Really is the best

Gardner Dozois routinely edits the best collection of the years short SF. If that's what you want then his is the one you buy first, all others second.

Good and Bad

A hard edition to rate. There's an awful lot of gloom and doom, but the atmosphere and characters are generally vivid and plots tight with unambiguous endings.

"Inappropriate Behavior" by Pat Murphy. Spot the looney! A mental patient must overcome her sane doctor to save a shipwrecked anthropologist. B

"Start the Clock" by Benjamin Rosenbaum. In a future USA where reality, time and the Internet freely mingle, some kids never grow up-literally. C

"The Third Party" by David Moles. Planet resembling early 20th century Earth beset by space faring capitalists and socialist missionaries, with the hero getting caught in the crossfire big time. Stunning characters and atmosphere. A

"The Voluntary State" by Christopher Rowe. Life on this chaotic alternate Earth is only slightly less perplexing to the characters than to me. D

"Shiva in Shadow" by Nancy Kress. The shadowy nether regions of their own minds prove more baffling and dangerous than even the anomalous black hole being explored by two space scientists and a ship captain. Brilliant juxtaposition of infinite space and interior man. A+

"The People of Sand and Slag" by Paolo Bacigalupi. Bioengineered super humans render the animal kingdom obsolete, but a surprising visitor disturbs their illusions of grandeur. Poignantly asks, will science make us more than men, or less? A

"The Clapping Hands of God" by Michael F. Flynn. Scientists travel through wormhole to secretly observe a planet inhabited by gentle humanoids, yet danger fills the air. The artfully drawn aliens are fascinating. A

"Tourism" by M. John Harrison. Gritty lowlifes hang out in a seamy otherworld bar with nothing much to do but generate more atmosphere. C

"Scout's Honor" by Terry Bisson. Elegantly plotted time travel story in which a scientist becomes best buds with a Neanderthal. A

"Men Are Trouble" by James Patrick Kelly. Earth is dominated by avian aliens who have plucked away all the men. Hard-boiled detective story just can't get off the ground. C

"Mother Aegypt" by Kage Baker. Characters leap off the page in this medieval spellbinder about black magic true and false. A

"Synthetic Serendipity" by Vernor Vinge. Baby boomers flounder in the new Net society. This one rings uncomfortably true. B

"Skin Deep" by Mary Rosenblum. Tender interplay between a horribly disfigured boy and a surgeon with new techniques and mysterious motives. B

"Delhi" by Vandana Singh. The author captures the mood of Delhi as dwellers past and future come alive for a current day resident who can't quite understand what he sees. C

"The Tribes of Bela" by Albert E. Cowdrey. The natives are restless, to say the least, on a distant planet being mined by a company from Earth. And some natives they are! Superb space adventure with lots of action and a great ending. A

"Sitka" by William Sanders. The call of the wily. Grim and fatalistic alternate history with Lenin and Jack London up to no good in Sitka. B

"Leviathan Wept" by Daniel Abraham. Dismal picture of life in our near future, when terrorism rules as if by design. Chilling, real, almost unbearable to read. A

"The Defenders" by Colin P. Davies. Old man teaches his granddaughter a bitter life lesson in this complex and mystical vignette. A

"Mayflower II" by Stephen Baxter. The entire religious and political evolution and devolution of Western culture play out in microcosm aboard a starship where generations of humans are escaping to a new home twenty thousand years away-all related, alas, with the rationalistic and cynical vigor so typical in this edition. Still, mesmerizing and elegantly crafted in all respects, so reluctantly, A+

"Riding the White Bull" by Caitlin R. Kiernan. A profanity-laced narrative seriously detracts from this already marginal story, a tangled nightmare of social collapse and personal despair in the face of a gruesome alien attack. D

"Falling Star" by Brendan Dubois. Technology collapses and society reverts to the "Old Ways", which Mr. Dozois describes as "bigotry, intolerance, and fear." Apparently this is the totality of his conception of faith, yet he serves up story after story dramatizing the futility of science--a rather hopeless vision. C

"The Dragons of Summer Gulch" by Robert Reed. A fantasy world resembling the Old West has all sorts of characters scrambling for control of some relics--for all sorts of reasons. B

"The Oceans of the Blind" by James L. Cambias. This first contact story has three wonderful elements: snappy shifts in point of view between the aliens and humans, a perfect balance of humor and horror, and fascinating alien adaptation at the bottom of a deep, dark and dangerous ocean. A+

"The Garden: A Hwarhath Science Fictional Romance" by Eleanor Arnason. Feminist editorial masquerades as fiction. D

"Footvote" by Peter F. Hamilton. Angry leftist editorial with barely the pretense of masquerade. D

"Sisyphus and the stranger" by Paul Di Fillipo. Albert Camus plies his existential trade in an alternate world where the French Empire rules all. B

"Ten Sigmas" by Paul Melko. Slice(s) of life for a "massively parallel human" is somewhat over my head, but intriguing nonetheless. B

"Investments" by Walter Jon Williams. Political intrigue and a desperate fight against cosmic forces in a far-flung pan-galactic empire. C

It's the best SF of the year again

Another year, and another set of "Year's Best" anthologies. While I've always enjoyed David Hartwell's anthologies, last year was the first time that I read the more venerable one edited by Gardner Dozois. However, I enjoyed last year's so much that I just had to check out this year's, the 22nd annual edition. As was last year's, it is an imposing book, with twenty-nine stories in it, all from acclaimed science fiction authors. Unfortunately, I find this year's edition not quite as good as last year's. There were a few stories in it that just didn't do anything for me. On the other hand, there were definitely some stand-outs.

In a rarity for me, some of my favourite stories in the book were more on the hard science side than is usual for my taste. There is Stephen Baxter's excellent "Mayflower II," which deals with a generation ship on a trip to the far reaches of the galaxy and beyond, and what happens in the meantime. On the very edge of the solar system, there is a colony that has hidden itself away the alien Qax who had conquered the Earth. Now, the Coalition of Interim Governance has freed Earth, and is on its way to the colony. Five generation ships are dispatched to save as many of the colony's citizens as possible. On Rusel's ship, the "Pharaoh" of the ship has decided that they are going to journey all the way across the galaxy, a trip that will take many thousands of years. The story is Rusel's, and how he becomes virtually immortal, and how the citizens of the ship begin to devolve as time goes on. It's a truly horrifying story in a way, demonstrating what isolated societies can become over time. For a while, I was beginning to get bored with the story, as it's not really my favourite type of story and it was quite long. However, I soon got wrapped up in this society, and Rusel's severance from his own humanity. It's a slow story in some ways, but the ideas behind it just grab you and don't let you go. It's probably the best story in the book.

Another great story is "The Clapping Hands of God" by Michael F. Flynn. In this one, a gate has opened to another world. Teams of scientists go through these gates to explore the worlds, but this one just happens to be inhabited by an intelligent species. Hassan Maklouf is the leader of this particular expedition, and he is in charge of making sure they are not seen by the inhabitants, as well as making all the decisions. The studies are going well, with some progress being made on studying their language as well as their culture. Theories are presented for why they act in certain ways, especially when an apparently martial rally is seen. This is followed by what appears to be a couple spending their last night together. Then things really start to go wrong, as Hassan discovers that they aren't the only invaders here. There are two main characters in this story, Hassan and a female anthropologist, Iman. There are some romantic sparks between them, even as they both try to act like proper Moslems. However, the broader story is their conflict once things start to go wrong, as Iman is the humanitarian scientist and Hassan is the practical one. The ending is tragic, all the more so because of the hints of their relationship earlier in the story. It was very nice to see a story where the characters' religions were just part of their character, rather than a main part of the story. While these two are the main characters, all of the other scientists are also well done, giving the story a broad tapestry on which to weave its magic.

While those two stories were the best of the lot in my opinion, other strong stories included "The Tribes of Bela" by Albert Cowdrey (a series of grisly murders on a remote mining colony are symptoms of a planet that's trying to reclaim itself and expel the invaders), "Leviathan Wept," by Daniel Abraham (a member of a futuristic anti-terrorism squad discovers that fanaticism comes in all shapes and sizes, including possibly his own), and "Investments," by Walter Jon Williams (a space opera that gives us illegal business dealings as well as a star cluster shooting out x-rays that could destroy the planet, making the investigation of the business dealings kind of moot). Most of the other stories in this volume were also quite good, or at least readable.

Some choices I did disagree with, however. As I said above, "Mother Aegypt" isn't one of Baker's best stories. It has a strong first three-quarters, but then fell apart for me at the end. "Start the Clock," by Benjamin Rosenbaum, was a nice little story but I didn't find the world that believable and thus I wouldn't include it among the best of the year. Finally, I didn't really care for "The Defenders," by Colin P. Davies, when I first read it in Asimov's. It didn't improve when I read it again here. It was decent, but again not one of the best.

One thing I do have to say about the quality of this anthology, however, is that the copy editing was horrendous. Typos were all over the place, a few words were wrong here and there. I usually don't notice these things, as I'm sure they exist in almost every book that's out there. When I do notice them, however, it must really be bad. That being said, I really did enjoy this anthology, and while it's not as good as the 21st edition, it is definitely worth picking up if you like science fiction. Dozois is one of the best editors out there, and it shows once again.

Practical Advice for the REAL WORLD

I usually find these types of books to be celebrations of the obvious, written by people who want to sell books. But this one is really different. Cindy really "gets it" and her expertise and experience in working with real people in the real world is obvious.

Instead of addressing the issue of disorganization and clutter by outlining 17 new, onerous systems to organize your life like some authors do (which everyone, including those authors, knows full well no one will ever follow), she gives a series of simple, practical tips that can actually be implemented - even in the lives of the busiest people.

The other thing she does that makes this book unique is that she offers brief, but insightful psychological observations for why we might save useless things, or why we don't clean up regularly, or why we get disorganized all over again right after we've just re-organized our lives.

Last, this is an easy read. She says what she has to say briefly, succinctly - and then moves on. No droning on and on for 27 pages about something that could be addressed in 5 paragraphs. A very easy read, but a wealth of great practical insights. Don't think about it - just buy this book. It's a gem.

This is just an "ok" book. It is a boook of lists although it is better than your typical list book. Many books will give a list of 100 things you can do but they list so many it becomes overwhelming. The positive aspect of this book is that it is not a huge list. It focuses on one idea and tells a little bit about it and how it might help you. If you are someone who has a serious clutter problem then you really need "Sink Reflections" by Marla Cilley aka Flylady. There really isn't going to be anything better than her book if you are suffering from a severe clutter problem. If, however, you are someone who wants some new ideas on decluttering this is a good way to go. I noticed the best ideas she had were already in Flylady's book.

All of the ideas you can find listed on websites. If anything I would check the book out from the library.

This is a nice book. She does have some helpful suggestions. One of my favorites is....let the phone ring....the idea that you don't have to be a slave to the phone. That way of living is a lot less stressful! I do like the way the book is set up. You can pick and choose where you want to read.....you can jump around in the book...I like doing that if I can. You aren't required to read it from cover to cover to get something out of it.

The shy, dowdy stay-at-home mom is still traumatized by the memory of seeing her father gunned down by Salvadoran soldiers. Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez cornered the Latina chick-lit market with her debut, "The Dirty Girls Social Club." But she hits the sophomore slump in "Playing With Boys," an overstretched story about defying the cliches that dog Hispanic women. It's a good idea, just not executed well.

Alexis Lopez is a slightly overweight talent agent, with a nasty "gangsta" boyfriend and a longing to break Meximericans into the spotlight. She finds her possible breakout star in Marcella Gauthier Bosch, a stunning rich wild child who wants to be a serious actress, but keeps getting offered roles as "maids" and "crack whores."

As Alexis struggles to find Marcella an outstanding role with no jiggle, she encounters Olivia. Olivia is a dowdy, traumatized young mom, with a crumbling marriage. But she's also written the brilliant "Soledad," a screenplay that chronicles her mother's life -- the perfect vehicle for Marcella. All three women struggle to bring "Soledad" to the screen, and struggle just as hard to deal with their delicate relationships with men...

At first glance, this sounds like a feisty romp, with three very different Latinas plotting to challenge the behemoth that is Hollywood. It's a cool idea, and one ripe to be explored. Unfortunately, Valdes-Rodriguez doesn't give it everything it needs to really bloom. There's too much book here for too little plot -- it putters out about halfway through the book, and just sort of limps to a finale.

This is probably the only book I've ever read where the women think about sex about fifty times more often than the men. In fact, at times it seems to be all the women think about -- even the joyless Olivia checks out porn. If Valdes-Rodriguez wants to portray Hispanic women in a uncliched light, she might want to avoid that. Her writing is solid enough, with looks at the different lifestyles and social positions of L.A., with a look at how hard it is to get a stereotype-free role in Hollywood if you aren't a blonde Caucasian.

While Valdes-Rodriguez succeeds in making three radically different women, only one of them is really likable. Olivia is as faded as her sneakers -- she doesn't register a single emotion you can identify with. Marcella is a little too insistently wild and decadent, not to mention bitter. The ultra-nice Alexis is much more likable, with her seemingly hopeless love for a sexy Cuban rapper and body image problems.

Valdes-Rodriguez had a good idea, just not the characters and plot to flesh it out. "Playing with Boys" is a dullish, overstretched slice of chick-lit, without much to make it come to life.

A novel with serious themes underneath a light and fun tone

Alexis Lopez is a transplanted Texas conservative living among the liberal left in PLAYING WITH BOYS, the latest novel by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, whose first was the bestselling THE DIRTY GIRLS SOCIAL CLUB. Alexis manages Latino musicians and her most famous band is the Los Chimpances del Norte, a Norteno band that is world famous among those of Hispanic persuasion.

The opening chapter has poor Alexis worrying over the band, all of whom are misbehaving badly at an exclusive party honoring the band members who had just donated $5,000,000 to UCLA's Center for Chicano Studies. The band, dressed in brightly colored outfits with huge belt buckles, is embarrassing Alexis, who believes in dressing conservatively in public, especially at these high-society functions. She also believes that those with money would know how to behave appropriately, but this rule does not seem to apply to "The Chimps." These men are millionaires, yet here they are at this fancy party groping the female guests.

One of the women who the bandleader, Filoberto, decides to grope is a famous Latina actress, Marcella Gauthier Bosch, known for those popular Mexican telenovelas. Alexis doesn't recognize the actress at first, because Marcella is working as a server at the party. When she explains to Alexis who she really is, Alexis is star-struck. At the same time, Alexis does not understand why this wonderful actress is working at a party when she should be the star of the party.

After Alexis saves Marcella from the hands of Filoberto, she bumps into Samuel, who had helped her set up the party and the donation to UCLA. Standing next to him is a very petite woman who turns out to be his wife. She's very quiet, shy and insecure, but once they get to talking, Alexis finds out that Olivia has written the script for an intriguing movie.

The three women's lives become entwined, as Alexis decides to buy Olivia's script and make it into a movie starring Marcella as the woman who portrays Olivia's mother, Soledad. Soledad and Olivia had witnessed the murder of Olivia's father in San Salvador many years ago, and this movie is the story of Soledad's life. As the deal is inked in pen, the three women bond and become unlikely friends.

In the meantime, Alexis is having boyfriend problems, and Daniel, a Pulitzer Prize-winning news reporter, becomes rather psychotic after she decides to break up with him. Soon after the breakup, she meets (by accident, literally) a handsome Cuban named Vladimir (Goyo), who takes the reader to Cuba and the story of his girlfriend, who is still trapped there, living in an oppressed country without any freedoms. Alexis feels an immediate attraction to this man and has no idea that their lives will soon intersect in more ways than one.

PLAYING WITH BOYS takes on a light tone throughout, but underneath the comedy lies a more serious theme. While Alexis's Hispanic friends are living a life taken for granted in the heart of Los Angeles, the stories of Soledad and Goyo remind them of what it was like for their friends and families before they came to the United States. Olivia suffers through reoccurring nightmares of what she experienced as a child in her homeland of El Salvador, while Goyo dreams of his lost love trapped in Cuba. And through it all, Alexis, Olivia and Marcella become friends despite their differences. What they share are universal feelings about men, relationships and what it is like to be a Hispanic American living in California.

It may take a while for the reader to get into the novel, as it takes some time to set up the characters and the plot. But once the reader gets past this, PLAYING WITH BOYS will keep one absorbed until the very end. The author does a good job describing Southern California, from the Valley to East Los Angeles and in between. The many different characters, both major and minor, are fun, fully developed and real. The story itself is original, with flashbacks to Goyo's and Olivia's childhoods, although the ending may be obvious to most readers. This reviewer gives PLAYING WITH BOYS four stars out of five and will definitely get a copy of THE DIRTY GIRLS SOCIAL CLUB.

Good & even inspiring read, but I could do without the politics and Jemima J references

I find it strange that I am the first to review this item, but not strange that it is now priced as a bargain book.

I decided to read this because I enjoyed this author's last work, The Dirty Girls Social Club. This was another good read, but there were entirely too many political references for me such as (ugh, she is a Republican or ugh, she is a Democrat). References I found out of place in a chick novel like this.

I also tired of Alexis' fat girl complaints, such as "nobody will like me", etc. etc. Also out of place in a chick novel ... we need more inspiring women!

But ... overall the book does not disappoint and there is quite a bit of inspiration in the story of these three women.

So enjoy the book but be wary of the political and "Jemima J" references. Chick lit readers will know what I am talking about!

A wonderful continuation of the series

Donna VonLiere delights us all again with the third book in her "Christmas" series. Just as poignent as the previous two books; it is a book to be kept and read year after year. This is the stuff that family traditions are made of, so gather the kids, mom and dad, the grandfolks, and the cats and dogs and sit down by a warm fire and read aloud. It won't disappoint you.

Short on wonder and adventure.

A superior collection of thought provoking fiction.

Gardner Dozois has once again put together a collection of short speculative fiction that every reader of science fiction should have on their shelf. It is filled with a twenty year progression of stories that both reflect the times they were written, and their relevance today as well.

Dozois did a very wise thing while putting together this anthology by choosing stories that made the most significant impact on him as a reader, rather than picking award winners or short stories that have been widely reprinted. Therefore you get Nancy Kress's "Trinity" rather than her much published "Beggars in Spain," and James Patrick Kelly's "10(16) to 1" instead of his "Think Like A Dinosaur."

Some of my favorites I was happy to find enclosed as well by Pat Cadigan, Joe Haldeman, Ursula K. Le Guin and Eileen Gunn. A stellar group of stories that comes Highly Recommended.

frustrating selection and dreadful production

I am a reasonable fan of Gardner Dozois' "Year's Best" anthologies, having devoured three of them (I think). There were some stories I considered clinkers, sure, but I always ascribed this to differences in taste, and reading others' reviews of the contents of those volumes confirmed this.

So I excitedly purchased _The Best of the Best_ -- at an airport, if I recall correctly -- and anticipated the direct hits would asymptotically approach a heady, dizzying 100%. To my surprise, the Insanely Great Quotient went in the opposite direction! While I wouldn't say any of Dozois' selections here are "bad" stories, there are far too many that simply feel like trifles: pleasant throwaways, good for a single read, but hardly deserving of inclusion in an anthology that purports to be as exclusive or definitive as this one does. In this "forgettable" category I would even include the offering by Gene Wolfe, a writer I consider to at least approach the "great" category in many ways.

Furthermore, the physical book displays haste and a lack of care that I find shocking. The paper quality is poor -- that is, poorer than what I am used to from the individual "Year's Best" collections. It is almost like newspaper, and the book's pages have already yellowed visibly. Finally ... for gosh sake, who proofread this thing? There are gaffes that ruin moments of delicacy and power in stories like Tony Daniels' "A Dry, Quiet War" and Ted Chiang's "Story of Your Life" (where -- help us all -- "deaf" parents becomes "dead" parents). Both of these stories, in my opinion, are spot-on choices ... and they certainly deserve better treatment than that.

I will return to more of the "Year's Best" collections with pleasure and profit, since they include Dozois' estimable "Summations" of the year in science fiction, but I am going to finish _The Best of the Best_ and ... well, just scratch my head and wonder what happened.

About the Author

William Cane is the pen name of Michael Christian. The author of The Book of Kisses, The Art of Hugging and The Art of Kissing Book of Questions and Answers, he is a frequent lecturer at colleges and universities across the country. He lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.

K.I.S.S. principle applied to the buss

This book provides short, almost vignette based, chapters on various kissing techniques, from the dry buss to the full up "soul-kiss" (French), including several that the author believes are unique to him or his sources. The target audience would appear to be late teen, but not overly so - it certainly does not talk down to a more mature audience

Fair but not exciting

Many of the kisses described in this book you learned when you were less than 17. There are a few that spark the imagination but not that many. Since it did not cost much you really cant go that wrong because even if you learn only one new kiss or become better at a few then is will be worth the price you pay.

Just wait until you read about the Trobriand Islands kiss!

How do you turn a complete amateur into a confident kisser? Read this book, that's how. I got it the summer before I started college. I never dreamed I'd have the confidence that a lot of my roommates seemed to have, but after reading this wonderful book I was a different person. I wasn't dreading kissing, I was actually looking forward to it. You learn not only all the different kisses - there are about 35 - but you also learn what the opposite sex likes and dislikes about each one. I'm now happily in a relationship, and my boyfriend tells me I'm the best kisser ever. (I taught him the Trobriand Islands kiss!) My sorority sisters are always borrowing my copy of this book, they get such a kick out of it.
