Skylark: The Life and Times of Johnny Mercer, by Philip Furia

Skylark is the story of the tormented but glorious life and career of Johnny Mercer, and the first biography of this enormously popular and influential lyricist. Raised in Savannah, Mercer brought a quintessentially southern style to both his life in New York and to his lyrics, which often evoked the landscapes and mood of his youth ("Moon River", "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening"). Mercer also absorbed the music of southern blacks--the lullabies his nurse sang to him as a baby and the spirituals that poured out of Savannah's churches-and that cool smooth lyrical style informed some of his greatest songs, such as "That Old Black Magic".

Part of a golden guild whose members included Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, Mercer took Hollywood by storm in the midst of the Great Depression. Putting words to some of the most famous tunes of the time, he wrote one hit after another, from "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" to "Jeepers Creepers" and "Hooray for Hollywood." But it was also in Hollywood that Mercer's dark underside emerged. Sober, he was a kind, generous and at times even noble southern gentleman; when he drank, Mercer tore into friends and strangers alike with vicious abuse. Mercer's wife Ginger, whom he'd bested Bing Crosby to win, suffered the cruelest attacks; Mercer would even improvise cutting lyrics about her at parties.

During World War II, Mercer served as Americas's troubadour, turning out such uplifting songs as "My Shining Hour" and "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive." He also helped create Capitol Records, the first major West Coast recording company, where he discovered many talented singers, including Peggy Lee and Nat King Cole. During this period, he also began an intense affair with Judy Garland, which rekindled time and again for the rest of their lives. Although they never found happiness together, Garland became Mercer's muse and inspired some of his most sensuous and heartbreaking lyrics: "Blues in the Night," "One for My Baby," and "Come Rain or Come Shine."

Mercer amassed a catalog of over a thousand songs and during some years had a song in the Top Ten every week of the year--the songwriting equivalent of Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak--but was plagued by a sense of failure and bitterness over the big Broadway hit that seemed forever out of reach.

Based on scores of interviews with friends, family and colleagues, and drawing extensively on Johnny Mercer's letters, papers and his unpublished autobiography, Skylark is an important book about one of the great and dramatic characters in 20th century popular music.

From Publishers Weekly
In this sensitive and wonderfully in-depth work on the lyricist of classics like "One for the Road" and "Moon River," Furia (Ira Gershwin: The Art of the Lyricist) displays his talent for writing about the giants in American popular song. Georgia-born Mercer (1909-1976) spent most of his life among New York songwriters such as Irving Berlin and Cole Porter as well as such Hollywood stars as Bing Crosby and Judy Garland, but Furia expertly details how "his genteel southern background would always set him apart" in his lyrics ("Mercer, alone among the great songwriters of his generation, was, from the day he was born, influenced by the music of blacks") as well as his personal life, including his alcoholism. Furia also captures all of the successes and failures in Mercer's long career: his many Academy Award wins; his creation of Capitol Records; his collaboration with composer Harold Arlen, which helped both of them create songs and lyrics "that endure as timeless standards"; and his never having a true hit Broadway play because his "concentration on the emotional mood of a melody limited him" after the American musical's post-Oklahoma! emphasis on character and theatricality. Furia also details the influence of Mercer's love affair with Judy Garland on "the new depth of sorrow" that suddenly appears in Mercer's work with Arlen. Apart from including a few out-of-tune facts about Garland's sexual habits not related to Mercer, Furia makes it clear that Garland had become Mercer's "muse."

My best friend's dad produced Frank Sinatra and Nat king Cole at capitol records in the 1950s. Johnny Mercer started capitol records. I also love the songs he wrote.

Creative Genius + Linguist
By Michele Ankduda
A refreshingly well written book on an American icon. This biography is a pleasure to read about someone who has given the world musical pleasure. The author, Philip Furia brings the complex, nuanced personality of Johnny Mercer to life, less the People magazine type of Journalism. He also anylyzes the linguistic structure of Mercer's lyrics and why they are so successful - whether he was composing in English or translating popular hits from French or German.

Johnny Mercer, whose Centennial of birth occurs this year, drew heavily on his Savannah, Georgia upbringing for his long, fruitful career as a singer, songwriter and especially lyricist. In all, he composed lyrics to over 1,000 songs with a Who's Who of musical collaborators.

The book is not only about Johnny Mercer's life and work, but also about the history + evolution of Popular Music in the 20th Century. There is so much to read, learn and enjoy about this complex man, who encouraged and inspired so many. A 5 star biography.

Overdue recognition for a genius of song
By John M. Thomas
A true example of why they don't write 'em like they used to, Johnny Mercer has written some of the catchiest, longest remembered and honored songs of the 20th century, many of which the average listener has little clue as to who put the words to the tunes that remain timeless in their appeal. As a collaborator with some of the finest tunesmiths ever (Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael to name two) Mercer could dance with words as effortlessly and as beautifully as a prima ballerina while maintaining a roots, folksy manner both charming and disarming in its playfulness.
Philip Furia's biography is well recearched and referenced, using the recollections of friends, family, and cohorts, and finds a treasure trove in Mercer's own unreleased autobiography. Mercer's bouts with feelings of unworthiness as a composer were unexplained periods of doubt in a career that spanned the thirties through the sixties. While not the financial or acclaimed success of friend and rival Bing Crosby, Mercer became a standard for composition that has yet to be matched even by modern contemporaries like McCartney (who, the book indicates, explored a partnership in Mercer's latter years).
This book explores as best it can the song writing magic of Mercer, although the explanations of his seemingly effortless method of composition appears (as the author indicates) a tad glib and self-effacing. Were they available, additional tales of his creative inspirations would have been appreciated; any man who comes up with a couplet like "If for the stork you pine, consider the porcupine" deserves to be studied if only for the glee apparent in coming up with such delicious bits of rhyme and rhythm, certainly at a level equal or surpassing today's best.
Mercer's life was also painted in broad strokes of unhappiness, and the contrast between the joyous singer of "Zip-a dee-doo-dah" with the alcoholic and unsatisfied husband provides a remarkable set of circumstances.
This book was an enjoyable read in exploring the life and career of Johnny Mercer. Like the subject of these pages, I think I could have easily been fascinated with the book had it been twice as long, as this southern gentleman's tales and stories, against the background of his life and times, would have been captivating reading for any fan of the genre of the popular song and of show business personalities (and Johnny certainly had personality to spare). I would recommend this book along with an accompanying copy of "Capitol Collector Series - Johnny Mercer" or any good compilation of his songs. Be they his renditions or the more popular cover versions, Johnny Mercer is timeless, priceless, and almost "Too Marvelous for Words". Thank you Philip Furia.

Content Good but book damaged
By Amazon Customer
I ordered this for a class I am teaching for Middle Schoolers about all of the J.K. Rowlings books. It would have made a nice addition to the course but it arrived damaged. The cover had seperated from the pages. I was very disapointed that my only choice was to get a refund. I would have liked to get another copy of the book but that option was blocked out on the web site. As a result I had to change my lesson plans and the kids missed out on a great lesson about mapping and literature. I've never had a problem with ordering anything from Amazon before, so this turned out to be an unwanted surprise.

the only good part of this book is the map but even that isn't useful. i strongly suggest you don't waste your money or time on this one. You'd get the same and actually more extensive information from almost any of the other books. One of the best but even that is missing a few important things is.. Fact, Fiction, and Folklore in Harry Potter's World: An Unofficial Guide. If you want to read my review of that I'll be writing one as soon as I'm done with this.

On Call: A Doctor's Days and Nights in Residency, by Emily R. Transue

On Call begins with a newly-minted doctor checking in for her first day of residency--wearing the long white coat of an MD and being called "Doctor" for the first time. Having studied at Yale and Dartmouth, Dr. Emily Transue arrives in Seattle to start her internship in Internal Medicine just after graduating from medical school. This series of loosely interconnected scenes from the author's medical training concludes her residency three years later.

During her first week as a student on the medical wards, Dr. Transue watched someone come into the emergency room in cardiac arrest and die. Nothing like this had ever happened to her before-it was a long way from books and labs. So she began to record her experiences as she gained confidence putting her book knowledge to work.

The stories focus on the patients Dr. Transue encountered in the hospital, ER and clinic; some are funny and others tragic. They range in scope from brief interactions in the clinic to prolonged relationships during hospitalization. There is a man newly diagnosed with lung cancer who is lyrical about his life on a sunny island far away, and a woman, just released from a breathing machine after nearly dying, who sits up and demands a cup of coffee.

Though the book has a great deal of medical content, the focus is more on the stories of the patients' lives and illnesses and the relationships that developed between the patients and the author, and the way both parties grew in the course of these experiences.

Along the way, the book describes the life of a resident physician and reflects on the way the medical system treats both its patients and doctors. On Call provides a window into the experience of patients at critical junctures in life and into the author's own experience as a new member of the medical profession.

From Publishers Weekly
During her three years as a resident in internal medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, Transue wrote about her patients as a way to guard against burnout and share her experiences with friends and family. This moving collection of her stories conveys vividly, sometimes painfully, the atmosphere of overwork, exhaustion and insecurity in which a resident works; the long shifts and sleepless nights, the moments when she cannot contain her tears, the times when she is haunted by fears that she has made the wrong decision. But she never loses sympathy for her patients—the heart attack victim who regrets not remembering his near-death experience, the old woman who has a pet name for her walker, the psychotic who imagines he is in constant pain and just wants her to hold his hand, even the grumpy man with emphysema who smokes two packs a day and complains about the treatment he has to receive as a result, and the habitual drunks lined up every night on stretchers in a back hallway. It's reassuring to read that a doctor isn't afraid to express compassion for her patients and that she is eager to listen and learn as they talk about their hopes and fears. There are many touching moments here, especially when she's reminded by a patient who is dying that it's important to look out the window and enjoy the view on a sunny day. Her descriptions of medical procedures can be graphic, but she presents an intriguing picture of a side of medicine many people never see.

From Booklist
How does one progress from humble med student to self-assured physician? It isn't easy, and while Hollywood may be able to spin humor from the idea of medical residency, the reality is drastically different. As internist Transue learned on her very first day, despite a doctor's best efforts, people die. Being expected to simply hold the hand of someone saying a final good-bye to a son or mother can be traumatic for a recent graduate hell-bent on saving lives. Likewise, keeping a straight face while viewing a hilarious tattoo can present its own challenge. Transue found a way to put her residency experiences into perspective while protecting her sanity: she kept a journal. She jotted down thoughts, impressions, and entire conversations to help make sense of a stressful, often chaotic job. The result is something to share: an often heartbreaking, sometimes humorous account of a student wending her way through a labyrinth of medical hurdles to become a caring, compassionate healer. Review

“With humor, humility, and a gentle wit, Transue leads us into the bizarre, bone-rattling world of medical training. Through her eyes, and her honest, engaging prose, we have a rare opportunity to experience the growth of a true healer. While readers may be lucky to have Transue as their guide, her patients are even luckier.” ―Danielle Ofri M.D., Ph.D, author of Singular Intimacies: Becoming a Doctor at Bellevue and This Side of Doctoring

“Everyone who sees a doctor needs to read this book. Dr. Transue, through her stories, gives a realistic understanding of the pressures, perseverance and strength required for students of medicine to succeed as practitioners.” ―Dr. Lewis G. Maharam, medical director for the New York City Marathon

Reading this book will give you a renewed appreciation of life.
By Richard E Johnson Jr
I bought this book because I was curious what doctors feel when confronted with difficult if not impossible situations. The book provided me with what I was looking for. But to my surprise it provided me with a renewed appreciation of life as I came to realize that we all have to come to terms with life and death and in that respect we have much in common with our doctors.

I WANT HER AS MY DOCTOR!
By Scott Marquiss
This is a terrific read. I've always wondered what a doctor is thinking and/or dealing with when we are in front of them. With this collection of patients of her's we get to see how she grows into a more confident MD. This collection of events were many years ago, maybe she'll do as equal about her practice today!

Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller, by Marshall Chapman

Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller was a 2004 SEBA Book Award finalist, and a 2004 Book Critics Circle Award finalist.

Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller is an inventive and original book from Nashville singer/songwriter Chapman, who uses twelve of her most resonant songs as entry points to many of her life's adventures. Not a memoir, but a map of the places Chapman's been and what went through her mind as she was traveling there, this book is funny and tender, warm and exuberant.

Raised a debutante in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the daughter of a mill owner and firmly part of proper society, Chapman became a rocker at a time when women weren't yet picking up electric guitars. She is "a living example," as one reviewer wrote, "of the triumph of rock and roll over good breeding."

From New Year's Eve in 1978 when Jerry Lee Lewis gave Chapman advice on how to live life ("I mean it's one thing when your mother says 'Honey don't you think you'd better slow down?' But when The Killer voices his concern....") to the time her black maid Cora Jeter took the seven-year-old to see Elvis, Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller goes to the moments when the influences on Chapman's songwriting and psyche were cemented. And it winningly reveals how the creative process comes from life: one of Chapman's favorite songs was written after waking up facedown in her underpants in her front-yard vegetable garden.

Revealing intimate rock and roll moments and memories of a South Carolina childhood, Marshall Chapman is a fresh voice firmly in the Southern tradition.

Marshall Rocks - I Couldn't Put It Down!
By A Customer
There are not many people who can write about the creative process, music, and coming of age as a woman in the South, but Marshall does it with wit and grace in a way that made me want to turn every page until I was through. Her perspective on songwriting, the music business and Nashville, from someone who was in the studio way back when with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings while in school at Vanderbilt and still making music after Waylon was gone is incredibly unique.
Run, don't walk, to your computer to order this book!

Better than the Book Jacket implies
By A Customer
Marshall Chapman has succeeded in writing a book that takes the reader along on the adventure of her life as a song writer and performer in Nashville and elsewhere. As you reach the end of each chapter you are compelled to sneak a peek at the next, and so you may stay up all night finishing the book. This book also offers a glimpse into the author's life from her birth into a well-to-do family to her successful career as a prolific writer of country and blues music. Humor and compassion are intimately blended. Highly recommended.

A Life In Songs
By Tony Hilfer
Marhall Chapman's account of her song by song journey to becoming one of the most innovative and thrilling country rock songwriter-singers is as funny and poignant a book as I've read in some time. From the trouble she got into in grade school for channeling Elvis in the hall to her defiance of Nashville songwriting formulae she kept raising the question, "Why Can't I Be Like Other Girls?" Thank the lord that was the only thing she couldn't do because she sure did everything else. Each chapter of this memoir tells the story of the experience underlying one of her songs so the songs record her life in more ways than one. And some life it is, sometimes on the edge, sometimes ecstatic (when these were not one and the same), never boring. A reader who does not live through it with Marshall is missing something about the South, something about country rock music and something about life.

Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank: And Other Words of Delicate Southern Wisdom, by Celia Rivenbark

Celia Rivenbark's essays about life in today's South are like caramel popcorn---sweet, salty, and utterly irresistible

Celia Rivenbark is a master at summing up the South in all its glorious excesses and contradictions. In this collection of screamingly funny essays, you'll discover:
* How to get your kid into a character breakfast at Disneyworld (or run the risk of eating chicken out of a bucket with Sneezy)
* Secrets of Celebrity Moms (don't hate them because they're beautiful when there are so many other reasons to hate them)
* EBay addiction and why "It ain't worth having if it ain't on eBay" (Whoa! Is that Willie Nelson's face in your grits?)
* Why today's children's clothes make six-year-olds look like Vegas showgirls with an abundance of anger issues
* And so much more!
Rivenbark is an intrepid explorer and acid commentator on the land south of the Mason-Dixon line.

From Publishers Weekly
In some 32 short essays on the ridiculousness of modern life, Rivenbark (Bless Your Heart, Tramp; We're Just Like You, Only Prettier) wanders through Tweenland at the mall, thinking a better name would be "Lil Skanks." She thinks that the Cruise/Holmes pregnancy has an "indescribably delicious" Rosemary's Baby feel to it and recalls that Monica Lewinsky hosted a TV dating show—in which she "didn't get the guy." Rivenbark riffs on America's crazier obsessions—the painful but obligatory pilgrimage to Disney World, the new attention to "buttocks cleavage," coffee makers calling themselves baristas, or those celebrity moms who have "bumps" instead of babies. Rivenbark describes herself as a "slacker mom" and reminds readers to learn something from men—"because no matter how slack a dad is, if he does the least little thing, people gush over him." This is a hilarious read, perhaps best enjoyed while eating Krispy Kremes with a few girlfriends. (Sept.)

So funny you will laugh out loud
By Stephanie Manley
Rarely do books make me chuckle out loud. If you live in the south, or appreciate the differences that makes southern culture unique, you will enjoy this book. Celia Rivenbark divides the book into chapters which discusses the trials and tribulations of life. She has a humorous outlook on life.

The book starts out nicely with describing a trip to Disneyland, and what a bad parent you are if you do not take your child there, buckling under the pressure of taking your child there, and the "fun" that will only happen under the pressure of having fun. Note: Disneyland isn't always fun for everyone.

I love her look on parenting, and the shock and horror of when your child must go from toddler clothes to little girl clothes. As the style of fashion goes from safe designs to where you are having to dress your six year old going on seventeen. It is a shock to the system when you are trying to find clothes that do not make your child look like a street walker. In addition to Disneyland, dressing a six year old girl, she writes about taking a school class to the zoo, the rigors of volunteering for a Halloween festival, and volunteer opportunities that your six year old signed you up for.

This book is extremely enjoyable, and personally I would love to sit down with Celia Rivenbark and have coffee with her. Her book is a delightful look on living in the south, and how one navigates parenthood. I highly recommend this book to those who are wanting to seek out an amusing look into what it is like being a parent in the south.

Funny, but a little overboard with the "southern" humor...
By RayShack757
I have to admit that I did enjoy reading this book, however, I found it to be slightly annoying with all of Rivenbark's "southern" dialect. I grew up in VA, the northern boarder of NC (where Rivenbark lives) and I have never heard most of the sayings in this book. The last few chapters I had to force myself through. They almost did not make sense. The first 3/4 of this book were humorous little anticdotes from every-day life. The last section of the book was like it came out of nowhere. A random conversation with the OnStar people about Christmas shopping, a rant about Chipotle sauce, etc. I found the constant "ya'lls", "hons", and purposeful incorrect grammar to be quite annoying.
Nevertheless, I am highly considering giving Rivenbark another try. The majority of this book was funny (not Laurie Notaro funny of course), but it felt so forced at the end. Perhaps I will have better luck with another one of her works.

How can you resist a title like that?
By Colleen McMahon
I mean, who hasn't thought that themselves? As soon as I heard of the title of this book, I knew I had to read it. So when I saw it on the new book shelf at the library I snatched it up. I read, I giggled, I made my partner listen to me read whole pages aloud and we both laughed uncontrollably.

Celia Rivenbark is like your fun sarcastic girlfriend who says things that make you snort milk out of your nose if she catches you at just the right moment. I am a non-heterosexual, childless, transplanted Northerner but I thoroughly enjoyed her thoughts on marriage, child rearing, and Southern living, as well as her unabashed enjoyment of junky TV (sister!) and contemplations of celebrity foibles ("Speaking of aliens, as I write this, Tom Cruise and Katie 'I'm With Crazy' Holmes are expecting a celebrity pod-baby. Yes! The seed has been successfully planted and now is growing and flourishing in the formerly Catholic womb of Ms. Katie.").

Very funny stuff, and a nice light, quick read either all in one gulp like a pint of Haagen-Daz, or rationed out like the package of Oreos you are hiding from the kids. Consider it as a gift for the favorite slacker-mom in your life (as long as you are reasonably sure she ISN'T one of those dressing her 6-year-old like a skank, because that would hurt her feelings, bless her heart...)

A fairly good book on Tuscan Cuisine
By B. Marold
When I opened this book by Mary Ann Esposito to read and review, I was looking for something that would raise it above it's face value of a companion volume to an average PBS cooking show series. When I embark on a review with this objective, I almost always find something. In this case, I did not.
This doesn't mean this is a bad book, only that it may not have that much to offer to someone who is already steeped in Italian culinary lore. It is inferior to, for example, David Downie's book on Roman cooking as a snapshot of an Italian regional cuisine. It is less genuine on a personal level than Mario Batali's `Simple Italian Food'. It is less of a cookbook than Lydia Bastianich's two books accompanying her PBS series on Italian food and Italian-American food. I will recommend this book as a source of classic Tuscan recipes over books by Pino Luongo, who clearly states that most of his recipes are original with him or his restaurant staff. They are not Tuscan; they are inspired by the Tuscan cuisine.
Part of the problem is that, unlike Lydia's books, this one has recipes in chapters which follow the episodes on the TV show rather than recipes organized by course as is typical of most Italian cookbooks. This awkwardness is not offset by a supplementary table of contents listing all recipes by food or by course.
Another part of the problem seems to be that unlike Mario's book, the experiences of Tuscan culture are all second hand. Most life experiences are not of the author but of the owner and employees at the Tuscan villa, Spannocchia, at which the PBS crew is housed. Ms. Espositio's experiences feel like a tourist's experiences.
One thing that impressed me about the creation of this book is the number of people it takes to put on a cooking show, even on PBS. There must be a dozen principle contributors at least in the Acknowledgments. In comparison, Julia Child started her show at the Boston PBS station with nothing more than her husband, a cameraman, a soundman, a producer, and herself.
I really wish I would have seen the PBS series on which the show is based, as I am sure that would have increased the value of the book for me by two or threefold. My experience with books by the `Frugal Gourmet', Jeff Smith show that books like this can be very attractive if you are not familiar with the wider world of cookbooks. Twelve (12) years ago, I thought Jeff Smith was something special. Now I know he was simply a decent communicator with a gimmick. I don't even think he was especially frugal. Since this book does accompany a TV show, I am really surprised at the dull photographs. The sepia coloring even seems to obscure some details in the picture.
There is no problem with the recipes in this book. Many classic Tuscan dishes are here and all of the recipes give competent instructions on how to prepare them.
I would recommend this book to anyone who plans to travel in Tuscany anytime soon. The book has a strong travelogue flavor about it and its recommendations about where to eat in Tuscany are not doing anyone any good unless you go there. The price of the book rescues it from a below average rating. As I stated at the outset, the book provides what is expected and nothing more. My only regret is that unlike many other regions of Italy, I have yet to find a good cookbook that effectively explores this cuisine.

Expect a great little book....
By A Customer
I received this book as a gift at a crucial point in my life, and it's made a huge difference in my piece of mind. I highly recommend it to anyone who is questioning their past choices in mates and wanting to know how to break their old patterns in a very tangible way. This book concentrates on meditation and how intention and focus can make you magnetic to others.
Here is the chapter breakdown:
Step 1: Be still
Step 2: Invite grace in
Step 3: Know what you want and why
Step 4: Clear the way
Step 5: Source the miracle
Step 6: Find and express gratitude
Step 7: Stay the course
The steps presented here would work not just in attracting the right relationship, but really in attracting anything that you want in your life. Kathy Freston writes in a fresh and direct way. She presents examples of case studies of people that she's worked with, which illuminates the points she's making along the way. I can't wait to buy her meditation CDs.

This book is a gem!
By A Customer
I was expecting to find the same advice that most inspirational books give regarding relationships--in other words, how to snare a man! "Expect a Miracle: 7 Spiritual Steps to Finding the Right Relationship", focuses on examining ourselves and finding out what exactly we want in a relationship and then gives practical, clear, guidance to attaining our goal. The prayers and mantras are truly inspiring and the exercises given to help identify our patterns, are not only helpful but hopeful, as well. I loved this book and will read it often, to help keep me on track and focused! There is definitely something in it for
everyone!
