From Publishers Weekly
After being physically and emotionally abused by his mother and her live-in boyfriend, Colton Simpson moved in with his grandmother. She took care of him and brought him to church, but Simpson still became Li'l Cee. This was his name among the Crips, and on the night he was initiated into the gang-the same day that he hit a home run in Little League-he shot two men at a gas station. He was ten years old. In this often enthralling and emotional memoir, Simpson takes readers inside his life with the gang, from the time he joined through his 16-month prison sentence and to his leaving the Crips. Some passages are quite graphic and can drag on a bit too long, and some of Simpson's turns of phrase can seem a bit awkward or overdramatic. ("The tumbling dominoes of my life events lose their velocity.") But the world Simpson evokes with Pearlman's help is fascinating, and his narrative is clearly heartfelt. For those readers willing to look, the book provides a window into an often misunderstood way of life.

From Booklist
The Crips, one of two notorious L.A. street gangs that have attained national prominence, is a famously difficult organization from which to retire alive. Colton "C-Loc" Simpson did, however, and now provides an insider's perspective on day-to-day life in the Crips, the gang's history (including quite a bit about its rival, the Bloods), and the plight of growing up in the 'hood while wanting a better life. To free himself from poverty and constant physical danger, Simpson made some changes. His former wife Gina once accused him of "acting White." He replied, "You think I'm some bourgeoisie Negro? My changes aren't negative and White. They're positive and pro-Black"--which reveals both changed attitude and just how wide the racial-cultural gulf has become. Though gritty, Simpson's story is by no means hopeless. "Life is something to live and do, not to verbalize," he says shortly before signing off with "In Struggle, Little Cee (Loc, no more)." This unvarnished portrayal of gang life is enlightening and even inspiring about a subject badly in need of illumination. Mike Tribby

From the Inside Flap

Colton (“C-Loc”) Simpson was a Crip. Beginning at the impossibly tender age of ten in the mid-1970s, Simpson’s world was defined in terms of war. By the time he quit—the first gang member allowed to do so—he’d risen through the ranks to become Stabilizer and later, General. Simpson was the son of Dick Simpson, a ballplayer for the California Angels, but even before he became a gangbanger, his childhood was tough. Raised by his grandmother at the edge of Los Angeles’s South Central, Simpson didn’t turn to the streets so much as become engulfed by them: without asking to be part of the gang, his induction into the Crips involved running down an alley while the members opened fire on him as he ran.

Simpson was an elite gang soldier, loyal to a fault, participating wholly in a system whose rules and unique ethics he quickly mastered. But Simpson’s run at the top of the Crips was cut off by betrayal, injury, and a prison stint that plunged him into an even fiercer war beyond gang violence: the war in Calapatria prison between the Crips and the corrections officers.

It’s impossible not to care about the youth Simpson was, or about Simpson’s fellow gangbanger Smiley, or about Gina, the long-suffering friend and mother of two sons who eventually married Simpson in prison. INSIDE THE CRIPS is an intimate detailed look at gang life in the 1970s-1990s, and at the same time a story of both buoyant camaraderie and devastating loss. It places the reader in the center of the rush that comes from participating in gang violence and puts the extraordinary life and times of one Crip into a larger context.

An insider's perspective
By Hot Sauce
As an ex gangmember myself, my "review" is really a "critique" and is from an entirely different perspective. First off, when I consider/read this type of information, my first objective is to consider the source. In this case that would be "Li'l Cee". And he is well respected within the gang ranks and one of the few who has the street and prison rep(reputation) along with the literary skills to write such a powerful piece. Second objective, is his story credible or is it just a good piece of fiction? Well, I've personally walked the line (did time) with Li'L Cee and know and/or witnessed alot of the incidents he spoke about as well as did time with the individuals he spoke on and everything was as he wrote. There was a couple of exceptions & that was some names were changed to protect the guilty. From this insider's perspective, this books gets 5 stars.

Good Book About A Terrible Lifestyle!
By Loyd Eskildson
Ice T sets the tone for "Inside the Crips," writing in the forward that "masculinity is at a premium in the 'hood; wealth is defined by violence, aggression, and strength. Gang wars are no stupider than other other war. Crips are even more powerful in penitentiaries - prison doesn't teach good citizenship. It teaches violence."

Carlton Simpson, author and central figure, is the son of a former professional baseball player (7 years with L.A. Dodgers). Carlton's father left home when he was four, and he was abused by his mother; Carlton nonetheless received love and strong guidance living with his grandmother. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough - he left after a Little League game to be "jumped into" the Crips, and then shoot two bloods - all at the age of ten.

Expelled from school for selling drugs, his grandmother tried sending him to two others, with no success. Carlton's education ended with the 8th grade. Numerous shootings and jewelry store robberies later he is caught, and sentenced to seven years in juvenile. Out in half the time at age 19, he continues his destructive behavior.

Gang warfare is greatly intensified within prison confines - one wonders how anyone makes it out in one piece. Guard abuse and brutality adds to the danger. Regardless, upon release Carlton returns to his modis operandi.

Six months after being released, Simpson is again arrested and sentenced to 24 years for robbery and attempted murder (shooting and seriously wounding a bystander who tried to stop him). At age 33 Simpson is again paroled, having supposedly gained insight on the pointlessness of ganbanging, while blaming White people for much/most of his problems. (Particularly disturbing is his wife's leaving him after he began reforming in prison - Carlton was sounding "too White.")

"Inside the Crips" ends with Carlton working for Ice T (an acquaintance during his early years). Unfortunately, that is not the end of the story, however, Carlton has again been arrested for participating in a jewelry robbery and is awaiting trial. This would be his third strike, if convicted, and the end of what could have been a useful life. (One uncle was a lawyer, another an LA policeman.)

I thought it was a good book
By J. Massie
Before I read this book, I came and read these reviews, and I wondered why are people talkin about monster's book, when this is about Colton's book. Now after I have read this book I see why, this book is very similar, just replace killing crips with killing bloods, I could have even sworn I remeber some passages that are the same,(EX. How the prisoners treated the busters in jail), and there are some people mentioned in both books, besides that, I thought it was an intresting book, it gives very detalied descripsions about what goes on in the life of a crip. A lot of people don't realize that growing up in gang neiborhoods, being in a gang isn't so much by choice, my father grew up in San deigo, he had been around some of the gang members, lil brothers and cousins. When he was old enough, he was asked to join the bloods, when he said he'd think about it, they chased him home, everyday until he decided that he would join. These books give a lil insite to their world and lets people see what's it really like, in these streets, and gives knowledge to the young ones hoping they would choose a different path. Although I thinks Mosters book is a better read, this book is also very good, if intresed, you should definetly read one of these books.

Purgatory: A Prison Diary Volume 2, by Jeffrey Archer

On August 9, 2001, 22 days after Archer--now known as Prisoner FF8282--was sentenced to four years in prison for perjury, he was transferred from a maximum security prison in London to HMP Wayland, a medium security prison in Norfolk. For the next 67 days, as he waited to be reclassified for an "open," minimum security prison, he encountered not only the daily degradations of a dangerously overstretched prison system but also the spirit and courage of his fellow inmates.
Purgatory: A Prison Diary, Volume 2, is Archer's frank, shocking, sometimes humorous, sometimes horrifying account of those 67 days.

From Publishers Weekly
As recounted in this second installment of his prison diary, Archer's 67 days at Wayland, a medium-security facility in Norfolk, sounds much more pleasant than the time he spent at a maximum-security facility in London, where his status as a bestselling novelist and member of the House of Lords didn't help much. At Wayland, after making the right connections, he could use his considerable fortune to buy decent food, extra phone cards, have his laundry done—even arrange to bid on a $900,000 painting by the Colombian artist Botero, thanks to an inmate being deported back to that country. But as he points out after a fight between prisoners results in a man's head being split open by a snooker ball, "I go into great detail to describe this incident simply because those casually reading this diary might be left with an impression that life at Wayland is almost bearable. It isn't." Archer comes across as a remarkable piece of work—a character only a novelist as subtle as Anthony Powell could invent. At one moment he's remembering discussions with fellow Conservative politicians about the future of the party; the next he's complaining about the prison menu. What obviously kept him going—and will keep readers turning the pages—is his ability to write by hand up to 3,000 words a day of his journals and his 2002 novel, Sons of Fortune, while maintaining the wry humor that can cause him to comment, after seeing a recent TV adaptation of Great Expectations, "If I hadn't been in prison, I would have walked out after fifteen minutes."

1st and 3rd volume are much better
By Brigitta H.
1st and 3rd volume are better. it is just too repetitive. if the goal was to show how boring prison life is not sure he really accomplished that. Given his title he could have (should) have included more information/statistics/life of other inmates

Written from the experience of an entrepreneur who himself has experience many successes and many failures, this business man tells how to reach your business dreams in a very unusual way. By exploring your strengths and weaknesses with his guidance you have thorough knowledge of the tools you need to overcome your pitfalls and to complement your strengths. By taking his peaks and valleys tour you gain the confidence that prevents your pitfalls from destroying your business or you. With this boxed kit, Kaleil instructs the business person with very simple lessons which are on two CD's and augmented with a more in-depth guidebook. After assuming the progress pose and listening to your inner self under his pleasant voice as guidance, you are equipped to write in your workbook to prepare quick outlines for ultimately making a successful business plan which fits you and your dreams. His encouragement helps you see that true success is not measured in dollars but in satisfaction and fulfillment, without which any business becomes drudgery and is likely doomed to failure. I found all the principles and exercizes which Kaliel gears toward entrepreneurship to be so helpful that by substituting the word life instead of business or self instead of entrepreneur, this kit is great for gaining success in your whole life scope. I highly recommend this kit for anyone at any stage of life. It is simple enough and contains such profound wisdom it would be a great gift for a high school age youth to learn from in order to assure not only success but joy in life.

This Kit is worth its weight in gold!
By Amir Hegazi
As an aspiring entrepreneur, small-business owner, and avid student of business, I found the Entrepreneur's Success Kit to be much more practical and relevant to my business and own development than any other literature on entrepreneurship (or general business/management for that matter) I've come across. It's my belief that the Kit is possibly the best how-to start-up business book ever!

Not only is its in-a-box format compelling and easy to use, Kaleil Tuzman's style- throughout each page- is intelligent, concise, and right to the point. Furthermore, he is able to effectively simplify a wide array of complex topics in a way that's not only understandable, but actionable as well.

Additionally, the visuals are very well designed. Meanwhile, the advisers cards provide a great reference tool covering everything from creativity, to planning, to motivation; as well as start-up related topics including product or service development, business planning, team development, financing and financial management, sales and marketing, and more.

Finally, the CD's included provide an interactive tool to delve into the inner side of entrepreneurship (or the foundation of all entrepreneurial success).

This is a truly remarkable and inspiring product. My only regret is not having this product a few years ago in the early-stages of my entrepreneurial development.

I've now added a sixth book to my all-time favorite business books, namely Built to Last, Pour Your Heart into It, the Tipping Point, the E-Myth Revisited, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Enjoy!

The 80 international dessert recipes here are competently written and even if choosing a representative dessert from each country named seems excessive, it does guarantee a wide range of dishes. Among them: apple pie with ice cream from the United States, fruit pudding from Lithuania, poppy strudel from Yugoslavia and trifle from England. South America, the Caribbean and Africa don't lack exposure either, with guava and coconut recipes in abundance. Some recipes are rather sketchy, which may present problems for beginning cooks, but, for the most part, this is a tasty way to make desserts. Foreign rights: Jane Rotrosen. October

Review
“America's Best Storyteller.” ―New York Times Book Review

About the Author

Ross Thomas is ranked as one of the very top thriller writers by his fellow authors, and his readers loudly agree. Two Edgar Awards, and other prizes, only complement the abundant praise that Thomas has received.

Thomas died in 1995, and since then all but one of his twenty-five novels have gone out of print. This should never have happened to the man of whom The New Yorker has said "Very few...are as consistently entertaining...even fewer can match him for style and power." Minotaur is proud to remedy this situation by reissuing Thomas's novels. So start reading, and prepare to join Ross Thomas's legions of admiring fans.

Time To Discover Thomas
By Writetrak
Ross Thomas's THE COLD WAR SWAP is a good introduction to one of the better and often overlooked thriller writers. Grab a handful of his novels (Briarpatch, Ah Treachery, etc.)and you'll come away liking his style, wit, and sense of story structure better than much of what is out there today.
THE COLD WAR SWAP is a look into a period most readers won't remember (post War Germany) which also makes it 'new.' I don't think this one represents his best but it's enough for you to add his name to your reading list. By the time you get through several of his books you'll wonder why you haven't read him sooner.
I'm glad to see the books are being re-released.

First and Maybe the Best
By Derald Porter
The Cold War Swap is the first in a long series of excellent mystery/thrillers by Ross Thomas. Thomas's first novel was written during his career as a newsman and public relations expert in many parts of the world. As with all first novels there are a few holes - the one that sticks out most in my mind is the biographical anomaly of main character Michael Padillo - alleged to have been born in 1926 - who after a variegated upbringing by his multi-lingual mother, enters the US Army and "in late 1942 was happily running the bar of an officers' club..." As a veteran myself I found it extremely unlikely that a 16 year old kid would be "running" anything in the US Army. Padillo gets picked for undercover work after someone "browsing through his records" learns that he can speak and write six languages. I'm kind of surprised they didn't discover that he was underage for enlistment at the same time.. In any case the novel is extemely well-written, with sharply defined characters in a classic 50's-60's Cold War "us against them" espionage story. Most of the characters are neither wholly good nor completely evil, and you have some fun trying to figure out which way some of them might bounce. A very satisfying read, well worth checking out from your library if available - a good introduction to the shadowy and shady worlds of money, politics, espionage and government about which Ross Thomas wrote so well during his writing career.

The Side of the Angels, by Christina Bartolomeo

From the New York Times notable author Christina Bartolomeo, a novel that will make you root for the underdog and cheer for true love to win the day.

Nicky Malone, a public relations flack, hasn't seen ex-boyfriend Tony Boltanski in five years when a contentious, high-stakes, and slightly nutty nurses' strike brings them together again. While struggling with her growing feelings for the still exasperating, pigheaded Tony, Nicky also tries to cope with her nagging widowed mother, a slick boss, and an officious assistant who has read too many articles about cutthroat career women. The Side of the Angels is a refreshing, realistic look at the demands---and rewards---of career, commitment, and unforgettable love.

From Publishers Weekly
An engaging cast of characters sometimes finds itself muddling through an unfocused plot in Bartolomeo's second novel. Like her first romantic comedy, the acclaimed Cupid and Diana, her sophomore effort features a fractious Catholic clan in Washington, D.C., and a feisty 30-ish heroine beset by two completely opposite men. In this case, it's clear from the beginning that Nicky Malone, a tough-talking red-haired PR agent, will reunite with "the man who got away," charismatic union organizer Tony Boltanski, while they work on a nurse's strike in Rhode Island. But the political strafing of the campaign overwhelms the novel's more interesting subplots, including a thwarted romance between Nicky's cousins, Louise and Johnny (who are not related by blood), which is heartfelt but problematic: even though Johnny loves Louise, he is engaged to someone else. Nicky wants them matched partly to get Louise off her back about her own love life but the strike takes her so far off-scene that the plot thread gets lost. Sarcastic wit (quite a bit of which Nicky directs toward her meddling mother) and abundant charm propel the novel to its somewhat rushed conclusion, but some readers may get lost in long expository passages and the thicket of labor infighting at the novel's core.

From Library Journal
Bartolomeo's first novel, Cupid and Diana, was made into the Hallmark movie Cupid and Cate. Her latest work once again features a strong, independent woman trying to figure out love, romance, and family relationships. Nicky Malone works for a public relations firm, where she's assigned to helping the union during a nurses' strike. Also assigned to this strike is Tony Boltanski, a union man, champion of the little guy, and Nicky's ex-boyfriend. Having just broken up with her latest flame, the last thing Nicky wants is to work with Tony. Central to the story is Nicky's cousin Louise, who's in love with her other cousin Johnny, who happens to be engaged to someone else. Add to the mix Nicky's mother, who is desperate for her to get married, and Nicky's assistant, who is after her job. Bartolomeo has a way of making the reader feel a part of the story. She captures all the nuances of one's quirky relationships with one's mother, one's best friends, and the guy who got away. Highly recommended for public libraries. Good lighthearted read, but could have been tighter
By John Luiz
I really admired Cupid & Diana, this author's previous novel. Here she delivers on the same formula of offering an interesting portrayal of a woman's efforts to get her personal and work life in order as she struggles between the choice of two men. Here the main character, Nicky, works for a PR firm, that is hired to help a union negotiate a strike at a hospital in Winsock (read: Woonsocket) Rhode Island. Meanwhile, she's trying to deal with a recent boyfriend who cheated on her and a more-distant ex, whom she's suddenly reunited with because he's working with the nurse's union as well. Bartolomeo populates the novel with a lot of characters and offers some very intersting behind the scenes details of managing a strike. Her bio on the back sleeve mentions she did similar work as Nicky for a teacher's group. I have three complaints about this novel, however, that made it less enjoyable than Cupid & Diana. First, the first third of the novel reads like a series of character sketches written for an intro to creative writing class. We're introduced to an endless series of people -- some of them seem indistinguishable -- and the story grinds to a halt as we get a long, detailed description of each character. And some of these details seem to make the characters come across as merely cute novel creations and not real people -- e.g. the sneaky sycophant who also has a passion for contra dancing and children's toys, the saintly friend who takes care of everyone but herself, and oh by the way also has wacky ideas about religion. Second, much of the dialogue reads like bad TV or movie scripts, in which a lot of narrative exposition about the character's past is stuffed into the dialogue. People who know each other well don't communicate with long details about what happened in their shared history. Third, and perhaps most annoying is Nicky's jaded view of nearly everyone and everything she encounters. At times, it becomes almost laughable. Even minor characters -- a pizza delivery boy, a hotel clerk, even a pair of dogs -- have to get Nicky's petulant observations about how bored, unhappy or bothersome they are. A character this cynical needs a little awareness or sense of humor about her pessisimism to be tolerable, and this character has neither. Still the story carries itself along. And the author has a considerable talent for capturing specific details of how people dress and populate their living and work spaces. I look forward to Bartolomeo's future efforts, but this story was not as tight or well written as Cupid and Diana. Anyone who likes these tales of woman balancing their work and career demands should also take a look at Sara Lewis's novels. They're very good and fun, easy reads.

Not Just Chick Lit
By Amazon Customer
It is clear that Ms. Batolomeo is a wonderful writer. Her descriptions of people and places are so vivid that you easily conjure up a mental image, so I was surprised at the lack of connection I felt to her main character. Nicky Malone is fallible and realistic but bears no traits that make her especially appealing, or unappealing for that matter. I found myself feeling apathetic about whether she got her man or not, particularly since there was nothing in the description of their relationship that made me root for them. The subplot involving nurses on strike was infinitely more interesting, despite my having generally little or no interest in labor disputes. I was much more emotionally invested in the outcome of the strike than I was in the relationship between the heroine and the "man that got away". I suspect that the author herself may have been less invested in creating a believable romantic relationship than she was in depicting the behind-the-scenes machincations of a strike, and as a result, it read as though the romance was the subplot to the strike, not the other way around. Toward the end of the novel, it appeared as though Ms. Bartolomeo realized this imbalance and compensated with a few mawkish descriptions of the depth of feeling between Nicky and the object of her affection, none of which were consistent with the way she thought about or behaved toward him throughout the first two-thirds of the novel. I think the author tried to provide a crowd-pleasing chick lit ending when it is clear from the nature and quality of her writing that her tendency is toward material of much greater depth.

entertaining contemporary romance
By A Customer
Five years ago public relations expert Nicky Malone and union organizer Tony Boltanski ended their torrid relationship when he failed to arrive at her relative's wedding having been tied up by an urgent union matter that could not wait for a couple of hours. Though she rebounded with the philandering Jeremy for three years, Nicky knows that she never got over Tony, the one that got away. Meanwhile, Nicky's widowed practicing Catholic mother prays that her daughter get married.

The nurses of St. Francis Hospital in Winsack, Rhode Island are on strike over working conditions and patient safety. Coventry, Inc sees the bottom line as money not care; they demand changes such as nurse-patient ratio going from 1:3 to 1:8. The hospital administration has made the nurses look like the bad guys to the public; Nicky begins a PR campaign to counteract that impression. However, she works with Tony, who believes in inside fastballs that would knock his grandmother down while Nicky thinks a soft sell is needed. Adding to the charged atmosphere is the unfinished business between two driven people who still love one another.

This entertaining contemporary romance focuses on a serious social issue yet contains amusing sarcastic asides. The story line provides a deep look at media spinning in which both sides spend time painting a negative position of their opponents (sounds familiar). That is where Nicky and Tony differ as she believes their side can sell the nurses' argument of deteriorating patient care while he believes you foster the image that management are scrooges. Though the strike resolution seems hasty, fans will enjoy this labor dispute romance.

Review

“This book might be one of the single most important books about Stephen King ever written. . . . Beginning with the premise that all of King's work is intertwined in an intricate weave of overlapping narrative threads, with the world of the Dark Tower as the linchpin around which everything else orbits, Wiater, Golden, and Wagner carefully prove their point, in an entertaining, intriguing, and thoroughly indisputable way.” ―Stephen Spignesi, author of The Essential Stephen King

“Here is the Stephen King companion to end all Stephen King companions . . . The three authors bring their considerable expertise to a survey of the complete King fictional corpus, grouping novels and tales by setting and theme. An indispensable insider's guide to the influences on King, his plots and characters, TV and film adaptations, and more.” ―Publishers Weekly

Section OneThe Worlds of The Dark Tower and The Stand

The Dark Tower series is the core of the Stephen King Universe, and the axis upon which our entire thesis for this book rotates. Though the majority of the author’s work takes place in the parallel reality dimension that contains King’s fictional towns Castle Rock, Derry, and others, the parallel reality of Roland the Gunslinger--and by extension that of The Stand--is much more fundamental.

Just as, in the series itself, The Dark Tower is the point of time, space, and reality where all dimensions meet, the spindle of creation, so are most of King’s works then an outcropping of the Dark Tower series, which was conceived as early as 1970. Nearly all of King’s heroes and all of his villains, scattered across the various parallel realities, are involved in a single cosmic conflict, with the Tower as the ultimate prize.

Although Stephen King worked on the Dark Tower series for three decades, consciously and unconsciously weaving it in and out of his other writings, a great many of his readers are likely to have missed its prominence. Just as the Tower itself binds all realities together, this series of stories and concepts is the center of the Stephen King Universe, the many fictional worlds he has created.

And it all started with a poem.

King read Robert Browning’s “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came” (1855) for a class assignment in his sophomore year (1967/68) at the University of Maine at Orono. In March of 1970, the year he graduated, he began the first novel in the series, The Gunslinger. He continued to work on that novel over the course of the next twelve years, even while he was writing some of his best-loved works, including ‘Salem’s Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), and The Stand (1978).

Did he realize, then, at the start of the process, that it would be all of a piece, all bits of a single story? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

But it is. In the fourth volume, Wizard and Glass (1997), he at last came to that conclusion. In the afterword, he states:

I have written enough novels and short stories to fill a solar system of the imagination, but Roland’s story is my Jupiter--a planet that dwarfs all the others... I am coming to understand that Roland’s world (or worlds) actually contains all the others of my making; there is a place in Mid-World for Randall Flagg, Ralph Roberts, the wandering boys from The Eyes of the Dragon, even Father Callahan, the damned priest from ‘Salem’s Lot.

In the latter volumes, the truth of this collision of worlds becomes incarnate, as characters from ‘Salem’s Lot, Hearts in Atlantis, and others all enter into the saga as significant characters, all from different worlds, and as Stephen King himself is drawn into the series as a character, the author a part of his own magnum opus. It is all of a piece.

Herein, we shall discuss the books in this series and those related to it, how they are interrelated and interconnected, and how they touch upon and are likewise touched upon by other of the author’s works.

The history of the Dark Tower series is this:

In a place called Mid-World--which might be the future of a world much like our own, or a separate reality entirely--the land is divided into Baronies, some ruled by an honorable rank of men called gunslingers, much like knights. One of the jewels of Mid-world is Gilead, whose lord is Steven Deschain, a gunslinger descended from the bloodline of Arthur Eld, who had united much of Mid-world in ancient times (King Arthur, of course).

But during Steven’s time, a new threat arises. John Farson, called “the good man,“ has begun to incite a rebellion among the peasantry and even some nobility against the Affiliation, the governments of the various Baronies that have banded together. Traitors and spies abound. Marten, a wizard advisor of Steven’s, seduces the lord’s wife and flaunts that intimacy in front of Steven’s son, Roland, a gunslinger-in-training. (In order to become gunslingers, the young students have to best their teacher in battle.) Marten hopes to force Roland to an early test against his teacher so that he will fail, and be killed or banished from Gilead.

Marten’s scheme works, but only partially, for Roland does best his instructor in single combat.

Roland is shocked to find that his father is aware of Marten’s machinations, and Steven prevents him from going after Marten. He tells his son that Marten is working with Farson (though in fact Marten will eventually be revealed to BE Farson), and in order for him to be certain Roland is safe, Steven sends his offspring incognito to a seaside Barony called Mejis, along with his two best friends--Cuthbert and Alain--neither of whom are full gunslingers yet.

In Mejis, however, they find that Farson’s plans have stretched even further, and the local authorities are in league with the rebellion. It is evident that Farson, though pretending to be the hero of the people, has had sinister intentions all along. Soon enough, a dark magician called Walter shows up in Mejis; the mage apparently works for both Farson and Marten. Once again, however, it seems this creature has many faces, and is in fact yet another facet of the same man. Walter is Farson and Farson is Marten, all one and the same. There are many other faces to this being, whom we may alternately refer to as “Flagg” or “Legion.”

Roland falls in love with Susan Delgado in Mejis, and though their love is doomed (as is Susan), it will be the one real love of his life. During his time by the sea, Roland comes into possession of a glass ball, a powerful magical tool that is part of Maerlyn’s Rainbow. In it, he sees a vision of the future, much of which he cannot remember later. One thing remains clear to him: the Dark Tower at the center of all things, the spindle upon which reality turns, has been somehow tainted. It is being corrupted, and Roland decides instantly that he must devote his life to a quest to save the Tower.

Before he may do that, however, he returns to Gilead, where he is tricked by a witch into killing his own mother. The time subsequent to that is shrouded in mystery. All that is known is this: Farson’s efforts cause the destruction of the Affiliation and the devastation of Gilead, which only hastens the changes that are coming to the entire world. The world, as Roland says so often, is moving on. It is ending, growing barren and empty. The only way to stop that is to save the Tower, and so Roland and his friends set off on a quest to find it. During that mission, all of his associates, his ka-tet, die, until only he remains.

Many years later, he catches up with Walter, the man in black, and learns a little about the true nature of the Tower. Thereafter, he begins gathering a new ka-tet from various worlds connected to his own: Eddie and Susannah Dean and Jake Chambers become gunslingers in their own right over the course of the quest.

The new ka-tet faces many adventures and hardships during their time together. They cross over from one world to another and then back, through thin places between those worlds. In the New York City that Jake is from there is a rose that is the physical embodiment of the Tower before it became tainted. The agents of chaos, or of the Beast that now guards the Tower, the Crimson King, want it destroyed; Roland and the others will have to save it.

They meet Flagg on their journey, and it is revealed that he is also Marten (Walter/Farson/Legion), who serves the Crimson King. As noted, the specific chronicle of Roland is the centerpiece, but a great many of King’s other works have direct or indirect ties to it. Flagg originally appeared in King’s landmark novel The Stand, still widely considered to be among his best. In that book, a U.S. military research facility investigating biowarfare accidentally unleashes a virus that kills 99.4% of the population of the Earth. In America, the survivors are plagued with dreams of a kindly old woman serving the side of light, and a dark man with blazing red eyes who serves the cause of darkness. This is Flagg. Over the course of the novel, the survivors join one side or the other, and eventually those serving light must make a final stand against those serving darkness. Flagg is defeated, and society and civilization begin again.

At the time of The Stand’s publication, Flagg’s part in Roland’s story was unclear. In fact, the next time Flagg appeared as a major figure was in The Eyes of the Dragon (1987). In that fairy-tale-like story, Flagg is a wizard serving a king in a medieval landscape filled with magick, a land that seems somewhat similar to but not necessarily the same as that of Roland the Gunslinger. (Flagg was noted to have returned to that particular city many times over the ages.) The heroes of that tale eventually defeat Flagg but he escapes, prompting two of them, Thomas and Dennis, to go on a hero’s quest to destroy the wizard. That is a story as yet untold.

In the novella “The Little Sisters of Eluria,“ King clearly connects Roland’s world with that of The Eyes of the Dragon, unmistakably making them one and the same. In The Dark Tower IV, Roland and his ka-tet pass through a parallel dimension that is clearly that of The Stand, just before they finally meet Flagg face to face.

A major theme of the Dark Tower series is that due to the machinations of The Crimson King, the “beams” of power that emanate from the Tower and hold all time, space, and reality together are being broken down and corrupted. This phenomenon has affected all of those realities, causing the barriers between them to begin breaking down and allowing for some travel from one to the next.

Great for everyone..
By Patricia C. Riley
This is a great book for everyone interested in Stephen King's works. I have read a great deal of his work, so I imagine that I am one of those that falls under the 'Constant Reader' title, and this book had me noting that I had missed some of the overlaps and complexity of his many books. I look forward to reading his books again, and catching even more, thanks to this book.

However, this is also good for the more casual Stephen King reader, as it guides you through his worlds and his books. The authors give very good analyses of each book and each world, sorting through the myriad of characters and ideas that Stephen King uses (quite deftly, in my opinion).

A few words from Hank Wagner, one of the co-authors of THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE
By Amazon Customer
A little background info for those of you who have happened upon this offering. THE COMPLETE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is an updated version of THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE, which was published in May 2001. The CSKU features nine new chapters, which cover King's work from approximately early 2000 through mid 2005. The CSKU discusses all of King's work through that period, including books like DREAMCATCHER, FROM A BUICK 8, the final three installments of the Dark Tower series, and television series such as Rose Red and Kingdom Hospital. Basically, it covers all of King's work through the present day, with the exception of books like THE COLORADO KID, CELL, and the upcoming LISEY'S STORY, and a few short stories such as "The Things They Left Behind", which appeared in the 2005 anthology TRANSGRESSIONS.

Besides the inclusion of the new chapters, the book's been rearranged and revised in many ways, mostly to correct the factual errors and typos that crept up in the first edition. Hopefully, we caught most of the glitches in the new edition; the publishing gremlins that plague all books are a diligent bunch, however, so I expect folks will find some errors in this version as well.

If you should find an error or typo and would like to bring it to my attention, or would just like to discuss the book in general, please feel free to write me at HankW26159@aol.com. In the meantime, I hope you're intrigued enough to purchase the book.

Publishers Weekly called the original edition "An indispensable insider's guide to the influences on King, his plots and characters, TV and film adaptations and more..."

The Library Journal said that the SKU "...will appeal to serious King fans...[the STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE] will be an especially useful addition to academic resources on contemporary authors."

My favorite quote came from noted Stephen King scholar Stephen J. Spignesi: "THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is as important a book as Douglas Winter's seminal STEPHEN KING: THE ART OF DARKNESS, which paved the way for the rest of us, we Chroniclers of the King. THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE is a major contribution to the field of scholarship about King, and King's fans should be grateful that Stan Wiater, Chris Golden, and Hank Wagner - a truly talented and insightful drawing of the three -- have done the kind of work it took to research and write THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE."

Enjoy.
