Howard Hughes: The Secret Life, by Charles Higham

His wealth was legendary. His passions were bizarre. Now, the truth about the money, the madness, and the man behind the enigma.

Howard Hughes is one of the best known and least understood men of our times--famed for his wealth, his daring, and his descent into madness. Bestselling biographer Charles Higham goes beyond the enigma to reveal the incredible private life of Howard Hughes:

* his romances with the great stars of Hollywood--Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, and numerous others
* his forays into sadomasochism
* his involvement with Richard Nixon and Watergate
* his bizarre final years

This is a compelling portrait of a unique American figure--in a story as revealing as it is unforgettable.

From Publishers Weekly
Though the author claims he aims to show his subject's "crucial role not only in aviation and movie-making but in major political affairs," this gossipy book mainly concerns the bisexual lusts and personal quirks of Howard Hughes (1905-1976). In sometimes overwrought style, Higham, biographer of Katherine Hepburn and Errol Flynn, describes how the eccentric tycoon, who backed such films as The Outlaw , indulged his sexual tastes on screen, how his favors for the CIA (e.g., leasing a Bahamian island as a base for dirty tricks in Cuba) aided his companies, Hughes Tool and Hughes Aircraft, and how he bought large chunks of Las Vegas in 1967. Hughes apparently spent six-hour stretches on the toilet, made humiliating demands of his bodyguards and stashed underage starlets in isolated, elegant houses in Bel Air and Beverly Hills. While some of Higham's contentions are buttressed by witnesses, some of the most incendiary--such as his claim that Hughes's sexuality was malformed as a teenager, when his uncle seduced him; that Hughes may have died of AIDS; and that Hughes played a key role in the Watergate break-in--are speculative. Photos not seen by PW. First serial to National Enquirer.

From Kirkus Reviews
An outing of the billionaire closet bisexual by Higham, whose bios include lives of Cary Grant, Brando, Orson Welles, the Duchess of Windsor, and L.B. Mayer, among others. Higham does his research an injustice by insisting on printing much sexual hearsay as fact (and hinting that Hughes died of an AIDS-like disease), especially since he has done as much homework on Hughes's business and monetary activities as he did on Wallis Windsor and Mayer. The first half of Hughes's life fascinates with his immense network of seductions as he forms one movie company to assuage his voyeuristic needs and buys another to continue them- -while also running Hughes Tool, TWA, and other businesses--and meanwhile breaking an around-the-world aircraft speed record and building the gigantic Spruce Goose military transport (a white elephant of no use whatsoever). This is all before his psychic collapse into fear of large-scale germ warfare via Kleenex, a mental illness that Higham suggests Hughes picked up from his mother, a monumental cleanliness nut. As for the bisexual hearsay, Higham says he got it from Lawrence Quirk, nephew of Photoplay publisher James Quirk, who got it straight from Hughes's bisexual uncle Rupert Hughes, who got it from Hughes himself during a confessional outpouring. Higham says that Hughes's ``sexual partners were not so much lovers as hostages, prisoners or victims of his will; he had to dominate in everything.'' The author tells of Hughes's descent into Hollywood S&M, and as for his news about Hughes paying off Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon: It may not be new, but it comes strongly documented. The recluse's last years are...ripe--he even takes to storing his urine in Mason jars. Undeniably a hypnotic portrait of a great American monster. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Oh, how cute I am, I know dirty words
By Karl May
This is one book about Howard Hughes that should be returned to the book seller if bought without reading it first. The author, an Englishman, apparently tries to be "popular" in America by being clinically dirty. His "shocking" revelations have no references, and he seems to be a grand master of the "he undoubtedly said..." school of research. The book certainly does not belong in a family library, and as far as university libraries go, it has no scholarly value.

How does this stuff get published?
By M. Guernon
Like many new readers to the Hughes tale, I picked up Howard Hughes: The Secret Life (the bookstore was out of Citizen Hughes). Given the preface and afterword of the book, associating itself to the Martin Scosese film,The Aviator, I was misled to think it would be a correspondingly detailed and insightful account of Hughes successes and personal demons (with words instead of pictures). Instead it was the worst sort of puerile incoherence; the caliber of literature which is often hailed in bathroom stalls and tea parties. In fact, I was a bit surprised not to see "Hughes Eats It!", or "For a good time call HH" somewhere in the book.

The events are not approached with any linear semblance and dates and events bounce back and forth. There is very little structure to the varied liasons attributed to Hughes, and none of them offer a scintilla of insight as to why Hughes was engaged in them, and how it affected his business, reputation, etc. The author has, a particularly, hard time working, a comma, into a sentence, with any literary aptitude. Some of his conjectures are simple falisity and are in direct opposition to verified accounts, in numerous text (see his insinuation of what when on at San Simeon....in short that type of open behavior was forbidden at the Hearst Castle and violators were sent packing (literally)-not to say that it didn't happen, but not at the level Mr. Higman suggests. Additionally he fails to properly index the book, leading references off the index altogether. Stylistically, formatting and content wise this book falls harder then Hughes on Bell Air Drive.

It almost seems that Mr. Higham had something personal against Mr. Hughes (and certainly had a lot of choices to pick from). But an academic interest of Hughes is not served in this book. What might be served is an author's personalized attempt to denigrate a sick man, using conjecture, pubescent embellishments, and sexually charged schedenfreude. He's happy to take care of that on his own.

The APA might concider how this books simply demonizes the effects of OCD, as opposed to helping society understand it. An easy misunderstanding of this book, and one would think all OCD people are bisexual bigamists, who are facinated with their own urine, and have an unatural fetish with Kleenex.

This work might have been amusing article to read in the grocery check-out line, and put down without buying it. (Given it's an easy read, you might finish the whole book before your eggs are secured under your gallon of milk) Having made the mistake of buying it, please consider some advice that a better account of Hughes is out there...somewhere. Don't do what I did. Instead, go to another bookstore and look for a more credible biography. Or if salacious gossip, blissfully free from fact is really what your after...don't buy this book either. By something by Bob Woodward, or heck, just buy the Enquiror

or.....maybe Mad Magazine....I hear the Star is good too.

Not worth the space in my seabag
By mel118
I picked this up at a sale for $1.50; I should have kept that cash. I am a huge fan of biographies, since you learn not only about that person, but also about the history going on in the world at that time. This book is not very good in any way. It lacks the basic academic credentials you would expect a high school research paper to have. "Facts" are thrown out with no footnotes, no sources, and usually have no meaning. This is a private individual who affected America's course through aviation, interactions and influence on the CIA, Nixon, etc. His father invented, and Hughes furthered, the drill bit upon which billions has been made, and entire countries shaped based on that oil revenue. Yet this drill bit is mentioned as an aside, since the author needs to focus on supposed homosexual encounters with actors. Honestly, I can't believe this book was published. It's a gossip rag thrown together in order to make a buck. I deploy to Afghanistan every other year and always bring a ton of books with me, usually softcover so I can leave them behind in the USO or airports for other service-members. I don't even want this in my house on my bookshelf. This is not because of the salaciousness in its pages, but rather I don't want my teenage son to read this book and think this is how an academic writes a book - it is all rumors, innuendo, and insignificant details. So many historic events happened during this time - Prohibition, WWI, WWII, Great Depression, Vietnam, etc. Yet this book glosses over these events, failing to investigate in detail the influence of Hughes on these events.

Argh, I am annoyed I bought this book and took it with me overseas. What a waste of space in my seabag! I forced myself to read 50 straight pages, then flipped through the rest hoping to find some references, footnotes, or something to save it. Nada. This is going in the burn pit, not the USO's bookshelf.

In Boston, a disgraced medical student is sent to deliver a research paper that could save her career. . . . Four thousand miles away, in a jungle hospital in Cameroon, a brilliant, reclusive scientist, dying from an incurable disease that threatens to make each tortured breath his last, is on the verge of perfecting a serum that could save millions of lives, and bring others inestimable wealth. . . . In Chicago, a disillusioned private detective, on the way to his third career, is hired to determine the identify of a John Doe, killed on a Florida highway, with mysterious marks on his body.
Three seemingly disconnected lives, surging unrelentingly toward one another. Three lives becoming irrevocably intertwined. Three lives in mounting peril, moving ever closer to the ultimate confrontation against a deadly secret society with godlike aspirations and roots in antiquity.

Three lives linked forever by a single vial of blood--the fifth vial.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Palmer (The Society) tackles the illegal transplant organ trade in his entertaining 12th medical suspense novel. What do three very different people—Harvard medical student Natalie Reyes, Chicago PI Ben Callahan and scientific genius Joe Anson—have in common? Natalie, in Brazil for a conference, is attacked, hospitalized and loses a lung; Ben gets hired to discover how a mutilated anonymous body died; Joe, the inventor of an untested medical breakthrough, is forced into an operation for his life-threatening pulmonary fibrosis. All three seek answers connected to the Whitestone Foundation, a conglomerate that's a front for the Guardians, a secret cabal of medical specialists. At a hidden hospital in the Brazilian rain forest, Natalie and Ben learn of the Guardians' insidious methods. Huge sums are at stake as the arrogant Guardians make medical decisions largely motivated by greed. The action, which begins plausibly, becomes less so as the tension builds. Still, Palmer, himself an M.D., does a good job of informing the reader on an important ethical issue. 225,000 printing; author tour. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Palmer is adept at tapping into people's natural fear of disease, doctors, and hospitals and converting that fear into unnerving suspense. In this, his twelfth medical thriller, Palmer plays with the phenomenon of organ donation, forcing the reader to ask nervously, "Where do donated organs come from?" The answer comes slowly, in the best medical-thriller tradition, by having three different characters, widely separated by space and circumstance, each play a role in tracking down a powerful conspiracy network. Natalie Reyes, a brilliant Harvard Medical School student, is summarily dismissed for disagreeing with a doctor. In one of the many wild stretches of the plot, Natalie goes to Rio de Janeiro to present a paper and is kidnapped and left for dead. In another stretch, a newly minted Chicago private eye is hired by a University of Chicago medical anthropologist to conduct an investigation into underworld organ trafficking. Meanwhile, in Yaounde, Cameroon, a doctor is refining a drug that can speed the formation of new blood vessels, but--slight problem--he's racing the clock against his own life-threatening illness. The sprawling plot lurches along toward the discovery of a conspiracy to obtain organs by any means and sell them at high prices. The characterization is wooden and the plotting clunky, but Palmer's fans know not to worry overmuch about such niceties. If medical thrills are what you're after, he delivers. Connie Fletcher

Could this happen?  Palmer makes you think so."--Sandra Brown, author of Ricochet

"The Fifth Vial is a nail-biting thriller you don't want to miss."--Catherine Coulter, author of Point Blank

"Michael Palmer delivers a complex plot, fascinating characters, and plenty of action. The Fifth Vial is a roller-coaster ride that winds its way through the United States, Africa, India, and Brazil on the way to a terrific surprise ending."--Phillip Margolin, author of Proof Positive

Palmer's Best Yet!
By Leslie Spencer
The Fifth Vial is a compelling, frightening and thought-provoking novel (although it's written with such intelligence and authority that one can almost believe it is true) about the dangers in our society of greed and arrogance concerning organ donation. Palmer's characters -- his protagonist Natalie Reyes, a medical student, Ben Callahan, a disillusioned detective, and Dr. Joe Anson, a passionate scientist -- are sensitively written and realistic.

This fast-paced story takes place in Boston, Chicago, Brazil and Africa, with a Machiavellian plot full of hidden twists and turns. As a physician, Michael Palmer's expertise in the field of medicine makes The Fifth Vial a stimulating and highly enjoyable read. Highly recommended!

Attorney Calvin Dexter hangs his shingle in a quiet New Jersey town, has a reasonably successful practice, and takes the hills strong while triathalon training. But Dexter is no ordinary man.

***

The summer before he goes to college, Ricky Colenso travels to Bosnia to volunteer as an aid worker. A few weeks later, he disappears and is never heard from again. A family grieves and is offered little hope--in the fog of that horrible time and place, the killer, too, has vanished.

***

Or so it would seem. For in a world that has forgotten right and wrong, there are few like Cal Dexter who can settle the score. And so, years later, a worldwide chase is on and Dexter begins to draw a net around the killer. But this time CIA agent Paul Devereux must find a way to stop Dexter before his quest for vengeance throws the world into chaos.

***

A heart-stopping novel of murder and mystery, double-cross and triple-cross, old loyalties and new hatreds, Avenger has all of Frederick Forsyth's page-turning trademarks.

From Publishers Weekly
"The master is back," the promo goes, "with his best thriller since The Day of the Jackal." A bold statement: while no Jackal, this strong and memorable novel is his best in decades, and as good as The Odessa File and The Dogs of War. It is the story of vigilante Cal Dexter's pursuit of a Serbian warlord into the jungles of the fictional Republic of San Martin. Dexter, former Vietnam tunnel rat, now small-town attorney and clandestine kidnapper of refugees from justice, is after Zoran Zilic, a gangster who has escaped Serbia with a fortune but not before savagely killing an American aid worker who happens to be the grandson of a billionaire mining magnate. It's the magnate who sets in motion the operation against Zilic, first through a man known as "The Tracker," who locates him, then via the Avenger, whose task is to bring Zilic to American justice. But Zilic is protected in his South American jungle compound not only by the best security money can buy but also by a top FBI man who plans to use the warlord to help take out a dangerous terrorist named Usama bin Laden; much of the narrative takes place within weeks of 9/11, and is laced with irony. Forsyth fans won't be surprised that the action, always exciting, is supported by numerous briefings on matters geopolitical, historical and scientific; with Jackal, Forsyth established the now traditional formula of thrillers that educate as well as entertain. The digressions are frequent early on but no page lacks interest and the novel's second half, which focuses on the Avenger's attempted snatch of Zilic, is pure gold. This will hit bestseller lists high and hard and a sequel seems likely.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The Day of the Jackal, The Dogs of War, The Odessa File--these Forsyth blockbusters helped define the international conspiracy thriller. Forsyth's newest novel, his fourteenth, could well return him to those lofty heights. Once again, his crisp narration leads readers through labyrinths of criminal and espionage plots and through land mines of warfare, historical, contemporary, and threatening (the book stops on September 10, 2001). One of the amazing features of Forsyth's writing is the way he spotlights seemingly random, unconnected events, usually involving armed conflict, and then gradually weaves them all together into a seamless plot. This time out, World War II, Vietnam, Bosnia, and Cambodia take turns commanding center stage, held together by two protagonists: a middle-aged lawyer and an aging business tycoon, who have both suffered devastating losses. The tycoon's loss, that of his grandson on a relief mission in Bosnia, becomes subsumed in the mission of attorney Calvin Dexter, grieving father and former 'Nam tunnel rat, whose mission in life is to bring justice to those who have gotten away with murder. Perhaps the most fascinating part of the book is the in-depth chronicle (based on real-life stories of surviving veterans) of the excruciating, perilous work of the tunnel rats in ferreting out the Vietcong in their vast underground lairs. Forsyth's extraordinary care with detail, his solid voice, and his exquisite pacing make this a totally engrossing thriller. Connie Fletcher

Forsyth has done better
By Amazon Customer
Many people will buy this book, as I did, based on Forsyth's past successful writings. And perhaps he deserves to be rewarded for The Dogs of War, The Odessa File, and The Day of the Jackal. But buy the book on that basis, a reward for past efforts, not because this is a good read. Because it isn't.
Because the protagonist is American, and a lot of the narrative takes place among Americans or on our soil, Forsyth has a vehicle for presenting his political views, something I don't like in any novel, where one is able to present fiction as an underpinning for a belief system.
As for the story, Forsyth's ego as an insider privy to state secrets is laughingly portrayed. Republicans are heroes. Democrats are villians, or at least fools. And who hasn't heard of the tunnel rats of Vietnam, that Forsyth says are unknown to most of us. Heck, there's even a tourist attraction in Vietnam that takes people down into the tunnels.
But the most annoying parts of Avenger are those action scenes that work out JUST PERFECT for the protagonist. An area is searched except for the one place our hero is hiding. The villain takes a plane at just the right time. A friend is ordered into several positions to help out just where he is needed. A search is made among all embassies except the one where the fortunate hero gets his visa. A federal holiday occurs just when needed.
You'll find the rest of these many lucky coincidences if you are kind enough (to Forsyth), rich enough, and not busy enough, to buy and read Avenger.

Another great story
By B. Dench
Though nothing could equal The Day of the Jackal, Forsyth continues to spin a great story. Unlike some similar writers his tales are plausible and well knit. This story also provides a clear explanation of the Balkans war of Bill Clinton and co.

Absolutely enthralling

One of the best I have read. Starts out interesting, moves to intriguing, and rockets to unbelievable. More twists than a snake on a hot highway. Anyone who likes adventure will not put it down.

Not worth it...
By PDX
I bought this thinking it would have some new positions, new ideas, etc...I mean, it is NAMED "The Lesbian Kama Sutra". It has nothing of the sort, unless you mean 7 positions anyone would know. It doesn't even include the other 10 that any good lesbian should already know, as well. This book might be good for a 15 year old just figuring out they might be a lesbian. And even then, a book that enforces stereotypes really wasn't what I wanted to see when I was 15. The point is, if you're looking for a Lesbian Kama Sutra, don't buy this book.

proof that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
By J. Lee Valentine
this book simply does not deliver. it may be more appealing to a more mature reader who is just discovering her sexuality. as a lesbian in my late twenties, i found this book laughable. but not in a good way. some of the historical information provided was interesting, but overall i consider the material dated, largely irrelevant and not even minimally entertaining. do not purchase this book in hopes of learning new sexual techniques or to gain a revolutionary insight into your sexual identity or relationship.

The title is very misleading. Also there are some pretty drawings inside. Besides that don't buy it,you are probably better off cutting a mango in 2 and learning from that.

White Sister: A Shane Scully Novel (Shane Scully Novels), by Stephen J. Cannell

Back from the New York Times bestselling Cold Hit, Detective Shane Scully goes up against the beautiful, blonde wife of powerful hip-hop mogul--who stands at the center of a ruthless conspiracy

Leaving L.A.'s Parker Center, Shane Scully and his wife, Alexa, agree to meet at home in one hour.  Shane gets there; Alexa doesn't.

This tale turns deadly, when in the middle of the night, he's called to a crime scene on Mulholland Drive, where the victim, who appears to be a gang member has been handcuffed and executed, gangland style.  What's worse is that the victim's body is in Alexa's car.  Her service revolver, which Shane discovers nearby, is probably the murder weapon.  But Alexa is missing.

As Shane desperately tries to find his wife, his leads take him into the frightening world of gangsta rap music and into the center of a feud between two record companies, both heavily manned by Crips and Bloods.  At the center of this war is one of the most lethal adversaries he's ever encountered: Stacy Maluga, a trashy, beautiful Lady Macbeth-like white woman raised in Compton, married to a multi-millionaire rap mogul and known in the gangsta hip-hop world as the White Sister.

Shane is no stranger to big trouble, but he's never had to face being a cop in jail with a hit out on him, while being smeared by urban activists as a "racist cop."  Much, much worse than all that is the potential death of his beloved wife, Alexa.  In the White Sister, he may have met his match in a powerful and media-savvy enemy who will stop at nothing to forge her own criminal empire.

From Publishers Weekly
With his frenetic fifth Shane Scully novel, bestseller Cannell (Cold Hit) dishes out the action in forklift-sized servings. Casting aside the rules like never before, LAPD detective Scully conducts his own seek-and-destroy mission after his wife, fellow cop Alexa, is found shot in the head. As Alexa clings to life, Scully's efforts to track down her attacker lead him into the violent, vengeful world of rap music, lorded over by two of its most feared executives, Lou Maluga and his wife, Stacy, known in the trade as "the white sister." Without pause to sleep or eat, Scully fights and claws his way along, burning friends, violating laws, using his charm as well as his fists before coming face to face with his enemy in Las Vegas. Cannell's hard-boiled, if at times over-rehearsed prose is well suited to his subject matter, though some readers may have trouble with his hero's tendency to suddenly shift character from tough guy to touchy-feely 21st-century man. The Perils of Pauline Has Nothing on Shane Scully
By John R. Linnell
Cannell is an interesting writer and his novels are always worth reading.

Shane Scully is an LAPD detective. His wife is in the LAPD also in a supervisory position. His tight little comfortable world is about to become very unraveled when his wife fails to be where she said she would and her automobile is found with an LAPD cop in it, killed execution style with her handcuffs on him. She is missing and later calls him to indicate she is sorry for what she has done and that there is only one way out...a BANG follows the message.

He figures out where she is and she is transported to a hospital, her life hannging by a thread.

Scully then proceeds to break most laws in the book with respect to investigating the situation and is eventually himself arrested.

How this scenario is set up is eventually and slowly revealed and I won't share any secrets except to say that you know this writer is not going to have one of his stars heading to prison for life. How that is avoided is a tight, frothy read.

A new character is revealed in this book....name of John Bodine...you won't forget him.

I like Shane Scully, but this is a lousy novel
By J. Norburn
Part One: The part you can read if you haven't read the novel

White Sister is the third Shane Scully novel I've read and it is easily the worst (I enjoyed Cold Hit and Vertical Coffin). I was surprised to find that I'm the only reader so far to trash the novel. (I guess I'll be getting a lot of negative responses to my review)

I'm a fan of Shane Scully and I like Cannell's writing (which is why the novel warrants two stars rather than one) but the bottom line is - this is a pretty lousy novel. My biggest complaint is that the novel's premise makes no sense. Scully operates so far outside the law that it's as if Cannell were writing a script for the next James Cameron or Michael Bay summer blockbuster. Shane's wife gets shot and spends most of the novel in a coma and even though we have a pretty good idea how things are going to work out, we have to suffer though pages of contrived melodrama. Add to this a collection of cartoonish rap music characters and a silly shoot out in the Nevada desert and you have a novel to avoid.

Part Two: ***Don't read the rest of this review unless you've read the novel or you don't care if I ruin the plot for you (although Cannell ruined it long before I got involved)***

First off, let me say that I don't mind if a novel is a little unrealistic. I don't care if the hero has a gun that never runs out of bullets or the killer doesn't die no matter how many times he is shot, stabbed, and bludgeoned. What really irks me is when characters in a novel behave in ways that don't make any sense and is clearly an artificial construct of the author to support a plot that can't possibly stand on its own.

1. The emails between Alexa and Dark Angel are pivotal to the plot, but they are ridiculous. If they are worried about someone reading the email messages, why not just call from a pay phone? It would be safer and allow for a better exchange of information. There was no reason to think the Malugas were bugging phones or screening emails (or even had the skill to do such a thing). Even then, the code wouldn't have done much good. Shane didn't understand the code initially because he wasn't familiar with the names of the rap music acts and rap slang, but if the Malugas had read the emails they would have understood them immediately. So why bother?

The answer: Cannell needs Shane to find the emails and then doubt his wife. It allows everyone to think that Dark Angel is a bad cop and that his murder is linked to an affair with Alexa. This means that Shane is the only person who can clear Alexa's good name.

2. The Chief of Police knows that Dark Angel is a good cop working under cover and that the affair with Alexa is a fabrication, but he holds his tongue. Why? Because he can't compromise another under cover cop in the Maluga organization. BUT this makes no sense. If the Malugas killed Dark Angel because they knew he was an undercover cop reporting to Alexa how could it hurt to reveal this information in the press? It wouldn't be news to the Malugas. They already knew Dark Angel was a cop. The other undercover cop may be in danger (since Dark Angel brought him in to the Maluga operation) but he was in danger the moment the Maluga's found out who Dark Angel was.

The answer: Cannell needs everyone in the Department to be against Shane so he can do his rogue cop thing. If the Department admitted that Dark Angel was undercover it would defuse the racial angle, remove the suspicion from Alexa and allow the investigating cops to turn their attention to the Malugas. If this happened, Shane could go to the hospital and be with his wife, staying out of trouble. Not much of a novel there.

These are my two biggest beefs but trust me the list is endless. My advice: Don't read it. The other two Scully novels I've read are much better. White Sister is a contrived mess.

Melodrama and clichés ad nauseum ad infinitum
By D. Obryant
While I have always thought that Stephen Cannell's "Shane Scully" novels were easily beyond plausibility, I have always enjoyed them just the same. White Sister, however, was a chore to get through. I often found myself skipping to the next paragraph or two each time he gets his "soliloquy" on. With astounding frequency, the main character begins to wax poetic about ______ (you fill in the blank) to the point that you expect him to break into a West-Side-Story-esque song and dance.

The "I know I lied to you five times and broke my promises to you three times in the past 10 minutes, but trust me this time." bit got quite old.

There were a lot of little worn out constructs and clichés used repeatedly, time after time, over and over again, and repetitively throughout the book.

What would it take to turn you into a suicide bomber?

How would you interrogate a member of Al Qaeda?

With access to formerly classified documentation and interviews from the CIA, the U.S. Army, MI5, MI6, and the British Intelligence Corps, acclaimed journalist Dominic Streatfeild traces the history of the world's most secret psychological procedure.

From the cold war to the height of today's war on terror, groups as dissimilar as armies, religious cults, and advertising agencies have been accused of brainwashing. But what does this mean?

Is it possible to erase memories or to implant them artificially? Do heavy-metal records contain subliminal messages? Do religious cults brainwash recruits? What were the CIA and MI6 doing with LSD in the 1950s? How far have the world's militaries really gone?

From the author of the definitive history of cocaine, Brainwash is required reading in an era of cutting-edge and often controversial interrogation practices. More than just an examination of the techniques used by the CIA, the KGB, and the Taliban, it is also a gripping, full history of the heated efforts to master the elusive, secret techniques of mind control.

From Booklist
Streatfeild, a documentary film producer and author of a social history of cocaine use (Cocaine: An Unauthorized Biography, 2001), offers an expansive and multifaceted exploration of brainwashing in its multitude of forms. With chapters on hypnosis, sensory deprivation, subliminal messages, religious indoctrination, and a variety of truth serums, this account chronicles the many ways psychology and pharmacology have been enlisted in people's apparently perennial effort to control the minds of other people. Steeped in cold war intrigue, Streatfeild's narrative features the CIA and other intelligence agencies heavily; tales oscillate between the absurdly hilarious (CIA director Allen Dulles dispatching two agents to Switzerland in 1953 to buy up the world's entire supply of LSD for "research") and the profoundly disturbing (CIA agents secretly dosing civilians and analyzing the results). Although the author includes some lengthy jaunts into popular culture to examine films and song lyrics, his core concern is the deadly serious business of mental torture as practiced by today's intelligence services. Sprawling, accessible, and at times quite casual, this book will attract a diverse readership. Brendan Driscoll

With access to formerly classified documentation and interviews from the CIA, the U.S. Army, MI5, MI6, and the British Intelligence Corps, acclaimed journalist Dominic Streatfeild traces the history of the world’s most secret psychological procedure.

From the cold war to the height of today’s war on terror, groups as dissimilar as armies, religious cults, and advertising agencies have been accused of brainwashing. But what does this mean?

Is it possible to erase memories or to implant them artificially? Do heavy-metal records contain subliminal messages? Do religious cults brainwash recruits? What were the CIA and MI6 doing with LSD in the 1950s? How far have the world’s militaries really gone?

From the author of the definitive history of cocaine, Brainwash is required reading in an era of cutting-edge and often controversial interrogation practices. More than just an examination of the techniques used by the CIA, the KGB, and the Taliban, it is also a gripping, full history of the heated efforts to master the elusive, secret techniques of mind control.

Praise for Brainwash

“Meticulously researched and superbly readable... acutely observed... evenhanded and even-tempered.”--The Daily Telegraph (UK)

“A gripping survey of the post-war history of interrogation techniques.”--Telegraph on Sunday (UK)

“Vivid... Streatfeild does an important service by bringing [brainwashing] to our attention again. It is especially relevant in the light of Abu Ghraib and the war on terror.”--Financial Times (UK)

“Breathless... reads like a spy thriller.”--The Guardian (UK)

“Gripping.”--Time Out (UK)

“Marvelously engrossing. This book is a series of wonderfully detailed and cleverly told stories, each of which debunks the brainwashing myth. Streatfeild’s narrative control cannot be faulted. His research is formidable.”--Sunday Times (UK)

A plethora of perky puzzles
By David J. Gore
You can't (well, I can't) love a bunch of puzzles, but you can certainly like them when they are well crafted and right in line with the type of puzzle expected for much fun and not too many headaches. Will Shortz is spot on.

A Challenge for me, maybe not for you
By C. Mundroff
I was ready to try better crafted, more challenging crossword puzzles than those by sold as "all levels of difficulty" in the chain stores. This one is tagged as "easy" but so far only 2 out of 7 have been easy for me - meaning I could finish in about 1 hour. The other 5 still have a few blanks except for the ones where I looked up crosswordtracker.com
Pros: they have three theme phrases in each puzzle that makes if fun
there are joking or punning clues sometimes that make you laugh when you finally figure them out.
I wanted a challenge - I got one
Cons: OK sometimes I get "irked" by the "opacity" of the clues.
Will Shortz is the editor and the puzzles are created by numerous contributors.
The only downside is that my husband thinks I am addicted now. I Am NOT.
