One night in 1892, Old Red becomes smitten with Sherlock Holmes on hearing his brother read "The Red-Headed League" around the campfire during a cattle drive. Determined to follow in his hero's footsteps, Old Red gets the chance to apply the master's methods after some unsavory characters hire the pair to work at a ranch, whose general manager is soon found dead after a stampede. Another man turns up dead, apparently a suicide, just before the British aristocrats who own the ranch arrive to inspect their property. The melding of genres will remind some of the late Bill DeAndrea's western Nero Wolfe pastiches, while the skillful plotting and characterization augur well for the sequel. Hockensmith writes a monthly column for Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

One of the hands at the ranch is found with a bullet in his brain and another ends up seemingly trampled, but no one can recall a stampede. The shadowy miscreants had best watch their backs, however, as the Amlingmeyers are not your ordinary cowpokes. Old Red can't read but has been entertained trailside by Big Red's reading Sherlock Holmes stories from Harper's Weekly. Old Red thus considers himself a budding master of what he calls "deducifyin'." With Old Red as a six-gun Holmes and Big Red as a skeptical, nervous Watson, the pair ferrets out the killers and motives from a colorful cast of characters with names such as Puddin-Foot, Tall John, and Swivel-Eye. The Amlingmeyers have graced the pages of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, and their initial book-length case is every bit as memorable. At times, they may remind readers of Joe Lansdale's Hap Collins and Leonard Pine with their smart mouths, penchant for trouble, and unflagging loyalty to each other. This is a great reworking of the Holmes conceit, and one suspects Hockensmith will have a steady readership as long as the Amlingmeyers are on the case. Wes Lukowsky

Just Plain Fun

This book makes the reader smile on every page. It is not laugh out loud funny, but consistently amusing throughout. The narrator, one of the two brothers who are at the center of the yarn, is a comedian - if he does say so himself.

The Amlinger brothers, Big Red (narrator) and Old Red, are cowboys. Big Red has read Sherlock Holmes stories to his older brother who can not read and Old Red has taken them to heart. The brothers go to work on a ranch known for its nefarious bosses. A body is found. Apparently, the man was killed in a stampede. Old Red doubts it and the Holmesian hunt is on...Old Red goes deducifyin'.

This is a true mix of a western and a Sherlock Holmes type Mystery. Mr. Hockensmith catches the flavor of both tremendously with just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek attitude so the depiction of neither genre is "over the top". There are more amusing, and apt, metaphors in this book than any other I have ever read. They were amusing to read and I found myself looking forward to the next one, which was never a long wait.

The characters, especially the brothers are very good. The supporting cast varies from drovers to evil foremen to an English duke, who, of course has met Holmes and hates him, and a damsel.

Lastly, the plot was a good one. Like Holmes, Old Red is always a step ahead of his brother/Watson and the reader. He, of course, wraps it all up in the end.

There are a number of Holmes knock-offs and books about Holmes after retirement, etc. out there. This is not one. Holmes is merely Old Red's hero. Mr. Hockensmith then concocts a Holmes-like mystery told in a western twang. Holmes fans will not be offended since he is only an inspiration to this amateur sleuth.

Highly recommended. This is a decent mystery that light-heartedly combines the features of Sherlock Holmes and dime westerns.

Fantastically Fun! I'm Ready to Saddle Up With Otto!

I thought the whole title and premise was very clever, and I love Holmes so I picked it up and found an author after my own heart. This is one heck of a book, incredibly fun and witty and written in cowboy-speak so well you will be conversin' with cattlehands in no time. The story keeps you riveted and the writing keeps you entralled. Did I mention this was incredibly fun? I hear there is some dispute as to why Steve's name is on the book instead of Otto's. I reckon there will be a thrashin' a' comin'. Buy it, and devour it. You will thank me.

But in the case of French, as Canadian authors Nadeau and Barlow (Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong) exhaustively illustrate, this notion shouldn't be taken for granted, since an insistence on linguistic purity influences how French is taught, spoken and written. What began as a loose confederation of local dialects became mired in a particularly French obsession with linguistic propriety. Despite the natural development of French over time, "[in] the back of any francophone's mind is the idea that an ideal, pure French exists somewhere." Nadeau and Barlow traveled the world to research what they call "the mental universe of French speakers" from its center in France to such places as Canada, Senegal and Israel. "French carries with it a vision of the State and of political values, a particular set of cultural standards," the authors write. They have managed to corral what could be an ungainly subject—both the history and the present day—in a clearly written, well-organized approach to the lingua franca of millions of people. Readers may be confused by the title of this book by paleontologist Dingus (The Mistaken Extinction), which doesn't do justice to his story: an occasionally lyrical and meditative history of Montana's Badlands, a desolate region that he has clearly come to love during his paleontological expeditions. The rugged Badlands of east-central Montana stretch for more than 100 miles along the south bank of the Missouri River. The area hasn't always been a giant's playground of buttes and coulees and inhospitable ravines. Seventy million years ago T. rex chased its prey through a luxuriant floodplain that covered the area. The first skeletal T. rex remains were discovered here, and the most complete specimen before the $7 million Sue was found on a local ranch by an amateur bone hunter in the 1960s. Meriwether Clark became the first fossil hunter of the American West when he picked up a dinosaur bone a little farther upriver on the Corps of Discovery's journey to the Pacific. The residents of the Badlands town of Jordan have seen their share of excitement more recently: in 1996 right-wing extremists called the Freemen engaged the FBI in a standoff that attracted national media attention. History of a town in Montana

A third of the book is about dinosaur hunting in the Hell Creek area of Mt; the rest is a paleontologist's take on Lewis & Clark, Custer's last stand, the Montana Freemen, and the future of the area. The most interesting parts were the chapters about Harley Garbani, a fossil-hunter who dug up multiple T. rex's in the area and a personal friend of the author, and the K-T extinction controversy, in which Dingus participated. Dingus clearly loves the area, but if your interest is the dinosaurs of Montana, this book is probably not for you. Also, Dingus has covered the K-T extinction in a separate book.

Not helping is that the language is unnecessarily complex. The text is studded with five dollar words, and I don't mean technical ones. Actually, more technical terms would have been welcome.

Good history (geological and human) of the area. An easy, non-scientific read for anyone who wants to know more about where some of the greatest dinosaur finds have been made.

Tale of a place with a lot of history

I bought this book because I am a distant relative of Harley Garbani; My Italian-Swiss immigrant grandfather had a dry-land ranch in the San Jacinto Valley. Over the years, I had seen Harley's name on exhibits at the LA County Museum and heard proud, family stories of his collecting in the deserts of California and Baja California. At the time of his death, I also noticed his obituary appeared in newspapers around the world. I, therefore, wanted to know about him. When I learned of this book, I ordered it. (On the other side of my family, my anscestors arrived in Montana in the 1850s.)

It is amazing how much occured in this isolated area over time. I found the book an entertaining, quick read.

(There is also a film, "The Missouri Breaks," a 1976 American western starring Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson set in this area that a critical and commercial failure.)

Disappointing

Far from being the promised "pee your pants laugh fest", Teen Angst is an utterly generic - and bland - collection. Although one of two of the poems evoked a grin, for the most part, these are thoroughly unremarkable, and a far cry from being "so bad they're good". I found the blurbs leading into each of the entries much more interesting than the actual poems, establishing the context in which each was written, but still felt as though something was missing. Great idea, but strangely unfunny.

A Not-So-Funny Attempt

I was actually looking forward to getting Teen Angst in the mail, but after reading through it, I was disappointed. I found only a few poems to be even remotely funny: 4 exactly. The rest were just really bad poems. The introductions to the poems were often humorous, but the individual poems consist of hardly any humor. I felt as though I was grading an 8th grade English class' poetry assignments. Of course, that's what some of these poems are...Certainly NOT the pee-in-your-pants laughing I was promised.

Terribly Funny

The first and definitive work of its kind, this anthology contains poems written in the heat of intense adolescent emotional distress and introduced by the now angst-free adults who wrote the poems. Although these authors lack the literary pretentiousness enjoyed by true poetasters, their work is equally terrible. Arrangement is by such adolescent-appropriate topics as Breakups--I Will Never Love Again Poems and I Am Alone--and No One Understand My Pain Poems, etc.

One of the best parts of this truly comical collection is editor Sara Bynoe's eight step plan for teens interested in writing angst poetry. Bynoe's anthology was inspired by content from her website.

Even Lizzie sometimes wonders about the just friends relationship she has with pal Gordo. "Why do I feel all flushed and light-headed?" she wonders, in one TV episode when Kate tells her that Gordo has a crush on her. In another episode, Lizzie tries to change herself to become someone Ethan likes as more than "just a friend." In the end, Lizzie learns that her true pals--no matter what their sex--are the people who trust and care for her.Michael, 9Sometimes all the characters in the TV show are enemies. Once they had a race and at the end, near the finish line, Lizzie said sorry first to everyone, then they all said sorry back and they all crossed the finish line together. I liked it because they didn't have their usual friends as partners--Gordo was with Kate, Miranda was with Larry, and Lizzie was with Ethan. It taught me to say sorry first when you get in a fight. If it doesn't work, just walk away.Kameron, 11I think Kate (deep, deep down) is a nice person, but she's afraid to show it.I learned from the movie that a real friend will sacrifice just about anything.As a boy, I know what it's like to have friends who are girls because most of my friends are girls. It's the same as having a friend who's a boy.Mary, 10If you like someone and you ignore your friend, they get their feelings hurt. You can trust someone who's never told one of your secrets. In one TV episode, Lizzie becomes friends with the rebellious, "tormenter extraordinaire" Angel and ditches her old pals Gordo andMiranda in exchange for an exciting new friendship and style that includes tattoos, nose rings, and a defiant attitude. When she takes it too far, Gordo and Miranda finally pull her aside and tell Lizzie she needs to stop--that she shouldn't act like someone she's not. Luckily for Lizzie, she listens to her old friends. Sometimes your old friends can help you remember who you really are.Elise, 12Sticking together (like Lizzie and her friends do) is very important because you'll have your friends no matter what, even if you're mad at them.Laura, 10You can trust people as friends if they don't speak badly about anyone.Ashley, 11Lizzie and Kate are such different people, so I was surprised when they became better friends.Courtney, 12It is good to make lots of new friends, but it is great to have a couple of good friends that you can really trust.

Everyone who watches Lizzie on TV probably wishes they had a couple of good pals like Gordo and Miranda. They're trustworthy, caring, supportive, and--for the most part--consistent, unlike Kate, who shows friendship for fleeting moments, then quickly snapsback to her snobbish, sarcastic self. After a short-lived sweetness and appreciation for something Lizzie does to help her, for example, Kate is quick to quip, "Glad that's behind us!" and then returns with a flip of the hair to her original, conceited state.Paulina, 11I knew Kate and Lizzie would be friends again because they were very good friends when they were little, and once you have a good friend, you never lose them.Sy, 12You can trust a person if they don't make fun of you.Maybe I would like to have Lizzie as a friend. As a boy, you're just friends with girls and not really, really good friends.

"I guess I'm just the guy you say 'Hi' to in the hallway--not the guy you should go out with," laments Gordo in one TV episode. Trying to distinguish between just friends and more than friends can indeed be tricky!Sarah, 11You can keep old friends and make new ones. You can trust people who care about you. You keep your old friends by not ignoring them when you find new ones. Try writing your feelings down in a private journal instead. Remember to tell your friends what you like about them: the way they laugh, their engaging smile, or what have you. A happy friend is a good friend indeed! In one TV episode, Lizzie tells Gordo he's "smart, funny, and a little weird sometimes, but I wouldn't like you any other way." Now those are some good pal qualities! Just because your friend isn't rich, beautiful, or exotic doesn't mean she's not precious. True beauty is more than skin-deep! Remember that many of your friends can, and probably will, change. Just because someone was your best bud in grade school doesn't mean you will remain close to him or her in middle school or even high school. This is natural and shouldn't be something you need to dwell on. Look for friends who make you feel good now, and treasure each other's company and trust. If you and your closest buddies aren't speaking to each other because of a communications breakdown or otherwise hurt feelings, try being the first to talk. a bit Boring!

I bought this book thinking it'll have lots of cool information about one of my previous favorite shows but when I read it, I saw that most of the stuff inside was what other people think about Lizzie McGuire and it had that same old advice on popularity, friends, family and bullying. So as you could guess it was really boring and I never even finished it! If you need some advice try some other better book. I still rated this book 2 stars though because some people might find the information in it interesting...

Even Dads can read this.

As the stereotypical divorced dad with two daughters I found the book is a handy resource for starting or continuing conversations with your "tweens" about issues (school, friends, fashion, pop culture)familiar to them. Obviously the books value is enhanced if your child (and you!) have seen the Lizzie McGuire show.

I'm looking forward to Ms. Sublette's next book.

Here's Lookin' at Lizzie

I don't know if I even still have this book, but I remember that it wasn't very good, in my opinion. The advice is sort of boring if I remember right, and the only good parts are a few of the other things.

I'm writing this review, however, because one girl said she was 12 and the popular girls at her school weighed less than 80 pounds or something like that. Actually, I think most girls that age weigh about 100 pounds, except really thin girls that age weigh about 90 pounds. So if a girl that didn't know that read this book and wanted to be popular (and all girls do don't they?) they might actually try to lose that much weight. Also one girl said that if you're popular you have to shop at Limited Too. She said it like there's something wrong with shopping at Limited Too. Actually that's mostly just a stereotype about popular girls shopping at Limited Too. At my school the popular girls SOMETIMES wear plain clothes that say Limited Too but they mostly wear t-shirts and blue jeans and put their hair in ponytails. I shop at Limited Too sometimes and I'm not popular. Actually, if girls try to wear "cool" clothes and shop at Limited Too all the time that can backfire and the other girls think they're rich and hate them because of that. I know because that happened to me. One day a popular girl just started ruining my life and I thought there was no reason and finally I think I've figured it out.

So this book isn't really good for girls that age AND a lot of it doesn't really have anything to do with Lizzie McGuire. Besides, aren't most fans of Lizzie McGuire like 10 years old now? A lot of girls in my school liked Lizzie McGuire when we were in 3rd or 4th grade but then in 5th grade everyone stopped talking about it and reading books and stuff. I mean, some girls probably like Lizzie McGuire when they're older but my friends and I watch Japanese anime now mostly. Besides, when you're ten you don't need to be thinking about clothes and boys this much yet, and ten year olds are probably more likely to think they need to weigh less than eighty pounds in middle school to be cool. And most older kids would probably find it boring and already know all the advice, so it's really kind of useless, especially the glossary of things teenagers say if teenagers are reading it don't they already know what all that means?

Oops! I didn't mean to make my review so long but anyway I don't recommend this. Besides, at the back it says that no one working on Lizzie McGuire had anything to do with this or something like that. I'm not sure if that means they didn't have permission to write about Lizzie McGuire or something but if that's what they mean then isn't that like illegal?

Still Waiting for the Last Word from Bobby Himself

Golenbock can be credited for researching and releasing a book no one else has done; for that we should be thankful. Is the book anywhere close to the "last word" on Bobby Allison?..not by a long shot. I admire Bobby to no end; just a super, decent guy and one of the best American drivers ever, regardless of type of car. But..here's wishing that somehow Bobby and the Allison clan / Alabama gang will pen the perfect memoir. There are obviously holes in the information that might be shared due to Bobby's horrendous accident that abruptly ended his career, but that must be expected. One thing's for certain, Bobby Allison was as fine a racer as you could find. I'd love to see him do a similar book to his brother Donnie's, one of the best memoirs from a driver I've ever read. Other reviews of Golenbock's book take issue with statements of fact. I hope authors learn from the critique; factual errors easily checked just can't happen, nor should they get by a good publisher / editor. A heartfelt attaboy to Bobby Allison for being selected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame!

Great Story Riddled by Errors

I have been a Bobby Allison fan for more than 50 years as I saw him race in his very early years in South Florida, so I was very much looking forward to this book. Sadly the errors that are rampant throughout the book ruined the story. Other reviews here have noted some errors, but the number is truly staggering--and utterly inexplicable in this age of Google and instant info. Here are the errors I found:
Page 30:
Gil Hearn
Correct spelling is Hearne

Page 34:
He started thirty-ninth, and he finished thirty-ninth, still running at the end of the race.
He started thirty-first and finished thirty-sixth.

Page 40:
Deal Ford
Correct spelling is Deel Ford.

Page 66:
(James Hylton) led the 300-lap Islip race from lap 147 to lap 282.
Hylon led from 147 through 292.

Page 68:
a lap after Bobby passed Buddy Baker to take the lead in the race it blew up.
Allison never led a lap in the race--and neither did Buddy Baker.

Page 100:
Donnie entered two superspeedway races, finishing twenty-seventh at Rockingham and ninth, twenty-two laps behind winner Fred Lorenzen, at Charlotte.
Exactly the opposite, Donnie was ninth at Rockingham, twenty-seventh at Charlotte.

Page 102:
What made winning the World 600 even more remarkable was that he also entered the Indianapolis 500 the same weekend. (Donnie was the only driver ever to do that until 1993, when Jeff Gordon did it.)

What made the June 20 1971 Riverside race notable was that Bobby had arranged with Motorola to put a two-way radio in the car so that during the race he could talk directly with Eddie. It was the first time a driver didn't have to rely on a chalkboard, and it wasn't long before all the drivers were doing it.
Though Allison popularized the two-way radio, it was first used in 1952 by Al Stevens in a Modified/Sportsman race on the famed beach/road course.
