorly on him. "It happened, and there's nothing I can do about that," is what he says. The result is raw racing history.
Along with the Earnhardts, the Jarretts, and the Pettys, the Allisons are racing family royalty, and Miracle, a family saga of determination, loyalty, and love, is filled with some of the greatest racing stories of all time. If you ever wanted to read a book that puts you in the garage, in the pits, and in the boardrooms, and at the same time tugs at your heartstrings---this is the book for you.

From Booklist
The high-speed, violent nature of stock-car racing lends itself to tragedy, but the Allisons--NASCAR royalty along with the Pettys, the Earnhardts, and the Jarretts--seem to have endured more than their share, losing two sons and a close personal friend. Golenbock, veteran author of dozens of sports chronicles, frames the story of brothers Bobby and Donnie Allison around a seemingly bottomless trove of anecdotes detailing their hardscrabble beginnings on Florida dirt tracks. The account eventually covers the Allisons' current -multimillion-dollar presence within the NASCAR empire, but the early years are the most fun to read about, as the brothers relied on nerve and street smarts while they careened around the South's small tracks, occasionally winning just enough for a $2 steak and a hotel room. The Allisons' rise coincided with NASCAR's burgeoning popularity, so their story also works as a casual history of the sport. Where there's interest in auto racing--which is virtually everywhere--there will be significant demand for this crowd-pleaser. Wes Lukowsky

Review
"The Allisons were the heart and soul of stock car racing---in victory and in tragedy. Golenbock captures the heartbreak and the inspiration of their story, from the thrilling rides in big-time races to the true grit of an American family fighting to survive."
---Robert Lipsyte, former New York Times sports columnist

"NASCAR is not just about sheet metal and horsepower; it's about people. Bobby Allison is an American hero, and this book allows us to become temporary members of his family. By the last page, we all want to give Bobby and Judy Allison a hug. This is the best NASCAR book ever written."
---Tom Cotter, NASCAR historian and author of Holman Moody: The Legendary Race Team "You hold in your hands, reader, our family saga. It's about racing, beating the odds, chasing your dream, making something out of nothing and, of course, the importance of family. Peter Golenbock has done a wonderful job telling our tale. We hope it entertains and inspires you." --Judy Allison, Bobby Allison's wife

About the Author

Still Waiting for the Last Word from Bobby Himself
By William I. Brown
Golenbock can be credited for researching and releasing a book no one else has done; for that we should be thankful. Is the book anywhere close to the "last word" on Bobby Allison?..not by a long shot. I admire Bobby to no end; just a super, decent guy and one of the best American drivers ever, regardless of type of car. But..here's wishing that somehow Bobby and the Allison clan / Alabama gang will pen the perfect memoir. There are obviously holes in the information that might be shared due to Bobby's horrendous accident that abruptly ended his career, but that must be expected. One thing's for certain, Bobby Allison was as fine a racer as you could find. I'd love to see him do a similar book to his brother Donnie's, one of the best memoirs from a driver I've ever read. Other reviews of Golenbock's book take issue with statements of fact. I hope authors learn from the critique; factual errors easily checked just can't happen, nor should they get by a good publisher / editor. A heartfelt attaboy to Bobby Allison for being selected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame!

Great Story Riddled by Errors
By W. DeWald
I have been a Bobby Allison fan for more than 50 years as I saw him race in his very early years in South Florida, so I was very much looking forward to this book. Sadly the errors that are rampant throughout the book ruined the story. Other reviews here have noted some errors, but the number is truly staggering--and utterly inexplicable in this age of Google and instant info. Here are the errors I found:

What made the June 20 1971 Riverside race notable was that Bobby had arranged with Motorola to put a two-way radio in the car so that during the race he could talk directly with Eddie. Though Allison popularized the two-way radio, it was first used in 1952 by Al Stevens in a Modified/Sportsman race on the famed beach/road course.
