Let the squeamish beware!

Watch Your F*cking Language takes a no-holds-barred approach to taboo words and expressions. It shows you how to use them to your advantage -- and have fun doing so. Building on the lessons learned in English as a Second F*cking Language, this book emphasizes traditional English swears as well as powerful (and hidden) expressions from other cultures and languages.

Through numerous examples, it puts the real language of real people into context:

FLOYD: I just heard a Dan Quayle speech. It was really f*cking confusing.
RUBY: I just got back from a Mongolian cluster f*ck. It was really confusing f*cking.

The name of the game is communication, and Watch Your F*cking Language shows readers how to hammer home their messages with confidence and gusto.

Among its features:

*Numerous examples of proper (and so-called improper) usage
*An Idioms section that emphasizes the niceties of swearing
*A "Need to Know, "Nice to Know," and "Forget It" system for identifying swear words
*A Final F*cking Exam

Give this guy a Bronx cheer!!
By Robert M. Miskimon
Once again, Dr. Johnson has elucidated some of the darkest (and funniest) corners of the human mind and human speech. His "grasp" of the language is impressive, his "ear" for subtleties true, and his "delivery" powerful and overwhelming. I think Dr. Johnson should start an Institute for Correct Speech, Thinking and Living. His example shines before the world like a beacon of sanity in the darkness of this gloomy age.

A GREAT BOOK!
By Jennifer Morrison
This is a sweet and funny read--truly humorous, and filled with many tongue-in-cheek gags. It's not set up in the typical essay format of most humor books. Instead it's done as a dream dictionary, which allows it to poke fun at all the celebrity icons that seem to inundate our media--and, yes, I guess our dreams. I've bought a couple as funny birthday gifts for my girlfriends who are into namedropping...because they will certainly get it!

Loved this book
By Helen of Troy
I'm a person who loves fashion and clothes, and this book was given to me as a gift from a friend who often teases me about this. The book is set up like a dream dictionary, although it's more tongue-in-cheek & not to be taken too seriously! The author's many pop-cultural interpretations of dreams tickle the funny bone. I highly recommend it as a beach book, or just to keep on the bedside table for quick & fun reading anytime.

Bissell uses the same chronological format and mentor-based system that have made Law School Confidential and Business School Confidential such treasured and popular guides. It takes the reader step-by-step through the entire med school process--from thinking about, applying to, and choosing a medical school and program, through the four-year curriculum, internships, residencies, and fellowships, to choosing a specialty and finding the perfect job.
With a foreword by Chair of the Admissions Committee at Dartmouth Medical School Harold M. Friedman, M.D., Med School Confidential provides what no other book currently does: a comprehensive, chronological account of the full medical school experience.

From Publishers Weekly
Miller, author of Law School Confidential and Business School Confidential has teamed with Bissel, a doctor of emergency medicine, for the latest entry. A guide for readers thinking about attending medical school, or in the early stages of beginning an M.D., Miller and Bissell begin upbeat: "It's hard to argue with a career choice that allows you to save lives, or at least improve them every day." The arduous and complicated seven-to-ten year path they lay out, however, is another story. Reading the book straight through may do more to discourage readers than to help them on their way, but Miller and Bissell are clear and thorough, from undergraduate pre-med work to med school applications to grueling med school coursework to the various standardized tests, clinical duties and internships until, finally, the all-important career choice: where to spend your residency. Comments from several young practicing doctors ("Med School Confidential Mentors") don't illuminate much, and the authors can resort to banal generalizations that are little help: "The key is not knowing what you want to do, but what kind of person you want to become.". This book reveals very little of the personal, emotional journey of becoming a doctor, but as an overview of the academic rigors of the med student life, this guide is top-notch.

medical student or want to be one? you need this book
By Mai. A
I loved this book, I start this year and I was kind of confused since the whole college regimen is different now and I needed an overall outline or overview of what to expect what should I do, this book covers it. although it mainly speaks about medicine in the US which can be different than other countries regarding admission, test, and curriculum outlines for preclinical years. for me its system blocks, like cardiology block will cover all anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, ..etc. then next block is another system. but in the book they explained as first year would be anatomy biochem physiology embryology..etc and second year pharmacology pathology..
but I've benefited form the learning techniques and time management tips and overall medical student lifestyle

Great read for someone interested in med school
By D. Vrecko
I bought this book with the hopes that it could be of some insight as to whether or not med school would be for me. After reading it, I can say that it was that and much more. Not only did I get what seems to be an acurate portrayal of what it takes to get into med school and the road to being a doctor, but also extremely practical ideas and tools to help be successful on every major step along the way. The writing was clear and concise and seemed to be geared towards an extreme usefulness for a serious med student or potential med student. I will be applying for med school and reading this book along the way to help me excel through it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone seriously considering med school or who is in med school and would like some useful pointers on how to choose your clinical rotations, pre-pare well for the USMLEs, apply for residencies, etc.

EDIT March 2010:
I am in my first year of medical school and I still fully endorse this book. I can finally say from the other side of the application, that it was very helpful in the application process. I have lent out this book to a number of friends interested in the idea of pursuing medicine and they seem to have appreciated the content as well.

It's not as if Nel Innes doesn't have enough on her plate already: keeping track of her unnervingly beautiful teenage daughter, sorting out a house full of animals, and organizing a farmers' market in the picturesque Paradise Fields. The last thing she needs is yet another complication in her life, but when her old friend Sir Gerald dies, and his son, Pierce, accompanied by his glamorous American wife, takes possession of the property, it seems that preserving the Fields is not on his list of priorities.

Nel takes up arms, determined to fight for the meadow and the market she loves. But who can she trust? She's pretty sure her friends Sacha and Vivian are on her side, but her sensible boyfriend of six months, Simon, an estate agent, is less encouraging. And then there's Jake, the infuriating yet attractive stranger who surprised her with a kiss under the mistletoe at the last market before Christmas. From Publishers Weekly
Romance blooms for a long-celibate widow in this cozy potboiler by British hen-lit veteran Fforde (Highland Fling; etc.). Nel Innes has kept busy in the 10 years since her beloved husband died, raising her three children (the youngest of whom, 18-year-old daughter Fleur, is growing up far too fast for Nel's taste), taking care of the family's many dogs and organizing a farmer's market in the town's Paradise Fields. But when local bigwig Sir Gerald dies, leaving his estate (and the connecting land that a hospice uses for recreation and fund-raising) to his developer son, Pierce, and Pierce's sexy American wife, Kerry Anne, Nel is furious—how dare these soulless big-city chumps take away the land the hospice so desperately needs? And how, fueled by righteous anger as she is, can she find herself falling so hard for the couple's dashing and equally big-city solicitor, Jake Demerand? Though Fforde's plots are often rather similar—smalltown woman fights the good fight and wins, falling in love with a man she initially deems an opponent—charming, lovable secondary characters carry the day, and funny scenes such as Nel going undercover to track Fleur to a trendy nightclub are by turns poignant and hilarious. This sweet literary equivalent of warm fuzzy slippers will help bring Fforde, who has a sizable following in Britain, further onto American radar.

From Booklist
Fforde's heroines are usually spunky, can-do types who spend their days cheerfully sorting out the dilemmas of others. Nel Innis fits the standard quite nicely but in her own way is quite different from previous incarnations. A widow for 10 years, she has raised her three nearly adult children on her own. They, along with the family dogs, vast numbers of friends, and multiple charitable interests, have filled her life quite well, if chastely, until now. In comes Jake Demerand, mysterious, fearfully attractive, and, unfortunately, working as the lawyer representing the opposition in a land battle that threatens her most valued causes. Paradise Fields is in the Cotswolds, the site of a hospice for seriously ill children and a seasonal farmer's market. The current owner wants to build houses. Development is inevitable; how it will be done is the issue that Nel takes on. Will she succeed? What happens with Jake? More passionately sexual than some of Fforde's previous novels, this is nevertheless diverting in its own very British way. Danise Hoover

Very Nice Read
By G. Greene
The first word that comes to mind after reading this novel is "pleasant" (a vastly underrated adjective IMHO). I haven't read this author before, and it was such a nice experience to read a book that was more about ordinary people, trying to live their lives as best they could, than about plot machinations and torrid sex scenes every other page (not that there's anything wrong with that). One comes to care about these characters and sympathize with their struggles of having to compromise about a real estate development, acknowledging that the children are really growing up and parents are really growing old.

So if you are looking for a well written book with strong character development, this book's the ticket. Nicely done!

Far from paradise
By Digby
My initial reaction was that perhaps this was one of Ms. Fforde's early works before she perfected her craft, or an attempt at writing something "screenplay-worthy," because it was contrived, too cute, and the characters were ridiculous. I've read and enjoyed two books by Ms. Fforde - "Stately Pursuits" and "Wild Designs" - so I knew her style, but "Paradise Fields" was just too hard to take. Nel has been dating a man for six months, and has known him for years, but they've never had sex, and he's never indicated an interest in it. Really? Her daughter and friends all dislike the boyfriend; he seems to dislike Nel's children, her parenting style and her [lack of] housekeeping; and she doesn't really seem to enjoy his company [see - dating for six months with no sex] - but she keeps him around because he fixes things around her house? Every novel doesn't have to be a feminist manifesto, but please. And all of the "meet-cute" scenes with Jake just grow tiresome - of course, he runs the soccer league, and of course he's somehow involved in an incident in which a soccer ball ends up in an elaborate cake she has baked, and of course he and some colleagues run into her in London (must be a much smaller city than I thought). These incidents just seemed made for a movie - which isn't necessarily bad, but didn't play out well on the page. And Nel constantly - and I mean, constantly - disparages her looks and weight, when everyone else in the world, including hunky, younger-man Jake, thinks she's gorgeous. Between her willingness to have a loveless, sexless relationship with a guy she doesn't seem to like (but, hey, at least he buys her dinner occasionally), and her inability to see how gorgeous she apparently is, I thought she desperately needed some therapy. Hmm, guess I didn't like this book...

If you like european romances...
By A. Pennington
Nel has been a widow for ten years and is comfortable with life in her little village. Her two sons are at university and her daughter is almost finished high school. She is determined to remain unmarried until her children are independent so she has no complaints about her stuffy boyfriend, Simon, although her children do not like him and she never has lustful thoughts about him. She keeps busy with charity activities to support a local hospice. She is not bothered about the fact that she has not had sex since her husband died so Nel is surprised when a handsome younger man kisses her at the Christmas fair.

Nel is working hard to save Paradise Fields, the estate where she organizes a farmers market which supports the hospice. The new owners want to develop the land for cheap housing. Nel meets with the owners to oppose the development and discovers that their lawyer is Jake, the man who kissed her. Jake tries to date Nel, but she cannot believe a handsome London lawyer is interested in a plump, older woman and suspects he is just trying to get her to agree to the development plans.

When she ends up in Jake's bed one night, Nel puts it down to a mistake, but Jake keeps pursuing her and even seems to be trying to help her save Paradise Fields. Then Simon asks her to marry him and encourages her to agree to the development plan.

Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards, by Julia Parker

The Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards is a "re-publication" of a famous fortune-telling book written in the 1920s by one "Gypsy Rickwood". Nobody knows who she was, but in that original edition, she said that the method is a very old one - practiced by wandering gypsies long before it was ever set down on paper. Based on the Romany tradition of fortune-telling, astrologer Julia Parker has translated the original questions and answers to suit today's lifestyles and preoccupations. With each book comes a beautifully designed pack of tarot cards. To ask a question about the future, simply shuffle the pack, concentrate on the question, and draw a card. Detailed explanations are provided in the accompanying book. Will you be successful? How many times will you fall in love? Are you wasting your talents at your current job? What is your lucky number? These and many more fundamental questions regarding love, life, and chance are all answered in this wonderful little package.

From Publishers Weekly
In the 1920s, legend has it, a Romany named "Gypsy Rickwood" published a fortune-telling manual based on ancient techniques. His or her (we no longer know if it was a man or a woman) wisdom is re-published in this book-and-card pack, which helps readers tell their own fortunes. First, a person looks up a question in the short book—what will my home be like? Will I travel extensively? What is my lucky time of year? Then, he or she picks a card and matches its number and symbol with the guidebook’s answers. The included deck of cards is not a tarot deck, but rather an ordinary playing deck with four suits and 52 cards. What’s striking is that some of the answers seem to be unexpectedly fun and tongue-in-cheek; in response to a query about potential wedding presents the questioner will receive answers that include a garrulous parrot, an umbrella that the questioner will promptly lose and "a number of useless trifles." Some may take this augury seriously; others may find it mildly amusing as a parlor game.

Not worth it
By Morgan Evans
Working as a fortune teller and psychic I like to buy various decks of cards that I come across. Particularly interesting to me are the "Gypsy" or "LeNormand" style cards. Upon seeing this book and deck set in a local bookstore I decided to purchase it hoping that it would have a bit of detail about the interpretation of LeNormand style cards, or at the very least how to interpret regular playing cards.

This is anything but. It's a cheaply made deck of playing cards (I can buy poker cards of higher quality for $2.00!) The book is simply one where you ask your question and look up the answer next to the corresponding card. No interpretation, no predicting, just a nonsense answer with little relevance.

Not Worth the Price. More Like Parlor Game.
By El Brujo
This set is not worth 15.95, and I highly recommend those that are interested in learning a form of Fortune Telling to look elsewhere. What you are basically spending your money is on a nicely made Box, because the deck is just a regular playing deck that you can get anywhere for around 1 dollar. The Book, even though a re-printing of an old book, is horrible. And sometimes things that are old should be forgotten. The answers are ridiculous.

The format is quit simple, that any 7 year old kid could follow. It gives you an out line of how readings would go. Example. Does He Like Me? Shall I be sought after? What is My Greatest Attribute? And So Forth. Then the answers are ridicules. "Yes" "No" Maybe" "Today's Lost" Honestly I kept getting reminded of the Magic 8 Ball that you shake and the answer appeared in the little blue window.

If you want interested in Divination learn from a cheap Rider Wait Tarot, and you can find books afordable relating to the Rider Wait anywhere. If you want to learn Fortune Telling, "Gypsy" style, skip this and pick up any regular Deck of Cards, and check out the book Fortune Telling with Playing Cards by Sophia. Also the Fortune Teller's Deck by Jane Lyle is way better. If it is the Gypsy that got your attention to this item.. Check out Raymond Buckland's The Buckland Gypsy Fortune Telling Deck. Any of those can be purchased here at Amazon.com and are way better.

Delightful Little Parlor Game...
By Ella
These cards are an absolute delight and I, personally, just adore the historical context. This was more or less a parlor game in the 1920's and was never intended as a hard core spiritual oracle or anything deeper than that. While it's true that they are quite simplistic in their design and usage as compared to say a tarot deck, I think that helps to add to their "every person" appeal. Anyone can pick up this deck and use it with little to no difficulty - whether they choose to use it for fun or for a little bit of guidance is up to them. As I like to say - sometimes the best answer is the one we get in the simplest of ways. Enjoy!

The Not So Easy Sudoku!

This book is definitely not for the beginner. I would rank it at Green Belt level. I recommend "Totally Sudoku" by Penny Press that has mostly easy, and some moderate and challenging puzzles for the beginner.

Not easy! But great!
By oldun
These are really not for beginners. But once you've moved up a little in sudoku skills, this is great, the best! I like the big grid with only one per page. And I like having a lot in one book.

I was not crazy about the fact that, even though the book itself says it's $9.95, amazon charged me two dollars MORE! What's up with that?

God's Bestseller: William Tyndale, Thomas More, and the Writing of the English Bible---A Story of Martyrdom and Betrayal, by Brian Moynaha

The English Bible---the mot familiar book in our language---is the product of a man who was exiled, vilified, betrayed, then strangled, then burnt.

William Tyndale left England in 1524 to translate the word of God into English. This was heresy, punishable by death. Sir Thomas More, hailed as a saint and a man for all seasons, considered it his divine duty to pursue Tyndale. He did so with an obsessive ferocity that, in all probability, led to Tyndale's capture and death.

The words that Tyndale wrote during his desperate exile have a beauty and familiarity that still resonate across the English-speaking world: "Death, where is thy sting?...eat, drink, and be merry...our Father which art in heaven."

His New Testament, which he translated, edited, financed, printed, and smuggled into England in 1526, passed with few changes into subsequent versions of the Bible. So did those books of the Old Testament that he lived to finish.

Brian Moynahan's lucid and meticulously researched biography illuminates Tyndale's life, from his childhood in England, to his death outside Brussels. It chronicles the birth pangs of the Reformation, the wrath of Henry VIII, the sympathy of Anne Boleyn, and the consuming malice of Thomas More. Above all, it reveals the English Bible as a labor of love, for which a man in an age more spiritual than our own willingly gave his life.

From Publishers Weekly
The story of William Tyndale's translation of the Bible is familiar. Caught up in the Reformation's efforts to provide ordinary readers with the Scriptures in the vernacular, Tyndale set out to produce a faithful translation of the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts of the Old and New Testament. As journalist Moynahan points out in this exhaustively detailed biography, Tyndale's desire to complete such a translation brought him into conflict with the king and his court, for the fruits of the Reformation had yet to make their way into England. Thus, Tyndale set out on a life of self-imposed exile in Germany and Amsterdam, where he translated and printed his Bible. As his work made its way into England-thanks in large part to Anne Boleyn's advocacy-Sir Thomas More, one of England's most active heretic hunters, attempted in every possible way to have Tyndale tried as a heretic. Moynahan recounts the oft-told story of Tyndale's subterfuge and his remarkable contribution to the history of Bible translation while recreating the political and religious intrigue of early 16th-century England. Moynahan captures well More's hatred of Tyndale, whom he called "a hellhound in the kennel of the devil," as well as Tyndale's burning desire to contribute to God's work through Bible translation, even if it meant death at the stake. As Moynahan points out, Tyndale's translation still exists in the King James Version, since his words account for 84% of its New Testament and 76% of its Old Testament.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The Bible contains few stories more compelling than the one Moynahan tells here: the saga of how William Tyndale defied Church and King--at the eventual cost of his own life--to translate and print Holy Writ in English. In a narrative taut with tension and alive with fiery personalities, Moynahan chronicles the improbable career of the Oxford scholar who risked everything to produce a vernacular version of Scripture. When ecclesiastical opposition frustrated his translation work in England, Tyndale journeyed to the continent, there enduring 11 years of privation and danger as he translated and published the New Testament and much of the Old Testament, soon smuggled to eager English readers. Shrewd detective work enables Moynahan to track the fugitive during these difficult years, when royal and ecclesiastical agents frequently attempted to ensnare him. But in his most astonishing feat of sleuthing, Moynahan discovers that the man who masterminded Tyndale's eventual capture and execution was probably the renowned saint Thomas More, who himself died beneath the executioner's ax for opposing Henry VIII's divorce. Though he acknowledges that Tyndale and More shared ironically similar views of the king's matrimonial maneuvers, Moynahan generally accentuates the sharp contrast between the fearless champion of individual conscience and the ferocious foe of heretics. A gripping historical drama. Bryce Christensen

A Story Well Told
By Eutychus
Moynahan weaves a tale of political intrigue, outlining the passion and courage of the small group of English Reformers, most notably, William Tyndale. Tyndale, a skilled translator, is finally getting his due, primarily through the efforts of David Daniell, and the Tyndale Society. This book, along with Daniell's well-written biography of Tyndale, paints a clear picture of this good man's work.

On the other hand, Moynahan fails to complete a clear link between Tyndale's betrayer, Phillips, and Thomas More. While More clearly has much to answer for with his hate and personal involvement in the torture of English Reformers, he cannot, without doubt, be clearly charged with the martyrdom of Tyndale.

Moynahan's book is well-researched, with a sizable appendix on his sources. It would be an improvement to add clearer, specific references.

Other than that, well-done.

An Excellent Biography
By Tim Challies
God's Bestseller is the second biography of Tyndale I have read this year and one of only a few produced in recent decades. Written by Brian Moynahan, the subtitle provides a glimpse of the author's emphases: "William Tyndale, Thomas More, and the Writing of the English Bible--A Story of Martyrdom and Betrayal." Less-scholarly than David Daniell's William Tyndale: A Biography, God's Bestseller is also more readable, as evidenced by the Mail on Sunday's endorsement which suggests it is "almost worthy of LeCarre."

Though William Tyndale died almost 500 years ago, we continue to read and enjoy his Bible. The first man to translate Scripture into English, much of Tyndale's language and vocabulary continue to used commonly within the church and without. He coined words and phrases such as My brother's keeper, passover and scapegoat. Other commonly used phrases include let there be light, the powers that be, my brother's keeper, the salt of the earth and a law unto themselves. His mastery of English, though the language was still in its infancy, was unparalleled in his age. "In the begynnynge was the worde, and the worde was with God: the the word was God. The same was in the begynnynge with God. All thinges were made by it and with out it was made nothinge that was made. In it was lyfe and the lyfe was the lyght of men. And the light shyneth in the darknes but the darknes comprehended it not." Those verses passed into the King James and subsequent translations almost untouched.

Tyndale's mastery of the language is evident in passages of Scripture he was able to translate only in part before his untimely death. Read aloud these passages from Song of Solomon as they were written by Tyndale and then by the writers of the King James. "Up and haste my love, my dove, my bewtifull and come away..." The King James renders this same passage with far less skill, "Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away." Tyndale writes, "For now is wynter gone and the rayne departed and past." The King James bumbles, "For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over, and gone." The cadence, the use of language, is unmatched. We can only imagine how Tyndale would have rendered the Psalms, Job and other poetic books had he been granted long life.

But as we know, Tyndale was not able to complete his translation of the Old Testament. He did not write his own epitaph as was the custom at the time. But as Moynahan points out, a passage he left from 1 Corinthians seems to serve well: "'And though I gave my body even that I burned, and yet had no love, it profiteth me nothing.' That used love and not charity was technical evidence of his heresy, of course, and the prime reason why More wanted him brunt. But Tyndale did not die for charity; he died for love, for the love of God's words and of their readers, and the most familiar work in the English language is thereby given the added grace of being a labour of love." We see this love evident in his reply to Henry VIII when offered safe passage to his native England. Were Henry to grant even a bare text of Scripture to the common people, Tyndale promised, "I shall immediately make faithful promise never to write more, nor abide two days in these parts after the same: but immediately to repair unto his realm, and there most humbly submit myself at the feet of his royal majesty, offering my body to suffer what pain or torture, yea, what death his grace will, so this be obtained. And till that time, I will abide the asperity of all chances, whatsoever shall come, and endure my life in as many pains as it is able to bear and suffer." The king would never submit to so audacious a demand and soon decreed that Tyndale be hunted down and killed. Though agents of Henry were never able to find Tyndale, he did eventually fall into the hands of the church authorities and was put to death. His last words, soon to be a rallying cry for English Protestants, were near-prophetic. "Oh Lord, open the King of England's eyes," he cried. Only a few short years later, Henry authorized an English translation of the Bible and, ironically, one based largely on the work of Tyndale.

Tyndale's name may not be widely known, but his influence is still felt. "Tyndale's traces are everywhere, of course. 'That old tongue, with its clang and its flavour,' as the critic Edmund Wilson wrote of the Bible, 'that we have been living with all our lives,' is Tyndale's tongue. Its cadence, its rolling and happy phrases, its consolations and the elegance of its solace, are his."

Despite his influence and his importance to the development of the English language, Tyndale is relatively unknown to both Christians and non-Christians. It is to our detriment that we forget about this great man of faith who gave his life for his conviction that the Word of God must go forth and must be made available in the common tongue. Moynahan's biography is an excellent introduction to Tyndale's life and influence. It is written in a way that will appeal to any reader, it still conveys a great deal of information and is clearly the result of meticulous research. It is one of the best biographies I have read this year and I commend it to you.

Moynahan Sells Me on Tyndale
By Readalots
Few history books have influenced my thinking as has Brian Moynahan's "God's Bestseller: William Tyndale" (2002). I found this 422-page (hardback) difficult to put down. I was often cheering for and, in the end, crying over the life of William Tyndale.

Moynahan portrays Tyndale as a man of rare talent and extraordinary vision. Almost from the beginning of his clerical career he wanted to offer the Bible to the English-speaking world. One feels Tyndale's early clandestine efforts for bringing Scripture into English. One is fearful as the Gloucestershire clerk quickly leaves for the continent evading royal arrest to begin his life-long passion.

Moynahan's narrative correctly shows Thomas More' villainous pursuit of Tyndale. As Henry VIII's Chancellor More had all the power, money and legal statute needed to track Tyndale down and ultimately execute him. Tyndale's short life was lived as a fugitive from royal pursuit. He was constantly on the move (Tyndale had few friends and no family by the end). Moynahan's is an exciitng and illuminating heart-in-the-throat narrative. He reveals all the nasty 16th century politics of Henry's torturous and corrupt reign.

Even as Moynahan show's William Tyndale's life as the stuff for an exciting Hollywood drama, he also takes time to explain Tyndale's evasive personal life. We learn that Tyndale may have met Martin Luther and learned German at the Protestant master's feet. We see Tyndale's various correspondences with many of the leaders of his age (the letters are still extant). We learn that Tyndale's translations were often completed in the middle of the night just hours before he was forced to flee the king's men.

We discover Thomas More's personal obsession with Tyndale (a compulsion that ultimately brought Tyndale to the fiery stake). In the end William Tyndale was captured through the duplicity of a "friend" and burned alive in Brussels (in 1526) because he was the first to translate (and publish) Scripture into English. (Ironically, Thomas More- staunch Roman Catholic- met his downfall at the hands of Thomas Cromwell- Protestant- weeks before Tyndale's capture. Cromwell's meteoric rise to power, as Henry's new Chancellor, did not allow time for Cromwell to block Emperor Charles V's- a royal Roman Catholic- execution of Tyndale.)

Moynahan offers a considerable portion of Tyndale's original translation (only three original copies survive). He reports that 84% of the King James Version New Testament and 78% of the KJV Old Testament are lifted from Tyndale's translation. (The 1611 KJV composers used Tyndale as their guide for English Scripture.)

This is a fast paced story of intrigue, arrest evasion, governmental corruption, betrayal, and divine inspiration. Through all the political turmoil in the first third of the 16th century, William Tyndale prepared a brilliant translation of God's Word for his fellow Englishmen. His was the original pioneering effort that made the Bible accessible to all English speakers.

This book in very recommendable to all: scholars, students, historians, theologians, Bible studiers, and those looking to read an exciting (real life) story. Moynahan will sell you, too, on William Tyndale.

The Men We Became: My Friendship with John F. Kennedy, Jr., by Robert T. Littell

For over twenty years Robert Littell was John F. Kennedy Jr.'s closest confidant. Now, in a beautiful and moving memoir, Littell introduces us to the private John. A story of laughter and sorrow, joy and heartbreak, The Men We Became is an unforgettable memoir.

Rob Littell was a freshman at Brown when he met the young JFK, Jr. during orientation week. Although Littell came from a privileged background, it was worlds apart from the glamorous life of the son of the late President and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Eager to be accepted on his own terms, Kennedy admired Littell's irreverence toward his celebrity and they became close friends.

John opened up to Littell on a very personal level, revealing the complex and sometimes tense nature of his relationships with his sister and cousins, as well as his mother's extraordinary influence on John - and how they both worked to keep it from being overbearing. John's marriage had its ups and downs and Carolyn had made enemies of some of his friends, but she was in great shape mentally and physically and they were planning to have children.

Littell recounts wonderful dinners at Jacqueline Onassis's apartment where she surprised him with his favorite dinner of specially burned hamburgers and weekends at her retreat in Martha's Vineyard where she critiqued their touch football while lying on a chaise lounge, her face covered in cold cream and cucumber slices. As students, Littell and Kennedy bummed around Europe. They slept in Hyde Park, sampled the pleasures of Amsterdam, ran afoul of customs officers and almost got busted at the Ritz Hotel for smoking pot. They even shared apartments in New York City until Jackie summoned them to dinner one day and gently suggested it was time to grow up. The two went on to pursue their professional lives. John trained as a lawyer - and Littell speaks of his friend's anguish at repeatedly failing the bar - and then he founded his own political magazine, which seemed only fitting because Kennedy yearned to live up to the family name and accepted that politics would be his destiny. Later on, Littell was a part of JFK, Jr.'s secret wedding to Carolyn Bessette on Cumberland Island, Georgia, and three years later a pallbearer at his funeral.

From shared adventures, private moments and lasting memories, Robert Littell offers a unique look at John F. Kennedy Jr.'s life - one that has never been seen before.

From Publishers Weekly
Of all of the banter recounted in this extended eulogy to his late friend, the most germane conversation comes when the author recalls his friend John F. Kennedy Jr. reading Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye, Ken O'Donnell and Mike Powers's memoir of the late president John F. Kennedy. The author writes, "[John] even suggested that I'd be writing about him one day." That quote almost serves as an ethical balm for the reader concerned that JFK Jr.'s life has been written about and exploited by so many. Though far from an autobiographical masterpiece, this book offers Kennedy voyeurs an exciting dose of nostalgia. Littell's account is adoring but not hagiographic. While most of the anecdotes involve the mundane stuff of male friendship, Littell acknowledges certain not-so-shocking facts distorted in the tabloids, such as John's seeking therapy after failing the bar exam for the second time, his occasional use of marijuana, his vanity and his marital difficulties. Littell's narrative is also a commentary on fame—and how fame affects all who are touched by it. Littell claims that John trusted him not because Littell worshiped his celebrity, but because he didn't: they became "closer each time [Robert] pushed [John's] public self away." In one telling episode, Littell plops himself down beside Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis after making a joke about John and his friends, and she gaily chides him, "I so love your irreverence." That irreverence is on full display in this sweet, heartfelt panegyric, which will undoubtedly be snapped up by readers of Laurence Leamer's Sons of Camelot. 35 b&w photos not seen by PW.

A Splendid Knockabout Story You Can't Put Down
By Sterling Price
Rob Littell's book is a splendid, knockabout story about an extraordinary friendship cut short by tragedy. It's a matter-of-fact telling of two college freshmen who formed a brotherly bond that transcended celebrity and breathtaking privilege. For those of us who never had the opportunity to meet John F. Kennedy, Jr., it gives a rare glimpse of the man - or, rather, the gentleman - behind the headlines. After getting to know these two young men and the nature of their relationship, one comes away with the feeling that JFK, Jr., almost helped write the chapters - almost a dictation from heaven. "Hey, Littell, you missed one!" (You have to read the book to fully appreciate this line.) We get to meet Mrs. Onassis, too, away from the flashing light bulbs and glamorous "sets"; and - surprise! - she's just like any other proud, protective parent. One gains an appreciation for how well she balanced her different roles and how close to the earth she truly was. What harm there is in any of these pages, only a green-eyed skeptic knows. For the rest of us, The Men We Became is what a best friend writes to vanquish the sorrow of what never will be. This is a charmer - from the first page to the last.

hilarious!

I read The Men We Became in two nights. What fun! And I must thank Rob Littell for defending his freind. It must have been hard to watch his reputation get dragged thorugh the mud for so long. Most of America loved John Jr., and I now feel that he loved us back. I laughed out loud and cried and felt like I knew the man I had always admired. I figured this book to be another tell all, but to my happy surprise it's not. It's a great story about a favorite American Son. One that I'm sure Carolyn Bessette's mother must be grateful for the effort.

A wonderful memoir of male bonding
By A Customer
I'm not exactly sure what the negative reviewers here are so bitter about compared to the really awful memoirs by people that barely knew John.
Above all else, this is a testament to a loving friendship. As a man the same age as these two friends I could completely relate to the overriding theme of Rob's writing. Friendship and a very close one at that. Which other family would consistently serve burned hamburgers (Rob's favorite) to a grown man because he's a picky eater?
Aside from tasteful and measured insights into the Kennedy family's homes and personal tastes and marriages, one is left
saddened by Rob's loss. The book is summed up in the line offered by Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg after John's memorial service when Rob tells her how much John loved her, to which she replied "Thank you Rob. John loved you too."
Rob, you could not have written this book as easily as writing it. Thanks from "a guy" for writing it.
