Conduct Unbecoming: Gays and Lesbians in the U.S. Military, by Randy Shilts

The definitive book on lesbians and gay men in the US military.

Randy Shilts, author of the classic documentary history of the AIDS epidemic And The Band Played On, was acclaimed for his ability to take epic histories and molding them into gripping, intimate narratives. Conduct Unbecoming, his groundbreaking exploration of lesbians and gays in the military, came out of hundreds of interviews conducted with servicepeople at all levels of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps and intense research uncovering thousands of documents resulting in a unique history of gays in the military as well as the persecution of gays in the military. Conduct Unbecoming will leave readers moved and imbued with a better understanding of the pressing situation in our nation's military.

"A sober, thoroughly researched and engrossingly readable history on the subject. [Shilts's] chronicle is excellent military history, closely woven with an enthralling analysis of the changing definitions of sexuality and personal relationships in American society....[A] landmark book....Remarkable."
--New York Times Book Review

"A masterpiece of investigative reporting…Shilts has shown us the honor homosexuals have brought, and continue to bring, to the uniforms they wear and the country they serve." - Boston Globe

"Gays, we are told, would damage morale in the military. Shilts documents the fact that morale has already been eaten away by hypocrisy, contradictions, and favoritism…This book will be to gay and lesbian liberation what Betty Friedan's was to early feminism or Rachel Carson's to ecological consciousness. No fair-minded person can read Conduct Unbecoming and consider the present system defensible. - USA Today

"Gripping reading....the history of homosexual people and the movement for gay/lesbian equality in the United States can nowhere be more clearly told." - Los Angeles Times

Compelling arguements
By Rachel F
Shilts uses his investigative journalism background to craft a compelling argument for the free service of all of those who volunteer to serve. He gives a window into the feelings and motivations of gays in the military and those who serve with them. The progression of the events and documentation of changes in attitude seem to lead toward a future where gays can serve openly. I found the parallels drawn between the situation of gay soldiers now and the situation of black soldiers before the 1950's to be especially convincing.

One of the most important works of American history in the 20th Century
By Joseph C. Sweeney
Author Shilts has written the seminal work on gays and lesbians in the military. Should not be missed by those interested in American history. I read this book at a time in my life when I was incredibly lonely and sad about my station in life, and, though not gay, I was filled with hope and the promise of a better day by Randy Shilts work.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. One of the great books on American history.

Conduct Unbecoming Indeed -- a Psychotherapist's Review....
By David C. Young
For 20 years, I've worked, as a psychotherapist with active duty military & their families, as well with as vets. I recently moved my practice, and of course, I connected with a local military base. I was asked if I'd worked with GLBT. (Believe me, THAT never happened before.) I have a fair amount of GLBT experience, though much of it in the early 1990's. Since then, I've done less, as I was more recently practicing in an extremely conservative town - socially/culturally, religiously, politically. So I decided to update my general GLBT background and my more limited background with GLBT & the military.

Earlier, working in a community mental health center in another state, I was asked to do HIV/AIDS counseling. Randy Shilts, an investigative journalist, was, of course, the author of And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, 20th-Anniversary Edition, the best-selling history of the beginnings of the AIDS epidemic. I read his book then as a basic orientation, and I found it well-written and engaging in an awful way - staggering tragedy and senselessness, with fear, ignorance, hate. So, too, is "Conduct Unbecoming".

Re-grounding in GLBT history, I started with Bryne Fone's Homophobia: A History (see my review), which pretty well stops with Stonewall in 1969. Shilts's book, which covers the Vietnam War up to 1990 - just before Clinton & Don't Ask/Don't Tell -- overlaps some, with Fone, but in a very different style. As with "And the Band", "Conduct Unbecoming" is deeply researched. Wikipedia notes, "Shilts and his assistants conducted over a thousand interviews while researching the book, the last chapter of which Shilts [who died of AIDS shortly after the book was published] dictated from his hospital bed." Shilts's work, coming at that time, was most fortunate, as sadly, many he interviewed died of AIDS. As one reporter noted, "...[Shilts] saved a segment of history from extinction."

I've done some oral history, and yes, I know its limitations. But I also know its unique advantages in the hands of a craftsman. It brings an aliveness, a richness, an immediacy of experiencing and deep knowing that best & most powerfully comes directly from real people, real situations, real stories. All this is made more poignant & powerful because so many of these voices speak only here, now silenced by AIDS.

Sometimes these stories are priceless vignettes, as when Eisenhower ordered a prized WWII staff member to begin a lesbian investigation of the WACS: "'Yes sir,' Phelps said to the general... She would make the list if that was the order. Then she reminded Eisenhower that the WAC battalion at his headquarters was one of the most decorated in the Army. It performed superbly, had the fewest unauthorized absences, the least number of venereal-disease cases, and the most infrequent number of pregnancies of any WAC group anywhere. Getting rid of the lesbians would mean losing competent file clerks, typists, and a larger share of the headquarters' key personnel. `I'll make your list,' Phelps concluded in her crackling North Carolina accent, `but you've got to know when you get the list back, my name's going to be first.'"

"Eisenhower's secretary, also in the room, corrected the sergeant. `Sir,' the secretary said, `if the General pleases, Sergeant Phelps will have to be second on the list. I'm going to type it. My name will be first.'"

"According to Phelps, Eisenhower looked at her, looked at the secretary, shook his head, and said, `Forget that order.'"

More often, Shilts weaves longer stories, both heart-warming & heart-breaking, throughout individual chapters, some throughout the whole book. Over & over, it's where bad luck or courage meets a never-give-up, never-give-in fury with power to back it up. And this fury seems to build as, later & later in the book, it becomes clear that excluding gays & lesbians from the military will eventually become a lost cause. At times, I had to set the book aside; it was too painful. "Conduct Unbecoming" does indeed document much conduct unbecoming, especially that of government investigators. Normally, I shy away from name-calling, but Shilts's favored term - witch-hunt -- is often well-earned.

So often, too, this fury seems fueled by the increasing presence & greater roles of women in the military. Less documented, but I suspect also a factor is the increasing presence & greater roles of blacks, too. Traditionalists definitely felt under siege.

For me, now working as the military opens itself to openly involving homosexuals, Shilts also writes a much-needed tutorial. It really helps me know how we got here. And Shilts gives histories about what homosexuals may expect going forward. He documents the struggles of blacks and, especially, women in the US military, as well as the struggles of GLBT in non-US militaries. All these are sobering. Full acceptance seems, to me, likely to be still a long time coming. And I expect that sharpened awareness to be important in my work going forward.

If I have a criticism of Shilts, it's his interpretations of the mechanisms underlying sexism, racism & homophobia. He correctly identifies them, with sad & brutal clarity, in his stories. His interpretations, his explanations of "why", though, seem to me staying too general, too much "the usual suspects". This is understandable as "the other side" wasn't open to talk & deep reflection, neither at the time they put their homophobia into action nor afterwards - at least not to Shilts. I'm not denying the general involvement of loss of power, challenges to traditional manhood, threats from inner glimpses of bisexuality, readings of the Bible - all these fiercely-held values. But I'd hoped for more deeply precise insights that might help not only those on homophobia's receiving end, but those trapped within homophobia.

By recent studies, many of today's youth seems well-past their elders in accepting & including GLBT. (See, for example, Rich Sabin-Williams's The New Gay Teenager (Adolescent Lives) and my review.) This is similar to what I've seen in over a half-century struggle toward more accepting & including blacks and women. (Though surely we still face serious challenges with ongoing racism/sexism.) But it's really a different world from the 1950's, and a better one.

My field - healing diseases of the mind - doesn't help with homophobia either. Psychology & psychotherapy really don't grok hate & rage. Neither are listed in my book of diseases (DSM), though Aristotle & Plato listed them as such, and more serious than, say, depression. So these fields don't provide us with much deep thinking or quality research, let alone tested approaches on what to do.

Ultimately, my criticism, or more accurately, my frustration is less with Shilts than with my field and society-at-large.

For those interested not only gays & the military, but in civil rights, I strongly recommend this book. It makes these struggles come alive.

The Bronfmans: The Rise and Fall of the House of Seagram, by Nicholas Faith

The story of the Bronfman family is a fascinating and improbable saga. It is dominated by "Mr. Sam," the single greatest figure in the history of the liquor business, the man who made drinking whiskey respectable in the United States and who in the 1950s and 1960s built Seagram into the first worldwide empire in wine and spirits.
After Sam's death in 1971, his oldest son, Edgar, maintained the business, though he was distracted by his matrimonial problems. Nevertheless, in the 1980s he masterminded a major coup when he translated a small investment in oil made by his father into a 25 percent stake in the mighty DuPont company.
But in the 1990s, Edgar allowed his second son, Edgar Jr., to indulge his ambition to become a media tycoon. The stake in DuPont was sold, and the money reinvested in Universal, the film and theme-park empire. Edgar Jr. then paid more than $10 billion to buy Polygram Records and thus fulfill his fancy to be king of the world's music business. But at the same time, he remained in charge of the liquor business, which started to stagnate--indeed, to fall apart. Then came the final disaster when the increasingly divided family sold out to Jean-Marie Messier, overreaching empire builder of Vivendi, the French conglomerate.
But the story of this amazing family over the past century is about more than booze and business. The Bronfmans is a spectacular account that details the larger-than-life personalities and bitter rivalries that have made the family so famous and, sometimes, so infamous.

From Publishers Weekly
A sweeping look at the post-prohibition history of the liquor industry as seen from the living- and boardroom of one of its (once) leading families, journalist and former Economist editor Faith's volume begins with Sam Bronfman, known as Mr. Sam, whose post-prohibition business acumen set the stage for Seagram's rise to international prominence. The company would soon be known for both its products-blended whiskies like 7 Crown and Chivas Regal-and its mid-1930s advertising campaign promoting moderate drinking (the latter, Faith argues, is one of Seagram's most important and lasting contributions). Following Mr. Sam's death in 1971, son Edgar takes the helm and watches Seagram's liquor business stagnate, before his "finest hour": parlaying Seagram's interest in oil company Texas Pacific into over 20 percent ownership of DuPont. Edgar's son, Edgar, Jr., in keeping with a generational trend toward neglecting Seagram's core liquor business, sells Seagram's piece of DuPont to finance the acquisition of MCA/Universal and Polygram Records, which were, in short order, sold off to Vivendi, the French media group, in a sale that "destroyed the Seagram empire, resulting in one of the biggest losses ever sustained by a single family." Amazingly, Faith is as comfortable discussing the distilling process as discussing French pay-TV network CanalPlus; as many strange turns as the Seagram's story takes, the author's versatility is indispensable.

Review
"The Bronfmans is a wonderful addition to the library of family biographies, and in particular to the small shelf on the Canadian-grown Seagram whiskey empire. Splendidly written and researched--particularly on the alcoholic beverage side, of which Nicholas Faith is a distinguished expert--this book is a rollicking good story, a perceptive analysis of the Bronfmans' stunning business success, a tribute to their hard work and acumen--and a cautionary tale about what can happen, even to the greatest."
--Michael R. Marrus, author of Samuel Bronfman: The Life and Times of Mr. Sam

"The Bronfmans is an intriguing odyssey of a fabled and star-crossed celebrity family, filled with engrossing tales of the secrets of the international booze business, backroom billion-dollar shenanigans, dilettante playboys and rakes, rediscovered Jewish heritage, and an unusual champion of human rights."

Great Story, Adequate Telling
By Amazon Customer
First my biases: I'm a Canadian by birth who once lived just a couple of miles from the Bronfman house in Regina. I now live in the NYC suburbs and stood marvelling at the Seagram bldg on Park Ave only 2 weeks ago. In the interim, I've been a consumer market researcher and Seagram has been a client off and on for more than 10 years. I'm also more than a bit interested in booze.

Given the above, I find this book tremendously interesting with literally hundreds of details that were absolutely new to me... and I probably know more about the Bronfman family & Seagram than the average bear. If you're at all interested in the Bronfmans, Seagram or booze, you'll find this to be a fascinating read.

But there are a lot of stylistic problems here as well. First, as other reviewers noted above, Faith's constant references to other authors / biographers is almost annoying. It's like he's personal friends with the other writers for goodness sake.

Second, for some reason, Faith treats the Richler book (Solomon Gursky Was Here) as a more important reference source than personal interviews, biographies or other non-fiction sources. I read the Richler book and loved it but not sure why Faith needs to keep coming back to it?

Third, the editing in this book is simply a mess - there's just no other word for it. Usually I don't even think about editing but with this book, it was so bad I almost stopped reading after the first 50 pages. In the first 4-5 chapters, Faith not only makes the same point multiple times but sometimes uses the same sentence! It was like deja-vu all over again. It's this last point that is most confusing to me - Faith is a former senior editor of The Economist so if anyone should get the editing right, its him.

Anyway, I'll still give it 4 stars. Its a great story and filled in a lot of blanks for me.

Unbelieveably badly written. How can you make this family boring? Also, seemed to "borrow" from a lot of other authors. Don't waste your time.

Interesting Group...These Bronfman's
By JP Czar
I came to read this book via my expanding library on the liquor industry and all things Scottish. This book doesn't delve too deeply into the Seagram's group involvement in Scotland...but nevermind. The book is well written and covers numerous generations of the family....including the numb-skull son who pissed it all away.

Enjoy....

The Beatles: The True Beginnings, by Roag Best, Pete Best, Rory Best

The Casbah Coffee Club, which opened in Liverpool on August 29, 1959, was the brainchild of Mona Best, the mother of Pete Best. It is well known that Pete Best was the drummer for The Beatles in their early days in Liverpool and Hamburg. But less well known is that The Beatles’ origins were in fact at Pete’s mother’s club-it was at the Casbah and with Mona Best’s blessing that the greatest popular music phenomenon of the twentieth century began.

And now, the basement club where The Quarrymen, The Silver Beatles, and finally The Beatles played over 90 times before they hit the Cavern has been reopened and revealed by this remarkable new book. The Casbah’s significance cannot be overestimated-it brought together some of the greatest names in rock music and became the catalyst for the Mersey Beat phenomenon that swept Liverpool in the early 1960s.

Seen here for the first time in forty years is the basement’s interior as it was at the very beginning, juxtaposed with the rooms as they are today, where the ceilings painted by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best still rest. A wealth of rare material from the club and the Bests’ own archives, together with newly-commissioned images by renowned photographer Sandro Sodano, documents the club’s and The Beatles’ intertwined stories.

The Beatles: The True Beginnings also features accounts from early fans hearing the Beatles for the first time. Stunning new color photography of the rooms and memorabilia of the Casbah Coffee Club. Gritty, never-before seen photos of the young Beatles playing for hundreds of of their very first fans. And comments from the Beatles and their closest friends from the period.

Accompanied by a fascinating personal memoir of this extraordinary time, written by Roag Best with his brothers Pete and Rory, this is both a moving family tribute and a unique insight into a remarkable period of Beatles history. The glory of the Casbah has hidden for almost half a century in the Best family’s basement rooms. This account of their earliest days promises to blow back its roof, and that of the Beatles’ unbelievable history, forever.

From the Inside Flap

Before Shea Stadium, The Ed Sullivan Show, and the Cavern, came the Casbah, the club that gave birth to The Beatles and started a music revolution.

A Dream Book
By Heidi Crabtree
I love this book! Makes me want to fly to Liverpool now and visit. Pete Best, who was drummer for the Beatles before they kicked him out with no explanation, gives us a fabulous treat. His mother ran the Casbah Club in Liverpool in the family home's basement. After Pete was booted out, the club sort of died down and was closed. It remained sealed up for many, many years, until it was opened. Original murals done by the Beatles still on the walls, microphones, and other items were found, and the club reopened to people who wish to come and see the only remaining original club, with even the original walls! Let the Cavern try to claim that! Color photos, inside stories, more make this a sensational book. Beatle fans, Merseybeat fans, music historians, Scousers, etc...BUY IT!

Cradle of Anglo-Rock History
By BeatleBangs1964
A fascinating book about the inception of the Beatles, or "pre-Beatle" era, if you will. The beautiful archival photographs will certainly delight all readers as well as the memorabilia. Readers will certainly get a feel for early-1960s Liverpool (1960-62) and the environment in which the Beatles flourished.

Thanks to this book, fans can actually see the club where the Beatles' fame was soon launched. The world's number one band cut their musical teeth in the Casbah, owned and run by drummer Pete Best's mother, Mona Best. The club opened in 1959 when the Quarrymen-Silver Beatles were coming into their own. This underground rock club was the precursor to its American counterparts such as the Hard Rock Cafe and the Fillmore East and Fillmore West, to name three.

This fresh perspective of Beatle history includes Mona Best's story as well as other members of the Best family. Pete Best, the Beatles' first drummer was unceremoniously ousted from the band in August of 1962. Ringo Starr replaced him and the rest is, well, history. Fans will undoubtedly feel as if they are watching the Beatles evolve from relative local obscurity into the musical juggernaut they became and remain to this day.

Great combo of art and history
By A O Cazola
The Beatles: True Beginnings is the latest installment in the ever-growing genre of Beatles histories and essential collectibles for diehard fans. Where some of these, though, seem like quick cash grabs, this book is truly an incedible document of the Beatles early years at the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool.
Filled with hundreds of beautiful archival photos of the lads and brand new, full-colour arts shots of memorabilia and the club's interior, The Beatles: True Beginnings is the authoritative work on the club that launched the Mersey Beat.
For the first time in forty years, Beatles fans can finally get an inside look at the club where the Beatles became the world's greatest rock band. Originally started in 1959 by Mona Best (mother of former Beatles drummer Pete Best), the Casbah Coffee Club was an underground rock club in the heart of Liverpool where everyone who was anyone went to see the city's greatest bands.
Written by the Best family, this new book is both the story of a remarkable woman and a celebration of forty years of Beatles history, from their earliest days as The Quarrymen up to their crowning as the kings of rock. Alternating between illustrated narrative and beautifully shot, full-colour art photographs, The Beatles: True Beginnings is an essential part of any Beatles fan's library.

Let the squeamish beware!

Watch Your F*cking Language takes a no-holds-barred approach to taboo words and expressions. It shows you how to use them to your advantage -- and have fun doing so. Building on the lessons learned in English as a Second F*cking Language, this book emphasizes traditional English swears as well as powerful (and hidden) expressions from other cultures and languages.

Through numerous examples, it puts the real language of real people into context:

FLOYD: I just heard a Dan Quayle speech. It was really f*cking confusing.
RUBY: I just got back from a Mongolian cluster f*ck. It was really confusing f*cking.

The name of the game is communication, and Watch Your F*cking Language shows readers how to hammer home their messages with confidence and gusto.

Among its features:

*Numerous examples of proper (and so-called improper) usage
*An Idioms section that emphasizes the niceties of swearing
*A "Need to Know, "Nice to Know," and "Forget It" system for identifying swear words
*A Final F*cking Exam

Give this guy a Bronx cheer!!
By Robert M. Miskimon
Once again, Dr. Johnson has elucidated some of the darkest (and funniest) corners of the human mind and human speech. His "grasp" of the language is impressive, his "ear" for subtleties true, and his "delivery" powerful and overwhelming. I think Dr. Johnson should start an Institute for Correct Speech, Thinking and Living. His example shines before the world like a beacon of sanity in the darkness of this gloomy age.

A GREAT BOOK!
By Jennifer Morrison
This is a sweet and funny read--truly humorous, and filled with many tongue-in-cheek gags. It's not set up in the typical essay format of most humor books. Instead it's done as a dream dictionary, which allows it to poke fun at all the celebrity icons that seem to inundate our media--and, yes, I guess our dreams. I've bought a couple as funny birthday gifts for my girlfriends who are into namedropping...because they will certainly get it!

Loved this book
By Helen of Troy
I'm a person who loves fashion and clothes, and this book was given to me as a gift from a friend who often teases me about this. The book is set up like a dream dictionary, although it's more tongue-in-cheek & not to be taken too seriously! The author's many pop-cultural interpretations of dreams tickle the funny bone. I highly recommend it as a beach book, or just to keep on the bedside table for quick & fun reading anytime.

Bissell uses the same chronological format and mentor-based system that have made Law School Confidential and Business School Confidential such treasured and popular guides. It takes the reader step-by-step through the entire med school process--from thinking about, applying to, and choosing a medical school and program, through the four-year curriculum, internships, residencies, and fellowships, to choosing a specialty and finding the perfect job.
With a foreword by Chair of the Admissions Committee at Dartmouth Medical School Harold M. Friedman, M.D., Med School Confidential provides what no other book currently does: a comprehensive, chronological account of the full medical school experience.

From Publishers Weekly
Miller, author of Law School Confidential and Business School Confidential has teamed with Bissel, a doctor of emergency medicine, for the latest entry. A guide for readers thinking about attending medical school, or in the early stages of beginning an M.D., Miller and Bissell begin upbeat: "It's hard to argue with a career choice that allows you to save lives, or at least improve them every day." The arduous and complicated seven-to-ten year path they lay out, however, is another story. Reading the book straight through may do more to discourage readers than to help them on their way, but Miller and Bissell are clear and thorough, from undergraduate pre-med work to med school applications to grueling med school coursework to the various standardized tests, clinical duties and internships until, finally, the all-important career choice: where to spend your residency. Comments from several young practicing doctors ("Med School Confidential Mentors") don't illuminate much, and the authors can resort to banal generalizations that are little help: "The key is not knowing what you want to do, but what kind of person you want to become.". This book reveals very little of the personal, emotional journey of becoming a doctor, but as an overview of the academic rigors of the med student life, this guide is top-notch.

medical student or want to be one? you need this book
By Mai. A
I loved this book, I start this year and I was kind of confused since the whole college regimen is different now and I needed an overall outline or overview of what to expect what should I do, this book covers it. although it mainly speaks about medicine in the US which can be different than other countries regarding admission, test, and curriculum outlines for preclinical years. for me its system blocks, like cardiology block will cover all anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, ..etc. then next block is another system. but in the book they explained as first year would be anatomy biochem physiology embryology..etc and second year pharmacology pathology..
but I've benefited form the learning techniques and time management tips and overall medical student lifestyle

Great read for someone interested in med school
By D. Vrecko
I bought this book with the hopes that it could be of some insight as to whether or not med school would be for me. After reading it, I can say that it was that and much more. Not only did I get what seems to be an acurate portrayal of what it takes to get into med school and the road to being a doctor, but also extremely practical ideas and tools to help be successful on every major step along the way. The writing was clear and concise and seemed to be geared towards an extreme usefulness for a serious med student or potential med student. I will be applying for med school and reading this book along the way to help me excel through it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone seriously considering med school or who is in med school and would like some useful pointers on how to choose your clinical rotations, pre-pare well for the USMLEs, apply for residencies, etc.

EDIT March 2010:
I am in my first year of medical school and I still fully endorse this book. I can finally say from the other side of the application, that it was very helpful in the application process. I have lent out this book to a number of friends interested in the idea of pursuing medicine and they seem to have appreciated the content as well.

Paradise Fields, by Katie Fforde

It's not as if Nel Innes doesn't have enough on her plate already: keeping track of her unnervingly beautiful teenage daughter, sorting out a house full of animals, and organizing a farmers' market in the picturesque Paradise Fields. The last thing she needs is yet another complication in her life, but when her old friend Sir Gerald dies, and his son, Pierce, accompanied by his glamorous American wife, takes possession of the property, it seems that preserving the Fields is not on his list of priorities.

Nel takes up arms, determined to fight for the meadow and the market she loves. But who can she trust? She's pretty sure her friends Sacha and Vivian are on her side, but her sensible boyfriend of six months, Simon, an estate agent, is less encouraging. And then there's Jake, the infuriating yet attractive stranger who surprised her with a kiss under the mistletoe at the last market before Christmas. Maybe she's been a celibate widow for a little too long....

From Publishers Weekly
Romance blooms for a long-celibate widow in this cozy potboiler by British hen-lit veteran Fforde (Highland Fling; etc.). Nel Innes has kept busy in the 10 years since her beloved husband died, raising her three children (the youngest of whom, 18-year-old daughter Fleur, is growing up far too fast for Nel's taste), taking care of the family's many dogs and organizing a farmer's market in the town's Paradise Fields. But when local bigwig Sir Gerald dies, leaving his estate (and the connecting land that a hospice uses for recreation and fund-raising) to his developer son, Pierce, and Pierce's sexy American wife, Kerry Anne, Nel is furious—how dare these soulless big-city chumps take away the land the hospice so desperately needs? And how, fueled by righteous anger as she is, can she find herself falling so hard for the couple's dashing and equally big-city solicitor, Jake Demerand? Though Fforde's plots are often rather similar—smalltown woman fights the good fight and wins, falling in love with a man she initially deems an opponent—charming, lovable secondary characters carry the day, and funny scenes such as Nel going undercover to track Fleur to a trendy nightclub are by turns poignant and hilarious. This sweet literary equivalent of warm fuzzy slippers will help bring Fforde, who has a sizable following in Britain, further onto American radar.

From Booklist
Fforde's heroines are usually spunky, can-do types who spend their days cheerfully sorting out the dilemmas of others. Nel Innis fits the standard quite nicely but in her own way is quite different from previous incarnations. A widow for 10 years, she has raised her three nearly adult children on her own. They, along with the family dogs, vast numbers of friends, and multiple charitable interests, have filled her life quite well, if chastely, until now. In comes Jake Demerand, mysterious, fearfully attractive, and, unfortunately, working as the lawyer representing the opposition in a land battle that threatens her most valued causes. Paradise Fields is in the Cotswolds, the site of a hospice for seriously ill children and a seasonal farmer's market. The current owner wants to build houses. Development is inevitable; how it will be done is the issue that Nel takes on. Will she succeed? What happens with Jake? More passionately sexual than some of Fforde's previous novels, this is nevertheless diverting in its own very British way. Danise Hoover

Very Nice Read
By G. Greene
The first word that comes to mind after reading this novel is "pleasant" (a vastly underrated adjective IMHO). I haven't read this author before, and it was such a nice experience to read a book that was more about ordinary people, trying to live their lives as best they could, than about plot machinations and torrid sex scenes every other page (not that there's anything wrong with that). One comes to care about these characters and sympathize with their struggles of having to compromise about a real estate development, acknowledging that the children are really growing up and parents are really growing old.

So if you are looking for a well written book with strong character development, this book's the ticket. Nicely done!

Far from paradise
By Digby
My initial reaction was that perhaps this was one of Ms. Fforde's early works before she perfected her craft, or an attempt at writing something "screenplay-worthy," because it was contrived, too cute, and the characters were ridiculous. I've read and enjoyed two books by Ms. Fforde - "Stately Pursuits" and "Wild Designs" - so I knew her style, but "Paradise Fields" was just too hard to take. Nel has been dating a man for six months, and has known him for years, but they've never had sex, and he's never indicated an interest in it. Really? Her daughter and friends all dislike the boyfriend; he seems to dislike Nel's children, her parenting style and her [lack of] housekeeping; and she doesn't really seem to enjoy his company [see - dating for six months with no sex] - but she keeps him around because he fixes things around her house? Every novel doesn't have to be a feminist manifesto, but please. And all of the "meet-cute" scenes with Jake just grow tiresome - of course, he runs the soccer league, and of course he's somehow involved in an incident in which a soccer ball ends up in an elaborate cake she has baked, and of course he and some colleagues run into her in London (must be a much smaller city than I thought). These incidents just seemed made for a movie - which isn't necessarily bad, but didn't play out well on the page. And Nel constantly - and I mean, constantly - disparages her looks and weight, when everyone else in the world, including hunky, younger-man Jake, thinks she's gorgeous. Between her willingness to have a loveless, sexless relationship with a guy she doesn't seem to like (but, hey, at least he buys her dinner occasionally), and her inability to see how gorgeous she apparently is, I thought she desperately needed some therapy. Hmm, guess I didn't like this book...

If you like european romances...
By A. Pennington
Nel has been a widow for ten years and is comfortable with life in her little village. Her two sons are at university and her daughter is almost finished high school. She is determined to remain unmarried until her children are independent so she has no complaints about her stuffy boyfriend, Simon, although her children do not like him and she never has lustful thoughts about him. She keeps busy with charity activities to support a local hospice. She is not bothered about the fact that she has not had sex since her husband died so Nel is surprised when a handsome younger man kisses her at the Christmas fair.

Nel is working hard to save Paradise Fields, the estate where she organizes a farmers market which supports the hospice. The new owners want to develop the land for cheap housing. Nel meets with the owners to oppose the development and discovers that their lawyer is Jake, the man who kissed her. Jake tries to date Nel, but she cannot believe a handsome London lawyer is interested in a plump, older woman and suspects he is just trying to get her to agree to the development plans.

When she ends up in Jake's bed one night, Nel puts it down to a mistake, but Jake keeps pursuing her and even seems to be trying to help her save Paradise Fields. Then Simon asks her to marry him and encourages her to agree to the development plan.
