The Captured: A True Story of Abduction by Indians on the Texas Frontier, by Scott Zesch

On New Year's Day in 1870, ten-year-old Adolph Korn was kidnapped by an Apache raiding party. Traded to Comaches, he thrived in the rough, nomadic existence, quickly becoming one of the tribe's fiercest warriors. Forcibly returned to his parents after three years, Korn never adjusted to life in white society. He spent his last years in a cave, all but forgotten by his family.
That is, until Scott Zesch stumbled over his own great-great-great uncle's grave. Determined to understand how such a "good boy" could have become Indianized so completely, Zesch travels across the west, digging through archives, speaking with Comanche elders, and tracking eight other child captives from the region with hauntingly similar experiences. With a historians rigor and a novelists eye, Zesch paints a vivid portrait of life on the Texas frontier, offering a rare account of captivity.

From Booklist
On New Year's Day, 1870, Adolph Korn, the author's ancestor and son of German immigrants, was captured by three Apaches near his family's cabin in central Texas. Adolph was traded to a band of Quahada Comanches, with whom he lived until November 1872, when the Comanches traded their captives for those held by the U.S. Army. Adolph was irrevocably changed. Considering himself Indian, he lived in a cave, and died alone in 1900. The author's search into Korn's sad life led him to the similar stories of eight other children captured in Texas between 1865 and 1871. Drawing on his tenacious research and interviews with the captives' descendants, Zesch compiles a gripping account of the lives of these children as they lived and traveled with their Indian captors. He delves into the reasons for their "Indianization," which for most of them lasted the rest of their lives, and discusses why they couldn't adjust to white society. A fascinating, meticulously documented chronicle of the often-painful confrontations between whites and Indians during the final years of Indian Territory. Deborah Donovan

From AudioFile
On New Year's Day 1870, 10-year-old Adolph Korn was kidnapped by Indians. Nor was his abduction painless. First struck down with a pistol, he later fell off a horse and was crippled. Yet by the time he was restored to his parents--just three years later--Adolph was a Commanche who could never adjust to the society that had "rescued" him from savagery. This and other tales of white Indians, stunningly written by one of Adolph's distant relatives, reveal how subjective--perhaps even mistaken--is our understanding of family and what constitutes the good life. Golden-voiced Grover Gardner charges his rich baritone with the thrill of discovery. B.H.C. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A fascinating read
By Joanr
Anyone who longs for the good old' days of the wild west should read this book. There was cruelty on the part of the native Americans and the whites both, but the whites were just flat-out sleazy when it came to keeping treaties. The dissolution of the buffalo is a disgrace. This is a fascinating story that explains why many captives preferred to stay with their captors. The Comanche had an idyllic lifestyle before the invasion of the white men. This book is a history lesson worked in as a back drop to a great story. I recommend it.

A thought-provoking page-turner
By Elizabeth Clare
A few years back, Scott Zesch was doing family history when he ran across a grave of a long-lost ancestor named Adolf Korn. Scott eventually learned that Adolf had been a captive of the Comanche Indians for several years as a boy. After being "rescued," he was always strange, and ended up living his life as a hermit in a cave.

Zesch expanded his research, and the result was "The Captured," a fascinating book about children captured by the Comanches, their experiences, and what became of them in later years. Zesch discovered that children younger than puberty tended to assimilate almost immediately; they forgot their native language (English or German) and even lost their attachment to their mothers. Zesch examines this heartbreaking psychology through his research into the lives of the individuals, which he relates in vivid detail.

"The Captured" is a thoughtful book that both sweeps you up in human drama and leaves you with a lot of things to think about.

The Heartless Stone: A Journey Through the World of Diamonds, Deceit, and Desire, by Tom Zoellner

In 2000, Tom Zoellner purchased a diamond engagement ring and proposed. His girlfriend said, "yes" and then, suddenly, walked out of his life making Tom the owner of a used engagement ring.  Instead of hitting the self-help shelves of his local bookstore, he hit the road travelling to diamond mines in Africa, Canada, India, Brazil and Russia to discover the true worth of this shining gem.  He travelled to Japan to understand how diamonds were linked with engagements and delved into the history of our own American romance with the diamond ring. He gained entry to DeBeers, the London diamond merchants. He visited shopping mall jewellers with starry-eyed couples. Through all of his travels, he searched for an answer to the question "How has one stone created empires, ruined lives, inspired lust and emptied wallets throughout history?" A diamond version of Susan Orleans's The Orchid Thief, Tom Zoellner's The Heartless Stone is a journey  to the cold heart of the world's most unyielding gem.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. After his fiancée dumps him and he's left with a diamond ring to unload, Men's Health contributing editor Zoellner crisscrosses the globe unlocking the mystique of this glittering stone "that brings misery to millions of people across the world." Zoellner probes how "blood diamonds" are used to fund vicious civil wars in Africa; how De Beers, seeing new markets to exploit, linked diamonds to the ancient yuino ceremony in Japan and played on caste obsession in India; and how India is pushing Belgium and Israel out of the gem trade. The author is expert with vivid prose: Australia's Argyle deposit is "shaped a little like a human molar"; impoverished urchins in the diamond-smuggling haven of the Central African Republic get high on bread-and-shoe polish sandwiches; and a Brazilian miner finds a rich concentration of river diamonds but fritters away much of the loot on prostitutes and booze, and eventually is ruined by a dishonest money changer. Politically conscious consumers can now avoid African and Brazilian mines teeming with human rights abuses. Canada pulls $1.2 billion worth of rough diamonds out of the tundra every year while enforcing tough environmental laws, and a Florida company uses Siberian high-pressure chambers to create low-cost chemically perfect diamonds. This is a superior piece of reportage. (June)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Historically, the workings of the diamond industry, heavily controlled until recently by the De Beers cartel, have been filled with clandestine meetings and covert operations, and its mythos even pervades popular culture. Zoellner has traveled the globe learning about the remarkably large supply of diamonds both mined and manufactured for industrial cutting and the jewelry trade. In the countries where they are mined, they represent both auspicious wealth and abject poverty. The citizens have long been exploited by international corporate investors and bloodthirsty local warlords anxious to supply the public with a token of eternal love. Teens may be surprised to learn that the must have diamond engagement ring is the result of a brilliant 1930s De Beers marketing strategy, which sought to influence the thoughts, tastes, habits, and fashions of Middle America. Heavy promotion and forced scarcity continue to fuel our inclination for the gems. Readers will be alternately fascinated and reviled by this exposé, which is equally well suited to casual reading and research.–Brigeen Radoicich, Fresno County Office of Education, CA

The dirty secret of diamonds has been out for some time, and with good reason. It's got all the requisite ingredients of intriguing journalism: greed, sex, gaping economic disparities, and glamour. It's too bad it took a failed engagement to prompt this book, but Zoellner has risen from the romantic ashes with Heartless Stone. As The Wall Street Journal points out, he's no geologist, but he is a careful reporter. He doesn't miss a stop on the diamond road, hopping from Africa to South America to the British Isles in pursuit of the gem whose exclusivity is based only on the tight control of a few greedy individuals. That little blue Tiffany box might never look the same.

Heartbreaking but necessary information about the toll diamonds take
By GadgetChick
So, I liked Tom's brand-new book about uranium so much I decided to go read some things from his backlist, and The Heartless Stone - a book about diamonds and what the diamond trade has done to the world - was the first book I started with. All I can say about this book is that it is amazing. It's not often that a book can completely change the way you view an object you see everyday, like a diamond. I am not a fan of diamonds personally - and after reading this book I can safely say I never will own a diamond. Basically, those big, perfectly clear, perfectly white diamonds everyone loves come from more or less only one place: an impoverished, war-torn country in Africa where diamonds are sold to buy weapons to continue wars against unarmed civilians, or for a pittance of money totally unrelated to the final purchase price you pay in the jewelry store. The most striking moment in the book came, for me, when Tom writes that "the diamond on the finger of a bride dancing in a Minnesota country club might very well have been fished out of the eviscerated bowels of a miner in Angola." Although the diamond industry would like us to believe that the era of "conflict diamonds" is over, Tom explains that it is not, and there is no concrete way to ensure diamonds of a certain type (clear, large, flawless) have NOT come from a war-torn region of the world. There's also the issue of the racist, terroristic and monopolistic policies of the DeBeers corporation, which still controls a huge percentage of the world's supply of diamonds.

If you still want a diamond after you read this book, there are some alternatives to buying a DeBeers-controlled, African-mined diamond, according to Tom:
- Buy a "synthetic" or "lab-created" diamond. These have gotten better and better over the years and despite DeBeers' efforts to suppress the creation and marketing of lab diamonds, they are widely available. If you want an over-one-carat, colorless diamond free of inclusions, a synthetic diamond (Moissanite is one brand name) is your best bet.
- Buy a colored diamond. Colored diamonds are being mined in Australia, Canada and a few other places, and are not the spoils of war or the product of slave labor, in most cases. Smaller yellow diamonds, "champagne" diamonds and "cognac" diamonds are almost certainly from Australia and are conflict free, although environmental damage is being done to mine them.
- Buy from one of the online jewelers that DOES care about the origins of their stones and will certify to you that the diamonds are conflict-free. Brilliantearth.com is one of these jewelers.

However, I say buck the system and don't get a diamond. The diamond doesn't make you engaged, your commitment to your partner makes you engaged. You don't "need" a diamond just because you're getting married. That big beautiful diamond represents love to some; to me, they now represent concentrated human suffering, and the wholesale rape of the environment. It's all in how you look at it.

It would be great if more people read this book and understood the connection between their consumer choices for an object none of us needs, and how the degradation of human life and the environment gets perpetuated.

It's EVERYONE'S Fault
By Global Citizen
While there are many great aspects to this book, perhaps the most notable was the manner in which Zollner described the interconnectedness of countries all over the world in creating the problem of conflict stones. Rather than simply focusing on the warring zones, Zollner talked extensively about the roles different countries have played, and continue to play, in creating the diamond industry as the public knows it. For a book specifically focused on the conflict aspect of the diamond trade, start with "Blood Diamond" by Greg Campbell, and return to this for details of different players (most importantly, De Beers).

Eye Opening
By J. Martens
Incredibly interesting book about the world of diamonds. Make no mistake, its not a novel or a story, its an expose. The book takes you around the world to almost all the continents and just about every country involved in the diamond trade. A little lengthy at times with stories that are barely related to the subject, so I can't give it a full 5 stars.

Read this book if you love to learn. Read this book after you have bought a diamond ring and you'll feel like crap. Read it before you buy and you'll opt for a ruby or emerald instead.

Amazing.

The Next Enlightenment: Integrating East and West in a New Vision of Human Evolution, by Walter Truett Anderson

In The Next Enlightenment, Walter Truett Anderson treats Eastern spiritual traditions and Western philosophy, psychology and science as steps along the same evolutionary path rather than as completely separate and incompatible schools of thought.

In the opening chapters, he looks at five different "Liberation Movements" that emerged in the modern world: the eighteenth century European Enlightenment; the nineteenth century upheaval resulting from the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species; and in the twentieth century, existentialism, psychoanalysis, and the human potential movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He then argues that this century's next surge of thought and action will regard the exploration of the physical universe and the study of human consciousness as two sides of the same coin, and equally important, come to understand personal enlightenment as a natural process of growth rather than a supernatural gift bestowed upon a chosen few.

Elegantly argued and written with a sense of humor, The Next Enlightenment offers a refreshing vision of how the ancient quest for enlightenment is taking on new life in a rapidly-changing, globalizing world.

From Publishers Weekly
Anderson offers a skillful and mostly successful re-description of the "Eastern" enlightenment experience-which dissolves or at least softens the boundaries of self-in terms accessible to Western philosophy and science. Although acclimatized to the Californian atmosphere of human potential movements and alternative spiritualities and psychologies, Anderson's writing exudes a savvy and secular tone that should please readers interested in enlightenment experiences without spiritual entanglements. He shows restraint by rationing references to "cosmic consciousness" and "paradigm shifts," and he questions whether a revolution in human consciousness is really just around the corner-a retreat from the Aquarian enthusiasms of the 1960s and early 1970s, which he covered as a journalist. Today he favors a longer view, while remaining convinced that "many or most (possibly all) people have transcendent experiences in their lives that they do not understand or satisfactorily integrate." To put these experiences in perspective, Anderson surveys not only the New Age as generally defined, but its background in the European Enlightenment, evolutionary biology, cosmology, psychology and existentialism, as well as some possible convergences with cognitive science research over the past two decades. Anderson is widely read and strikes a good balance between clarity and accuracy, with the exception of some cheap shots at "organized religion," which come off like dogmatic anti-dogmatism. His (qualified) endorsement of hallucinogens as an aid to enlightenment may also raise a few eyebrows.

KICKSTART YOUR SELF-EVOLUTION
By Jon Fobes
In his famous essay called "What is Enlightenment" philosopher Immanuel Kant says enlightenment is simply our ability to determine our own lives without leaning excessively upon authority, tradition or established values: in short, taking responsibility for our views as our views.
Walter Truett Anderson takes up where Kant left off with an incredible book that urges a form of personal and cultural evolution he calls, "The Next Enlightenment," which reminds us that "ordinary maturity is not the ultimate stage of human development."
"We usually are satisfied to think of maturity as growing up within a culture to fit a particular society's roles, rules and expectations," Anderson writes. But the kind of maturity encouraged in "The Next Enlightenment" is more a matter of growing up beyond culture. He cites "the Big Three" stumbling blocks to maturity as, "Cosmology, identity, and epistemology; how you think about the universe, who you think you are, and what you believe about belief."
Anderson hopes "The Next Enlightenment" will show us that culture and all the values, beliefs and ideas it promotes is a "product of fallible beings ... only one of many ways to manage human interaction, and that its canon of universal truths is only one of many ways to describe the world." His book is a recipe for diversity and a primer on how to think outside the box; it provides a helpful and engaging introduction for those new to the minefield of cross-disciplinary thought and a wonderful review for those of us who read in this area daily.
Because straightforward descriptions often fail to elucidate the inexplicable, writers of such texts are always on the lookout for good metaphors, and "The Next Enlightenment" is full of them. For example, Anderson writes that, "People become so involved in their identity-narratives that they become lost in them like some brilliant builder who constructs a wonderful maze of gardens and buildings and then cannot find his way out of them into the world beyond - who indeed forgets that there is a world beyond."
Finally, Anderson manages to convey complex ideas with wit and humor in abundance. For example, he cites the story of the Buddha's tooth to show how we simultaneously idolize and misunderstand our great teachers.
After the Buddha's cremation in 480 B.C. some of his followers sifted through the ashes and found two teeth - "apparently the only ones Buddha had left in an age innocent of floss and fluoride" - both of which currently serve as sacred relics, one at the Temple of the Tooth in Sri Lanka and the other at the Tooth Relic Pagoda on the outskirts of Beijing. But ironically the teeth are only sacred to those Buddhists who misunderstand or forget the Buddha's main teaching, "That everything is illusory and transient, and attachment to anything is the ultimate foolishness." And we might add, "Especially teeth!"
That every time, place and people has its own version of the Buddha's tooth - and that culture wars and "the battle for god" rage across our newspaper pages daily - only shows how timely and important "The Next Enlightenment" is.

A mediocre book on an excellent subject
By A reader
Contrary to the review below, this is not a terrible book. I can see what Stacy means when she complains that Anderson selects from the scientific literature only that which supports his belief system, but just about every author writing on this subject does that as well. Anderson shows good intuition in choosing a subject -- cultural evolution -- that in my opinion represents the most important category for nonfiction books today. And while he may not be on the cutting edge of his subject, he is in the right area. The very fact that this book is out there adds to the weight of literature in this area. So while Anderson's thinking may be fairly mediocre, it is not as bad as the review below makes it seem. There were several good insights and a lot that confirms and restates what others have written on this most interesting subject.

A Valuable Guide
By montaigne
I spent the better part of today reading this book, and I don't regret it. I find one of the other reader responses misleading because originality of ideas is not necessarily the most relevant criterium by which this book should be judged.
Look, the strength of this book is that it is easy to read because it is direct and unpretentious and addresses the concerns and needs of those of us who have been struggling with expanding our consciousness.
Whether Anderson has new information for us depends on how much we know and what the the nature of our personal experience is. Sometimes a book speaks to us precisely because we are familiar with the subject matter and we benefit from a different take which we experience as fresh, insightful - and, yes, reassuring when we are on a difficult personal journey. In that respect reading The New Englightenment has been a valuable experience for me. Wilber's books play a different role in my life.

Comma Sense: A Fun-damental Guide to Punctuation, by Richard Lederer, John Shore

Are you confounded by commas, addled by apostrophes, or queasy about quotation marks? Do you believe a bracket is just a support for a wall shelf, a dash is something you make for the bathroom, and a colon and semicolon are large and small intestines? If so, language humorists Richard Lederer and John Shore (with the sprightly aid of illustrator Jim McLean), have written the perfect book to help make your written words perfectly precise and punctuationally profound.
Don't expect Comma Sense to be a dry, academic tome. On the contrary, the authors show how each mark of punctuation―no matter how seemingly arcane―can be effortlessly associated with a great American icon: the underrated yet powerful period with Seabiscuit; the jazzy semicolon with Duke Ellington; even the rebel apostrophe with famed outlaw Jesse James. But this book is way more than a flight of whimsy. When you've finished Comma Sense, you'll not only have mastered everything you need to know about punctuation through Lederer and Shore's simple, clear, and right-on-the-mark rules, you'll have had fun doing so. When you're done laughing and learning, you'll be a veritable punctuation whiz, ready to make your marks accurately, sensitively, and effectively.

From Publishers Weekly
Lederer has long been one of America's most popular experts on language and grammar, but here he seems to be taking his cue from Lynn Truss in focusing on the ins and outs of commas, semi-colons and the other little dots and dashes that punctuate our writing. Lederer, with writer and editor Shore, tries a bit too hard to convince readers of the importance of good punctuation ("Good punctuation makes for a good life") and to make the whole business amusing (the period is "a mark so dinky that farsighted fleas court it"); disquisitions on Seabiscuit and Albert Einstein's hair are distractions rather than entertainments. And all the talk of how the apostrophe is like Jesse James explains less than Lederer's straightforward usage examples, such as the serious differences in meaning between these two sentences: "The butler stood in the doorway and called the guests names"; "The butler stood in the doorway and called the guests' names." Yes, punctuation is important, and the bold-face print for basic rules does make this an easy-to-use guide for the punctuationally perplexed.

From Booklist
Lederer is a prolific author of language books, most notably the Anguished English series. Here, along with professional journalist Shore, he offers brief chapters on 13 punctuation marks. This primer will be useful to anyone needing a refresher course on the basics of punctuation. Aware that most people find grammatical advice to be rather dry and sometimes intimidating subject matter, Lederer employs a jocular tone intended to disarm wary readers. Thus, the dash ("fluid and graceful") is introduced by way of Fred Astaire; Shirley Temple acts as a stand-in for the hyphen ("perky, yet resolute"); and Jesse James gets the apostrophe ("a tad flamboyant"). To keep things from getting altogether too cute, Lederer explains the finer points of the exclamation point by quoting wacky dialogue from the I Love Lucy show. Concise instruction from a fun-loving grammarian. Joanne Wilkinson

Review

“Comma Sense is a clear, entertaining, and just plain helpful guide to the American rules of punctuation.” ―Lynne Truss, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves

“Of my 465 books on punctuation---I've read them all---Comma Sense is the wisest and funniest. It's the only one you really need.” ―Bryan A. Garner, author of Garner's Modern American Usage

“A thorough field guide to the pesky little critters of the punctuation forest.Lederer and Shore hit the marks!” ―Bill Walsh, author of The Elephants of Style

“Who else would call the exclamation point 'this titan of tingle, this prince of palpitation'? Who else would call the apostrophe the Jesse James of punctuation? Who else would compare the dash to Fred Astaire, the semicolon to Duke Ellington, and parentheses (yes, my darlings) to Louella Parsons? It can only be Richard Lederer, Viceroy of Verbivores, and his trusty sidekick, John Shore.” ―Patricia T. O'Conner, author of Woe Is I

“Punctuation needn't be perplexing or painful, as Richard Lederer and John Shore make abundantly clear. Comma Sense is full of easy-to-understand guidance for the grammatically challenged---and loads of laughs besides!” ―Martha Barnette, author of Dog Days and Dandelions

“If America had ‘Living National Treasures,' the way Japan and Korea do, Richard Lederer would be one.” ―Barbara Wallraff, author of Your Own Words

“Now a pair of U.S. writers has joined the grammar book sweepstakes, guiding us through the correct usage of 13 punctuation marks - period, question mark, exclamation point, comma, semicolon, colon, dash, apostrophe, quotation marks, parentheses, brackets, hyphen and ellipsis - in Comma Sense (St. Martin's Press, $22.95, 140 pp). Authors Richard Lederer and John Shore don't take Truss' no-prisoners approach, but rather try to convince us that getting the comma in the right place can be fun.

"The power's in the punctuation, baby," write Lederer and Shore. "And we're gonna show you how to be a power pack of punctuational potency."

Lederer is the author of more than 30 books on the English language. Shore is a magazine writer and editor. Together they've linked punctuation marks to various American personalities: The dash is Fred Astaire, the exclamation point is Lucy Ricardo, the question mark is Albert Einstein and (my favorite) parentheses are gossip columnist Louella Parsons.

Okay, it's goofy, but if this book stops just one person from mixing up the proper use of "its" and "it's" ever again, I hope it's nominated for the Pulitzer.

For, alas, punctuation not only pays, it matters. As Lederer and Shore point out, "Like it or not, writing well - not artistically, not ornately, not floridly, but just competently - really is the difference between being largely able to define your own life and having much of your life defined for you. Writing is, in a word, power."

Writing well is important for business, but it also can be crucial in love, the writers warn. Do you want to say, "I would like to tell you that I love you. I can't stop thinking that you are one of the prettiest women on Earth," or "I would like to tell you that I love you. I can't. Stop thinking that you are one of the prettiest women on Earth." As Lederer and Shore say, "Punctuation can mean the difference between a second date and a restraining order.” ―Margo Hammond, St. Petersburg Times

“Lederer and Shore's Comma Sense-bear in mind that it's their first collaboration-is speckled with humor so lame that it keeps falling on its assonance." Whoever wrote that callous, brutal comment about Comma Sense must be lacking in their own sense of humor. Oh, wait, that comment was written by Lederer and Shore. My mistake. Yes, this book is truly unique! If language can be considered a cartoon, then Comma Sense is Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, the Road Runner, Batman, the Far Side, Charlie Brown, and Donald Duck all rolled into one. Each chapter is devoted to one of 13 punctuation marks. These punctuation marks have fun, make fun, and are fun! My favorite is the dash, who is compared to Fred Astaire: "The dash emboldens eloquence; Fred Astaire embodies elegance. Plus, they're both skinny." Comma Sense spins tales that sound like facts until you realize that they co-exist with punctuation marks in the wild and crazy world of Ledererean lingofantasy. "Little Shirley Temple chirped, '...And most of all, I'd like to thank that most wonderful of punctuation marks, the hyphen, which I personify!'" Seriously, this book has been cited as the clearest source on punctuation ever written. It is necessary for saving the human race from its dangerous slide into a punctuationless exclamation point of no return! It tells you everything you wanted to know about punctuation but were afraid to ask. If you want to see punc rock, open the pages of this comprehensive, hilarious book. Here is a song you will find in it that showcases the seven coordinating conjunctions. It is sung to the tune of the Julie Andrews smash hit, "Do, Re, Mi." Go ahead and sing it out loud! If your neighbors complain, give them this review and tell them to buy the book!

And, a word, a real small word;
But, it's spelled with just one t;
Or, a stick we use to row;
Nor, half of a cold countreeeee;
Yet, you bet it rhymes with wet;
For, one number more than three;
So a button on your fly-
And that brings us back to do, re, mi!” ―Dave Morice, Word Ways

Comma Sense: A Fun-damental Guide to Pronunciation.
By Peninsula Cliff
For me, personally, this was the right book at the right time.

I was searching for a source that would support or contrast the recent (British) publication entitled: EATS, SHOOTS AND LEAVES which, while an excellent and useful guide, left me confounded regarding its appropriateness for American English. This matter was settled promptly by the authors of the subject.

My recent re-interest in writing improvement and excellence, aside from standard business letters, has been spurned by an increased usage of email.

I am familiar with Richard Lederer's work and use of humor, and this lived up to and exceeded my expectations: All issues pertaining to punctuation are addressed; and all conceivable questions answered.

Additionally, the handy "review" section following the last chapter makes this an invaluable, easy-to-use, portable guide.

This is far more than recommendable: it's necessary!

Buy it , you'll like it.
By Hjordes Norman
This is the unique book that has you mentally tallying up your friend's birthdays before you get to the last chapter (lets see... I can buy it for Ken, and Susie, and my daughter so she won't dog-ear my copy...). I picked this up for an educationally boring read that would knock me out at bedtime and instead found myself staying up most of the night laughing. Comma Sense is the darndest, funniest, wittiest educational book I've ever read. You can't help but learn something... it sort of seeps into your brain while you're distracted with a mental picture of what the Andrew Sisters would look like if viewed from above (yes, of COURSE they would look like...well, read Chapter 13 and you'll find out). I would write more, but I have to rush out now and buy extra copies for everyone I know.

A Method to the Madness
By J. Dellinger
Aviva Goldfarb has focused on a time when craziness and chaos plague many households with children -- dinnertime on weeknights -- and she has offered a method to tame the madness. Organized in a manner that complements and reflects her highly sucessful on-line recipe service,[...], her new book offers recipes organized in a way that makes weekly meal planning, cooking, and grocery shopping easier and less time-consuming. Our family has used the on-line service for at least two years. As a result, we are healthier, our kids try many more foods than they would otherwise (even dishes with vegetables in them!), and cooking is interesting and engaging (because of the variety of recipes) and easy (because of the limited number of ingredients for most recipes and clear instructions). The book, like the on-line service, offers recipes organized by week, and grocery lists are available online. The book's menus loosely follow the seasons of a year, and include many vegetarian options along with more standard fare, as well as soups and salmon recipes more than fancy enough for the occasional dinner guest. Helpful indices included at the back of the book offer both creative and practical approaches to meal planning as well. The Category Index allows you to quickly scan scramble favorites, crowd pleasers, kids' favorites, potluck and picnic dishes, 20 minutes and under dishes, and meals that can be made a day ahead, just to name a few. Nutritional information is provided for each recipe. I have not simply read this book, I have used the recipe service, featuring many of the recipes included in this book, since the service began. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who ever thought they could not cook, for anyone who wants to cook a little healthier, and for everyone who wants to make their evenings with their kids a little calmer. The Six O'Clock Scramble -- it's not just a book, it's a way of life!

Best cookbook ever.
By Gretchen
I bought this when I returned to work when my daughter was 10 months old. I initially bought it for the downloadable shopping lists, but instead of going by week, I go by seasons, flip through to find 2-3 recipes that jump out at me, and buy the ingredients for those. The next week, I pick up where I left off. The meals have simple ingredients, interesting flavors, and are easy to prepare. 2 minor things: the meals are 30 minutes to prepare, but may take longer to cook, so keep an eye on that. Also, some of the recommended dish sizes are on the small side, so I sometimes size up (9x13 instead of 8x11, for instance) to make sure that it fits well without bubbling over.

Quick & easy, not always delicious
By A. Ingraham
This cookbook is great if you're looking for fast meals you can whip together without a lot of fuss. There are probably 200+ recipes in this book so in there you'll find at least a few things you like! Having found just one or two meals we'll add to our list of favorites makes it worth buying.

Having said that though, I didn't find the meals terribly interesting or incredibly tasty. Some don't even appear all that healthy, but I suppose 'healthy' can mean different things to different people. Some recipes were pretty good, like Goddess Chicken - but how can it be bad with a bottle of delicious dressing dumped in with artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes! Other things seemed more like cookbook space fillers, such as 'taco night' (brown ground meat, serve with standard fixins'). There were a few recipes we tried that made me say, 'where's the flavor?' (like pasta with beans). And looking at the ingredients, it just wasn't in there, nothing magical happened upon cooking.

I didn't find the weekly menus all that helpful since I wasn't interested in a good number of the recipes, but overall it was worth the purchase. It's a little hard to navigate sometimes, as it's arranged by season and not by type of protein/pasta/cuisine, so I spend a little time just flipping through pages each week and picking out recipes to try that week. It won't replace my other favorite cookbooks (like my favorite from Cooking Light), but it's nice to have on hand for some quick & easy dinners.

Sunday puzzle any day
By A Customer
Interesting and challenging, with good themes, the 50 contemporary puzzles are what one hopes to find Sunday mornings. There are 50 old puzzles in the beginning of the book in chronological order from the l940's through the eighties, and the language and style in the earliest ones is unfamiliar and daunting. By working them from the latest back, I was able to learn a little as I went, and enjoyed them more. Overall, a good head rub.

Good crossword/calendar combination
By K. W. Schreiter
This desk calendar features 53 New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles. The puzzle grids measure about 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" on the left hand page. Puzzle titles and authors are listed but the original publication dates are not (all date from the Will Shortz era). The Across clues appear on the left page and the Downs spill onto the right page. The seven days of the week are listed on the far right side each with six lightly-ruled lines of blank space for daily notes. In the back are the crossword answers, an extensive list of international holidays and a two-page 2009 calendar. The book is spiral bound with sturdy cardboard front and back covers and thick pages.

Eager to get and totally disappointed when I received this!!
By Stead Fast
1. The paper is cheap and spongy, so I can't use ink because it goes through to the other side.

2. Because paper is smaller than these books used to have, the type face is also smaller-- in fact, hard to read. Numbers blur, so sixes look like eights, etc.

Thus, I am so ucomfortable working with the puzzles that I am about to throw out the book.

I am horrified that the publisher released such a shoddy piece of work.

Brilliant, useful writing by a first-class thinker and teacher
By Kindle Customer
Susan Jeffers is a national expert on fear and tools to move past fear. This book is a recent effort, and is in a sense the next stage past her best-seller "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway." She takes what has to be one of the most unnerving topics for most people to even consider, embracing the uncertainty of life, and offers pragmatic, clear tools for doing exactly that. Just the discussion of letting go of outcomes should be required reading for anyone 10 years old and up. While the book has a spiritual leaning it is by no means necessary to be of any spiritual belief, or even spiritual at all, to find this book highly useful.
