Becoming Rich: The Wealth-Building Secrets of the World's Master Investors Buffett, Icahn, Soros, by Mark Tier

Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, and George Soros all started with nothing---and made billion-dollar fortunes solely by investing. But their investment strategies are so widely divergent, what could they possibly have in common?

As Mark Tier demonstrates in this insightful book, the secrets that made Buffet, Icahn, and Soros the world's three richest investors are the same mental habits and strategies they all practice religiously. However, these are mental habits and strategies that fly in the face of Wall Street's conventional mindset. For example:

-Buffett, Icahn, and Soros do not diversify. When they buy, they buy as much as they can.

-They're not focused on the profits they expect to make. Going in, they're not investing for the money at all.

-They don't believe that big profits involve big risks. In fact, they're far more focused on not losing money than making it.

-Wall Street research reports? They never read them. They're not interested in what other people think. Indeed, Buffett says he only reads analyst reports when he needs a laugh.

In Becoming Rich you can discover how the mental habits that guided your last investment decision stack up against those of Buffett, Icahn, and Soros. Then learn exactly how you can apply the wealth-building secrets of the world's richest investors to transform your own investment results.

From Publishers Weekly
The world is full of get-rich-quick schemes, but this definitely isn't one of them. Instead, Tier, founder of World Money Analyst, a newsletter with subscribers in 119 countries, teaches readers to invest smartly by delving into the skills, philosophies and investment strategies of some of the world's richest self-made men-Warren Buffett (Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.), Carl Icahn (Ichan & Co.) and George Soros (Quantum Fund) among them. An Australian who lives in Hong Kong, Tier has written other books about finance, including Understanding Inflation and The Nature of Market Cycles, but here it's all about analyzing and replicating the habits of his idols, whom he calls "Master Investors." Part biography and part self-help, the book will appeal most to serious investors for whom investing is a near full-time job. For those enthusiasts, chapters like "The Seven Deadly Investment Sins" and "You Call That A Position" will be entertaining, and "The 23 Winning Investment Habits" in Appendix I will likely become a mantra. But even casual investors can glean some good tips from this well-organized book, which points out that the Losing Investor always aims "to make a lot of money" while the Master Investor always keeps preservation of capital as "priority No. 1."

From the Author
NOTE: Becoming Rich is the American hardcover edition of The Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett & George Soros.  St. Martins Press published it in paperback with the original title.
Except for the title, it's the same book. While writing this book, I got to know two highly successful investors very well. Part of my research was analyzing their investment habits to check the accuracy of my analysis. I also met several novice investors, analyzing their poor investment habits to contrast with the successful ones. I gave copies the manuscript to all of them, and asked them all for their comments. Here's how I expected they would react:

  • The successful investors would come back and tell me where it sucked -- where I'd made mistakes, bloopers, and so on;
  • The novice investors would use it to improve their investment results.
Boy, was I wrong! One point of clarification: just how successful were these two successful investors? Both these men had achieved independent wealth through their investing. One, then in his sixties, was twenty when he arrived on Wall Street and became a millionaire before he turned thirty -- by investing on his own account, not hustling investments to others. The second started a bit later, but was also independently wealthy. Both had made enough money from their investments to sit on their thumbs for the rest of their lives. I had learnt from them -- what could they learn from me? Nothing at all, I assumed. They both thought differently:
  • "Here is a different way of looking at the investing process. Maybe I'll learn something."
They both went through all 23 Winning Investment Habits carefully, comparing my analysis with their own behaviors. They checked the 12 components of the successful investment system against their own approach. One of them tweaked his exit strategy, based on my exposition. This is, unquestionably, the greatest compliment I've ever received on this book. Compare that reaction to that of "Henry," whose reaction was typical of several novice investors I talked with. I spent enough time with Henry to get to know him reasonably well. In his early twenties, he had accumulated about $10,000 and had been investing on the stock market for about a year. His results weren't appalling, but he'd have done better if he'd left his money in a index fund. His reaction to the manuscript: "Interesting." That's it! Did he apply the habits, or attempt to? No. Did it make him think more deeply about his strategy or anything else related to his investments? Not as far as I could tell. Did it make any difference to his life? Aside from an enjoyable read, not in any discernable way. A psychological attack on would-be traders?A few reviews of  the paperback edition (The Winning Investment Habits of Warren Buffett & George Soros) are rather, how shall I put it? -- decidedly uncomplimentary. One (on Amazon.co.uk) describes The Winning Investment Habits as a "psychological attack on would-be traders." As far as I can tell, all I did was point out that trading is far more stressful than investing. When you're under pressure, you're more likely to make mistakes. When the pressure is unrelenting, you can burn out. Traders burn out; investors don't. Even Soros burnt out; Buffett never has. Soros learnt how to deal with stress, partly by delegating some or all of the responsibility to others and acting as "coach" rather than trader. The result: he can come back into the saddle when necessary, totally refreshed. Which is exactly what he did in the middle of the financial crisis of 2008. He took back control of his Quantum Fund: while everyone else on Wall Street was losing their shirts, he was up over 30% for the year. If you're so good, why write a book? Fair question. I wrote this book because I'm a writer. That's what I love to do. The best way for me to learn something is to write about it. Writing this book was the end of a long quest for the keys to successful investing. In the process of identifying the 23 Winning Investment Habits I realized my problem wasn't a lack of knowledge; the problem was me. My own mental habits. I worked hard to change them. The result: the returns from my investments now pay the rent, send the kids to school, put food on the table, and so on. Every morning, I can choose to do with my day whatever I wish (including sleeping in). Mostly, I choose to write. Wouldn't you like have a life like that?If I can do it, so can you.

From the Back Cover
"Peter Lynch, who produced an annual return of 29 percent during the years he ran the Fidelity Magellan Fund; legendary investors such as Bernard Baruch, Sir John Templeton, and Philip Fisher; and every one of dozens of other highly successful investors (and commodity traders) I've studied and worked with, all practice exactly the same mental habits as Buffet, Icahn, and Soros, without exception."--excerpt from Becoming Rich

master investors help the neophyte, me
By Felipe Adan Lerma
i don't have a degree in business, i've only recently returned to looking at stocks since being mostly wiped out (what i had invested, which luckily wasn't too much), and like 5 yrs ago, i hear and read conflicting advice

an example is: "double down" and "don't double down"

this book by mark tier, is the first that lets me begin to see where these contradictory viewpoints are actually real-world money-making completely valid: for that particular master investor

and that's the key within the keys to success i think, listed in "becoming rich..."

personalizing the varied approaches you can recognize as compatible with you

then sticking to it (with review)

the side by side comparisons and real life financial examples between sometimes several investing modes in illuminating

applying the information is excruciating, but fun

i only wish there'd been more examples from graham's investing style; much like what is found on the author's website where he has a neat self test to see what percentages of which styles one seems to fit within (and what may also need work :-)

Becoming Rich: The Wealth-Building Secrets of The World's Master Investors Buffett, Icahn, Soros
By Daniel Ferris
I write financial newsletters for a living. I'm constantly being asked by my publisher's book subisidary to submit ideas for an investment title. I've bought every investment book with the name Buffett in the title. I've read most of them, although I've finished few of them. The best ones are The Warren Buffett Way, by Hagstrom, The Buffettology books, and Greenwald, et al's Value Investing: From Graham to Buffett and Beyond. Becoming Rich, is half a notch below these, but this is the book I wish I'd written, not any of those other three.

The best thing about Becoming Rich is that Tier, a veteran newsletter writer, always SHOWS you. He never merely tells you what his point is. This book has page after page of anecdotes and examples, including material I don't remember reading elsewhere about Buffett. For example, there's a great couple of paragraphs explaining what happened to Coke before Goizueta took over, and how Goizueta dug into the business, sold of all the garbage assets previous management had bought, and introduced Diet Coke, which became an instant smash hit.

Tier does a better job of summing up Soros's style than any of the Soros books. I can't get through Alchemy of Finance, but I really enjoyed reading about Soros in Becoming Rich. Icahn material is scarce, and Becoming Rich has material I haven't seen elsewhere, although Tier did tell me by e-mail that some of it came from the now out-of-print biography, King Icahn.

If you're an individual investor, you should read this book. If you're an educated financial professional, you've probably swallowed a fair amount of pure garbage as a part of your formal education. This book can help you discard it.

If you enjoy reading stories and anecdotes about business and great investors, you'll love this book. It doesn't hurt that, along the way, Tier calls out the principles that Buffett, Icahn and Soros used to get rich.

So...it's a useful book, a unique though simple approach to the topic, loaded with ultra-specific examples, delivered with a sense of urgency, fun and story-telling throughout.

Superior Wealth Creation Strategies
By Jusuf Hariman
Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn and George Soros all started with nothing, and yet made billion-dollar fortunes solely by investing. Their secrets turn out to be the same properity mental habits and strategies they all practise constantly and religiously. Commenting on these prosperity mental habits and strategies, Peter Lynch, who produced an annual return of 29% during the years he ran the Fidelity Magellan Fund once said, "I've studies and worked with Barnard Baruch, Sir John Templeton and Philip Fisher. All of them practice exactly the same mental habits as Buffett, Icahn and Soros. The late Harold Geneen, the legendary CEO who made ITT the largest conglomerate during his lifetime once said: "A three sentence course on business management: You read a book from the beginning to the end, and then you do everything you must to reach it" ("Managing", NY: Granada, 1984 p 26). I agree with Mr Geneen's advise wholeheartedly. In studying Mark Tier's book, it would create a more speedy osmosis if you start with Appendix 1: "The 23 Winning Investment Habits" and then go back to the beginning and read the book through. In fact, it is a testimony to his sagacity that Mr Mark Tier has seen fit to give us this valuable summary. Mark Tier walks his talk. He is an Australian writer and businessman who now lives and works in Hong Kong since 1977. 7 years ago he adopted the wealth-building habits in this book, sold his business interests, and now lives solely from the return on his investments. Like Warren Buffett, Mr Tier's job title is "capital allocator". The mental habits and strategies Mark Tier emphasize include: (i). Buffett, Icahn, and Soros do not diversify. When they buy, they buy as much as they can. Mark Tier put all his assets in one basket and watch the basket (For a further elucidation of this principle see M Gunther's "The Zurich Axioms". London: Souvenir Press, 1985);(ii).They're not focused on the profits they expect to make. Going in, they're not investing in the money at all. Prof Viktor Frankl, the founder of Logotherapy, har argued that true happiness comes at not being directly aimed at (See his "The Unheard Cry for Meaning". NY: Simon and Schuster, 1978); (iii). They don't believe that big profits have to involve big risks. In fact, they're far more focused on not losing money than making it. In short, either they concentrate on the world's finest companies or they look at companies with wide economic moat;(iv). Wall Street Research Reports? They never read them. They're not interested in what other people think. The only subscription Warren Buffett has is "Value Line". He reads voraciously 6-8 hours per day and form his own opinion on how things will evolve. In summary, this is definitely the best investment (how to make money?) book in the past 100 years. The book goes underneath the ups and downs of financial (accounting) numbers, and way beyond what Mr Market signifies. Mark Tier's view of the significance of financial statements reminds me of what my business law professor said in 1984, "A balance sheet is like a pretty girl in a bikini. What it reveals is interesting. What it conceals is vital". Mark Tier's book ushers in a new zeitgeist. It discloses what Thomas Kuhn in "The Structure of Scientific Revolution" calls "coupures epistemologigues" (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1970; see also M Charlesworth, "Science, Non-Science & Pseudo_Science" (Victoria: Deakin University Press, 1982 p 31). The reviewer, Dr Jusuf Hariman, BA, BEc, LLB, BA(Hons), MA, PHD, Hon Psy D, DCH,MIAAPs, FIAEP, FWAEH is a management consultant and the author of "Stay Calm and Reach the Top" (Hastings: The Worsley Press, 1993). He is also a psychotherapist, accountant and has legal qualifications from Macquarie University in Australia. He is listed in Who is Who in the World, Who is Who in Australia and in page 51 of Margariet Herd's "The Vision of Who's Who-Business & Life Quotations from Notable Australians" (Melbourne: Crown Content, Pty Ltd, 2005).

Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After, by Bella DePaulo

"Singled Out debunks myths and stereotypes about single people and lays the groundwork for social, political, and economic change."
-- Thomas F. Coleman, Executive Director, Unmarried America

Drawing from decades of scientific research and stacks of stories from the front lines of singlehood, Bella DePaulo debunks the myths of singledom---and shows that just about everything you've heard about the benefits of getting married and the perils of staying single are grossly exaggerated or just plain wrong. Although singles are singled out for unfair treatment by the workplace, the marketplace, and the federal tax structure, they are not simply victims of this singlism--single people really are living happily ever after.

Singled Out Debunks Ten Myths of Singlehood, Including:
-Myth--The Dark Aura of Singlehood: You are miserable and lonely and your life is tragic.
-Myth--Attention, Single Women: Your work won't love you back and your eggs will dry up. Also, you don't get any and you're promiscuous.
-Myth--Attention, Single Men: You are horny, slovenly, and irresponsible, and you are the scary criminals. Or you are sexy, fastidious, frivolous, and gay.

"Elegant analysis, wonderfully detailed examples, and clear and witty prose…A must-read for all single adults, their friends and families, as well as social scientists and policy advocates."
--E. Kay Trimberger, author of The New Single Woman

"The singles movement is coming to a bookstore near you."
--Associated Press

"Fascinating . .this book could hardly have come at a better time. As much as societal adulation of the couple discriminates against single people, Singled Out suggests that it can also undermine marriage."
--The Christian Science Monitor

From Publishers Weekly
DePaulo fastidiously defines the various categories of singlehood-divorced, widowed or just plain never been married-and gives their struggle a voice in this intriguing cultural study. According to DePaulo, "singlism" is the pervasive discrimination single people face in politics and everyday life, though DePaulo makes it clear he isn't equating it with racism or sexism. Rather, DePaulo uncovers society's immediate associations-conscious and otherwise-with the word "single," including the implication of loneliness, homosexuality and/or a personal defect that prevents a single person from achieving the dubiously enshrined goal of marriage. In addition, this exhaustive study reveals how marriage has come to represent the foundation of both American society and politics, and how the resulting system of discrimination pervades even in this modern age of financial freedom-including increased tax burdens, decreased social security benefits, and real-world wage disparity. In identifying the stigmas of being single and debunking myths like "marrieds know best," DePaulo has given this complicated subject the attention and respect it deserves, opening a dialogue without offering any pat solutions.

Outstanding
By Leigh Matsen
Excellent book, and very helpful to me. I really appreciate Bella 's accuracy. She did a lot of real research to get to the truth in this book. I laughed a great deal at the unbelievable ignorance with most of society. Well, I can't thank you enough for writing this. This book was healing as well as inspiring. Respectfully :)

Single this book Out for Superb Reading
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
Almost any single person has been affected by myth and stigma. Supposedly we're misfits with empty lives, doomed to die alone, frustrated at never achieving the perfection of coupledom. Finally, someone lets the cat out of the bag. We're normal and happy.

I had heard of the author when I was an academic and even cited some of her articles in my own research. Then out of the blue, she asked permission to use a quote from me in this book. I was delighted with the request and the topic.

Having read DePaulo's academic articles, I anticipated a superb book and I was not disappointed. In fact, Singled Out vastly exceeded my expectations. I've given away 2 copies. One recipient said she bought 4 more to give away. And we don't usually buy books, let alone give them as gifts.

Unlike many popular psychology authors, DePaulo uses her research training to make significant points. The book is worth reading just to go through Chapter 2, an eye-opening look at the way research results can be distorted to meet an agenda. And any single person will laugh out loud at DePaulo's opening satire: What if we subjected married people to the indignities, frustrations and hassles that single people take for granted.

DePaulo asks, "What does research tell us about the specific benefits of paired relationships?" In fact, it's only in the last hundred years or so that the "pack of two" became privileged in our culture.

After reading Singled Out, I found myself seeing the world differently. I keep picking up hidden messages everywhere, especially movies and television. A singles column in my local paper really should be called relationship seeking. Singles groups? More of the same.

However, I do see signs of hope. For example, the Doonesbury comic strip featured a celebration of singleness. A columnist in the Chronicle of Higher Education advised a questioner to prioritize her career over her relationship: good jobs, said the columnist, can be scarcer than good mates.

And although Sex and the City did get everyone coupled up at the end, as DePaulo points out, we did get glimpses of smart, attractive women who went to movies alone. What single person can forget the scene where Miranda's law firm colleagues assume "single" is code for "lesbian?"

But we've got a long, long way to go. As DePaulo points out, everything from tax codes to medical services to vacation packages favors couples. Doctors frequently assume our symptoms have neurotic origins; "just get married and your symptoms will go away" or, "You're alone so you have time to make up symptoms." Famous singles get asked about their dating life (do we really care if Condoleeza Rice has a boyfriend?) and single politicians lack credibility. The consequences for singles and for society are huge.

On a lighter note, this book solves the problem of what married couples can give their single friends. Give them this book and buy an extra copy for yourself. You'll all change for the better.

A great consciousness-raiser
By Editing_Gal
I just finished this book (which I had checked out from the library) and plan to purchase a copy for re-reading. Recently and very unexpectedly divorced after nearly 30 years of marriage, this book came into my life at the perfect time. I (embarrassingly) recognized myself within the pages as one of those who had unknowingly had the cultural advantages and self-satisfied attitudes of couplehood/marriage.

This book has taken me to a new level of awareness and understanding of society's subtle (and not so subtle) messages about people who are single by choice or by circumstance. Ms. DePaulo's writing is clear, insightful, and humorous. (I found her humor in turns wry, sly, and playful, not at all sarcastic or bitter.) She is right-on in her analysis of cultural views of both singlehood and coupledom.

Aided by the perspective of this book, I am no longer simply accepting life as a single, but looking forward to creating a future as rich, fulfilling, and compassionate as possible. I now view my unexpected singlehood as a blessing that allows me to direct my love and energies into new avenues, including deepening my friendships and providing community service. This book has dramatically redirected my outlook.

From the wickedly hilarious pen of Southern humorist Celia Rivenbark comes a collection of essays that brings to mind Dave Barry (in high heels) or Jeff Foxworthy (in a prom dress).

Step into the wacky world of "womanless wedding" fund-raisers, in which Bubbas wear boas. Meet two sisters who fight rural boredom by washing Budweiser cans and cutting them into pieces to make clothing. Learn why the word snow sends any right-thinking Southerner careening to the Food Lion for extra loaves of bread and little else.

Humor columnist and slightly crazed belle-by-birth Celia Rivenbark tackles these and other lard-laden subjects in Bless Your Heart, Tramp, a hilarious look at Southern---and just plain human---foibles, up-close and personal.

A Must-Read For The Southern Transplant
By DennisGirl
In this book, Ms. Rivenbark dissects the social banter and behavior of the average southern population. It seems that Southerners are the ultimate put-down artists. A remark that seems complimentary and pleasant to the unitiated may well be considered an insult by the local folks. I can see that this would be a plus when confronted with the multitude of transplants that have moved south. This book is TOO funny, as well as informative.

Relaxing read
By RayShack757
Nice, humerous, relaxing read when your brain needs a break. One of those good clean laugh types of books. I did enjoy this book a lot, though Celia is very Southern. I find myself reading with a southern accent when I read her works. Not that I have anything against it. Good author, cute stories, recomended for a calm day at the beach or relaxing somewhere.

A feel-good classic!
By Dave Schwinghammer
This is the fourth in a series written by a Scottish veterinarian who takes a job in Yorkshire, England, working under Siegfried Farnon. James Herriot, Farnon and his brother Tristan work on all sorts of animals from parakeets to draft horses.

James Herriot has a wonderful ability to poke fun at himself, as is illustrated in one of his earliest essays from the first work, All Things Bright and Beautiful, where he clips the beak of a budgie, inadvertently suffocating the poor creature. We then see him struggle to find a replacement for the little bird, its owner's best friend. Later, we watch Herriot's bumbling attempt to court his future wife Helen.

In The Lord God Made Them All, Herriot is returning from World War II where he served as an RAF officer; he's married with two children but he still works for Siegfried Farnon. Siegfried will remind you of a character from Dickens. He's an excellent veterinary but his many quirks and foibles make him a trying boss at times. Then there's his ne'er-do-well brother, Tristan. They're constantly fighting and Herriot usually winds up in the middle. The Yorkshire farmers are also fascinating. Herriot has a wonderful facility with dialect and some of the dialogue is hilarious.

In the first story Herriot sets out to "nip" (castrate) a calf. "There's nobbut one, Mr. Herriot," the farmer says. "An enormous black animal galloped out . . . I stared at the spreading horns, the great hump of muscle on the shoulder and the coldly glittering eyes. It only needed a blast on a trumpet and sand instead of cobbles and I was in the Plaza de Toros in Madrid."

Quite often Herriot serves as a psychologist, to his human clients. In one story, Herriot is awakened at one in the morning to treat Myrtle the beagle, whose drunken owner has a guilt complex about leaving his dog alone to attend the races. There's nothing wrong with the dog, but to assuage the owner's fears, Herriot gives Myrtle a vitamin tablet. This happens again and again, and when Herriot finally confronts the owner about the imaginary illnesses, the dog is really sick.

Yes, the joke is usually on Herriot, but if your animal is sick, you call James Herriot and sometimes you call him just to talk.

These are wonderful, nostalgic stories that take the reader back to a simpler time. It's so good you'll find yourself reading it as a pick-me-up when you feel blue.

A Fitting Conclusion
By David C. Hoffner
My wife and I just finished reading the whole series of four Herriot books. I think that the first one (_All Creatures Great and Small_) is probably the best one overall. The author probably put the best stories he knew into his first book. But there are several delightful stories spread through the later books, and all four make for enjoyable reading.
This book has a couple unique features. One is that the author goes on a couple international adventures traveling as caretaker of some overseas animal shipments. These are interesting travel stories on their own. Also in this book we meet James' children and see them grow up to some degree.
_The Lord God Made Them All_ is a fittingly warm and pleasant conclusion to a really enjoyable series of books.

I adored these charming stories...
By Just another Stephanie
LOVED it. I've seen his books all over- bookstores, libraries, friends' houses, and yet I always resisted reading him. Why? I'm not sure. I didn't care for the cover (), and I usually REALLY hate stories about animals. A few years back, I read of a homeschooling family reading his work out loud, and when I came upon this book at a yard sale, I stuffed it in my sack to buy- I had an idea of my son and me reading it outloud in the distant future. I picked it up the other night because I was bored, needed something to read, and felt that I 'should' read this. After about two or three chapters, I was hooked. His stories are simple but charming, detailing the daily life of a country veterinarian. He was able to make me visualize riding along as his passenger as he drove from farm to farm, treating cows, pigs, sheep and domesticated pets. So many of his stories have funny endings. I really truly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the first one, "All Things Bright And Beautiful."

(3.5 Stars) To Begin Anew...
By Urban Reviews
Now a college grad with a promising career, a closer relationship with the two strong forces in her life, Celeste Styles is finally comfortable in her own skin. The fit is near perfect despite the ache she still harbors for her forbidden love, Rah-lo. Celeste made a true gangsta move and ran from the lifestyle of being Rah-lo's mistress and the drama it entailed with his ghetto-fabulous wife, Asia.

Although disheartened with Celeste's disappearing act, Raheem Rah-lo Henderson charged it to the game and kept it moving. He is still miserably married to Asia and is attempting to salvage this farce of a union for his girls' sake. He and lifelong friend Ishmael Wright continue their get money hustle although a sense of distrust has caused an invisible breach in their relationship. Ishmael is reluctantly cohabitating with Nina, but still has jump-offs because of his hesitancy to commit. Rah-lo and Ishmael are both living challenging lives with their jealous and devious ladies and both are still secretly fantasizing about Celeste being their soul mate.

Twisted brings us up to speed on the drama surrounding Rah-lo, Celeste, and Ishmael, after the burning of Celeste's Dime Piece salon. Distance does seem to make the heart grow fonder, but jealousy, lies, deceit, lust, backbiting, obsessing, and a touch of insanity are just a few of the emotions running rampant in this joint! Ms. Brown did bring closure to this tale of forbidden lovers. Good job Ms. Brown!

Back in NY Rah-lo and his main man Ishmael are still feeling Celeste miles away. Rah-lo is fed up with his trifling wife Asia. Ishamael also has his hands full with all the ladies he deals with. Meanwhile in the ATL Celeste has landed her a good man, successful and not a thug. A strange turn of events will bring all these chracters back together for one DRAMA filled explosive ending!!! Does Celeste want Rahlo back? Will Ishamael end up with Celeste? Will Asia let her husband leave her? Will Celeste's past come back to haunt her?

Got me Twisted over you!!
By Akima Rolle
This story takes off where Dime Piece ended. All the major players are back in this book Ismael, Raheem aka Rah-Lo,Celeste,Asia, and a few old friends from Dime Piece. We catch up with Celeste as she tries to start over her life in The ATL. Rah-Lo and Asia's marriage is so on the rocks in this book that it's soon to tip over. Ish is a something else in this book he's sleeping with friends and trying to move out of Rah-Lo's shadow and take the spot light himself this time. This book was great from the beginning to the end. The last few chapters put you on a fast paced ride that you don't want to end. This book is classic Tracy Brown and I loved the way it ended. Ms. Brown is truly a gifted author and I can't wait for her next book.

Bestseller Clark (Dancing in the Dark) delivers another well-crafted thriller. When Caroline Enright, a 34-year-old film and drama critic for TV's KEY to America morning show, lands an assignment to cover the Warrenstown, Mass., theater festival, she anticipates combining it with a getaway with her new husband, Nick, and a chance to bond with her aloof 20-year-old stepdaughter, Meg, who's an apprentice at the festival. The last thing Caroline expects as she leaves New York City for the scenic Berkshires is that she'll have to draw on her journalistic skills to unveil a ruthless murderer. With only six months of broadcast experience under her belt, Caroline has a lot to prove with the piece she has planned about Oscar-winning actress Belinda Winthrop, who's starring in a production of a new play rumored to be a contender for a Pulitzer Prize. But when Belinda mysteriously disappears, Caroline launches herself into an investigation—and finds Meg's life and her own in danger. With fresh characters, an idyllic setting and plot twists that will grip readers until the suspenseful resolution, Clark's latest is sure to be a summer hit. Author tour. (July)

Taking center stage in the latest Clark novel set in the fictional KEY News broadcast studio is film and theater critic Caroline Enright, whose love of the Academy Award-winning actress Belinda Winthrop provides her with the right background to review a new play in which Winthrop is starring at a festival in the Berkshires. It's a perfect opportunity to get away with her new husband, Nick, too, even if it means his less-than-accepting college-age daughter will be in tow. What should be a weekend of great theater and quaint surroundings turns violent as dead bodies begin to pile up. Quick and light; perfect summer reading. Mary Frances Wilkens

A FAST READING FUN BOOK.
By D. Blankenship
I am certainly not going to go into plots or story lines here, as that has been done by others, so don't worry about spoilers. This is a fast reading thriller just stuffed with little intrigues and sub stories. It holds you attention from cover to cover quite well, and is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The writing is clear, with clever syntax and the story line is quite easy to follow and without a myriad of characters to sort out and wade through. This is just the type of novel that is just simply fun to relax with and to enjoy. Job well done Ms. Clark! Recommend this one highly.

"Sociopaths can be seductive."
By E. Bukowsky
Mary Jane Clark's "Lights Out Tonight" features thirty-four year old Caroline Enright, film and theater critic for the morning news broadcast "KEY to America." Caroline has a great deal on her mind. Linus Nazareth, her executive producer, is condescending, sarcastic, and demanding, and her brand new stepdaughter, twenty-year-old Meg, despises her. However, Caroline adores her new husband, screenwriter Nick McGregor, and she hopes that Meg will soon warm up to her.

Caroline and Nick will soon be traveling to Massachusetts to see Meg, who is an apprentice in the Warrenstown theater program. In addition, Caroline has been assigned to interview one of her favorite actresses, Belinda Winthrop, a veteran of thirty-two films who is about to star in a new play at the Warrenstown Summer Playhouse.

When Caroline sees Meg, she finds her stepdaughter as hostile as ever. However, Caroline distracts herself with work, interviewing not only Belinda Winthrop, but also playwright Victoria Sterling and director Keith Fallows. Living on Belinda's estate are a menacing caretaker and ex-con named Gus Oberon, and Remington Peters, a talented but tormented artist whose unrequited love for Belinda has haunted him for years.

The inhabitants of Warrenstown are stunned when two college students, one of whom was a close friend of Meg, are killed in a car accident. Shortly thereafter, the town librarian is murdered, and following Belinda Winthrop's triumphant debut, she suddenly vanishes. Caroline branches out of her area of expertise to cover these breaking stories, and she quickly realizes that a clever and malicious killer is on the loose. Before the assailant is unmasked, Caroline and her daughter will also be targeted for death.

Mary Jane Clark has written a tidy thriller with a lively cast, fast-paced dialogue and action, and enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing. The details about life on the stage are immensely entertaining, with behind the scenes details on makeup, costumes, and directing. Clark also provides an engrossing look at the ego, ambition, and jealousy that afflict so many people in show business. The author, who writes and produces for CBS News, skillfully shows Caroline experiencing her baptism by fire as a reporter in Warrenstown. "Lights Out Tonight" has short and crisp chapters, clear and precise prose, an engrossing plot, and lively characters, making it an ideal summer read.

"My name is Lisa di Antonio Gherardini Giocondo, though to acquaintances, I am known simply as Madonna Lisa. My story begins not with my birth but a murder, committed the year before I was born…"

Florence, April 1478: The handsome Giuliano de' Medici is brutally assassinated in Florence's magnificent Duomo. The shock of the murder ripples throughout the great city, from the most renowned artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, to a wealthy wool merchant and his extraordinarily beautiful daughter, Madonna Lisa.

More than a decade later, Florence falls under the dark spell of the preacher Savonarola, a fanatic who burns paintings and books as easily as he sends men to their deaths. Lisa, now grown into an alluring woman, captures the heart of Giuliano's nephew and namesake. But when Guiliano, her love, meets a tragic end, Lisa must gather all her courage and cunning to untangle a sinister web of illicit love, treachery, and dangerous secrets that threatens her life.

Set against the drama of 15th Century Florence, I, Mona Lisa is painted in many layers of fact and fiction, with each intricately drawn twist told through the captivating voice of Mona Lisa herself.

From Publishers Weekly
Set against a backdrop of political and religious conflicts in 15th-century Medici-ruled Florence, Kalogridis's bloody historical (after The Borgia Bride) identifies the subject of Leonardo da Vinci's painting as Lisa di Antonio Gherardini. Lisa was the daughter of Madonna Lucrezia, wife of a wealthy wool merchant who also enchanted both da Vinci and Lorenzo de' Medici's brother Giuliano, murdered by conspirators in 1478. Giuliano's assassination—and the later murder of Lucrezia—presage a reign of religious terror led by a monk known as Savonarola and the retreat of the Medicis in the face of invasion from France's King Charles. An adult Lisa attracts the romantic attentions of a young Medici scion, whom she marries for love. (His father, Lorenzo, commissions her portrait from da Vinci.) But violent events soon separate the couple and a brutal Savonarola follower tells Lisa that her husband is dead—and her father's life in danger—unless she marries him instead. Lisa survives, an avenging angel, proving herself worthy of da Vinci's immortal artistry. Kalogridis's fevered bodice ripper invents a passionate woman behind La Gioconda's enigmatic smile. (Nov.)

A perfect example of Historical Fiction at its finest!
By MLRapp
After having loved "The Borgia Bride" by Jeanne Kalogridis, I was looking forward to "I, Mona Lisa" with high expectations and was delighted to pour through this wonderful novel filled with historical fact blended with innovative fiction, and twists and turns galore. Set in Florence in the 1490s, the novel tells the story of Madonna Lisa, the woman behind Leondardo DiVinci's masterpiece. The story is a clever and romantic possibility of the reason behind that famous smile (or lack thereof?).

If you enjoy historical fiction, "I, Mona Lisa" and "The Borgia Bride" are two examples of the genre at its finest: wonderful character development, rich plots, a studied knowledge of the place, times and characters (you will recognise famous historical figures throughout both novels), a careful weaving of fact and fiction, and just enough twists and turns to keep the modern reader both interested and engaged. I highly recommend both novels!

P.S. DO NOT READ THE BACK OF THE BOOK PRIOR TO READING IT!!!! Whomever wrote the blurb on the back of this novel certainly didn't want the readers to be shocked about one of the interesting plot-twists more than halfway through the novel. If you want to be surprised and enjoy this book to its fullest, I highly recommend NOT reading the back of the book!

Kalogridis' best!
By ellen
Ms. Kalogridis has hit her stride - she makes historical characters come to life - while her The Borgia Bride showed the Borgias in Rome, Mona Lisa shows a different prospective around the same time in Florence. A time of the Medicis, Savonarola, Leonardo. I, Mona Lisa introduces us to the real Mona Lisa, who is the daughter of a wool merchant. When she marries a Medici, becomes embroiled in the turmoil of the time - The main influence of the time was Savanarola - talk about your mad monk - his words crumble Florence - This book makes history come to life. Kalogridis is an amazing writer. She doesn't crank books out every six months, she creates a full picture of whatever era she is writing about, and it's worth the wait. I have been a fan of Kalogridis since the old vampire days (her family Dracul is a must read for fans of Dracula). She is a gracious lady who deserves every accolade she gets. Keep 'em coming Jeanne!

Your smile will be no secret while reading this tale of Renaissance intrigue and love
By Amazon Customer
The real history of the Italian Renaissance needs little doctoring to make it an engrossing topic - it's full of intrigue, warring families, corrupt Papal power mongers, astonishing wealth and poverty, poisonings, artistic and scientific creativity and amazing beauty. Kalogridis has a wonderful knack for selecting delectible real stories, conducting meticulous research, and then using her pen to write in the missing (possible) personal pieces with results that are a gift to read.

The story she created for "I, Mona Lisa" fills in the blanks behind the secretive smile that has captured the imaginations of millions. The outrageous real events of the time (the Pazzi conspiracy & murders; Savonarola and his priest posse; the corrupt Borgia papacy, etc) are a no-fail back drop for this enthralling story of a love-struck wool merchant's daughter who becomes a political pawn caught up in the espianoge swirling around the Medici, Pazzi and the Church.

The story of Lisa di Antonio Gherardini, the name of the woman believed to be the sitter for Leonardo da Vinci's most famous portrait, follows a familiar formula. We meet her as a young teen and with her witness several traumatic events which fuel her adolescent angst and rebellion against her father. This merchant's daughter manages to capture the eye and then the heart of a Medici prince, and her wiley slave helps her plot to follow her heart. Suddenly bad things happen, danger lurks, and the plot becomes sinister and suspenseful... Lisa takes foolish risks, and then more bad things happen... you just keep turning pages and losing sleep! I won't ruin the ending... but follow the formula. In this light, Kalogridis has not accomplished anything new, but she has certainly excelled at bringing this formula to life!

The joy of this book is Kalogridis' ability to paint such an alive picture of the fear, suspense & political intrigue of Florence during the end of Lorenzo the Magnificent's reign and the subsequent oppressive rule of Savonarola (read "April Blood" by Lauro Martines or watch the "The Medici: God Fathers of the Renaissance" DVD set to compare her story with historical fact). Those who have visited Florence will appreciate the detail with which she describes the buildings and layout of the city - you will re-visit as you read.

Some reviewers have categorized "I, Mona Lisa" as a historical romance. I respectfully disagree - the romantic interest of Lisa may be the force which drives her survival under the circumstances of the story, but the political intrigue of the time is the theme which dominates. Regardless, both history buffs & romantics will be satisfied by the plentiful supply of accurate facts AND unrequitted love that remains alive in the most hopeless of circumstances.

Keep writing, Ms. Kalogridis - I will keep reading!

(I highly recommend "The Borgia Bride" by Jeanne Kalogridis as well - I believe I enjoyed that even more than this one!)
