Despite its title, this book should not be confused with Jack Miles's God: A Biography or Karen Armstrong's A History of God. Those books are works of serious scholarship for the general public; this one seems more like a Monty Pythonesque Book of Lists as Bertrand Russell might have compiled it. Waughâ€"grandson of Evelyn, son of Auberonâ€"comes by his cynicism honestly and employs it relentlessly as he piles up thousands of tidbits about God from the Bible, the Qur'an, the Book of Mormon, the Mishnah, the Gnostic gospels, Dante, the medieval mystics and John Milton. Dividing his chapters by Shakespeare's seven ages of man, he amasses creation stories in chapter 1 ("Mewling and Puking"), stockpiles death-of-God philosophies in chapter 7 ("Sans Everything"), and in between accumulates snippets about every imaginable or unthinkable topic including God's preferred smells (burnt meat and incense), short memory and, above all, vicious cruelty. Though Waugh says that questions about God's existence and nature "ought to be treated with respect at the very least, for they are questions of the utmost historical significance," his own approach relies heavily on sarcasm and acrimony. "God must be gratified," he writes, "surprised, puzzled even, that he is nowadays so often described as 'good'â€"especially since the holy scriptures bear a considerable weight of testimony to the contrary." Readers who appreciate British schoolboy humor, are amused by exaggerated literalism and enjoy poking fun at organized religion will hail this encyclopedic mishmash.

Worthwhile

While this book is unconventional in presentation, the scholarship and intellectual underpinnings are remarkable. For any layperson interested in "The White Goddess" or "The Golden Bough", Waugh's poking and prodding of the old testament will provide opportunities to re-examine the foundations of western thought.

Waugh asks "Who does God think He is?"

Alexander Waugh takes on the question of who (or what) is God by going to the source, what God himself has said about himself or done in sacred texts. From the God of Adam and Eve to the present, he looks at how God acts and describes Himself to his faithful. Knowing that humans are fallible but that God must by His very nature be infallible, Waugh hopes to find the truth in this manner. He finds that the Old Testament God and Jesus are irreconcilable and different beyond justification. This leaves the reader to decide if the question of the nature of God is unanswerable, or if the author is, as his high school teacher said, suffering from "presumptuous arrogance."

Enlightening and entertaining

I idly started scanning this book because of the provocative title, and ended by reading it with absorption. It makes the Bible interesting in a way that no other book I've encountered does. I suppose that's because it treats it like a mythology, which it is, instead of sacred writ.
Of course, no omniscient, all-good deity could have written the thing, or had anything to do with most of its bloody-minded shenanigans.
It's also one of the funniest books I've read recently ("God," that is, not the Bible-- it takes an extraordinary sense of humor like this author's to see much fun in the Good Book.)

Hopper's Nighthawks is one of the most iconic images in 20th-century art, but Theisen's analysis of the "desolate, alien, denatured, perverse, [and] desperate" masterpiece is too facile to support all the cultural weight he wants to place upon it. The interpretations veer between the obvious (he characterizes the urban setting as representing an absence of nature) and the bizarre (he imagines the painting's four figures engaging in group sex). Some sections add flashes of insight—like a discussion of Hopper's familiarity with commercial illustration that segues into the influence of Warhol's Pop—but in trying to make Hopper resonate with everything from cool jazz to Robert Crumb's underground comics, Theisen overreaches and occasionally stumbles. Discussing film noir, for example, he dwells on the "movie screen–like proportions" of Nighthawks, although Hopper completed the painting a decade before the introduction of wide-screen projection. At times, the fledgling critic can't seem to make up his mind: is the uniform menu of the diner supposed to be depersonalizing, as he suggests in one chapter, or subversively democratic? As Theisen meanders through his checklist of cultural pessimism, some readers may conclude that Nighthawks is better off letting its powerful imagery speak for itself. 8-page color insert. (July)

About the Author
GORDON THEISEN was born in Queens, New York. He has worked as a landscaper, dishwasher, barback, cashier, library clerk, construction worker, telemarketer, taxi driver, teacher, proofreader, and freelance writer. He holds a Ph.D. in English literature from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He lives in Carrboro, North Carolina, with his wife, two-year-old son, and his wife's cat.

One of those rare, brilliant non-fiction titles

This book examines the dark underside of American life, the kind ominously represented in Nighthawks, the famous painting by Edward Hopper. Theisen quickly sets up the difference between the optimistic, sunny, daytime America and the world of night, and not even night so much as the non-mainstream undiscovered parts.

I enjoyed this book particularly much because of the disparate elements the author brings together. although to some people, talking about Pulp fiction, Weegee the photographer, and Hopper together is hard to follow, I picked up right away on his meaning and felt really interested to read a scholarly unpacking of the imagery, meaning, and themes.

I compare this book to Paul Fussell's oeuvre, books which say, "Ever notice this theme is in a lot of things?" and then go on to enlighten the reader and make you smarter and more educated than you were before.

Definitely buy this book.

Dissecting NIGHTHAWKS: A Treatise on Urban Alienation

Edward Hopper's paintings, well known to almost everyone in this country, are unique in that they convey a sense of loneliness, yearning, suggestions of dark thoughts, pessimism, and hopelessness - not exactly the moods one would want to examine on a daily basis, but certainly painterly images that cause us to pause when we encounter them in museums and collections.

Gordon Theisen is a fine writer and in this book STAYING UP MUCH TOO LATE: EDWARD HOPPOER'S 'NIGHTHAWKS' AND THE DARK SIDE OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHE he manages to successfully use the famous night diner painting of the artist to address the current mental state of affairs seeping into our consciousness. He wisely covers every aspect of the artist's life and work, giving us the necessary details of his life and his idiomatic stance in American art, spreads those ideas into his output thus assuring us that the one painting of the title is not an isolated image, and then begins to apply his ideas to our cultural status - at times not comfortable, but always creatively informative.

If Thiesen strays a bit too far from his title subject, drawing on his own interpretation of concepts he perceives as more than just legitimate diversions, then he can be forgiven by the reader who want more from an author than a term paper presentation. Thiesen indulges in reminiscing about our cultural icons such as diners, cigarettes, coffee, plastic, jazz, war, sex, film noir, and personality disintegration in a time of easy drugs AKA medications. Perhaps these are topics many would not elect to explore, but then they are bookmarks to the greater understanding of where our current culture stands.

If indeed our artists are our shamans then Hopper as Thiesen presents him is a prophet of sorts. Not that the book is depressing as the Nighthawks painting: Thiesen has the good will to engage us in the positive aspects of all of the negatives listed above. There is humor here, but it is humor with an edge. This book, along with other contemporary 'paintings as examples of current thought' books by such authors as Biel and van Hensbergen in their evaluations of Grant Woods' American Gothic and Picasso's Guernica, once again proves that art gives us more than visual delight: art gives us valuable food for thought...and change. Interesting Meditation on Hopper

At first glance, I expected this to be a heavy duty history of Hopper's painting, with copious documentation, contemporary views of the work, and lots of secondary source citations--something like reading a published dissertation. I was pleasantly surprised to find Theisen's book is not an ordinary work of scholarship. It's not so much academic art criticism as it is a comment on American culture and mores. Theisen uses Hopper's seminal work, "Nighthawks," as a jump-off point to discuss film noir, Pulp Fiction, Andy Warhol, pornography and Puritanism, the Beats, Russ Meyer, the Great Gatsby--you name it. At times, it feels overstuffed, and it contains unnecessary editorializing (about the Iraq War, for example) and some sloppy mistakes (as one amazon reviewer has noted, Theisen wrongly says Gatsby kills himself at the end of Fitzgerald's novel). But overall it is an imaginative and engrossing work that will inform those who don't know much about Hopper the man and who always found him an understudied artist. Theisen's book could have a place on a cultural studies or U.S. history shelf, and it would make interesting reading for a freshman American history survey class. An unusual, though very readable thought piece.

Olson, a veteran legal commentator (The Litigation Explosion) and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, profiles a sector of the American legal system that he contends is out of control, inflicting serious damage on the nation's economy. The target of Olson's polemic is the use of class actions by a coterie of private lawyers who extract enormous verdicts and settlements from lawsuits against producers of tobacco, asbestos, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and the like. According to Olson, trial lawyers subvert democracy by using courtroom procedures to obtain reforms, such as regulating guns, which the American left has not been able to achieve in the federal or state legislatures. The lawyers distort public opinion, buy influence with judges through campaign contributions, introduce junk science into evidence and manipulate juries through unworthy courtroom theatrics. The class-action lawyers, Olson contends, garner stupendous fees for themselves, often produce minuscule payments to their clients and drive entire segments of business into bankruptcy. Olson contends that the class-action bar is bolstered behind the scenes by left-leaning organizations such as those affiliated with Ralph Nader. This is a partisan indictment, powerful enough in its recital of horror stories about misuse of the law, but so one-sided that it will appeal largely to those already convinced of the rectitude of big business.

He reviews the early asbestos, silicone breast implant, and tobacco cases, showing how the law has expanded to accommodate this legal elite at the expense of the public. Good public relations and the capacity to confuse the public contribute more to jury verdicts than justice, according to Olson, who cites examples of the bashing of the auto industry by the popular television programs 60 Minutes, 20/20, and ABC's Dateline. Olson is especially concerned that as private attorneys accept contingency fees to litigate on behalf of states, they have become too cozy with states' attorney generals, particularly in tobacco lawsuits. This effective privatization of the public interest has created a group of lawyers who have become exceptionally wealthy and major donors to political officials. A Hidden Gem

As a former (and now retired) business lawyer in California, I have observed the antics (and, yes, the anti-social tendencies) of the class action trial lawyers over the years with a great deal of embarrassment and chagrin, and have wondered how and when they would be reined in. That day is still a ways off, unfortunately, for the reasons Mr. Olson relates in his book.
Mr. Olson "tells it like it is," citing a mountain of well-researched facts and anecdotes, and he builds his case with the reader relentlessly. The author demolishes the myths that the trial lawyers' bar would have us believe, and explains why the system is out of control. Concludes he, "Year upon year we do nothing to govern our elite litigators, and the result at length is that they have decided to govern us." The ultimate victims are the taxpayers and the integrity of the legislative and judicial system.
This book should be required reading of every legislator and judge, both federal and state, as well as by every well-informed American, whether of conservative, liberal, moderate or agnostic bent. I rarely write book reviews for posting on www.Amazon.com, but this book was extraordinarily good.

There's an old Latin maxim that asks, "Who watches the watchmen?"
I just finished _The Rule of Lawyers_ and Olson should be thanked for piecing together more than a mere series of judicial outrages. Olson shows how trial lawyers have syphoned billions of dollars into their own pockets while manipulating legislatures and judges in order to shield themselves from accountability. This is nothing short of an assault on the Constitution. Every American who cares about the future of the country (please forgive the purple prose, but I'm serious here) needs to read this book.

This smoothly written biography concentrates on social history, although Erickson ( Bonnie Prince Charlie ) also details the political and economic background of 18th-century France. Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) was raised the daughter of Empress Maria Theresa in the Viennese court of the Hapsburgs, at whose lavish balls and fetes as many as 10,000 guests might dine. But Versailles, where she reigned after marrying King Louis XVI of France, glittered even more, and Erickson recreates its life aptly, describing the elaborate clothes, the duties of courtiers, the rigid etiquette. While the queen's education had equipped her for the role of royal hostess, she was ill-prepared to deal with the intrigues surrounding her. At first timid, fearful and passive, Antoinettesic gradually grew brittle and hardened by "a constant surfeit of pleasures." The author believes the queen had only one extramarital love, a Swedish nobleman named Axel Fersen. And she argues that Antoinette, condemned to death by revolutionaries, finally showed courage and dignity: her last words were an apology to her executioner for accidentally stepping on his foot. Although the book does not add a great deal of new information, it is a highly readable account.

Erickson attempts to right the wrongs and correct the image of this queen in an easily read biography that avoids both academic cant and "psychohistorical" pretension. Tracing Marie Antoinette from her childhood among her 13 brothers and sisters at the court of her legendary mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the author portrays her not as the selfish queen of lore but as a reasonably intelligent, opinionated woman of decidedly conservative bent whose ultimate "crime," for which she paid with her life, was having the wrong title in the wrong place at the wrong time. With these words, popular biographer Erickson ( Bonnie Prince Charlie, LJ 12/88) brings to a close the story begun on a cold birthday almost 38 years earlier of the tragic French queen. Though this sympathetic account would appear to add little new to historical record or interpretation, Erickson's descriptive writing talents will insure a readership for this book. This is the author's first French subject. Perhaps her next biographical study should be of a person less studied than the tragic queen.

Very Informative...

While this was not exactly what I was looking for, it turned out to be a very good book. For some reason, I started this thinking it was a historical fiction...I was wrong. It reads like a fiction, but it's a historically accurate account of Antoinette's life, no liberties were taken in an attempt to make the book more interesting.

Having recently read many books on Henry VIII and his clan (and enjoying them immensely), I decided I wanted to learn more about Marie Antoinette and her story. I knew very little about Marie and Louis when I stated this, and it was perfect for enlightening me. For those of you who are already familiar with the life of Marie, it may not be a book for you. From what I gather, there's no new information in this...but if you're looking to learn about them, then go for it. It tells you everything you need to know without feeling like a high school text-book.

*(A side note - this in NO way hampered my review or the number of stars since it's not the authors fault) *DO NOT* read this on the Kindle!! It's not a very long book, but for some reason it really slowed down the wake speed, as well as page turning. Sometimes, when turning on the device (after taking 20+ seconds for the book to load, which is WAY to long) I would try to go to the previous page to remind myself of where I left off (a simple click of one button), and it would jump back 10-15 pages! This is the only book I've had this happen with. I've loaded books on after this one, and everythng worked just fine. That said, I suggest reading the actual book if you have the choice.)

An in-depth account on the life of Marie Antoinette

"To the Scaffold" was one of the first biographies that I read on Marie Antoinette, and I must say that it was also one of the most enjoyable.
Erickson thoroughly covers Marie Antoinette's life from her youth in Austria to her last tumultuous days. As well, there are little additions about life in Versailles, and on the Paris streets.
One definite asset that this biography possesses is that one does not need much prior information about the Revolution to understand it. Different political ideologies, thoughts, and actions are carefully explained, yet the general flow of the book generally does not sway too far from Antoinette. This biography was also enjoyable to read because of the numerous (and sometimes amusing) quotations used, as well as the in-depth account of Antoinette's last days.
The only noticeable fault that I found was the tendency of the author to take sides. For example, it is said (with evidence provided in the footnotes) that Marie Antoinette and Fersen most definitely had an affair. This is, in my opinion, still a debatable topic.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend this biography to everyone. Novices to the revolution will find it an invaluable starting point, and the more knowledgeable will greatly enjoy the quotations and first-hand accounts recorded.

Enjoyable account of Marie Antoinette and French history...

I read this back in highschool - this book was a chance discovery as I wandered among the shelves at my school library, looking for something to read. This book looked interesting, so I picked it up, and I was not disappointed. Not only does Ms. Erickson offer a glimpse into Marie Antoinette's life, but she also gives a background of French history (which is vital to understanding the French Revolution and the circumstances that stripped the royal family of their powers and led to Louis and Marie's deaths)

I found this book to be wonderful. I love history and am a sucker for these books. I found this book (and the few other books of hers that I read) well-researched, and Ms. Erickson makes it interesting, instead of some boring, dry old account. So many people liked to detract Marie and slam her and blame France's problems on her (much like historians liked to slam the infamous Empress Dowager Cixi [1835-1908] and blame China's problems on her when in reality China and the Qing Dynasty had been struggling for long before she became the Emperor's concubine), but this book shows that France's problems ran more deeply and that Marie was a scapegoat. Sure, she wasn't perfect, but she was more of a victim of circumstance than her detractors would say, and this book is very eye-opening. Overall a informative and enjoyable read.

Suprising!

The opening pages of the 1st chapter hooked me. I didn't expect the humor, or the extent of the intimacy that I found here. The two alpha males in the band, Hetfield and Ulrich, were unnusually forthcoming in some areas of the book, and Berlinger was lucky enough to capture some very touching moments (ie James following his bandmate, Lars, into another room to make sure that he was ok after a particularly volcanic altercation). I loved this book! There were little notes from some of the therapy sessions that I'm very sorry didn't make the documentary (Some Kind Of Monster), the subject of this wonderful little history. Berlinger and Sinofsky did a stand-up job with the film, too, which I strongly recommend seeing.

More Metallica, less Joe please

The book is mildly interesting. The thing I find most annoying about it are the constant references to the past projects of the film maker. I expected a book that was about Metallica and instead got something that is full of self referencial drivel and soul searching from Joe. Perhaps it's my fault and my expectations were set incorrectly (by me), but I found the book to be quite boring overall. Hope the DVD is better.

'Monster' Book Revives Reading

In a time where sitting down and reading book is as rare as finding a good slice of pizza outside of New York; and attention span's are shorter than the line at a showing of Gigli, Joe Berlinger and Greg Milner's "This Monster Lives," certainly brought back a good reason to throw on your favorite pajama pants, grab a hot beverage, snuggle into that oh-so-comfortable spot on the couch, and lose yourself in a great piece of literature.

"This Monster Lives," delves into the behind-closed-doors aspect of the movie Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, which was dreamt up and filmed by acclaimed documentary filmmakers Bruce Sinofsky and co-author of the book, Joe Berlinger. Berlinger and Sinofsky, best known for their HBO documentaries, Paradise Lost : The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, Paradise Lost 2: Revelations and Brother's Keeper, filmed rock band Metallica through what could quite easily be considered the roughest and bumpiest road in the Bay Area band's tumultuous career. "This Monster Lives," tells the story of how the idea of making a movie about Metallica came to be, how that idea became a reality, and how it didn`t become another This is Spinal Tap.

Joe Berlinger and Greg Milner tactfully give us the insider's look at what it was like to work with one of the world's most successful rock bands of all time. From pitching the idea to the band and management to the red carpet premiere(s) of the movie, "This Monster Lives," lets the reader feel like they were there every step of the way, becoming absorbed into this world of rock 'n roll, filmmaking and yes, even therapy sessions.

For someone who can't get through a magazine article without stopping mid-way through to go do something else, I felt compelled to read chapter after chapter until I found myself either late for work or looking up to see that it was 4am and I had to be up in a couple of hours. All in all, "This Monster Lives,' is certainly a great book for anyone that's ever had the strive to accomplish a seemingly impossible project. You don't have to be a musician, an author, a filmmaker or even a fan of Metallica to appreciate the art that both Metallica and Berlinger, Sinofksy and Milner have released. "This Monster Lives" did for books what Metallica has done for music. After reading it, you just might be able to find that good slice of pizza outside of New York.

Two old friends set out for a weeklong romp through Santa Ynez, Calif., wine country that comically strains their friendship in Pickett's lively debut. Smart, hapless narrator Miles is divorced and broke, and his novel's been rejected all over town. His handsome, "ursine" best friend, Jack, a successful actor, is about to get married, and wants to enjoy a few last days of freedom. Pickett gleefully chronicles their many minor adventures, including the oversexed Jack's attempts at getting laid, a boar-hunting episode and a staged car accident. Add to that massive amounts of wine: oenophile Miles swills rather than sips, and Jack's always been a party guy. While Jack works his charm on the ladies, Miles has his own flirtation with a lovely waitress. Miles can be a delightful narrator, but he's no prince: he's a bore when it comes to wine, for example, and he can get a little pseudophilosophical ("photos mock the present by staring back at us with their immutable luster of our youthful past"). He also thinks nothing of snatching a couple thousand dollars from his alcoholic mother on her birthday. But redemption for all is promised and Pickett takes his readers on a jolly ride. His novel sounds like a perfect buddy flick, and indeed, it will have its chance: Alexander Payne (About Schmidt; Election) is directing it for Fox Searchlight.

Gotta love Miles

I hate to say this, but the movie was better. Paul Giamatti makes Miles a much more sympathetic character and you really feel that he is a good guy underneath his flaws. In the book Miles comes across as a narcissist who likes to intimidate friends with his vocabulary and pretensions. We already knew how he ripped off his mom and lied about other things, but at least the film version has you rooting for him because he is adorably down on his luck. Jack however, Jack is just the same. It is hard not to laugh at his antics and his down to earth base motives. Also the book has a "boar hunt" that did not need to be there, except to show the locals as gun-toting rednecks. Some of the names were changed in the film, and Jack's girlfriend does not have a daughter in the book. I also wanted to meet his annoying in-laws but they are only in the film version. Overall a good read but not one to make you love Miles.

The Book vs. The Movie

Traditionally, a book is better than the movie version -- notable exceptions include "Field of Dreams," "Ordinary People," and "The Horse Whisperer." But now, finally having read this book and seen the movie multiple times, I vote for the movie, while giving enormous credit to Rex Pickett.

Having read the book, one must wonder about some of the choices made in the movie -- why, for example was Miles moved to San Diego for home base and why does Maya vanish for more than the last half hour of the movie? We all know the most famous line from the movie about f***king Merlot, but in the movie, the line just seems to drop out of nowhere. As Pickett writes throughout the book, Miles is so anti-Merlot and it's explained why -- we're not surprised when he gives the line in the book. I also like the fact that the novel gives context to the term "Sideways" and has Miles saying goodbye to Jack in Paso Robles, a moment lost in the movie.

As I said, give Pickett credit because the major plot points in the movie are mostly originally established in the novel. But the idea that Jack would have to pay Maya to have sex with Miles seemed silly and the whole subplot with Brad and wild boar hunting seemed irrelevant. A good book editor would have slashed this novel by at least 50 to 75 pages and made it tighter. Way too long.

I give Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor enormous credit for taking the great parts of this story and making them ring true emotionally. They truly deserved the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Replacing "Terra" with "Stephanie," replacing her shotgun with a motorcycle helmet, making Maya into a more complete person, including that lovely monologue about wine. They also put things in the proper sequence.

So the novel is more a curiosity piece to me and I suggest any aspiring screenwriter buy the book and see the movie. I would have loved to been the fly on the wall and seen/heard Rex Pickett's reaction the first time he either read the script or saw a preview. Different worlds.

Fun for wine lovers

For anyone who enjoyed the movie, this is a must read. The book begins with a hysterical wine tasting that should have made it to the movie, but didn't, and the ending was far more satisfying than the one in the book. Pour yourself a glass of wine--preferably not merlot--and enjoy!

Autumn Leaves is a dull, cluttered drama from first-time novelist Victor McGlothin. Marshall and Rorey are the stars of their college football team until Rorey, who has just admitted he has AIDS, kills himself. Marshall is still a hot property, but his success begins to interfere with his relationship with longtime girlfriend Jasmine. Meanwhile, Kennedy is miserable with arrogant, philandering coke dealer Simpson, but she sticks around out of habit until she is tempted by sensitive artist Legacy. Melodramatic 11th-hour plot twists (a baby, a murder, an AIDS death) only serve as reminders that nothing of interest has happened all along. The cliche-riddled prose is clumsy and condescending; stereotypes abound, especially Kennedy's mincing co-worker, Morris. McGlothin opines that "love is like a bad perm, you can spread it on thick and it still won't take" the same could be said about weak writing.

Danger In A Pretty Package

Remember that line, 'the life you save may be your own.'? Autumn Leaves will have you doing some serious thinking about whether you've done or are in the midst of doing someone who can take your life away. Victor McGlothin uses wit, romance and the ups and downs of college life to tackle a serious subject.
It's a story that we've all lived, at least in part. College campus. True love and commitment, sans condom. Casual sexual encounters prompted by lust, depression, confusion, whatever--sans commitment and condom. Most of us made it out okay. Autumn Leaves is the story of a few who did and a few who didn't.
My favorite character is Marshall Coates, the college football hero, who cherishes his girlfriend, Jasmine. Marshall does some things that sought-after men will do, but he knows where his heart is. In his defense, had Marshall's life not taken an emotional dive, he probably never would have strayed. I love Jasmine's ability to move on, but I don't like the fact that she wants to keep her man in her hip pocket at all times. I can't understand a young sister being so wrapped up in a man that she makes hardly any friends during college. That's why women with 2.5 children and 15 years of marriage go wild at 35.
The other main female character is Kennedy, a beautiful, has it together woman on the outside, lost child on the inside. Just about every woman with any dating experience can identify with Kennedy's inability to break from her lover, Simpson Stone. But, I want to know, is it okay for a woman to be whacko just because her heart's broken? Although I felt for Kennedy, when she went off, I wanted to have her arrested.
Also, I like it that McGlothin doesn't ease up---in a reader's perfect world, orphaned/good guy Legacy would get a break. McGlothin doesn't play it that way, he makes it clear that AIDS isn't a respecter of persons. None of my single friends use condoms on a regular basis, even while they urge their sons to do so. I guess that's because the only AIDS sufferers that most of us know are gay, drug users, or women who love men in stripes. Unfortunately McGlothin's right, the next wave may hit much closer to home.

Although I've been married for some time, the implication that 'this could happen to you,' still made me squirm. That's a good thing. I hope that after reading Autumn Leaves some sister somewhere has ended a dangerous relationship and taken an HIV test. I'll bet that it's happened. That would be a great thing.

A story for anyone who has ever fallen in love

Looking for a relaxing read to take my mind off relationship problems, I nearly randomly chose this novel, and was pleasantly surprised. Victor McGlothin does a wonderful job of working thought-provoking instances into this entertaining story of love and life.
The characters are as real as they come, and I can't imagine that any reader would think that it was impossible to connect with any of them. From the vivid descriptions of both their physical and emotional traits, you get to know each in a way that allows you to empathize with their plights and rejoice in their victories. When a love is torn apart, you are just as angry as the person who has found out they have been cheated on, and almost as hurt. When a promising new relationship develops, you rejoice with both characters and wish them the best. And when a young man struggles with the repercussions of a bad decision, you can't help but hope along with him that he will be able to set things straight.
Universal themes of love, friendship, and consequences of choices touched home to me on several occasions. As I read, I found myself repeatedly rooting for someone dealing with a common, yet troubling issue that threatened to change their life forever. If I had never been in the situation myself, I could think of an acquaintance who had. The suspense of whether or not any given character would have the resolution that I anticipated kept me from putting this down until I had read it cover to cover.
This book manages to provide a touching, emotional story without sacrificing social importance. I laughed, cried, and paused to reflect on my own life. Each character takes you on a journey of self-exploration as they discover what really matters most to them.
I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone. The honest portrayal of the consequences rendered by choices, and of love, betrayal, and second chances pulls on your heartstrings while causing you to think about the choices you make in your own life. This was truly a wonderful read.
