KEN TUCKER is Editor-at-Large for Entertainment Weekly and the magazine’s TV critic. He has won two National Magazine Awards, two ASCAP Deems Taylor music awards, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism. Say Hello To The Bad Book

There's clearly a great book about SCARFACE and how it went from box office disappointment to global phenomenon, attaining a lofty place in popular culture... but this cheap knockoff isn't it. Simply put, Ken Tucker is not the man for the job. Pedantic and insipid, his tome is borne from the intent to ride a gravy train as opposed to having genuine affinity for the subject matter. While this SCARFACE book is a shrewd commercial move, it's a creative misfire and you're better off just watching the bonus features on the deluxe DVD. Better yet, why not buy a cool black velvet painting of Tony Montana from a service station. It's a better investment.

Christmas comes early for "Scarface Nation"

For anyone who loves Scarface -- and what kind of a fiend doesn't? -- "Scarface Nation" is an unbelievable cornucopia of inside information, fascinating facts, and linkages to past and present American culture. This book -- henceforth to be known as the "Scarface Bible" -- is incredible not only because of it's focus on the actual movie, but because of Tucker's ability to tie in everything from politics to Miami Vice to MTV Cribs. His description of the 2006 porn epic "Lady Scarface" -- which clocks in at 3 hours long (only one hour shorter than a Viagra warning) -- is so compelling and explicit that I need to remember not to leave this book anywhere my 8 year old daughter might pick it up. If you are into Scarface -- and if you are reading this review I would have to assume you are -- you really need to get this. It would be enough that it is crammed full of things you NEED to know about, but the fact that it is all pulled together by a world class pop culture observer and scribe like Ken Tucker is almost too good to be true. Mr. Tucker, you have made 2008 a great year for the members of "Scarface Nation". As a native of Boston, I only wish that "Red Sox Nation" had as much to be happy about.

In Roberts's entertaining, fast-paced Roman historical, his eighth to feature Decius Caecilius Metellus (after 2003's The Tribune's Curse), Decius has just become an aedile, a city manager responsible for overseeing urban infrastructure, when he's summoned to a fatal building collapse that claims more than 200 lives. While the evidence of shoddy workmanship is consistent with the pervasive but tolerated corruption in the construction trade, Decius's trained investigative eye notes anomalies on several of the corpses; he risks his political future and his life to follow the clues. His powerful family's efforts to navigate the treacherous shifting alliances that preceded Julius Caesar's return from the Gallic Wars add to the pressures the aedile faces. Once again, Roberts does a nice job of bringing the past to life, though his scholarship and detail fall short of Steven Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa series, which serves as the gold standard for ancient historicals. Despite the small universe of suspects and a solution involving nearly as much luck as dogged legwork, the book's many fine qualities should boost the ranks of Roberts's readers and send newcomers in search of the previous entries.

Enjoyable series

I found this to be another enjoyable entry in an entertaining series. The SPQR series is set in the last days of the Roman Republic, as powerful men, including Julius Caesar, Pompey, Crassus, and various lesser figures, including the heads of criminal gangs within the city of Rome, compete against each other to gain power over Rome. Each novel in the series fits a mystery plot into actual historical events of the period. The protagonist, a young nobleman who is an idealistic believer in the Republic, always fights hard not only to solve the mystery confronting him, but also to protect the Republic. An intrepid investigator, he invariably solves the mystery, but sees the Republic nevertheless growing ever more endangered as the series progresses.
While the main characters are not as strongly created as those in Lindsey Davis' somewhat similar mystery series, set later during the Roman Empire, the author's wryly humorous reinterpretations of Roman history and the figures who shaped it never fail to entertain.

Addictive Stuff

The SPQR mysteries are not very good value for money. I get one in the afternoon mail and must finish it before bed time. I never seem to get a second day reading experience for my money.

I have read all of them now and am impatient for the next one to be finished. Damn things are addictive.

As brilliant as ever

Decius Quintus Caecilius Metellus is back for his eighth installment and JMR doesn't disappoint.

It's the interregnum of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio Nasica and our erstwhile hero is three months into his first aedileship having returned from Gaul from his previous outing with Julius Caesar. Being responsible for the maintenance of Rome's public buildings and highways he finds himself picking over the rubble of a collapsed insula, while some astute observations from Hermes, his irreverent personal slave, leads him to commence an investigation of a shoddy construction business that has claimed the lives of the slaves Galatea and Antaeus and over two hundred more inhabitants. And all this whilst he is preparing his own costly munera in order to fulfil his political ambition.

As ever, the culprits are somewhat higher up the political ladder than he initially thinks and several warnings from people including his own paterfamilias do not deter our sleuth with a reputation for intractable honesty from launching into a full investigation. Both he and Hermes work their way through dishonest construction foremen, previous aediles, censors, brothels, the Cloaca Maxima and the Forum before uncovering a crime of passion that was merely a pointer to a greater corruption. In the end the initial deaths were some what justified and Decius neatly sinks two great men during an eventful four days, during which the Tiber river floods ensuring, as Marcius Porcius Cato so neatly concludes: "the finest manifestation of divine will in my lifetime".

As ever there are an assortment of colourful characters including Caninus, Marcus Aemilius Scauras, Justus, Harmodias, Lucilius, Folius and Messala. With him are the Greek physician Asklepiodes and his wife Julia, niece of Caesar.

The cast move around Decius with slow inexorability as his Socratic sleuthing takes him into the mire of truth in a manner that is perfect to read. JMR took a long break after the opening novel of the SPQR series but his return in recent novels has proven a major success in the world of the ancient murder mystery. Whilst he showed the likes of Saylor and Davis what to do all those years ago, his newest efforts are right up their with them. Any fan of the genre must read and own JMR's SPQR series and I eagerly look forward to `The Princess and the Pirates'.

Antiques are Great, but sleuth is swishy

I am reading the entire series, but Jane K. Cleland's DEADLY APPRAISAL is weak on plot and long on swishy waterworks. As always the research on antiques & collectibles is first rate, but there is nothing special about this addition to the series.
It may have been because she is always reacting with little provocation to do so. It wasn't difficult to figure out who-done-it, which spoiled the story. I may have missed something, but since there was never any evidence of a phone tap all the meetings with Wes really didn't produce anything.
A director a charity is poisoned at a gala dinner, a Chinese export tureen is stolen, someone tries to run Josie down and Ty is on the West Coast.
Love the series for the antiques. Read this one at your leisure.

Cleland is tops

This is the second book in this series, and she has another title coming out soon! These books are well written, tight, exciting mysteries. Cleland researched her background well; bits of information about antiques, the appraisal process and the proving of provenance are interwoven into the stories. Truly good reads.

I really wanted to like this book, but I can't.

Josie Prescott is a transplanted New Yorker who has moved to a small town in New Hampshire to open her own antiques business. As in the first book of the series, she is quickly pulled into a murder and becomes embroiled in the police investigation that ensues.

The book has good bones, if you will. There is a lot of potential there, but the execution of the book leaves just about everything to be desired. First and foremost, Josie whines, ALL the time. She is constantly crying, or fighting tears, or closing her eyes and breathing deep to get herself together. I think she has a mini breakdown in every chapter. She constantly bemoans her lack of friends, her unsure love life, and the grevious wrongs done to her at her last job. Enough already! I was so disgusted by this constant carrying on that I almost put down the book without finishing it.

Second - Josie re-hashes 'words of wisdom' from her late father ad nauseum. Again, in every chapter, at least once, we have to hear dear ole Pop's nuggets, even though they aren't particularly insightful. Unless the author plans to bring back Dad as a ghost, it is way past time for Josie to stop re-running her father's business advice in her head.

Third - Cleland makes a big deal out of the fact that Josie knows next to nothing about her employees, including the ones she entrusts with her entire busines. Everytime there is a crime, Josie finds reason to question whether or not her employees are the theives or the killers. Inevitably, she discovers they are innocent and then bursts into tears of happiness. Once is understandable, but multiple times in the first two books of the series is way too much. Either investigate these people and trust them, or don't. Conveniently, despite all of these people being investigated by police multiple times, Josie never learns any of the deep, dark secrets that Cleland hints the supporting characters are harboring.

As I said in the title, I really wanted to like both of the books in this series, but I just can't get past the annoying, neurotic main character. Other things can be overlooked or done better in the next book, but unless this character grows up and gets it together, I will not be reading the third installment.

What you see is what you get

I felt compelled to write a review because the only other one gives it 1 star because it had puzzles from another book!

The puzzles in this book are well done, easy but not too easy (I've only finished a few alone). The book is well made and sturdy and holds up well in the bathroom where we keep it.

If you are looking for great puzzles to work the mind and don't own every other crossword book by Will Shortz this is the crossword puzzle book for you.

The NYT puzzles start out easy on Monday and grow progressively more challenging through the end of the week. This is a Monday-Tuesday book of puzzles.

I got this and other NYTimes crosswords for my husband. He loves them. I saw previous reviews that there were duplicates in this one from other books...but he said he has not found any yet. Will keep buying this series...as he loves them.

Michelle Anthony, M.A., Ph.D., and Reyna Lindert, Ph.D., are child development researchers and educators. They founded Wide-Eyed Learning, LLC, which teaches parents and educators the Signing Smart approach to using ASL signs with hearing babies and toddlers. They live with their husbands and signing children in Centennial, Colorado, and Beaverton, Oregon, respectively.

Great parent-child interaction tool!

I have a 5 month old son who is not quite old enough to be signing yet; however, the book contains a load of fun games and songs you can play with your child. My little one and I love singing, signing and playing together. I find this book to be an invaluable resource. I plan to buy a copy for anyone I know who is expecting. I also love the way the sign illustrations are not just crude drawings but actual people and babies showing you how to make the signs. As someone who has never done sign language, I have found it very easy and fun to learn.

Wonderful!

When my baby was born I didn't know if I wanted to sign with her. I knew that research studies have shown that many babies who sign start speaking later and I certainly didn't want that to happen. Now that my baby is six months old I have put those concerns aside. Very early on I started speaking to my baby using patterns sometimes just vowel sounds, then consonant/vowel combinations, then "cat", "rat", "sat" sequences and she was facinated. I used very specific words and said things the same way each time so she'd aquire meanings for the words. I also started finger spelling to her the words we commonly used. She loved it! Just with doing that my baby was babbling with her voice/mouth and with her hands by three months!

At five months I decided that I wanted to sign with my baby because she gets so frustrated with not being able to communicate what she wanted. I did not want to have to go through this for the next year or more while I wait for her speech to develop, so I went looking for materials. I sign some ASL and a lot of "straight" English and wish I signed better ASL since it is more efficient and useful. Because of this I decided I wanted to start her off with ASL (American Sign Language). I was refered to this book along with the "Sign with Your Baby" video by Garcia. I'm so glad I did.

This book starts out with the whys - why sign, why ASL, and gives so many wonderful examples. True, if you already want to sign this might not be so useful to you, but I really enjoyed the heartwarming stories of babies communicating what they really needed to say or just wanting to learn more about their world. And some of these babies were signing at four months of age! She also gives examples of babies who started using language more quickly once they started signing.

Most of the rest of the book are activities to do with your baby to teach and use the signs - and my favorite part - pictures of babies signing. While this book isn't terribly useful for someone who knows instinctively (or otherwise) what to do, it is very useful for those of us who do or don't know most of the signs and are just having a hard time coming up with ideas on what to do to create the opportunities to use them. I've also found this book helps me identify my own baby's efforts.

Please note that ASL (American Sign Language) is exactly that - the sign language used by the Deaf communities in the United States. Other parts of the world use different sign languages.

At the end of this book is a typical sign dictionary and after that is a dictionary that explains how a baby might do each sign. I am sure they separated these so it was quick to look up the picture you needed so you can sign it, but it would have been useful to have the description of how your baby might do the sign with the pictures. It would have been really nice if they could have put some of the pictures of babies signing these signs with these descriptions too. I know I would have spent more time lingering in this section if they had.

So, in the end all you need to sign with your baby is an ASL sign language dictionary and keen observation of your baby for his/her own signs. But if you feel you need some suggestions and tips I'd recommend this book and the "Sign with Your Baby" video. Oh yes, after only three days of signing my baby was signing "milk" and "finished", a couple days later "potty" and a few days after that "up" ...she will be seven months old next week. We couldn't be happier.

Wonderful Book!

I bought this book while I was pregnant with my daughter. Being much interested in teaching my child ASL I was happy to find this book. In reading it, it has helped me so very much with understanding the proper way to teach signs. We started at 5 and 1/2 months old and now at 11 1/2 months old she does 3 signs on her own. I love the fast refrence index of signs in the back plus all the Q&A. It really is a great book and has been invaluable in my teaching my child ASL. I highly reccomend this book, its a definate must have!!

This book have saved my life!

Besides this book being fascinating, I mean I felt the stories of people and their personal dramas spellbinding. But this book is different than anything else I have ever read. I have read 100's of books and when they are finished they are finished. But the Genesis Prayer lives on. I tried using the prayer a few times to catch a cab in the pouring rain during off duty periods. The first time it worked I thought hmmm a coincidence; the second time ---interesting, BUT the 3rd time I thought hey, maybe there is some truth to what Meiliken is offering. To be able to get a cab easily when it usually takes a half an hour or more in these conditions is nothing short of a miracle.

But one day I really put it to the test. One evening I felt a large lump on my breast. I was really scared. I am a young mother and feared the worst that I wouldn't be around to raise my children. I barely slept that night. The next day I called my OBGYN and she told me to come in the next day. She scheduled me for a mammogram and sonogram a week later.

In the mammogram session the doctor told me that she did see something that looked abnormal and needed to do more x-rays at different angles. The lab. tech then did a few more x-rays, which the doctor then analyzed. She then came back and said that they needed more x-rays to really focus in on the parts that seemed to be at risk. I was petrified and shaking as I sat in the waiting room clasping my husband's hand, waiting for more x-rays. Just then my husband reminded me about this book I had been raving about. He said why not try it. You sure could use a miracle, honey. I started to do the 42 word prayer over and over again, meditating on the line that Meiliken says is for healing. I must have said the prayer a dozen times during the next set of x-rays. The doctor then came to me and said that she looked at the last set of x-rays and gave me a clean bill of health. A big sigh of relief! This prayer may have saved my life.

Now I do this prayer every day and I see amazing things happen right before my eyes. I think that every one should get this book. It only takes a few minutes. It's easy and it brings miracles- big and small every time.

a Very good book

What makes me interested in purchasing this book is the fact that the book is authored by a mathematician. I'm a physicist therefore, at first, I am very much interested in the mathemathical aspects of the book rather than the so-called miracle claimed in the book's title. The author has done terrific job in deciphering the codes. This book gave me a new perspective for the bible and wisdoms contained within it . As for the miracles, I was extremely skeptical at first, but soon after, when I give it a try, I found myself even more amazed by many "lucky coincidences" that happened in my life. In other word, IT WORKS! A word of advice, from my experience, miracles don't happen instantaneously and I found out I realized it later because often times it took a completely different form of miracles from what I had I expected. But don't take my word for it. Try it yourself. Overall, this is a very nice book. Well done, Jeff.

I got a true miracle because of this book

This book amazed me. Believe it or not this prayer actually works. I was truly shocked. I bought the Genesis Prayer just before visiting family in Toronto, Canada. My cousin's wedding was great, but it was now Sunday and I had to be back in Chicago to take care of my three young children by Monday morning. My husband always helps out and somehow managed with the three of them on his own for the weekend, but he had to be at work first thing Monday morning and we couldn't afford for him to take off time from work. I had to get the children to school. It was imperative that I be back on time.

When I arrived at the Air Canada ticket counter in the Toronto airport, the check-in clerk asked to see my ID. I showed her my permanent residency card and she shook her head and asked for my passport. When I told her that I never use my passport to travel from US to Canada and that I only use the residency card, she cringed and replied, "They've changed the rules. You can try, but I doubt they'll let you through customs." Panic set in. As I rushed to the customs area I saw that there were signs everywhere saying PASSPORTS ARE REQUIRED FOR EVERYONE ENTERING THE UNITED STATES

What was I going to do? I knew that reasoning with US customs officials was futile. RULES ARE RULES. And things were worse now with Homeland security, much worse. I also knew it would take at least 2 days to get my passport by Fed Ex. I couldn't breathe. My kids' faces kept flashing in my head. Then I remembered the book I just finished reading and all those miracles people had. I reached into my bag and quietly recited the Genesis Prayer while waiting in line-all 42 words-all the while thinking how much I wanted to be home with my family. I begged for the prayer to work for me too.

It happened so fast I couldn't believe it. Not a minute after I finished the prayer the customs officer asked me to step forward. He looked at my documents without saying a word and stamped the departure card, sending me on my way. He didn't even gesture about a passport, nothing. I was in shock, grateful, but totally surprised. I rushed to the gate before he could change his mind.

What happened? It could only have been due to this amazing prayer and book. It really works. To Mr. Meiliken, my family thanks you so much. Everyone who needs a miracle any time in his or her life should use this prayer. It worked for me. That is why I wanted to tell people about it

Not an unpleasant book but an informative one

The claim on the back of "The Truth Behind A Series of Unfortunate Events: Eyeballs, Leeches, Hypnotism, and Orphans--Exploring Lemony Snicket's World" is that this volume is the "ultimate unauthorized companion guide to the facts behind Lemony Snicket's wild world." Since this is the only one I have seen it is hard to say whether that is hyperbole or not. What Lois Gresh has done in this book is to look beneath the fiction into the realities of the Lemony Snicket universe. Violet Baudelaire likes to invent things, so Gresh explains how to build a telephone and a hot-air balloon mobile home and throws in some fascinating tidbits about who really invented the telephone and little-known facts about hot-air balloons. Young readers will also be able to read about real child inventors and their amazing inventions. The information provided is much more expansive than you would find in an annotated edition of something, but that is the general intent.

Gresh has authored books on "The Computers of Star Trek" and "The Science of Superheroes," so stopping and taking time to explain things we just take for granted in enjoying stories is apparently her forte. So there are chapters devoted to "What Happens to Real Orphans," "Strange Snakes, Lizards, and Toads," "Martial Law: Can an Old Geezer Marry a Young Girl?", "Picking Locks, Horseradish, and Peppermints," "Work, Slave Work! Child Labor Laws," "Crabs, Fungi, Staples, and Leeches," and "I Want to Be Someone Else." If you have read the Lemony Snicket books then you will know which chapters look at the "reality" behind which books (e.g., the last in the list explains how Count Olaf would disguise himself in the real world). Then there are chapters that are devoted to testing your knowledge about "Really Bad Grammar" and "Fancy-Pants Words." You can also test yourself to see if you are as smart as Violet and Klaus (or Sunny when she was one) on questions that are related to what happens in the series and other that are not.

For many readers what their enjoyment of this book will not come down to how it conveniently provides information about topics of interest regarding the world of Lemony Snicket, but how much the attempt to emulate the narrative style and look of the books bothers them. The book is the same dimension as the Lemony Snicket volumes, but without the rough edges of the paper. The illustrations are done in pencil in the style of Brett Helquist and as long as they are not showing any of the Baudelair orphans they are decent enough (I suppose from a legal standpoint none of the images are "really" of any of the characters in the books but that little point of irony does not help this volume). Most importantly (or not) Gresh tries to adopt the writing style of Lemony Snicket, but without the same sort of success (i.e., she tries too hard). This book works better when she is just providing information and leaving the comedy to the original stories because this is not an unpleasant book, it is an informative one. There are some attempts at analyzing symbols and motifs in the books, but, again, it is the informational aspect rather than the analysis that the legion of Lemony Snicket fans who stumbled across this volume will enjoy.

How could these unfortunate events be possible?

I've read all of Lemony Snicket's books. I love every one of them. This new book by Lois Gresh is the perfect companion to Lemony's books. The Truth Behind a Series of Unfortunate Events tells you everything you ever wondered about - like Count Olaf's tattoo and all the eye motifs in the

series: what does the eye mean and why does Lemony use it so much? This book gives you some bigtime clues based on real facts. How could Count Olaf possibly appear as so many different people, both men and women of all ages in all kinds of occupations, and actually get away with it? This book tells you how he does it! This is a book for kids who want to know how Lemony came up with Violet's inventions, how to pick locks, how someone can be allergic to peppermints, what happens to real orphans, and whether disgusting ancient guardian Counts can really marry young girls who are supposedly in their legal care. This is a 'tell all' book. If you're a Lemony Snicket fan, then you need this book.

A very entertaining read.

I have read all the books in the Lemony Snicket series, and I have loved them. The same is true for this book.

Picking it up, one may be skeptical, but once you get into it, you cannot put it down. I received the book three days ago, and I have already read it three times.

It has a wide variety of interesting and fun facts that you can share with all your friends. Aside from those, this book is very humorous. A few of my friends have picked up a copy of the book also, and they all love it!

You learn new things about the series you would have never known had it not been for this book. The author bedazzles the reader with a wide variety of facts about the series and exciting spin-offs.

I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoyed the series, and you should go pick up a copy of it NOW!
