James "Oliver" Cromwell from college to retirement, the novel sometimes reads more like memoir than fiction, but marches smartly up to its dramatic high points. At Notre Dame, Cromwell learns to box well enough to go to the Berlin Olympics in 1936. In World War II, he joins Evans Carlson's famous Raiders and participates in the bold Makin Island Raid, vividly depicted as a near disaster. By 1950 he is a decorated lieutenant colonel, assigned as aide to Ambassador John Muccio in Seoul, South Korea, only days before the North Koreans storm south. Here the novel kicks into high gear, portraying one of the roughest patches in U.S. military history. Through the first summer of hostilities-"the gritty stand at Pusan, the tides at Inchon, the arrogance of demanding Seoul by a date definite"-Cromwell sticks by Muccio as his boss attempts to keep track of a South Korean government that is running away as fast as it can. MacArthur is shown as both a genius and a madman, backed by an army that must relearn the art of war. Through it all, Cromwell's steps are dogged by a former college classmate, Ben Sweet, a conceited war correspondent and novelist who becomes a kind of nagging alter ego. Pour a tall beer and get a bowl of kim chee because . . .

James Brady is taking you back to Korea. This novel is written in a somewhat different style than "Warning of War" and "The Marines of Autumn." It somewhat more folksy with shorter chapters but reads well. It tells the story of a Marine from his formative days as a boxer at Notre Dame to serving in several roles as a lieutenant colonel during the first part of the Korean Conflict. Brady's novels about the Corps always feature some unusual historical elements and this one has more than the others. The main character faces different kinds of issues than the those in the other Brady novels. For example, while his career progresses nicely, ironically it is haunted by serving a span as a young officer in Carlson's Raiders (an elite unit viewed with suspicion by many cadre). The book gives a good feel for the various conflicts it describes and for the career of the bachelor Marine officer.

The Marine

James Brady's novel is a good read. It follows the World War 2 to Korean War fictional career path of a U.S. Marine Colonel named James "Oliver" Cromwell. A military boxing champion, he serves with a marine raider battalion, and later serves as an ambassadors aide; many traditional marine officers view his career with envy and suspicion. Therefore, Colonel Cromwell never realizes a personal goal to command a battalion in combat. The author does not pull his punches in describing the 1942 flawed Makin Island raid by Carlson's Raiders. Brady also ignores political correctness by pointing out the dismal combat record of the Army's 24th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War, "an all black unit with mostly white officers and lousy morale." Brady does error in citing the 4 th Marines "as men who would die" during the infamous World War 2 Bataan Death March. The 4 th Marines were defending Corregidor Island at the time of the Death March. Brady also errors citing Marine paratroopers making a combat jump and "floating down" over Guadalcanal. These marines fought with great valor on Guadalcanal, but "floated in " and hit the beach by boat.

"Smoke if you got 'em . . . "

A central issue to the novelist's tools is that you like the main character. This is nearly a responsibility more than just a style. In fiction, certainly the tale can be told with a main character you wouldn't want go on vacation with. But generally, you should feel some passion about him/her and about the struggles they endeavor to resolve. Not so with Lieutenant Colonel Cromwell.
I have enjoyed many of the Jim Brady books. I thoroughly liked the wry humor and courage and depth and loyalty of Billy Port in "Warning of War," and read the final 25 pages of "The Marines of Autumn" with a lump in my throat recognizing the pain and suffering of Tom Verity and his Marine translators during the breakout from Chosin Reservoir.
I couldn't replicate those feelings for Jim Cromwell. Here was a man about whom an epic could have been written. If there were novels about men at war that we wanted shorther, here was one we clearly wanted stretched. It had all the earmarks of an epic: New York to South Bend to Berlin to Camp Pendleton to Makin to Tarawa to Iwo, then to South Korea.
But instead, Colonel Cromwell is shallow, almost superficial. He has the feelings, he just can't express them. We're not expecting 'it was a dark and stormy night,' but in 20 years he has 3 contacts with women that last less than 2 pages, and his most insightful dialogue about the meaning of what Orwell's 'the hard men' do, is with Gunnery Sergeant Arzt, who, like Cromwell's eventual injuries, dies offstage somewhere with litle pomp nor circumstance.
Overall, it had great potential and I can't help but think it could have been longer and more substantial, instead of leaner and more sparse.
I'll still read Jim Brady; this one fell short of his own standards.

Dad - Please Pass the Bowl of New Mental Models...

I can't wait to read this book. I just sent it to my dad for Father's day. He is a pilot and possibly the most stubborn guy I couldn't imagine not having in my life. This is a book that I know on which we will find common ground. This is a book we can talk about over a holiday meal. This book will save Thanksgiving dinner for years to come!
I have had the honor and pleasure of knowing Susan Edsall, professionally and then personally. Susan has one of the keenest minds I have had the pleasure to be acquainted with. She sees the forest and the tree and will mind you to take time to care for both. She re-opened my eyes to learning again, to break existing mental models I held so dearly, and to see new possibilities. In fact, Susan was absolutely instrumental in my decision to pursue a Public Interest Law Degree at age 38. She does this all with a totally make-sense, can-do, practical approach towards understanding and resolving log jams, paradoxes, and conundrums of all sizes and complexities. She even does it while making you laugh. And by golly, if she can do that for me in my everyday and real life, I simply can't wait to blaze that trail in my relationship I share with my dad - for which I am certain a few mental models we each hold need a little sledge hammering.

Into The Blue

Into The Blue is a very special story with endless ramifications. After a severe debilitating stroke that left Wayne Edsall unable to walk, communicate or read, doctors told his family he'd for sure never fly again.

If you love stories about airplanes, miracles, true grit and determination, a special friendship between two guys and how they talk in real life, gutsy hold-nothing-back relationships, the unflagging human spirit - if you love good writing, you'll love this book.

Wayne's story speaks to the importance of general aviation and how the dream to fly is a dream worth living for.

Family matters

Susan Edsall's last name caught my attention as I listened to her being interviewed on NPR, but it's much more than the name we have in common that has me ordering additional copies of her book for my family and friends. Susan's story is one for all families, a poignant tale of what "family" truly means. I laughed and cried as I read of her family's mission -- and its frequent battles, with itself and with the medical community -- to get her Dad, Wayne Edsall, back into the sky after his stroke.

In I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You: Aretha Franklin, Respect, and the Making of a Soul Music Masterpiece (St. Martin's Griffin, $14.95), music journalist Matt Dobkin describes how that 10th, groundbreaking 1967 album -- which included such iconic songs as "Respect" and "I Never Loved a Man" -- was made. "A brash Jew from the Bronx, a lock-jaw old-money heir, and a southern country boy from Alabama -- these were the figures who ... helped a young girl in her twenties from Detroit, a mother since her teens who hadn't completed high school, become the embodiment of black womanhood." These music professionals -- Franklin's producer at Atlantic Records, the Columbia executive who first "discovered" her and the owner of a tiny studio in Muscle Shoals, Ala. -- helped her move from being "smothered ... under a phalanx of lush strings" to showing "the world that forty-one minutes ... of church-influenced soul music could be [a] lasting work of passion and craftsmanship." But Franklin led the way. One member of the "killer house band of fiercely funky white guys" remembers how she took control: "She kinda looks around, like, Nobody's watchin' me. Flash forward 34 years to journalist Touré's profile of Alicia Keys -- "Neo-Soul's newest princess" -- whose career didn't really take off until she "took the weight of writing and producing on herself." The profile appears in Never Drank the Kool-Aid (Picador, $15), a collection of Touré's profiles and essays. A longtime chronicler of the hip-hop world, Touré (yes, that's his full name) says he never drank the Kool-Aid: "I never bought into the philosophy of the rappers, singers, and celebrities I wrote about. I wasn't there to help extend their brands and the story they were selling. I was there to try to understand who they were beyond the image they want us to think they were." After all, he continues, "journalism is about truth-telling, but when you bring those instincts to the world of Black entertainment you step into a community that's not interested in or prepared for honesty. They don't want to hear the truth about their emperors' wardrobe." Nevertheless, in profiles of Biggie Smalls, Eminem, 50 Cent and many others, Touré tries to bring it home. But it gets complicated. When Tupac Shakur was shot (not, sadly, for the last time) while he was on trial for sexual assault, rumors went around that the police had set it up. Touré wrote an article for the Village Voice -- included here -- suggesting that it was just as likely that Shakur had set himself up: "In theory, and it was just a theory, it seemed plausible: Pac rolled away from the shooting physically unscathed, his reputation for bravery and boldness and badassness maximized. This gave us indisputable proof that he was indeed a modern phoenix, able to survive a rain of bullets." But the rapper told another journalist that when he read the piece, he cried. "I took him at his word and deconstructed his body and his life like they themselves were part of an art show," writes Touré. "But art doesn't cry if it gets a bad review." But sometimes the artist's life is the art. Or the art is what the artist wants his life to be. The subject of Joshua Gamson's The Fabulous Sylvester: The Legend, the Music, the Seventies in San Francisco (Picador, $15) knew he was destined to be famous from his early childhood in South Central Los Angeles. "He seemed to have made a decision very early on that he would be heard. 'If you said no,' his mother said, 'he was determined to let it be yes.'" As a teenager, Sylvester James, Jr., known as Dooni growing up and just Sylvester later on, found his way to the Disquotays, partying drag queens that "were a cross between a street gang and a sorority." And "in a world where 'ridiculous' was the highest of compliments, Miss Dooni was the most ridiculous of them all." He, or she, did become famous, her exuberant style coinciding perfectly with the 1970s. Disco, Sylvester said once, was about how "everyone can be strange and live out their fantasies on the dance floor ... . I've always lived out my fantasies of being whatever I wanted to be." Very good book - Concentrates mostly on music!

Just read this after finding it in the library. The book is mostly about the recording of Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved A Man" single and album. I love hearing the details about recording and music. The author has interviewed several of the original musicians, Jerry Wexler and even Ted White (Franklin's ex-husband).

The book doesn't try to make anyone out to be totally bad. I was impressed by the author's take on Ted White, not totally making him out to be the evil guy everyone said he was. I'm not saying he was perfect, just human with flaws.

There is a chapter on the so-called trouble that went along with the session. Just about everyone has had their say on what happened almost 40 years ago. The author wisely collects several different accounts and doesn't try to definitively define what happened.

I wish more people would write books about the music, rather than deal with the tabloid details of an artist's life. I understand that a person's personal life is woven into their life as an artist and I believe that the author balanaces out both in discussing Aretha Franklin, her life and music.

I thought is was very interesting to read about Franklin's musical influences. If you have never listened to Dinah Washington, you should check her out and hear how she influenced Aretha Franklin.

For music fans, this is a good read. Let's have more books like this regarding Motown and other soul music!

I Need Aretha

If there is anything that remains constant in my life, it is knowing that Aretha Franklin is a sister spirit and that her voice can help to calm me in the most torrential times. It seems that when I listen to Aretha she is speaking directly to me, telling me she knows what I am going through and that everything will turn out fine. Matt Dobkin revisits the recording of a 1967 album that shot Aretha Franklin to the highest level of stardom and changed the voice of soul music forever and changed my life forever.

I NEVER LOVED A MAN THE WAY I LOVE YOU is not just a biography. Instead, it is a detailed analysis of Aretha's rise to superstardom and the recording sessions during what some would argue is Aretha's finest hour. Dobkin interviewed many of the direct participants of the recording of I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You to inject the history needed to make telling this story a success. However, he also included thoughts from the great poet Nikki Giovanni (her descriptions of both Aretha's presence and the tumultuous era in question were remarkable) and other contemporaries of the Queen of Soul for added context.

The album, I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You, included such cuts as "Do Right Woman," "Save Me," "Dr. Feelgood," (one of my favorite Aretha songs) and the female anthem, "Respect," an Otis Redding song that Aretha covered and made her own. But, as Dobkin seems to relay, one of the most important aspects of this recording was that it was interracial; most of the musicians on the album were young white men from Muscle Shoals, Alabama or neighboring cities. Dobkin also notes that the musical process that was utilized on this album (Aretha at the piano, leading the show) would become her M.O. for making music from that day forward.

Aretha has numerous albums to her credit, ranging from a Dinah Washington tribute album, recorded during her stint at Columbia Records, to the Atlantic Records late-sixties masterpiece that is the focus of this book. Dobkin seemed to know what he was talking about when retelling the story of the album's birth, and he provided much needed groundwork to help the reader understand just how important that album was in 1967 and still is today. I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You ushered in the reign of the Queen of Soul and widely introduced this timeless voice to the favorites list of music lovers worldwide. Dobkin gave Aretha her demanded Respect and took it a step further by praising her musical virtuosity.

The stories behind the making of Respect, Dr. Feelgood, and I Never Loved a Man

"I Never Loved a Man" is a music journalist's take on Aretha Franklin's groundbreaking album. Dobkin comes from a background in opera writing, and he writes with great appreciation and sensitivity about the music. You can tell that he enjoys listening to the music and trying to conquer the challenging task of describing tones with prose. He also interviews some of the key figures in the story such as Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, Aretha's ex-husband, Ahmet Ertegun, and many of the key performers on the album. He takes an informal tone at times with his interviewees and tries to go beyond reporting their reflections on the album and treating them as characters in themselves. Those interested in Jerry Wexler, the executive at Atlantic who produced the sessions, will gain from his perspective and the musicians' responses to hearing about Jerry Wexler.

I do differ with some of this author's interpretations. He seems to feel that Muscle Shoals' FAME Studios was a critical part of this album's sound. Dobson takes great pains early on in the book to stress the "three white men" who played important roles in making this music happen. In many cases, such as Wilson Pickett's work for Atlantic, Muscle Shoals and its integrated country influenced soul did provided a core studio sound. Yes, the musicians added key riffs to the tunes. Reading into some of the details of this book, however, we see that in many ways Aretha and her husband were key catalysts in radically altering the relationship between Jerry Wexler's Atlantic Records and FAME Studios. Dobkin does a good job of talking about "the incident" where the racial tensions between an all-white studio band and a redneck trumpet player lead to conflict and a fight with Aretha's husband. That led to an integrated band and a plot to steal FAME's musicians for Atlantic in the New York sessions that were later held to finish the album.

Regardless, Aretha would have made this kind of music with anyone. It's her church, her Dinah Washington, and her Clara Ward and the fire within her bones coming out at one time. I firmly believe that Aretha Franklin was a force of nature in the studio, and she, unlike other vocalists such as Diana Ross, would have achieved greatness with any quality studio support. She would have been Aretha at Stax or even RCA as long as the producer was smart enough to be like Jerry Wexler and largely get out of her freakishly gifted way. In many ways, the most feminist thing about these sides is that these are early examples of a woman producing herself in a male-dominated industry and then hitting a home-run with overwhelming chart-topping success. Unfortunately, Aretha did not have the business sense to carve out producer or co-producer credit for her efforts in bandleading and directing musicians until later on in her career.

Nikki Giovanni is a key voice in this book as well. For those who see her solely as "that black feminist poet", it's fun to see her as just a fan of the Queen of Soul.

Dobkin sums up his agenda early on in the book: to provide a snapshot of what Aretha when she was crowned Queen of Soul at Atlantic. Minor complaints aside, he does an excellent job providing a lasting testimony to a great vocalist, artist, and symbol of soul power. Here's hoping that Aretha opens up a little as she enters her twilight years and improves on her biography or a biographer can do justice to the full scope of her life. Until then, books like "I Never Loved a Man" will provide great insight into the nature of her gift.

The United States, after much vacillation, finally elected to help Israel, beginning a tremendous airlift (code name: Operation Nickel Grass) which incurred the wrath of the Arab states, and their sponsor, the Soviet Union.

Fortunately the airlift came just in time for Israeli ground forces to stabilize their positions and eventually turn the tide in the Sinai and Golan Heights. And it was all made possible by an operation that dwarfed the Berlin Airlift and the Soviets' simultaneous efforts in Egypt and Syria.

The Two O'Clock War is bound to become the definitive history of a war that quite literally approached Armageddon.

Fast Paced and Politically Insightful

I just finished reading "The Two O'Clock War." I enjoyed the "behind the scenes" coverage of the mighty US Air Lift that enabled Israel to continue in the fight to secure a place at the negotiating table when the tank cannons would be silenced on the Golan and in the Sinai! I learned a lot about Kissinger, Nixon and the US's attitude toward the "Oil Weapon" as it relates to Israel. I also chuckled over the author's seemingly anti-Sharon stance all throughout the book! Though the author has little to praise "Arik" Sharon for, he concludes with the statement that Sharon is the kinda guy you want fighting with you and not against you. It is kinda a "can't live with em...can't live without em..." situation. The book is worth the read and the Epilouge itself is worth the price of the book. I thought that Boyne made too much about the US going to DEFCON III. It seemed a bit over the top! Buy it, read it, learn from it! Four Stars (He could have had much more about the US Airlift from the perspective of the USAF).

Yom Kippur War Review

This book explained in great detail the events that took place in Israel's 1973 war. From the date and time of every skirmish to the name of every war machine, Walter Boyne accounts for every part of this war. I thought at some parts that the book was just fact after fact and it began to get a bit dry but I do appreciate just how much detail was included. The book includes a few pages of pictures showing key people, key events and multiple aircraft. This book showed how the extent of the United States willingness to provide Israel with supplies and the rising tensions between the two major superpowers of the Cold war. My knowledge of the Yom Kippur War has increased immensely. I have a greater understanding of how both sides were so well equipped to fight a war. I now realize the importance of the US airlift and how Israel might not even be a country to this day if we didn't intervene. With Israeli border disputes being a current event, I thought it was interesting seeing how some of these conflicts continue to effect the world today. I don't think that this was the most interesting read, but I do respect the historical accuracy it provided.

False Premise

Obviously the airlift helped and facilitated the Israeli counterattack (allowing greater freedom to plan military strikes), but the reason for Israel surviving the war were: 1) poor strategic planning by the Arab armies AFTER the war had started (up til that point, they demonstrated brilliant planning) and a misreading of the situation on the battlefield 2) surprising tenacity on the part of the Israeli forces, although they were clearly ill-prepared for the well-coordinated attack and 3) Syria urging Egypt to abandon what, 'til then, was an effective battle plan. If it weren't for these three facts, then the war would have taken a very different course and surely the US airlift would have been a lifesaver.

Among the highlights: with pumps not working, the New York City subways would fill with water within days, while weeds and then trees would retake the buckled streets and wild predators would ravage the domesticated dogs. Texas’s unattended petrochemical complexes might ignite, scattering hydrogen cyanide to the winds—a "mini chemical nuclear winter." After thousands of years, the Chunnel, rubber tires, and more than a billion tons of plastic might remain, but eventually a polymer-eating microbe could evolve, and, with the spectacular return of fish and bird populations, the earth might revert to Eden.

Perhaps operating on the assumption that he won't be around, Alan Weisman gets a head start on measuring the global human footprint. Although he doesn't intend The World Without Us to be an explicitly environmental work, the specter of global warming hangs over the book like a heavy toxic cloud. Some reviewers wonder whether all the doom and gloom is necessary: Why investigate a question that skirts the underlying cause of the problem? That said, Weisman, a professor at the University of Arizona, has done his research and collected a wide range of data to support his findings, which he delivers in graceful, entertaining prose. We think Michael Grunwald's review in the Washington Post sums it up nicely: sure the book's trivia. Quite a few of us like that.

Back to the Garden of Eden

This is a charming book on a macabre subject: if every person on earth died tomorrow what would happen to the works of man? Using New York as an example the author details the slow, inevitable destruction of the subways, bridges, buildings, the return of the forests and the animals, and the disposition of those things that never seem to go away: poisonous heavy metals, plastic, and radioactive waste.

He also describes the decay of man-made works in other parts of the world, including a vivid description of what would happen to an oil field in Texas if humans suddenly disappeared. That would be hell in the short term -- but some of the speculations about earth without humans sound pretty attractive: back to the Garden of Eden, before Adam, Eve, and the snake.

The book is a cautionary one, telling about the fate of earlier societies who outran the potential for their environment, and taking the long view of the human species -- up till and including the final demise when the sun becomes a big cinder about 5 billion years for now. Will the last work of man to survive be a plastic water bottle? An amusing section gives a voice to the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement -- which proposes that human beings help themselves become extinct. Another describes the Pioneer spacecraft, sent out to hunt for other forms of intelligent life in the Universe. All that other civilizations may know of us is contained on the spacecraft: Mozart, Chuck Berry, and a few other details, to be precise.

It's a fascinating read of well-reasoned speculation.

Excellent, intriguing look at world without humans. Also, if you like post-apocalyptic books

Basically, this focuses on a "what if" situation: what if something, be it the bird flu, a new virus or (fill in the blanks) destroyed all the people on Earth? What then? What would happen to our world, without us in it?

Using a combination of very solid research and science, the author gives readers a view of what would -and would not - endure -and for how long. He gives a look at the world shortly after we leave and then a futuristic look at its evolution from there, with various scenarios. I found it riveting to read. Also, it made me realize that, as important as we may consider ourselves, the earth could evolve and change without us, often in positive ways. It was humbling, at least for me.

Finally, the writer's style is just breathtaking. I can't sum it up here (it'd be like trying to describe a painting instead of seeing it firsthand) but the writing makes the book extremely rewarding. I'd have gotten through it, even if written by a less competent writer, because I find the subject matter inherently fascinating, but I'm grateful that this was so nicely done.

Could have been better

I've always found this topic interesting, so when I heard that this book was coming out I rang the bookshop straight away and reserved a copy. Finding old ruins or remains in the bush fascinates me; an old fence running straight through thick scrub, or an abandoned railway cutting with trees growing through it. "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!" After finishing the book though, I can't say I would go out of my way to recommend it. It's not bad.. just disappointing. The topic holds a lot of promise; this book just doesn't deliver.

The foundations are all there; the topic is novel and the amount of research the author has done and the creative thinking used should have provided more than enough material for an interesting book.

I think the problem is with the writing. The approach taken is very similar to that seen in Jared Diamond's books; in each chapter, introduce a different place in the world, discuss it's specific situation or history, then draw out a more general conclusion from the more specific situation. It's worked for Jared Diamond, but it doesn't work here. The problem is that in many chapters the author does too good a job of concealing what general point he is trying to make; several times I found myself thinking "This is a moderately interesting story... but what does it have to do with the topic of the book?" After finishing some chapters I found I still wasn't sure!

The writing style also grates. He uses a kind of journalistic, "reporter on the scene" approach. "Jim swivelled clockwise in his chair, as he revealed the true reason behind the drop in pH in the pacific's coral atolls!". There is a perplexing amount of fluff regarding scientist's hairstyles, what they're wearing, where they went to school and other filler. I guess the idea is to do the "popular science" "let's make science relevant to the common man" thing; by fleshing out the otherwise faceless scientists with details of their lives and personalities. Boring. If the science itself isn't interesting, don't expect the scientists to make up for it!

I also thought there could have been a lot more science in this book. There is a fair bit, but it's often just mentioned in passing and not explained in any detail. With the general style of the book, I guess maybe they didn't want to make it too "technical". The end result is that unless you have a fairly broad scientific education (I do) you are going to struggle to understand any of the brief explanations for phenomena described in the book. I often found myself wishing for a whole extra paragraph of explanation on the scientific aspects.

Instead we get more of a focus on philosophy, big picture musings and what I would call "poetic" writing. It didn't work for me.

There is also two quite different themes dealt with by this book: what will happen to our civilisation's artefacts (buildings, monuments, waste etc) after we are gone, and what will happen to the natural world after we are gone. Switching between the two gives a lack of focus.

I do hope Weisman writes more books. Writing style can always be improved (just write more books!), but imagination and insight can't be fashioned so easily. The author is an imaginative thinker, and reading more from him would be interesting.

After the epic battle of Saratoga (see SARATOGA) the rebel colonists capture many British soldiers from His Majesty's 24th Foot regiment including Captain Jamie Skoyles. However with the help of fellow prisoner of war Sergeant Tom Caffrey, they escape from their Cambridge jail. James picks up his frightened girlfriend Elizabeth Rainham and they head to the British controlled stronghold of Philadelphia. Already feeling sympathetic towards the American cause, James cannot help but compare General George Washington and his intrepid but unprepared for the winter angry and despondent Continental Army housed nearby in Valley Forge to the pompous arrogant British leader General William Howe who enjoys the fruit of the city.

Howe becomes irate that this ragtag insurgent force still survives so he decides he needs an insider to provide him with more information. He chooses Jamie to spy on Washington to learn how to destroy the insurgency. Jamie succeeds in getting inside Washington's inner circle, but feels guilty that he is either betraying the intrepid rebel leader and his valid cause, his country, or both.

Because of the depth of detail that vividly provides the audience with insight into the living conditions of the two fighting forces during the winter of 77 and 78, VALLEY FORGE will take some time to read, but worth doing as the tale provides a powerful look at the comparative environments grip readers. Though James is accepted to easily by the American leadership especially Washington, this is a key element enabling the reader to understand the internal conflict of many people during the American Revolution. David Garland has provided a well written action-packed story line that is not fast-paced as two armies bunker down for the winter.

A pleasurable read with interesting characters and understated humor

Young state policeman Sam Neely has been assigned to the tiny village of Eden (population: 47) where he fears he will go mad with boredom. But he never gets that opportunity, because things start happening immediately.

Eden banker Ed Harris arrives home unexpectedly to find his best friend, Hayden Elkins, in bed with Ed's wife, Anne. With a gun pointed at them, Ed orders Anne to pack her belongings. Anne, he announces, will now live with Hayden, who will treat her as a wife. When Hayden reminds Ed that he already has a wife, Ed replies that now he has two. Ed orders Hayden to make Anne happy. And so the couple head home to Hayden's wife, Matilda, who faints when she hears the news.

The town is abuzz with the news of Hayden and his two wives. Some of the more upright women approach Trooper Neely to swear out a complaint of bigamy against Hayden, and a complaint of felony menacing against gun-toting Ed. Neely must investigate. When Neely interviews Anne, she blithely divulges how she and Matilda plan to divide their wifely duties, with Matilda doing the housework, Anne washing the windows, and so on.

That is just the beginning of the happenings in Eden, the young policeman discovers. There's gorgeous Crystal Ice, with whom Neely falls madly in love. There's also a young retarded Peeping Tom, a wealthy author who has escaped from city life, and a deputy sheriff who has quite the photo collection. And then there's the comely woman preacher, who has an amazing secret.

As one might expect from the author's name, the book is written under a pseudonym, which drove me into a frenzy of deciding on the identity of the writer. After some research, I discovered I was way off on my guess of the author ("Eve Adams" is the pseudonym for bestselling thriller writer Stephen Coonts --- who would have guessed??) The book reminds me very much of the Mitford series by Jan Karon, although THE GARDEN OF EDEN is a bit racier. Like the Mitford stories, the characters' lives fit together in a pleasing manner, which is very satisfying and uplifting. Besides the interesting characters, a decidedly Southern backdrop, plenty of understated humor, and a lively pace make this a pleasurable read.

I have one small quibble: all the women of note are extraordinarily gorgeous goddesses. Descriptions of these beauteous lasses wore thin rapidly, and made the characters seem less real. Despite this minor drawback, I thoroughly enjoyed losing myself in THE GARDEN OF EDEN.

I just plain enjoyed this book! It doesn't fit any genre...not a 'mystery', not a 'thriller', etc. Just tells a story about folks living a not quite ordinary life.The characters were likeable. Kind of like hearing the local 'gossip' from your best friend. Rules were bent at appropriate times. People got what was coming to them. And the main story had a happy ending. My only complaint is there were too many questions left unanswered....too many stories that were not ended. Maybe a little too 'real life' in that respect. For example, did the author find his 'true love'? What happens with the town drunk and the widow next door? What do the 'kids' do after HS graduation.....does college end their relationship? I enjoyed the book....but it left me wanting more!
