Peter Jackson: From Prince of Splatter to Lord of the Rings, by Ian Pryor

This fascinating look at the now celebrated director tells of the inspiration that have led to the making of the three world-famous Lord of the Rings films - and the six other films that preceded them. This unauthorized biography traces the journey of a young movie fanatic, from Sunday afternoons spent fooling around with a camera, through low-budget cult movies, to control of the most ambitious film project ever, on what is probably the best-loved fantasy novel ever written.

This in-depth biography explores the many talents of the young Peter Jackson: the making of Bad Taste; Meet the Feebles; Braindead; Heavenly Creatures; Forgotten Silver; The Frighteners, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The story behind the Rings - which tells how Jackson got the rights to make the film and the permission and funding to make three films rather than collapsing the story into just one or two films, interviews, and other behind the scenes material from the making of the landmark films. Past and future - in which the author considers Jackson's achievements and possible future - including his remake of King Kong.

From casts of zombies, traumatised puppets and murderous teenagers, to deal-making in Hollywood, this book is about following one's visions wherever they might lead.

From Publishers Weekly
With a fan's obsessive detailing and a New Zealander's pride in his homegrown subject matter, Pryor paints a straightforward portrait of Lord of the Rings director Jackson, from his beginnings as an 8 mmâ€"toting eight-year-old through his hit-and-miss efforts at quirky and comedic gore, to his years directing the beloved fantasy trilogy. On the heels of the final movie's record-tying 11-award win at the Academy Awards, this biography benefits both from its timing and the obvious enthusiasm Pryor brings to the topic. While at times veering into the hyperbolic, it does a fine job of explaining just what sort of character it takes for an unproven, hobbit-like director who rarely left New Zealand to persuade Hollywood to invest an estimated $320 million on a three-film package. The book suffers, however, from the author's obvious lack of access, which contributes to a secondhand characterization of Jackson, whose personality is revealed mostly through scraps from friends and family. In one particularly absurd chapter, Pryor is forced to sneak around the Rings set, Gollum-like, in order to get interesting enough (and barely that) descriptions of the production. Combined with a somewhat provincial New Zealander's perspective, that lack of proximityâ€"weakly explained on the jacket as "unauthorized"â€"maims what could otherwise have been a fuller portrait.

Bad taste
By E. A Solinas
Somehow it's always a little alarming to see "An Unauthorized Biography" on the dust jacket of a book, and Ian Pryor's "Peter Jackson: From Prince of Splatter to Lord of the Rings" is no exception. This crazy quilt of magazine articles is obviously a rush-job, and leaves a "bad taste" in the mouth."
Peter Jackson is best known for co-writing and directing hit movie trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." But he started off as a young Kiwi boy experimenting with a camera, and later getting together with his buddies to film the low-budget horror/SF-comedy "Bad Taste." An understated indie career led to the brilliant docudrama "Heavenly Creatures," which kick-started the career of star Kate Winslet. And from then on, he started the sprawling adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved epic fantasy, which has been embraced as a worldwide phenomena on par with "Star Wars."
Peter Jackson (who reportedly condemns this biography) is a fascinating figure in modern filmmaking. Unfortunately, since this biography is unauthorized and unapproved, Pryor has to stitch together just about every magazine article or press release ever written about Jackson. It's very unsatisfying since all of it has been said before. And the first time around, it didn't sound so.... well, smarmy.
Pryor paints Jackson in extreme colors, apparently so his adoration won't seem "fannish." But it doesn't make Jackson seem like a three-dimensional person. It makes him seem either like a saintly genius, or a creep. His personal life, friendships and interactions with actors aren't really dealt with, which makes him seem a lot more distant than he is. At least there's no dirt-dishing -- Jackson seems to have led a pretty much blameless life.
Pryor's writing style leaves something to be desired. He misspells some of Tolkien's words like "uruk-hai" (which he spells "urak-hai"). And Pryor uses overwritten gushing to cover up the book's biggest flaw: He doesn't know what Jackson is like. Pryor only describes his behavior, his words, and what other say about him -- the man himself remains an enigma at the book's end.
The saving grace of "Peter Jackson" is how it shows off the impact Jackson has had on his native New Zealand, both as a filmmaker and as a worldwide celebrity. However, this can't gloss over the opportunistic, slightly sneering tone that pervades Pryor's book. If you like Jackson -- as a director and a person -- it will make you squirm.
Fans of Peter Jackson may be hungry for more info on this beloved director. But you're better off waiting for the official (and approved) biography by Brian Sibley. Ian Pryor's "Peter Jackson: From Prince of Splatter to Lord of the Rings" has the slippery feeling of a rushed-to-print biography to cash in a filmmaker's fame.

Keen Insight into Pre-Rings Jackson
By Shakespeare
I couldn't help but notice this in one of the above reviews of the book..."This book is ridiculous as the writer doesn't even know his subject, Peter Jackson, in person."

I find that statement interesting because the book discusses at great length the relationship between the author and Jackson. At various points in Jackson's early movies, the author actually helped out on his movies.

As to the un-authorized biography question, the author was given access to write the book on all Jackson films up to the Lord of the Rings. I just can't imagine how you could read this book and come to the conclusion that the author didn't even know Jackson.

As for my opinion, I'm often facinated by the early careers of men like Jackson. There's already a ridiculous amount of info out there on Lord of the Rings, but this book gives you a peek at Jackson's beginnings, and I enjoyed that very much.

If you're buy this book for some kind of Rings Insider, go elsewhere. If you want to see Jackson before his epic, this book is for you.

biographer who does not know his subject
By A Customer
This book is ridiculous as the writer doesn't even know his subject, Peter Jackson, in person. He was refused interviews and visits on the set of LOTR. All he knows are information through magazine articles that have been published and read many times before. He criticizes Fellowship of the Ring without a real knowledge of Tolkien or the story itself. The writer is somewhat fascinated by Jackson but a biography must contain information that has not been published in movie magazines and in tabloids. There is no information on the person, only on what Jackson has done so far in the movie business. The timeline of this biography is cut off after the release of The Two Towers, meaning there is no word on Return of the King and its worldwide success and critical acclaim. Actors are quoted without their knowledge, things are taken out of context and the style of writing is poor. While the research of the films made prior to LOTR is interesting, those are all information that is avilable elsewhere as well. A very disappointing read, if you are a true fan of PJ and LOTR.

From Publishers Weekly
With a couple of platinum-selling "neo-soul" records to her name, Scott doesn't have much to prove, but offers this cull from a parallel life—the poetry she's written on and off, with varying degrees of public exposure, since middle school—in the hopes that poets everywhere will "continue to insight, ignite, and recite this blessed, raunchy, wild ride of a craft." The book reads like an ecstatic but disciplined panoply of influence and inspiration. Love poems, break-up poems, short-of-money poems, weariness poems, Christian poems, celebratory poems: all have an immediacy and short-lined honesty that reflects a deep appreciation of everyone from Nikki Giovanni to Emily Dickinson (just two of the poets mentioned in Scott's introduction). Better than the average coffeehouse fare, the poems probably would not have seen print without the records. That won't bother fans, and it shouldn't bother readers who come upon them not knowing who Scott is, and enjoy the poems anyway. (June)

No suprise, Jill Scott's poetry is beautifully lyrical.
By BMAR
If you love the music of Jill Scott for its beautifully personal and uplifting content, you'll simply devour these nearly 150 pages of her poems.

Jill has often said that she's kept written journals for years. As many of Jill's song lyrics read like poems to me (and I dearly love them), I was not surprised to find myself deeply engrossed in Jill's accounts of life and love in this compilation.

Jill's writings unapologetically hold love up and examine, admire and venerate it. Her poems also touch on issues of friendship and family.

I've known since I heard the first song from her very first album that Jill was not just another singer, but a poet who happens to possess and beautiful voice and undeniable music talent. Now she is not only an accomplished poet, but a published one. It speaks so highly of her talent and her very nature that the likes of Sonia Sanchez and Maya Angelou have recognized the power of her gift and her loving, intelligent spirit.

Never a big fan of audio books, I'm dying for the audio version of this collection!!!

It's good poetry for where I am in my life
By merlot
Let me start by saying I've not studied poetry in depth. I have read Maya Angelou and other things that are required in school and when I took my African American literature and philosophy classes in college. I've gone to spoken word events and I've watched Def Poetry. That said I'm not a true "student" of poetry and I only think about writing my own poetry (it never comes out on paper). I do however keep a journal and one of the main reasons I bought this book is because I'm going through a period in my life where I wanted to read something to uplift me and let me know that love and relationships and all that will all turn out okay (although there are times of sadness). I enjoyed this book and it actually helped me in the sense that it gave me some thoughts of things to explore as I wrote in my journal. I read in another poetry book that I bought at the same time that you shouldn't read the poems all at once because it is to be savored like fine chocolates and that poetry/words are the same so I didn't even attempt to read it all at once but what I've read so far is good (for me) and if you like Jill, are a black woman or appreciate poetry then I think this is a nice book to have. It probably makes a nice gift too.

A discovery
By Kevin Killian
Jill Scott is a singer and performer, though I have only rarely heard her music. Sonia Sanchez wrote a wonderful encomium for Scott, saying, "I know Jill Scott. She is pot liquor and cornbread. She is caviar and champagne. She is a blues song and a spirtual. She is Nina, Leontyne, Sarah, Aretha." Sanchez' poetry is one of the wonders of the 20th century so I decided to give her protégé a try. It wound up with me liking the book and I imagine many will too. Unlike Sanchez, her subject matter is not very variegated. It's all about love, love, and more love, and then there's some about feminism and black pride. She can compose infinite variations on these three topics, but after awhile you're like, "Oh, not another haiku about crazy love." However in a later section of the book Scott experiments with taking on different personae and these are much stronger. One poem takes the point of view of the adult looking back to days of childhood and realizing her mother loved her.

"She cries when she sees me/ holds me close when she knows I need me/ "Mommy" I say/ "Mommy" I say/ Smells so good/ Reminds me to go out and play/ makes me strawberry lemonade."

The sights and sounds of ordinary life are wistfully accounted for, almost as though she wasn't a star and just Jill from the block you might say. There's another poem that alludes to the pain of having lost a child, rather like Joni Mitchell's poignant "Little Green." And the best of all she speaks from the perspective of a roughened, overworked street prostitute with a broken soul whose age becomes the turning point of the poem's final, shocking lines. In her preface, Scott gives credit to her forebears, including Langston Hughes and Emily Dickinson. This poem "One of the Reasons" will remind readers of some of the soliloquy poems of Sapphire.

Lori and Kevin are smart, honest, funny thirtysomething hopeless romantics who---despite their best efforts---are still single. Like romance anthropologists, they deconstruct every key moment in the life cycle of a relationship. In this book, get both the male and female perspectives on:
 * Fighting etiquette (is all fair in love and war?)* Voice-mail message analysis. ("Hi, it's who?")* Body hair (where, why, and how much?)* Blind dates (are your good friends good pimps?)* To cry or not to cry (if you're a guy) in front of a woman* Cheating (without actually cheating)* Knowing when a relationship is really over (or: whether it's better to dump or be dumped)* And much, much more I Love You, Nice to Meet You is a hilarious and eye-opening collection of anecdotes from a guy and a girl who just want to find the one, but---lucky for you---they haven't.

Knowing that bad dates make good stories, Gottlieb (Stick Figure: A Diary of My Former Self) and Bleyer, a writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, share a collection of "anecdates" in this he-said she-said guide to "coupling up" that has not infrequent flashes of true hilarity-a rarity among the ever swelling ranks of humorous dating guides. The authors, good friends who have never been an item ("not now, not then"), provide individual interpretations on the standard fare of relationship topics, but cleverly; chapter titles include "Venue Ask Her Out - Is 'location, location, location' the key to getting a second date?" and "I'll Show You Mine, If You Show Me How - Is there any civilized way to get naked with a new lover?" Insights such as "If you cry about anything less than the death of a mother...you're doomed," "Oprah is pornography for women" and "a week of uninterrupted physical presence isn't a sign of love. It's a stakeout," make Gottlieb and Bleyer's stiff shots of wisdom go down more like a fizzy summertime cocktail, helping to make the dating game, if not always fun, at least fun to read about.

HILARIOUS AND INSIGHTFUL -- the BEST new book about love
By Danielle
This is the funniest book I've read in a long time -- I was actually laughing out loud and stopping to call friends and read portions of the book to them. But despite the hilarious observations of both authors (who say they aren't dating but I can't understand why not -- they're both incredibly witty and clever and seem to have a natural rapport), I actually found their insights to be valuable. They made me look at male/female relationships differently at times, which is saying something in this era of "He Said/She Said" books that just recycle stereotypical notions from popular culture. I LOVE YOU, NICE TO MEET YOU, on the other hand, is absolutely unique -- it's both memoir (of the authors' own dating experiences) and fresh cultural critique. It also has some poignant, tear-jerking stories that we can all relate to (especially in the parts about breaking up) and deals with topics we're all familiar with, but that nobody else seems to have written about, either in quite the same way, or at all.

Most of all, this book is wonderfully entertaining! Great to take to the beach or curl up with in bed at night. Read it alone, or share it with your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse. A GREAT read!!

Can you date a book?
By Deb
Funny, "I Love You, Nice to Meet You" are the same sentiments I had as soon as I read the first few pages of this book. Like a good date, this book is packed with wit, humor, irresistibility, and, charm. And, like a good relationship, this book offers heart-felt truths, wisdom, and insights if you're ready for them.

Kevin and Lori ("the guy and the girl") share their personal experiences, perspectives, and humor on "coupling up," falling down, and getting back up again. A he-said/she-said look at the anatomy of a relationship--from the first date to the "ex-sightings" (and all the rewarding, funny, annoying, and painful milestones in between)--this book offers both a fresh look and a guide book for coupling up without selling out. It seems quite obvious that every word the authors write reflects the experiences they've really encountered, survived, and learned (or are still learning) from.

If you're currently dating, pondering dating, sworn off dating (again), or, uh, just human, this book is likely to offer (so much) more than just a good time. Just like a good date...

From Publishers Weekly
Brown's epic (after Criminal Minded) explores New York's ghettoes of the 1980s and '90s, following two characters caught up in the crack epidemic. Brooklynite Jada turns to the drug to numb the pain caused by an abusive stepfather and helpless mother. Her transformation from feisty teenager into crackhead is rapid and explicit, and Brown spares no wretched detail of Jada's descent. Meanwhile, on Staten Island, Born is growing from the impressionable son of a legendary "Original Gangster" into a hardcore hustler in his own right, fueled in part by the hurt over his father's weakness for the rock. When Born and a newly clean Jada cross paths as young adults, their common survivor spirit sparks a fairy tale love, and for a time, they live the blinged-out high life together. But one careless snort of coke at a party sends Jada spiraling again, and Born shuns her. It's not long before strung-out Jada hits bottom. Jada and Born reunite years later after escaping the drug world, but the overlong conclusion devolves into redundancy as the lessons learned pile up. As ugly as their actions can be, Brown's characters are sympathetically drawn, and the Goodfellas-like take on the gangster life is eye-opening. (Feb.)

(RAW Rating: 4.5) - It Ain't Easy Being Me
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
In WHITE LINES, Jada Ford's life is turned upside down due to her mother's indifference towards the cruelty her boyfriends inflict on her children. One of Jada's mother's boyfriends is an alcoholic whose verbal, physical and attempted sexual abuse is the impetus for Jada's sister attempting suicide. Mr. Charlie, Edna's next boyfriend, seems nicer, but his ultimate goal is more malicious, as he feeds Jada's addiction to crack and turns her into a crack whore before she is 21 years of age.

When Jada regains control of her life and her sobriety, she meets Marquis Graham known on the streets as "Born". Born's early years are similar to Jada's, without the addiction. All he knows is the streets. His father was a notorious original gangster, who is now an invalid due to a stroke caused by his addiction to crack, which has torn their once close relationship apart. Born and Jada are immediately drawn to each other and begin a fairy tale relationship. However, fairy tales don't last forever; Jada's action at a party drastically alters her life.

WHITE LINES is a blunt, evocative, explosive urban epic by Tracy Brown. I was very impressed by the manner in which Brown developed the characters. Instead of being angry at Jada, I understood her pain based on the thoroughness in which the character was developed. While Born is not your average Prince Charming, in WHITE LINES, he suited the purpose. The strength of this novel lies in believable characters living amazing lives. At 516 pages, the book seemed a bit excessive, but once I began reading, I was not able to put it down. WHITE LINES is definitely one of the best books of 2007.

Chapter One
Digging Deep for Wisdom

It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work,
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.

—Wendell Berry

We begin with a story:

A man who always considered himself clever and capable died at the end of a long life and found himself on The Other Side, waiting for an interview with God. Time seemed to be nonexistent as he sat alone in a light-filled room with no ceiling, no walls and no floor, trying to adjust to his new circumstances and anxiously anticipating his upcoming meeting.

What will God ask me? he wondered. I was never much of a deep thinker. What if he asks me about the meaning of life? I won’t know what to say. I could always tell the truth—I was too busy being successful to think about that kind of thing. After all, my accomplishments have been very impressive—even God should be able to see that!

With intense concentration, he tried to recall all of the marvelous things he had achieved during his lifetime, so he’d be ready to talk to God.

Suddenly God appeared before him and sat down in the other empty chair. It is good to see you, God began. So tell me, how do you think you did?

The man breathed an enormous sigh of relief to hear that this was the question God was asking the one question he was sure he could answer. Feeling confident, he began: Well, I thought you might ask that, so I’ve made a short list of my accomplishments. I wanted to own my own business and become financially successful, and I did that. I wanted to have a good marriage, and I stayed married until my wife passed away—fifty-two years! I wanted to put my two children through college, and I did that. I wanted to own a luxurious home, and I did that. I wanted to learn to play golf and break ninety, and I did that. I wanted to buy a boat, and I did that. Oh, I can’t forget this one—I wanted to donate money to worthy causes on a regular basis, and I did that. The man felt quite satisfied with himself, hearing his own list. Surely God was going to be impressed.

So in conclusion, he declared, I would say without wanting to sound immodest or anything, that I did very well, considering I accomplished most of the things I set out to do. But of course, since you’re God, you knew all of this already.

God smiled kindly at the man. Actually, you’re mistaken.

Mistaken? the man asked. I don’t understand.

You’re mistaken, God repeated, Because I wasn’t paying much attention to the goals you achieved.

The man was taken aback. You weren’t? But I thought...

I know, God interrupted. Everyone thinks the better their life went, the more successful their life was. But it doesn’t work that way up here. I didn’t pay attention to all the times you got what you expected and hoped for, for that wouldn’t teach me much about what you were learning in your earthly existence. I was watching you most closely during all those difficult times when you encountered the unexpected, the things you did not plan on or want to happen. You see, it is how you dealt with these that reflects the growth and wisdom of your soul.

The man was stunned. He’d gotten it all wrong! He’d spent his whole life trying to do everything right. How should I know what lessons I learned from life’s difficult moments? he wondered in a panic. I never even liked to admit I had any problems. What am I supposed to tell God now?

For a moment, he was speechless, but never one for enjoying defeat, he soon got a second wind of energy. ‘Don’t just sit here!!’ he told himself sternly. ‘You never lost a negotiation on earth. Try again! Gathering up all of his confidence, he began once more:

Well, to tell the truth, God, I was just being polite before. Actually—and don’t take this personally—my life was hell! What hardships, what disappointments, what tests and trials! Let me tell you about the time my mother-in-law moved in with us for months. And then there was the time I passed two kidney stones—at once! And my youngest son, he was nothing but trouble. And my wife, don’t get me started on my wife or I’ll be here forever....

Take your time, God replied. I’m in no hurry...

In one way or another, we are all like the man in my little fable. We do our best in life to get things right. We make lists, set goals, study, train, learn, commit to our relationships and our dreams, get organized, pray, affirm and problem-solve, hoping to experience the happiness and success we imagine for ourselves. Yet, inevitably, all of us arrive at times when, in spite of how steadfastly we have worked, how well we have prepared, how deeply we have loved, things still don’t turn out the way we thought they would. No matter how hard we try, we cannot plan for the unexpected.

Whether these difficult surprises come in the form of small setbacks, horrible shocks, or gradual, painful awakenings, the result is the same: We end up face-to-face with jaw-dropping moments of unwelcome revelation when we realize to our great dismay that we are living a life that does not look like the one we wanted. And unlike the man in the story, we are usually not so quick with a snappy comeback to the unexpected. More often, we are left shaken, disoriented and desperate for answers.

After two decades of writing, researching and teaching about personal transformation, I’ve come to the conclusion that so much of the pain, confusion and unhappiness most people—including myself—struggle with comes from our encounters with the unexpected, in both our outer and our inner worlds. Try as we might, these encounters are inescapable, an inevitable part of being human. Even though each of us secretly suspects that we’re the only one whose life is so off-course or inexplicably unsatisfying, and that everyone else is deliriously happy, the truth is something quite different: All of us are lifetime warriors in a prolonged battle—with change, with reluctant endings and scary beginnings, with assessments and reassessments, with more moments of disappointment than we care to count.

Recently I was going through some old notebooks I’d kept from college, and I discovered a page I’d written in my early twenties listing my personal goals and dreams. As I read the items on my life wish list, I was astonished by two things. The first was that I had indeed accomplished many of the goals I’d set for myself over thirty years ago: to become a published author, to move to California, to teach people about relationships and personal growth, to create a community of conscious people, to travel to exotic places around the world, to study with wise spiritual teachers, to fall in love and have a beautiful wedding, to own a home, to perform onstage, just to name a few.

The second realization I had as I read the items I’d included was more sobering. I became aware of how many unexpected things had happened to me that certainly were not on my original wish list. I had not written: Get divorced... more than once; be cheated by dishonest business partners; lose lots of money in the stock market; create alliances with companies that go bankrupt; Battle unfair lawsuit; brave slanderous attacks by jealous colleague; lose dear friends to cancer. I certainly didn’t remember setting these events as goals, yet they had occurred just the same.

Then it dawned on me—like so many of us, like the clever man in the fable, I had always believed my challenges would lie in overcoming the obstacles to my goals. But I was wrong. My deepest turmoil has had nothing to do with the things I didn’t get, but rather with the things I did not expect, and got anyway.

It is not the things we want and don’t get that are the source of our greatest tests and trials— it is the things we do get that we did not want and never expected.

...

It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door, he used to say. You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.

—J. R. R. Tolkien

Addresses many issues that arise after unexpected losses. Very helpful in coming to terms with the event, not blaming oneself for the failure of a relationship. I think this is the most helpful book I have ever read on this subject and I recommend it to anyone who is still struggling with loss and accepting unfulfilled expectations.

There are NO coinsidences....
By DMK the CA Dreamer
This book shows that there are no coinsidences in our lives. I picked the book up at the library on CD and honestly didn't think that it applied to me. I half listened to it. For some unknown reason I renewed it and little did I know that I would be hanging on each word 1 wk later. My love relationship ended right as I renewed it. Thank Goodness for this book. I was and con't to make sense of why things happen when we least expect. She gives examples that ring too true in life, how to cope and that basicly all the feelings I was/am feeling are completely normal and I will move thru this time in my life. Lots of good quotes that make sense and how to apply them to everyday life after a major change has occurred.

A Stellar Book for Dealing with Life's Sudden Changes
By Barbara Rose
Barbara De Angelis, Ph.D. wrote an exceptional, heart felt and real book that teaches you how to both deal with and embrace change, as well as how to transform them into your life's greatest opportunities. Her writing style, as always, is genuine, compassionate and real. She has been there, and though this book you will learn exactly how to deal with whatever life may bring to you, when you least expect it.

There is one quote from this extraordinary book that I would like to share with you.
Page 61: "If a turning point is a moment when we find ourselves standing at a crossroads, a wake-up call feels more as if we have been hit by a truck and are lying on the ground in a state of shock. If a turning point is a big storm that creates some dust and disorder, a wake up call is the tornado that slams into our life and appears to blow everything into smithereens."

Barbara De Angelis shares how to overcome life's greatest wake up calls. Her pure wisdom, genuine guidance, and brilliant answers will take you to the heart of anything you may be facing so that you can genuinely know how to turn it all around. This is an exceptional book!

The Nanny Murders, by Merry Jones

Writing in the estimable tradition of Mary Higgins Clark, new mystery star Merry Jones rockets to the top of everyone's must-read list with her first exhilirating novel. The Nanny Murders is a mesmerizing page-turner about missing nannies who have disappeared, one by one, from a close-knit Philadelphia neighborhood. Zoe Hayes, who works as an art therapist in an institute for seriously deranged patients, is the single mother of an adopted (and adorable) little girl named Molly. Zoe gets involved in the missing nannies case when Molly makes a grisly discovery while playing in the snow--she finds a piece of litter that turns out to be a human finger. One of Zoe's neighbors (but which one?) seems to be a serial killer. Zoe and a mysteriously scarred detective named Nick Stiles team up to catch the killer when suddenly Zoe becomes the prey...

From Publishers Weekly
Single mom Zoe Hayes's life takes a turn for the macabre when she and her adopted five-year-old daughter, Molly, discover a severed finger on her normally safe sidewalk in nonfiction writer Jones's fast-paced, fun first mystery. Zoe's rapidly gentrifying Philadelphia neighborhood is now definitely more edgy than quaint: someone is dismembering nannies in the area. As nanny after nanny disappears, detective Nick Stiles approaches Zoe, an art therapist, for help in his hunt for the "nannynapper," and though his choice of her as a professional resource makes no sense to Zoe and less to the reader, the pair has chemistry, at least. Soon the two are flirting even as they clash over the details of the case. Longtime divorcée Zoe isn't sure what to make of having a man around ("He'd used my StairMaster?"), and it's a rocky road to romance, especially with a serial killer involved. Zoe, of course, is the murderer's next target. Jones serves up grim details, building suspense slowly at first, then with an accelerating pace that will leave readers breathless for the nuanced finale.

"Wow. What a zinger of a mystery! Zoe Hayes, like the inner-city block she lives on, is in perpetual, chaotic transition: a forty-one-year-old single mom intent on raising an adopted daughter, connecting with friends, and making a life that does not include nannynapping and murder. Zoe is smart, tough, and tender, the mystery is taut, the settings vivid, the characters authentic. This may be Merry Jones's first novel, but she is already an accomplished writer."

SHE NEVER REALIZED JUST HOW PERFECT…
Single parenthood is challenging enough for Zoe Hayes, raising a young daughter in Queen Village, a Philadelphia suburb whose homes--like its residents--have seen better days. Then comes the blustery afternoon when little Molly makes a shocking discovery while playing outdoors: a dismembered finger.

HER IMPERFECT LIFE REALLY WAS…
What Zoe longs to believe is a gruesome fluke quickly takes on unsettling significance. One by one, young nannies are vanishing from the neighborhood, falling victim to a shadowy killer. Uneasily drawn into the chilling case--and an unexpected relationship--by enigmatic Detective Nick Stiles, Zoe assumes she and Molly are safe. But then terror strikes close to home.

UNTIL SHE FOUND IT IN JEOPARDY…
Now, Zoe must accept that nobody in Queen Village is protected. A bloodthirsty predator lurks nearby, perhaps concealed behind a passing stranger's friendly smile, a longtime neighbor's front door--or, as Zoe fears most, perhaps even nearer than that...

"Absolutely fantastic."

fantastic thriller
By A Customer
Zoe Hayes lives in the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia with her five year old adopted daughter Molly. It is an ethnic mixed neighborhood caught between gentrification and stagnation, a place where she knows most of her neighbors and feels secure. That security is destroyed the day Molly plays in the snow and finds a woman chopped off nail polished finger. The police think that the digit belongs to one of the nannies who have recently disappeared from the neighborhood.

Detective Nick Stiles is in charge of the case and asks Zoe to look at the profile psychologist Beverly Gardner prepared. She believes that "The Nannynapper" is someone who lives or works in the neighborhood. She agrees to help out because as an art therapist for the mentally disturbed and familiarity with the neighborhood, she might have insights that Beverly missed. Little did she know that her decision would gain her a lover, become involved in a hostage situation, chased by a killer, and kidnapped by someone she thought of as a friend.

Merry Jones' debut fiction thriller is absolutely fantastic, a novel with so many unexpected twists and turns that readers will feel like they are on a fast merry-go-round. This is a character driven who-done-it it with plenty of action so THE NANNY MURDERS will appeal to a wide range of readers. The protagonist seems realistic; the neighbor next door one might visit to borrow a cup of sugar (or for the Atkins crowd - a pack of calorie free sweetener) and stay for coffee because she is so friendly.

Chills to the Bone!
By BeatleBangs1964
Zoe Hayes is a divorcee living in the Queen Villiage section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her adopted daughter, Molly who is five. She loves her neighborhood as she knows most of her neighbors and Molly, an extraordinarily bright child has playmates at her ready access.
The story starts off at a climactic point when Molly finds a dismembered finger in the snow. The finger is an intact woman's finger with a manicured and polished fingernail. The local police believe that the finger might have come from one of the nannies who has recently disappeared.
One detective, Nick Stiles makes this case his personal challenge. Zoe, an art therapist at a psychiatric institution agrees to lend her artistic perspective to the police efforts as she feels she just might have some further insight as to the identify of that finger.
This is an excellent novel replete with appealing characters. Molly, an aspiring gymnast has a body as lithe and agile as her sharp brain. I just loved it when she asked Zoe if the Tooth Fairy was "somebody you just made up" and that "Santa Claus is just a fake. Everybody knows Santa is really the parents." I love that! How lucky Molly was to know this at five and not run the risk of sounding naive by expressing belief in these myths at a much later age.
Nick is a delightful character and one that fits in nicely with the story. The ending, albeit predictable, makes for a very sweet story indeed.

A good book all around.
By Catherine
I won't summarize the story since that's already covered in the editorial reviews, so here's my review:

The Nanny Murders is written in first person which is an automatic good thing in my opinion because most books I read are in third person so it's a nice change. It also makes the mystery/thriller aspect of the book more exciting and intruiging; it's harder to deduce things from one person's view and when the main character (Zoe) gets suspicious/nervous/frightened, her emotions are easily carried onto the reader.

Aside from emotions associated with most mystery books, this book also has some light humor in it which I was not expecting at all. I never laugh at anything in books intended to be humorous so when I found myself chuckling at some the comments found within the pages it was a nice surprise. In case you're wondering, this does not distract from the story at all. The funny remarks are realistic and go with the storyline so you don't have to worry about something that's unbelievably absurd or nonsensical getting in the way of your reading.

There is a love story intertwined between Zoe and her secretive homicide detective, Nick. Following both the passions and questionable motives that Zoe has for and about Nick is a fun, twisting ride. I don't want to give away any spoilers but the circumstances of their relationship is definitely one that draws interest and keeps it. The only thing that might disappoint some people is the lack of a detailed sex scene. If you're looking for that, then this isn't the book for you. Even though it has no actual descriptions of sex,Merry Jones conveys their intensity, attraction, and longing very well so there's no loss of any substance anyways.

Regardless of what kind of book you read, this is just a good book, period. Merry Jones writes without either rushing or going on too long. Her characters trigger emotions about them and the story has a considerable amount of twists and turns right up until the last page. As a matter of fact, I think the ending leaves room for an equally engrossing sequel.

Much Ado About Jessie Kaplan, by Paula Marantz Cohen

From the bestselling author of Jane Austen in Boca, "another witty tale that combines classic literature with contemporary social comedy."---Hartford Courant

Carla Goodman's life in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is a little bit stressful these days. Her doctor husband is frazzled, her son's teachers say he needs Ritalin, and she's in the throes of planning her daughter's bat mitzvah. But it's her sweet widowed mother, Jessie Kaplan, who really has Carla worried, for Jessie has suddenly "remembered" that she was Shakespeare's Dark Lady of the Sonnets in a previous life. Can even the famed Dr. Leonard Samuels, psychiatrist and author of the self-help book, How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love My Mother-in-Law, help with a problem like this?
Witty, engaging, and wickedly observant, Much Ado About Jessie Kaplan is an unpredictable tale of love, loss, and family rites of passage.

From Publishers Weekly
A looming bat mitzvah and a mother who believes she's the reincarnation of Shakespeare's Dark Lady cause no end of trouble for the suburban heroine of this corny but hilarious second novel by Cohen (Jane Austen in Boca). Carla Goodman of Cherry Hill, N.J., is saddled with a 12-year-old daughter, Stephanie, who seems to be in "a perpetual state of PMS," a 10-year-old son, Jeffrey, who is "on his way to becoming a fifth-grade delinquent," and a gastroenterologist husband who is having trouble maintaining a private practice ("It's one thing to look up butts and get rich.... It's another to do it for nickel and dimes"). At the same time, Carla's widowed mother, Jessie, starts making references to mead and doublets, apparently remembering her former life as the Dark Lady of Shakespeare's sonnets. Cohen, who is developing a sparkling reputation for bringing the classics into contemporary fiction, paints in broad strokes but hits the mark with this domestic comedy. When Carla turns to renowned psychiatrist Dr. Leonard Samuels, famous for his bestselling How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love My Mother-in-Law, for advice, the humor escalates. Anyone-Jewish or not-who has ever attended a bat or bar mitzvah will find Cohen's take on the preparations and planning for this rite of passage spot on. By the end of this thoroughly entertaining romp, the author convincingly resolves all of Carla's family dilemmas with large doses of humor and heart.

Review
“Though Cohen's knack for gentle satire earns some terrific laughs, this buoyant novel's power stems from the author's deep sympathy for her conventional characters. She mocks, yes, but from a place of tremendous understanding.” ―Newsday

From the Back Cover
Praise for Jane Austen in Boca:

"Page-turner of the week...Austen never shmoozed by the pool with a pack of bronzed yentas, but her PRIDE plot proves as durable as ever...What's not to like?"
--People Magazine

"Utterly charming...think Pride and Prejudice, but with better weather."--Vanity Fair

"Cohen's wit is sharp, smart and satirical, and her characterizations are vividly on target."

Delightful tale, beautifully crafted
By A Customer
This is an absolutely delightful book. The plot is engaging, and the writing is elegant. Ms Cohen truly has a way with words, and the book is loaded with expertly crafted turns of phrase. The writing is Austen-esque, with its superb portrayals of the minutiae of daily life and its detailed look at the comedy of manners that is the life of its characters. The humor is engaging, drawing snorts of laughter and of recognition as situations arise that are, at least by analogy, part of my own life.
This books deals impeccably and elegantly with several themes of the human comedy. These include: the rite of passage into adulthood that is the bar (or bat) mitzvah (fabulous portrayal of a twelve-year-old girl here), several rites of passage for adults, including maturing into true adulthood, mid-life crises, and coping with aging parents, and the rite of passage that is aging itself (we should all be as lucky as Jessie!).
This is a wonderful book, and a worthy second novel (not a sequel) to the glorious Jane Austen in Boca, Ms Cohen's first novel.

A second wonderful book from Ms. Cohen
By A Customer
I enjoyed Ms. Cohen's first book, Jane Austen in Boca, so much, that when I saw that she had published a second novel, I did a little dance in front of my computer. She writes the type of book in which kind, funny, intelligent people do their best to live honorable lives despite all the obstacles that the world (and often their families and friends) throw into their paths. The characters are vivid, their problems are universal. It's lovely, smart and beautifully written book.

Fun, but not deep
By D. Plotkin
This novel was a fun little romp, especially for those who have at least a basic understanding of Shakespeare's plays. I'm not sure the end of the Jessie Kaplan plot was well explained or reasoned out, it felt too sudden (I can't give more detail for risk of ruining the plot).

My main criticism is that Cohen, while desciribing the Bar/Bat Mitzvah culture of East Coast Jews (Midwest and south is a bit more reserved), missed an opportunity to make a sharper critique of the situation in which the ceremony is downplayed and the party is the main event. Certainly Cohen issued a critique of this culutre, but it is weak at best and with a bit more humor and even exaggeration she could have made a point more forcefully. The main charachter, Carla, seems downright uninterested in the ceremony, except for the speech, for most of the book.

Good poolside reading. YOu won't gain any deep insights into the human condition. I hope that Cohen wasn't trying for that, or she missed badly.
