Consigned to Death (Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries), by Jane K. Cleland

Josie Prescott's friends thought she was nuts when she left her high-paying New York auction house job and her boyfriend to live on the rugged and beautiful New Hampshire coast. Truth is, Josie wondered a little herself--never mind that her peripheral involvement in a well-publicized price-fixing scandal made the possibility of a new start incredibly enticing.

Things are looking better, though, now that she's got her own auction business up and running and has made something of a success of her new life. That is, until she gets mixed up in murder, and the supremely eligible but emotionally distant local police chief seems to think she's the prime suspect.

Josie has suddenly got a lot to lose and no desire to leave her new life--or the possibility of a little romance--behind. So she sets her mind on identifying the killer and making the best out of her unfortunate circumstances. After all, Josie is grateful for her second chance in life and knows a third is just too much to ask…especially with a vicious killer on the loose.

From Publishers Weekly
In Cleland's satisfying cozy debut, a New Hampshire antiques dealer, Josie Prescott, formerly employed by a big New York auction house, turns sleuth after a potential client, wealthy recluse Nathaniel Grant, is found stabbed to death in his mansion in Rocky Point, N.H. Cleland, who herself was once an antiques dealer in the Granite State, puts her insider knowledge to admirable use in depicting what is often a cutthroat business, from price setting and haggling to handling difficult clients and competitors. She also proves adept at shifting suspicion from one character to another, including a well-established professional rival of Josie's, his harpy of a wife and the slain man's greedy granddaughter. A few valuable paintings of uncertain provenance that have gone missing and a soupçon of romance for the wary Josie help raise the excitement level. Readers will want to see more of her. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Josie Prescott left a good job at a New York auction house after blowing the whistle on her former employer in a price-fixing scandal. Her new business in a small New Hampshire coastal town is doing well. She is busy setting up an auction when the chief of police shows up to ask questions about a murder. A potential client is dead, and Josie has become a murder suspect. With a great deal to lose and no desire to leave her new life, she must clear her name. Using her knowledge of the art and antique trade, she starts searching for the killer with a bit of help from her lawyer and an enterprising young reporter. The fact that the chief of police is quite attractive--and Josie could use some romance--provides a bit of extra motivation. Josie is a nice addition to the ranks of female sleuths, and the antique-auction milieu provides an interesting background. Barbara Bibel

Antiques to Die For
By Nash Black
Jane K. Celand's CONSIGNED TO DEATH has flaws, but the introduction to Josie Prescott keeps you turning pages. Any reviewer likes to see a mystery series devoted to their profession and here is where I found the flaws.
Josie's very high end merchandise is way out of our price range, but her constant use of the word, "yeah" for "yes" is irritating. We have been in the business for over thirty years and we've never heard a dealer use that when answering someone. We're reading the series out of order and didn't notice this in KILLER KEEPSAKES. Others have mentioned the constant waterworks, etc.
Still, this is a fun read, either for the mystery/suspense or the antiques.

Tiresome Heroine
By Hovercraft
Loved all the insider information about the antiquities market and estate resolutions. Loved the plot. I couldn't stand the heroine who cried every three pages and quoted her dead father every other one. I am going to try one more in the series but if the main character does not stop whining and sniveling and telling us what "her Father would have said," that will be it for me.

From Publishers Weekly
In this witty, absorbing memoir, Chester muses about his unlikely trajectory from growing up around trailer parks and born-again Christians to working as an openly gay actor who’s appeared in several indie films, including Swoon, for which he earned a Spirit Award nomination. An engaging storyteller, Chester indiscriminately pokes fun at himself and others and is almost always upbeat (save for nicknaming his hellish summer camp "Kidshwitz"). It’s not all light, though. Chester tackles serious issues and candidly reveals his own struggles with his career, relationships, substance abuse and a disfiguring jaw malady (hence the title: "By fourteen," he writes, "I looked like a Picasso sock puppet with pimples") that required extensive, painful surgeries. Although readers may wonder how real some of Chester’s fiction-worthy characters are, they’ll nonetheless be entertained. Chester has a fresh voice—though occasionally he tries too hard to be funny—and when he opines that "the most counterproductive barriers to true genius are a healthy childhood, healthy relationships, and healthy surroundings," readers will be grateful he suffered no such encumbrances.

Advance praise for Why the Long Face?

“In this book Craig Chester writes, without malice, of how, at a Fire Island disco, he once vomited on me. I was honored. He’s a terrific actor, and a hilarious writer, and he’s way too much fun to be anyone’s role model.”—Paul Rudnick, author of In & Out

“Craig Chester’s been through long-face syndrome, AIDS: The Musical!, a Diana Ross TV movie about schizophrenia, and a lover who dumped him on 9/11, and he’s emerged wise, funny, and self-aware, with astounding revelations about the joys and pains of being an out actor and the redeeming nature of art and integrity. His page-turner of a memoir is a Sundance audience favorite waiting to happen, and no matter what the agents say, he should play himself!”—Michael Musto, The Village Voice

A Truly Inventive Writer
By J. Michael Click
This wry, witty, entertaining, and eminently readable tome is about as different from your typical paint-by-numbers, self-serving, egocentric showbiz autobiography as any I've ever read. Rather than blandly follow the timeline of his life and career, actor Craig Chester - an "openly gay" performer who never came out of the closet because he was never in it! - introduces himself to his readers through a series of clever and thought-provoking essays in which he uses his past as a launching pad to discuss general topics on which he wishes to comment. This fresh and unusual approach allows the reader both to pick up on the threads of Chester's life story and to get a handle on his personality, as well as his views on the worlds of filmmaking, gay politics, relationships, and many other subjects. Chester's writing proves that should he ever decide to abandon acting, he has another equally vital career awaiting him as a writer. "Why the Long Face?" is one of those books you have trouble putting down, and wish would never end. Very highly recommended!

The CIA at War: Inside the Secret Campaign Against Terror, by Ronald Kessler

With the CIA at the core of the war on terror, no agency is as important to preserving America's freedom. Yet the CIA is a closed and secretive world-impenetrable to generations of journalists-and few Americans know what really goes on among the spy masters who plot America's worldwide campaign against terrorists.

Only Ronald Kessler, an award-winning former Washington Post and Wall Street Journal investigative reporter, could have gained the unprecedented access to tell the story. Kessler interviewed fifty current CIA officers, including all the agency's top officials, and toured areas of the CIA the media has never seen. The agency actively encouraged retired CIA officers and officials to talk with him as well. In six years as director, George J. Tenet has never appeared on TV shows and has given only a handful of print interviews, all before 9/11, but Tenet agreed to be interviewed by Kessler for this book. He spoke candidly and passionately about the events of 9/11, the war on terror, the agency's intelligence on Iraq, and the controversies surrounding the agency.

The CIA at War tells the inside story of how Tenet, a son of Greek immigrants, turned around the CIA from a pathetic, risk averse outfit to one that has rolled up 3,000 terrorists since 9/11, was critically important to winning in Afghanistan and Iraq, and now kills terrorists with its Predator drone aircraft.

The book portrays Tenet as a true American hero, one who overcame every kind of Washington obstacle and the destructive actions of previous director John Deutch to make the agency a success. As Tenet said in a recent speech, "Nowhere in the world could the son of an immigrant stand before you as the director of Central Intelligence. This is simply the greatest country on the face of the earth."

The CIA at War discloses highly sensitive information about the CIA's unorthodox methods and its stunning successes and shocking failures. The book explores whether the CIA can be trusted, whether its intelligence is politicized, and whether it is capable of winning the war on terror. In doing so, the book weaves in the history of the CIA and how it really works. It is the definitive account of the agency.

From the CIA's intelligence failure of 9/11 to its critical role in preventing further attacks, The CIA at War tells a riveting, unique story about a secretive, powerful agency and its confrontation with global terrorism.

From Publishers Weekly
The war on terror is a sideshow to the larger struggle for the CIA's soul in this illuminating but partisan book. Investigative journalist Kessler gives a warts-and-all account of the CIA's checkered past up to the despondent 1990s, when the demise of Communism, official disparagement of human intelligence-gathering in favor of high-tech spying, and humiliations like the Aldrich Ames spy case, left the agency rudderless and demoralized. Kessler ties these lapses to a dysfunctional institutional culture that oscillated, he says, between paranoia and slackness, bureaucratic sclerosis and "cowboy" adventurism, and arrogant unaccountability and prissy human rights regulations. Kessler gives an absorbing and critical, if somewhat rambling, history of the agency and its problems, based on extensive interviews with past and present CIA officials and leavened with intriguing secret-agent lore. But when current CIA director George Tenet-a "gracious" and "politically savvy" leader whose "integrity and outspokenness" started a "healing process" that made the agency "focused, aggressive and effective"-arrives on the scene, Kessler's objectivity departs. He dismisses criticisms of the CIA's pre-Sept. 11 performance and the controversy over intelligence claims about Iraq (Tenet, he huffs, "would never tolerate any attempts to influence the CIA's conclusions"). Instead, Kessler extols the agency's successes in "rolling up" terrorists and laying the clandestine groundwork for the invasion of Iraq, while downplaying awkward loose threads like the failure to find the weapons of mass destruction the CIA insisted were in Iraq. Kessler's uncritical endorsement of Tenet-and of President Bush, another "focused" leader who "gets" intelligence, unlike the inattentive Clinton-lacks the insight displayed in the rest of the book. From Booklist
Kessler takes us from the formation of the CIA as an outgrowth of World War II OSS intelligence activities, when most agents were East Coast Ivy League elites focused on cold war scrimmages, through the current war on terror, where the enemy is often unknown and the agency elite are somewhat more diverse. Through numerous interviews with both agents and operatives, Kessler brings to life a world generally described only in fiction. While providing special insight into CIA successes associated with the post-9/11 war on terror, Kessler also portrays a demoralized agency that lost popular and political support because of its inability to detect traitors within its own ranks. This historically secretive and powerful agency has adjusted to modern warfare by integrating intelligence gathering with field operations. Kessler had unprecedented access to the agency, which is reflected in his up-to-date commentary on the war and administration policy. Vernon Ford

Review

“Colorful and fascinating . . . Kessler's sobering report . . . will come as a surprise to most readers--and possibly even Washington insiders . . . Chilling.” ―The Washington Post Book World

“A compelling and timely exposition of the real FBI. Kessler's fresh information and command of the facts . . . rings with authority.” ―The Los Angeles Times Book Review

“An assiduous journalist, Kessler has written numerous books about behind-the-scenes stories at the national security agencies. His reportage on the abuse of office perks by ex-FBI director William Sessions, for example, precipitated Sessions' exit in 1993. His latest book is a history of the FBI since its origin in 1908 and is structured around directors' tenures . . . Kessler's access to reliable sources results in a richly detailed overview.” ―Gilbert Taylor, Booklist

A Major Disappointment
By A Customer
This book is amazingly shallow, even among its genre of 'instant histories' focusing on the newly energized interest in the CIA post 11 September. More a hagiography of George Tenet than a serious analysis, the author seems to take virtually everything he is told by Tenet and his supporters at face value. What might be worse is that the bulk of the book is filled with a pastiche of rather pointless -- and poorly organized -- historical anecdotes that have nothing to do with the book's purported theme. Readers with an interest in how the CIA actually works and its history should go somewhere else than this book. Even material on the CIA's website itself typically is more nuanced than the treatment here.

CIA at War reviewed
By Gordon W. Sheill
The book was recommended by a high school colleague who worked for the CIA. He said "I don't know his sources but it is the most accurate portrayal of the agency that I have read". I wasn't disappointed. The book came in excellent condition.

You can't afford NOT to read this book
By A Customer
Anyone interested in learning how the CIA operates (and for Americans that should be all of us) will find this book fascinating. Choc-a-bloc with anecdotes and infomation that is both scary and amusing, it's hard to put down. Did you know that former CIA director John Deutch place l7,00, that's right, THOUSAND, CIA files, some of which were classified as top secret on his unclassified home computer? Did you know that since 9/11 certain Arab countries such as Yemen have actively cooperated with the CIA in its' war against al Qaeda? Do you want to know what the CIA is doing to try to insure there is never another 9/11? Do you (as I do) question whether we should have invaded Iraq? Read Kessler's analysis of the information amassed by the CIA demonstrating that Sadam Hussein was concealing a program dedicated to developing weapons of mass destruction and then decide what you think about the decision. Clearly a fan of George Tenet, whose achievements are impressive by any standard, Kessler is nonetheless critical of the CIA in many respects, as well he should be. Don't criticize the CIA without understanding something about it. This book will help you do just that.

From Publishers Weekly
The joys of being 16 are amply explored in this back-to-the-present comedy of second chances. At the start of Colgan's funny, fast-moving fifth novel, 32-year-old London accountant Flora Scurrison realizes that she can't bear the monotony of her job and her dependable boyfriend, Oliver. So when she sees her high school love, Clelland, for the first time in 16 years at her best friend Tashy's wedding, she can't help wondering what her life would be like with this globe-trotting hunk rather than with steady, unexciting Oliver. As Tashy cuts the wedding cake, Flora wishes herself 16 again and gets a chance to make new choices about love, career and risk. She can keep her father from cheating on her mother and be the coolest kid in high school—not to mention ogle her svelte self in the mirrors at Top Shop. Strangely enough, though Flora is 16 again, only her parents have been transformed with her, and it's still the year 2003. Flora's interactions with a new Britney Spears generation of teenagers as well as with the grown-up friends who recognize her in her adolescent incarnation give the familiar plot a fresh twist. Cleverly constructed and often hilarious, this is an enjoyable addition to the annals of body-switching.

From Booklist
Thirty-two-year-old Flora Scurrison has a good job and a boyfriend, but somehow her life feels off track. As she attends the wedding of her best friend, Tashy, Flora realizes that she hates her job as an accountant and that this--the white dress, the vows, the cake--are not what she wants with her boyfriend, Olly. As Tashy and her new husband cut into the wedding cake, Flora thinks back to the dreams they had as teenagers and wishes she could do it all over again. The next morning, Flora wakes up with a literal second chance: she is 16 again, and it is one month before Tashy's wedding. Flora has one month to decide if she should remain a teenager or go back to her old life. The time-travel plot seems gimmicky at first--and a bit stale, given the latest remake of Freaky Friday--but Colgan rises to the challenge, emphasizing the choice rather than the switch itself. The result is a tender and affecting story about growing up, love, disappointment, and regret. Beth Leistensnider

“The Boy I Loved Before is a triumph. It's witty and hilarious and so clever, with a compulsive story that kept me flicking the pages over madly, right to the end. I loved it.” ―Sophie Kinsella, author of Can You Keep a Secret and Confessions of a Shopaholic

Real Twist
By Jedidiah Carosaari
This was exquisite writing. It's one of those books you start reading in the bookstore, and then suddenly realize if you're taking this long to pour through a book it's really more fair to buy it, and then you can't stop reading it until 3 in the morning when you're eyes finally droop and fall apart.

A woman is uncomfortable with the direction of her life, twice. She makes a wish and is transported into the past- with a twist. She's 16, but in the present, the early 21st century. That's a new one. And she has to decide if she can, does she want to go back? How it happened is a bit of a deux es machina, never explained. But in this book, that's unimportant. I enjoyed the author's playing both with alternate reality and with real moral issues. Can we change our lives? Should we? What does it mean to be satisfied with life and not bitter, yet still striving to change? I was challenged in reading this work to contemplate my past and accept the good in my present.

Colgan writes real. I have no inkling into the past of this author, but the book feels so true one would think it had to be autobiographical. What amazes me is that the author remembers youth so well. I certainly have forgotten most of the details she seems to have recalled. As I read it, I was transported into my own past life as a teenager, and simultaneously as an adult of about the age of the protagonist. Having been a student, and now a teacher, I could see life as a student and a teacher at the same time. Some authors vividly portray different characters. It takes real skill to portray two different aspects of the same character at the same time.

And lest one think this is only for women, as a guy, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I hesitate to say I have any knowledge of what women feel and how they respond, these characters feel like real girls, and real women.

4 Stars, because the end is wrapped up a bit too quickly and too neatly. Also, Colgan seems to take the easy way out in reference to sex, which is a bit too vivid and doesn't really assist the plot. The author has a definite moral imperative preached on this topic that thankfully is not the primary theme. As such, while I could recommend it to both men and women, I couldn't do so to boys and girls.

Through memory Colgan shows us high-school life in the Eighties, and through narrative vivid high-school life in the Noughties. She's done her research. The teenage reader will not be disappointed in reading about reality for her in the present day. The adult reader will not be disappointed in sharing with the protagonist complete confusion at all the new teenage terms and ideas (which is rather the point of the book). You'll see yourself again and again in this work. And in the end, you'll be utterly surprised.

Brain Candy (in a good way)
By LAO
This is a fairly typical chick-lit sort of novel, which is not a bad thing.

There's a British girl who has a curvy-sort-of figure, and she's

dissatisfied with her love life and career. Sound familiar? Okay, what

if that girl somehow manages to enter into another realm, where she

and her parents are somehow younger, but everyone else has

stayed the same? What if her parents are completely oblivious to

what's going on, and insist that she goes to school and obey

curfew? And what if this girl takes up with the younger brother of

that gorgeous boy she knew in high school, you know, "the one who

got away"?

That is the premise of The Boy I Loved Before, a very clever, fun

story with few flaws. True, it's a little hard to understand how the

main character Flora manages to become younger and her parents

have forgotten but she and her friends haven't, etc. etc., but if you

can get past that sticky point, then you've got a fun novel which will

appeal to high school age on up. If you're looking for a good chick

lit book with an extremely interesting twist, then look no further, The

Boy I Loved Before is for you!

Zen: The Path of Paradox, by Osho

In Zen: The Path of Paradox, Osho suggests Zen as a possible bridge between East and West, and between the scientific and the spiritual. "Without science," Osho said, "the East has lost much; without meditation, the West has lost much. I am trying to bring together East and West, because together they will create the whole." Osho encourages the reader to throw off the accumulated "knowing" of a lifetime--to let go of physical, mental, and emotional tensions, to relax into the flow of an extraordinary discourse and become receptive to the present moment and the potential within.

Zen and kokoro
By ANTONIO LUIS GOMEZ
It is a good book and it is about Osho's favourite concept, Zen. In fact he talks about the same subject in all the books I have read until now (five in total)so I think he does it a lot better in "Joy" or in "Awareness" for instance. What puts me off though is how being ignorant of so many things he speaks with such an authority about EVERYTHING. One example, he says the Japanese has a word "kokoro" that means nothingness. And it is nothing about that, "kokoro" means heart (the feelings) or even mind. He says, probably not in this book but in one of the above mentioned, that during zazen, someone hits you "on the head" if you doze. No, man, it is not on the head, it is between the shoulders.

He gets the meaning of Zen right, so probably it is not such a bit deal, but he says a lot of silly things too.

Perfectly Zen, maybe.

The only book on Zen you'll ever need
By Baz
I'm ashamed to admit that my bookshelves are groaning with books about Zen, some good, some not so good. Yet this is that book I come back to for a 'refresher'. Osho always succeeds in attempting the impossible - trying to explain the inexplicable - in simple, beautiful, often poetic, often uncompromising but compassionate language, whether in the Insights For Living series, or here speaking about Zen (all Osho's books are transcribed from talks). I come away from reading Osho feeling as if I've just had a good mental hose down, getting rid of all the accumulated, caked on dross of living in an insane world.

"Don't seek, don't search, don't ask, don't knock, don't demand - relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it" p 37.

Despite some bad press, Osho was a truly great teacher, and this is one of only a handful of indispensible books on Zen. If I had to choose just one, this would be it.

[Kudos too to St Martins Press. All the books by Osho (St Martins Griffin) are a joy to read - just the right size, stay open on the page and are beautifully produced.]

Winner!!
By Sharad Yadav
Yet another outstanding book from Osho! Zen is a very abstract and complex topic. Most contemporary books on this topic have a steep learning curve that make Zen feel like an elusive concept that seems near, but far at the same time (rightfully dubbed as the Paradox). This small book explains Zen in very simple words. It will make you wonder if something as abstract as Zen can be explained so easily. This book will not teach you how to get there, but it will explain what to expect when you get there and why is it so important to get there.

The lucidity of the prose is striking and is interspersed with little stories and anecdotes that add a touch a humor (so very missing in other books on this complex and paradoxical topic). All in all this is a terrific read, that'll launch you into Zen with a real hope of touching and experiencing the paradox.

The Man Who Would Not Shut Up: The Rise of Bill O'Reilly, by Marvin Kitman

In the wake of the loss of TV's top anchormen, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, and Ted Koppel, a seismic shift has occurred in broadcast news. A revolution had already been taking place on the Fox News Channel about the way news was being presented on TV. Bill O'Reilly has been the spearhead in that radical movement, masterminded by Roger Ailes, founding father of Fox News.
To some, O'Reilly is a semi-demented cable TV talk show host, who can be an obnoxious, insufferable, opinionated, rude loudmouth whose views, the kinder ones say, are typical right wing drivel.  But there is much more to O'Reilly than what meets eye.  O'Reilly is the paradigm of idosyncrasy in television journalism.

On the rough road to the top, O'Reilly learned how to give the public what it wants and thinks it needs. From his early education at the hands of nuns to an advanced degree in Public Policy from Harvard, from working at local televisions stations and rising through the ranks to network news, O'Reilly spent nearly twenty-five years learning his craft before he became an overnight star at Fox News.
In this very intimate look at the man and what matters to him, veteran media critic Marvin Kitman explores all the experiences that led to the making of Bill O'Reilly--a non-conformist in a business that demands conformity as the price of success and a man who has risen to the top by not playing by the rules of broadcast news. Kitman claims that O'Reilly is not a kneejerk conservative, but an "independent" freethinker with a mind of his own, and he believes what journalism needs is more Bill O'Reillys.  Not screamers, the blowhards like the current O'Reilly clones rushed on the air since his success, but trained journalists, reporting the news and telling us why, in their opinion, the world is a crazy place.

Supported by twenty-nine interviews with Bill O'Reilly, Marvin Kitman pulls no punches in this powerful and hard-hitting biography that will provoke both "Spinheads" and "Anti-Spinheads."

From Publishers Weekly
Most readers probably have an opinion on Bill O'Reilly, the anchor of Fox News' successful TV talk show The O'Reilly Factor. Kitman, a self-professed "liberal TV critic"--who admits, "I don't agree with much of what [O'Reilly] says, but I like the way he says it"--probably won't change a lot of minds with this book. But it's difficult to imagine a better-researched or less-biased work about such a divisive figure as O'Reilly, a man who once told the son of a 9/11 victim to "shut up" on the air. The unauthorized biography draws on 29 interviews with O'Reilly and five years of research, tracking O'Reilly from his beginnings in Long Island through years of aggressive reporting and management faceoffs (10 news jobs in 15 years) to his perch atop the New Media pyramid and the scandals that have dogged him since. Fans of his bestselling autobiographies may find Kitman's anecdotes familiar, but O'Reilly revilers may be surprised to learn that O'Reilly at first aspired to found a magazine like the Village Voice, and the man sued for sexual harassment in 2004 is a teetotaler. Kitman's reportage on this paradoxical, maddening yet inspiring man does a fine job in letting the reader decide. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

From Booklist
Taking a different approach than the spate of recent books about television commentator O'Reilly, Newsday media critic Kitman neither excoriates nor glorifies the broadcaster. Instead, Kitman presents O'Reilly as an independent thinker who is unafraid to forcefully air his views. Drawing on interviews with O'Reilly, his friends, colleagues, and critics, Kitman evokes O'Reilly's early rebellious spirit and pugnacious character. Though not from the working-class background he likes to portray, O'Reilly's Irish Levittown boyhood was hard-knuckled in its own way. Kitman details O'Reilly's move into journalism and rise in television, against the grain of conformity that dominated among broadcasters before Fox News president Roger Ailes chanced a new formula. Kitman also details the myriad run-ins O'Reilly has had with other journalists and commentators, from Molly Ivins to Al Franken, who have denounced O'Reilly's credibility and attacked his politics. Kitman's book is unlikely to change many opinions about O'Reilly, but at least it may lower the volume of the discussion. Vanessa Bush

Fair and Balanced--Seriously.
By Bernard Chapin
Well, Marvin Kitman tells us in advance that he's a liberal but that's not going to prevent his writing an objective account of Bill O'Reilly, and that's exactly what he proceeds to do. I have no complaints about the fairness of his perspective. In fact, I am somewhat amazed that the mighty, megamouthed star did not sanction it as official biography. This is a book he should be proud of. Kitman even, at certain points, is unquestionably kindly disposed towards his subject. We are given a brief summary of his life; a life in which his standing was, for the most part, more marginal than supreme. To non-fans like myself, his immense appeal is not easy to comprehend. What does seem clear is that he is a sincere person who cares about his family and country. Behind his dramatic atmopsherics lies an iron anvil of belief. One also gets the sense that there is not anything else he'd rather be doing that getting before that microphone. In actuality, it's not hard to understand how an old-school liberal like Kitman would appreciate a guy like O'Reilly. The icon's views are not generic, and no party I know of is mercurial enough to encompass all of his positions ...and ego. As far as specifics go, I have to say that before opening The Man who Would Not Shut Up I never knew what exactly happened with the sexual harassment suit brought against him, yet I am now ashamed and angered that he allowed himself to be taken advantage of by such a sinister person. Regardless of cost, he should have taken that scammer to trial. This is a riveting and concise read.

Will the Real Bill O'Reilly Please Stand Up?
By Harriet Lesser
I have a couple of alternate titles for Marvin Kitman's latest book, "The Man Who Would Not Shut Up: The Rise of Bill O'Reilly." He could have called it "What Makes Bill Run" or "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Bill O'Reilly but were Too Freakin' Terrified to Ask." Kudos to Kitman on writing a book that is not only an in depth study of a modern media phenom, but an incisive no holds barred commentary on the state of TV journalism today - and how it got that way. Who better to present that analysis than the man who was Newsday's former top television/media critic for 35 years?

Kitman takes O'Reilly apart and puts him back together again. The result is a fair and balanced portrait that might make you change your mind about The Zone Czar. You may not come away loving him but you certainly will understand him and perhaps even respect him.

Did you know that O'Reilly holds two master's degrees; one in broadcast journalism from Boston University, the other from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard? Would it surprise you to learn that Bobby Kennedy is the politician most admired by O'Reilly during his lifetime or that he's a proponent of gun control, sex education in the schools and federal negotiation to lower pharmaceutical costs? Before I start sounding like Anne Coulter, Kitman also points out that O'Reilly can be arrogant, abrasive, egotistical and cheap.

Kitman conducted 29 interviews with O'Reilly in his office, at his home and other non-spin venues. He spoke to his childhood friends, relatives, former bosses, co-workers and checked out old videotapes of O'Reilly's early career. There are also a number of great personal photos, including an adorable little O'Reilly at his first communion and others showing a startlingly handsome teenager and young man.

Kitman provides front row seats to O'Reilly's verbal wrestling matches with Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann, Barney Frank, David Letterman, Barbara Walters, former New York Governor Hugh Carey and the country of Canada, to name a few. (The coverage of O'Reilly's famous feud with Al Franken is a gem.) On the balance side, Kitman also notes that the greatly admired ABC anchor Peter Jennings had high regard for O'Reilly's ability and considered him a friend.

And in what can be considered a major journalistic coup, Kitman answers a question that has plagued O'Reilly supporters and detractors for years. Was Fox's man of the people (a native Long Islander) raised in blue collar Levittown or upscale Westbury? For that answer and a seriously entertaining look at Bill O'Reilly and the world of television news, read Kitman's book. And that's no spin.

HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT!
By Dorothy Weiss
Author Kitman has written an indepth behind the scenes perspective on Bill O'Reilly. This book reveals a bristling, tough, knowledgeable, person, shaped by some not so nice events in his own life. We learn about some of the cruel and unfair treatment he received as a young man coming of age --- and while attempting to climb the television journalism ladder of success. In some instances, Marvin Kitman shows readers that Bill was a major contributor to his own difficulties. At other times his out-spoken candor, individuality, intelligence, talent, high-energy level, true grit, and intense work ethic served as the catalyst.

The book is well written. It overflows with past and current O'Reilly capers. Just to mention a few; with Joey Bishop, Keith Hernandez, Mike Wallace, Mike Kinsley, Sen. John McCain, Roger Ailes, Monica Collins, Madeleine Albright, Geraldo Rivera, Levittown, the Marx brothers old house, Al Franken, Keith Olbermann, David Letterman, Peter Jennings.

Thank you Marvin Kitman for an informative book, but you could have included at least one interview with Ms Arthelle Neville, who used to critique Bill O'Reilly on his own "No-spin zone" show. I enjoyed watching that portion of the show. He accepted her criticisms with good humor. Her commentary in this book might have been very interesting.
