An excellent source

When I first saw the rather average to poor ratings that this book has received, I was very surprised. I remember getting the book as part of as part of a set from The Science Fiction Book Club when I graduated from junior high (1980!!). By that time I had read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit several times, but never The Silmarillion, which was also part of the set.

I vividly remember staying up late at night reading the entries of this book, sometimes just to refresh my memory, sometimes for more information, sometimes just to read the same stories over and over again. I never tired of the world Tolkien created, and he left me in awe as a teenager. I'm far from being a teenager, but am still in awe of his creation.

When I finally got around to reading The Silmarillion, I found this book to be indispensable. As a 14-year old - and while I would consider myself an advanced reader for my age back then, I was by no means a prodigy - The Silmarillion was a difficult but incredibly magnificent read. In all honesty, I compared it to the Christian Bible and Bullfinch's Mythology, and found that I enjoyed it far greater than either, and any mythology I had read previously (which was quite a bit). If we can analogize Morgoth's war with the Valar as Satan's with heaven, then I can safely say (IMHO) that Tolkien's interpretation (although it wasn't allegory - we all know that he despised allegory in fiction - but certainly the similarities between Manwe and Melkor/Morgoth are significant and unavoidable) was more interesting than anyone who has ever attempted to re-tell that story. Or tell a similar story of "great evil thrown down by forces of good". Which means, in essence, better than just about every epic fantasy ever written.

Okay, I'm back from my tangent. :-)

Without The New Tolkien Companion, I would have been utterly lost back then. Tolkien's world was so rich and detailed, that I had a certain amount of difficulty following along. Imagine, a reader of fantasy, and mythology, having difficulty keeping up with the "different" names in the books, as well as the numerous story lines. When turning to this book, it always helped give me that extra piece of information that I needed to get a full picture of what I was reading. It never bothered me that there weren't page numbers or references to back anything up, because I found that Tyler far more often than not (in fact, I can't think of a "not" example) got things right. What I appreciated most about this book, and here is where it differs greatly from Foster's The Complete Guide to Middle-earth, is that Tyler's entries told stories. Foster's - an excellent book - also gave the necessary identifying information, but because he "indexed" his text with references to the books, he had built-in limitations on space (not to mention that god-awful cover art that for some reason "we" all loved back then - look at the hat on Aragorn!).

Regardless, this isn't meant to be a comparison between the two books, and a judgment on which is better. They're both excellent, and they take entirely different approaches to cataloging information. Both styles should be able to be appreciated by anyone.

I'm a pretty serious Tolkien fan (though I've never worn elf ears or dressed up like Gandalf), and I have both books. If you want textual references, Foster is for you. If you like the story, then this book is for you.

Great Read!

Unlike some of the other reviewers of this book, I for one did like it very much in fact. Of course it doesn't have every last tidbit of every last detail for all the entries. It is already over 700 pages for gosh sakes. If the author tried to cram in any more info, we probably could no longer afford the book and it would have to have an incredibly flimsy bind on it in order to accommodate that many pages. The bind would also most likely fall apart.

I recommend this book not for the Tolkien scholar but rather for the vast majority of Tolkien fans out there who just want to have an all-encompassing recourse to refer. I found this book particularly helpful when I was reading the Silmarillion for the first time (which in itself is a daunting task with so many proper names tossed around. I used the Companion book in order to figure out the basics of some of the important people, places and things.

As far as encyclopedias of Tolkien are concerned, this book is probably one of the best compared to others out there. Excellent resource.

Now police detectives, Mike and his father, Tom, confront 1904 New York City, which bristles with gangs vying for control over territory, the most recent being the East River near Hell’s Gate Bridge. Mike foils a smuggling operation and propels himself into the world of gangland violence typical of the time: big guns, brass knuckles, and lead pipes. The body count is high, the vocabulary low, as Mike and his partners skirt death, try to prevent gang warfare, and avoid Tammany Hall political shenanigans. Mike’s personal issues—his family, his temper, and his love for a prostitute—make him seem real, but most other characters are merely names. The portrayal of the General Slocum ferry disaster is the most powerful scene in the book, including the aftermath—heartbreaking rows of coffins and sobbing survivors lined up to identify loved ones. As compelling as this story could have been, however, the wooden and clichéd dialogue, along with the author’s tendency to backfill the action, diminishes the novel’s impact. Good but not as good as previous entries

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two novels by this author, dealing with historical mysteries through the person of Tom Braddock, who I think is one of the best characters of this genre ever created. I was, therefore, disappointed that in this third installment in his series Crabbe aged Tom Braddock to the point where he can no longer be the starring character, and instead put the focus on Tom's son, Mike, who I do not find nearly as interesting. Moreover, I found the actual mysteries much more compelling in the first two books, particularly in Suspension. Nonetheless, I really like this author's writing and the way he weaves his characters in with actual historical events, so from that perspective I'd still recommend this book, just not as highly as I'd recommend his first two.

Terrific Yarn

I finished Richard Crabbe's Hell's Gate last week and wanted to write a review because I liked it so much. I read it over the course of three nights - I hated to put it down. It has action, mystery, great characters and plot,and atmosphere in abundance. It takes you back in time to a much grittier old New York. The writing is evocative and the images stay with you. It is much more than just a Summertime read, and is clearly the result of meticulous research. I think you don't just get a story, and a period in time, so right without really knowing your stuff. And Crabbe knows his stuff. I read Clancy, Brown, Patterson, all the usual best sellers (and some heavier stuff when I'm on a self-improvement crusade!)- their books are a lot of fun. But I find that many of their stories don't stay with you. You read them and forget them. Not with Hell's Gate. Crabbe transports you, and you feel like you can literally see, hear and breathe in what it was like to live in a New York that was even more colorful than it is today. Highest recommendation. You will not be disappointed.

A great evolutionary, social and sexual story

This book by Desmond Morris is written from a space of deep appreciation. The following quote from the book captures the spirit is was written in well:

"Every human female has a beautiful body. The brilliant end point of millions of years of evolution, loaded with amazing adjustments and subtle refinements, it is the most remarkable organism on the planet."

The book is organized into chapters by body region. It starts with the hair and ends with the feet. Each chapter talks about the evolution of a particular area of the body, its significance in sexual signaling and presents interesting customs and social practices that have developed throughout history associated with that area.

For example, in the chapter on feet, Desmond Morris points out feet are a gender signal. Women's feet are smaller and narrower. This seems pretty obvious, but he goes on to discuss how the shoe is a symbol of the female genitals and cites the nursery rhyme "The Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe" as an example of this creeping into the unconscious mythological arena.. He also goes on to explain foot fetishes and how people leave a scented trail when they walk barefoot. He points out that some tribal people can use this scent to identify who walked down a given path and approximately when!

The chapter on buttocks follows a similar approach and talks about how display of the buttocks became a symbol of both something offensive and sexually arousing. For example, he talks about how apes have flat behinds, whereas humans have round ones because of their upright posture. The prominent human derriere was reputed to be something the devil could not replicate when he took human form and that early Christians displayed their buttocks to ward off evil spirits. The buttocks of the devil was also said to take the form of a second face, which witches were said to kiss. This is the point in history where the expression "kiss my arse" entered our lexicon. According to Morris, it originated in an early Christian practice!

This book may not be for everyone, but if you have an interest in the evolutionary purpose of anatomical variations between males and females, stories about the history of fascination with different areas of the female anatomy as well as trends in female fashion and ornamentation, then most likely you will enjoy this volume.

The book is basically a good story about the development of the female form, the aesthetic aspects of it, and the role of its different regions in sexual signaling and the history of why women's bodies have been such an object of attention in all cultures.

Although I haven't mentioned this specifically, there is also good scientific content such as what female attributes correlate to health and fertility, why symmetry is important and why breasts developed into larger structures when early humans started walking upright. The book even points out minor, but interesting differences between males and females such as the index finger being the second longest finger in 45% of females. This same chapter on the hand also goes on to discuss the origin of the custom of the ring finger used in the marriage ceremony.

I put a lot of detail in here to give readers a feel for the type of content and basic approach of the book. There is nothing in here that is condescending to women in my opinion. It is a celebration of the female form through the eyes of a zoologist who is also an artist and fan of cultural history.

I recommend this book highly, although it is not as good as some of his others such as the Naked Ape. Nonetheless, it's quite good and well worth reading.

Detailed look at the most amazing creature on earth

Desmond Morris, a zoologist, turns his analytic skills to that most remarkable of life forms, the human female. He describes this beautiful being, point by point, with clear-eyed affection. From the hair down to the feet, Morris contrasts woman's anatomy to man's, and also to the corresponding features of our cousins among the apes. He carries out these comparisons without showing preference to the male or female phenotype - or maybe just a bit of preference in her favor.

Physical features go with social effects in many cases, sometimes with multiple, contradictory effects. I found Morris's sociological statements a bit less well-founded than the plain observations of physical fact, but interesting none the less. Throughout the book, I couldn't help note how he described so many features as mating-related signals. Sex signalling is certainly important to the human animal, but I wonder whether he sometimes forced sexual meaning onto development differences that are genuinely incidental.

A few items left me disappointed, such as Morris's descriptions of the four basic tastes - ignoring the recent addition of umame to that list. I had to wonder about a few other points as well, like the assertion that the term "hen party" derives from the mideastern get-togethers in which women apply henna skin decoration for special occasions.

On the whole, though, it's an enjoyable and frank look at the most wonderful creature in existence: woman.

Oh Danny Boy

I have been a fan of Rhys Bowen’s book for a couple of years. I first discovered her Royal Spyness series, but I also enjoy her Molly Murphy mysteries. I have read all of the Royal Spyness books and most of the more recently published Molly Murphy mysteries, so now I am going back and reading more some of the earlier Molly Murphy books.

Oh Danny Boy picks up several weeks after the events of the previous book, In Like Flynn. Molly is trying to return to her normal life, but she has not had much success in finding cases for her fledgling detective business. She is also busy ignoring the letters from Captain Daniel Sullivan of the New York Police; he was a bit of a cad in the last book.

Molly learns that Daniel has been attempting to contact her because he has been arrested on charges of fraud and collaborating with a gang. Daniel insists that he is innocent, and that Molly is the only person that can help him because the force has turned against him. As Molly probes into the events that led up to the arrest, she begins to wonder if the perpetrator needed to silence Daniel. Could there be a connection between Daniel’s predicament and a killer who is targeting prostitutes.

This was quite the thrilling mystery. Molly has a tendency to find herself in peril when she gets close to solving a case, but this felt extra perilous. Molly’s friends Sid and Gus played a smaller role in this book than some of the previous entries, but I was amused by their attempts at amateur sleuthing. I also enjoyed seeing Molly team up with a partner, whose insight into criminology helps Molly be a more professional detective.

I would recommend Oh Danny Boy. Bowen includes enough background information at the beginning of each of the Molly Murphy books for them to function as standalones, but there is something satisfying about reading the series in order. I am looking forward to reading more of the Molly Murphy mysteries in the future, as well as anything else that Rhys Bowen can come up with!

Outstanding Fifth Entry

Molly Murphy is frustrated with her life in New York City. Being a detective isn't going well and she is having a hard time paying the bills. Plus, after her last encounter with police captain Daniel Sullivan, she wants nothing more to do with him. She's seriously considering moving out west and becoming a schoolteacher, much to her friends' dismay.

Then she finds out rather dramatically that Daniel has been arrested and is being held in the notorious Tombs prison. He's been accused of accepting a bribe, and the new police commissioner just happened to be on the scene to witness it. Of course, the charge is laughable. Daniel is one of the few people on the police force who would never accept a bribe. With most of the force turned against him, his only hope of proving his innocence is Molly. She reluctantly takes the case.

After several false starts, Molly begins to suspect that it might be related to one of two cases he was working at the time. The first involves a doped horse at the racetrack on Coney Island. The second is far more dangerous and involves a serial killer murdering prostitutes in the East Side. Either case is sure to put Molly in grave danger. Will she find the proof she needs? Will she live to free Daniel?

As if this weren't enough, Molly is having some health problems. And Daniel's ex-fiancee shows up requesting a favor from Molly. What's Arabella up to?

My biggest frustration with these books has been the fact that Molly sometimes seems to stumble on the answer with little more then luck. I couldn't help but laugh as Molly herself discusses this fact several times over the course of the book.

This is easily the best entry in the series. Several storylines weave together to form a logical conclusion. I only pieced everything together a couple pages before Molly did, and she did an excellent job of piecing things together herself. Even friends Sid and Gus get into the act. As always these neighbors provide some wonderful comic and tender moments. They continue to show their love for Molly, and it easily endears them to the reader.

The other characters in the novel are well drawn as well. New characters like Gentlemen Jack and Sabella Goodwin not only provide the needed story points, but also help recreate Molly's world. The scenes with the Arabella are especially good; I wouldn't mind seeing her character again.

The city itself plays a large roll in the story. Rhys Bowen brings the New York City of 1902 to vivid life. The sights, sounds, and smells made me feel like I was in the muggy summer weather right along side Molly.

This series has only gotten stronger with each entry. Don't hesitate to pick up this great book to be transported to another time and place.

I am hooked on this series! I learn something about life as a women at the turn of the century and have a plausible mystery to puzzle. So far the plot and setting of each of the four books that I have read in the series have been amazingly different! I have found them to be very compelling.

An Amazing Tarot Deck

I bought this tarot deck 6 months ago and I am still in love.

I only bought my first tarot deck about a year ago and have been diligently studying the cards since then, and although I've only got one other deck besides the DruidCraft, I can honestly say it's my favorite! :)

This deck is simply amazing. It's alive and it speaks and it tells you a story with every card. When looking through this deck I can take each card and imagine it as a still from a movie. I can create an entire back story and future for the people in these cards, all with just one snap-shot. The symbolism is deep - you could spend hours looking over one card and probably not catch everything it has to offer.

I've had amazing success with this deck. With my first deck, I would often get spreads I couldn't quite decipher, or were a little off. With this deck I've NEVER once had a reading that I couldn't understand or put together - and I've done dozens. I feel like this deck is a close friend and as such, it never lies to me. It's honest and loyal and true.

I was surprised at how large the cards are (even after reading these reviews) but I actually LOVE it. The artwork is so glorious, I would never want them to be smaller. I just shuffle them on their sides and it's all good.

Additionally - I'm neither Wiccan or a Druid, but I love this deck all the same. I identify as Pagan, but have no further labels than that. I think anyone should be able to find these cards useful and fulfilling, no matter your faith. The rich symbolism and deeply touching artistry will touch any soul, I think.

Overall, I love this deck. It's amazing and lovely and gorgeous and I wouldn't have it any other way!

UPDATE: Over a year later now and even after buying several more decks, this is still my favorite and the one I use the most. It is so easy to read with and the pictures truly do speak a thousand words. I'm still not concerned about the card size and shuffling aspect as so many of the other reviewers seem bothered by - that is one thing I really love about this deck!

My Favorite Deck

I decided to buy a new set from Amazon for personal reasons and love the new deck just as much as my old one. The artwork is stunning and the listing is for the book and deck, with a box to keep them in. I don't use the box to store my cards, but it's certainly suiting.

I hope you enjoy the video -- I created it to show the sheer quality of artwork in the deck and to clear any confusion about what is in the listing.

One of my absolute all-time favorite decks (and I own > 150 tarot/oracle decks). Beautiful, clear messages, stood the test of time, a classic and important deck, and it reads extremely well for both personal or professional readings. The cards are larger than a standard RWS deck, but I love that as it's still able to be shuffled easily, but shows enough of the image that you don't have to squint your eyes. 5 stars plus!

On Nov. 28, 1858, a ship called the Wanderer slipped silently into a coastal channel and unloaded a cargo of over 400 African slaves onto Jekyll Island, Georgia, fifty years after the African slave trade had been made illegal. It was the last ship ever to bring a cargo of African slaves to American soil.

The Wanderer began life as a luxury racing yacht, but within a year was secretly converted into a slave ship, and--using the pennant of the New York Yacht Club as a diversion--sailed off to Africa. More than a slaving venture, her journey defied the federal government and hurried the nation's descent into civil war. The New York Times first reported the story as a hoax; as groups of Africans began to appear in the small towns surrounding Savannah, however, the story of the Wanderer began to leak out, igniting a fire of protest and debate that made headlines throughout the nation and across the Atlantic.

The slave trade became illegal in the U.S. in 1808, but for half a century after that, a black market in chattel slavery thrived. In his first book, former Newsweek correspondent Calonius tells the fascinating, heartbreaking story of the last slave ship to dock on these shores, in 1858, the Wanderer. Originally built as a sugar baron's racing yacht, it was outfitted, as the New York Times reported, for "comfort and luxury." But a trio of greedy proslavery radicals, known as "fire-eaters," transformed her from plaything to slaver: deck planks and inner framing were removed and iron tanks inserted. Then the ship headed to Africa, and eventually returned to Georgia's Jekyll Island with its human cargo. (En route, 80 Africans died.) A Forgotten Step Toward the Civil War

Though it is obvious to us that slavery is unfair and immoral, it was, of course, not obvious to those who had practiced it as a tradition. Changing away from slavery in America was not done all at once, but involved various steps away from the practice. One of these steps was that in 1820 the federal government made illegal the importation of slaves from Africa. Slavery continued, but only from the stock already present (and exports of slaves continued to other places, notably to Cuba). But why should Southern slave owners pay any attention to federal rules? Indeed, as animosity towards the North grew, the prospect of flouting the law had attractions of rebellion as well as financial gain. There were successful but illegal imports, and the last one known was in 1858, on the ship the _Wanderer_. It is an almost forgotten episode, but Erik Calonius, a journalist, has brought back its history in _The Wanderer: The Last American Slave Ship and the Conspiracy that Set Its Sails_ (St. Martin's Press). It is an important story, and Calonius has told it vividly, casting light on the slave economy, relations with Britain, and the personalities of the radicals that took the South into war.

As the South's economy flagged, some were eager to improve it by resuming the importation of slaves from Africa. Many were "fire-eaters", the name for extremists who not only hated Yankee domination, but fired by horrific images of the anarchy and rape that would inevitably occur after emancipation of slaves, urged that the South boost its pride and maintain its customs, at least partially by celebrating its traditions of slavery. One of their number was Charles Lamar, a wealthy and well-connected Savannah businessman who openly declared his defiance of the Constitution and his intention to import slaves. His unsuccessful attempts to do so led him to become a partner with William C. Corrie, a like-minded South Carolinian, who arranged to buy the _Wanderer_, a swift 114 foot pleasure boat, and thereby gain entry into the prestigious New York Yacht Club. It was covertly fitted to hold hundreds of slaves and taken to Africa, where the captain entertained the officers of British Navy ships which were supposed to be keeping the slave trade down, before taking on his cargo and evading them. Aboard were 487 slaves, packed with the heartless minimum of space allotted to each. Eighty of the slaves died, and the rest made it to Jekyll Island, Georgia, for further profitable dispersion.

Charles Lamar was used to getting his way by whatever means. He predicted that he could bring the slaves in and suffer no legal consequences, and he was right. Not only were local officials sympathetic to his cause, Lamar used kidnapping, tampering with evidence, and intimidation of witnesses so that neither he nor anyone else in the case was found guilty of the importation. Lamar thought the success of the endeavor was a blow against the union, and he and his fellow fire-eaters were delighted at the prospect of Lincoln being elected president. Lamar said, "We shall have disunion, certain, if Lincoln is elected. I hope Lincoln is elected - I _want dissolution_ - and have, I think, contributed more than any man South for it." Indeed, he and his fellow fire-eaters became pamphleteers and crusaders to the many Southern farmers and merchants who were not slave-holders and who supported the Union. They brandished the scary image of freed slaves plundering the South, and so, shortly after the _Wanderer_'s successful voyage, secession had far more popular support. Calonius cites this as an example of radicals overwhelming the will of a weak, unfocused majority, while restraining himself from drawing contemporary examples. But having brought on the conflagration, the fire-eaters faded; none ascended to power in the Confederacy or in the reconstructed South. This is a troubling episode of American history, no less so for the revelations of how both North and South supported the slave trade in different ways. The lost history of the _Wanderer_ is recalled with exciting storytelling here, with all its implications for North and South and the war this particular slaving voyage helped to start.

Excellent insight into the causes of the Civil War

Let me begin by saying that this is not a book that I would normally have any interest in reading. As a general rule, the topic of slavery is of almost no interest to me, and I tend to avoid the subject due to lack of interest. However, this particular book sounded like it might be interesting, so I decided to read it.

Erik Calonius is a career journalist who has had some plum assignments in his journalistic career. The Wanderer is his first book, and he should be very proud of it. The topic got his interest on a visit to Jekyll Island, outside Savannah, Georgia, when he saw an exhibit to the Wanderer. Intrigued, he started looking into it, and decided to tackle a modern telling of the story.

The slave trade was made illegal in the United States in 1820. However, some of the Southern firebrands who were pushing for secession also strongly favored reinstating the slave trade. Charles Lamar, a relative of L.Q.C. Lamar and of the second president of the Texas Republic, led the conspiracy. Lamar and his co-conspirators purchased the Wanderer, a magnificent yacht, and took her to Africa to bring back a load of slaves in 1858. His crew managed to evade the British and American naval vessels patrolling the coast of Africa and safely made it back to the United States.

Even though their purpose was a very poorly kept secret, Lamar and his co-conspirators managed to evade justice through a combination of corruption and bullying. They made witnesses disappear, tampered with evidence, and made it impossible for the government to convict them of piracy (the crime of importing slaves was designated an act of piracy, and carried the death penalty). In three separate trials in 1859, Lamar and his co-conspirators were all acquitted and escaped justice, in spite of the best efforts of the Buchanan administration to convict and execute them.

There was poetic justice: Lamar was killed in action during the Civil War, and the Wanderer, which was seized and sold by the government, ended up in Union service during the war.

The book is well-researched and very well-written, which I would expect of a senior journalist of Mr. Calonius' credentials. He has brought a topic which would normally not interest me to life with an engaging writing style that almost reads like a novel. The book does have one of my pet peeves: instead of providing specific end note references, they're lumped together at the end by page, which drives me crazy. If one were interested in further research, or reading the primary sources for oneself, this style of footnoting makes it virtually impossible to do so. I absolutely despise that footnoting style. I suspect that was the publisher's call-and not Mr. Calonius'-so I can't necessarily fault him for it.

What I liked best about this book was how it so accurately and amply used the microcosm of this single incident to demonstrate how the agenda of the fire eaters directly caused the Civil War, and how they paid the ultimate price for their calumny. It also demonstrates how the inertia and passivity of the Buchanan administration allowed events to come to a crisis situation. The inactivity of the administration permitted a few fire breathers to flaunt the law for their own purposes, and their actions in doing so directly triggered the Civil War. Ironically, the prosecution of Lamar and his co-conspirators was left in the hands of Buchanan's attorney general, Thomas Howell Cobb of Georgia, who later became a Confederate general.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and can highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the causes of the Civil War.

The Wanderer Hits Home

In the book The Wanderer: The Last American Slave Ship and the Conspiracy That Set Its Sails, one is first given a fine portrait of the genteel life of some of the South's more prosperous families. But that picture becomes clouded when business man Charles Lamar of Savannah, Georgia decides to import African slaves long after the trade has been made illegal in the fledgling United States. What ensues are lives turned upside down, deals gone awry, travesties of justice and the underpinnings of secession on the eve of the Civil War.

Erik Calonius has done his homework, quoting from articles from papers on both sides of the Mason Dixon line, as well as providing references to source documents regarding the ship building business of that time, agreements between the United States and Great Britain to patrol the high seas for human contraband and myriad other accounts of the politics of the day. This story has so many twists and turns that no writer of historical fiction could have bested it. But the sad truth is that it is not fiction. In fact this episode has probably not been presented in the average high school history class. I would hope that producers for the History or Discovery channels would bring it out as a documentary film in order to allow access to it in the popular media.

One side effect to reading this book is that I was taken to look back in my own genealogy when I found that one of the key players shared my surname. To my surprise, for better or for worse, I found that I indeed share ancestry with that individual.

A pleasant and heartwarming epilogue does await in the end when one finds oneself asking throughout the book, "Whatever happened to the Africans that were brought in illegally?" But don't skip to the end - you'll want to absorb every detail of this rich story, replete with colorful personalities, action and suspense. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Leepson notes that "no country in the world can match the intensity of the American citizenry's attachment to the... Stars and Stripes." He goes on to chart the evolution of the flag and Americans' relationship with it in its detail-packed history. Despite the famous image in George Washington Crossing the Delaware, Leepson (Saving Monticello) says, the general's boat did not display the Stars and Stripes; the Continental Congress hadn't yet determined what the American flag would be. And "flagmania," as a 19th-century newspaper termed it, began only with the start of the Civil War. Embraced by the Ku Klux Klan, burned by Vietnam War protestors, the Stars and Stripes was again embraced in the wake of 9/11 as a ubiquitous symbol of American solidarity. Comprehensive, dispassionate chronicle of the potent banner that stirs up passions of every stripe.

Leepson (Saving Monticello, 2001) compiles the curious history of Old Glory and the special veneration it often evokes. Few readers will be shocked by his revelation that the legend of Betsy Ross and her little shop may not be entirely factual. We're reminded that in early American history the flag was used principally as a military or naval ensign and rarely flown by individual citizens. It is within living memory that Flag Day, the Flag Code, the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance received official recognition. After the strife of the Civil War, the Confederate Stars and Bars battle flag became part of history, along with the yarn about old Barbara Frietschie, and in efforts to display national unity the Starts and Stripes appeared all over, becoming a part of everyday commercial and political battles. A Crisp Salute

Flag: An American Biography (New York: St. Martin's Press, 2005)

In his latest work of popular historiography, Marc Leepson - author of Saving Monticello - takes on the daunting challenges of writing a concise, comprehensive and objective "biography" of the flag of the Untied States of America. His special attention is directed to the symbolic value which the flag has held for Americans since it was first authorized by Congress on 14 June 1777.

In terms of concision, comprehensiveness and objectivity, Mr. Leepson has done remarkably well and has produced a readable, entertaining volume which contains within its 266 pages a small ocean of educational information about the American flag. With a view specifically towards objectivity, the author does not air-brush from his narrative incidents which show lovers of the American flag in a less than favorable light. The hanging of William Mumford (1862) or of Paul Prager (1918) for flag desecration would not have made it into a less well-balanced book.

Mr. Leepson, a Vietnam War veteran, also exhibits considerable empathy with the anti-war movement of those days, going so far as to include a John Prine lyric as one of the book's two epigraphs: "Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore". He is aware, too, of the jingoism and commercialism - crass or otherwise - which have frequently attended the American flag and duly records their place in the "life" of the flag. Flag, it might be noted, is, in its own quiet way, another all-American commercial product, exploiting the enduringly popular, quintessential symbol of the USA.

Mr. Leepson is aware that he is an American writing for Americans about an American icon, but he maintains, for the most part, a third-person approach to his material. He is a journalist and an historian, a recorder of fact and a debunker of myth - not a cheerleader. He writes, almost always, about "the flag" not "our flag". He is conscious that his book might, perhaps, be read by non-Americans. The pride of place, however, the first of the book's two epigraphs, belongs to Harriet Ward Beecher. Its highly charged rhetoric, from 1861, is the one that resonates more strongly with the author: "our flag carries American ideas, American history and American feelings. It is not a painted rag. It is a whole national history. It is the Constitution. It is the Government. It is the emblem of the sovereignty of the people. It is the NATION."

Mr. Leepson's hope in writing this book was, he says, "to throw an informing light on what has become an object of veneration for so many Americans and the very visible symbol of this amazing nation". He diligently records the various changes made to the actual flag over the years to accommodate the accession of new states into the union. He also diligently records the changing meanings attached to the flag over the years. One detects, however, an understated sense of awe beneath the entire narrative.

Mr. Leepson has chosen for the end-papers of his book an 18-point diagram which illustrates how to fold the flag into a triangle, as is done at U.S. military funerals today. This diagram is an analogue to the 18 chapters into which Mr. Leepson has folded the story of the flag's "life" to date. The diagram is also a testament to his sense of propriety and reverence. One imagines that he has attended a number of U.S. military funerals and seen "Old Glory" folded, tight as swallowed tears.

His excellent, compact volume of U.S. vexillogical lore strongly suggests that for Mr. Leepson, the "Stars and Stripes", the "Star-Spangled Banner" is, primarily, the Battle Flag of the Republic. His book's one word title is sharp as a surname at roll-call or a summons to attention. The book itself is a crisp salute to that demanding national emblem.

"Flag" - a review

"Flag" is the kind of book serious students of American history will love. Marc Leepson has written an account of our nation's most enduring symbol that includes all the scholarly elements but still brings a popular history to those of us that wouldn't know a monograph from a monorail. The book begins with the initial uses of flags in our nation's history through the controversey surrounding its creation up through its modern day use as a statement of patriotism and politics. The book hits all the highlights and some of the abuses without being overly pedantic or preachy. Leepson has accomplished a rare feat - bringing scholarship to the masses and doing so in a delightfully entertaining way. It is exactly the kind of history that should be read by everyone who has an interest in our nation's history - and that should be all of us.
