Amazon.com Review
Why is it so hard to resist the temptation of chocolate? Because chocolate triggers the release of natural opiates in the brain. It's a drug "strong enough to keep us coming back for more," according to nutritional researcher Neal Barnard, M.D., president and founder of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. Cheese also releases mild opiates during digestion--no wonder we crave it. In Breaking the Food Seduction, Barnard helps you understand and overcome your food cravings. He explains which foods "hook" us the most and why, and what to do to break free when you want to decrease the calories and fat that accompany these seductive foods. Cheese, for example, is about 70 percent saturated fat and has more cholesterol, ounce for ounce, than a steak.

Barnard offers seven steps to breaking your food cravings, devoting a chapter to each one, with anecdotes and plenty of clear, sound, practical tips. Then he presents guidelines for healthy eating using "the New Four Food Groups"--vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains--with a three-week menu plan and 113 healthful, vegan recipes. Highly recommended for people who want to understand their food cravings and finally get rid of them. --Joan Price

Excellent, Thorough and Simple
By Higher Consciousness
I'm a nurse who became vegan after doing a lot of research on nutrition. Dr. Barnard's book contains facts about meat and dairy that I never came across before, some of which are shocking.

The entire book is thorough yet written in a way that even beginners can comprehend.

What sets this book apart for me from other "diet" books is that Dr. Barnard explains the biochemistry of what happens to your brain when the food hits your tongue. Finally, those with food addictions don't have to feel guilty or embarrassed anymore - there is a rational explanation.

This book would be an excellent gift for anyone.

Remember, each time you pick up a fork, you are making a life or death decision!

this is amazing. I'm buying it for all my friends

I am so glad I read this. It's science-based, real and incredibly helpful information. I did the three-week kick-start and thought I'd be counting the days till I could stop. I completely lost track and have no interest in ever going back. It might sound radical when you first look at it, but seriously he's on to something with changing our physical reaction to food. Following his advice does not mean never enjoying food again...it just means not being a slave to it. It means loving food that--as he puts it--loves you back. I never thought I could make such a radical change and cannot believe how effortless it was. THANK YOU DR. BARNARD!

An excellent book on nutrition
By JD
This book will disabuse you of many fallacies about food, nutrition and dieting. It is the best book I have read on nutrition. The book tells you in clear language what foods to eat and what foods to avoid. But far more importantly, it will equip you with the knowledge--backed up with scientific evidence--to break the food addiction. Some foods will increase cravings and induce you to further eat the wrong foods. Cravings and addictions are often at the root of poor nutrition. A person who smokes, usually knows smoking is bad for them, and a person who drinks too much usually understands it is deleterious to his health. Likewise, people who eat the wrong foods usually are aware they are not eating wisely. The problem is cravings and addictions drive their behavior.

This book lives up to its title: Breaking the Food Seduction. You don't fight the cravings, you break the cravings. That is an important distinction and it is the thesis of this book. I am very glad I found this book. It helped me create healthier eating habits.
