This is but the first of a series of uncanny incidentsâ€"a corpse in a cubicle no one appears to notice, a recycling bin that seems to have no bottomâ€"that dog Paul at TxDoGS. The romance he strikes up with Callie, the appealingly goofy company "mail girl," provides the novel's emotional center. Didn't quite live up to the hype

After reading a number of reviews that described this book as hilarious, incisive satire and just generally excellent, I began reading it with high hopes. I wouldn't say that I was completely disappointed (I did give it the benefit of the doubt and assign it 3 stars rather than 2), but I did feel that Hynes didn't realize the full potential of his clever premise.

Down-on-his-luck academic Paul Trilby, through a series of disastrous infidelities, finds himself living in a seedy apartment complex, driving a decrepit Dodge Colt, and working as a temporary typist for the Texas Department of General Services, or TxDoGS. His coworkers, whom he loathes, include a conniving former prom queen, a bombastic ex-military man, a snivelingly devout Christian, and an oafish frat boy type. But he finds himself intrigued by the mail girl, Callie, and begins a tentative romance with her despite his past failures. As the relationship heats up, things at TxDoGS become increasingly bizarre. Whispers about what goes on in the building at night, and how certain coworkers get their work done without seeming to actually do any work, combined with glimpses of seemingly surreal goings on in the ceiling panels of the office put Paul on edge even as he gets promoted at work and grows closer to Callie.

Sounds like a pretty intriguing premise, right? I felt the same way through the first half of the book. Unfortunately, the progression from Paul catching fleeting glimpses of things he can't believe to his witnessing blatantly supernatural phenomena is handled incredibly poorly. Even when repeatedly and directly confronted with evidence of what's going on, Paul unconvincingly keeps telling himself he's only dreaming, and goes on as though nothing out of the ordinary is happening. This despite the fact that he openly acknowledges that he's haunted by the ghost of his ex-girlfriend's cat, which he drowned in a bathtub as revenge for the cat exposing his infidelity. So he's already accepted one supernatural event, but rejects the possibility of others. Also, the TxDoGS building security guard even asks him if he's witnessed anything strange going on in the building, and still Paul clings to his "It's all a dream" theory. While I'm often frustrated by characters in books and movies who react to the supernatural without freaking out at all, Paul's state of denial was equally absurd, and frustrated me to the point that I wanted to throttle him.

Finally, once Paul acknowledges what's going on, the book comes to a climax with a fairly predictable but entertaining final confrontation, and a satisfying denouement with an absolutely perfect final line. This definitely saved the book from a negative review from me, but couldn't fully make up for the frustration of the book's middle third.

Also, as another reviewer mentioned, Hynes's writing style really conjures up a mental movie in your mind, moreso than some authors, and, in fact, I think Kings of Infinite Space would make a better movie than a book, so if that ever happens, check it out!

Humor meets the macabre.

Think Mike Judge's "Office Space" as being re-written by Stephen King, paying homage to "Night of the Living Dead." Throw in some H.G. Wells (the author frequently alludes to "The Island of Dr. Moreau," and the relationship between the Eloi and Mordocks in the "Time Machine") and add some steamy love scenes, and you can get an approximation of James Hyne's off-the-wall "Kings of a Infinite Space."

Paul Trilby, a failed professor with a troubling past (especially with women and a cat named Charlotte) finds himself as a temp at the Texas Department of General Services, with some of the wackiest co-workers you will ever meet. Along the way, he finds a fiery lover in Callie, the mail room girl. Almost right from the start, Paul notices that things are not quite what they seem. Paul attempts to distance himself from his unsettling surroundings, but gets increasingly drawn into it, especially by the bogus "Colonel" who, at one point, forces Paul to paticipate in a surrealistic Karaoke contest.

I felt that the author's frequent use of allegory was sometimes heavy handed, and the last portion of the book seemed too far over the top, as if Hynes were trying to convert a generally humorous novel into horror. However, Hynes is a fine writer who has created something truly unique (although Stephen King and Clive Barker, to name two, could probably have written a similar book). Therefore, I recommend "Kings of the Infinite Space," and suggest you hold on tightly for the ride.

James Stuart Bell is the owner of Whitestone Communications, a literary development agency. He was Director of Religious Publishing at Doubleday. He has authored and compiled more than forty books, including the bestselling Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible.

Chapter One

Four Kids and a War(drobe)

Into the Twilight Zone

In 1959&mdash64 (aaaaaaaaages ago), a weekly half-hour TV show called The Twilight Zone, created by an innovative (an adjective meaning capable of making something new) man named Rod Serling, was in production. (Reruns are shown on the SciFi channel and are on DVD.) Wondering what that`s got to do with LWW? Plenty. Sit tight and you`ll find out.

In each Twilight Zone episode, various characters would find themselves in strange worlds or in situations extremely different from the reality they were used to (unless they were used to being chased by maniacal talking dolls or zombielike neighbors). Whenever they discovered something out of the ordinary, the narrator of the show, Rod Serling, would suddenly pop up and announce that the character had crossed over into the twilight zone. (This was another strange occurrence. After all, when was the last time a narrator popped up in your living room and began discussing your life?) Then the eerie theme music would play (Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo).

If you`ve read LWW, you know that a girl named Lucy Pevensie was the first person in her family to cross over into a twilight zone known as Narnia. (Check out All About Lucy at the end of the chapter.) How did she get there? Through a wardrobe. (Give yourself minus 50 points if you said an airplane or any other form of transportation.)

Imagine opening your closet door and discovering a completely different world beyond your clothes. (Have you checked what`s beyond your closet lately? Go on. Give it a try. We dare you.)

If you`re back from checking out your closet, let`s get back to the fictional Lucy. We first meet Lucy and her siblings Peter, Susan, and Edmund as they arrive at the country home of Professor Kirke (a man curiously like C. S. Lewis) during World War II, having traveled all the way from London.

Lucy, Peter, Susan, and Edmund didn`t have much choice about living with the Professor. They had to live there. Imagine having to live with total strangers&mdash-strangers who were told they had to take you in. How would you feel? This is the situation Lucy and her siblings found themselves in. Little did they know that the Professor`s home would be the key to some of the greatest adventures of their lives! It all began when they decided to explore the many rooms of the Professor`s country house. (For exploration ideas or tips on what to do for a rainy day, see the games at the end of the chapter.) That`s when Lucy discovered the wardrobe in a spare room. (Wondering what a wardrobe is? Look for And Now, a Word About Wardrobes later in the chapter. No need to thank us.)

Operation Evacuation

Like the Pevensies, many kinds in real life (about 2 million) were sent out of London before and after German forces bombed the city during World War II. This attack was known as the Blitz and was part of a planned invasion of Britain by Nazi forces (Operation Sea Lion). Pretty soon, there was a full-scale air battle called the Battle of Britain.

The bombing of London began in 1940 and continued through 1941. Imagine how scared the people of London were during that time. (If you happened to live in New York during the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, you have some idea of how scary and horrible a time it was.)

With the constant threat of air raids (attacks by enemy aircrafts), many parents knew that their kids wouldn`t be safe in the city. So, they sent them away by train to live with families in the country. If you lived in London during this time, your mom or dad might have done the same thing.

The evacuations began in September 1939, just as the German forces invaded Poland. Signs were posted all over London, alerting people as to when and where the evacuations would take place.

Many kids were evacuated through their schools. Most traveled light, bringing only a gas mask, a toothbrush, and ID card, and a change of underwear. (Since the gas masks were red and blue, they were called Mickey Mouse masks. Wanna guess why?)

After arriving at a town or village station, the kids would be divided among the families in the area, who were under orders to provide homes for them. (When a person is under orders to report to a place, you would say that he or she is billeted to that location. Amaze your friends with your keen vocabulary.)

His Home Was Their Home

Even C. S. Lewis had wartime guests, probably starting in September 1939.1 His home had enough room for four kids. A group of girls from London stayed at his country home on the outskirts of Oxford. They didn`t all arrive at once. They were sent to his home in stages. Some of the girls stayed for more than a year.

While two of the girls (Patricia Boshell and Marie Bose) arrived, Lewis was busy in the garden. Since he wore dirty gardening clothes, one of them assumed he was the gardener! At least he could laugh about it.

At this point, Lewis taught at Oxford University and shared a home (the Kilns) with his brother, Warren, and Janie and Maureen Moore&mdash-the mother and sister of his friend Paddy, who had been killed during World War I (more on that in chapter 16). Mrs. Moore (whose nickname was Minto, but not like Mentos the mints) lived there until she was placed in a nursing home in 1950.

Because of the air raids (or threat of them), blackouts took place, even in the country. Everyone was told to hang black fabric against the windows each night. With everything dark, Nazi bombers would have a harder time finding targets.

Keep in mind that food, gas, clothes, and coal were rationed then. Officials feared that food supplied would run out, so everyone was allotted a certain amount of food (a ration). Ration books were handed out so that everyone could keep track of food items like eggs, butter, and sugar. Even kids had ration books. Perhaps the Pevensies brought theirs to the Professor`s house. C. S. Lewis`s boarders would have each had one. (Try to imagine what rationing would be like now. How would you feel if a limit was placed on the amount of food you could eat each week?

At this point in his life, Lewis had little experience with kids. Although he thought his guests were nice and all (as he told his brother in a letter), their presence was a challenge for a busy professor, especially since they kept asking for advice on what to do.2 (Maybe that`s why he made the Pevensies able to entertain themselves at the Professor`s house. They`re like you in that regard, right?) Still, he liked having them around.

His wartime boarders gave him good material for a story. At first, he thought about writing a story about four kids (Rose, Peter, Martin, and Ann) who were sent to the home of an old professor. (Sounds familiar.) But the land of Narnia you know and love was still to be developed. (More on that in chapter 5b. You can wait that long, right? Unless you want to skip ahead and read it right now. We won`t tell.)

But it all started with a wardrobe.

And Now, a Word About Wardrobes

Some rooms in old houses like Professor Kirke`s didn`t have closets. Wardrobes&mdash-big, wooden cabinets really&mdash-were used for storing clothes.

C. S. Lewis may have been inspired to write about a wardrobe by one that his grandfather made (pictured below), which occupied a space in his childhood home, Little Lea, back in Belfast. The wardrobe (Lucy Pevensie not included) currently resides at Marion E. Wade Center in Wheaton, Illinois.

Another source of inspiration for LWW came from one of the girls evacuated from London who asked Lewis what was in an old wardrobe. Could she explore it? Her question undoubtedly stayed in Lewis`s mind (kind of like a song that just won`t leave your head).

In Chapter 1 of LWW, Lucy did just what Lewis`s wartime boarder did&mdash-she explored a wardrobe. There she discovered more than just a bunch of old fur coats and other clothes. Like Dorothy in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, she found a new world to explore&mdash-a world quite different from the one she just left. This was Narnia.

The first creature she met in Narnia was a faun: Mr. Tumnus. (You don`t see fauns every day... or ever!) Meeting Mr. Tumnus sets up the conflict (the central problem) of the story. In chapter 2 of this book, you`ll read more about fauns and handkerchiefs than you probably ever thought you would.

Lucy and C. S. Lewis

If you read the letter on the dedication page of LWW, you already know that there was a girl named Lucy in C. S. Lewis`s life. But did you know that she was the daughter of Owen Barfield, a friend from his days as a student at Oxford University? Barfield was an author, philosopher, and a member of the Inklings writers` group to which C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien (author of The Lord of the Rings) belonged. And no, the real Lucy didn`t discover Narnia, except through the pages of C. S. Lewis`s book.

Early Inspirations

Another girl went through a wardrobe in a spare room and found herself in a strange place. Her name was Amabel (that`s right&mdash-Amabel, not Anabel or Annabelle) and she`s the main character in The Aunt and Amabel, one of the short stories in The Magic World by E. Nesbit (published in 1912). (For more on E. Nesbit, see chapter 5c.)

A great resource for kids

If you read (and loved) THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, but found yourself confused about some of the terms, creatures, or metaphors in the book, this book offers helpful information. For example, perhaps you've wondered what Turkish delight is, why Lucy and Susan were called "daughters of Eve," or the difference between a sledge and a sleigh. Beyond that, it is an informative look at C. S. Lewis--his childhood, faith, wartime experiences, and the authors who influenced him (E. Nesbitt, Kenneth Grahame, Beatrix Potter--to name a few). The book contains a logic puzzle, quizzes ("Which Pevensie Are You Most Like?"; a quiz on beavers, "Chillin' Like a Villain Quiz") rainy-day games, Narnia-theme party ideas, and book study questions for reading groups. Most of all, the engaging, somewhat irreverent tone will keep you turning pages. And the picture of the cat dressed as Aslan is hilarious!

So funny you will laugh out loud

Rarely do books make me chuckle out loud. If you live in the south, or appreciate the differences that makes southern culture unique, you will enjoy this book. Celia Rivenbark divides the book into chapters which discusses the trials and tribulations of life. She has a humorous outlook on life.

The book starts out nicely with describing a trip to Disneyland, and what a bad parent you are if you do not take your child there, buckling under the pressure of taking your child there, and the "fun" that will only happen under the pressure of having fun. Note: Disneyland isn't always fun for everyone.

I love her look on parenting, and the shock and horror of when your child must go from toddler clothes to little girl clothes. As the style of fashion goes from safe designs to where you are having to dress your six year old going on seventeen. It is a shock to the system when you are trying to find clothes that do not make your child look like a street walker. In addition to Disneyland, dressing a six year old girl, she writes about taking a school class to the zoo, the rigors of volunteering for a Halloween festival, and volunteer opportunities that your six year old signed you up for.

This book is extremely enjoyable, and personally I would love to sit down with Celia Rivenbark and have coffee with her. Her book is a delightful look on living in the south, and how one navigates parenthood. I highly recommend this book to those who are wanting to seek out an amusing look into what it is like being a parent in the south.

How can you resist a title like that?

I mean, who hasn't thought that themselves? As soon as I heard of the title of this book, I knew I had to read it. So when I saw it on the new book shelf at the library I snatched it up. I read, I giggled, I made my partner listen to me read whole pages aloud and we both laughed uncontrollably.

Celia Rivenbark is like your fun sarcastic girlfriend who says things that make you snort milk out of your nose if she catches you at just the right moment. I am a non-heterosexual, childless, transplanted Northerner but I thoroughly enjoyed her thoughts on marriage, child rearing, and Southern living, as well as her unabashed enjoyment of junky TV (sister!) and contemplations of celebrity foibles ("Speaking of aliens, as I write this, Tom Cruise and Katie 'I'm With Crazy' Holmes are expecting a celebrity pod-baby. Yes! The seed has been successfully planted and now is growing and flourishing in the formerly Catholic womb of Ms. Katie.").

Very funny stuff, and a nice light, quick read either all in one gulp like a pint of Haagen-Daz, or rationed out like the package of Oreos you are hiding from the kids. Consider it as a gift for the favorite slacker-mom in your life (as long as you are reasonably sure she ISN'T one of those dressing her 6-year-old like a skank, because that would hurt her feelings, bless her heart...)

Like curling up for delicious gossip fest with your best friend

In this laugh-out-loud collection of essays, Celia Rivenbark skewers the absurdities that we deal with on a regular basis. Kids, huzzzbands, celebrities, vanity - nothing is sacred. Perhaps what I enjoyed most about the book was the intimate, best friends tone Celia uses coupled with the most fabulous quips and turns of phrase - you can practically hear her delivering them. When you are reading the book, it feels like you're having a delicious gab fest with a dear friend. For example, in describing her daughter's overstuffed school bookbag "I tell you hons, sometimes I expect to pull a live squirrel monkey out of there". I couldn't help but laugh out loud at that comment because it is oh, so true with all the stuff kids bring home!

Clearly, this book has a target audience of southern moms in the 35-50 y.o. age group, but covers enough universal observations to make it enjoyable to a wider audience. Try it. You don't have to eat grits to enjoy it!

The PI is sinking back into alcoholic oblivion when an Irish Gypsy, Sweeper, approaches Jack for help in solving the murders of a number of young men in his clan. The Guards aren't interested, since, after all, "it's only tinkers... and everyone knows, they're always killing each other." The quintessential outsider himself, Jack empathizes with the roaming Gypsies and feels comfortable in their company. Enlisting the aid of Keegan, a burly cop friend from London, Jack sets about investigating the killings, while at the same time he struggles to keep his own personal demons under control. Bruen's spare, lean style reads like prose poetry. Indeed, beneath the surface of Jack's jaded, self-destructiveness is a romantic with a poet's sensibilities. An autodidact, Jack continually references his literary heroes, from Chester Himes to Thomas Merton. Taylor--also a bookworm and a pop-culture sponge--isn't just an antihero, he's an antidetective who spends far more time committing crimes against his liver than following leads. The supporting cast (including a character from The White Trilogy [BKL F 1 03]) moves the action forward while Taylor gets puking drunk, screws up his relationships, and goes days on end without getting to work. The payoff, for some readers, is Taylor's worldview. He may be a drunken shambles, but his wry humor, regret, and sense of impending mortality--often expressed in lines that are like aphorisms of the doomed--keep readers coming along. The most meh sequel you'll ever read

I haven't read much crime/mystery, but I really enjoyed the first novel, and I imagine others from other genres have as well. It seems to have pleased those who just want cheap thrills, and he is good at that, but this one was all style no substance. I was surprised by the lack of much leg work he did in the first book, but thought maybe the show had skewed me. In this one however, he does nothing but confront on guy. It's literally just about him sucking at everything, his friends doing the detective work, his friends doing the dirty work. This isn't harry potter where there's at least something he brings to the table at the end. He brings nothing ever to the table. If he gets better in the series, Ill never find out. Total hack job, down to the duplicated quote.

Reading Bruen is Addictive

The second novel in Bruen's series about the down-and-out Jack Taylor, ex-cop, sometime private detective, fulltime alcoholic, reading addict--with the new addition of coke to his arsenal-- practically starts where THE GUARDS left off without much of a break. It's almost as if you were reading a continuation of the previous novel. Taylor is hired this time to find the killers of a group of tinkers; his second assignment is to catch whoever is decapitating the swans in Galway.

Taylor's world view is as bleak as December weather. His friends Cathy and Jeff have a child born with Down's syndrome, an example of sorrow gone to seed. I would be over his constant bout with the bottle if he weren't so literate about it all. He's read everybody: Dylan Thomas, Anne Sexton, Robert Frost, Seamus Heaney, Harry Crews, Raymond Chandler. The list goes on and on. He says "my life and certainly my sanity had fled to reading through a thousand dark days." Taylor hates his mother, is not very successful in love and is often makes very bad judgments in his attempts to solve the tinker murders. He sometimes waxes eloquent, however, and you become besotted with him. A suit he got from Vincent de Paul wasn't purchased with him in mind. And his description of Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down" as the ultimate "alky anthem" is worth the price of the book.

The ending will blow you away!

Very helpful information

As the reviews say the book consists of looking at how we organize our life using 4 brains types. There is the Prioritizing type, the Maintaining type, the Innovating type, and Harmonizing type. Overall I found the book well written and enjoyed how the author looked at how each brain type functions overall. She talks about ways each brain type can: use a calendar more effectively, use storage space, deal with paperwork, organize your home and office space, and organize your environment. Also, at the end of each brain type chapter, she gives a nice bullet point summary of key points so that you don't have to go back and re-read in detail.

My only problem with the book was the testing method in helping to find your brain type. The test was 50 questions (too long) and many of the questions where things I had problems relating to. For example some questions asked:

You are reminded about going to the opera when:

1. Check your planner a day in advance

2. Notice post-its over the house

3. Friends shows up at door step

4. Your Palm Pilot's alarm goes off 15 before you are to leave

While Typing, you notice your dog is looking at you with those huge hungry eyes you:

1. Tell him you feed him at the same time

2. Your dog never looks hungry there food on the floor all the times

3. Throw him your half-eaten doughnut form breakfast this morning

4. Tell him to lie down and wait until you are done

You normally try to avoid conversations that:

1. Involve the future

2. That go into great detail

3. That deal with figures

4. That is too touch-feely

For me these questions (and some others) depend on situations. I may talk touch-feely at one time, and depending on the day or my mood, I might feed the dog now or wait. The test would have been more effective had it dealt with typical situations. My guess is she was trying to offer something different than the other books out there on organization that gives tests using every day situations, but her test did not work for me. Also, by her own admission, she says some of the test questions "seemed a little over the top" and what I found was because some of the questions were over the top, I scored in a different brain type category (Prioritizing style) when after reading the other brain types, I am clearly a Maintaining type.

My only suggestion would be is to take the test, but make sure you read the other types to see if they don't fit you better. The the book is arranged in a way that you can scan the other brain types easily. Overall the book is very good and offers good tips and info.

Useful and Practical Information, Fun to Read

I am very busy, so I do not have a lot of spare time to read. I liked how this book was concise and practical, and yet still fun to read. It is organized well so that I could quickly get the information I needed to help get myself organized, and then go back later and read about other types.

I especially liked the section which showed how people with other brain types viewed people with my type; it was uncanny!

I liked it enough to order two more copies for friends.

The only place to start

Like so many people, I have read plenty of organizing books. I try to implement the recommended systems, but, if I even get the system in place, I can't sustain an uncluttered environment.

In Lanna Nakone's book, I learned that traditional systems of organizing only work for people who are already natural organizers. Only by understanding the way your own brain works, can you begin to implement organizational systems that will last for you. Read this book first, then you can sift through other organizers' advice and select what will ultimately work for you.
