ONE IS his beloved.
Leaving L.A.'s Parker Center, Shane Scully and his wife, Alexa, agree to meet at home…but Alexa never arrives. Then Shane's called to a crime scene on Mulholland Drive, where the victim, an apparent gang member, has been executed--and left in Alexa's car. Her gun is the likely murder weapon.

THE OTHER Is his Nemesis.
As Shane desperately tries to find Alexa, his leads point to a feud between two gangsta-rap record companies, both heavily manned by Crips and Bloods. At the center of this war is a ruthless, beautiful Lady Macbeth-like white woman raised in Compton. Married to a multi-millionaire rap mogul, she is known as the White Sister.

It's his worst nightmare come true…
Shane is no stranger to big trouble, but he's never before been smeared as a "racist cop" or thrown in jail while there's a hit out on him. Much worse is the unknown fate of Alexa, and the fact that in the mysterious White Sister--who holds the clue to a sinister conspiracy--he may have met his match.

From Publishers Weekly
With his frenetic fifth Shane Scully novel, bestseller Cannell (Cold Hit) dishes out the action in forklift-sized servings. Casting aside the rules like never before, LAPD detective Scully conducts his own seek-and-destroy mission after his wife, fellow cop Alexa, is found shot in the head. As Alexa clings to life, Scully's efforts to track down her attacker lead him into the violent, vengeful world of rap music, lorded over by two of its most feared executives, Lou Maluga and his wife, Stacy, known in the trade as "the white sister." Without pause to sleep or eat, Scully fights and claws his way along, burning friends, violating laws, using his charm as well as his fists before coming face to face with his enemy in Las Vegas. Cannell's hard-boiled, if at times over-rehearsed prose is well suited to his subject matter, though some readers may have trouble with his hero's tendency to suddenly shift character from tough guy to touchy-feely 21st-century man. Scully dives into the rap star roots of gang violence
By Schtinky
Shane and Alexa are heading home from a mandatory class on incarceration and transfer tactics. On his way home, Shane is sidetracked by hitting a homeless man named John Bodine and having to take him to the hospital with a broken wrist. In the meantime, as he tries to reach Alexa, he can't. Later, two detective friends call him out to a crime scene where the found a dead gang-banger handcuffed to the wheel of Alexa's car. Alexa is missing.

Shane is home when Alexa calls in her suicide note on the answering machine, and even as he hears the bullet fire he is out the door, screaming for help in tracing the call. He finds Alexa barely alive in the house of the banger she capped in her car. Rushed to the hospital with a severe head injury, Alexa is not expected to survive.

The banger in her car turns out to be an undercover cop named David Slade, working with record mogul Lou Maluga, recently estranged from his "white sister" wife Stacy Maluga. Things have never been tougher for Shane. Deeper into a pit of vipers, he must explore the underground gang ties to popular rap music, all while trying to make sure his wife gets the best brain surgeon possible, and keep his own hinder out of jail as a suspect.

While still face paced and well written as all his books are, I was disappointed in this Cannell book.

To be perfectly open and honest, I don't care for graphic suicide scenes even though I normally read horror, especially unrealistic ones where the victim lives and turns out to be A-OK. This is a one-in-a-billion shot. If anyone suffers trauma from the loss of a loved one due to suicide and found this book stirred up bad feelings, please contact Survivors Of Loved Ones Suicide, or SOLOS on the web, they are there to help. There are other local suicide groups you can contact also, just ask your local Crisis Care line and they will hook you up with a group or individual that will listen to you.

The other part is simply less personal. I don't care for rap and find rap-speak, gang-speak, and the whole culture that goes along with it pretty boring. So the combination put together by Cannell for this book simply didn't push my "go" button the way his other books have. I also expected more from the sexy front cover. I guess I envisioned a kind of beauty stand off with Alexa and White Sister but it simply didn't turn out that way.

Don't forget to pick up the rest of the Shane Scully series by this author, though. One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch, and I for one will still be eagerly awaiting the next installment. Enjoy (if you can).

Shane Scully is a great character and I love these Cannell's amazing plots. This one takes Shane as far off the "straight and narrow" as he's ever been.

The Angel with One Hundred Wings: A Tale from the Arabian Nights, by Daniel Horch

The story opens in the City of Peace, as Baghdad was once called. It is a fabulously wealthy city, receiving tribute from an empire that stretches from modern day Afghanistan to Spain. Abulhassan Ibn Thaher is an old pharmacist and alchemist who is an intimate friend of the Sultan. When the young prince of Persia falls in love with Schemselnihar, the Sultan's beloved mistress, they beg Abulhassan to help them elope. Even though it could mean death for all of them, Abulhassan relents and agrees to help. As rumor and gossip spread, different factions at court try to use the impending scandal for their own ends, and the story climaxes with the lovers' flight into the desert. With engaging characters and rich imagery drawn from alchemy, the Koran, and the early Islamic mystics, The Angel with A Hundred Wings is a literary masterpiece that captures all the magic and romance of the Middle East once upon a time.

From Publishers Weekly
First-time novelist Horch offers a lively rendition of this tale from the Arabian Nights, set in 9th-century Baghdad, then called the City of Peace. Abulhassan Ibn Thaher, an elderly pharmacist and alchemist, is a confidant and chess partner of the sultan Harun al-Rashid. He finds himself in an impossible position when the prince of Persia falls madly in love with the sultan's favorite mistress, Shemselnehar, and asks the old man to help them run away. All three face certain death if the plot is discovered, and this is quite likely in a city and royal court full of spies, where everyone knows everyone else's business. Much like a chess match, the plot is driven by advances and retreats, surprising strategies and much suspense. The writing is evocative and the story fast-paced; memorable and truly likable characters enrich Horch's gripping adventure story. As the novel progresses, Abulhassan realizes that he has not lived his life as wisely as he could have; he has not treated his wife and children with the love and respect they deserve. Struck by remorse, he redoubles his efforts and risks everything to aid the young lovers. Woven throughout the book are fascinating asides about alchemy and Islamic mystics. An imaginative and vivid retelling, this novel should interest both Arabian Nights fans and newcomers looking for a diverting historical suspense tale.

From Library Journal
Drawing inspiration from The Arabian Nights, Horch has penned a luminous first novel. Set in Baghdad during the Caliphate of Harun al-Rashid, this is a tale of the forbidden love between Abulhassan, prince of Persia, and the Caliph's favorite concubine, Schemselnihar. The narrator, a pharmacist, alchemist, and friend of the Caliph, agrees to abet their elopement and fears for his execution. While the story is replete with adventure, betrayal, miraculous escapes, and all the other attributes of a hair-raising thriller, Horch truly excels at portraying ninth-century Baghdad. With exquisite detail and vibrant color, he brings to life the wealth and beauty of the city, the greatest metropolis of its age. The author also infuses the wisdom of the Qur'an, the texts of Islamic mystics, and the alchemical treatises of the day into the narrative. At a time when an understanding of the historical context of Islam is so important, Horch has crafted an exciting tale in a beautiful package, one that informs as it engages. Highly recommended for fiction collections.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Once upon a time, back when Baghdad was known as the City of Peace, there lived an alchemist named Abulhassan. Betraying his oldest and truest friend (who also happens to be the sultan of Baghdad), Abulhassan neglects his family and risks beheading to help a passionate young prince elope with the beautiful Schemselnihar, the sultan's favorite--unhappy--concubine. Getting the couple safely and secretly out of Arabia proves difficult, thanks to meddling courtiers, harem guards, and desert bandits. Rumors fly, spies spy, the sultan grows suspicious, and Abulhassan contemplates the failed alchemy of his own marriage while preparing to sacrifice his life for the young lovers' freedom. Equal parts adventure, romance, and philosophical meditation, Horch's debut is full of action and lush imagery and would probably stand on its own as a captivating Arabian Nights fairy tale even without musing about death, honor, love, mercy, and forgiveness. Infused with Koranic references and a sophisticated understanding of early Islamic mysticism, however, the story becomes a lavish Persian rug that will delight readers who like intellectually stimulating fairy tales. A Captivating & Wonderful Book
By Matthew I Wein
The story was captivating and the characters were so well developed that you could sympathize with all of them. It is written with such beautiful prose that any chapter, page or paragraph can be taken out of context and enjoyed on its own. I am recommending this book to all of my friends and I eagerly await Horch's next work.

A great tale
By A Customer
In the ninth century in the City of Peace (Baghdad for ye unfaithful) elderly alchemist Abulhassan is confronted with a dilemma. A confidant of his chess partner and best friend the Sultan, Abulhassan has been asked by the Prince of Persia, who he mentored like a son, to aid young love. The Prince and the sultan's favorite mistress, the independent Shemselnehar, have fallen in love. They know that if they are to share happiness they must flee to the Western Kingdoms of the vast empire. Only the alchemist has a chance to get them out of town, but he would have to risk his life and betray his friend.
Abulhassan believes they ask too much of him as he knows that the chances of success are nil with so many informers lining the city. Still he reflects on his own life and knows he has not treated his own family with the love and nurturing people deserve. Because of his guilt at his own failures, Abulhassan decides to assist the young lovers in their attempt to find happiness together.
This is a great tale filled with a very exciting but rocky path towards freedom as the plan does not implement smoothly. The prime trio is unique individuals each facing remorse yet embracing love. Insight into early Islam and Dark Ages alchemy adds a deep historical base to the tale to include how much light existed in the so called Dark Ages in the Persian Empire. Readers will appreciate this strong historical tale of star-crossed lovers risking all for love.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-This book has just one thing going for it. It's the first biography for youngsters about the popular author. The only other sources of information are articles in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet. Unfortunately, the text reads like a rough draft of a junior-high research paper. Incomplete and fragmented sentences abound as Shapiro rambles on in a confusing manner. Quotations are loosely traced to articles and interviews in their sentences, but are not properly documented ("'It was a little like having the Beatles here,' said an excited, out-of-breath bookstore representative to Entertainment Weekly after the event"). The author writes in absolutes without noting sources, e.g., "Her eyes were always wide in amazement at the world around her-." Events appear out of nowhere as if they'd been previously mentioned. It's a shame that the book is too inaccurate, unsubstantiated, and poorly written to be suitable for research purposes. Do your kids a favor and direct them to Scholastic's Web site (scholastic.com) for information on Rowling.

Gr. 5-8. This is a cut-and-paste job with a couple of glaring errors. But at the moment, there are only one or two books available on Rowling, and older kids won't be ashamed to carry around this book (actually published by an adult imprint) because of its paperback format. The fact of the matter is that Rowling's life was not all that interesting until she started writing about Harry: normal upbringing, a graduate of Exeter University, a year in Paris, a string of undistinguished jobs, and a brief marriage, which left her with a daughter. The book must have been in production before the name of the most recent Harry Potter was changed from the Doomspell Tour nament to Goblet of Fire , but the mistake will jump out at readers. There also seem to be missteps in the chronology. Keep this for report writers and Harry lovers until something better comes along, which should be soon. Ilene Cooper

"New and Improved" 2004 Edition Leaves Room for Improvement
By Dwight Blubaugh
I found lots of annoying aspects to this 2004 Third Edition of Shapiro's J. K. Rowling biography.

What had to be the most annoying was that Shapiro apparently just slapped extra material at the end of the book each time he came out with a new edition. At the end of what must have been the original 2001 edition, Shapiro talks about 2001 events in the present tense, and about looking forward to what will come in 2002. This appears to be the case again where the 2002 edition must have originally ended. Apparently there was no major revision of the material in the earlier editions for this new 2004 edition - it was simply added to for each new edition.

Among other weaknesses, the book is very repetitive and choppy, with the chronology often disorganized. Also, the author's personal comments did not seem very insightful. He mentions several times what a good husband and father Rowling's second husband is and how happy the marriage is, not as a quote from anyone, but just as stated "fact."

The book contained plenty of good and interesting information, and I believe that the inaccuracies that other reviewers mentioned from earlier editions have been mostly corrected (as it matched most information I've read from other sources, which Shapiro is often good about citing). However, some major editing needs to be done on the book.

The Captain's Vengeance (Alan Lewrie Naval Adventures), by Dewey Lambdin

Sailing in the Caribbean, Captain Alan Lewrie, RN, is once again pursuing a chimera.
A rich French prize ship he'd left at anchor at Dominica has gone missing, along with six of his sailors. What starts as a straightforward search for it, and them, from Hispaniola to Barbados, far down the Antilles, leads Lewrie to a gruesome discovery on the Dry Tortugas and to a vile cabal of the most pitiless and depraved pirates ever to sail under the "Jolly Roger" . . . and the suspicion that one of his trusted hands just may be the worst of them all!
Against his will--again--the usually irrepressible Lewrie is made his superiors' "cat's-paw" once more, and his covert mission this time is to go up the Mississippi in enemy-held Spanish Louisiana to the romantic but sordid port of New Orleans in search of pirates and prize, where one false step could betray Lewrie and his small party as spies. Beguilements, betrayal, and death lurk 'round every corner of the Vieux Carré, and it's up to Lewrie's quick but cynical to win the day wits for their survival and wreak a very personal vengeance on his foes!

From Publishers Weekly
This 12th installment of the Alan Lewrie naval adventure series sends the British captain to 1799 New Orleans in pursuit of pirates. Unlike the manly, ship-shape society aboard his frigate, New Orleans seems dominated by seductive women, especially the coquettish pirate ringleader Charité, who is plotting an insurrection against Louisiana's slothful Spanish rulers that will reunite it with Republican France and forestall a takeover by the uncouth but energetic Americans. Crying "laisser les bons temps rouler," Charité fights for her right " 'to be French... to take joy in being sans moralité' "; for her, the French Revolution—the great problem of the naval adventure genre—is not a sociopolitical rupture but a new, unconventional defense of traditional Gallic decadence and frivolity against the encroachment of Yankee industriousness. Out of his depth, Lewrie confronts her unruly French femininity the only way he can on dry land—through noisy, seven-condom sex marathons ("her pleasure made her squawl out loud... grunting and lowing like a heifer being taken by a rutting bull") undertaken while his associates unravel the various intrigues. Throughout, Lambdin layers on period minutiae of clothing, weapons, customs and patois (" 'You cheese-paring bougre!' ") along with accounts of Mississippi valley trade and settlement patterns. A wealth of historical detail and lively, if stereotyped, supporting characters partly make up for the novel's slack plot and overdone sex.

About the Author
Dewey Lambdin is the author of eleven previous Alan Lewrie novels and an omnibus volume, For King and Country. A member of the U.S. Naval Institute and a Friend of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, he spends his free time working and sailing on a rather tatty old sloop, Wind Dancer. He makes his home in Nashville, Tennessee, but would much prefer Margaritaville or Murrell's Inlet.

Such a waste, he's a naval officer for gods sake and ...
By Ray Habeger
Alan Lewrie lives in one of the most tulmultuous, violent and world changing eras, but for some reason the author has decided to stick our hero in
a far corner, in an unexciting backwater while the world is being shaped and changed by some of histories most famous and infamous character. My question is with this exciting world full of war and personality why do we continue to be in the swamps of a part of the world which still is much unchanged today??? Such a waste, he's a naval officer for gods sake and yet the greatest naval battle of the era and or of all time, Trafalgar is just a casual mention in a passing conversation? Your losing me.

The Captain's Vengeance - A Slow Read
By S. Mann
I should start by saying I'm a fan of this series, however I've found this novel to be the least entertaining that I've read in this story line. If you have found that you are enjoying the series, and you want to continue the saga, then this is a must read. If however you are sampling one of the books to see how you like the Lewrie novels... don't start here.

Pirates and intrigue in New Orleans
By Lynn Harnett
Lambdin's 12th Captain Alan Lewrie adventure begins in 1799 with the sadistic marooning of a small group of sailors on a desolate island in the Dry Tortugas, 70 miles off Key West. The pirates responsible for abandoning the sailors and stealing their boat - a rich prize captured from the French by Capt. Lewrie, Royal Navy - are four young French Creoles from New Orleans. Depraved, idle, rich and spoiled, these two brothers, their beautiful sister and a fourth man, determined to win the girl by proving his bloodlust, have taken up the cause of ousting the Spanish and returning New Orleans to its rightful French masters.

Lewrie, who would very much like to catch these pirates, finds himself down the Mississippi without a boat of his own. He has been ordered on a covert mission to scout out the political landscape and work out the feasibility of a British invasion to take over New Orleans. Posing as a security detail for a wealthy merchant shipper, he soon makes the steamy acquaintance of Charité, the ravishing and wanton female pirate, as well as her brothers and would-be lover, and an American contingent clearly up to the same invasion scouting as Lewrie.

There's a cartoony element to the swashbuckling - lots of "gawping" and "japing" - and the evil characters are particularly, but colorfully, one-dimensional. And the sex scenes are lustily over-the-top. But there's humor too and the historical setting is rich, deep and fascinating. Patrick O'Brian fans may not be satisfied, but those who would just as soon leave the social byplay out of their naval adventure should enjoy it.

Every Salesperson and Executive In America Should Own This Book
By Dave Lakhani
I love this book!

There has never been a more timely book than Business Class, it contains the easiest, most current, and best advice avialable on business etiquette. One of the things I liked most about the book was how easy to read, learn and apply the lessons are.

If you read this book you'll sell more, build better and deeper relationships and feel more confident than you ever have no matter what the business setting. I consider myself very well versed in business etiquette but I was amazed at what I didn't know about current rules.

I can't tell you how many business situations I've been in where people simply had no concept of proper etiquette.

In reading the book, I learned many things and will definately be more prepared and appropriate as a result. I had no idea for example that if your fork fell on the floor at a restaurant that you should leave it and ask for another rather than picking it up and asking for another. I also didn't realize what the appropriate thing to do was when a woman walks to the table in a business setting (you'll be surprised, your mom and dad may have given you bad advice).

Jacqueline does an amazing job of covering every conceivable business situation and shows you how to handle each appropriately and with grace.

If you ever go to business lunches, dinners, mixers, networking events, or interact with clients in any way I strongly recommend this book. You'll be amazed at the power and confidence you feel after reading it.

First Ten Pages I learned Important Information
By Janet E. Spurr
As a true Yankee, I believed I knew all of my manners, but within the first ten pages, of Business Class, I was surprised and kept learning more page by page. I even read parts of the book out loud to corporate girl friends while at the beach. After reading some of the other reviews, I think this is the perfect gift for my college neice and nephew as well as many other friends and business associates. Thank you Jacqueline for bringing back manners in a world that is sometimes too much in a hurry. Please write a book on cell phone etiquette, one which we can pass out to most of the world.

Overrated
By Avellanas
I was really looking forward to reading this book after going through the Amazon.com reviews for this book. I was really disapointed because much of it is common sense. The author goes on and on about the importance of good etiquette, but you probably wouldn't be reading this book if you didn't know that already.

I did learn a few pointers, but not enough to recommend this to anyone.

The White City, by Alec Michod

It is the year of our lord, 1893. The crackle of electricity's first sparks, the mechanical whine of Ferris's wheel, the tinkling of crystal from the majestic city atop the hill--the sounds of a new era pervade the air as the century's last World's Fair commences in Chicago.
But darkness lurks beneath the metropolis so austere it has been dubbed the White City. Strikes loom on the horizon, racism runs rampant, and a murderer unlike any America has ever seen before is on the loose, terrorizing the city. His crimes are so brutal, newspapers have christened him the Husker. Hiding behind the cloak of a city in chaos, he taunts his pursuers, littering the grounds of the fair with the corpses of children as he slips through the shadows.
Dr. Elizabeth Handley, the first forensic psychologist of her kind, has been called in to capture the killer, but when the son of prominent architect William Rockland goes missing, the case takes on an entirely new urgency. In this city of bombastic politics and cutthroat egos, everyone has his own agenda, but time is running out. As she races to save the boy, Dr. Handley fights to maintain her sanity as the line between captor and quarry blurs, and violence casts its spell.
From the depths of the seediest brothels to the pristine enclaves of the elite, The White City is a strange, beguiling first novel, a thriller that masterfully blends fact and fiction. An exhilarating voyeur's glimpse at Chicago in all its glory, it also probes the dark side that was never far from its core.

From Publishers Weekly
It's always a tough choice with historical fiction: risk bogging down the story with painstaking accuracy, or play fast and loose with the facts. Debut novelist Michod takes the latter tack in his fast-paced, sensational rush through the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, where the hunt is on for a serial killer who preys on young boys. Beginning with an immediate sensory whirl - wind whipping off Lake Michigan, bustling exhibition halls, excited crowds - this literate thriller pulls readers along pell-mell until the end. When young Billy Rockland, son of a prominent Chicago architect, wanders away from his parents, he's discovered by the ominous Skurlock, who whisks him into the fair's dark fringes. Meanwhile, the corpses of mutilated boys have the city in a panic. Add to the mix Potter Palmer, a prominent industrialist and friend of the grieving Rocklands; a twisted subplot involving striking workers and blackmail; the intrepid (but sometimes disoriented) forensic psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Handley; and of course the killer himself, who may or may not be the man dragging around the uncomplaining Billy. Michod keeps the suspense high, and he enlivens his tale with plenty of period visuals; he also indulges in a stylized, torqued syntax that can be awkward. While first-novel prose excesses may be excusable, fuzzy characterization is not; the urges and motivations of the main players are implausible at key moments, and readers may find it difficult to suspend disbelief and sympathize. This is a smart, daring attempt to weave fact and fiction, but here's hoping that Michod's next story doesn't get lost in the razzle-dazzle.

From Booklist
It has to be unnerving to finish a historical novel and then learn that your choice of setting and topic has also been turned into a nonfiction book, which has become a best-seller. Michod's heart may have sunk when he learned of the publication of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City [BKL F 15 03], a splendid historical account that juxtaposes the builder of the 1893 Columbian Exposition against a destroyer of life, the serial killer H. H. Holmes, who found victims among female fairgoers. But bad timing aside, Michod's novel remains well worth reading. He jumps off from the Holmes' murders to murders of little boys. He provides a marvelous and historically based female detective. Best of all, his painstaking research brings to life the World's Fair's grand halls and grotesque sideshows. Michod avoids the historical novelist's failing of overwhelming the reader with hard-won detail, managing instead to uses his research to great dramatic effect. Recommend this to readers of the Larson book, who will be fascinated by the fictional portrayal of many of the same events. Connie Fletcher

Review
"A macabre intelligence pervades this novel, as history and fiction by turns complement and taunt one another. The wide range of characters Michod vividly captures at their breaking points are not only confronting a serial killer blended into late nineteenth century Chicago, they are also challenging us to contemplate the fear and thrills we locate uniquely in violence. A thinking person's thriller. "
--Matthew Pearl, author of The New York Times Bestseller The Dante Club

"The White City is a spooky, atmospheric, first-rate historical thriller.
Alec Michod is a bold new writer, who has based his story on America's first
famous serial killer, and set it amidst all the turbulence and color of
turn-of-the-century Chicago."
--Kevin Baker, author of The New York Times Notable Book Dreamland

"Alec Michod's The White City is an exuberant first novel fully engaged with the extravagant display of the Chicago Worlds Fair of 1893. Delightfully plotted as a thriller, any number of fumbling detectives ply their trade in the false landscape of the phantasmagoric city. But Michod is up to more than an entertainment. He unmasks the greed and deception that lies under the fantasy and fun, to expose the underside of the American Dream."--Maureen Howard, author of The New York Times Notable Book Big As Life

"Find a blanket, pour a drink, settle beneath your lamp: Here is a stylish and irresistible novel that will ruin your sleep and follow you into the day. Something sinister is afoot in 1893 Chicago, and you won't get much done until peace is restored. But be warned, however, because in Alec Michod's dazzling The White City, the wind off Lake Michigan has a way of playing with the light." -- Peter Gadol, author of Light at Dusk and The Long Rain

"A thinking person's thriller. " (Matthew Pearl, author of The New York Times Bestseller The Dante Club)

Annoying prose, hateful characters, erroneous information add up to complete disaster.
By Lisanne Freese
If you want a distorted version of historical events, with mostly fictitious characters, this book's for you. The author states "Events were shifted around to better adhere to the novel's dramatic arc." Main characters Clemantis, the Rocklands, Thom Nix, Hannibal Skurlock and the Walsh Gang are entirely fictitious. I'd describe the writing style as artsy-fartsy horrendously mixed with dream state. I didn't like any of the characters, and found the book, when sensible, to be plodding and maddening. Not sure how I got this book, perhaps confused it with the far better Devil in the White City. Regardless, this one's headed to the thrift store asap. Spend your reading time on something of higher quality.

The White City
By Janet L. DePuma
I found this book to be very "choppy". The author had the opportunity to use an excellent storyline, but his writing was very hard to follow. He jumped from one subject to another and you had to stop reading and think about what character he was talking about. It was very confusing. I finished the book, but I didn't find it as good as I'd hoped. I doubt that I would ever purchase another of Alec Michod books.

Historical inaccuracies and opaque, hazy writing doom this book
By Amazon Prime Customer
I found several historical miscues in the first few pages. The Ferris Wheel running since May? Women wearing hoops? Did Michon do any research at all? Even aside from the obvious screw-ups (for no reason -- I'm willing to accept changing history if it needs to be changed for the story, like the ways he changed Holmes, but things like a throwaway line about the Ferris Wheel or the clothing? The only reason that's mucked up is sloppiness), the writing style is practically impenetrable. I found it impossible to tell what was going on, what was happening to whom, or who any of the characters were supposed to be. They had no identifying characteristics. None. And the murders seemed to be created to be as gross and shocking as possible, without really adding up to anything in terms of creating a profile for the killer.

I was really disappointed in this book. Oh, and I don't know who the Husker was because I didn't bother to finish, which is practically unheard of for me and mysteries.

Beyond Tears: Living After Losing a Child, by Ellen Mitchell, Carol Barkin, Audrey Cohen, Lorenza Colletti, Barbara Eisenberg, Barbara Gol

The death of a child is that unimaginable loss no parent ever expects to face. In Beyond Tears, nine mothers share their individual stories of how to survive in the darkest hour. They candidly share with other bereaved parents what to expect in the first year and long beyond:

* Harmonious relationships can become strained
* There is a new definition of what one considers "normal"
* The question "how many children do you have?" can be devastating
* Mothers and fathers mourn and cope differently
* There simply is no answer to the question "why?"

This sharing in itself is a catharsis and because each of these mothers lost her child at least seven years ago, she is in a unique position to provide perspective on what newly bereaved parents can expect to feel. The mothers of Beyond Tears offer reassurance that the clouds of grief do lessen with time and that grieving parents will find a way to live, and even laugh again.

From Publishers Weekly
Each of the nine mothers who contributes to this short but eloquent volume lost a child who was in his or her teens or 20s, just beginning to fulfill the promise of their brief lives. The mothers found solace by coming together and sharing their pain: as Rita Volpe writes in an opening poem, "Together we have found new ways to live and love and remember the life." Here they share what they've learned for other parents experiencing a similar tragedy, offering concrete advice and emotional reassurance (despite what the culture tells us, there is no closure, writes Cohen in her introduction-but there is a chance to enjoy life again). These bereaved mothers discuss frankly the force of their rage and guilt; the impact of the loss of a child on their marriages (their inability to have sexual relations, the difficulty of coming out of their own pain enough to acknowledge that of their husbands); and their ways of coping. Bereaved parents will find comfort, sympathy and support in this powerful, honest sharing of one of life's most painful experiences.

Finally I felt understood...
By Mom with a broken heart
Since my son was killed in an auto accident I read every book I could looking for help. I I got more help from this book than any other...It was a like a lifeline. After reading it I bought an additional copy which I actually cut up and left parts around my home for reassurance and comfort. When someone asks me what can they do for a friend who has lost a child, I recommend this book. Since it is written by nine mothers (and nine fathers) who each have a different perspective and different way their child died, this is a book for every bereaved parent, but it is also a book that should be read by everyone. The loss of a child is a loss like no other and this book is a guide for family, friends and professionals offering insight and understanding and an inside unobstructed view into the real world of the bereaved parent.

Best book on the subject that I've read
By S. Krulwich
Candid and compelling

I am also a bereaved mother. These nine women have bared their most innermost feelings in this honest and powerful book. It is the best book I have read, (and reread), on this subject. I highly recommend it to not only to all bereaved parents, but family, friends and professionals who care enough to acquire some insight into what life is really like after losing a child. They have bravely shared their hearts and bared their souls in order to give others hope.

the most horrific loss
By J. Hasnas Gold
This book connects across the gulf of emptiness and loss that bereaved parents are intimately familiar with. It seems to speak the language, and address the pains that those who have not grieved a lost child can only fathom.

It is also offers hope for those who are new to this grief and describes the different way of living that now becomes life.

I recommend this book for anyone who has lost a child, or knows somwone who has. As a therapist who works with grieving parents, I can attest to the help Beyond Tears continues to bring with each additional reading.

From Publishers Weekly
All good tales of Antarctic adventuring, whether fiction or nonfiction, feature a murderously difficult trek across a boundless expanse of frozen icescape. Dickinson's foray into the genre is no exception. Famed British explorer Julian Fitzgerald and Norwegian Carl Norland, his partner, are attempting to walk across Antarctica at its broadest point and have fallen short of the mark by 80 miles. When the plane sent to rescue them crashes, their only hope for salvation is the scientific station Capricorn, some 300 miles away. Capricorn is a drilling base headed by scientist Lauren Burgess, who, along with her four-person team, has made a startling discovery in a fresh water lake that lies 2,000 feet under the ice beneath the base. Lauren rushes off with love-interest Sean and rescues the two explorers, but winter sets in, preventing evacuation, and Fitzgerald is soon revealed to be a black-hearted villain plotting a triumphant return to England as the hero of the expedition-even if he has to kill everyone else in the process. Norland dies in a disastrous fire that destroys the base, forcing the team, hounded by a now insane, ax-wielding, snowmobile-mounted Fitzgerald, to trek back to the site of the original plane crash, where there is a transmitter. Dickinson (The Other Side of Everest) certainly knows his stuff, having personally cheated death on both Everest and the Antarctic ice. Readers unfamiliar with the stories of real Arctic explorers-Shackleton, Scott, Byrd, etc.-will find this a more exciting read than those already acquainted with the fascinating true life stories.

Awesome Antarctic Adventure
By Kara J. Jorges
Lauren Burgess is fulfilling the dream of a lifetime running Capricorn Base, a scientific research station in the Antarctic interior. Three hundred miles away, an expedition consisting of famous explorer Julian Fitzgerald and his companion, Carl Norland, has run into trouble. The two men would have been the first to cross Antarctica on foot at its widest point if they hadn't run out of supplies and begun starving to death 80 miles from the goal. The rescue plane they summon crashes, so Lauren and one of her four teammates, Sean, ride to the rescue, taking the two explorers and Richard, a journalist who survived the crash, back to Capricorn to wait out the winter. It is soon apparent that Julian Fitzgerald is not the hero the media has made him out to be; rather he is dangerously reckless with resources and lives, and Lauren and Sean believe he kept food supplies to himself while leaving Carl and Richard to starve while awaiting rescue. When he announces his plans to finish his trek, demanding a ride back to the crash site to resume his journey, Lauren refuses, and his behavior really gets out of control. Suffice it to say, the team at Capricorn Base finds themselves on the run with almost no resources, in a race to find rescue in the most inhospitable place on earth.

While the story is intriguing and compelling, there were a few minor weak points. Julian Fitzgerald vacillates between being paranoid and just a spoiled brat in a way that lacks consistency. Also, while I liked the outcome, the ending left me feeling cheated. We had been with these characters through an entire Antarctic winter, suffered every step with them on their arduous journey, felt all their hunger and pain, and in the end, though we know their fate, they fade into the background instead of having the book show us their triumph. The same number of pages in the postscript that focused elsewhere would have been better spent with our team of six hardy heroes, and delivering comeuppance to the villain. That was an event I DESERVED to see after all I vicariously went through at his expense, but it didn't happen.

While it is a black mark against it, the ending does not ruin the book because I did like the outcome, and overall it was very well written. Though it contained the clichéd scene of the good guy being too good to finish the villain when she had the chance, thereby needlessly further endangering her team before belatedly growing the spine needed to try to fix things when it was already too late, it was still nonetheless a very good Antarctic thriller. I don't think I've ever read a book with better descriptions of that continent and its frozen landscape. The heroes were also a likeable lot, and the villain deliciously detestable, as they should be in a good adventure tale. In all, Black Ice is a satisfying page-turner.

An Excellent Read
By M. Alley
Some of what others here have written is true, but I quite vehemently disagree with the person who typified the book as "too sexist for belief." That couldn't be more wrong. Lauren, the FEMALE protagonist, is the proverbial Rock that kept the entire station together through any and all amounts of adversity. She was The Leader from beginning to end! Yes, she made one particularly frustrating decision, but not ALL the men are perfect either -- many are weak, shallow and, considering Fitzgerald, the MALE antagonist, much worse.

I found Dickinson's book to be engrossing and quite realistic. He clearly has the Cold Adventure Chops to write about this kind of thing, considering his 1996 venture up Mt. Everest which resulted in his 2000 book "The Other Side Of Everest" -- already well reviewed here at Amazon. In fact, I just ordered his non-fiction book whilst writing this review. And no, I'm not a Dickinson Shill. I simply purchase what pleases me and what looks good.

I'll not be a Plot Spoiler here; simply suffice to say that, if you're looking for a realistic portrayal of Antarctic adventure, this is your book. The book isn't sexist or racist or ageist or iceist or any other kind of "ist" you can imagine.

Someone had an agenda in that review and, for whatever reason, a good read wasn't on it.

Bottom line? You can't beat an excellent adventure like this for $6.99.

Just a HAIR dissatisfying? Fitzgerald's future. On the other hand, one could say that Dickinson took the superior stance and avoided going for the obvious in terms of retribution and revenge.

POLAR PERIL
By Michael Butts
I've always had this esoteric, quasi-romantic idea that visiting or seeing Antarctica would be a real thrill...but after reading BLACK ICE, those notions are quickly overshadowed by the fierce brutality of the South Pole. Explorer/author Matt Dickinson has created a pretty realistic novel, although it certainly has its share of adventurous implausibilities, but overall a very good read.

The plot focuses on professional explorer Julian Fitzpatrick and his novice comrade, Carl Norlund, who have been attempting to be the first explorers to cross the entire continent of Antarctica, only to fail and need help seriously. When a rescue plane crashes in an attempt to rescue them, a nearby scientific team is called upon to help rescue them. This team is led by Dr. Lauren Burgess, who is about to make a shocking discovery in an underground lake and who doesn't really want to abandon her quest. But humane morality intercedes and she and her crew are off to save them.

Of course, Julian Fitzpatrick is the consummate self-inflated villain who doesn't want the world to know his own dark secrets about the failure, and soon his maniacal acts leaves the science crew to fend for themselves when he blows up their complex.

Dickinson weaves a pretty good tale but I wasn't totally happy with the book's resolution; I would have liked for Julian's exposition to be part of the narrative; although his fate is ironic, it didn't give me a complete feeling of closure.
