In Like Flynn: A Molly Murphy Mystery, by Rhys Bowen

Fledgling private investigator Molly Murphy's latest assignment gives her the opportunity to escape the typhoid epidemic sweeping across New York City in the summer of 1902 for the lush Hudson River Valley. And it comes from an unlikely source-Captain Daniel Sullivan, a New York City police detective and erstwhile beau of Molly's. She has vowed to keep him at arm's length until he can rid himself of his socialite fiancée, but she can't pass up the chance to take advantage of his offer of a real detective job.

Daniel hires Molly to go undercover inside the country household of Senator Barney Flynn, in Peekskill, New York. Flynn's wife, Theresa, has become the latest devotee of a pair of spiritualists known as the Sorensen Sisters. The frail Theresa is desperate to use the sisters' alleged abilities to hold a séance to contact her infant son, who was kidnapped five years ago and never found; the accused kidnapper was killed before he could tell police where the boy was being held. But the police are sure the women are frauds.

When Molly allows herself to be distracted from the Sorensen Sisters and the members of the Flynn household by the unsolved kidnapping, it is a race against time to find out what's really going on before it's too late.

In Like Flynn is the latest captivating installment in a series which has garnered an impressive array of awards and nominations in just three books: Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy mysteries have won the Agatha Award, the Anthony Award, the Bruce Alexander Historical Award, and the Herodotus Award, and have been shortlisted for the Agatha Award, the Macavity Award, and the Mary Higgins Clark Award.

In Bowen's absorbing, well-plotted fourth entry in this Agatha Award–winning historical series (after 2003's For the Love of Mike), Molly Murphy's former beau, policeman Daniel Sullivan, arranges for Molly to leave New York City (and the rapidly spreading typhoid epidemic of 1902). The police are interested in the Sorensons, a pair of sisters working as spiritualists, whom they want to expose as fakes. Molly joins the upstate household of Sen. Barney Flynn, posing as one of his numerous cousins recently arrived from Ireland. Flynn's wife, Theresa, has invited the Sorensons to the Flynns' Hudson River estate because she wants to make contact with her missing son, presumed dead after disappearing in a kidnapping attempt several years before. Molly also plans to investigate what happened to the Flynns' son at the behest of the child's nurse, who was implicated in the crime but still proclaims her innocence. Determined to get at the truth, the redoubtable Molly has to confront a dark part of her own past before this complex tale comes to a bittersweet and heartfelt conclusion.

Molly Murphy escapes the typhoid epidemic in New York City in 1902 by going undercover as a cousin of Senator Barney Flynn in his house above the Hudson River. Flynn's wife still mourns the kidnapping and death of their son, and she has turned to spiritualists for solace. Molly, while investigating the spiritualist sisters, also tries to untangle the web around the kidnapping. Told in the first person, Molly's adventures strain credulity a bit this time: more than one attempted rape, a poisoning where she forgives and dismisses the guilty party, and the reappearance of an evil figure from her past whom she thought was long dead. Even the Black Hand and the orphan trains play roles. Meanwhile, Molly toys with the affections of an Irish police officer and a Jewish anarchist and is toyed with in return. Too much, to be sure, but series fans will want to see what happens next. GraceAnne DeCandido

Review

“Entertaining...Molly Murphy is endearing, and her quick wit and sharp mind make her a protagonist to root for...Well written and fast paced, with a twist that will leave readers truly surprised. This novel is not to be missed.” ――RT Book Reviews (4 stars) on The Edge of Dreams

“Once again Rhys Bowen proves why she's one of the great mystery writers working today. She never, ever falls into formula. And in this latest Molly Murphy novel, she takes her hero away from all the comforts of her New York City home to the bright lights of Gay Paris at the turn of the 20th century. It's a world of cafes inhabited by Picasso and Degas and Monet. It's a Paris where the Eiffel Tower is still new, Sacre Coeur a construction site, and the ripples of the Dreyfus Affair linger - in the city, and in the murder in which Molly finds herself embroiled. Atmospheric, tightly plotted, heart pounding, this is Bowen at her best.” ―Louise Penny on City of Darkness and Light

In Like Flynn
By BabyMo
I have been a fan of Rhys Bowen’s book for a couple of years. I first discovered her Royal Spyness series, but I also enjoy her Molly Murphy mysteries. I have read all of the Royal Spyness books and most of the more recently published Molly Murphy mysteries, so now I am going back and reading more some of the earlier Molly Murphy books.

Molly Murphy is a young Irish immigrant living in New York City in the early 1900s. She has decided to be a private detective, but this is not an easy job for a woman at the time. As In Like Flynn begins, Molly receives an opportunity to spend part of the summer at Senator Flynn’s grand estate on the Hudson. Her friend, police captain Daniel Sullivan, needs help exposing a pair of spiritualists, and the easiest way to do this is for Molly to pose as Senator Flynn’s distant cousin from Ireland.

So, Molly packs her bags, and pays her “Dear Cousin” a visit. The spiritualists are staying at the request of Mrs. Flynn, who would like to contact her young son. The boy died after being kidnapped, but his body was never recovered. Molly makes some inquiries, and something about the facts of the case just doesn’t make sense. But Molly needs to be careful: she is not being as discreet as she should, and there might be someone out there determined to put a stop to her nosy questions before she exposes too much of the truth.

I enjoyed In Like Flynn quite a bit. Having the book set in a different location is a nice touch; a change of scenery helps keep the book fresh. Bowen does a wonderful job with characterization; the regular secondary characters are delightful, but these new characters all seem to have something to hide. Molly encounters someone from her past, and these scenes are especially tense. The mystery portion of the book is especially gripping, and the climactic scenes are tense.

I would recommend In Like Flynn to fans of historical mysteries. Bowen includes enough background information for these books to function as standalones, but I think there is satisfaction in regarding reading the mysteries in order. There’s certainly a sense of character development over the course of several stories. I am looking forward to continuing to read the Molly Murphy stories I have not read, and I know that I will be sad when I’ve read everything that has been published!

From Publishers Weekly
This free-wheeling, fast-paced drug odyssey -- the speed-addled San Francisco doppelganger of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting -- features a butch female bike messenger named Jim, an all-girl punk band and the never-ending search for the rush that makes it all worthwhile. Jim's hardcore speed habit means she's headed nowhere fast; when forced to choose between drugs and the girl she loves, disaster and a cross-country road trip follow. Along the way, the reader is treated to a vivid portrait of a life in collapse, as well as poetic and seductive descriptions of the highs preceding this downfall. Jim's relationship with her stripper girlfriend, Ally, provides the story's emotional center and the arc of the protagonist's development. Amid a tornado of activity and attitude, the author builds a small oasis of honest and unvarnished emotion, constructing a touching and nuanced portrait of a boy who has not quite grown up. Jim rides fast and lives hard, yet somehow, beneath all the bravado and the crude drama, she retains an almost childlike innocence and purity of heart that radiates through the accumulated layers of grime and vice, carrying the reader through her darkest hours. The narrative can be gratingly autobiographical in tone at times, and the rushed, free-form style is occasionally a bit gimmicky, but this earnest debut is well worth the ride.

From Library Journal
Breedlove's debut novel should be required reading for any teenager who thinks that the drug world is glamorous. Godspeed follows the trail of its heroine, Jim, a butch-lesbian and punk-rock fan who spends most of her waking hours trying to score her next high while supporting herself as a bicycle messenger in San Francisco. The story centers on Jim's breakup with her girlfriend, Ally, who finally tires of sending Jim out with money for food only to hear from her a day later when the money has been spent on drugs. After getting fired from just about every bike messenger job in the city, Jim goes on tour as a roadie with a punk-rock band, spending most of her time dreaming about patching things up with Ally but remaining captive to her addiction. Written in the dialect of the punk world, this novel might be difficult at first for the uninitiated, but after a few pages it takes the reader on a fascinating if cautionary tour of some of the seamiest places of the drug underworld. Recommended for large public libraries. Caroline Mann, Univ. of Portland Lib., OR

From Booklist
Breedlove takes us on a walk on the wild side, or at least the seamier side, of town. Replete with detailed, graphic depictions of various sexual encounters and shooting up heroin, her debut novel presents Jim, superbutch dyke bike messenger who loves the rush of going 40 mph with no brakes, and Ally Cat, a live-sex-show performer. Jim also loves her drug highs more than her girlfriend, so when Ally presents her an ultimatum--her or junk--she winds up alone with her addiction. After losing her job, she hits the road with a punk rock band and involves herself in meaningless affairs, all in pursuit of the ultimate rush. She actually lives long enough to clean up her act, get a dog, and return to Ally, only to find that Ally has her own drug habit now. Thus the tables turn for the oddly affecting heroine of an oddly affecting book. How oddly affecting? Well, so lyrical does it wax about shooting up and getting high, one almost feels like experimenting. Whitney Scott

An unrecognized American classic
By YouFightLikeAnneRice.Blogspot.Com
This is a suprising great novel from former Tribe 8 member Lynn Breedlove. From its first words, it grabs the reader and pulls him/her into the world of Jim, a self proclaimed tranny dyke, as she explores the world from California to New York, after being dumped by her lover, a sex worker named Ally. Comic at times, yet heart-breaking as we see Jim spiral in drug use and loss love, Breedlove's novel is beautiful in everyway, from its characters (from Jim to her mom) to its prose style, poetically rendered within its 287 pages. It is a good read for anyone interested in queer studies and queer lifestyles, such as those defined in Judith Halberstam's "In a Queer Time & Place," but great works of fiction should never be limited to an audience, and works such as "Godspeed" should be read by anyone as part of the American literary canon to be ranked, as Halberstams says, with Burrough's "Naked Lunch." I am just deeply surprised that this hasn't recieved more literary acclaim as within my own library it ranks as one of my favorite pieces of writings.

Tops on My List!!
By Treasure
Wow! What a GREAT book!! I was hooked from the first line of Breedlove's Acknowledgements & loved that she included her mother's comment there.
For 30+ yrs, I've read a lot of lesbian fiction. I'm soooo tired of thinly plotted mysteries and tooooo many flower-labia, sunset and beaches coming-out romances. Unlike all of them, this story gets into the nitty gritty of a real sort of urban lesbian life, one more complicated than "am I or aren't I?", "will she or won't she" and "will she, with me?" storylines.
Reminds me a bit of 'A Crystal Diary : a novel' by Frankie Hucklenbroich, in that it's written (style & content)from inside the head of the protagonist, whether she's high at the time or not.
Gives it that sense of NOW, and keeps it real.
Like her musicianship with the band Tribe 8, Breedlove pumps it out with this book!

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant: from Jim's inverse twin
By A Customer
Lynn Breedlove did the impossible: created a character who is the butch, speed-loving version of me (I am femme and opiate-loving...but had Jim (protagonist)'s exact experiences) The relationship between Jim, Ally (Jim's love) and speed (Jim's other love) was so beautifully and wrenchingly rendered, it will strike a chord in anyone who has ever been in a relationship with both a beautiful girl (or boy, i guess) and a beautiful-feeling drug. The tangles with dyke-hating morons were perfectly depicted, the scenes of going on tours with a band were as well...This book spoke to my own experiences so accurately, but the ending scarred me, the only thing I didn't really get. Given Jim's drug experiences, wouldn't one have thought that she'd be a bit more sympathetic to Ally? Or maybe the idea was that an 'uptown girl' trying to get on the wagon and a 'downtown girl' just beginning her h honeymoon can't mix. In any event, I was enthralled. A must read. P.S. Before reading this book, I thought I was the only one who ever used the term "h goggles". Perhaps it is a regional bay area thing?

In Paris's Pere-Lachaise cemetery lie the bones of many renowned departed. It is also home to a large number of stray cats. Now, what if by some strange twist of fate, the souls of the famous were reborn in the cats with their personalities intact? There's Maria Callas, a wilful and imperious diva, wailing late into the night. Earthy, bawdy chanteuse Edith Piaf is a foul-mouthed washerwoman. Oscar Wilde is hopelessly in love with Jim Morrison who sadly does not return his affections. Frederic Chopin is as melancholic and deeply contemplative as ever, and in honor of the tradition of leaving love letters at his tomb, he is now the cemetery's postmaster general. Last but not least, Marcel Proust is trying to solve the mystery behind some unusual thefts - someone has stolen Rossini's glass eye and Sarah Bernhardt's leg. Told in a series of amusing set pieces and intercepted letters, this is a delicious tale of intrigue, unrequited love, longstanding quarrels, character assassinations, petty spats, and sorcery that builds to a steady climax at the cats' annual Christmas pageant.

Review
Canadian Praise for Waiting for Gertrude:

"A fanciful and highly amusing novel...Only Bill Richardson could create such an engaging romp and such original characters. This hilarious tale is wildly original."
- Packet & Times

"Richardson brings his intelligent wit to the page in this fantastic tale...The relationships between the famous and infamous characters, love, passion and a few missing items all adds to a mystery that comes to an impressive climax. With his imagination at full throttle, Richardson has created a novel that is both witty and highly entertaining."
- Grande Prairie

"A delightful, funny read for a gray day."
- Nanaimo Daily News

"Richardson savours double-entendres, puns, and send-ups. This is a catty graveyard in form as well as substance. Yet through it run Richardson's thoughtfulness, literary intelligence, and affection for his subjects. This is the same elegantly gentle subversion that hooked people who read Bachelor Brothers' Bed & Breakfast."
- Georgia Straight

"Richardson writes convincingly of the feline world, and his affection for cats is apparent...[He] brings considerable skill of characterization to his feline community."
- Quill & Quire

"Waiting for Gertrude is a fantasy with a great sense of fun...Wonderful and unusual...A funny and moving work that focuses on devotion and longing."
-Uptown

"Comic, clever and slightly ribald...Full of wordplay and double-entendre."
- The Vancouver Sun

Part romance, part fantasy, and part satire
By A Customer
Alice B. Tolkas was born in San Francisco. She eventually left the States to live with her love Gertrude Stein in Paris. Over twenty years after Gertrude died, Alice, who mourned her loss all that time, finally joins her beloved. Both are buried in the renowned Paris Pere-Lachaise Cemetery.
However, Alice fails to catch up to Gertrude wherever she is. Instead she learns why the cemetery seems to be a haven for stray cats when she is reincarnated as a feline. She soon realizes that other famous souls buried here have been reborn as cats, but alas none are her beloved Gertrude, the only person to light her fire. All she does is pass time, eats the food brought by Ondine the Spay queen, and avoids the sorcery of some of her spookier peers. For Alice is WAITING FOR GERTRUDE to join feline heaven.
Fans who appreciate a novel that is extremely weird but humorous and satirical will enjoy the odd WAITING FOR GERTRUDE. The two paragraphs above concentrate on the title player for review convenience (moi that is). However, there are several other subplots involving famous deceased that readers will be Wilde about lighting a funeral pyre and pitying poor Abelard, etc. The story line never takes itself seriously yet paints a strong message about positive relationships are important while long term quarrels, spats and everything ugly in life is a waste of time. Part romance, part fantasy, and part satire, the Monty Python crowd will be perfect for this insane look at the afterlife.

An Intelllectual Fantasy
By V. Marshall
I picked up this book after having visited the graveyards of Paris and falling in love with the artful serenity they exude.
At times witty, charming and even historical this little story takes a visit to a French graveyard into a whole other world. Famous people who reside in death at the Pere-Lachaise Cimetiere in Paris are finding theselves reincarnated into stray cats. Bill Richardson is loyal to the original historical figures and allows all their known eccentricities to remain alive within the cats. Alice B. Tolkas pines away for the return of her beloved Gertrude Stein, Jim Morrison is a swaggering sexy tomcat, Fontaine describes the cats with great poetic harmonies, Oscar Wilde falls in love with Morrison, Isadora Duncan still dances in the moonlight with ribbons, Colette still exudes desire, Maria Callas is still quite the diva, Sarah Bernhardt the consummate actress, and Proust becomes a reculsive private eye, just to name a few.
I rated this book with only 3 stars because it is a bit complex to read. The style is chaotic, bouncing around from letter, to narration, to poetry and more letters. The writing is littered with uncommon words that leave you feeling ignorant if you don't take the time to look them up. The characters are complex, of course they should be, and halfway through the book I stopped to refresh my memory on who was who before continuing on. I recommend a quickie refresher course on interesting French figures before beginning to read this story only because it allows you to grasp all the subtle nuances as you go along. All in all a GREAT idea had it been toned down to the masses but a superb book for literary snobs and the French aficionado. My favorite conversation in the book is between Oscar Wilde and Alice B. Tolkas (as cats), "Never disparage a surface. Nothing recommends beauty more than superficiality. Real beauty walks through the world uncluttered and unmasked. It dosen't hide in the earth like a truffle, attendant on the tender mercies of a passing pig." Bravo, Bill Richardson for awakening the dead!!

If you love cats, and you love France, and you have an extremely peculiar sense of humor and an appreciation for the absurd, I think you'll love this book. You may even adore it.

Waiting for Gertrude is set in Paris' gargantuan Pere Lachaise cemetery, where the souls of some of the notables buried therein have returned to Earth (translated, to use their term) as cats. A befurred Alice B. Toklas (the book's narrator) is waiting, and waiting, and waiting for her dear Gertrude Stein to reincarnate (translate) while Oscar Wilde pines and whines and preens hoping to attract the affection of his beloved Jim Morrison ("Jamz"), a ferocious, kitten-devouring three-testicled tomcat. All the while, quadriped versions of Isadora Duncan and Edith Piaf are making all kinds of merry hell for the other feline residents of the cemetery who include:

Jean de la Fontaine, the French fabulist returned now as a second-rate tour guide who insists on delivering his lectures in iambic pentameter, and whose poems introduce the various characters and situations;

Modigliani - then as now, a great painter;

Rossini - an aged and quite senile cat who cannot remember he was once a composer;

Collette - a high-class Persian cat of aristocratic ownership who followed a randy tomcat from her wealthy home to the cemetery, and now a noted teacher of yoga;

Chopin - the once-composer and now Per Lachaise's Postmaster General, where the cats have learned how to write and do write often;

Sarah Bernhardt - still an actress despite losing a leg;

Marcel Proust - a Private Investigator investigating a series of mysterious thefts taking place over the course of the novel and whose head is often - quite literally - stuck up his nethermost orifice in search of inspiration;

Heloise and Abelard - back on Earth as kitties who are, respectively, a highend caterer and "lifestyle consultant" and a publicist; and,

Ondine - the only human character, known as the "Spay Queen;" the cats' arch-nemesis and an enthusiastic proponent of feline population control

Readers who appreciate a novel that is extremely weird but profoundly humorous and satirical will enjoy Waiting for Gertrude. Part romance, part fantasy, and part satire, the reader who enjoys Monty Python and Douglas Adams will be perfect for this insane look at the afterlife.

You simply have to love a book containing a sentence that reads, "There never was such a ratter as Sarah Bernhardt!" What a fun read!

The Lost King of France: How DNA Solved the Mystery of the Murdered Son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, by Deborah Cadbury

Louis-Charles, Duc de Normandie, enjoyed a charmed early childhood in the gilded palace of Versailles. At the age of four, he became the dauphin, heir to the most powerful throne in Europe. Yet within five years he was to lose everything. Drawn into the horror of the French Revolution, his family was incarcerated and their fate thrust into the hands of the revolutionaries who wished to destroy the monarchy.

In 1793, when Marie Antoinette was beheaded at the guillotine, she left her adored eight-year-old son imprisoned in the Temple Tower. Far from inheriting a throne, the orphaned boy-king had to endure the hostility and abuse of a nation. Two years later, the revolutionary leaders declared Louis XVII dead. No grave was dug, no monument built to mark his passing.

Immediately, rumors spread that the prince had, in fact, escaped from prison and was still alive. Others believed that he had been murdered, his heart cut out and preserved as a relic. As with the tragedies of England's princes in the Tower and the Romanov archduchess Anastasia, countless "brothers" soon approached Louis-Charles's older sister, Marie-Therese, who survived the revolution. They claimed not only the dauphin's name, but also his inheritance. Several "princes" were plausible, but which, if any, was the real heir to the French throne?

The Lost King of France is a moving and dramatic tale that interweaves a pivotal moment in France's history with a compelling detective story that involves pretenders to the crown, royalist plots and palace intrigue, bizarre legal battles, and modern science. The quest for the truth continued into the twenty-first century, when, thanks to DNA testing, the strange odyssey of a stolen heart found within the royal tombs brought an exciting conclusion to the two-hundred-year-old mystery of the lost king of France.

From Publishers Weekly
British writer Cadbury (Terrible Lizard) sets out to unravel a historical mystery in this winning, highly readable account of the French Revolution and the fate of the dauphin, the son of the executed King Louis XVI. Cadbury dramatically relates how the French monarchy moved inexorably toward the abyss of 1789; she describes the seizure of the Bastille, the royal family's imprisonment in the Temple and the execution of the king and queen. But what became of their son? According to the official account, Louis XVII remained in solitary confinement in a filthy, vermin-infested prison cell, where he contracted tuberculosis and died at age 10 in June 1795; bizarrely, the physician who performed the autopsy literally, and fortuitously, stole the boy's heart. Yet millions believed that the prince had escaped, and over the years, hundreds came forward claiming to be the dauphin. Not until two centuries later, with advances in forensic science, was the mystery of Louis XVII's fate finally solved... Cadbury does an exemplary job describing the history, the mystery and the tragic fate of Louis XVII. 8 pages of b&w photos.

Review

“Absolutely stupendous . . . This is history as it should be. I can't praise it highly enough. It is stunningly written; I could not put it down. This is the best account of the French Revolution I have ever read.” ―Alison Weir, author of Henry VII: The King and His Court

“A wonderful book . . . Deborah Cadbury's fascinating account of a child victim of revolutionary brutality is a masterly synthesis of science and narrative history that provides a definitive solution to a celebrated mystery. Authoritative, lucid, and utterly absorbing.” ―Anne Somerset, author of Elizabeth I

“A first-class read---informative, entertaining, and a great, grand adventure. Most noteworthy.” ―Margaret George, author of The Autobiography of Henry VIII

“Unputdownable. Deborah Cadbury succeeds in conveying the human tragedy of this story more emotively than any other writer. Added to that, her book has the gripping pace of a thriller. I cannot recommend this too highly.” ―Maureen Waller, author of 1700: Scenes from London Life

“The Lost King of France is a fascinating and well-told story that reads with great interest and pleasure. My congratulations on a well researched work.” ―Ian Dunlop, author of Louis XIV

“An absorbing tale, combining sound history and modern science. The restrained description of the sufferings of the little prince from the officious sadism of the revolutionary officials serves only to add poignancy to his story.” ―John Hardman, author of Louis XVI: The Silent King

Fantastic popular history
By E. A. Montgomery
This is as readable as any historical novel and far more interesting. Cadbury brings the shadowy image of Marie Antoinette's children fully to life with detail and emotional depth. Unlike most books on this topic, the parents are moved firmly to the background, coming forward only to illustrate their influence on the children and their lives. I learned more in this fast paced enjoyable read than I have in half a dozen 'scholarly' books on the period. The Lost King's resolution may not surprise you, but it's a rewarding read that immerses you as fully as an epic film. One of the finest histories I've read on any subject and more emotionally affecting than most fiction. You will not be able to forget this family or view them in the same fashion again. A true must read.

If it were longer and the same it would be 5 stars for me
By A Customer
This book provides what Antonia Frazer's biography of Marie Antoinette does not -- more about the children, more about the aftermath of Marie Antoinette's death. I thought this book would repeat much of Frazer's but, in fact, it enriches Frazer's work. And, except for some melodramatic flourishes, I think it is better written. Though I usually read 2 or 3 books at a time and can easily jump from one to the other, I could not put this book down until I finished it.
I wish there had been more to this volume. The DNA passages sometimes feel 'padded' and the 'mystery' element seems somewhat contrived. Who cares! It was so engrossing that I neglected everything this afternoon so that I could finish this book.

An unputdownable piece of historical non-fiction
By ilmk
It is a rare piece of historical non-fiction that is so gripping it becomes a one-sitting read, as Deborah Cadbury's book does. As Alison Weir's comments on the hardback edition state, it is: `stunningly written'.
The book opens with a present day mystery of a heart that is purported to be that of Louis XVII of France - the boy-king - that is (dis)proved by DNA. Rather than giving us the answer immediately the author then tells the story of the downfall of the French Monarchy at the hands of the sans-culottes and the leaders of the French Revolution. Told from the royal perspective, centering on Marie Antoniette, Louis XVI, Louis-Charles (Dauphin and future Louis XVII) and their other immediate family and associates, we are given a story full of immense pathos, where the royal family - clearly depicted as undone by previous French royal excesses and a failing economy - are treatedly brutally at the hands of the revolutionaries. Marie Antoniette is depicted as a naïve young woman of excess, then as a great mother, ultimately as aa Queen of France whose suffering reflects much of the Revolution. Louis XVI is presented as a monarch whose stoical steadfastness to uphold the good of his country costs him the constitution and ultimately his life, Louis-Charles as a boy wise beyond his years - clearly intimated as potentially a great french monarch.
The first part of the book is taken up with the history of the french royal family from the moment Maria-Antonia of Austria marries the young Dauphin and follows them as they are vilified, blamed and ultimately killed for the problems assailing France. The story is told from the royal perspective, Cadbury engendering great sympathy with the family, possibly to the extent of presenting a somewhat biased view of the revolutionaries as a brutal regime whose leaders use the anger of the mob to further their own political gain. Drawing mainly on personal testimonies of Clery who served the family during their Parisian imprisonment at Tullieres, The Tower and the Temple, Marie-Therese (daughter of Marie-Antoniette and Louis) and Madame Tourzel, we are given the emotional history of a key point in European history where the author gives a very focused view on the ordeals and depravations of Louis XVI, Marie Antoniette, and finally, in a lengthy section, on Louis-Charles mental and physical abuse. Part 1 ends with the death of Louis-Charles according to the official version given at the time.
Part 2 deals with the twenty year period of revolution, Robespierre and Napoleon, culminating in Marie-Therese's (as the sole direct survivor) reentry into Paris as the Queen with the newly crowned Louis XVIII and subsequent re-fleeing. At this point history gives rise to the legend that Louis-Charles did not die (as Dr Pelletan's autopsy initially stated) but rather was substituted with another child. The primary mover of this legend came from Madame Simon, the wife of the man depicted as responsible for much of Louis-Charles systematic abuse who claimed they had smuggled Louis-Charles out in a wicker basket. What resulted was a procession of Dauphin-claimants, the most prominent being Naundorff, Bruneau and Hervagault each of whom claimed to be the long-lost surviving Louis-Charles - to the evident distress of Marie-Therese. As each of these were found guilty of being imposters eventually the rumours and claimants dwindled until twentieth century forensic and, eventually, DNA, technology enabled scientists to coduct tests on the original family, the notable claimants and the preserved heart that Pelletan had taken from the dead boy during the autopsy.
This leads us back to the opening statement of the book and the resulting conclusions, based on DNA, seem to give a resolution to the story.
What the author has done is present a deeply sympathetic view of the lives of Louis XVI, Marie-Antoniette and Louis-Charles, perhaps seeking to redress the perceptions of them as given in many political articles of the time, and finally, give a satisfactory ending to a mystery that has echoed over the past two hundred years. She has done it in a way that, conclusions aside, is immensely readable and interesting.

Hello, My Name Is Mommy: The Dysfunctional Girl's Guide to Having, Loving (and Hopefully Not Screwing Up) a Baby, by Sheri Lynch

Hilarious and true and inspirational, Hello, My Name is Mommy is for every pregnant woman and new mother who ever felt helpless and out of control instead of confident and aglow.

Sure, women know pregnancy is no bed of roses, but Lynch taps into her own dysfunctional childhood and fears about becoming a mom to label a much profounder worry many moms-to-be have: that their own pasts were so screwed up that they're doomed to repeat the cycle. Dr. Spock may tell moms to trust their instincts, but Lynch's Misfit Mommies want to do every last thing but that. They feel like frauds and imposters, and Lynch's real-girl's voice will be instantly recognizable to them. Lynch will walk and talk new moms through it all: from lamenting the hot dogs and second-hand smoke they were raised on (and, of course, "you turned out just fine") to the realization that kids are kind of germy and gross (but feeling that way doesn't make one a bad mother) to keeping it together at work with Cheerios in the old nursing bra.

--If a mommy was raised on raw hot dogs and second-hand smoke is she doomed to repeat the cycle?
--Kids are kind of germy and smelly and gross, but does thinking that mean you're a bad mommy?
--Can a working mommy actually go to a meeting and function with Cheerios stuck to her body under her nursing bra?

Full of useful advice and understanding, Hello, My Name is Mommy is for every mother who isn't quite sure if her instincts can be trusted and who may have wondered-even for one second-if she's already screwed up her newborn's life.

Only if you're more than Dysfunctional...
By F Distad
This book held a few funny moments, a few practical words of wisdom and a few good parenting hacks... That being said, if you did not grow up with an extremely dysfunctional childhood. One where you question if your parents really loved you etc, this book is not for you. It isn't about women who are worried about screwing up their baby - because, let's face it what first time mom ISN'T worried about that. It's really for what she refers to as "Misfists" or "Misfit Moms" which means they are a special breed damaged in more ways than your average messy childhood. If this isn't you, avoid this book! About 80% of what she has to say and how she approaches pregnancy, newborn and even the epilogue of toddler life won't be something directed at or meant for you.

Don't even want children, but still thought the book was great!
By Leah J. Segal
I picked up this book only because my favorite radio talk show host, (Ms. Sherry Lynch), of all time had written it. I have no intentions of getting pregnant any time soon, if at all, but still found this book interesting and fun to read. Sherry does a great job of explaining what pregnancy is really like, because it is true that women that have never experienced it have no idea what they are in for. I learned many new things about the female body, for example she explains in detail how you can tell when you are fertile or not, without using a test of any kind.

I would recommend this book to anyone, even men! I found myself telling my boyfriend about all the little tid bits that I read about from the book. I think Sherry did a great job of letting clueless people in the mystery of pregnancy, with humor and language that is easy to understand. Thanks Sherry!

Informative & Entertaining
By Chic Lit Lover
This book will give you a realistic idea of everything from conception, delivery and raising your child but in true wordsmith style from Sheri Lynch. I listen to her and Bob every morning on the radio in Greensboro NC and have learned a great deal more about her from reading this book. Her advice is some of the best I've heard....DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY & TRUST YOUR INSTINCT! I wouldn't consider myself a "misfit" however much of the same knowledge contained in the book applies to "regular" want-to-be mom's in the world! GREAT and FUNNY read!

Heart and Sole: The Shoes of My Life, by Jane Eldershaw

"There are only two kinds of women in the world, those who love shoes and those who had the misfortune to be born without the ability to experience total bliss on finding a pair of perfectly designed pumps in the right size at half price."

Heart and Sole is a lighthearted illustrated memoir, full of wisdom and humor, of one woman's life through her shoes. Jane Eldershaw remembers the shoes she has loved, the ones that turned out to be terrible mistakes, and the important life lessons she learned along the way. She writes about her first pair of heels (and the battle she had with her mother to get them), the white go-go boots and wooden platform shoes of her youth, and the power of red shoes, as well as how to judge a man by his shoes and the importance of girlfriends when shopping for footwear.
Heart and Sole dishes out shoe advice, fashion memories, and warmhearted observations on the shoes of our lives. The perfect gift for every shoe diva and footwear lover.

From the Back Cover
Heart and Sole is about the shoes that make you feel wonderful (red strappy sandals), the shoes that turn out to be false friends (those sexy black boots that pinch your toes after two blocks), and the shoes you adore but can't actually wear (the most darling size six pink sneakers snatched up on sale---except you're a size seven). Heart and Sole is about the subliminal signals shoes send ("I am beautiful, stylish, and in control!"), and how the right pair can temporarily transform you into whomever you want to be.

Shoe-obsessed? A footwear fanatic? This is your book!

What fun!
By J. Arena
When you can't get out to the mall and actually SHOP for shoes, you can get that same shoe-shopping FIX from Jane Eldershaw's book. It's every bit as cute as those red, kitten-heel, t-straps that you've been dreaming about. (If you don't know what that means, this book is NOT for you!)

Memories and Cinderella Shoe Moments
By Rebecca of Amazon
After returning from a recent trip to LA, my husband commented on women's obsession with style and I had just purchased a pair of shoes that made me look much taller and thinner. Shoes can make you lose weight, I love it.

Anyway, it was time to read this adorable book about shoes. I don't have as many shoes as I did in college although I tend to remember my life in some autobiographical way through the shoes I was wearing at the time. I remember the boots I wore in Paris and the sexy shoes with sparkly diamonds I wore for a special occasion.

Jane Eldershaw seems to see life in a similar fashion. Heart and Sole is a lighthearted memoir that explores Jane's life through her shoe selections. She gives tips on how to judge a man by his choice of shoes and why there are only two types of women in the world.

Jane Eldershaw is a writer and magazine illustrator who was born in Australia. Her writing style is original, playful and has a love for descriptive words to tease your mind. She has worked for New Woman and Vogue Australia. The book jacket hides a beautiful high-quality ruby covered and exquisitely bound book. Women who love well-made shoes will appreciate the style and quality of this tiny book. The book was also illustrated by Jane and I was especially amused by "toe decolletage." She has drawn pictures of her shoes, everything from her boots to her Italian Interlude when she wore shoes from Rome. She explores life choices after she wore her new cherry-red-spike-heeled ankle-straps with silver buckles.

Jane also reveals interesting facts about Marilyn Monroe, Barbie dolls and how to find a shoe-inn for storage. Where do your shoes live? What is the heel called. I had no idea there was a "kitten" heel, but it is very common.

I could easily become obsessed with shoes again and have been in the past, but lately I'm all about comfort and the shoes that are fancy are sure to only be worn for special occasions. This book reminded me of how fun it is to shop for shoes and I'm of course always on the look for pretty slippers for wearing while writing reviews. I did try on clear plastic shoe the other day and had to feel a bit sorry for Cinderella. Glass could not be overly comfortable although a girl can dream. I've stepped on broken glass and ruined a heel while almost tripping down steps, so that might be a sign.

This delicious book made me fondly remember the Nordstrom of the past where men dressed in suits played Prince Charming and slipped slippers of all colors onto your feet. Where have those days gone? Jane explores the elements of a good shoe salesman and it is nothing like Married with Children. ;) It is a bit more like Sex and the City. My husband might want to read this book because he is a shoe guy. He has been known to give me advice on shoe selections. He hasn't seen what I bought for our anniversary. Hee, hee...

Where the Mountain Casts Its Shadow: The Dark Side of Extreme Adventure, by Maria Coffey

Without risk, say mountaineers, there would be none of the self-knowledge that comes from pushing life to its extremes. For them, perhaps, it is worth the cost. But when tragedy strikes, what happens to the people left behind? Why would anyone choose to invest in a future with a high-altitude risk-taker? What is life like in the shadow of the mountain? Such questions have long been taboo in the world of mountaineering. Now, the spouses, parents and children of internationally renowned climbers finally break their silence, speaking out about the dark side of adventure.

Maria Coffey confronted one of the harshest realities of mountaineering when her partner Joe Tasker disappeared on the Northeast Ridge of Everest in 1982. In Where the Mountain Casts Its Shadow, Coffey offers an intimate portrait of adventure and the conflicting beauty, passion, and devastation of this alluring obsession. Through interviews with the world's top climbers, or their widows and families-Jim Wickwire, Conrad Anker, Lynn Hill, Joe Simpson, Chris Bonington, Ed Viesturs, Anatoli Boukreev, Alex Lowe, and many others-she explores what compels men and women to give their lives to the high mountains. She asks why, despite the countless tragedies, the world continues to laud their exploits. With an insider's understanding, Coffey reveals the consequences of loving people who pursue such risk-the exhilarating highs and inevitable lows, the stress of long separations, the constant threat of bereavement, and the lives shattered in the wake of climbing accidents.

Where the Mountain Casts Its Shadow is a powerful, affecting and important book that exposes the far reaching personal costs of extreme adventure.

From Publishers Weekly
Coffey, whose previous book, Fragile Edge, detailed the death of the man she loved on Mt. Everest, here examines the psychological and emotional side of extreme adventurers and that of their family members. For these profiles, Coffey draws on her own experience as well as that of other climbers and their spouses. A common theme emerges, of the powerful appeal of the next challenge, even when climbers have suffered severe injuries and are leaving spouses and young children at home. Although Coffey doesn't offer conclusive reasons as to why partners tolerate such behavior, she deftly examines the unique bond between an explorer and his or her family. She recounts the surprise of a climber who learns the author has married a non-climber: "I laughed at his presumption that I'd seek out another mountaineer, yet I understood the reasoning behind it. The mountaineering tribe is a comforting place for the partner of a climber. Its protective circle shuts out the questioning eyes of the outside world. There's no need to explain why someone would chose, again and again, to put himself in danger-it is understood, accepted as normal, seen as admirable." Climbers repeatedly put themselves at risk, says Coffey, and return to climb after suffering serious injuries, even amputations. According to Coffey, competition among climbers (and a sense of self-definition through climbing) is simply an essential part of their lives. Coffey's interviews brim with rugged honesty, and some of the accident details are gruesome and potentially disturbing, yet her book's combination of memoir and psychological overview is unique.

From Booklist
Mountaineering enthusiasts of all varieties (from hands-on adventurers to armchair climbers) will see another side of their favorite sport in this poignant book. Instead of merely writing about climbing--the thrill, the excitement, the rush--the author discusses what she calls the personal costs of adventure. She writes about men and women climbers who have seen friends die or who have died themselves. She writes about the wives and husbands and lovers who stay behind, wondering if their loved ones will come home. It's a deeply moving perspective, and the author, whose own boyfriend, Joe Tasker, died on Mount Everest, approaches the subject with a grace and delicacy that are entirely appropriate. This isn't a book about heroes, about men and women who bravely lost their lives. It's about the way some men and women are driven, over and over again, to risk their lives in the pursuit of something few other people can even begin to understand--and the people they often leave behind. Review

“Coffey begins where Jon Krakauer left off. His characters strive, suffer and vanish 'into thin air.' This compelling book offers voices from the other side of the mountaineering story - those left behind.” ―Los Angeles Times

“...an important book...Coffey is an accomplished author with the specific expertise to make this book the great read that it is.” ―Gripped Magazine

“This book is a page-turner: Coffey's writing style is direct and ferociously honest, while her use of emotionally gripping anecdotes infuses an engaging, novelistic feel...A gripping must-read.” ―American Alpine Journal

Interesting prospective on a sadly frequent topic. However at times can start sounding redundant with similar points made with just different characters.

Haunting and Sobering
By M. Griffith
An excellent view into the aftermath of tragedies on the mountains, especially in the lives of those left behind. Its a bit unbalanced in that its all about people that died and therefore really only has the stories of everyone that is killed but then that is kind of the point of the book.

Common Thoughts Within an Uncommon Crowd
By Rodney J. Szasz
There is a time in every climber's life when they reach a certain realisation that if a certain set of circumstances continues one will surely die. For me it was on a mountain in Japan in late winter benighted on a long route with no bivvy gear. Your brain tells you two things: 1) that you cannot travel at night, and 2) if the weather turns you will die because of lack of gear. The faces of your kids emerge large in your head, you know almost exactly how you will die, how your body will gradually shut down and you will die in degrees. One knows this before the climb... but one goes anyway... moreover if death was not present and real it would rob one of the ultimate experience of climbing.

Maria Coffey knows her stuff because she was married to one of my childhood heros -- Joe Tasker, who, along with Dougal Haston were the men I wanted to become! I wanted to define myself like them and surrounded myself with people who gained the reaffirming ethic and sometimes egotistical death-defying feats of the mountaineer. Of course I never really made it in this journey -- life family, job, the prospect of a stable career with family and kids intervened. But Coffey describes the reality of being married to one of the centuries real "hard men" and the world that surrounds them and what makes is reaffirming in risking your life for some individual fleeting glory. Those who did not compromise and in the end were killed by the very thing they loved and defined their existence.

She does this while chronicling the inherent risks well known to anyone raised in the mountains. The details are graphic and disturbing: like watching your friend freeze to death and being unable to do anything about it... that is the savage arena where nature makes life a pitiable shambles but also has the power to instill in people a sense of personal strength and fortitude. A feeling that is often more powerful than the prospect of the many limbs lost, the scars and the broken bones. One does all this with the prospect that they will be neither admired by many others, nor appreciated by many, and certainly will gain little money. In foreign wars soldiers go into battle mostly because they have to ... but with mountaineering, people place themselves in harm's way to reaffirm humanity... no one forces it upon them. It is this feeling that needs to be explained and which Maria Coffey chronicles so well in clear lucid prose in a way forcing reflection... she does this without the Krakauer trend to sensationalise. She writes in many ways similar to the classists in Mountaineering literature of the 1950s. She has written a very powerful and thought provoking book.
