The Gates of Africa: Death, Discovery, and the Search for Timbuktu, by Anthony Sattin

London, 1788: a group of British gentlemen---geographers, scholars, politicians, humanitarians, and traders---decide it is time to solve the mysteries of Africa's unknown interior regions. Inspired by the Enlightenment quest for knowledge, they consider it a slur on the age that the interior of Africa still remains a mystery, that maps of the "dark continent" are populated with mythical beasts, imaginary landmarks, and fabled empires. As well, they hoped that more accurate knowledge of Africa would aid in the abolition of the slave trade.

These men, a mixed group of soldiers and gentlemen, ex-convicts, and social outcasts, form the African Association, the world's first geographical society, and over several decades send hardened, grizzled adventurers to replace speculation with facts and remove the beasts from the maps. The explorers who ventured forth included Mungo Park, whose account of his travels would be a bestseller for more than a century; American John Ledyard; and Jean Louis Burckhardt, the discoverer of Petra and Abu Simbel. Their exploits would include grueling crossings of the Sahara, the exploration of the Nile, and---most dramatically---the search for the great River Niger and its legendary city of gold: Timbuktu.

Anthony Sattin weaves the plotting of the London gentlemen and the experiences of their extraordinary explorers into a gripping account of high adventure, international intrigue, and geographical discovery. The Gates of Africa is a story of human courage and fatal ambition, a groundbreaking insight into the struggle to reveal the secrets of Africa.

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist and travel writer Sattin (The Pharaoh's Shadow, etc.) pens a remarkable history of the African Association, the world's first geographical society. Formed in London in 1788 by wealthy patrons who believed that Africa needed to be explored and mapped more fully, the Association aimed to find the fabled city of Timbuktu, discover the course of the Niger and locate the source of the Nile. Using a wealth of historical and biographical materials, Sattin provides exciting-and sometimes ironic-accounts of the amazing and often doomed travels of extraordinary adventurers supported by the Association, including Mungo Park, the first European to find the Niger; Gordon Laing, who reached Timbuktu after being shot by a local tribesman only to find that the city was in shambles; and Jean Louis Burckhardt, who became fluent in Arabic and who, disguised as Ibrahim ibn Abdullah, became one of the first Europeans to journey to Mecca and the first since the Crusades to see the ancient city of Petra. Sattin delivers a lively and fascinating study of the Association, about which little has been previously written, and shows how the achievements of the men and their missions not only expanded the knowledge of Africa, but also left a "lasting legacy" in the fields of exploration and geographical investigation.

From Booklist
As the predecessor of the distinguished and internationally renowned Royal Geographic Society, the African Association's significance has been minimized in the annals of African exploration and geography. Founded in 1788 by a handful of scientists, explorers, and entrepreneurs, the African Association was responsible for commissioning expeditions to investigate heretofore-uncharted sectors of the African interior. This fascinating narrative reaches back in time, breathing new life into the forward-thinking men who established the association and the intrepid adventurers who undertook a series of dangerous, exhilarating missions in the name of progress. As an interesting sidebar, the African Association's staunch opposition to the slave trade is also documented. Historians, geographers, and armchair travelers will be captivated by this irresistible combination of adventure, intrigue, and heroism. Margaret Flanagan

Exploration of Africa in the late 18th and early 19th century
By Utah Blaine
It may be surprising to some (it was certainly surprising to me) that less was known about the interior of Africa at the turn of the 18th century than was known about the New World or the South Pacific. The coast around Africa had been heavily explored (and exploited) by Europeans, but virtually nothing was known about the interior. This book details the attempts by individuals and small groups to penetrate, map, and detail truth from reality about the interior of Africa during the late 18th and early 18th century. Various scholars, adventure seekers, and glory hunters tried to cross the Sahara and penetrate northern Africa to find the legendary city of Timbuktu, the source of the Niger, and new possibilities for trade to bypass the Moorish middlemen. Some tried by starting in Egypt and heading west, others by starting in (or around) Gambia and trekking east. Virtually all of them died in the attempt.

There is a lot to like in this book. It uncovers a fascinating and totally unknown (to me at least, probably to many others) era of history. While Bonaparte was stomping around Europe, a small group of scholars was actively engaged in trying to learn more about their world, in spite of the upheaval in Europe. Joseph Banks and some of his wealthy comrades in England would regularly commission various individuals and groups to attempt to penetrate Africa to find Timbuktu and the source of the Niger. The goals were nominally scientific - to ascertain the position of various landmarks, rumored cities, etc., but as the expeditions failed and the situation in Europe changed, the goals evolved to become more economic and geo-political. Roughly 40% of this book is effectively a travelogue in which the exploits of the various explorers is recounted. In some cases the journals of these explorers has survived and Sattin has reconstructed the tales of their adventures. It would have taken some big cojones to attempt what some of these brave (foolish?) men did.

There are several reasons why I only give this work four stars. First, roughly 60% of the book covers the political machinations of Joseph Banks and his cronies. This is important to the story, but I wanted to read more about Africa, not about wealthy Londoners. Too much time is spent in London. I wanted to learn more about the explorers, the people and wildlife and terrain in Africa, etc. and less about Banks and crew. Second, this isn't the kind of book most people are going to need to add to their collection. It is now out of print as I write this review (26JUL09), but I wouldn't spend my money again to buy it. Definitely readable, but as a relatively expensive hardback, not really collectible. I won't be returning to it again and again. Third, the ending is really disappointing. Someone finally makes it across the country, and that's it. There were lots of loose threads that could really have been tied up together, and the narrative could have been taken a bit further. It was almost as if Sattin just got tired of writing and ended the story at a convenient point.

Bottom line is that this is a good read for anyone interested in Africa and the age of exploration, but not a uniquely outstanding book.

A lively and engrossing atmosphere of adventure & discovery
By Midwest Book Review
In 1899 in London a group of geographers, scholars, and traders decided it was time to solve Africa's mysteries: they formed the African Association, the world's first geographical society, and several over decades sent adventurers to explore the 'dark continent'. These early adventurers were to change the image and shape of Africa, and Anthony Sattin describes their journeys of adventure in The Gates Of Africa, lending a lively and engrossing atmosphere of adventure and discovery to the account. Sattin is a journalist and broadcaster who himself has traveled extensively over the region in which the early African Association operated: his personal familiarity with the area lends Gates Of Africa an additional air of authority.

More death than discovery
By Roman Nies
This book makes a good compilation of the exploration efforts to find a way to Timbuktu, elucidate the geographic realities in Western Africa with the three big rivers Gambia, Senegal and first of all the Niger. This is also the story of the African Association and the biographies of some courageous and gifted men who did not fear death to make an achievement that must deem as under-ambitious today, but would have secured them imperishable fame and place in the annals of the discoveries of the world. Instead most of them didn`t even make it to a burial in Westminster Abbey, rather in an unknown sand pit.
The author knows to develop entertaining excitement, but apparently failed to keep to it all the end, loosing the last breath to write down what and who finally brought the knowledge the explorers in West Africa were out for. For the successful explorers the author has only a few pages left. Maybe he felt it was time to finish the report. Caillié, who was the first to make it to Timbuktu and back to tell his story, was not commissioned by the African Association. Notwithstanding he should have been honoured with a little more observance.
North Africa and the greatest part of the West was muslim country. The Arabs dominated the trade and kept the black Africans under the threat of their slavery marketing. Their manners were mostly not at all civilized which made travelling for western people, notably Christians a risky affair.
Interestingly the author states on the last pages as for the difficulties of the explorers in obtaining the aimed for goals in 30 and more years of trials, that the greatest obstacles over the course of several missions and several deaths had proved to be neither climate, nor black natives nor even disease, no, it were the Moors, Muslims all, and Arab intermediaries between Europe and black Africa. But this idea came to the reader already long before the author mentioned it. So long is the list of the mistreatments by the rulers and controllers of the area. Muslims treated foreign travellers, especially suspected Christians between the Atlantic ocean and the Red sea, between the Gulf of Benin and the Mediterranean Sea not friendly, as the legend often tells, but regularly hostile, with a few exceptions. Either their company could not be trusted, so that caravans must be avoided by the explorers or journeys postponed, or they started from the beginning of the encounter to show how they wanted to deal with the Christians. Not amusing or healthy. Thus this forced the later travellers to learn fluent Arabic, disguise themselves as muslim traders or pilgrims. But even then they lost their lives after a always bewildering long ordeal of travel or hold out. The hardships over years can not be relived, even not - I presume - in an Egyptian or west-African prison of today. The travelling conditions of the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century in Africa cannot in the least be compared to that what we find today, even if we prefer to do it the camel way.
This book is also a homage to the African Association which made great advances in geography, launched some of the first truly scientific geographical expeditions, established a model for the Romantic explorer, paved the way for new commercial ties and helped create what remains one of the world`s foremost societies for geography and exploration. The great age of African exploration may have peaked in the second half of the nineteenth century, but it began in June 1788, when Sir Joseph Banks and the other members of the Saturday`s Club sat down to dinner at the St. Alban`s Tavernt.
For all who want to revive imaginative the exploration of Western Africa and want to make their own special way to Timbuktu this book should be the right introduction.

From Publishers Weekly
King's previous book, Kathleen's Bake Shop Cookbook, is one of the most solid baking books out there; its no-frills—and no-fail—recipes were inspired by the mouthwatering fare served at the author's old Southampton, N.Y., bakery, Kathleen's Bake Shop. Now that King has moved on to Tate's Bake Shop, the treats she's whipping up haven't much changed, as the 100 recipes in this solid work demonstrate. The two books have a lot in common (including identical subtitles); standards like Orange–Poppy Seed Muffins, Ginger Hearts, Chocolate-Chip Cookies and Peanut Butter Squares appear in both. This new work includes some slightly fancier recipes, like Nutella Shortbread Sandwich Cookies, Warm Individual Chocolate Cakes, Mocha Pecan Muffins and Fresh Blueberry and White Chocolate Tart. Of course, simplicity is paramount: "All the recipes in this book should take less time to make than it would to go to a store to buy a commercially prepared baked good," King says. Her fans have come to rely on her standards, and for the most part, that's what they'll get: Lemon Pound Cake, Raspberry Squares and Old-Fashioned Soft Sugar Cookies are exactly the sort of time-tested delights King's loyal customers clamor for. Fantastic book
By Andrew'sMom
For someone who isn't privy to her first book, this book is fantastic. For someone who has eaten the Tate's chocolate chip cookie - this recipe in the book tastes exactly the same - although with my oven I have to cook the cookies about 13 1/2 minutes to obtain the "crispy" cookie like the Tate cookie. I followed her instructions to the letter, didn't overmix, used my Silpat - and they are amazing. I had only one small cookie because I'm low carbing - but this morning - there are only a few left - meaning my husband and son ate them up! Great book - highly recommend.

Don't Expect Bakery Quality Treats
By Lynne Batlan Levine
Having had the delicious chocolate chip cookies from Tate's Bake Shop, I was thrilled to finally have the recipe! As soon as I recieved the book I made the cookies. Let me tell you, they are OK, but taste nothing like the cookies from the bakery.

Also, some ingredients are clearly left out of some of the recipes (ex pecan cookies don't list pecans as one of the ingredients).

I am giving 3 stars in the hopes that some of the other recipes fair better than the cookies.

Great Recipes Marred By Poor Editing
By Cookie MOnster
The recipes have all been tested in Tate's Bake Shop over the years and are great. Unfortunately, the book has been badly edited. Recipes may be missing an ingredient (Toffee Pecan cookies don't tell you the quantity of pecans required---it's one cup, chopped), boilerplate lines sometimes appear inappropriately ("grease and flour two baking sheets" where only one is required, etc.).

But it's worth struggling through. And call Tate's Bake Shop if you need help.

Every Contact Leaves a Trace: Crime Scene Experts Talk About Their Work from Discovery Through Verdict, by Connie Fletcher

Real crime scene investigation is vastly more complicated, arduous, bizarre, and fascinating than TV's streamlined versions.  Most people who work actual investigations will tell you that the science never lies -- but people can. They may also contaminate evidence, or not know what to look for in crime scenes that typically are far more chaotic and confusing, whether inside or outside, than on TV.
Forensic experts will tell you that the most important person entering a scene is the very first responding officer - the chain of evidence starts with this officer and holds or breaks according to what gets stepped on, or over, collected or contaminated, looked past, or looked over, from every person who enters or interprets the scene, all the way through the crime lab and trial.  And forensic experts will tell you the success of a case can depend on any one expert's knowledge of quirky things, such as:
"The Rule of the First Victim": (the first victim of a criminal usually lives near the criminal's home) Criminals' snacking habits at the scene"Nature's Evidence Technicians," the birds and rodents that hide bits of bone, jewelry, and fabric in their nestsThe botanical evidence found in criminals' pants cuffs Baseball caps as prime DNA repositoriesThe tales told by the application of physics to falling blood drops.      Forensic experts talk about their expertise and their cases here.  They also talk about themselves, their reactions to the horrors they witness, and their love of the work.  For example, a DNA analyst talks about how she drives her family crazy by buccal-swabbing them all at Thanksgiving dinner.  A latent print examiner talks about how he examines cubes of Jell-O at any buffet he goes to for tell-tale prints.  A crime scene investigator gives his tips on clearing a scene of cops: he slaps "Bio-hazard" and "Cancer Causing Agent" stickers on his equipment.  And an evidence technician talks about how hard it is to go to sleep after processing a scene, re-living what you've just witnessed, your mind going a hundred miles an hour.
This is a world that TV crime shows can't touch.  Here are eighty experts - including beat cops, evidence technicians, detectives, forensic anthropologists, blood spatter experts, DNA analysts, latent print examiners, firearms experts, trace analysts, crime lab directors, and prosecution and defense attorneys - speaking in their own words about what they've seen and what they've learned to journalist Connie Fletcher, who has gotten cops to talk freely in her bestsellers What Cops Know,  Pure Cop, and Breaking and Entering.   Every Contact Leaves A Trace presents the science, the human drama, and even the black comedy of crime scene investigation.
Let the experts take you into their world. This is their book - their words, their knowledge, their stories.  Through it all, one Sherlock Holmesian premise unites what they do and what it does to them: Every contact leaves a trace.

Fletcher adopts the same approach to the world of CSI that she previously used with success in What Cops Know. Excerpts from more than 80 interviews with experts at various stages of the criminal justice process, including some well-known names, such as Dr. Henry Lee and Blue Blood's Ed Conlon, acquaint the uninitiated reader with the vast differences between television and reality. Ultra–high tech isn't always necessary for crime solving, Fletcher shows; qualified forensic scientists can make a big difference in the search for justice even in small communities with limited resources. Many of those she spoke with express chagrin that the popular fiction TV series has given the public a false impression of the resources available to the average police force and the pace at which the analyses of DNA or trace evidence occur. One especially well-crafted section contrasts the efforts to identify 9/11 victims with a small Midwestern town's search for the killer of a young girl. Some of the entries are a little skimpy, but readers will be drawn in to the longer excerpts and the basics of how crime scene evidence is examined. (Aug.)

From Booklist
In her fifth book, Fletcher returns to territory she first wrote about in What Cops Know (1991), an intimate oral history that shines the spotlight on the work of the men and women of the Chicago Police Department. Law-enforcement personnel are an integral part of this book, too, but while widening her purview from Chicago to the entire U.S., Fletcher has narrowed her focus to the management of trace evidence--from crime scene to lab to courtroom. A brief introduction heads each of the topically organized chapters, which comprise smoothly edited comments, ranging from a paragraph to a page, contributed by police, DNA analysts, crime-scene reconstructionists, and other forensic specialists. Filled with gruesome, tragic, fascinating, and sometimes even strangely funny details, the speakers' testimonies seek to blunt the horrors they observe every day. The responsibilities and the challenges of the work come clear, as does the supreme irony that scientific advances during the last decade, the proof that "every contact leaves a trace," have made catching criminals both easier and more difficult. Contributors are identified at the back of the book. Stephanie Zvirin

This book is the same as "Crime Scene: Inside The World..."

A note to anyone that is a fan of Fletcher's books. This text is the same as another book: (published the same year in paperback version) "Crime Scene: Inside The World of the Real CSIs."

Interesting potpourri of bits about forensics
By Jerry Saperstein
This is a collection of excerpts from interviews with more than 80 police officers, homicide investigators, prosecutors, defense attorneys and, most importantly, criminal forensics technicians and scientists.

There is no "story" here, no unifying theme or grand scheme. It's just bits and pieces about the underlying premise that every contact at a crime scene leaves a trace of itself. Broken into nine chapters, the book covers crime scene processing, crime scene interpretation, trace evidence, evidence from bodies, DNA, what goes on in the crime lab, the reality of cold cases and the rigors of tesifying at trials.

In a way, the treatment is almost too light, not really providing detailed information about the various forensic disciplines examined. However, that may be a blessing since many of the disciplines are very, very complex.

Instead, Fletcher allows the real-life players to talk about their work, how it fits into the criminal justice process and their own feelings about being confronted with death and mayhem. Some of the interviewees were apparently not very articulate and the excerpts could have benefited from some editing.

On the whole, Fletcher provides a solid overview of forensics in the real world and demolishes without trying the myths perpetuated by CSI and other television concoctions.

STILL Worth Reading
By Tom Gregg
It's a truism in the publishing field that highly technical books--say, computers, medicine, or engineering--are often obsolete before they hit the bookstore shelves. And nearly a decade after its printing, certainly parts of this oral history of numerous crime detection specialists must be technically outdated. The DNA material particularly. Plus as several reviewers rightly note here, there's precious little narrative flow or continuity, but rather a choppy string of two- to five-page vignettes. It's as episodic as a diary. Which is a problem if, as many readers do, you insist on a more conventional presentation.

So why bother reading, now? I'm probably not alone in wishing I could sit down in a cop bar with the regulars sometime and listen to a bunch of their authentic, unfiltered-by-media war stories, funny, tragic, and inspiring. Since cops are notoriously clannish, that's unlikely to ever happen. Consequently, this book works for me in that respect. And there's another reason why I liked it so much, which didn't dawn on me until about five pages before the end: 99% of the time in this chronicle of the war against crime, the good guys win. Occasionally it takes some time, or even a whole lot of time. In one extraordinary L.A. cop-killer case, forty-five years passed before they nabbed the perp on the opposite coast in South Carolina. Even with the presumably more limited DNA expertise of 2006, the chance to bring criminals to justice was lapsing only with their death.

That's kind of comforting. And it's reassuring too to think that there are a lot of smart, tough, hard-working, and honest people out there in law enforcement. In 2006 as per this book, probably still today, and ten more years from now.

Blacktop Cowboys: Riders on the Run for Rodeo Gold, by Ty Phillips

Blacktop Cowboys chronicles the 2004 rodeo season through the eyes of several steer wrestlers trying to make it back to rodeo's version of the Super Bowl, the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas.
Steer wrestling is an adventure that entails riding into an arena at 25 mph, sliding off a horse while taking hold of a 500-pound steer, and then throwing the animal to the ground. The best cowboys often accomplish all this in less than four seconds. The two main characters of Blacktop Cowboys are Luke Branquinho, a young carefree cowboy on a quest for his first title, and his best friend, Travis Cadwell, a veteran trying to make the NFR one last time.      Much of Blacktop Cowboys unfolds in trucks, trailers, arenas, behind the chutes, casinos, beds and everywhere else cowboys spend their time. By taking the reader deep into the cowboys' lives, Blacktop Cowboys offers a true and intimate portrait of men having the time of their lives while living on the road in pursuit of the dream to be the best.

Starred Review. With gritty tough-guy prose and an unerring eye for details that capture the guts and frailty of the human condition, Phillips has crafted an enthralling tale of the modern bulldogging cowboy. A reporter for the Modesto (Calif.) Bee, Phillips spent a year on the road with "one loose-knit band of cowboys, mostly steer wrestlers" during the 2004 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association season. From the dusty arenas of Norco, Calif., and Cody, Wyo., to the glitzy, sexed-up Strip in Las Vegas, Phillips centers this rip-snorting yarn on Luke Branquino, a tobacco-chewing, womanizing up-and-comer from California, and Travis Cadwell, an old-timer trying to find the glory one last time. In Phillips's powerful language, Branquino is big in body and character, and on the endless rodeo circuit he drinks, wrestles thousand-pound steers to the ground and makes it with the ladies with equal abandon. In the harsh reality of the arena, the aging Cadwell "felt like he was embarrassing himself... a new and entirely ugly feeling." This is a raunchy, insightful delight. 16 pages b&w photos not seen by PW. (Nov.)

From Booklist
Luke Branquinho is a young, up-and--coming rodeo cowboy looking for his first major title. Travis Cadwell, Luke's best friend, is a grizzled veteran of the sport at the ripe old age of 36. Over the course of the 2004 rodeo season, each tries to fulfill a personal quest. Oh, and have a lot of fun, too. Phillips chronicles the season from start to finish, taking us inside the world of competitive steer wrestling and showing that pretty much everything we thought we knew about the sport was either wrong, grossly inaccurate, or just plain silly. For aficionados of the rodeo circuit, this is one of those books that will get read, passed around, discussed, picked apart, and then elevated to the level of classic. It's also, for the novice reader, a detailed and informative introduction to this unusual sport--although, for its participants, perhaps calling is a better word. David Pitt

"In a world full of foul-mouthed cowboys, liquor and gambling, Ty Phillips, with his eye for detail and evocative prose, does something almost unimaginable: He discovers the beauty of it all.'' --Josh Peter, author of FRIED TWINKIES, BUCKLE BUNNIES & BULL RIDERS
"Ty Phillips does an outstanding job of taking the reader into the world of a professional rodeo cowboy. It's a fun read for people who don't know anything about cowboys or the sport. At the same time, it's very credible for those who live and breathe rodeo. BLACKTOP COWBOYS makes you feel like you're a traveling partner out on the road for a year experiencing everything - and I mean everything." - Ty Murray, 7-time all-around rodeo world champion and author of KING OF THE COWBOYS
"This is one of the most accurate and truthful rodeo books I've ever read. A lot of fans only see cowboys for a few seconds in the arena and think, 'What a glorious life it is.' But the rest of it isn't quite as glamorous, and BLACKTOP COWBOYS captures that in an enjoyable way. If you really want to understand rodeo, then get this book because it accurately describes what happens in and out of the arena."--Walt Garrison, former steer wrestler and Dallas Cowboys fullback

BLACKTOP COWBOYS
By C J Bulygo
This book is not run-of-the-mill. It is unique. The book is a fascinating narrative of what took place over one year for one group of traveling cowboys. I don't think I have ever read a book before where I felt the author was a silent mouse in the corner and didn't miss a thing; words, actions or silence. The correlation of facts, action & the written word was dumbfounding. It was camaraderie, trashy talk and action mixed with gentle emotion. The picture of Luke with his girlfriend speaks volumes. The personae of rough cowboy/polite rancher are like the people I have known.

As for the actual writing, it is not often that a book is this perfectly edited and presented. The addition of pictures so we could actually keep track of names and people was extra special. I was impressed. Five Stars from me, Ty.

Brilliantly Captured
By Termagent
I had read a glowing review of Blacktop Cowboys that piqued my interest. Though my husband describes me as a neo-aristocratic fashionista, little did he know that up to the age of 11 I rode western saddle and particpated in, albeit very small, local rodeos. There is something about these men (and women) who capture a part of America that holds a seemingly romantic life. Hats off, literally, to Ty Phillips! He wrote a wonderful book on today's steer wrestlers. And thanks to the gentlemen who allowed Mr. Phillips into their life. Without their participation I don't know if Mr. Phillips could have written so honestly about them. Mr. Phillips does not romantize, per se, about the life, but is able to put one there, watching the milesigns go by, feel the dust in one's nose, and the frustration or joy of an event. Whether one has an interest in rodeos or cowboys, buy this book, you won't read anything better. Thank you Mr. Phillips for writing about a subject few of us will ever know as well, than through your words.

Inside: Life Behind Bars in America, by Michael G. Santos

Before Orange is the New Black, there was Inside.

American jails and prisons confine nearly 13.5 million people each year. Despite these disturbing numbers, little is known about life inside beyond the mythology of popular culture.

Michael G. Santos, a federal prisoner nearing the end of his second decade of continuous confinement, documents the lives of the men warehoused in the American prison system. Inside: Life Behind Bars in America, his first book for the general public, takes us behind those bars and into the chaos of the cellblock.

Capturing the voices of his fellow prisoners with perfect pitch, Santos makes the tragic―and at times inspiring―stories of men from the toughest gang leaders to the richest Wall Street criminals come alive. From drug schemes, murders for hire, and even a prostitution ring that trades on the flesh of female prison guards, this book contains the never-before-seen details of prison life that at last illuminate the varied ways in which men experience life behind bars in America.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1987, during the height of the Reagan administration's "Just say no" campaign, 21-year-old Santos received a 45-year sentence for his involvement in the distribution of large amounts of cocaine. Now, after nearly 20 years in jail, Santos has devoted himself to making the best out of his incarceration. Having received a B.A. and M.A. from accredited universities, he spends much of his free time reading and writing about the U.S. criminal system. Here, he uses his insider perspective to provide a blunt, often disturbing look at America's prison system. More anecdotal than personal or analytical, his account illustrates the presence of gangs, drugs, prostitution and rape in prison through a series of dramatized stories. Although the dialogue is at times overwrought, the stories themselves are shocking and illuminating. Together they paint a picture of prison culture and its dehumanizing effects on the people who live within it. The book also functions beyond its role as an exposé, effectively questioning the efficacy of modern prisons. Santos rejects the idea that the "correctional system" does much correcting, and provides repeated examples of the sense of hopelessness inmates suffer during their sentences. (Aug.)

“More than just a seamy look at prison life. A chilling, timely portrayal.” ―New York Times Book Review

“Inside is actually two books. The red meat of the book is a collection of more than 100 prisoners' accounts, including every gruesome detail… But between shocking tales of inmate misbehavior are Santos' convincing theories about what it all means.” ―Sean Bosker, New York Post

“The tone and his focus on other inmates' experiences rather than his own lend the book weight and authenticity, opening a window onto the corrupt, violent and ultimately counter-productive society of American prisons.” ―Edward Humes, Los Angeles Times

“Shocking and illuminating.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Inside is not recommended for the faint at heart. Santos eloquently and engagingly captures the subculture of the prisoner. Inside is a must-read.” ―Sam Torres, Ph.D., Professor of Criminal Justice, California State University, Long Beach, and Senior U.S. Probation Officer (Ret.)

From the Back Cover
American jails and prisons confine nearly 13.5 million people each year, and it is estimated that 6 to 7 percent of the U.S. population will be confined in their lifetimes. Despite these disturbing numbers, little is known about life inside beyond the mythology of popular culture.
Michael G. Santos, a federal prisoner nearing the end of his second decade of continuous confinement, has dedicated the last eighteen years to shedding light on the lives of the men warehoused in the American prison system. "Inside: " "Life Behind Bars in America," his first book for the general public, takes us behind those bars and into the chaos of the cellblock.
Capturing the voices of his fellow prisoners with perfect pitch, Santos makes the tragic--- and at times inspiring---stories of men from the toughest gang leaders to the richest Wall Street criminals come alive. From drug schemes, murders for hire, and even a prostitution ring that trades on the flesh of female prison guards, this book contains the never-before-seen details of prison life that at last illuminate the varied ways in which men experience life behind bars in America.

Outstanding
By P. Meltzer
I thought that this book was excellent. I have read a number of books on prisons and prison life and I have to say that this is one of the best and most interesting I have ever read. It would also be a difficult book to duplicate because how often is it that a Michael Santos-type (i.e. a highly literate, very good and observant writer) would find himself behind bars for 20 years in virtually every kind of secutity level, from high-security on down? Other books are from those who have never actually lived in prison or who have been in low-level security prisons only or who do not share his eloquence on the page. I really recommend this book.

Honesty, clarity, hope in this top notch "prison" book
By Angela
Three things that struck me as I read Inside, were these:

1. The rigorous honesty of Mr. Santos.

2. The absolute accuracy of Mr. Santos' 'ear' for jargon, slang and prison profanity

3. The overwhelming sense of clarity I received regarding Mr. Santos' sense of who he was, who he now is, and how he became the man he is today.

Translation: Possibly the best 'prison' book I've ever read next to 'In the Belly of the Beast" by Jack Henry Abbott.

Mr. Santos' doesn't come close to Mr. Abbott's often times overwrought and dense philosophies regarding prison life (Abbott wrote more in essay form, as Santos writes more in narrative form) but then, Abbott's book was compiled from a series of letters written to Norman Mailer, so Abbott was hitting, through his writing, one-way line drives into the catcher's mitt of his audience. Mr. Santos is telling us a story here, and so his writing has the natural ebbs and flows of a story, whereas Abbott's book is simply a red-hot laser of accusation, opinion and deep, dark thought - very deep and dark thought.

What I found validating however, was how Mr. Santos stood to-to-toe with with Mr. Abbott on 'just the facts' of [life in] a penitentiary and how he also stood on even footing with another proven and literary award-winning prison author, Edward Bunker. Even decades after Mr. Bunker's incarcerations at Folsom and San Quentin prisons, and the subsequent books he produced (some of which were turned into films) including, 'No Beast So Fierce," and 'The Animal Factory,' Mr. Santos writes as if he were a contemporary of Mr. Bunker's, proving perhaps his, and Mr. Abbott's claims that in our country, the penitentiary system and its penal codes and methodologies are outmoded, draconian and are, in many instances, crafted to retard the very "rehabilitation" tax payers expect our prison systems to effect upon those they are charged with housing.

From a sheer 'ear' standpoint, Mr. Santos may take the prize. Not since Jimmy Lerner's memoir, 'You Got Nothin' Coming!" have I read such precisely accurate slang and jargon. Mr. Santos captures the lurid, crass and ignorant language of his fellows with a flawless ear. So much so, perhaps in a strange way, Mr. Santos has made a case for Congress to enact laws to either recognize a new Language in America--call it OGese (Original Gansta-ese) or, to pass laws that make it illegal to slaughter the English language and the grammatical mortar which holds it together such as his fellow felons do.

Overriding all of this however, at the completion of this bright, clarifying and optimistic book, is the unimpeachable fact that Mr. Santos is ready to be set free. He has not only paid his debt to the law's of the society that he betrayed as a young man, but he has repaid it with large doses of service-soaked interest in the forms of two college degrees and a partial Ph.D, classes taught to fellow prisoners and lessons taught, via video conference, to university students. He has paid it with this wonderful book and his previous books on life in prison, and he has paid it with his awareness and his level-headed telling of how he was, what happened, and who and what he is today, and what's happening to him now, and what he not only expects to happen, but what he expects to make happen in his future on his continuing road of self-imposed rehabilitation.

Surely, Mr. Santos is not a Saint (he's witnessed murders and crimes in prison and has not "told"), and certainly he is not the first, nor will he be the last felon to self-educate, and write literary gems from a prison cell. But from this book, which details Mr. Santos' every effort to better himself physically, educationally, spiritually and socially, we see clearly that here is a man more than capable of being released to join the general citizenry, and making, and doing good - for himself and for others - for decades to come.

When I finished reading and then, reading again, the books of Edward Bunker, I wanted to meet him to say, "I loved your books!" When I finished "Inside," I thought, if I ever meet Michael Santos, I'd like to ask him, "Now, will you please show me how to be more like you?"

If one could snap their fingers and get wishes granted, I'd snap for the following:

1. That a producer of 60 Minutes get on the Michael Santos story and get his story on the air

2. That walking through the streets of Manhattan, I'd begin seeing 'Free Michael Santos' tee shirts

3. That Michael Santos is released - soon - and that he have a wonderfully joyous, fulfilling second half to his life.

I don't think anyone will have to snap for number three, though. He will.

Inside Prisons
By C. McPherson
Michael Santos has written an important book for all Americans--but especially those who are concerned about the operation of Federal prisons and the lives of the prisoners. He takes us inside prisons at every level of the Federal prison system and tells us of his experiences in them. His information comes from his own journals, which he has kept since the beginning of his incarceration, and from court records of criminal acts which have occurred inside some of the prisons. The picture which emerges is frightening, with prisoners at the mercy, sometimes, of sadistic guards and prison officials, and of their fellow inmates. There is much which is wrong with the operation of our prison system, and it at last is possible to find credible information on which revised policies might be based. By writing this book, Michael Santos has made a valuable contribution to the prison system and to the citizens of this country.

Toussaint, Montana isn't easily rattled, but an earthquake uncovers an ancient burial ground and the well-preserved bones of a primitive people. When an archeologist is found with a bullet in his back and a dinosaur tooth in his pocket, sometime sleuth Gabriel Du Pré steps in with the wisdom and vision of his Métis ancestors to uncover the answers. But while Indians, archeologists, and entrepreneurs battle for valuable land and the precious remains of a dinosaur, a predator more dangerous than the great T. Rex walks the Montana plains, hungry to strike again...

Amazon.com Review
Fans of Peter Bowen's gloriously unbridled books about Montana's Gabriel Du Pre have cause to celebrate with Thunder Horse. The part-Medis Indian cattle-brand inspector and occasional deputy sheriff gets involved in a story of murder and greed that links the ancient Indian residents of Montana (and an even older inhabitant, Tyrannosaurus Rex--the titular "thunder horse") with a present-day Japanese consortium's plans to turn a bucolic spring into a commercial trout farm. Along the way, Du Pre drives his old pickup too fast along Montana's back roads, drinks gallons of cheap wine with a brace of fascinating friends, plays his fiddle, and resonates with originality and energy. Past Du Pre tales in paperback include Notches, Specimen Song, and Wolf, No Wolf.

From Publishers Weekly
Montana cattle-brand inspector Gabriel Du Pre is banging on the door of archeologist Aaron Morgenstern's apartment in the historic Baxter Hotel, the tallest building in Bozeman. The old man who opens the door asks Du Pre: "Are you the goddamned Red River Breed with the damn dinosaur tooth that fool Burdette called me about?" The growing legion of fans of Bowen's first four Du Pre books (most recently, 1997's Notches) will recognize the tone and the territory. After a serious earthquake shakes up the local topography, Du Pre, the part-Metis Indian who frequently serves as deputy to county sheriff Benny Klein, gets involved in a story of greed that links ancient Indian residents of Montana with a present-day Japanese consortium's plans to turn a bucolic spring into a commercial trout farm. There's a murder too: a snowmobiler is shot while carrying a valuable fossilized tooth of a T-Rex. Along the way, Du Pre gets to drive his old pickup too fast along Montana's back roads, drink gallons of cheap wine with a brace of fascinating friends (including his wise lover, Madelaine, and a wonderful old rascal called Benetsee who's part medicine man and part con man), play his fiddle and radiate an immensely charming sense of enhanced reality. Idiosyncratic, convincing and marked by thoroughly distinctive rhythms of dialogue, Bowen's Du Pre series claims unique territory in the genre.

From Library Journal
A Japanese company purchases an isolated patch of Montana called Le Doux Springs with plans for opening a trout-fishing resort. An earthquake changes things, at least temporarily, by draining the springs and exposing an ancient burial site. Good-guy Gabriel Du Pre and friends (Notches, St. Martin's, 1996) remove the contents for study but are interrupted by the discovery of a murder victim. Oddly enough, the victim possesses a large Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth, which of course ignites media attention?and covert attention from the Japanese. Bowen imbues his tale with the strong flavor of colorful characters, Native American legend, and regional dialects?a heady mix destined for all collections. This latest Western mystery by Havill (Privileged To Kill, LJ 2/1/97) is a three-parter. First, unknown vandals burglarize the home of Bill Gastner, aging undersheriff of New Mexico's Posadas County. Second, Gastner's nearest neighbor, who is in his eighties, buries his dead wife on Gastner's property, thus instigating suspicions of murder. Finally, a three-year-old disappears from a mesa campground. Although recuperating from surgery and under the watchful eye of his visiting daughter, Gastner handily deals with all three problems?in addition to personal ones that arise. Crisp writing and clarity of focus make this a pleasure to read and essential for any collection.

"They sang. They didn't talk."
By Marc Ruby™
Once upon a time I read Bowen's Gabriel Du Pré stories because they were good mystery stories. Then I read them because I loved the characters. Then I read them because, by de-romanticizing the Northwest they had created a whole different vision of life in a land well beyond my ken. Now I read them because of all of those things - there is always some gemlike bit in the story that catches my imagination. Thunder Horse is like a boxful of those moments.

Du Pré is a Metís Indian, member of a subculture that has existed before there were clearcut boundaries and fences. It is a composite culture, often ignored, but of great richness and importance in American history. It was the Metis, after all, who led Lewis and Clark west, who carried the furs to market, and learned to play a music which can compel the most somnolent to toe tapping.

Many peoples have crisscrossed the north of Montana, not just the Metís, and Thunder Horse is about the most ancient of these, the Horned Star People, who came across the land bridges 15,000 years ago. A gravesite is discovered in Du Pré 's country on land destined to become a dude trout fishing in the middle of nowhere. When bones from a Tyrannosaurus Rex are also found Du Pré quickly realizes that the trout are just a ruse and the new owners are really looking for a dinosaur skeleton worth millions. And the Horned Star dead are just a nuisance to the hunters. Even in Toussaint, Montana, big money means big trouble. In no time flat a more modern victim is found.

The real mystery isn't the murder, though, but the intricate relationship between the pieces of a millennia old puzzle. Dinosaur bones, 15,000 year old Caucasian skeletons, and local Indian practices from as late as the past century all blend together into a story that is half anthropology and half a deeper mysticism that us modern guys from Detroit can really only guess at. Bowen manages to bring is together into a story that is as funny as it is respectful of the deepest of values. I find myself inhaling the story at one gulp and then desperately wanting more.

This author is not for everyone. I enjoyed reading the book. The language is a little rough. It does provide a good view of the plight of the French-Indian population in the north-west.
