Born in Brooklyn
By Brooklyn58
This is my second purchase of the same book. I accidentally left the first one on the R train heading to Bay Ridge. It killed me because I had all my little notes of some of the sites I visited when checking out the recommended sites in the "Guide". I was born in Bushwick and worked in my Dad's german restaurant on Myrtle Avenue until I was 16, before we moved to Connecticut in the mid-70's. Brooklyn was not too pretty then. That's when you could pick up a brownstone, as my dad says, "fa nothin'..."! Anyway, for the past 5 years, I have been seriously trying to reconnect to my Brooklyn past with my(3)teenage kids, who are learning that Manhattan is not necessarily the center of the universe. This guide has introduced me to areas I didn't know existed, "Little Pakistan", M&I International, even "Bed-Stuy", which was off-limits for me when I was growing up. The "Guide" cuts the right appeal for the first timers as well as the experienced Brooklynite. And, don't kid yourself, even if you have lived in Brooklyn all your life, there are still places to check out, places to eat, etc. since Brooklyn is always on the "move". If you use Brooklyn "NFT" in conjunction with this Guide, you've got all the information you'll need to explore Brooklyn.

Brooklyn!

I think this book is a great resource for someone who is new to the area. It gives a listing of various events, businesses, etc. in Brooklyn. It divides the borough up by neighbhorhoods which makes it user-friendly. I recommend this book for someone who is new to the Brooklyn area.

This book is the best resource for everything-Brooklyn! This book puts Zagats to shame. It is the perfect guide to key Brooklyn neighborhoods, and you should not leave home without it! In fact, I keep a copy in my car, just in case... If I could give a book a 6 star rating, this book would get it!

Little Children: A Novel, by Tom Perrotta

Tom Perrotta's thirty-ish parents of young children are a varied and surprising bunch. There's Todd, the handsome stay-at-home dad dubbed "The Prom King" by the moms of the playground; Sarah, a lapsed feminist with a bisexual past, who seems to have stumbled into a traditional marriage; Richard, Sarah's husband, who has found himself more and more involved with a fantasy life on the internet than with the flesh and blood in his own house; and Mary Ann, who thinks she has it all figured out, down to scheduling a weekly roll in the hay with her husband, every Tuesday at 9pm. They all raise their kids in the kind of sleepy American suburb where nothing ever seems to happen-at least until one eventful summer, when a convicted child molester moves back to town, and two restless parents begin an affair that goes further than either of them could have imagined. Unexpectedly suspenseful, but written with all the fluency and dark humor of Perrotta's previous novels, Little Children exposes the adult dramas unfolding amidst the swingsets and slides of an ordinary American playground.

From Publishers Weekly
The characters in this intelligent, absorbing tale of suburban angst are constrained and defined by their relationship to children. There's Sarah, an erstwhile bisexual feminist who finds herself an unhappy mother and wife to a branding consultant addicted to Internet porn. There's Todd, a handsome ex-jock and stay-at-home dad known to neighborhood housewives as the Prom King, who finds in house-husbandry and reveries about his teenage glory days a comforting alternative to his wife's demands that he pass the bar and get on with a law career. There's Mary Ann, an uptight supermom who schedules sex with her husband every Tuesday at nine and already has her well-drilled four-year-old on the inside track to Harvard. And there's Ronnie, a pedophile whose return from prison throws the school district into an uproar, and his mother, May, who still harbors hopes that her son will turn out well after all. In the midst of this universe of mild to fulminating family dysfunction, Sarah and Todd drift into an affair that recaptures the passion of adolescence, that fleeting liminal period of freedom and possibility between the dutiful rigidities of childhood and parenthood. Perrotta (Election; Joe College; etc.) views his characters with a funny, acute and sympathetic eye, using the well-observed antics of preschoolers as a telling backdrop to their parents' botched transitions into adulthood. Once again, he proves himself an expert at exploring the roiling psychological depths beneath the placid surface of suburbia.

From The New Yorker
The eponymous children in this satirical novel are actually adults who, chafing at the burdens of parenthood, try to re-create their unencumbered youth. Sarah, an overeducated young homemaker, likens her tantrum-prone daughter to a "brooding Russian epileptic" out of Dostoevsky, and pines for lost college days of feminism and bisexuality. While her husband orders used panties online, she has furtive sex with a stay-at-home dad whose repeated failure to pass the bar has earned him the contempt of his gorgeous wife. The humor is sometimes cruel, but Perrotta never betrays the complexity of his characters. For all Sarah's sins—neglecting her child, wallowing in romantic delusions—there's something almost brave about her refusal to join the supermoms drilling their toddlers with dreams of Harvard, and about her yearning for more than "a painfully ordinary life."

From Booklist
Perrotta sent up the foibles of high-schoolers in Election (1998) and of Ivy Leaguers in Joe College (2000). Here, in warmly humorous prose, he takes on the thirtysomething parents of young children. Handsome stay-at-home dad Todd, dubbed the Prom King by the moms at the playground, secretly grooves to Raffi and loves staging horrific train wrecks with his young son; he has flunked the bar exam twice and can sense his wife's increasing exasperation, but he can't force himself to study. Although Sarah has a Ph.D. in feminist studies, she is completely flummoxed by her toddler's temper tantrums and her husband's seeming infatuation with a pornographic Web site. Sarah and Todd fall into an unlikely affair, and although they know they are acting out of desperation to escape problems on the home front, their relationship is full of electric sex and genuine emotion. Perrotta, with a light but sure hand, expertly sketches the angst of the playground set and then amps up his material with a subplot involving a child molester. A fast-reading, wholly engaging novel. No likable characters!
By D. Clark
I am surprised that I made it to the end of this book. There is s complete lack of likable characters and while I don't necessarily enjoy stories where the author feels that everything needs to be tied up in a nice neat bow at the end, this ending left you nowhere. It was actually bizarre-almost like the author just ran out of steam or simply gave up on the thoroughly unpleasant characters in it.

Losers of the Junior League and their Lost Husbands
By Randall Neustaedter
What a wonderful and restrained depiction of suburban hypocrisy, self-delusion, and maddening frustration. The characters are comical, tragic, pathetic, and as close as you and me. This book reads like an intimate peek inside the empty heads of all those fellow suburbanites we see at the park, all those folks we really don't want to get to know because they are no one's heroes or role models. The GAP-clad dads and aerobic&yoga moms crowd may be an easy target, but Perrotta has his sights set on them with a joyous, and nearly sadistic, piercing eye. He revels in their petty problems and he views them with an embarrassingly self-observant perspective. By turns funny and disturbing, this absorbing tale has us fascinated because it gives us so much insight into our friends and neighbors, and dare I say it, ourselves. If Rick Moody captured the deluded 70s suburb parents with his classic Ice Storm (don't miss the movie), Perrotta does it in spades with his sad, understated tale of our current friends at the playground and preschool.

Suburban Satire
By Brett Benner
Modern marriage and suburbia are thrown on the barbeque and thoroughly cooked in this dark, biting and witty satire. I remember when I was young my Mother once telling me, "No one has the Norman Rockwell family", and that statement is all in evidence here. There's Todd, the once golden boy quarterback struggling to pass his bar exam and playing Mr Mom, while his wife tries to make ends meet. He meets Sarah one day at the playground who has her own problems in the marriage department since her husband is falling for an internet exhibitionist. Throw into the mix a recently released child molester, and you have the makings of some uncomfortable chuckles at the very least. The book feels painfully accurate in its portrayal of disappointment and disenchantment so many of these characters feel in the daily grinds of their lives. And it's their almost obsessive pursuits to capture a fleeting bit of what they think can bring them happiness that makes it both painful and funny at the same time.

From Library Journal
The library of children's theater is understocked, and this collection partly redresses that situation. These mostly recent short plays are directed at children around ten, the ideal age to build a theater-going habit. The book begins with an interview with Maurice Sendak and includes a play of his, indicating the level of excellence the collection aims for and succeeds in achieving. None of these plays is doctrinaire or didactic, though they are full of wisdom. They engage children's imagination to communicate a sense of worth. There are coming-of-age plays, tolerance plays, and plays about children in society and war, and we are prefaced by useful introductions that will aid adult directors. Some are musicals. The best of them are based on folk tales from American Indian, eastern European, Russian, Japanese, and other traditions. Some are adaptations of children's literature such as Charlotte's Web and The Jungle Books. There is something here to meet every theater need and every child's anticipation. Highly recommended.?Thomas E. Luddy, Salem State Coll., MA

From Booklist
For librarians and other adults interested in the production of good children's theater, this excellent collection features 20 plays covering a variety of subjects and interests. Jennings has included original plays as well as adaptations of known works, all by award-winning playwrights who are recognized in brief biographical headnotes to the scripts. Hits such as Maurice Sendak's Really Rosie and Joseph Robinette's adaptation of Charlotte's Web are mixed with lesser-known treasures such as John Kauffman's According to Coyote. A conversation between playwright James Still and Sendak provides a motivational foreword. The scripts are not intended to be reproduced, but copyright sources are given, with addresses and phone numbers for those interested in obtaining permission to perform the plays. Highly recommended for school and public libraries and anyone interested in a substantial collection of plays for children. Helen Rosenberg

Excellent for teaching!
By Q. Le
I love this book! The plays are deep and meaningful. Normally, my students would never want to read something so deep but since it is a play they are more motivated to do so. I like it a lot better than using novels because most of the plays are fairly short at least for 5th graders and up (They're about 10-20 pages long). This perfect for pulling lessons about story structure, characterizations, themes, and whatnot without having to read a full length novel or a lower level picture book.

There is a lot to discuss in these plays. For example, we are reading The Ice Wolf in class today. This is a story about a little Eskimo girl who is rejected by her community because she looks different and was almost threw out in the snow to die by her own father. We were about to discuss the father's internal struggle to follow the ways of his people and the love of his own daughter with my 5th graders.

Plays seem to be great motivators for my kids to read and discuss literature in a deeper way. These plays allow you do so in a 'just right' manner. You are putting the kids over their heads with Shakespeare or dumbing it down too much with other kiddie plays out there. I would recommend this for Intermediate/Upper Grades.

The American Revelation: Ten Ideals That Shaped Our Country from the Puritans to the Cold War, by Neil Baldwin

Neil Baldwin, one of the most exciting intellectual historians, has written extensively about the great thinkers and innovators who have shaped our unique American identity. In THE AMERICAN REVELATION, he turns his energies to the unfolding story of how the American spirit developed over 400 years.

This inspiring examination of the ideals that have grown to inform our national identity and of the figures who set the course for our evolving self image covers:

City on a Hill--John Winthrop--1630
Common Sense--Thomas Paine--1776
E pluribus unum--Pierre-Eugene Du Simitiere--1776
Self Reliance--Ralph Waldo Emerson--1841
Manifest Destiny--John L. O'Sullivan--1845
Progress and Poverty--Henry George--1879
The Sphere of Action--Jane Addams--1902
The Melting Pot--Israel Zangwill--1908
The Negro in Our History--Carter Woodson--1922
The Marshall Plan--George C. Marshall--1947

Neil Baldwin writes of figures both familiar and forgotten in this work of popular history that seeks to illuminate and enliven the current debate about American's role in the world. Meticulously researched and entertainingly written, THE AMERICAN REVELATION will make all U.S. readers, regardless of their politics, be proud of our country's intellectual heritage and high-minded values and will reassert those ideals to the rest of the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Given the polarization of contemporary America, says historian and former National Book Foundation executive director Baldwin, "we need to turn to galvanizing beliefs that will provide a unifying focus...." To this end, Baldwin ably investigates 10 key precepts of what might be called "fundamental Americanism," while at the same time highlighting iconic Americans who helped to define and articulate those precepts. Here we have biographical sketches of early Massachusetts governor John Winthrop, who offered the idea of a "city on a hill"; Thomas Paine's Common Sense; Pierre Du Simitière's notion of "E pluribus unum"; Emerson's vision of self-reliance; John L. O'Sullivan's concept of manifest destiny and, of more recent vintage, the enlightened generosity embodied in the post-WWII Marshall Plan. But in whittling these down to the arbitrary number of 10, Baldwin necessarily leaves out a great deal. Any collection such as this desperately needs Abraham Lincoln's soaring poetry regarding government "of the people, by the people, for the people," and a nod to the Declaration of Independence and JFK's inaugural speech, among other key rhetorical pillars of the American experiment.

From Booklist
Of the myriad American heroes, Baldwin boils down the list to 10 who represent the essence of the U.S and its ideals. He begins in 1630 with John Winthrop's journey to the New World and founding of the Massachusetts Bay Company, which set the tone for American community and commerce. Baldwin includes Thomas Paine, author and publisher of Common Sense, the foundation for America's free press, as well as the lesser-known Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere, who, during the American Revolution, created the unifying slogan e pluribus unum for the fledgling nation. Among the other idealists: Ralph Waldo Emerson and his philosophy of self-reliance; John L. O'Sullivan, supporter of American expansion as Manifest Destiny; Henry George, author of Progress and Poverty and fair tax advocate; Jane Addams, whose Hull House helped assimilate immigrants; Israel Zangwill, whose drama The Melting Pot trumpeted the ideal of equal opportunity for new Americans; Carter G. Woodson, crusader for inclusion of blacks in American history; and George Marshall, author of the 1948 plan that put American resources to work in rebuilding war-torn Europe. Vernon Ford

Review
"At a time when there is a lot of uninformed talk about American values, it's important to reach back and understand what those values truly are. Neil Baldwin does it in this smart and thoughtful narrative by looking at ten examples, ranging from John Winthrop's great sermon invoking a "city on a hill" to the Marshall Plan that saved the prospect of free-market democracy in Europe."
-Walter Isaacson, author of Benjamin Franklin, An American Life

"The American Revelation is a revelation. Of Neil Baldwin's ten iconic lives, the incisive profile of the pioneering historian Carter Woodson stands out as a small masterpiece in the service of American exceptionalism at its best."
-David Levering Lewis, Pulitzer Prize winner, author of W. E. B. Du Bois: Biography of a Race : 1868-1919

"This is history at its best-a stirring, passionate account of ten Americans whose idealism helped shape our nation. For a country on the verge of a new, increasingly divisive era, The American Revelation comes just in the nick of time."- Nathaniel Philbrick, National Book Award winner, author of In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Waleship Essex

"What is an American? What do Americans believe? Why do we act as we do? At a time when much of the world, and even we ourselves, may not always be sure, Neil Baldwin, in this fascinating study, draws an illuminating portrait of the people and ideals that have guided our national destiny."- Ronald Steel, National Book Award winner, author of Walter Lippmann and the American Century
“A readable exercise in civics, and surely more inclusive than, say, William Bennett’s or Lynne Cheney’s published views on what those best ideals might be.”—KIRKUS REVIEWS

“Eloquent…compelling.”—THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

“…this terrific book as historian and critic is the most up-to-the-minute, if not valuable, book [Baldwin has] written….[an] enormously readable book…”—THE BUFFALO NEWS

A Thought-Provoking Narrative
By Bookreporter
Americans love political discussion and debate. From colonial days when pamphlets and town meetings were the mechanism of discourse, to modern times when talk radio and political blogs stimulate discussion of important public issues, robust political debate is a crucial element of American life. For many, an important element of current debate centers on the historical perspective. From documents and speeches such as The Federalist Papers, George Washington's farewell address and Lincoln's second inaugural address, great respect is often given to the intellectual contributions of America's founding fathers. It is a rare day when the opinion pages of major print media or television commentators do not make reference to the written word of bygone centuries.

THE AMERICAN REVELATION: Ten Ideals That Shaped Our Country From the Puritans to the Cold War, by Neil Baldwin, is both a thought-provoking and thoughtful narrative of important examples of ideas that have shaped American thought, life, and our unique American identity. The ideas selected by the author pre-date the founding of the United States as a nation and traverse nearly four centuries of American life. By the author's own admission, they are not intended to be exhaustive. Rather, they are a selection, a few out of many ideas, concepts and phrases of American history and how they came to be part of the American lexicon.

Baldwin's list is neither political nor polemic. His first selection, "City on a Hill," the remarks of John Winthrop to the Massachusetts Bay Colonists in 1630, has been quoted by proponents of diverse political philosophies --- President Ronald Reagan and Governor Mario Cuomo, to name just two. Baldwin's discussion of The Marshall Plan, the American effort to rebuild a shattered European continent after World War II, is probably the finest example in American history of truly bi-partisan foreign policy in action. In each chapter Baldwin provides the reader with a brief biographical note of the author of an important contribution to American thought, the times in which the author lived, and the impact of the ideas on the American nation. In a nation that still fiercely debates the words and deeds of its founding fathers, it is important to stimulate debate about American values throughout the life of our country in order to understand what those values truly are.

It is Neil Baldwin's belief that our nation is currently suffering the consequences of a deeply divisive political debate. The pulse of 21st century America, he writes, "often sounds as if it is emanating from two separate heartbeats." Americans need to turn to core beliefs that can provide a unifying focus for our thoughts and our lives. There have been times in the life of our nation when such unifying thoughts were presented to the nation. They may have been, in the words of Thomas Paine, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry George, Jane Adams, or any of the ten sculptors of American thought whose words serve as the foundation of THE AMERICAN REVELATION. The perilous times in which we live demand an idealism that leads to a new definition of patriotism and national character. That critical goal begins with one citizen and one reader at a time.

Not a bad read
By Warner Todd Huston
The 10 ideas that shaped America is quite an important topic of conversation, really. Why DID we get this way, exactly? How did we come about? Why do we have the dichotomy of a nation founded by religions, but a government free of them? Why did we shun socialism when Europe embraced it? Unfortunately, after reading this book I did not feel that any questions were answered.

Neal Baldwin is easy to read, that much can surely be said. But each chapter was so divorced from the other as to leave the reader imagining that he were reading a simple volume of selected essays from various sources with no overriding theme. To be fair, Mr. Baldwin does warn that he didn't intend any overarching theme, but that sort of makes the book a bit hollow.

And, my biggest problem with this small tome is that he ignored the Founder's ideas of representative democracy leaving it out of the mix. These ideas were the bedrock of our nation without which we would not have had an America in the first place. I believe his second chapter should have been on the Declaration of Independence.

Also it would have helped to have some thread enlightening us as to how the preceding chapter foreshadowed the next. After all, enlightenment ( that of showing the reader what great ideas led Americans to today) was the goal of Mr. Baldwin's work.

Still, the book did lead me to seek out some other sources and that is valuable in and of itself.

So, I give it three stars. An interesting read, but not what it could have been.

ten interesting biographical essays
By A Customer
The premise of these ten biographical essays is to concentrate on individuals who brought "fundamental Americanism", values at a time in which our leaders prefer polarizing the people to consolidate power via the money mechanism needed for reelections. Readers may disagree on the choices (no presidents), which is part of the fun of this tome. For instance, this reviewer expected Lincoln as the influence of changing from state-centric to national-conscience, but instead he failed to make the cut and some that were selected I never heard of before. Historical buffs will enjoy reading about values of this country from the seventeenth century: John Winthrop; eighteenth century: Thomas Paine and Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere; nineteenth century: Ralph Waldo Emerson, John L. O'Sullivan, and Henry George; twentieth century: Jane Addams, Israel Zangwill, Carter G. Woodson, and George C. Marshall. Written somewhat like the required reading of an American History 101 course, Neil Baldwin presents a fascinating concept supported by his chosen ones who he argues lived the American ideal of individual freedom and rights.

Though her own San Francisco law firm barely tolerates her, gutsy young attorney Sarah Woolson flouts proper feminine behavior in this nineteenth-century answer to Legally Blonde. While her mother begs her to settle down, her chauvinistic boss tries to come up with ever more spiteful ways to pressure his only female associate into quitting. Naturally, Sarah digs in her heels and vows to retain her position at any cost. Besides, she has no intention of straying too far from the action.
When the wife of wealthy society entrepreneur Leonard Godfrey drops dead of an apparent heart attack at a charity dinner for the new Women and Children's Hospital, Sarah's curiosity gets the better of her. But no one will believe in her theory that Caroline Godfrey's death was not natural---until several more people affiliated with the hospital die of inexplicable causes.
Meanwhile, when a pregnant widow whose husband has died in a sweatshop fire asks for Sarah's help in finding the owner so that she can sue for recompense, our feisty heroine insists on taking the case against her boss's orders. With the help of her colleague Robert Campbell and an eager young hansom cabdriver named Eddie, Sarah goes on a manhunt for Killy Doyle, the menacing head of the factory underworld. But she can't ignore the mysterious deaths at the Women and Children's Hospital---especially when the hospital's Chinese chef is arrested for the murders and the Chinese community's most powerful Tong Lord asks her to defend him.
Faced with her first criminal trial, Sarah stops at nothing to determine the killer's identity. But in trying to exonerate her client, she places her own life in danger. Will Sarah figure out who the murderer is, or will she be the final victim?

From Publishers Weekly
In Tallman's top-drawer second mystery set in late 19th-century San Francisco (after 2004's The Nob Hill Murders), attorney Sarah Woolson takes on a couple of cases that draw a torrent of protests from her law firm: the widow of a man killed in a multiple-fatality fire in a sweatshop seeks her help, as does a Chinese tong leader who asks her to defend a fellow countryman accused of murdering an accountant. In addition, a handsome, well-to-do bachelor wants her to handle his business negotiations. When all three clients' situations begin to intersect, Sarah realizes she has waded into dangerous, if not lethal, waters. Judge Woolson, Sarah's father, and Robert Campbell, her sole supporter among her law firm's associates, both lend their assistance, but neither is prepared when Sarah's investigations implicate members of San Francisco's high society in the crimes. Credible characters, cleverly subtle clues and a highly satisfying conclusion mark this intriguing tale as a superior example of its subgenre.

From Booklist
Attorney Sarah Woolson, daughter of a judge in San Francisco in the 1880s, is determined to practice her profession despite the contempt of the firm that reluctantly hired her. Her first-person voice is engaging if melodramatic as she relates her hostess' succumbing to poison at a dinner party and the subsequent deaths, also by poisoning, of several others connected to a charity hospital. When the irascible Chinese cook at the hospital is accused, Sarah becomes his defense attorney. Her various family members and an associate (two brothers, a doctor and a reporter, and the one lawyer at her firm who supports her) along with sundry other admirers are rich in interest if not depth of characterization. Still, Woolson's role as a protofeminist in the nineteenth century is a sympathetic one, and readers will empathize strongly with the obstacles she faces and the triumphs she achieves. Delightful!
By L. J. Roberts
I am so enjoying this series. The story moved right along, kept me interested and wanting to know what was coming. The final courtroom scene was a bit melodramatic, but didn't put me off the book. Tallman has created a smart, feisty character supported by her family but fighting society's norms, and the supporting characters are equally interesting. I definitely want to know what happens to them and eagerly await the next book.

A joyous reading experience
By T. James
As I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series,I had high hopes for The Russian Hill Murders, and Ms Tallman met and surpassed my expectations. The characters are well developed (and delightful, I might add),and the plot is just intricate enough to keep you guessing. I had a lot of fun trying to come up with "whodunnit" before Sarah Woolson. The writing is articulate, and there is a sense of excitement at all times. Highly recommended

a splendidly absorbing read
By tregatt
Shirley Tallman delivers a splendidly intriguing and suspenseful follow-up to "The Nob Hill Murders" in this second Sarah Woolson mystery novel, "The Russian Hill Murders." Definitely, this is a series to look out for!

When first a member of the new Women's and Children's Hospital, and then someone else who vehemently opposed the hospital's existence suddenly die, Sarah Woolson, San Francisco's first female lawyer, is intrigued and perplexed. The authorities dismiss both deaths as accidental, but Sarah has a feeling that there is something more to both deaths. However, she's too busy trying to help a client collect damages for a wrongful death suit, as well as having to put up with the bad tempered crochets of her hostile employer. And then the hospital's accountant dies under highly suspicious circumstances. This time there is evidence that the man was poisoned. And because he had had a very acrimonious relationship with the hospital's hot tempered Chinese cook, the police immediately jump to the conclusion that the cook is guilty of poisoning the accountant. And when they find the poison in the kitchen, they immediately arrest the man for murder. Sarah cannot believe that the cook has been arrested on such a slender piece of evidence, and fears that racial prejudice may at the root of the cook's arrest. So that when Li Ying, San Francisco's most powerful Tong lord whom Sarah met in "The Nob Hill Murders" requests that she defend the cook during the criminal trial, Sarah readily agrees. And even though Sarah realises that she has to contend not only with the racial prejudice of the jury, but also with the sexist opinions of the court and the jury, she's determined to do the best for her client -- and in this instance it means that she will have to discover the identity of the real murderer herself before it's too late!

I enjoyed Shirley Tallman's "The Russian Hill Murders" so much that I had to finish it in one sitting. The plot unfolded at a brisk and continuous pace; and the manner in which the author bridged both of Sarah's cases, cleverly done. Also nicely done was how the author maintained the suspense and how she portrayed San Francisco, both its people and the town, of the late 1800s. But what really made this novel a stellar one is the author's vivid and credible characterisation of her heroine, Sarah Woolson, and how she fitted the mystery around Sarah's stalwart character: a woman who believes strongly in the equality of sexes as well as the races, and who is not afraid to fight for what she believes in or to right a wrong. And it is this strong sense of justice and fair play that made "The Russian Hill Murders" a wonderful and absorbing read, and made me root for Sarah right to the end.

Praise for Ray Lampe

"Dr. BBQ is the premier barbecue teacher in the country today. He is helping to keep the grand old tradition of barbecue alive and well." ---Fast Eddy Maurin, Fast Eddy's/Cookshack

"Those of us who have made a study of barbecue know that Ray Lampe does, indeed, know jack about barbecue. . . . I appreciate his respect for the craft, its history, its traditions, and its practitioners. He's an original, colorful, sometimes abrasive and prickly character who contributes much to the image of barbecue. If he didn't exist we'd have to invent him."

Simply the Best
By James Crosby
Ray Lampe not only knows how to grill but has also produced a book that's as pleasing as his food. Everything is explained in down to earth and plain language so it's understandable and easy. To top it off, the recipes are unbelievable! I've tried just a few of the recipes and they all have produced the best BBQ food I've ever had, yes it's that easy. Give this book a try, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Absolutely THE BEST
By William Gronke
I have been a student of cooking for over 40 years. I have a good collection of cook books. This book is one of the best I have ever bought. The emphasis of course is on BBQ, but what a book. The author is accessible thru E mail. I tease the author that this is the most expensive cookbook that I ever bought, not because of its price, but when people taste the recipes made from it they want to borrow the book. I of course say, "please let me get you a copy." I already have bought five copies. Don't pass this one up if you enjoy big time BBQ.
