The latest in this annual series is a diverse collection of fiction and poetry. The usual suspects are here--Neil Gaiman, Bentley Little, Ramsey Campbell--and so are nongenre authors, such as Haruki Murakami, Karen Joy Fowler, and Kevin Brockmeier. The stories constitute an entertaining, eerie mixture of creepiness and suspense. In Gaiman's "Feeders and Eaters," a man runs into an old colleague, who tells him about his housemate, an old woman with odd dietary needs. Melissa Hardy's "Aquero" is the tale of a young woman's beatification; the narrative alternates between several different examinations of her buried body and the testimony of a nun who objects to the canonization. In Eric Schaller's creepy "The Assistant to Dr. Jacob," a policeman asks a man to recollect his childhood mentor, whose interest in rosebushes was not the innocent hobby the narrator recalls. Several of the poems included cleverly retell fairy tales, and, of course, the volume also reviews the year in horror and fantasy in all media. Kristine Huntley

strong anthology

As usual, this annual anthology serves up some of the best work, although this time around, the emphasi is more on orror than fantasy this year. The tales represent a wide panorama of the genres. Most of which are quite strong and a few are tremndous with one particular tale, "The Hunter's Wife," an incredible five star plus treat. Editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling also include their usual insightful analysis of the year. Especially interesting besides the obvious trend analysis that make for fascinating reading notably when compared to earlier editions of this tome is the recognition of comic books as a legitimate form of fantasy.
Overall this edition is a strong anthology that holds up against its illustrious history. Readers will enjoy savoring this collection over several weeks (this reviewer read 2-3 stories a night).

Very good

I've enjoyed the majority of the stories in this compilation. Granted, there have been a few that really didn't inspire much interest but others have stirred my interest in searching down that specific author's work to read more because I like the flow of words.

This is the first one I had gotten and as it interested me so much, I've gotten the most current edition to read.

It's been ten minutes on my Kindle and I still have not got to the first story. There is no table of contents you can click on and get to the stories and just when I think I am done with the authors foolishness more comes up. I will write more later when and if I actually get to read a story

Having spent a career closely watching the numbers, veteran Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg, who advised Bill Clinton in his 1992 victory, sees a nation entrenched into two opposing ideological camps, neither side getting much done. And so he presents solutions, of course to Democrats but also Republicans if they care to read the book, on how to break the gridlock and solidify power. Greenberg offers a history lesson, showing how for the last 50 years, neither party has had a solid grip on power and, as a result, lacked the mandate to lead. Instead, both fire up their base of supporters and scrap for small electoral groups in order to give them a tiny majority among national office holders. Armed with history and voluminous statistical data, Greenberg identifies the core constituencies of each party and assigns them catchy names in order to make his analysis more entertaining and easier to follow. The Republicans' base includes such groups as the "F-You Old Men," white blue-collar seniors with no college education, while over on the left side, the Democrats are anchored by groups like the "Secular Warriors," people who rarely attend church and don't own guns. Extensive polling took place in three communities that are battlegrounds on the electoral map and all three receive catchy nicknames as well: "Tampa Blue" (working class Florida), "The Heartland" (Iowa farm country), and "Eastside Tech" (the white-collar tech-heavy suburbs east of Seattle). After reading the pulse of these representative voters, Greenberg recommends the GOP offer up a second-generation Reagan campaign, emphasizing hope, independence, and industriousness. Pollster Greenberg (Middle Class Dreams), who was part of Bill Clinton's victorious "war room" team during the 1992 presidential campaign, is dissatisfied with the country's political split down the middle and has ideas for how to break the Democratic/Republican impasse. He considers the last, embattled presidential election "just the current moment in an era of political deadlock" stretching back to the Eisenhower administration, a half-century in which the two parties have traded power back and forth unable to form a lasting dynasty. The 2004 election, he says, promises to be just as competitive. Analyzing each party's potential, Greenberg breaks down their loyalists into identifiable factions, like "F-You Boys" (Deep Southern white male blue-collar workers who "think President George W. Bush is their guy") and "Super-Educated Women" (Democratic loyalists though their husbands, "Privileged Men," are Republicans), Then Greenberg closely examines three regional blocs that may be up for grabs: he calls them Tampa Blue, Seattle's Eastside Tech and Heartland Iowa. In the second half of the book, he imagines how party leaders might plan to keep or retake the White House. His analysis of the GOP's strategy to present Bush as the carefully scrubbed "Reagan's Son" seems dead-on. Understand Who Votes for Whom and Why

If you're a Democrat who has a hard time understanding why anyone would vote for the GOP, or a Republican who can't see why people vote for the Dems, this book will give you a glimpse into the other side's worldview. In fact, it will do better than that: it will show you how each party consists of loose coalitions of groups with radically different worldviews. The best thing about Greenberg's book is the clarity with which it outlines these constituencues and their priorities. You'll spend the next week after reading it watching political ads with a new interest, second-guessing who the ad is meant to appeal to and why.
Like many public affairs books, it has the look of a long essay that was fluffed up to book length on the request of the author's agent. But there is some very solid analysis of voting patterns here. Whatever happens in the next election, you can bet Greenberg's book will make it more intelligible.

You don't have to be a Clintonista to enjoy this one...

Everything the other reviewers have said about this book is true, and then some. It should appeal to anyone with enough curiosity to get beyond the standard boring "liberal vs. conservative" pap we get from what passes for analysis on TV. Although Greenberg is clearly on the Democrats' side, that's no reason for Republicans to ignore this book - it's full of interesting insights for both parties. I find myself wondering (March 2004) how all the groups Greenberg describes are reacting to the current campaign themes - outsourced jobs and gay marriage amendments. If you're planning to really get into the upcoming bloodbath, this book will make it a lot more interesting.

An Earnest and Interesting Book

Anyone who picks up a book on the current state of party politics in the U.S.A. is compelled to take note first of the author's political stance. Stanley B. Greenberg, author of THE TWO AMERICAS, was a pollster for Bill Clinton and Al Gore and a key member of Clinton's campaign team. He is married to a Democratic congresswoman from Connecticut.
The same full-disclosure mandate surely applies to reviewers of such books as well. OK, this reviewer is a registered Democrat, a senior citizen/retiree, middle-class, Catholic New Englander resident for many years in the Middle West.
Those preliminaries out of the way, perhaps we can get down to reviewing the book.
Greenberg starts with the obvious: the electorate is evenly divided between the two parties, a situation he regards as "ugly" and unhealthy. Each party sees the possibility of breaking the deadlock to its own advantage, but neither seems able to pull the trick off. Using the pollster's standard tools of interviews, focus groups and projections, he slices and dices both parties into interest groups according to age, education level, income, religious feelings and geographical distribution. His text is full of bar charts and "thermometers" that register the feelings of each sub-group on all sorts of questions. He traces the history of America's shifting political allegiances, in particular those of the past 50 years, a period when neither party was able to achieve any lasting dominance (or, to use his favorite word, "hegemony").
Seeking out middle ground between the parties, he devotes special attention to three typical geographical areas where neither party dominates --- the suburbs east of Seattle, the farm country of central Iowa and suburbs around Tampa. Then he lays out a potential victory strategy for each party, and concludes that whichever one takes advantage of his insights will have victory within its grasp.
It is in this last section that Greenberg's own bias is evident. His Republican victory strategy amounts largely to the GOP energizing its core loyalists and adding enough fringe voters to them to ensure a win. He convenes a fictional meeting of George W. Bush's campaign team at which Bush is largely a mute bystander, more interested in catching a baseball game on television. But for the Democrats, Greenberg lays out a detailed campaign platform designed to appeal to middle class and uncommitted voters whom he feels the party has lost in recent years. He believes the 2004 election will be decided fully as much on "cultural" issues (guns, religious feeling, education level, "family values") as on substantive issues like health care or foreign policy.
He has critical things to say about each party's strategy in recent elections: the Republicans have pushed an agenda (tax cuts, small government) in which most voters are simply not interested, the Democrats have given up on the middle class, where much of their strength should lie. Many voters, he finds, are alienated from the Republicans but aren't attracted to the Democratic alternative.
All of this is certainly provocative. What one makes of it will depend largely on whether one thinks pollsters are the infallible seers they advertise themselves as, or just educated estimators of the public mood. I suspect the strategists of both parties will comb through this book for usable tactics, without necessarily swallowing it whole.
There are a number of factors in play that Greenberg either ignores or mentions only in passing. He has little or nothing to say about the obvious public alienation from politics in general reflected in declining turnout, the impact of television on modern campaigns, the rampant weakening of party loyalty out there beyond Washington D.C., the baleful influence of partisanship-driven redistricting, the obvious financial advantage held by the Republicans, the possible impact of additional campaign finance reform on future campaigns, or such a wild-card issue as abortion. And of course he is handicapped by not knowing as he writes the identity of the Democratic nominee for 2004.
This is an earnest and interesting book, one that political junkies (like me) will devour like manna from heaven. Much of its data, however, could be invalidated overnight by some unforeseen event or sudden shift in the political winds. It's still a long time until election day, folks.

Hubris Revisited

Jamaica Me Dead, the latest of Zach Chasteen's adventures, grabs and holds the reader from the opening chapter. After completing this terrifc story, the reader might very well reflect that perhaps the Greeks were right when they claimed that there were no new stories, only new ways of telling them. If so, this is a brilliant retelling of the classic tale of loyalty, betrayal and greed.

As we can expect, Morris utilizes his well-known expertise with the Caribbean to realistically create the Jamaican setting. More specifically, a good bit of the action takes place at a swingers' resort, which adds the requisite spice.

Zach's compatriots play a primary role, the mysterious but unfailingly loyal Boggy, and Chasteen's improbable lover, Barbara Pickering. She and Zach's mutual commitment to each other is beautiful to share.

The story apparently revolves around Zach being called to assist his old friend Monk Devane with mysterious terrorism at the resort. We have some fascinating insights into the machinations of Jamaican politics, and a very insightful portrayal of how the "other half" of Jamaicans carve out a subsistence level existence.

In the end this is a story filled with intrigue, and the classic outcome of jealousy and greed. Ulitmately Chasteen learns who is genuinely his friend and who is not. This lesson is compellingly driven home, as we see a man with a perfect plan carry his plan to the brink of completion, only to be undone by his own greed. His arrogance causes him to want even more. As with the Greeks, hubris is his undoing. A brilliant retelling of an age old story. Don't miss it.

It's always a tough choice with historical fiction: risk bogging down the story with painstaking accuracy, or play fast and loose with the facts. Debut novelist Michod takes the latter tack in his fast-paced, sensational rush through the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, where the hunt is on for a serial killer who preys on young boys. Beginning with an immediate sensory whirl - wind whipping off Lake Michigan, bustling exhibition halls, excited crowds - this literate thriller pulls readers along pell-mell until the end. When young Billy Rockland, son of a prominent Chicago architect, wanders away from his parents, he's discovered by the ominous Skurlock, who whisks him into the fair's dark fringes. Meanwhile, the corpses of mutilated boys have the city in a panic. Add to the mix Potter Palmer, a prominent industrialist and friend of the grieving Rocklands; a twisted subplot involving striking workers and blackmail; the intrepid (but sometimes disoriented) forensic psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Handley; and of course the killer himself, who may or may not be the man dragging around the uncomplaining Billy. Michod keeps the suspense high, and he enlivens his tale with plenty of period visuals; he also indulges in a stylized, torqued syntax that can be awkward. While first-novel prose excesses may be excusable, fuzzy characterization is not; the urges and motivations of the main players are implausible at key moments, and readers may find it difficult to suspend disbelief and sympathize. This is a smart, daring attempt to weave fact and fiction, but here's hoping that Michod's next story doesn't get lost in the razzle-dazzle.

It has to be unnerving to finish a historical novel and then learn that your choice of setting and topic has also been turned into a nonfiction book, which has become a best-seller. Michod's heart may have sunk when he learned of the publication of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City [BKL F 15 03], a splendid historical account that juxtaposes the builder of the 1893 Columbian Exposition against a destroyer of life, the serial killer H. H. Holmes, who found victims among female fairgoers. But bad timing aside, Michod's novel remains well worth reading. He jumps off from the Holmes' murders to murders of little boys. He provides a marvelous and historically based female detective. Best of all, his painstaking research brings to life the World's Fair's grand halls and grotesque sideshows. Michod avoids the historical novelist's failing of overwhelming the reader with hard-won detail, managing instead to uses his research to great dramatic effect. Recommend this to readers of the Larson book, who will be fascinated by the fictional portrayal of many of the same events. Connie Fletcher

Annoying prose, hateful characters, erroneous information add up to complete disaster.

If you want a distorted version of historical events, with mostly fictitious characters, this book's for you. The author states "Events were shifted around to better adhere to the novel's dramatic arc." Main characters Clemantis, the Rocklands, Thom Nix, Hannibal Skurlock and the Walsh Gang are entirely fictitious. I'd describe the writing style as artsy-fartsy horrendously mixed with dream state. I didn't like any of the characters, and found the book, when sensible, to be plodding and maddening. Not sure how I got this book, perhaps confused it with the far better Devil in the White City. Regardless, this one's headed to the thrift store asap. Spend your reading time on something of higher quality.

I found this book to be very "choppy". The author had the opportunity to use an excellent storyline, but his writing was very hard to follow. He jumped from one subject to another and you had to stop reading and think about what character he was talking about. It was very confusing. I finished the book, but I didn't find it as good as I'd hoped. I doubt that I would ever purchase another of Alec Michod books.

Historical inaccuracies and opaque, hazy writing doom this book

I found several historical miscues in the first few pages. The Ferris Wheel running since May? Women wearing hoops? Did Michon do any research at all? Even aside from the obvious screw-ups (for no reason -- I'm willing to accept changing history if it needs to be changed for the story, like the ways he changed Holmes, but things like a throwaway line about the Ferris Wheel or the clothing? The only reason that's mucked up is sloppiness), the writing style is practically impenetrable. I found it impossible to tell what was going on, what was happening to whom, or who any of the characters were supposed to be. They had no identifying characteristics. None. And the murders seemed to be created to be as gross and shocking as possible, without really adding up to anything in terms of creating a profile for the killer.

I was really disappointed in this book. Oh, and I don't know who the Husker was because I didn't bother to finish, which is practically unheard of for me and mysteries.

Can't put it down...

This book completely revitalized my interest in cooking. I was growing tired of the highly complex, noveau recipes requiring obscure ingredients, and the end result was hardly worth the wait. Instead, these recipes accentuate the essence of Italian cooking - simplicity and quality ingredients. A great meal doesn't have to take all day to prepare and cook, and shouldn't require more than a handful of ingredients. Most of these recipes can be prepared with minimal effort after work and are great for family style cooking all week long, leaving great left-overs that only taste better with each re-heating. Cancel the magazine subscriptions and try this book. You will not be dissapointed with these recipes that haven't fallen short for over 100 years. Even the mediocre recipes are better than most.

Kevin McKiernan has reported on the Kurds of Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria since 1991, but he began his career as a journalist in the 1970s covering armed confrontations by Native Americans. In The Kurds: A People in Search of Their Homeland he draws parallels---using examples of culture, language, and genocide---between Native American history and the experience of the Kurds. With a population of more than twenty-five million, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without their own state, but until recently their long struggle for autonomy has received relatively little attention. Following World War I, the Kurds were promised a homeland, but the dream collapsed amid pressures of Turkish nationalism and the Allied realignment of the Middle East. For the remainder of the century, the story of the Kurds was one of almost constant conflict, as Middle East governments repressed Kurdish culture, language, and politics, destroyed thousands of Kurdish villages, "disappeared" and even gassed the Kurds---often as the West provided military assistance or simply looked away.

The Kurds are politically and ideologically diverse and were never a "nation" in the modern sense, but their struggles for self-determination have been repeatedly betrayed by outside powers. Yet in 1996, a Syrian Kurd would boldly inform the author that the Kurds "were a key to the stability of the Middle East"---prophetic words today, McKiernan writes, as the fallout from the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and other developments join to make Kurdish independence a likely, if not imminent, prospect.

McKiernan mixes Middle East history with personal narrative, as he comes face-to-face with Kurdish refugees in the mountains of Iraq and Iran, a hidden war in Turkey, guerrilla safe houses in Syria and Lebanon, backpacking trips behind army lines, scrapes with hostile soldiers, and, finally, the discovery that his personal translator during the Iraq war was also a spy for Saddam Hussein. His complex portrait of the Kurds includes interviews with Jalal Talabani, the first Kurdish president of Iraq, members of the legendary Barzani family, and Abdullah Ocalan, the now-imprisoned leader of the lengthy Kurdish uprising in Turkey. Interwoven throughout is the story of the author's charming and resilient driver who survived a terrorist attack in Iraq, and the American doctors who nursed him back to health.

McKiernan's coverage of the war in Iraq includes a visit to the camp of militants linked to al-Qaeda who were responsible for a series of suicide bombings in the Kurdish region, and he examines how U.S. preoccupation with toppling Saddam Hussein allowed many of these insurgents to escape to Iran, regroup, and later turn their jihad against the American occupation. McKiernan also examines the role of journalists in the run-up to the war as he tells how his Kurd-provided "scoop" about Iraqi scientists came to be used in U.S. claims that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.

the truth and the courage to talk about it

this book deserves kudos and nothing else. the fact is, mckiernan has spent several decades researching the kurds' story "in the field" inside turkey and he has had the courage to write about the truth, an unsettling truth for those of us who honor human and cultural rights. do not believe the turkish government and military forces, and what is said for example in the review by oki oki on this book. that is all sheer propaganda, exactly what the usa and turkey want the world to believe. i encourage all to read this book and think about it profoundly. it speaks the truth.

In The Kurds, journalist and filmmaker McKiernan offers a gripping tale of travel among the Kurds of northern Iraq, Turkey, and, briefly, Iran. Based on trips taken over fifteen years, his anecdotes give depth and perspective to Kurdish society. He augments his narrative with historical background. In describing the origins of the Kurds, for example, he relays not only the local Kurdish explanation that they are descended from the Medean Empire (seventh century B.C.E.) but also the scholarly debate which pours cold water on that myth.

McKiernan's tale begins in Iran where he headed at the behest of a nongovernmental organization to assist Iraqi Kurdish refugees fleeing the 1991 uprising. He relates a midnight interrogation by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards while the hotel manager, "a Kurd in a police state," looked on, "a look of embarrassment on his face." Over the next chapters and years, McKiernan shuttles between Iraq and Turkey where he meets local Kurds, as well as officials and others. Importantly, he traces the evolution of the Kurdish issue in Washington, recalling how in 1992, Kurdish officials such as Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader Jalal Talabani--Iraq's current president--had difficulty getting meetings at the State Department.

It is easy to romanticize the Kurds - the perennial underdogs who have overcome great odds - and too many journalists do so. But McKiernan does not, nor does he whitewash Kurdish history in Iraq. He addresses the 1994-97 internecine civil war in which Talabani and his rival, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) president Masoud Barzani, sent each other's supporters to mass graves. He also describes the KDP obsession with spying upon and controlling foreign press and visitors.

Such balance, however, does not extend to the Turkish Kurds. McKiernan's account oozes with antipathy toward Turkey. He wrongly calls Kurds "second class citizens" in Turkey, ignoring that presidents, foreign ministers, and scores of parliamentarians have been Kurdish. Lack of education and urban-rural divide better explain the social differences in Turkey than ethnicity. Too often McKiernan uncritically accepts the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) narrative, though many Kurds consider it a terrorist group.
The second half of The Kurds discusses the 2003 Iraq war. McKiernan captures the atmosphere of anxiety that [...] might again launch chemical weapons against the Iraqi Kurds. His provides a gripping account of the [...] attempt on PUK prime minister Barham Salih. He describes how Iraqi Kurds would sell stories about weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to U.S. reporters willing to pay for them. This raises an important but unaddressed question: how much of what entered U.S. news accounts originated with Kurdish political parties?

McKiernan's writing is eloquent, but uneven analysis weakens his narrative. That U.S. government officials cite the open press in speeches should not lead to the conclusion that they derive their information from newspaper stories. Conspiracy theories lace his account, such as the silly idea that the Pentagon hid the death of U.S. servicemen during the 2003 war. While a frequent theme of Baathist propaganda, such cover-ups are impossible given soldiers' parents, wives, and children, as well as the U.S. government's pension system. It is unclear how representative McKiernan's encounters are, or whether he reinterprets or revises observations in order to appear more astute. He appears to exaggerate Kurdish-Shi'ite distrust. Analogies to American Indians and false predictions of civil war cheapen what is ultimately a good read but an uneven account of an important time and region.

Although Wallace (Who Killed Kurt Cobain?) is a recipient of Rolling Stone's Award for Investigative Journalism and appears to have done much primary research, he delivers a highly speculative rehash of material handled much better in A. Scott Berg's Lindbergh, Robert Lacey's Ford: The Man and the Machine and such seminal studies as Charles Higham's American Swastika. Wallace tries and fails to sensationalize well-known facts about the parochial American fifth column of the late 1930s and early '40s, a bungling movement of which Ford and Lindbergh were among the most public faces. Wallace sees a conspiracy in what he presents as Ford's pro-Nazi partnership with Lindbergh: a dark and powerful alliance designed to hinder the Allies at every turn. In fact, the two men were far more naive than effectual in their attempts to prop up American isolationism before Pearl Harbor. And Lindbergh, who counted Harry Guggenheim among his closest friends, found Ford's hatred of Jews repugnant. Once war was declared, both Lindbergh and Ford helped the Allied effort. Lindbergh helped develop the Corsair and later, as a "civilian observer," flew more than 25 combat missions over the South Pacific. At the same time, Ford (with Lindbergh's help, and after a few false starts) became the leading manufacturer of the B-24 bomber. Were Ford and Lindbergh half-witted dupes of Nazi propaganda before the war? Undoubtedly. Were they Nazi agents either before or after the start of hostilities? About the Author
Max Wallace is a veteran journalist and Holocaust researcher. He spent three years as an interviewer for Steven Spielberg's Shoah Project, documenting the testimonies of Holocaust survivors. A winner of the Rolling Stone Magazine Award for Investigative Journalism, Wallace is the author of Who Killed Kurt Cobain? and Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight. He has also contributed to the New York Times and the BBC. He lives in Toronto, Canada.

Superbly written, throughly documented, history

I cannot BELIEVE the negative reviews that this book has received on this site - and you shouldn't either! This is one of the most carefully researched, extensively footnoted, beautifully written, books on this subject ever published. The sources include entries from Lindbergh's journal, Lindbergh's speeches, FBI files, letters from German archives, Ford company records, and many other primary sources. Every assertion of fact is backed up with unimpeachable documentation. This is not in any way a hatchet job. Wallace goes out of his way to tell us what we do not know for sure, and to give his subjects the benefit of the doubt whenever possible.

But, even so, what emerges is a damning portrait of Ford and Lindbergh. The degree of responsibility for the success of the Third Reich that must be borne by these two men will astonish you. The author, using polls from the time, deftly demolishes the utterly bogus argument that these two men were simply reflecting the prevailing attitudes of the majority of Americans, as anyone who had actually read the book would know.

When Wallace, near the end of the book, expands his scope to address the reasons such admittedly poorly educated (and in Lindbergh's case, incredibly naïve and, in my opinion, rather stupid) individuals were able to have such influence over the events of the 1930's and 1940's, he is addressing the deeper issues that lie behind the events he has described - such as humanity's apparent need for heroes, and those heroes' concomitant responsibility to think, speak, and act humanely and honorably. Charles Lindbergh and Henry Ford brought great harm to humanity, most especially to the Jews, during their years on the world stage. They should be held responsible for it.

You will never realize how deeply these two American heroes supported the Nazi cause.

Charles Lindbergh and Henry Ford knew exactly what they were doing when they received their awards from the Nazis in the late 1930's. However, their degree of support, in the case of Ford wittingly, and in the case of Lindbergh perhaps not so, for the fascist side, and the Nazis in general has not been documented. This book is well researched, objective, manages to see both sides of an equation, and should be considered as part of the definitive biographies on both men. Excellent sourcing of materials.
