After its catchy opening sentence—"Like everyone else in the world I am a lawyer"—Major's second novel loses its snap. The plot chronicles the descent of Dev Degraw, an attorney from Tuscaloosa, Ala., who's washed up at age 33. His career is in meltdown, his marriage is deep-sixed, he owes money all over town and his thirst for alcohol easily trumps any desire for rescue or redemption. His life now consists of a few coherent moments inside liquor-soaked days, moments he spends in two main pursuits: trying to avoid getting sucked into his father's gubernatorial re-election campaign and finding a way to skip the cast reunion of an awful television show, Bayou Dog, he acted in as a child. He's also trying to stay one step ahead of a client whose case he completely botched. That client finally catches up to Dev and gives him what he deserves. Majors (Swimming in Sky) does a very good job of creating a character in a tailspin. There are moments of some poignancy, particularly with Dev's five-year-old daughter, as well as many clever one-liners ("She has summer teeth. Summer there, some ain't"). But Dev's self-pitying ways get tiresome, and the plot—what there is of it—is so weighed down by page after page of drunken quasi-comedy that it almost becomes unintelligible.

Generally these novels represent the long-winded harangue of a self-destructive malcontent who is adept at verbally skewering everything but reserves his most potent arrows for his own foot. Dev Degraw is such a character. He is the son of the governor of Alabama, a recently divorced father, a miserable lawyer, and a former child actor of a failed TV series. When his father's campaign for reelection stalls, staffers ask Dev to clean up his act. Impossible. Soon Dev is placing crank phone calls, being thrown out of bars, antagonizing his neighbor's dogs, provoking fistfights, and getting kidnapped at gunpoint. The planned reunion of TV's failed Bayou Dog goes off with many a hitch, and Dev is the perfect narrator to satirize the proceedings with his lexical inventiveness and unrelenting sarcasm. A Terrific Read!

This book is terrific! Majors' people, places, and attitudes are far-reaching, extending beyond the confines of their Alabama borders. Although I was, at first, disengaged from the slacker protagonist Dev Degraw, I soon found a complex, interesting, and downright loveable soul hiding behind his devil-may-care facade. The first 30 pages or so were somewhat slow-going, but once the characters and plot are in place, the pace and humor are in the I-can't-go-to-bed-until-I-finish-this-chapter category. I highly recommend this book for its laugh-out-loud passages. The wit is first rate and the style of wry irony highly appealing for the fiction reader who also longs for that rariety: a thoughtful, sophisticated writing style, challenging vocabulary, and a surprise turn of events. If you enjoy Dave Eggers and Augusten Burroughs, this book showcases the best qualities of both writers--a treat you owe yourself! Sure to perk up the dreariest of winter blahs. Done it again

With "Wonderdog" Inman Majors has once again written a novel full of outrageous characters that will make you laugh aloud and ponder the workings of this wacky world. These characters and their antics will stay with you long after you've closed the book, and you'll never think of sweater vests or sticks of butter in the same way again. In particular, I enjoyed the voice of the narrator, a fast-talking, fast thinking wit whose humor comes fast and subtle, the sharp perceptions and wisdom catching you unawares and surprising you as good fiction should. The plot resists predictability and sentimentality, propelling you forward through a tumultuous week in the life of Dev DeGraw, on whom the crown of inherited fame rests precariously. I'm waiting for a sequel.

'Wonderdog' is a wonderful read

What a great book.

Inman Majors' second novel is funny, poignant, engaging and just darn good. The Publishers Weekly reviewer is correct in that the book doesn't have too much of a plot. But that's a good thing. Because it allows Majors to do what he does best -- develop character. And that, after all, is what any writer worth a darn should do.

This is a Southern tale in the best of what that means -- politics, sex, drinkin', the wonderful, horrible mind-set of Saturday night hell raisin' meets Sunday morning heaven praisin'.

But let's not get too fancy about it. "Wonderdog" is a wonderful, well-written read. Period.

British philosopher and editor Law explores 25 of life's Big Questions in a sprightly volume designed to be a "course in thinking philosophically." Categorizing each philosophical "adventure" as Warm-up, Moderate or More Challenging, he addresses queries both grand and eternal ("Does God Exist?" and "Where Did the Universe Come From?" are two of his chapters) and controversial and contemporary ("What's Wrong with Gay Sex?" and "But is it Art?"). Lay readers looking for a comprehensible introduction to critical thinking will benefit from Law's straightforward exposition of each topic; opposing arguments are clearly organized in a tennis match of sorts: Law has two diners, for example, spar over whether eating meat can be morally justified. (Animals eat other animals, one says. But they don't know right from wrong, his companion says. Eating animals comes naturally to us, says the first. But so does violence, says the second. Etc.) In the chapter on morality's supposed dependence on religion, a section titled "An Argument for the Existence of God" is followed by the impressively accessible "Plato's Refutation of the Popular Argument," which is then countered with the "'But God is Good' Reply," and so on. The writing is lively and accessible, thanks to Law's passion for his subject and his creative use of zany conversations between future scientists about the possibility of time travel, for example, and his whimsical examples of strange objects called "fubbyloofers" to demonstrate the difficulty of determining what is art. The best of these essays end inconclusively, encouraging readers to consult the additional resources Law recommends. When Law unabashedly declares his final opinion-"In short, what creationists practice isn't good science-it's bunk"-it has the potential to offend. It detracts, too, from the book's admirable aim to "provide the skills needed to think independently" and "help fortify your courage in making a moral stand."

Everyone should read this book to develop their thought process.

A book like this one isn't about the conclusions that are reached in its discussions. It is about the thought process used to guide those discussions. We all can use help sharpening our thinking and nothing but good can come of it.

Stephen Law presents 25 interesting and accessible philosophy questions and tackles them primarily in the form of dialogs between two people on opposite sides of the issue. Typically one uses a rational, reasoned approach while the other takes an approach based on a softer footing and is inevitably trumped. Often, Law's conclusions are obvious from the outset, but a few times I found my own beliefs challenged and really had to take a step back and reconsider my own position.

If you are interested in honing your own thinking and like open discussions of topics, you will truly enjoy this book and be a better thinker when you finish it.

A Book for those Looking for a Good Mental Workout!!!

This easy-to-read book by philosophy lecturer, editor, and author Dr. Stephen Law presents to the reader "25 short adventures in thinking." In other words, this book is a short course in "thinking philosophically." Each of the twenty-five chapters or essays addresses a different philosophical question, "explaining key positions and arguments along the way."

What are the philosophical questions and topics discussed? Below, I will divide the essays into categories and give the question or topic addressed. (Note the order of the essays presented here is different from that in the book):

(1) Logic

(i) Eight everyday reasoning errors. (An error in reasoning is called a fallacy.)
(ii) Seven paradoxes in reasoning. (Presented are plausible arguments leading to seemingly implausible conclusions.)

(2) Morality

(i) Is gay sex morally permissible?
(ii) Can we have morality without God and religion?
(iii) Is it morally acceptable to design children genetically?
(iv) Is it right to sacrifice the life of one conjoined twin to save the other?
(v) Is it morally acceptable to eat meat?
(vi) Is the rightness or wrongness of an act based on our emotional reactions to the act?

(3) God

(i) Does God exist?
(ii) Is creationism scientific?
(iii) Miracles and the supernatural.
(iv) Where did the universe come from?

(4) Consciousness

(i) Could a machine think?
(ii) Are you just a brain in a vat?
(iii) Is consciousness something impossible for science to explain?
(iv) What's essential as far as being you is concerned?
(v) How do you know that there are other minds?

(5) Expectations

(i) Why expect the sun to rise tomorrow?
(ii) Should we ever expect to be punished?

(6) Truth

(i) Is there such a thing as the absolute truth to any question?
(ii) Are mathematics and its truths ultimately made by us?

(7) Puzzles

(i) What is meaning, exactly?
(ii) What is knowledge?
(iii) Is time travel possible?
(iv) What is art, exactly?

These essays can be read in any order desired. In other words, you don't have to read the essays in the order indicated in the table of contents. Their level of difficulty is indicated at the beginning of each essay. Suggestions for further reading (including internet sites) can be found at the end of each essay.

This book also incorporates a variety of styles. There are dialogues, philosophical stories and thought experiments, illustrations (many of which I felt were not necessary), and sections called "thinking tools" to explain key philosophical ideas. (These thinking tool sections, are, in my opinion, a major highlight of this book.)

Be aware that these essays are not the definitive answers to the questions posed above but only reflect Law's views. If you find yourself disagreeing with the author's views in any essay (as I did), then that's good and is a "healthy sign." It means that Law has done his job of stimulating your thinking. Remember this is not an "answer" book but is a "thinking" book.

I also felt that the brief introduction that has the sections "What is Philosophy," "Applying Philosophy to Life," and "Other Reasons to Think Philosophically" was excellent. Be sure to read these sections first.

I felt an absolute beginner to philosophy might have trouble with this book. This is because major argumentative terms like premise, conclusion, counterargument, etc. are not defined at the beginning but are defined as you get further into the book. A brief glossary would have alleviated this problem.

As well, the logic essay on "Eight everyday reasoning errors" should, I feel, be the first essay in this book. (Instead it is essay number 24). In this way, the reader can get practice in trying to determine whether any of the essays presented have these errors. My recommendation is to read this essay first after reading the above introductory sections.

In one essay, Law's conclusion is that "what creationists practise isn't good science-it's bunk." I felt this conclusion as stated was too harsh and may offend some.

Law uses some knowledge gained from science in some of his essays. Yet he does not reference his sources. I thought this was a major oversight.

Finally, this book is not just an introductory text. It can be effectively read by those who have some prior philosophy background (like myself).

In conclusion, for a good and stimulating intellectual workout, this is the book to read!!

Given the polarization of contemporary America, says historian and former National Book Foundation executive director Baldwin, "we need to turn to galvanizing beliefs that will provide a unifying focus...." To this end, Baldwin ably investigates 10 key precepts of what might be called "fundamental Americanism," while at the same time highlighting iconic Americans who helped to define and articulate those precepts. Here we have biographical sketches of early Massachusetts governor John Winthrop, who offered the idea of a "city on a hill"; Thomas Paine's Common Sense; Pierre Du Simitière's notion of "E pluribus unum"; Emerson's vision of self-reliance; John L. O'Sullivan's concept of manifest destiny and, of more recent vintage, the enlightened generosity embodied in the post-WWII Marshall Plan. But in whittling these down to the arbitrary number of 10, Baldwin necessarily leaves out a great deal. Any collection such as this desperately needs Abraham Lincoln's soaring poetry regarding government "of the people, by the people, for the people," and a nod to the Declaration of Independence and JFK's inaugural speech, among other key rhetorical pillars of the American experiment.

A Thought-Provoking Narrative

Americans love political discussion and debate. From colonial days when pamphlets and town meetings were the mechanism of discourse, to modern times when talk radio and political blogs stimulate discussion of important public issues, robust political debate is a crucial element of American life. For many, an important element of current debate centers on the historical perspective. From documents and speeches such as The Federalist Papers, George Washington's farewell address and Lincoln's second inaugural address, great respect is often given to the intellectual contributions of America's founding fathers. It is a rare day when the opinion pages of major print media or television commentators do not make reference to the written word of bygone centuries.

THE AMERICAN REVELATION: Ten Ideals That Shaped Our Country From the Puritans to the Cold War, by Neil Baldwin, is both a thought-provoking and thoughtful narrative of important examples of ideas that have shaped American thought, life, and our unique American identity. The ideas selected by the author pre-date the founding of the United States as a nation and traverse nearly four centuries of American life. By the author's own admission, they are not intended to be exhaustive. Rather, they are a selection, a few out of many ideas, concepts and phrases of American history and how they came to be part of the American lexicon.

Baldwin's list is neither political nor polemic. His first selection, "City on a Hill," the remarks of John Winthrop to the Massachusetts Bay Colonists in 1630, has been quoted by proponents of diverse political philosophies --- President Ronald Reagan and Governor Mario Cuomo, to name just two. Baldwin's discussion of The Marshall Plan, the American effort to rebuild a shattered European continent after World War II, is probably the finest example in American history of truly bi-partisan foreign policy in action. In each chapter Baldwin provides the reader with a brief biographical note of the author of an important contribution to American thought, the times in which the author lived, and the impact of the ideas on the American nation. In a nation that still fiercely debates the words and deeds of its founding fathers, it is important to stimulate debate about American values throughout the life of our country in order to understand what those values truly are.

It is Neil Baldwin's belief that our nation is currently suffering the consequences of a deeply divisive political debate. The pulse of 21st century America, he writes, "often sounds as if it is emanating from two separate heartbeats." Americans need to turn to core beliefs that can provide a unifying focus for our thoughts and our lives. There have been times in the life of our nation when such unifying thoughts were presented to the nation. They may have been, in the words of Thomas Paine, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry George, Jane Adams, or any of the ten sculptors of American thought whose words serve as the foundation of THE AMERICAN REVELATION. The perilous times in which we live demand an idealism that leads to a new definition of patriotism and national character. That critical goal begins with one citizen and one reader at a time.

Not a bad read

The 10 ideas that shaped America is quite an important topic of conversation, really. Why DID we get this way, exactly? How did we come about? Why do we have the dichotomy of a nation founded by religions, but a government free of them? Why did we shun socialism when Europe embraced it? Unfortunately, after reading this book I did not feel that any questions were answered.

Neal Baldwin is easy to read, that much can surely be said. But each chapter was so divorced from the other as to leave the reader imagining that he were reading a simple volume of selected essays from various sources with no overriding theme. To be fair, Mr. Baldwin does warn that he didn't intend any overarching theme, but that sort of makes the book a bit hollow.

And, my biggest problem with this small tome is that he ignored the Founder's ideas of representative democracy leaving it out of the mix. These ideas were the bedrock of our nation without which we would not have had an America in the first place. I believe his second chapter should have been on the Declaration of Independence.

Also it would have helped to have some thread enlightening us as to how the preceding chapter foreshadowed the next. After all, enlightenment ( that of showing the reader what great ideas led Americans to today) was the goal of Mr. Baldwin's work.

Still, the book did lead me to seek out some other sources and that is valuable in and of itself.

So, I give it three stars. An interesting read, but not what it could have been.

ten interesting biographical essays

The premise of these ten biographical essays is to concentrate on individuals who brought "fundamental Americanism", values at a time in which our leaders prefer polarizing the people to consolidate power via the money mechanism needed for reelections. Readers may disagree on the choices (no presidents), which is part of the fun of this tome. For instance, this reviewer expected Lincoln as the influence of changing from state-centric to national-conscience, but instead he failed to make the cut and some that were selected I never heard of before. Historical buffs will enjoy reading about values of this country from the seventeenth century: John Winthrop; eighteenth century: Thomas Paine and Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere; nineteenth century: Ralph Waldo Emerson, John L. O'Sullivan, and Henry George; twentieth century: Jane Addams, Israel Zangwill, Carter G. Woodson, and George C. Marshall. Written somewhat like the required reading of an American History 101 course, Neil Baldwin presents a fascinating concept supported by his chosen ones who he argues lived the American ideal of individual freedom and rights.

Great Brain teasers

When you complete one of these crosswords (without using a dictionary or cheating!) you really feel like you have accomplished something. I love it when I complete a puzzle that I didn't even start filling in until about clue #20! You can't go wrong with Will Shortz.

Tough puzzles indeed, but unfortunately, without themes.

A selection of Crossword puzzles from the Friday/Saturday N.Y. Times Newspaper.

These are, as the title adequately suggests, hard crossword puzzles. They are puzzles that will give you a thorough cerebral workout; they require lots of thought and the occasional use of a crossword puzzle book for obscure names, references etc. However, they were do-able with some determination and perseverance.

However the main questions is...were they fun? In a word...NO! Well, at least not as much as I'd hoped. Why? Let me explain.

The puzzles in this book are set up on your basic 15x15 grid, but, unfortunately, without any particular theme connected to them. In fact, it was this volume of puzzles made me realize that my definition of a really entertaining crossword puzzle MUST have a 'theme' associated with it; that is, a set of somewhat related definitions that usually have answers involving some deceptive phrases or some tricky word-plays. These type of puzzles (with a theme) can be found in the weekend edition of the N.Y. Times puzzle as well as several other newpapers.

Conclusion:
These are, tough crossword puzzles, as the title correctly stated.
However, I love my crossword puzzles with a devious theme and there are none in this volume. But, I have no one to blame but myself as I should have read the title of this soft-covered book more carefully. Next time I'll I look a little closer at the title and the material within.

Starred Review. In Bruen's superb new pulp-inspired novel featuring Inspector Brant (after 2005's Vixen), the Southeast London Police Squad is plagued by a serial murderer who's determined to give his victims a lesson in manners. Taking a cue from Jim Thompson's The Killer Inside Me, the "Manners Killer" believes that anyone who behaves rudely in public (e.g., verbally abuses a store clerk, slaps a child) is fair game. He soon finds that he's no match for Brant, Bruen's amoral, sociopathic brute of a detective ("He was heavily built with a black Irish face that wasn't so much lived in as squatted upon"). While his methods may be questionable, Brant gets results, and we find ourselves secretly cheering him on. Meanwhile, Brant is writing his first crime novel, Calibre, and aspires to become the English Joseph Wambaugh. Of course, he doesn't let the fact that he can't write deter him; Brant just nicks the stories from his cop buddy Porter Nash. Bruen's furious hard-boiled prose, chopped down to its trademark essence, never fails to astonish. (Aug.)

Bruen is so prolific that there is mounting evidence he could supply his own book-of-the-month club. It doesn't seem to affect his quality, though: if you like him, you'll still like him; if you don't, you still won't. Switching gears from his Jack Taylor series (The Dramatist, 2006), Bruen returns to cops-and-robbers London and the cast of characters last seen in Vixen (2005). This postmodern crime novel pits the Ed McBain-loving antihero Sergeant Brant against a new villain, the Jim Thompson--obsessed Manners Killer. Well, against is a strong word in this morally murky universe, but one of them does have a badge. Bruen has referenced McBain's 87th Precinct series often enough that it's clear he is writing his own version, though the brutality, cynicism, and racism of the characters almost guarantee they won't reach as wide an audience. Bruen is so stinting on description that it's hard to keep some of them straight--but the completely corrupt, satanically funny Brant probably could carry the whole thing on his shoulders. Noir as a Blunt Instrument

It's impossible to categorize Ken Bruen. His jarring, disjointed chronicles of crime follow no convention, and while his respect for the masters of pulp fiction:

McBain
Chandler
Thompson

is faithfully imbedded in his prose, Bruen mimics none of them. His style and his formulae are all his own:

Brutal
In your face
No apologies

"Calibre" is the latest Bruen masterpiece from Hell. A serial killer is on the loose, reaping vengeance on the rude, the inconsiderate, the boorish clods that spread their venom often and indiscriminately. The killer, "Ford", follows Jim Thompson's classic, "The Killer Inside Me", like it were the holy writ, a student of CSI dispatching his random and manner-less victims with vicious and intelligent efficiency. The perfect criminal - or so he thinks...

Back to crack the case is the incorrigible sergeant Brant of the Southeast London police, a character as unconventional and unique as Bruen himself. Brant's disregard for authority is legendary, but Dirty Harry is perfectly prissy compared to Brant's distain for rules and the law, which he routinely breaks with impunity. And while Brant's superiors would like to see him on the other side of the bars, he keeps his tracks covered while solving crime with methods guaranteed to keep the self-appointed watchdogs of politically correct police procedure in an uncomfortable state of apoplexy.

Take note: Ken Bruen and Sergeant Brant are not for all tastes. If you're looking for a clean police procedural with cool crime scene forensics, intricate plots, and a tidy conclusion, Bruen's rapid-fire dialog and sketchy story development may leave you wanting. Bruen, like his anti-hero Brant, are more suited to writing with a Molotov cocktail than a typewriter. But if you're looking for a new definition of noir, of grit and reality and black humor that is told without apology that could not care less who or what it offends, well, what are you waiting for?

Another page-turner from Bruen

Many American readers are familiar with Ken Bruen from his four acclaimed hard-boiled mysteries featuring Jack Taylor, a drug and booze addicted Galway private eye. If you only know Bruen's work from the Taylor series, you're in for a treat. For Bruen is also the author of a police procedural series set in southeast London, featuring the amoral Sergeant Brant.

CALIBRE is the sixth entry in the series that began in 1998. This is one of those books that once you read it, you immediately will have to search out and buy all the other books featuring Brant and his fellow constables. It's so enjoyable and fast-paced that if you're like me, you'll want to catch up with everything you missed.

Bruen, who lives in Galway, Ireland, is a brilliant, creative, original voice. He is a writer clearly seeped in the American hard-boiled and noir tradition; he had been called a "Celtic Dashiell Hammett." And indeed, if you are Irish, you instinctively know about the dark side of life even before you learn to read. History resonates. But part of being Irish is to leaven the bad stuff with a caustic, fatalistic, often-hilarious sense of humor. And that is evident in Bruen's work.

The constables in CALIBRE work in a section of London where the kids view the police in an atmosphere of "hostility on speed" and cops carry around "simmering rage." This social tension is bound to produce trouble. Enter the "manners psycho."

In a letter taunting the cops, he makes clear his goals: "Anyone, and I mean anyone, who behaves like an a------ in public shall be terminated." This mission, he writes in his journal, is "my reality TV."

Now here is a serial killer for modern times. This is a serial killer who would require weapons of mass destruction and a large appointment book. His first victim viciously berates his girlfriend in a café, reducing her to tears. He meets his grim fate when he is pushed in front of a Brit Rail train. Victim number two is a harried female executive who curses out a cab driver. The killer simply follows her into her office building and tosses her out the window.

The constables of the Southeast London "Met" who get the case have issues of their own. Brant, we learn, "was heavily built with a black Irish face that wasn't so much lived in as squatted upon." Inspector Roberts is trying to keep alive his perfect record of solving cases while finding the funds to buy clothes he thinks are stylish but aren't. Female Constable Falls is trying to resurrect her career after a disastrous earlier case lands her literally in the basement. Porter Nash has to deal with being both diabetic and gay. PC McDonald is badly burned out, terrified after being shot on the job.

Throughout this book, Bruen pays homage to the American masters of noir, which Brant likes to call "Nora." At one point, the serial killer, a crooked accountant by trade, tells us, "America appreciates a decent killer." It is probably something that won't make the travel brochures, but both our killer and Brant read and love American mysteries.

The killer is a big fan of Jim Thompson and takes his pen name, Ford, after the protagonist of THE KILLER INSIDE ME. He also dreams, lucky for us, of coming to America, where he will "Get me a pick-up, rifle on the rack, dog on the front seat, a coonhound of course, Hank Williams on the speakers."

Sergeant Brant owns the entire Ed McBain 87th Precinct series and is inspired, sort of, to write a book after McBain's character, Fat Ollie Weeks, does the same in FAT OLLIE'S BOOK. Brant could be Fat Ollie's English cousin, only far worse.

Bruen clearly models this series after the 87th Precinct novels. He establishes the individual story lines of the cops and weaves them seamlessly throughout the book. But the comparison ends there, and Bruen provides his Irish, ironic twist. McBain wrote his series to honor the hard-working, high-integrity cops; Bruen turns that notion on its head.

Bruen's series is kind of the 87th Precinct drunk on power and twisted by drugs and personal demons. In other words, the anti-87th Precinct.

Take Brant, for example, who has more in common with Thompson killer cop Sheriff Ford than McBain's hero cop, Carella. Brant steals dope from drug dealers, has sex with hookers who are also witnesses, lies, manipulates people at will, drugs other cops, breaks into homes and seems to be not above murdering bad guys without a trial.

What a delightful bad good guy or good bad guy. He is described by others in the book as "attractive in a mad dog fashion" and a "brute force." His prospective literary agent, who he has just bedded in yet another ethical lapse, calls him "you animal." "His history was littered with darkness, and the way he survived that was to keep it locked up tight," Bruen writes.

But through it all, there is plenty of dark humor and a hell of a lot of fun, as readers can't wait to see what Brant will do next. He is, after all, an excellent detective.

Bruen is a terrific writer and he might have created the police procedural for the early 21st century. Remember that McBain started his series in the more innocent and optimistic 1950s. Bruen paints a picture of an existential world where sometimes really bad guys will do things for good reasons and basically good guys do really bad things. But hope never dies. The book ends with the words of poor Porter Nash:

"Worse, somewhere in his mind was the mad notion that the cops were still the good guys, but this proved they were seriously deranged...Mainly, he was saddened. Sighing, he figured that he'd do what he did best, continue to fight the bedraggled fight."

If you read CALIBRE, you are going to do exactly what I did: go right online and order another Brant story. Ken Bruen writes fast; this is his 17th book. That is very good news for mystery fans, who can look forward to many more years of Sergeant Brant and Jack Taylor.

Yet another great book from Ken Bruen

I opened this book early this afternoon, and couldn't put it down until I finished it. Calibre is both a tribute to Ed McBain and Jim Thompson, and once again establishes Ken Bruen as one of the top crime-fiction writers working today. Fast-paced, immensely enjoyable, this is one of Bruen's Brant books, and involves among other things, a killer who idolizes Jim Thompson's Lou Ford, and wants to help install better manners in London by killing people displaying bad manners. The book also takes a clever poke at the publishing industry in general. In short, any fan of Bruen's will love this book, and anyone who hasn't discovered Bruen yet, will become a fan after reading Calibre.

Sarah Churchill (1660-1744) famously feuded with just about everyone: kings and queens, family members, prominent politicians. In her lifetime, she was vilified in the press by such writers as Jonathan Swift for her "undue" influence over Queen Anne, for her alleged domination of her famous husband and for her legendary ability to hold a grudge. Sarah came from humble origins. As a young servant at the court of Charles II, she met Princess Anne, with whom she developed a passionate relationship; they may even have been lovers, as the Oxford-educated Field tells it. At court, Sarah also met her husband, John Churchill, later duke of Marlborough and one of the 18th century's greatest generals. Sarah exerted great influence, especially after Anne became queen and the duke a national hero. Shortly into Anne's reign, Sarah feuded with the queen: Anne sided with the Tories, while Sarah was a committed Whig. Moreover, Anne turned to a new favorite, Abigail Masham. After their falling out, Sarah threatened to expose the queen's impassioned letters to her. By the end of Anne's reign, both Sarah and her husband had been dismissed from the court. Sarah lived out her life quarreling with her children and grandchildren, as well as with Prime Minister Robert Walpole, and writing her memoirs in self-vindication. Sarah's intimate relationship with Queen Anne serves as the natural centerpiece of this biography. One of the queen's most favored companions for a great number of years, Sarah eventually blackmailed Anne, whom she believed to have unceremoniously dumped her for another female friend. Intriguingly, Sarah threatened to expose Anne as a lesbian, an accusation that would have implicated Sarah in her own attempted slander of the queen. Such a gutsy power play was par for the course for a savvy operator who used any backdoor source available to her as a woman to wield social, political, and economic power in a man's world. Married to one of England's greatest generals, she exploited whatever and whomever possible in order to advance the Whig party or to increase her already immense fortune. She liked her subject

A fair bit of the text in this book went towards explaining why Sarah Churchill has been undervalued or unfairly treated in previous biographies. In certain sections this is helpful, in others it is very distracting. In some ways, I wish this biographer could have been a bit more objective about her subject; she made it seem as though Sarah's missteps in politics were completely out of her control, when in fact a healthy dose of tact and respect for other people's feelings (without betraying her own convictions, just with respect for others) might have won her more success in her endeavors. That said, for Sarah Jennings to rise from impoverished gentility to a wealthy and powerful duchess (not to mention founding a well-known and lasting dynasty) is not merely remarkable, but almost incredible.

Overall, the biography was very good, although I wish it would have had a family tree showing how the Marlborough family grew, who all the granchildren were and when they were born (not to mention which of Sarah's daughters were their mothers) and even possibly a chronology, as the scope of Sarah's life and the breadth of her story made it sometimes difficult to put certain events into context.

An objective portrait of a remarkable woman

Sarah Churchill, 1st Duchess of Marlborough gained notoriety through three things:
1. She was a lady-in-waiting/best friend to Queen Anne of England. She took this position of power for granted, treating the Queen much like a dumb child. She felt it was her right to instruct the Queen on appropriate political decisions and appointments at court. When Sarah became too pushy and arrogant, the Queen severed the friendship, leading to a very public fall from favour.
2. She was married to the military man John Churchill, who defeated Louis XIV's French army in the early 1700s (A big thing at the time - remember England and France were arch enemies). This victory led Queen Anne to give John and Sarah titles (Duke and Duchess of Marlborough) and a huge government grant to build a massive palace with - Blenheim, which still stands today outside of Oxford UK.
3. Her direct descendents include Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales.
Ophelia Field has written a biography which covers all these events, and also tells us objectively about the woman herself. She does not attempt to paint a rosy picture of Sarah, who could be stubborn and domineering. At the same time, she explains WHY Sarah did certain things (based on letters she wrote to family and friends - many excerpts included), and why her political views were as they were. Crucially, she discusses how Sarah's support of the Whig party, her deep rooted belief in their righteousness, developed into a fanatacism which led to her fall from the Queen's favour and high society. Queen Anne is also brought to life as a woman all her own, though her reign was short.
This biography was informative, educational (about the political and aristocratic climate of the time 1680s-1720s), and fascinating. It portrayed a modern woman ahead of her time. I feel if I had met Sarah Churchill, I may not have liked her (she polarised people - you either loved or hated her), but I certainly would have respected and admired her.

This second outing by coauthors Hackman and Lenihan (Wake of the Perdido Star) centers on Boyd Calvin, a 28-year-old shell-shocked World War I veteran. In 1929, Calvin stops by his ex-wife's home and finds her dead in a pool of blood, while her current boyfriend peruses a Bible in the kitchen. More shots ring out, and the lover is dead. Calvin is seen fleeing the scene, the only suspect. But the question of Calvin's guilt or innocence isn't really the point of the novel, which serves primarily to air the authors' opinions on race, class and the treatment of military veterans in America. When Calvin is initially apprehended, he lands in a jail cell next to George, a black man who's been unjustly charged with—yep, you guessed it—raping a white woman. The two become friends and fugitives together. Calvin shovels guts in a Chicago slaughterhouse and, with the help of George, briefly enters the world of early-20th-century black America and then dabbles in bootlegging. Once Calvin's travels exhaust the authors' apparent interest in exploring the social history of greater Chicago, Calvin turns himself in to the authorities to stand trial. Despite a few compelling scenes, the novel lacks focus and a unified vision, making for a tedious and poorly organized read.

In their first novel, Wake of the Perdido Star (1999), actor Hackman and coauthor Lenihan combined historical and adventure fiction. In their second collaboration, they mix historical fiction with elements of the murder mystery. As in the previous book, readers must overlook the clumsy prose style ("The sun had climbed to its 9:00 A.M. reserved spot in the sky") in order to appreciate the suspenseful story. Young Boyd Calvin, living in a small town in Illinois in the late 1920s, attempts to put his life and marriage back together after his convalescence in a hospital, where he spent time for mental strain incurred as a doughboy in the Great War. But one night, Boyd's estranged wife is shot dead, and circumstances point to him as the doer of the deed. In jail he gets acquainted with a black man accused of raping a white woman. Add into the equation a woman reporter for a Chicago newspaper who is in town to investigate the murder, and the formula for an exciting yarn springs into place. The authors show a good understanding of locale and time period, and Boyd is portrayed with enough depth to make readers care about him. Brad Hooper

I wish Gene Hackman would write more books. I have also read a western he wrote called "Payback At Morning Peak" which was excellent. Justice for None is a suspenceful story that will keep you reading to the end. I couldn't put it down because I wanted to get to the end to see how it came out.

a great read!

The atmosphere the authors created swept me back in time to the places and experiences of my youth in Illinois. Justice for None vividly and accurately describes post-World War I Mid-America and combines it with suspense to make a powerful novel. I was totally absorbed by this book and enjoyed it thoroughly.
