From Publishers Weekly
Three Orlando, Fla., women form a friendship club for spiritual inspiration and professional support in this earnest, plodding novel by Jackson (Ties That Bind, etc.). Amber Stuart, Brandy Bennett and Carla Osborne, otherwise known as the ABCs, have been meeting regularly for a year, holding "sistah-circle" gatherings where they share wine and secrets. They have plenty in common: all three are successful businesswomen and all have been done wrong by men. Brandy, owner of a "very prestigious hotel," discovered on the eve of her wedding that her husband-to-be was sleeping with her best friend; she went through with the ceremony, but then showed the incriminating video at the reception. Now someone is stalking her at work, and she must live in close quarters with a hunky ex-FBI agent while he tries to get to the bottom of the mystery. Amber, a bookstore owner, left her husband three years ago after she found him in bed with another woman. Since then she has thrown herself into her work, but when one of her customers-a handsome tax attorney-passes out on the premises, she devotes herself to nursing him back to health. Carla, computer company CEO, is a single mother as the result of a disastrous one-night stand. When her son's father discovers that he has a child, she is willing to let him into her life, but reluctant to let him back into her heart. Jackson's characters are credibly flawed and endearing, but stiff exposition ("Tonight was a time to not only celebrate their success, but also to embrace their growth as women who were finally able to put to rest their deep emotional pain") and canned sentiment make this a lackluster effort.

From Booklist
Three successful entrepreneurs--beautiful, intelligent, and sophisticated--meet at an Orlando support group, "The Savvy Sistahs Who Mean Business." Brandy Bennett, a 33-year-old divorcee, manages and owns a prestigious hotel. When she begins receiving threatening notes, an ex-FBI agent to protect her. Carla Osborne is a 32-year-old single mother and CEO of Osborne Computer Network. Her personal and professional lives are in conflict when a past lover reenters her life and makes her company, her son, and her affections the object of his desires. Amber Stuart is the proud owner of Amber's Books and Gifts and a 32-year-old divorcee. During her store anniversary celebration, a male customer passes out. In order to avoid a lawsuit she agrees to help him convalesce. The situation challenges all of her hard-and-fast rules about relationships and men. As with Jackson's previous novels, this will be a huge hit. Lillian Lewis

My Sisters Keeper
By Dawn R Reeves
Simply put The Savvy Sistahs by Brenda Jackson is a girlfriend-to-girlfriend novel with a twist. These girlfriends, Amber, Brandy and Carla, are not lifelong friends that met during childhood and remained friends, they met at a support group for business women in Orlando, Florida and from that forged their own triple bond of friendship.
Each came into the group with their own set of baggage but one thing remains constant, they each have no time or patience for relationships with the opposite sex. Amber is a survivor of an abusive marriage and the owner of Amber's Books and Gifts. Through a divorce settlement, Brandy becomes the owner of the St. Laurent Hotel. Brandy was highlighted in Jackson's novel Family Reunion and someone is back stalking her with ties to that novel. Carla, a single mother, is named CEO of Osborne Computer Network after her father dies and finds her company the object of a hostile takeover.
The men highlighted in this story are endearing as well and also carry some of the same baggage when it comes to relationships with the opposite sex. Cord Jeffries is an accountant and a very bitter man who must learn to let go of the past and judge people as individuals. Grey Masters is a private investigator and ex-FBI agent who has kept a haunting secret from his family about his failed marriage and Jesse Devereau is a west coast corporate raider with no shame to his manipulations and takeovers of successful companies. What role do these men play in the lives of the savvy sistahs?
In true Brenda Jackson fashion, The Savvy Sistahs is a novel about family and the ties that bind, finding love in the most unexpected places and last but certainly not least, new friendships that span the test of time.

I really enjoyed the book! You need some sisters in your corner like Carla,Amber and Brandy. One thing about them is that they took the time out for each other and didn't dog the other when they went celibate. It was moreso a team effort. So I enjoyed it and recommend it!! Get one for your favorite girl!

enjoyable contemporary romance
By A Customer
In Orlando the three thirtyish ladies met one year ago at a meeting of the Savvy Sistahs Who Mean Business. They became friends and regularly meet to share their business successes. They also share failure when it comes to men.
Pregnant Amber Stuart caught her husband in bed with another woman and went crazy leading to a miscarriage and a divorce. She now owns Amber's Books & Gifts. Just before her wedding Brandy Bennett found a video of her future spouse in bed with her best friend. Using the video as a weapon she gained an immediate divorce with her settlement consisting of the St. Laurent Hotel. Carla Osborne runs Osborne Computer Network while raising her two year old by herself.
Cord Jeffrey chokes on a cookie in Amber's store, sending her in a panic even after he recovers. Brandy hires former FBI Agent Grey Masters when someone begins to stalk her. Carla fights off a hostile takeover of her business led by Jesse Deveraux, the only man she ever loved literally and emotionally. The three relationship failures have found love, but will any one of them realize what they have if they go for it?
Brenda Jackson displays she is a savvy sistah when it comes to successfully providing an enjoyable contemporary romance starring three delightful single women. THE SAVVY SISTAHS contains three prime intermingling story lines as each of the female trio stars in their own respective tale, but overlap just enough so that the audience feels like participants in a cleverly designed plot. Ms. Jackson provides a wonderful novel that gifts fans of strong female protagonists with an integrated charming triad.

Our language is full of hundreds of quotations that are often cited but seldom confirmed. Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier considers not only classic misquotes such as "Nice guys finish last," and "Play it again, Sam," but more surprising ones such as "Ain't I a woman?" and "Golf is a good walk spoiled," as well as the origins of popular sayings such as "The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings," "No one washes a rented car," and "Make my day."

Keyes's in-depth research routinely confounds widespread assumptions about who said what, where, and when. An invaluable resource for not just those with a professional need to quote accurately, but anyone at all who is interested in the roots of words and phrases, The Quote Verifier is not only a fascinating piece of literary sleuthing, but also a great read.

Review

“The research in Ralph Keyes' The Quote Verifier is impressive, and each conclusion is like the solution to a real-life historical mystery. Who knew a reference book could be so entertaining?” ―Will Shortz, Crossword Puzzle Editor of The New York Times

“Ralph Keyes has made it his mission to hunt down and expose false quotations, and in The Quote Verifier he does that brilliantly. The Quote Verifier is a much needed corrective to the countless 'quotations' that are misquoted, falsely attributed, or downright wrong. Keyes takes apart with surgical precision every dubious quotation, old and new. In the process, he tells engagingly the stories behind the quotes, stories that are often surprisingly funny and always interesting.” ―Sol Steinmetz, co-author of The Life of Language

“Nice Guys Finish Seventh established Ralph Keyes as one of our leading quote sleuthers. With The Quote Verifier, he's become our verifier-in-chief. If you want to know who actually said what, this book is indispensable.” ―Rosalie Maggio, author of The New Beacon Book of Quotations by Women

“Quotations are powerful tools. Michel de Montaigne, the father of all essayists, observed, 'I quote others only to better express myself.' Intrepid quotations detective Ralph Keyes helps us to discover the clear truth about exactly what was said and who exactly said it.” ―Richard Lederer, author of Word Wizard

“Quotation tracers will find this an excellent book to consult. It provides all the known details about authorship and wording of a large number of quotes, maxims, observations, slogans, comments, and catch phrases. But this is not simply a reference work. Reading it is a real pleasure. The book is easy to use. Quotes are arranged alphabetically by key word and source references are provided in meticulous detail. As a valuable new scholarly resource, The Quote Verifier will take its place alongside standard books of quotations.” ―Anthony Shipps, author of The Quote Sleuth

“'I never said half the things I said,' Yogi Berra said. Or did he? Ralph Keyes' The Quote Verifier is an invaluable and irresistible resource for determining the provenance of dubious quotations. These have always been around, but with the rise of the internet, on which anyone can attribute anything to anybody, they're spreading at a terrifying pace. Thanks, Keyes, we needed that.” ―Ben Yagoda, author of About Town

Chapter One “ACADEMIC politics are so vicious precisely because the stakes are so small.” This observation is routinely attributed to former Harvard professor Henry Kissinger. Well before Kissinger got credit for that thought in the mid-1970s, however, Harvard political scientist Richard Neustadt told a reporter, “Academic politics is much more vicious than real politics. We think it’s because the stakes are so small.” Others believe this quip originated with political scientist Wallace Sayre, Neustadt’s onetime colleague at Columbia University. A 1973 book gave as “Sayre’s Law,“ “In any dispute the intensity of feeling is inversely proportional to the value of the stakes at issue—that is why academic politics are so bitter.” Sayre’s colleague and coauthor Herbert Kaufman said his usual wording was “The politics of the university are so intense because the stakes are so low.” In his 1979 book Peter’s People, Laurence Peter wrote, “Competition in academia is so vicious because the stakes are so small.” He called this “Peter’s Theory of Entrepreneurial Aggressiveness in Higher Education.” Variations on that thought have also been attributed to scientist-author C. P. Snow, professor-politician Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and politician Jesse Unruh (among others). According to the onetime editor of Woodrow Wilson’s papers, however, long before any of them strode the academic-political scene, Wilson observed often that the intensity of academic squabbles he witnessed while president of Princeton University was a function of the “triviality” of the issues being considered.

Verdict: An old academic saw that may have originated with Woodrow Wilson but was put in modern play by Wallace Sayre.

“Half the money I spend on ADVERTISING is wasted. The trouble is I don’t know which half.” In the United States this business truism is most often attributed to department store magnate John Wanamaker (1838–1922), in England to Lord Leverhulme (William H. Lever, founder of Lever Brothers, 1851–1925). The maxim has also been ascribed to chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, adman George Washington Hill, and adman David Ogilvy. In Confessions of an Advertising Man (1963), Ogilvy himself gave the nod to his fellow Englishman Lord Leverhulme (Lever Brothers was an Ogilvy client), adding that John Wanamaker later made the same observation. Since Wanamaker founded his first department store in 1861, when Lever was ten, this seems unlikely. Fortune magazine thought Wanamaker expressed the famous adage in 1885, but it gave no context. While researching John Wanamaker, King of Merchants (1993), biographer William Allen Zulker found the adage typed on a sheet of paper in Wanamaker’s archives, but without a name or source. Wanamaker usually wrote his own material longhand.

Verdict: A maxim of obscure origins, put in famous mouths.

“If you have to ask how much they cost, you can’t AFFORD one.” J. P. Morgan’s alleged response to an inquiry about the cost of his yachts is considered the epitome of wealthy imperiousness. (Some attribute the thought to Cornelius Vanderbilt.) No dependable evidence exists that Morgan actually said this, however, and biographer Jean Strouse doubts that he did. Calling the mot “implausible,“ Strouse concluded, “Morgan was a singularly inarticulate, unreflective man, not likely to come up with a maxim worthy of Oscar Wilde.” The closest analogue Strouse could find on the record was Morgan’s response to oil baron Henry Clay Pierce: “You have no right to own a yacht if you ask that question.”

Verdict: Morgan’s sentiments, not his words.

“AFTER us, the deluge.” (“Aprés nous le déluge.”) This classic remark is generally thought to have been uttered by King Louis XV of France after his forces were defeated by those of Frederick the Great at the battle of Rossbach in 1757. Biographer Olivier Bernier calls the attribution “wholly apocryphal.” At least two memoirs by contemporaries attributed these words in the plural to the king’s mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour. Others to whom the saying has been attributed include Prince Metternich, Marie Antoinette, and Verdi. However “Aprés moi le déluge” was a French proverb in common use long before Louis XV or anyone else was alleged to have said it.

Verdict: An old proverb put in many mouths, especially that of Louis XV.

“AIN’T I a woman?” This is the phrase ex-slave Sojourner Truth used to bring an 1851 convention of feminists to its feet. Or so we like to imagine. Contemporary news accounts of her talk reported no such exclamation. After exhaustive research, biographer Carleton Mabee concluded that Truth’s rallying cry was actually concocted by convention chair Frances Dana Gage, a poet and antislavery feminist who inserted the phrase “Ar’n’t I a woman?” repeatedly into her subsequent account of Truth’s speech. According to Mabee this account, which was published twelve years after the fact, is “folklore.” Most likely Gage simply abridged an antislavery motto, “Am I not a Woman and a Sister?”, and translated it into dialect for her report on Truth. Over time “Ar’n’t I a woman?” mutated into “Ain’t I a woman?” Far from being what Sojourner Truth actually said, concluded historian Nell Irvin Painter, these famous four words are “what we need her to have said.”

Verdict: Credit Frances Dana Gage for this feminist saying, not Sojourner Truth.

“It AIN’T so much the things we don’t know that get us into trouble. It’s the things we know that just ain’t so.” In various forms this popular observation gets attributed most often to Mark Twain, as well as to his fellow humorists Artemus Ward, Kin Hubbard, and Will Rogers. Others to whom it’s been credited include inventor Charles Kettering, pianist Eubie Blake, and—by Al Gore—baseball player Yogi Berra. Twain did once observe, “It isn’t so astonishing the things that I can remember, as the number of things I can remember that aren’t so,“ but biographer Albert Bigelow Paine said he was paraphrasing a remark by humorist Josh Billings. (In Following the Equator Twain also wrote, “Yet it was the schoolboy who said, ‘Faith is believing what you know ain’t so.’“) Billings, whose real name was Henry Wheeler Shaw, repeated this theme often in different forms. On one occasion Billings wrote, “I honestly beleave it iz better tew know nothing than two know what ain’t so.” A handbill for one of his lectures included the line “It iz better to kno less than to kno so much that ain’t so.” Across this handbill Billings wrote longhand, “You’d better not kno so much than know so many things that ain’t so.” Apparently the humorist considered this his signature “affurism.”

Verdict: Credit Josh Billings.

“I want to be ALONE.” Greta Garbo did say this, to John Barrymore, in the 1932 movie Grand Hotel, whose screenplay was written by William A. Drake. That movie was based on a 1929 novel with the same title by Austrian author Vicki Baum. In the English translation of Baum’s novel, the character eventually played by Garbo says, “But I wish to be alone.” In time that sentiment was attributed to the reclusive actress herself. Garbo was not happy about

You Can Quote Me on This
By Beckman Communications
Two years ago, my co-workers made fun of me because I tried to use the word "eponymous" in a news release. They deleted it, saying that no one knows what that word means anymore. One of the many things I like about Ralph Keyes is that he uses words like "eponymous" -- and he expects that you'll know what it means, too. Keyes' writing will either teach you some really cool words to use at cocktail parties -- or make you wish that you had paid more attention during your 8th-grade vocabulary class.

With Quote Verifier (QV), Keyes has added more fodder to the quote mill, which he kicked off with his Nice Guys Finish Seventh. QV can be read from beginning to end, or it can be read non-linearly as a reference.

Who originally came up with "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."? Kennedy? Which one? Neither, actually. You'll find this under the alphabetical listings under ASK, where you'll find that Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said something remarkably similar 80 years before JFK did. There's an entire section (under the "Ks") devoted to the Kennedys, especially John and Robert. Having grown up in Massachusetts, I was often treated to "Kennedyisms." John Kennedy usually cited his sources. Bobby often cited John and Ted credited Bobby.

Also, as a former and unreformed New Englander, I was ecstatic to see that theologian Reinhold Niebuhr was correctly credited for his "Serenity Prayer," as opposed to "anonymous," which I so often see. (Niebuhr's widow lived up the street from me and was the speaker at my high school graduation.) However, "Shays' Rebellion" was spelled "Shay's Rebellion," a mistake commonly made in the Midwest. Daniel Shays hasn't been quoted for saying anything remarkable, or I'm sure Keyes would have gotten his name right.

The book is organized in a very user-friendly manner. The key words in each quote are in all caps and the quotes are listed alphabetically according to the key words. An index in the back directs you to the people who said -- or didn't -- what you're trying to find. Also in the back is a key word index directing you to the quote.

If you sit down and read this book linearly as I did, a few things are bound to happen:

1) You'll hear people cited for things all over the place for things they didn't think up first. Coincidentally, I was reading the section about an army travelling on its stomach when someone made reference to it on television (attributing it incorrectly to Napoleon, as most people do according to Keyes).

2) You'll be afraid to quote anyone for fear of getting it wrong.

3) You'll wonder how long Keyes worked on digging up each quote's source. His sources range from Celestial Seasonings tea boxes and Reader's Digest (which I am going to take with a grain of salt now) to university libraries and tottering biographers of celebrities of centuries past. If someone ever found the ancient libraries of Alexandria, Keyes would be the first in line to check out who really said that an army travels on its stomach. It's kind of scary.

I wouldn't want this to be a library book that I had to return. I would want it on hand, where I could refer to it frequently and react with my notes in the margins. This book would be a good purchase for people who like to use quotes (in speeches, newsletters, classes) and want to be correct. It would make a great reference for any student or writer, as well as anyone who wants to know more about the history of our favorite expressions.

Verifiably Excellent
By Paul Kocak
I was so impressed with a newspaper feature on Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier that I ordered the book right away. I was not disappointed. There are few books I have ever encountered that are more thoroughly researched -- and so entertaining. The book is either a conversation starter (or spoiler, depending on your audience). Keyes delights in debunking commonly held assumptions about famous quotes, but there's no malice. Just meticulous and entertaining research. He points out the evolution of quotations (often much like the children's game of Telephone). I love how this wonderful reference is organized: alphabetically according to key words, interspersed with special sections on those who are frequently quoted, and a "verdict" at the end of each entry to help the reader reach a decision on a quote's origin or evolution). Thus, a special section on Yogi Berra tracks down a bunch of alleged "Yogi-isms." You might be surprised. I was. Gems abound a nearly every page. And the research is cited in a way that makes it fun to learn the origin of a phrase (or the lack of such knowledge). An example is the famous phrase "Iron Curtain." It is commonly known that Winston Churchill used that phrase in a 1946 sppech about Soviet influence. But Keyes exhaustively points out a whole bunch of similar uses that occurred much earlier. Then he gives a verdict: "Many authors, one key publicist -- Winston Churchill." I loved reading the blurb on the phrase "fifteen minutes of fame" (is it Andy Warhol's? Hey, I don't want to give away the juicy tidbits) and on the phrase "May you live in interesting times" (is it really of Chineses origin?). And so many others. Keyes's book has delighted me so much I recently found it a worthy companion on a long trip. I recommend this book to teachers and professors (even just to educate students in acquiring a healthy skepticism), news reporters and editors, talk show hosts, and anyone interested in history or good conversation. It should be on every library shelf, both public and private.

Worth Every Penny
By Phillip G. Knightley
This book does exactly what the title says it does. All those quotes you use from time to time and never know the source are now a thing of the past. I wrote a book once called "The First Casualty", taken from the quote "The first casualty when war comes is truth." I looked it up in this book and there it all was--who said it, where and when and an assessment of the value to place on each attribution. The book is worth every penny you pay for it.

Josie Prescott's friends thought she was nuts when she left her high-paying New York auction house job and her boyfriend to live on the rugged and beautiful New Hampshire coast. Truth is, Josie wondered a little herself--never mind that her peripheral involvement in a well-publicized price-fixing scandal made the possibility of a new start incredibly enticing.

Things are looking better, though, now that she's got her own auction business up and running and has made something of a success of her new life. That is, until she gets mixed up in murder, and the supremely eligible but emotionally distant local police chief seems to think she's the prime suspect.

Josie has suddenly got a lot to lose and no desire to leave her new life--or the possibility of a little romance--behind. So she sets her mind on identifying the killer and making the best out of her unfortunate circumstances. After all, Josie is grateful for her second chance in life and knows a third is just too much to ask…especially with a vicious killer on the loose.

From Publishers Weekly
In Cleland's satisfying cozy debut, a New Hampshire antiques dealer, Josie Prescott, formerly employed by a big New York auction house, turns sleuth after a potential client, wealthy recluse Nathaniel Grant, is found stabbed to death in his mansion in Rocky Point, N.H. Cleland, who herself was once an antiques dealer in the Granite State, puts her insider knowledge to admirable use in depicting what is often a cutthroat business, from price setting and haggling to handling difficult clients and competitors. She also proves adept at shifting suspicion from one character to another, including a well-established professional rival of Josie's, his harpy of a wife and the slain man's greedy granddaughter. A few valuable paintings of uncertain provenance that have gone missing and a soupçon of romance for the wary Josie help raise the excitement level. Readers will want to see more of her. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Josie Prescott left a good job at a New York auction house after blowing the whistle on her former employer in a price-fixing scandal. Her new business in a small New Hampshire coastal town is doing well. She is busy setting up an auction when the chief of police shows up to ask questions about a murder. A potential client is dead, and Josie has become a murder suspect. With a great deal to lose and no desire to leave her new life, she must clear her name. Using her knowledge of the art and antique trade, she starts searching for the killer with a bit of help from her lawyer and an enterprising young reporter. The fact that the chief of police is quite attractive--and Josie could use some romance--provides a bit of extra motivation. Josie is a nice addition to the ranks of female sleuths, and the antique-auction milieu provides an interesting background. Barbara Bibel

Antiques to Die For
By Nash Black
Jane K. Celand's CONSIGNED TO DEATH has flaws, but the introduction to Josie Prescott keeps you turning pages. Any reviewer likes to see a mystery series devoted to their profession and here is where I found the flaws.
Josie's very high end merchandise is way out of our price range, but her constant use of the word, "yeah" for "yes" is irritating. We have been in the business for over thirty years and we've never heard a dealer use that when answering someone. We're reading the series out of order and didn't notice this in KILLER KEEPSAKES. Others have mentioned the constant waterworks, etc.
Still, this is a fun read, either for the mystery/suspense or the antiques.

Tiresome Heroine
By Hovercraft
Loved all the insider information about the antiquities market and estate resolutions. Loved the plot. I couldn't stand the heroine who cried every three pages and quoted her dead father every other one. I am going to try one more in the series but if the main character does not stop whining and sniveling and telling us what "her Father would have said," that will be it for me.

From Publishers Weekly
In this witty, absorbing memoir, Chester muses about his unlikely trajectory from growing up around trailer parks and born-again Christians to working as an openly gay actor who’s appeared in several indie films, including Swoon, for which he earned a Spirit Award nomination. An engaging storyteller, Chester indiscriminately pokes fun at himself and others and is almost always upbeat (save for nicknaming his hellish summer camp "Kidshwitz"). It’s not all light, though. Chester tackles serious issues and candidly reveals his own struggles with his career, relationships, substance abuse and a disfiguring jaw malady (hence the title: "By fourteen," he writes, "I looked like a Picasso sock puppet with pimples") that required extensive, painful surgeries. Although readers may wonder how real some of Chester’s fiction-worthy characters are, they’ll nonetheless be entertained. Chester has a fresh voice—though occasionally he tries too hard to be funny—and when he opines that "the most counterproductive barriers to true genius are a healthy childhood, healthy relationships, and healthy surroundings," readers will be grateful he suffered no such encumbrances.

Advance praise for Why the Long Face?

“In this book Craig Chester writes, without malice, of how, at a Fire Island disco, he once vomited on me. I was honored. He’s a terrific actor, and a hilarious writer, and he’s way too much fun to be anyone’s role model.”—Paul Rudnick, author of In & Out

“[Chester’s] perspective and voice are unlike any other of his generation. The stories are exhausting in their hilarity, and affirm that the talent of a writer is part luck in the design that surrounds him.”—Parker Posey, actress

“Craig Chester’s been through long-face syndrome, AIDS: The Musical!, a Diana Ross TV movie about schizophrenia, and a lover who dumped him on 9/11, and he’s emerged wise, funny, and self-aware, with astounding revelations about the joys and pains of being an out actor and the redeeming nature of art and integrity. His page-turner of a memoir is a Sundance audience favorite waiting to happen, and no matter what the agents say, he should play himself!”—Michael Musto, The Village Voice

A Truly Inventive Writer
By J. Michael Click
This wry, witty, entertaining, and eminently readable tome is about as different from your typical paint-by-numbers, self-serving, egocentric showbiz autobiography as any I've ever read. Rather than blandly follow the timeline of his life and career, actor Craig Chester - an "openly gay" performer who never came out of the closet because he was never in it! - introduces himself to his readers through a series of clever and thought-provoking essays in which he uses his past as a launching pad to discuss general topics on which he wishes to comment. This fresh and unusual approach allows the reader both to pick up on the threads of Chester's life story and to get a handle on his personality, as well as his views on the worlds of filmmaking, gay politics, relationships, and many other subjects. Chester's writing proves that should he ever decide to abandon acting, he has another equally vital career awaiting him as a writer. "Why the Long Face?" is one of those books you have trouble putting down, and wish would never end. Very highly recommended!

The CIA at War: Inside the Secret Campaign Against Terror, by Ronald Kessler

With the CIA at the core of the war on terror, no agency is as important to preserving America's freedom. Yet the CIA is a closed and secretive world-impenetrable to generations of journalists-and few Americans know what really goes on among the spy masters who plot America's worldwide campaign against terrorists.

Only Ronald Kessler, an award-winning former Washington Post and Wall Street Journal investigative reporter, could have gained the unprecedented access to tell the story. Kessler interviewed fifty current CIA officers, including all the agency's top officials, and toured areas of the CIA the media has never seen. The agency actively encouraged retired CIA officers and officials to talk with him as well. In six years as director, George J. Tenet has never appeared on TV shows and has given only a handful of print interviews, all before 9/11, but Tenet agreed to be interviewed by Kessler for this book. He spoke candidly and passionately about the events of 9/11, the war on terror, the agency's intelligence on Iraq, and the controversies surrounding the agency.

The CIA at War tells the inside story of how Tenet, a son of Greek immigrants, turned around the CIA from a pathetic, risk averse outfit to one that has rolled up 3,000 terrorists since 9/11, was critically important to winning in Afghanistan and Iraq, and now kills terrorists with its Predator drone aircraft.

The book portrays Tenet as a true American hero, one who overcame every kind of Washington obstacle and the destructive actions of previous director John Deutch to make the agency a success. As Tenet said in a recent speech, "Nowhere in the world could the son of an immigrant stand before you as the director of Central Intelligence. This is simply the greatest country on the face of the earth."

The CIA at War discloses highly sensitive information about the CIA's unorthodox methods and its stunning successes and shocking failures. The book explores whether the CIA can be trusted, whether its intelligence is politicized, and whether it is capable of winning the war on terror. In doing so, the book weaves in the history of the CIA and how it really works. It is the definitive account of the agency.

From the CIA's intelligence failure of 9/11 to its critical role in preventing further attacks, The CIA at War tells a riveting, unique story about a secretive, powerful agency and its confrontation with global terrorism.

From Publishers Weekly
The war on terror is a sideshow to the larger struggle for the CIA's soul in this illuminating but partisan book. Investigative journalist Kessler gives a warts-and-all account of the CIA's checkered past up to the despondent 1990s, when the demise of Communism, official disparagement of human intelligence-gathering in favor of high-tech spying, and humiliations like the Aldrich Ames spy case, left the agency rudderless and demoralized. Kessler ties these lapses to a dysfunctional institutional culture that oscillated, he says, between paranoia and slackness, bureaucratic sclerosis and "cowboy" adventurism, and arrogant unaccountability and prissy human rights regulations. Kessler gives an absorbing and critical, if somewhat rambling, history of the agency and its problems, based on extensive interviews with past and present CIA officials and leavened with intriguing secret-agent lore. But when current CIA director George Tenet-a "gracious" and "politically savvy" leader whose "integrity and outspokenness" started a "healing process" that made the agency "focused, aggressive and effective"-arrives on the scene, Kessler's objectivity departs. He dismisses criticisms of the CIA's pre-Sept. 11 performance and the controversy over intelligence claims about Iraq (Tenet, he huffs, "would never tolerate any attempts to influence the CIA's conclusions"). Instead, Kessler extols the agency's successes in "rolling up" terrorists and laying the clandestine groundwork for the invasion of Iraq, while downplaying awkward loose threads like the failure to find the weapons of mass destruction the CIA insisted were in Iraq. Kessler's uncritical endorsement of Tenet-and of President Bush, another "focused" leader who "gets" intelligence, unlike the inattentive Clinton-lacks the insight displayed in the rest of the book. From Booklist
Kessler takes us from the formation of the CIA as an outgrowth of World War II OSS intelligence activities, when most agents were East Coast Ivy League elites focused on cold war scrimmages, through the current war on terror, where the enemy is often unknown and the agency elite are somewhat more diverse. Through numerous interviews with both agents and operatives, Kessler brings to life a world generally described only in fiction. While providing special insight into CIA successes associated with the post-9/11 war on terror, Kessler also portrays a demoralized agency that lost popular and political support because of its inability to detect traitors within its own ranks. This historically secretive and powerful agency has adjusted to modern warfare by integrating intelligence gathering with field operations. Kessler had unprecedented access to the agency, which is reflected in his up-to-date commentary on the war and administration policy. Vernon Ford

Review

“Colorful and fascinating . . . Kessler's sobering report . . . will come as a surprise to most readers--and possibly even Washington insiders . . . Chilling.” ―The Washington Post Book World

“A compelling and timely exposition of the real FBI. Kessler's fresh information and command of the facts . . . rings with authority.” ―The Los Angeles Times Book Review

“An assiduous journalist, Kessler has written numerous books about behind-the-scenes stories at the national security agencies. His reportage on the abuse of office perks by ex-FBI director William Sessions, for example, precipitated Sessions' exit in 1993. His latest book is a history of the FBI since its origin in 1908 and is structured around directors' tenures . . . Kessler's access to reliable sources results in a richly detailed overview.” ―Gilbert Taylor, Booklist

A Major Disappointment
By A Customer
This book is amazingly shallow, even among its genre of 'instant histories' focusing on the newly energized interest in the CIA post 11 September. More a hagiography of George Tenet than a serious analysis, the author seems to take virtually everything he is told by Tenet and his supporters at face value. What might be worse is that the bulk of the book is filled with a pastiche of rather pointless -- and poorly organized -- historical anecdotes that have nothing to do with the book's purported theme. Readers with an interest in how the CIA actually works and its history should go somewhere else than this book. Even material on the CIA's website itself typically is more nuanced than the treatment here.

CIA at War reviewed
By Gordon W. Sheill
The book was recommended by a high school colleague who worked for the CIA. He said "I don't know his sources but it is the most accurate portrayal of the agency that I have read". I wasn't disappointed. The book came in excellent condition.

You can't afford NOT to read this book
By A Customer
Anyone interested in learning how the CIA operates (and for Americans that should be all of us) will find this book fascinating. Choc-a-bloc with anecdotes and infomation that is both scary and amusing, it's hard to put down. Did you know that former CIA director John Deutch place l7,00, that's right, THOUSAND, CIA files, some of which were classified as top secret on his unclassified home computer? Did you know that since 9/11 certain Arab countries such as Yemen have actively cooperated with the CIA in its' war against al Qaeda? Do you want to know what the CIA is doing to try to insure there is never another 9/11? Do you (as I do) question whether we should have invaded Iraq? Read Kessler's analysis of the information amassed by the CIA demonstrating that Sadam Hussein was concealing a program dedicated to developing weapons of mass destruction and then decide what you think about the decision. Clearly a fan of George Tenet, whose achievements are impressive by any standard, Kessler is nonetheless critical of the CIA in many respects, as well he should be. Don't criticize the CIA without understanding something about it. This book will help you do just that.
