The Death of the Grown-Up: How America's Arrested Development Is Bringing Down Western Civilization, by Diana West

"WHERE HAVE ALL THE GROWN-UPS GONE?" That is the provocative question Washington Times syndicated columnist Diana West asks as she looks at America today. Sadly, here's what she finds: It's difficult to tell the grown-ups from the children in a landscape littered with Baby Britneys, Moms Who Mosh, and Dads too "young" to call themselves "mister." Surveying this sorry scene, West makes a much larger statement about our place in the world: "No wonder we can't stop Islamic terrorism. We haven't put away our toys!" As far as West is concerned, grown-ups are extinct. The disease that killed them emerged in the fifties, was incubated in the sixties, and became an epidemic in the seventies, leaving behind a nation of eternal adolescents who can't say "no," a politically correct population that doesn't know right from wrong. The result of such indecisiveness is, ultimately, the end of Western civilization as we know it. This is because the inability to take on the grown-up role of gatekeeper influences more than whether a sixteen-year-old should attend a Marilyn Manson concert. It also fosters the dithering cultural relativism that arose from the "culture wars" in the eighties and which now undermines our efforts in the "real" culture war of the 21st century―the war on terror. With insightful wit, Diana West takes readers on an odyssey through culture and politics, from the rise of rock ‘n' roll to the rise of multiculturalism, from the loss of identity to the discovery of "diversity," from the emasculation of the heroic ideal to the "PC"-ing of "Mary Poppins," all the while building a compelling case against the childishness that is subverting the struggle against jihadist Islam in a mixed-up, post-9/11 world. With a new foreword for the paperback edition, "The Death of the Grown-up," is a bracing read from one of the most original voices on the American cultural scene.

From Publishers Weekly
West, a Washington Times columnist with a hard-line conservative's interest in culture, sounds a dire alarm over an age she sees marked by the mainstreaming of countercultural behavior. An unprecedented reversal of priorities from parents to children has occurred since the 1950s, according to West, allowing for structural failures that permitted the behavioral revolutions of the 1960s to go forward unimpeded. To support her case, West draws on sources generally weighted to the right end of the political spectrum, like Robert Bork and Daniel Pipes. Her examination of the social repercussions of a new youth market would be better grounded within the context of the transformations in postwar American society, but she focuses instead on the negative aspects of these large and complex changes, without reflecting on her underlying assumptions. In her view, the prolonged adolescence of baby boomers has left America open to an insidious Islamization of culture via a misconceived political correctness that can't recognize the dehumanizing ideology of that religion. West, a vocal purveyor of distrust toward Islamic cultures, lays nothing less than the decline of Western civilization on the American counterculture, making her argument compelling only to those already in her corner. From Booklist
Writing in the Washington Times and elsewhere, West has proven to be a caustic critic of contemporary popular culture as well as a hawkish detractor of Islam. With this book, she fleshes out her archconservative worldview by arguing that today's popular culture is complicit in the threat posed to America by Islamic terrorists, and that the 1960s counterculture is to blame. In rejecting time-honored notions of adulthood (read: modesty, self-discipline, respect for authority) in favor of decadence and inclusiveness, she argues, the baby boomers inaugurated a culture of perpetual adolescence that erodes Western cultural identity. Channeling Samuel Huntington, West claims that this erosion of identity renders us incapable of countering potentially existing threats with adequate resolve and harshness. Although its first chapters weave together some anecdotal musings about the rise of youth culture, readers primarily interested in historical analysis might do better elsewhere. Readers seeking a sweeping polemic against the cultural Left, however, will enjoy this jeremiad's fiery indignance and playfully cutting prose. Driscoll, Brendan

Important Insight Into the 20th and 21st C American Psyche
By E. Wagner
Although, for me, The Death of the Grownup dragged a bit through the middle, I came away feeling it is a valuable and important read for anyone trying to understand why we are currently losing the war that Islam is waging against the West.

In The Death of the Grownup, author Diana West builds a convincing case for revolutionary change in Western thinking and behavior. She argues a widespread abdication of adult responsibilities and choices has seriously harmed the West, and she traces the negative impact the culture of what she calls "eternal adolescence" has had on Americans and, more broadly, on all of Western Civilization. West also explores underlying reasons for this dysfunction.

Among several examples of the harmful effects of abdicating adult responsibility, West points to multiculturalism. She posits that instead of looking at the world through the eyes of an adult, who sees differences and makes value judgments, multiculturalists insist that all societies are equal, even though it's obvious that some are more healthy and desirable to live in than others. Says West, to be effective, adults must make decisions; not avoid them. Adults must make choices; not shield our eyes from politically incorrect differences.

West ultimately argues that the culture of eternal adolescence is so deeply embedded in the Western psyche that, unless we begin to nurture the prizing of virtues, or unchanging moral standards, as opposed to moral relativism, or values, which are malleable, we risk the loss of Western Civilization and its many achievements to a resurgent Islamic Civilization, relatively unchanged from its 6th century culture of Islamic supremacism, jihad and conquest.

This is a horrible book. Diana West documents affluent Americans that are ambivalent concerning authority & consistently absolve themselves & their ofspring of responsibilty.

The Peter Pan Syndrome Explored
By Nelson W. Lentz
This is a brilliant and most important work. To quote the liner notes, "No wonder we can't stop Islamic terrorism. We haven't put away our toys! As far as West is concerned, grown-ups are extinct. The disease that killed them emerged in the fifties, was incubated in the sixties, and becanme an epidemic in the seventies, leaving behind a nation of eternal adolescents who can't say no, a politically correct population that doesn't know right from wrong." If everyone in America who can read would read this book and understand what it says, we would have a good chance of defeating the Islamic world conquest that is underway right now and preserving Western civilization for ourselves, our children , and all the generations to come.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of April 2016: Augusten Burroughs’s latest autobiographical offering is a tale many of us can relate to: In our search for true love, we have kissed a few (perhaps dozen) frogs, and dated utterly inappropriate people because they were simply too cute to resist, or really good in…social situations. While it can be painful to ruminate on our own struggles in this regard, reading about Burroughs’s relationship failures (and successes!) is anything but. Lust & Wonder delivers on what you’d expect from the lauded author of Running with Scissors--the kind of wit, profundity, and keen appreciation of the absurd that tempers what could otherwise be cynical subject matter. The lines between lust and love can be blurry, but your ardor for this memoir will not be ambiguous. --Erin Kodicek

He's back! The brutal honesty and caustic wit that we loved in "Dry", with added maturity.
By ZenWoman
Thank goodness that the Augusten Burroughs of Dry is back in his latest memoir. Wolf at the Table, his last memoir, was all about his father, and was one of his weakest books. Running with Scissors was his most celebrated book, but it was perhaps more because of the shock value of his childhood experiences. Dry touched my heart a little more as he searched for love and self-affirmation and wasn't afraid to expose his innermost feelings.

Lust and Wonder brings back that Augusten I like best - the caustic wit, brutal honesty, and his endearing neurosis. He lays his soul bare for all to see, and though we may have not gone through the same experiences, we empathize, for we all know what it is to be human, a little narcissistic, and struggle to find the relationships that we hope will complete us.

This book is divided into 3 main sections, and he delves into his 3 significant relationships since Dry, and also tells us a little more about his relationship with George, that he first shared with us in Dry. Going into them in depth would mean giving out some spoilers, so I'll just say, that he goes through some hits and misses until he realizes what was staring him in the face.

There has been a little hiatus between his memoirs, but I am happy to discover Augusten at 50 is just as brilliant as he was in his late 20s when he probably wrote Dry (it was the first book he wrote, but it was published 3rd). This book shows us a more mature side of Augusten, as he seems to examine his motivations more deeply and dare I say, despite his sarcasm, he seems kinder to his partners. To be honest, the book did seem to drag in parts, especially as he's stuck in relationships that seem to be going no-where, but he manages to get himself, and us, out of that quagmire of failed relationships by the end.

This novel definitely ends on a more hopeful note than some others he's written, and he gives us hope too, having survived the worst of experiences to be where he is today. If you've loved some of this previous works, you'll enjoy Lust and Wonder.

As usual-Entertaining and Insightful
By Bill Hastings
Having read all of Burroughs, I've enjoyed the journey through his psyche. Reading this last one, you can hear the peace he is finding. Having a dysfunctional childhood more often than not leads to a dysfunctional adulthood. Within this book the reader will find that learning to live in a healthy relationship is challenging to the mind of a self destructive individual. As usual there were times I actually giggled aloud. Occasionally when reading the healthy direction his life is heading, one will forget the crewed writing that represented the catastrophic life he once experienced, then suddenly a sentence slaps you in the face (in regards to the size of someone's dick) and you remember, "Oh yeah this is Burroughs." The impending doom he describes is depicted so accurately that as the book is wrapping up, the reader expects something devastating-at least for the reader who can relate. Look forward to future memoirs. - Angela Hastings

"It's so hard to trust what's inside another person..."
By B. Wilfong
I have read everything that Augusten Burroughs has published, and liked most of it. “Lust and Wonder” is not an exception. It is a fine quick read. However, it is an uneven book, with the first part much stronger than the latter.
This memoir basically chronicles Augusten’s path to married life and deals with three relationships that seem to have made him the man he is today. There are moments where anyone who has been in a serious long term relationship will cringe with recognition, and that is a good thing.
Be warned, Mr. Burroughs does not come off as especially likable in this text. In fact, I would say he is not at all likable. His comments about his past relationships are of course only one side of the story, and although he self-deprecates plenty in the text, I never noticed him taking real credit for his part in their demise. That is not a good or bad thing, it just is. Remember you are only getting one perspective. His ex (Dennis) really gets the rough treatment in this text, and frankly I think both of them made their relationship the mess it became.
Once Burroughs settles on the man who will become his husband (Christopher) the book slows down a lot, dealing with the minutia of married life. And that is okay. A contented life should not be all that crazy, in fact it should be downright everyday (or boring as the disingenuous would say).
“Lust and Wonder” has moments of great human truth in it, and I appreciated and enjoyed this quick read.

Nervous Water: A Brady Coyne Novel (Brady Coyne Novels), by William G. Tapply

In one of the finest novels yet in Tapply's long-running series, Nervous Water explores the previously hidden past of his much beloved character, Boston attorney Brady Coyne. Contacted by an aged relative with whom he'd long lost touch, Brady agrees to help his Uncle Moze with a sensitive family matter. Having received a diagnosis of terminal cancer, Moze is looking to mend fences with his only daughter. But the daughter seems to have simply disappeared, leaving no clues or hints as to her whereabouts. As Brady tackles the seemingly impossible task of finding his cousin - a case that looks less and less like a simple missing person case - it becomes clear that whatever is going on now is related to a dark, undiscussed episode in his family's past: the brutal, still unsolved murder of another of Brady's uncles.

From Publishers Weekly
Boston lawyer Brady Coyne tackles family troubles past and present in his compelling if slightly wordy 21st solo outing (after 2003's Shadow of Death). Coyne agrees to help his Uncle Moze, an aging Maine lobsterman, find Moze's daughter, Cassie, who hasn't been returning Moze's phone calls. Cassie's unfriendly new husband, dentist Richard Hurley, confirms her disappearance. Hurley isn't particularly forthcoming, perhaps because, as Coyne learns, both of his previous wives died under less than clear circumstances. An attack on Moze in his home and Moze's subsequent heart attack add urgency to Coyne's search. The murder of Cassie's former lover, English professor Grantham Webster, ups the ante. Meanwhile, Coyne's girlfriend, Evie Banyon, also seems to be hiding something. As ever, Tapply's strength lies in his convincing characters and dialogue, but on occasion he goes off on tangents, such as a mediation session between a divorcing couple. Still, this long-running series remains fresh and Tapply underrated as one of today's finest regional mystery writers.

From Booklist
Fans of Boston attorney Brady Coyne know plenty about the easygoing lawyer-sleuth's lifestyle: not much work, lots of fishing, good meals at Boston's finest restaurants, and the occasional murder case, whenever one of his friends finds a spot of trouble. What we don't know is much about Brady's past. That changes dramatically in this twenty-first installment of the long-running series. A phone call from Brady's uncle Moze, an avuncular lobsterman in rural Maine, sends the citified nephew on the road to reestablish ties after a 30-year hiatus. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Moze hopes to set things right with his estranged daughter, but he needs Brady to find her. The trail leads to other relatives on Brady's mother's side of the family and to what well may be a murder case. Tapply tackles the difficult issues of human relationships and family ties with his typically light touch, always underplaying the big moments but ever sensitive to "nervous water"--a fishing term for the look of the ocean when a school of fish is about to strike. Another winner in an always-satisfying series. Bill Ott

A fast-paced New England mystery
By Corinne H. Smith
Where is Cousin Cassie? Boston lawyer Brady Coyne needs to find her and reunite her with her ailing adopted father, Brady's Uncle Moze, before the worst happens. His search covers ground from his ancestral home in southern Maine to towns west of Boston and south to Rhode Island. Cassie's new husband and stepchildren are less than helpful and seem to know more than they're telling about her disappearance. The task gets even trickier when Cassie's previous boyfriend is murdered mere minutes before he can talk to Brady. Very few strands of a trail exist, and Brady diligently pursues each one of them. If Cassie's not responsible for the most recent attacks, then who is? At the same time, Brady is serving as a mediator to a couple planning divorce, and that causes him to debate the stability of his own two-year live-in relationship with Evie. His own reunion with Uncle Moze forces him to think about the family matters that he usually ignores.

With a storyline that's driven by dialogue, this is a fast read that can be finished in one or two sittings. Now that we know more about Brady's past, some of us may want to read (or re-read) the 23 previous episodes in the series at our earliest convenience.

I LOVE BRADY COYNE
By Tina
I am not a huge "mystery" genre lover. I much prefer a good thriller. However, Tapply and Brady Coyne are the exception to my rule.

Nervous Water is another entry into the Coyne series. I am never sure if I just really like Tapply's writing or if I just really like the character her created. Regardless, this book is another wonderful Brady Coyne story.

What makes these books so great is that Tapply has given his characters "real life" traits. They fight, make mistakes and work their way through the storylines at such a delightful and real pace that you can almost feel that they are real.

Nervous Water explores deep-rooted family issues intermingled with legal and personal issues. At the same time, being entertaining and a page turner.

I am not sure about the relationship between our main character and his "love". I always kind of feel that this does not work for Coyne and he should be single for a while.

Also, I do find it difficult to plod through all the fishing references made (and there are alot in this one). I know that Tapply is a fishing enthusiast, but I would love for him to figure out that there is a really good chance that most of his fans ARE NOT and that is why I give this book 4 instead of 5 stars.

Otherwise. Another perfect read.

Another page turner by William Tapply
By Patricia Ann
William Tapply has written another winner in his Brady Coyne series. All books will stand on their own. I won't give away the plot. (Read the Amazon summary and other reviewers)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and read it in two sittings. Lots of twists and turns, there are some surprises and some---well you could guess whodunit. Great book for beach, poolside or plane.

Knights of the Cross: A Novel of the Crusades (Novels of the Crusades), by Tom Harper

Knights of the Cross follows Tom Harper's critically acclaimed debut, The Mosaic of Shadows
Byzantium, 1098. Two years prior, the legions of armies of the First Crusade were called upon by the Byzantine emperor to reinforce his position as the mightiest power in Christendom. Fighting as mercenaries, and claiming no particular allegiance, their presence was strained within the city walls of Byzantium. But with their differences now settled, the armies of the First Crusade leave the emperor---racing across the vast stretch of Asia Minor, chasing the Turkish armies of the East.
As they continue to route the Turks and reclaim the stolen land for Christendom, the powerful armies are quickly halted. On the Syrian border, their advance is blocked before the impregnable walls of Antioch. As winter draws on, they are forced to suffer a fruitless, interminable siege---gnawed upon by famine, and tormented by the Turkish defenders. The perilous season leaves the entire crusade on a precarious verge of collapse.
In the midst of this freezing misery, rivalries, and divisions appear. Lines are drawn between the ruling princes; the lords and the men they command; and between the Byzantines fighting alongside the Western crusaders. So when the Norman knight, Drago, is found murdered, his lord, the ruthlessly ambitious Bohemond, charges Demetrios Askiates, unveiler of mysteries, with finding the murderer. As Demetrios investigates further, the trail seems to lead ever deeper into the vipers' nest of jealousy, betrayal, and fanaticism that lies at the heart of the crusade.
A separate army of Turkish infidels is sent to relieve Antioch. With danger looming within the crusader ranks, and impending battles headed their direction, time is running out, and Demetrios is forced to work with Bohemond to uncover the killer. And still the walls of Antioch are locked, with no key in sight---and no assurance that once the crusaders are inside, the battles will end.
The extraordinary story of the crisis of the First Crusade---a powerful novel of intrigue, sacrifice, savagery, and holy war. An amazing sequel to the acclaimed debut, The Mosaic of Shadows. "Gripping for its portrayal of the crusader leaders . . . this is a great example from a trustworthy historian."

Starred Review. British author Harper's excellent second historical whodunit, set in 11th-century Asia Minor during the Crusades, shows that his fine debut, Mosaic of Shadows (2005), was no fluke. As the First Crusaders are stuck in an interminable siege of Turk-held Antioch, Demetrios Askiates, a Greek assigned as scribe to the Byzantine emperor's representative, must once again play detective. The discovery of a Norman knight with his throat slit and bearing unusual markings on his corpse threatens the shaky alliance among the varied European armies of the First Crusade. Amid battles and political intrigues, Demetrios desperately pursues the few clues he has, even as the late Norman knight's companions, who may have joined him in promoting a new heretical sect, also turn up dead. Like Steven Saylor, the master of the ancient Roman historical, Harper effortlessly draws the reader into an unfamiliar time, bringing alive the characters and their motivations. (Aug.)

“Tom Harper’s speciality is a hitherto unvisited era in historical crime fiction. It’s a world which Harper brings exuberantly to life, clearly revelling in its teeming, tumultuous extravagance.”

Not Really a Mystery
By Judith A. Weller
If you are are looking for a Brother Cadfael type mystery then this is not the book for you. Actually the mystery part of it occupies very little space and is more of a sideline to the main story. This book is really about the siege of Antioch during the First Crusade. Tom Harper gives splendid character protrayals of the main protagonists of the that historical event.

The reviewer who complained about historical anachronisms just didn't know anything about the history of the Eastern Roman Empire. Let me educate him -- the Varangians were vikings who served as the guards of the Emperor in Constantinople. Look at any Historical Atlas for the period and you can see that Varangia to the inhabitants of Constantinople would have include all the lands of Greenland, Norway, Denmark -- ( i.e. lands where the vikings came from -- that was all known as Varangia. Being "schooled in" does NOT mean read or write -- it only means they could speak both Latin and Greek. And yes there were chimneys - it was something the Romans knew all about. Also female doctors were not uncommon in the Eastern Roman Empire when you remember that this was a Greek culture not a Western Medieval one. I mentions his in my review as I want people to understand how wrong that reviewer was and not to be influenced by his review.

Again this is a great novelization of the siege of Antioch and it gives you the "guts and glory" of the men of the first Crusade as well as how really almost "superhuman" their feat was. The Crusaders faced overwhelming odds and triumphed, but never made it to Jerusalem because of the green and venality of their leaders -- and the flaws of their leaders are rigorously exposed -- esp. that of Bohemond.

If anyone wants to capture the real flavor of the First Crusade then you should look no farther than this book. A great read!!

terrific Crusader Era whodunit
By A Customer
In 1098, former warring enemies have become allies in an attempt to win back the Holy Land from the Turks. The combined might of armies from the Byzantium Empire and western kingdoms seem invincible as victories pile up while crossing Asia Minor until Antioch, Syria. There the first major resistance occurs, leaving the allies at each other's throats as their recent hostilities remain fresh in everyone's mind.

Greek scribe to General Takitos, Demetrios Askiates and his friend Sigurd the Varangla of England are walking back from a skirmish when they come across a lad Simon acting hysterical as he shouts his master is dead. Demetrios looks at the corpse of the Norman Drogo, whose throat was sliced. Not long afterward, Norman leader Lord Bohemond asks Demetrios to investigate the murder fearing his men will retaliate against the Byzantine allies, leading to disaster. As he makes inquires while the Normans sneer, Demetrios learns that Drogo was seeing a camp follower Sarah while his tent mate threatens to kill the Greek sleuth.

KNIGHTS OF THE CROSS is a terrific Crusader Era whodunit starring a likable protagonist and his irascible but loyal friend. The story line in some ways is more historical than mystery though the sleuthing is top rate and fun to follow while it also enhances the deep look at the First Crusade. Fans of historical mysteries will want to read this strong thriller and Demetrios' previous starring in THE MOSAIC OF SHADOWS.

Mystery 2 stars: Crusade story 4 stars
By Stephen McHenry
The main character is weakly drawn, the murder mystery not quite believable in development or finish; it does not generate any who-dunnit interest or surprise. But the author has done alot of homework to set the scene of the Christian siege of Antioch and then, through a real life turn of events, the Christian defense against a siege as they are trapped inside Antioch, all with a actually-happened miraculous ending. The grit, sweat and barbarity of the first crusade is solidly told. Interesting book for a crusade story, not much for a Medieval murder mystery, as in Cadfael or Name of the Rose.

Power Play, by Joseph Finder

It was the perfect retreat for a troubled company.  No cell phones.  No BlackBerrys.  No cars.  Just a luxurious, remote lodge surrounded by thousands of miles of wilderness.
All the top officers of the Hammond Aerospace Corporation are there.  And one last-minute substitute -- a junior executive named Jake Landry.  He's a steady, modest, and taciturn guy with a gift for keeping his head down and a turbulent past he's trying to put behind him.
Jake's uncomfortable with all the power players he's been thrown in with, with all the swaggering and the posturing.  The only person there he knows is the female CEO's assistant--his ex-girlfriend, Ali.
When a band of backwoods hunters crash the opening-night dinner, the executives suddenly find themselves held hostage by armed men who will do anything, to anyone, to get their hands on the largest ransom in history.  Now, terrified and desperate and cut off from the rest of the world, the captives are at the mercy of hard men with guns who may not be what they seem.
The corporate big shots hadn't wanted Jake there.  But now he's the only one who can save them.
Power Play is a non-stop, pulse-pounding, high-stakes thriller that will hold the reader riveted until the very last page.

If Jake Landry, a tough guy with an understanding of airplane engineering and an innate grasp of corporate politics, is too good to be true, he's still fun to watch in this sleek thriller from bestseller Finder (Killer Instinct). A junior executive at California's Hammond Aerospace, Landry possesses a remarkably flexible intelligence, which lands him on a high-end corporate weekend at a lodge called Rivers Inlet, where the new CEO, Cheryl Tobin, discreetly asks Landry to help her identify corrupt executives. Almost immediately, the lodge is assailed by five men who at first appear to be hunters turned vicious at the sight of the weekend participants' enormous wealth. As they interrogate the executives, however, it becomes clear that they know quite a bit about Hammond and its workings. Landry's job, then, is to figure out their purpose as well as rescue the entire crew. Tight, fluid writing more than compensates for the occasional plot implausibility. 200,000 first printing; author tour. (Aug.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Fans agree that Joseph Finder (Company Man, 2005; Killer Instinct, ***1/2 Sept/Oct 2006) has perfected the corporate thriller, favoring the rocket engine of plot over the quiet architecture of character. His eighth novel, Power Play, races along by omitting the texture and depth that might slow the pace; only the protagonist, Jake Landry, is fleshed out. Critics acknowledge this flaw but forgive the author as they're dragged along by the fast-paced action. The New York Times suggests that Finder's novels "could appeal to a broader audience than the one for which they aim." Members of that broader audience might notice the flat characters and occasional clichŽs, but the suspense and tension will keep them turning the pages.

Jake Landry, who has been asked to step in for his boss and does not have quite as privileged a background, has brought the wrong clothes and the wrong attitude. When the lodge is overrun by a group of hunters, Jake suspects there's more to the scenario than a robbery, especially since the thieves are toting military-issue weapons. Finder's not much on dialogue and characterization (it's hard to keep all the egotistical businessmen straight), and he throws in just enough tech talk to give his story a realistic veneer. What he does do is hook his readers big time with an irresistible premise: watching the swaggering businessmen cower as a smart-mouthed former juvenile delinquent picks off the bad guys, one by one. Good read
By Nik Malvania
A little disappointing. With all his skills, the protagonist had never killed anyone in combat before the events in the book. Having said that, Finder has crafted a suspenseful novel that keeps the reader turning pages.

Fun Read!
By April Fool
This was a solid, suspenseful tale - corporate executives at a retreat in a hunting lodge in the middle of nowhere. Our hero is a last minute replacement for his boss and happens to have a useful past considering the circumstances. The whole executive group and lodge staff our held up by a small group of "hunters" who want large sums of corporate money wired to a specific offshore account. The hero's past slowly unfolds as the heist does. The author effectively examines the tension and management of the situation by the corporate execs. If you're a Joseph Finder fan, you will definitely like this book. If you have never read Joseph Finder, give this book a try.

Executive assistant kicks butt
By Mr. Joe
"Who the hell are you, Landry?" - Ali Hillman

Perhaps you yourself would ask that question if you'd just watched your heretofore mild-mannered significant other efficiently snap the neck of an assailant.

Jake Landry is the polite and self-effacing assistant to an Executive VP in Hammond Aerospace Corporation, a maker of "heavy" passenger planes. At the last minute, Jake is tabbed to attend a team-building retreat with the company's top level management in place of his boss, who's out of country on a crucial sales trip. Besides, Landry knows as much as anyone about Hammond's new H-880 jet, which may have design problems.

The retreat takes place at a remote fishing resort on the coast of British Columbia. The gathering has all the potential for bickering and back-stabbing as the otherwise all-male executive hierarchy gets to know its first female CEO, Cheryl Tobin, whose own executive assistant is Ali Hillman, Jake's ex-girlfriend. And if there wasn't tension enough to cut with a knife, the meeting is invaded during the first night's welcome dinner and taken over by five gun-wielding hard guys intent on getting 500 million dollars in ransom for the group, two of which members are soon executed as examples to the rest.

So, who's coming to the rescue? From the first couple of pages presented as a flash-forward, it's evidently going to be Jake for no reason that's readily apparent in the book's first chapters. Indeed, the meat of POWER PLAY is a slow revelation of Landry's past, via flashback to his teen years, which gives some clues as to his ability to do what he has to do to extricate the hostages from their terrifying ordeal.

At first, I thought Landry might be presented somewhat in the mold of the hero of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels (Bad Luck and Trouble (Jack Reacher Novels) et al), but the reader never learns as much about the former as the latter, and Jake, while obviously clever and intelligent, never quite achieves the powerful physicality and breadth of lethality that Reacher demonstrates. Indeed, the question that begins this review was never really answered to my satisfaction. I mean, how did Landry achieve the mindset to cut someone's throat, which is a vastly more personal and up-close way to kill somebody than just with a gun? Being in juvenile detention and the National Guard Reserve doesn't necessarily get you that.

If this was to be the first in a series by author Joseph Finder featuring Jake, then there would be the opportunity for further character exploration and discovery. But since that hasn't been Finder's writing m.o. to date, I suspect this to be a one-off adventure. As such then, for the reason given, I can only award four stars to an otherwise engrossing and edge-of-your-seat thriller. If I'm wrong about this being a stand-alone presentation, then I'll happily ratchet it up to five stars. Say it ain't so, Joe!

Intelligence: The Creative Response to Now (Osho Insights for a New Way of Living), by Osho

In Intelligence, Osho challenges the common conception that the best way to promote intelligence is to train the intellect. Intellect is logical, he says; intelligence is paradoxical. Intellect takes things apart to see how they work; intelligence puts things together to see the functioning of the whole. Osho posits that when our education systems put too much emphasis on developing intellect, an imbalance is created and both the individual and the society suffer. It is only through intelligence that we can respond creatively to the challenges of a changing world.

The Insights for a New Way of Living series aims to shine light on beliefs and attitudes that prevent individuals from being their true selves. The text is an artful mix of compassion and humor, and readers are encouraged to confront what they would most like to avoid, which in turn provides the key to true insight and power.

By exploring the distinction between intellect and intelligence, Intelligence encourages readers to be more aware of how they approach problems---logical, emotional, and practical---and how they solve them.

Intelligence by Osho
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca
The author deals with a complicated subject very simply. He gives
great credit to animals for the intuitive reasoning that they
possess in the conduct of daily life. According to Osho, intelligence is not per se subject to precise measurement.
In addition, there are conditions which impede intellectual
rationalizations and applications. For instance, great stress
can inhibit our ability to function meaningfully on the creative or intuitive level. The author gives credence to the notion that relaxation methodologies; such as, formal meditation
provide the requisite environment for the creative side of our
intelligence to flourish and grow. The book provides a fresh
perspective on what constitutes intelligence and creativity.
It would be appealing to a wide constituency of readers in
business, academe and the general readership.
It is a good value for the price charged.

Quite amazing ...
By Sharad Yadav
It is very difficult to see good books on topics such as "Intelligence" and "Intuition". I have read many (well written & researched) books that talk about workbook techniques to increase one's intelligence. But, their syllabus like content makes them rather uninteresting to read and I have never been able to sustain my interest in them beyond a couple of days.

This book will not tell you about techniques to build intelligence because intelligence is innate. It'll help you rediscover it, understand it and ultimately use it. Intelligence is very liberating, it helps removes all dependencies and quell agonies from the past and worries of the future. The book will also define and describe the real meaning (and manifestation) of ubiquitous terms like simple, simplicity and personality. The book is like a narration and there is some repetition, but even the repetition makes compulsive reading.

I won't say that this is the best book that I've ever read, but it is certainly the most enlightening and eye-opening.

Intelligence
By Ron Rasmussen
Difficult at best to put down once you begin - the words maybe from Osho but the meaning comes from beyond them - each page spoke to my soul - his humor mixed with his message is so easy to grasp.
