Finally comes the ultimate book for all those seeking to know more about the philosophy behind The Matrix and its sequels. Suppose that this world is not what it seems, and that humanity is actually just a food source supplementing a reign of machines. Welcome to the premise behind the world of The Matrix: the movie phenomenon and massive box-office series that has also produced some of film's most intelligent and thoughtful moments in the last ten years.

In the Matrix movies, "reality" is just a dreamscape, a representation that six billion points of view agree to agree is "real." So if the only reality we know is a cunning and elaborate façade, what then does that signify for us? Matrix Warrior gives us the means to understand this premise and its implications on our knowledge of self and place. Combining an in-depth examination of the film with philosophical inquiry and the teachings of Castandeda, Jake Horsley has produced in Matrix Warrior a profound yet witty analysis-and all readers need to get "unplugged."

From Booklist
When it hit the screen in 1999, The Matrix captured the imaginations of people living in a world becoming dependent on increasingly sophisticated technology. Much has been made of the film's computer-generated world, known as the matrix, and the few who escape it, including Neo, the movie's (and its sequels') hero, who transcends the matrix and sees its programming. Horsley draws connections between the world of the movie and our own world and shows how the characters in the movie transcend the false reality the matrix imposes on humanity. The matrix program focuses on humanity's most superficial, exterior desires, but once someone has "seen through the matrix, there is absolutely nothing they could ever want from it." In the conclusion to the movie trilogy, Matrix Revolutions (opening this month), moviegoers will find out whether Neo and company can defeat the matrix, and this accessible, entertaining book will be an enjoyable companion for those who want to dig deeper into the movies' rich universe. theoretical look at reality through the Matrix movies
By A Customer
This book is more than simple sugar candies for die hard fans of the movie though obviously MATRIX WARRIOR provides a reference tool for the film's cult lovers. However, there is a more powerful philosophical bent to this book that takes readers to the deeper meaning of what is reality. Jake Horsley makes a case that the movie could be real (are we someone else's dream/nightmare?) yet even more brilliantly interprets a metaphysical meaning of realistic pragmatism. Like The Matrix, he pleads with his audience to unplug themselves in search of the real inner person by discarding the masks of society and to stop being the source of energy for someone else.
MATRIX WARRIOR is a one sitting easy to read work that is also a thought-provoking analysis of the movie yet is more at least in the reality of this reviewer. Mr. Horsley provides an interesting strongly supported theory that the underlying theme to The Matrix is to unplug oneself from the machines of society. There is no doubt that Mr. Horsley has done just that with this intriguing look at society through the spectrum of The Matrix movies. Editorial asides: (1) reality to this sixties lost soul of going unplugged is if this is all I received by being plugged I was cheated; (2) the middle picture was filler that needed more confrontation/debate between the Architect and the hero; and (3) Mr. Horsley owes a follow-up guide book once the third movie is unplugged. Readers who appreciate a theoretical look at reality (interesting phrasing) through a microcosmic analysis of The Matrix will enjoy this well written cerebral work.

Take the Red Pill, if you dare...
By Nicq MacDonald
What is the Matrix?

You've asked yourself this, time and time again. You know there's something wrong with the world that you're living in- something doesn't work. You feel like an alien. You know there has to be something more than this.

In this daring little book, Jake Horsley suggests that your intuitions might just be correct. "Matrix Warrior" is a manual for living the life of a seeker- someone not looking for little spiritual thrills, but radical liberation. Disguised as a pop culture tome, Horsley uses analogies from The Matrix and the literary works of Phillip K. Dick (a significant influence on the mythology of The Matrix) and the metaphysical storytelling of Carlos Castaneda to spin a battle plan for those who would wage war against the apparent world. The author suggests that people can be divided into four categories- "humatons", or those who are asleep, "matrix warriors", those who know that there is more to life than they've been offered, "matrix sorcerers", those who are no longer under the control of the matrix and able to manipulate it to some extent, and "lucids"- people, like Neo, who are totally liberated from the matrix. This book is about the first step- becoming a "matrix warrior", and preparing to take advantage of opportunities to "unplug"- those rare events in life when we are offered a way to radically change our circumstances and embrace a more authentic mode of being. Along the way, there are digressions on ethics, metaphysics, futurism, and many other topics. While the Castanedan influence is apparent, one uncredited (though obvious) influence is the work of Aleister Crowley, especially regarding the way of the will.

There are some slight deficiencies- the author didn't seem to entirely "get" the later Matrix films- in fact, he doesn't seem to understand them at all (for a better grasp, listen to the commentary tracks on the DVDs themselves, where Cornel West and Ken Wilber spin an interesting glimpse at the deeper implications of the movies). But other than that quibble, "Matrix Warrior" is an excellent little book, and well worth your time... if you want to take the red pill, and find out how deep the rabbit hole goes...

An adjunct to the movie, or a textbook in its own right
By L. Snell
This book is so closely linked to the film "The Matrix" that, before recommending it, I would want to know what the potential reader's standing with regard to the film.

Firstly, for the out-and-out Matrix fan or "Neo-phyte"- and that includes both those who loved the original film and hated the sequels and those who loved the whole series - I'd say this book is a must-read. Jake Horsley takes the film's virtual reality concept and provides a whole set of philosophical and practical tools for exploring onwards. The intellectual challenge presented by the film becomes a life-challenge for self- and universe-exploration and growth. If no more Matrix films are ever made - or if future sequels sink so low as to be not worth viewing - there is still enough in the original movie plus Horsley's handbook to last a lifetime. For these readers, of course, being the "unofficial Handbook" would make it the only handbook worth considering - for any "official" handbook could be no more than a mouthpiece for the system itself.

Then there is the readership that sees the book and ignores it - because it is clearly all about a film they have not seen and may not want to see. Particularly in the case of a Pagan/Magick/New Age reader I say this is unfortunate, because the book is about much more than The Matrix. It is also a very neat re-interpretation of shamanic and martial arts "warrior" principles for the twenty-first century. Taking the works of Carlos Castenada in particular, Horsley has synthesised the teachings with the language of cyberspace to define "The Way of the CyberWarrior". Despite frequent allusions to the movie, the effect is not confusing to the uninitiated - if anything it makes one want to get the DVD and watch it.

The third class of reader is someone, like myself, who enjoyed and was stimulated by the original movie but did not bother much with the subsequent cash-in sequels. An admirer, but not an all-out fan. Such a reader might be put off by the subtitle "The Unofficial Handbook", preferring the real thing, wanting to know what the Wachowski brothers themselves put into the movie rather than the opinions of some outsider who clearly failed to win official recognition for his book. Ironically, such a reader has most of all to gain from it.

What could any "official" handbook do but tell you more of what the film was meant to convey but failed to do? Like the extras added to the DVD of a classic film, do they really add to the original artistic experience of the film, or do they simply `explain away' by contextualising the magic? Instead of that we have an exploration by someone who is clearly a fan of the film, but outside of its circle of creators. As he explains at the end of the book "When I started this exegesis I was willing to entertain the possibility that the Neo-phytes were right and everything in the movie was true. Now that I've completed the work, there seems no way back, no way to tell myself that, after all, the Matrix is just a highly ingenious movie..." So he begins with entertaining an idea, and ends up in a whole new place with no turning back - writing the book has become his own demonstration of taking the movie's red pill.

As he goes on "The Matrix is simply the latest artefact in a timeless process of myth-making by which humanity is shown to be ensconced in a truly diabolic situation, the nature of which entails our complete ignorance of the fact." In this Horsley is mistaken, for the Matrix is not the latest artefact in this process, for his own book has arrived after it. Here indeed we have the most challenging and fundamental role of all: the book need not even be a course of instruction for the warrior of the twenty-first century but a demonstration of anyone's power to transform reality by thinking about and around it. As such this book does not need the film any more, or any less, than an adult human needs its mother. The myth evolves.

From Publishers Weekly
While Janowitz is famous for her 1986 bestseller Slaves of New York, she's published widely since then—in everything from Vogue to Modern Ferret—and has revised many pieces for this anthology. Apart from the first selection, a horrifying description of having a miscarriage in a toilet at the Museum of Modern Art, most are in the E.B. White mode: witty vignettes on life in New York. Since adopting Chinese babies isn't uncommon in the world of modern Manhattanites, it's not surprising when Janowitz describes the trip she and her husband took to Heifei to adopt. Janowitz's description of her incompetence as a new mom has an almost Marx Brothers quality, as she details their baby fighting a diaper change "like a wounded fox in a leg-hold trap." Her essays on animals and pets are characteristically contrarian. She prefers "timid, feeble, neurotic, snappish, picky, babyish" dogs, but finds the Prospect Park Zoo's kangaroo no more interesting than a "gigantic rabbit." Apart from crotchety lapdogs, Janowitz loves food (oozing pizza, pounds of chocolate, doughnuts, steaks, etc.), although she doesn't enjoy elegant hors d'oeuvres at lavish receptions—after all, isn't eating "basically a solitary pleasure"? "The '80s died in Manhattan in 1987, along with Andy Warhol," she writes. But Janowitz herself, older and more self-critical, is still going strong.

From Booklist
Janowitz's caustic wit, her taste for the sordid and the absurd, and her knack for skewering the fashionable and championing the clueless are as vividly present in her pithy nonfiction as they are in her spiky novels, which include A Certain Age (1999) and Peyton Amber (2003). This robust essay collection spans the past two decades and forms a montagelike self-portrait and a sharp critique of urban life. But will the reader get past the jarring opening essay, a deadpan and graphic account of her suffering a miscarriage at the Museum of Modern Art? This rough start does establish Janowitz's sanguinary tendencies, and things get far more engaging once she offers curmudgeonly yet affectionate tales about her adopted Chinese daughter and cops to her penchant for wearing bizarre outfits and her fondness for tiny, high-strung dogs. Janowitz is at her mordant best when she chronicles the spectrum of New York life, from her crummy neighborhood grocery and the fringes of Prospect Park to decadent promotional events and her hilarious escapades with Andy Warhol and their blind date club. Never correct or polite, Janowitz is sharply observant, bracingly frank, wryly skeptical, and fully aware of the deeper issues at stake, from the devaluing of art to homelessness to the precarious state of the environment. mostly superficial
By Mr. Richard K. Weems
I haven't seen any of Janowitz's writing since Slaves of New York was first in paprback. This is a book I still refer myself back to now and then for some of its best stories ("You and the Boss" and "Kurt and Natasha: A Relationship" come to mind), but this book was followed with the quickly faultering and ultimately bland novel A Cannibal in Manhattan. But the bright spots of Slaves show that there is great promise for Janowitz's work--she does have a sensible way of handling absurdity, and at her best she puts even the most absurd situations in a wonderfully accesible light. This, of course, would seem to be one of the main drives of absurdity--to make even the most fantastic situation sympathetic because it ultimately touches something innately human, something that we could always learn or re-experience.

But when Janowitz goes wrong, the human element goes away, and one is left with a bizarre string of details that do little more than delight in being strange, but with little meaningful appeal. Unfortunately, this may be what Janowitz most enjoys. I saw her read with Howard Mohr, and a good part of her reading involved presenting slides of strange people that she knew in NYC. It was at least a little arrogant, more than a little egocentric, and ultimately carried little interest except for those who already thought that NYC was something of a circus, and here was a ringmaster giving them exactly what they wanted.

This experience was pretty much the same I had when reading this book. In her collection of essays and almost diary-like experiences of NYC, Janowitz presents a host of characters, and mostly herself, but often in such short doses that most of the pieces in here feel like journal entries, but with little attraction beyond the personal or the already-in-the-know. As in the reading, I felt that many of these pieces only held appeal for those already interested or curious about NYC, or maybe those in the NYC clique who can revel in inside jokes or things that remind them of what they already know. Lucky for Janowitz, she has chosen a rather large clique to address, rather than the Rotary Club in Wichita, KS, for example, but too many of these pieces feel horribly underdeveloped and only out to point out oddities in the world, but not out to make them sympathetic. There are some moments of great humor, but they don't sustain, and moreso are defused through extended efforts to make her dogs funny, or her family life.

The biggest disappointment through this was the bravado and arrogance that played subtly throughout this. Granted, Janowitz is rather open about very personal experiences, but it is also laced with an egotism that becomes more apparent in other moments. This is probably when drove my interest out of the book quite quickly.

In all, I found myself lightly curious, but hardly engaged.

And 718!
By Ayun Halliday
Having slogged through several VERY IMPORTANT and no doubt much book clubbed novels of the sort where a trio of southern ladies is glimpsed baking their baked goods while dancing to the Shirelles, it was like taking off a girdle to read these short pieces. Even when certain key points are repeated, belying a sort of publishing house sloppiness, I didn't mind - I'm all for Tama making a buck without having to rework old material that still rings fresh and funny.

Make that very very very funny - and I was gratified that Brooklyn, despite the title, loomed so large. Dang, I should have moved here in the early 80s!

It seemed like a cool book when i was flipping through it, but upon reading it... it didn't seem so great (all the sexual postions seemed like the stuff I was doing in the seventh grade) so don't buy it with the expectations of turning into a human pretzel with your lover...

I glanced at this book, it seems like a history book. It does talk about some postitions, but i suppose anyone could have figured out the ones it talks about. In my opinion Ultimate Gay Sex is a better book. Not only does UGS talk about postions (and leaves out the history... yuck!) UGS talks about relationsips, positons, protection, and contracted deasises and their symptoms.... hope this helps!

Interesting Read
By William Sharpless
When I purchased the book, I was interested in seeing how the original Kama Sutra would be applied to the "technicalities" specific to gay men. While reading the book, at times it seemed more like a history lesson and stereo instructions for some common sense things. That being said; the artwork in the book is very intriguing. It is very tastefully presented. Over all, an fun addition to the "coffee table" book collection.

The people in gay bars on Christmas Day are so desperate for basic human contact that they'd go home with a Doc Marten shoe if it made a move, and maybe even if it didn't.

So begins the story of Cameron Dodds, a disenfranchised writer who visits gay bars on Christmas and works at a Salvation Army Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center in order to steal the stories of the people he meets there. But when Cameron finds a patient hanged in the utilities closet, his infatuation with other people's stories becomes an obsession. Assuming the man's identity, Cameron seeks out and forges a relationship with the victim's mentally challenged sister, who lives in a home uptown. As Cameron becomes more involved in the woman's life, he begins to discover truths that will challenge him to the very core of his existence.

Theft runs on parallel tracks as 30-year-old unsuccessful writer Cameron "steals" the stories of people he encounters at his job in the "Sally Ann" (i.e., Salvation Army) Treatment Center. He "takes" the identity of cokehead Darrel, a patient at the Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center, when the addict commits suicide. He also takes to visiting Darrel's retarded older sister, June Greene, who has mosaic Down syndrome with complications of Becker's muscular dystrophy and has been taken care of for more than 16 years by the Sisters Who Gave Good Hope. "Darrel" develops a relationship with June and strikes a deal with the administrator, who lets him examine June's medical records, which he mines for story material. Cameron's resulting "Three River Stories" and incidental e-mails are set in a different font from that of the main narrative, which enhances this ironic, acerbic, and poignant novel's sense of shifting planes of reality. In short, terse sentences and equally compact chapters, Greer tells a compelling tale of identity theft. Whitney Scott

Review

“Mordant, hilarious, and unsparing, Still Life with June is a scourge and blessing both. Reminiscent of Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer, Knut Hamsun's Hunger, or Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground, but in a category of its own; if any school for it exists, it's the school of its own daring and invention.” ―Andrew Lewis Conn, author of P: A Novel

“It is a gift of humanity and storytelling that makes Darren Greer's experimental new novel a triumphant success. Still Life with June is a remarkable book, reminiscent of Catcher in the Rye, Fight Club, and Bright Lights, Big City. It's a striking, compelling narrative with a style so inventive and innovative as to be a new form.” ―Eric Shaw Quinn, author of Say Uncle

“A novel with edge and energy, astounding style and substance to spare.” ―Richard Labonté, editor of Best Gay Erotica

“Still Life with June is a compelling novel, and Darren Greer a writer we'll be hearing from.” ―Ralph Keyes, author of The Post-Truth Era

Haunting and exquisite
By Erin Klee
Still Life with June is a rare and haunting novel that deserves to be read at least twice.

Stylistically, Still Life is brilliant, juxtaposing textual fragments written in distinctly different voices. Greer achieves ambiguity through calculated precision as his plot and characterization shift between realities.

The text is often confessional, with the protagonist sharing everything from seemingly-insignificant details to the most intimate revelations. The result is a protagonist so realistic that I sometimes forgot he was fictional, feeling implicated by my own voyeuristic presence.

Grafting beauty onto pain, Greer creates a world as enticing as it is disturbing. Intelligent, hilarious and profound, Still Life is a novel to savor.

Hey, you...
By Nathon T.
Yes, you, person who is wondering if you want to read this book, or person who has read it and is now in the process of reviewing it (did you like it?), don't hesitate on this one. It's a very compelling read. The main character comes to life. He's real. He's honest. I felt like him. I wonder if Darren Greer wrote this as semi-autobiographical. The main character seemed to be too real to be fictional, though. But that's okay. I really enjoyed seeing everything through his eyes, considering that both of us are gay writers. And the whole idea of everyone either knowing or not knowing they were a loser humored me.

It's been at least an hour since I finished the book. I'm thinking about it. When I think about a book after it's done, that means it's good, even excellent. It hit me on some kind of metaphysical level.

Original and Arresting
By Rialta
This is one of the best novels I have read in years. It is utterly original, with something unexpected happening on practically every page. The author has written it in a fully unusual style, with short chapters, sometimes only a sentence or two, stories within stories, and lists. And the ending is terrific. Buy this book. You won't regret it.

Blood and Champagne: The Life and Times of Robert Capa, by Alex Kershaw

Robert Capa was arguably the finest photojournalist of the twentieth century and without doubt its greatest combat photographer-he covered every major conflict from the Spanish Civil War to the beginnings of Vietnam. An inveterate gambler who coined the dictum "if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," Capa risked his life again and again, most dramatically as the only photographer landing with the first wave on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and he created some of the most enduring images ever made with a camera.

But the drama in Capa's life wasn't limited to one side of the lens. Born in Budapest as Andre Freidman, Capa fled political repression and anti-Semitism as a teenager by escaping to Berlin, where he first picked up a Leica and then witnessed the rise of Hitler. By the time his images of D-Day appeared in Life Magazine, he had become a legend, the first photographer to make his calling appear glamorous and sexy, and the model for many of the most intrepid photographers to this day. In 1947, after a decade covering war, he founded a cooperative agency-Magnum-and in the process revolutionized the industry. For the first time, photographers would retain their own copyrights and negatives, and nearly half a century later, Magnum remains the most prestigious agency of its kind.

By the time he died, at just forty-one in 1954, Capa was not only the greatest adventurer in photographic history. He had become a colleague and confidant to writers Irwin Shaw, John Steinbeck, and Ernest Hemingway and director John Huston, and a seducer of several of his era's most alluring icons, including Ingrid Bergman.

From Budapest in the twenties to Paris in the thirties, from post-war Hollywood to Stalin's Russia, and from New York in the fifties to Indochina, Blood and Champagne is a wonderfully evocative account of Capa's life and times. Based on extensive interviews with Capa's friends and contemporaries, as well as FBI and Soviet files and other previously unpublished materials, Alex Kershaw's biography is every bit as compelling as its charismatic subject.

Amazon.com Review
"It does seem to me that Capa has proved beyond all doubt that the camera need not be a cold mechanical device," John Steinbeck wrote of photojournalist Robert Capa in a quote that launches this well-written, exhaustively researched biography. "Like the pen, it is as good as the man who uses it. It can be the extension of mind and heart." That’s quite a compliment coming from an author like Steinbeck, but then Capa won the respect and friendship of some of the brightest talents of his generation; other admirers and poker buddies included Ernest Hemingway and John Huston, and among his many loves was actress Ingrid Bergman. Capa won fame slogging through the blood and grime to capture vivid images of five different wars, from the Spanish Civil War (where he wasn't above staging some of his photographs), through the landings at Omaha Beach on D-Day (which he chronicled for Life magazine as the only journalist to wade ashore with the first wave of G.I.s), to the early days of the Vietnam conflict (where he was killed in action at the age of 41 while covering the French army, soon to be replaced with disastrous results by the Americans). Born a Hungarian Jew named André Friedmann, another great writer, John Hersey, famously dubbed the swarthy chain-smoking photographer "the Man Who Invented Himself," and author Alex Kershaw contends that one of his greatest achievements was the legend that he created for himself. A California journalist who contributes to The Guardian and The Sunday Times Magazine, among others, Kershaw brings Capa and his times to life with bright, vivid writing and telling anecdotes, using a fascinating personal odyssey to put the man's professional accomplishments in perspective. "Capa was the first photographer to make photojournalism appear glamorous and sexy," he writes. Of course, that distinction and all others take a back seat to the photos themselves, and this book’s only shortcoming is that it does not include any examples of the great man’s work.--Jim DeRogatis

From Publishers Weekly
Robert Capa was the archetype of the intrepid war photographer. Asserting that "if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," Capa braved combat in the Spanish Civil War, hit Omaha Beach in the first wave on D-Day, and jumped behind German lines with American paratroopers, returning with visceral pictures-like the famous (and possibly staged) "falling soldier" photo of a Spanish Republican militiaman who had just been shot-that defined our idea of what modern war looks like. "Profligate, passionate, impulsive," Capa was a ladies' man who liked nice togs, hobnobbed with the rich and famous, got caught up in anti-Fascist and Popular Front politics, and played poker compulsively when he was not risking his life in combat-in other words, he practically invented the persona of the celebrity photojournalist. He also co-founded the pioneering Magnum photo agency, which gave freelance photographers ownership and control of their photos. Journalist Kershaw gives an engrossing account of Capa's impossibly romantic life, elegantly evoking both the horror of the front lines and the glamour of wartime Madrid, London and Paris, where Capa befriended the likes of Ernest Hemingway and romanced the likes of Ingrid Bergman. Packed with arresting anecdotes and character studies, Kershaw's biography is a worthy companion to Capa's work. Photos.

From The New Yorker
André Friedmann, a.k.a. Robert Capa, war photographer, bon vivant, and co-founder of Magnum, the legendary photo agency, remains the archetype of the committed photojournalist, risking his life to capture indelible images of the Spanish Civil War, Japan's invasion of China, Second World War battles in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, and Israel's war for independence. A Hungarian refugee who arrived in Paris in 1933, Capa transformed himself into a charming, caustic adventurer, a high-stakes gambler who left behind a heartbroken trail of beautiful women (including Ingrid Bergman). Kershaw is sympathetic, but by no means blind to his subject's technical, personal, and occasionally ethical limitations, and he conscientiously corrects the romantic embellishments that Capa made to his life story. No matter who tells it, there's a haunting inevitability to the story's end, when, in 1954, Capa finally runs out of luck—at the age of forty, the first American correspondent to die in Indochina.

It's okay
By A photographer
Capa is one of the romantic characters of journalism, a free spirit with an insatiable appetite for risk-taking, alcohol, cigarettes and women. That he died at age 40 in the line of duty as a war photographer has only embellished his image. These are the facts we have known about Capa for decades, reported nicely in Whelan's biography in the 1980's. This book doesn't expand on this information very much.

If you leave out the sections about the famous women he bedded, this would be a much shorter book. It's tawdry in that regard but that does keep the book rolling along. Overall, it's not a bad biography of Capa. It does seem to me to borrow heavily from Whelan's biography and from Capa's own book "Slightly Out Of Focus". If you're familiar with those books, there are no new revelations here.

I do take issue with one small point. Capa is constantly referred to as having Leicas dangling around his neck, using Leicas on assignments and holding Leicas. While I do not doubt Capa used Leicas--along with other brands of cameras--during his career, Kershaw's repeated references are tedious. This is especially true when one considers that Capa is closely identified with the now defunct 35mm Zeiss Contax, he used Contax cameras during the D-Day invasion and he was using Contax cameras at the time of his death in Indochina in 1954. In fact, the two photographs in Kershaw's book that show Capa with a camera "dangling around his neck" actually show him with Contax cameras, not Leicas.

That small point is indeed small, however, it begs the question of how correct the other information might be. Of course biographies are often based on hearsay and ancedotal information, the veracity of which is open to interpretation. Maybe Kershaw was just invoking creative license and using Leica as metaphor. It's not a point any non-photographer reader would even notice. Still, I find it a little troubling.

Overall, this is a decent but derivative sketch of Capa.

superb - the best account yet
By A Customer
A great, cinematic read - a shame that the estate did not allow photographs, but they never will. Yet this book is so vivid and esxciting that you don't notice the images not being there - you see them in your head. Really tremendous research, so much more objective than the authorized hagiographer Whelan's account, and this will one day be a movie - it just feels so right. A great, great tale told very well by Kershaw. Best bio on a photographer ever written.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS
By A Customer
This book is a story, told to be thrilling and informative and will stand the test of time as the best book written about the trade of war photography. It should be a film because the action and character development are well plotted. And if you want to know, close up, about the great moments of the last century, then here is a ring-side seat on history in the making too. Inspiring stuff. If only there were more biographies written like this.

Amazon.com Review
"The magic key to health, happiness, and romance is waiting for you in your local health food store," says relationship guru John Gray, Ph.D. Not only do men and women have different communication and love styles, they gain and lose weight differently and need different diets, asserts Gray, author of the bestselling Mars and Venus series. Though he does not have credentials in exercise, nutrition, or weight management, Gray creates a program that, he claims, balances each gender's brain chemistry, resulting in health, weight loss, stress management, and romance.

Gray analyzes the specific brain chemicals, hormones, and reactions to stress that affect men and women differently and influence relationships. He recommends an eating plan involving at least three meals a day; replacing breakfast with a low-calorie, nutritious breakfast shake; taking amino acid supplements; drinking "cleansing nutrients"; and avoiding junk food. The exercise prescription is only seven pages long (out of 314), consisting of his "bounce, shake, breathe, and flex" program. This may stimulate brain chemicals, but it doesn't do much for cardiovascular or muscle conditioning. Gray seems more concerned with avoiding getting too much exercise than getting enough or the right kind (according to exercise professionals). --Joan Price

From AudioFile
This excellent abridgment is about how brain chemistry influences men and women in life functioning and relationships. Dopamine deficiency in men can cause emotional withdrawal, romantic withholding, excessive or deficient energy, addictive behavior, and even infidelity. In women, low seratonin levels affect productivity, energy, self-esteem, and physical vitality. These and many other biochemicals that we can control in ourselves impact the quality and intensity of our love relationships. Gray is one of our most concise and clear teachers of all things human, and in this audio he's created a superb balance of up-to-date research and a warm, positive approach to functioning better. An indispensable resource for people looking to retool their health habits or love lives. T.W. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Frustrating and Enlightening
By Rebecca of Amazon
"Without a nutritious diet, we don't have the fuel to make more endophins." ~ pg. 102

If any book can be frustrating and enlightening at the same time it is "The Mars & Venus Diet and Exercise Solution." This book is filled to the brim with interesting information on dopamine, serotonin, testosterone and endorphins. You will learn about the top forty serotonin-producing foods and how to get endorphins to release into your body. There is also a good amount of information on how to make your relationships work. There seems to be a biological basis for everything John Gray has been teaching for years. He explains why women are obsessed with giving too much and how to get men to give more. It is logical and makes complete sense. He also gives some of the real reasons marriages fail. I thought some of the information was very interesting, especially about why men may become workaholics:

"By increasing mental stress by taking on too much work (deadlines and long hours), men in particular stimulate the production of endorphins to reduce mental distress and anxieties temporarily." ~ pg. 103

While this is very helpful and intellectually exciting, I think the actual diet can be confusing. In the section on following the Mars & Venus diet I came across many frustrating things. Each morning you are supposed to drink a glass of water enriched with lemon juice, honey, trace minerals and aloe vera juice. This drink is also taken after you exercise in the morning. That means you are taking minerals twice. The problem I see with this is that you are also taking trace minerals with your morning health shake. (This drink is also recommended for fasting - should you take that many minerals in a day?)

My main question really is: "Is it necessary to take so many trace minerals?" The morning shake is made with a number of ingredients that can also be found in the Mars & Venus Superfoods Shake. In fact, you can skip mixing up the shake from scratch and just purchase the shake online. My problem with the shake is that it contains blanched almond meal and I'm allergic to nuts in general.

I looked up the Isagenix products and read the lists of ingredients. There are three products you could buy even though John Gray also says you can find other brands (he doesn't mention which ones so I'll give you that information).

The products you can buy (at the Isagenix website) include the Mars & Venus Superfoods Shake ($45), the Super Cleanse ($30) and the Super Minerals (also contains lithium - $30). So you can get the entire program for under $105.

Some options for the same types of products (Total is $131 with the optional cleanse) include "Nature's Plus Spiru-tein Tangerine Dream (Nature's Plus - Tangerine Dream Spirutein Shake 1Lb - $18)" which I've taken for years (compare ingredients to the Mars & Venus Superfoods shake) and the addition of Omega 3 Fatty Acid capsules (Nordic Naturals - Complete Omega/Lemon, 1000 mg, 60 softgels - $17). If you want to add in Yucca try Solaray - Yucca - 100 Capsule - 490 mg - $6.

This is easier than making the shake and adding in flax seeds, protein powder, yucca, enzymes etc. If price is a factor then you can see the difference in price. However, I read the ingredients on the Mars & Venus Super Cleanse and found it is not as good a product as Dr. Natura's Cleansing Product Colonix - Internal Cleansing Program (Liver, Kidney, Colon, And Parasite Cleanse) - FREE UPGRADE TO EXPEDITED SHIPPING - $90). The thing to note about the Dr. Natura program is that the "Paranil" product has wormwood. This is not good to take for an extended period of time. The "Colonix" is a good cleanse on its own.

Once you read the book you can then use these ideas to your advantage. The ingredients recommended will optimize brain chemistry and this will make you feel better. I've been taking a shake with amino acids for years now and it does make you feel more healthy. The Nature's Plus Spiru-tein Tangerine Dream (or other flavors) is an excellent product that contains most of the ingredients (just take Yucca and Omega 3 capsules as well) in the Mars & Venus Shake.

To finish the book, John Gray also briefly discusses the benefits of aromatherapy. He also talks about spirituality and how dietary changes can even cause cancer to go into remission.

Overall I think this book is very enlightening. The frustrating part can be easily solved by buying the shakes in powder form. There just doesn't seem to be enough information to make the program work when mixing up the drink at home. I found that section to be very frustrating because no exact measurements were given.

I've done what he says and it's PURE GOLD!
By Paul Green
I've only skimmed his other books, so I can't say I was a fan of the Mars/Venus books, but THIS book has changed my life! If you're trying to lose weight and detoxify your system and are looking for a deeper understanding of the different ways men and women need to exercise, eat, and lose weight, this is for you.
I have found that by following Gray's nutritional ideas, I have turned my health around, mentally, physically, and in my relationship with my wife. I lost 9 pounds in the first 3 days safely, never felt sick or hungry, and feel sure I'll be able to keep the weight off and maintain my health, using the simple maintenance plan in the book. My wife says I've changed for the better, too: I'm calmer, sleep great, have quit snoring, and am well on my way to losing the 30 pounds that seem to have glommed onto me out of nowhere after I hit my mid 40's. I just couldn't get rid of the weight. I haven't yet tried the Bounce & Shake exercise and plan to, but I believe it's important to do mild aerobic and weight bearing exercise to remove toxins and build lean mass. I walk and do the Five Tibetan Rites, both of which Gray endorses.
I have used the Isagenix products with great success. I feel the cost is reasonable, less than if I took the time to put it all together from scratch. They are unique in their safety, formulation, and speed. My experience with delivery was fine: It took one week to get the product to northern CA from their Phoenix plant.
Gray's personal story is compelling, as is his reasoning about brain chemistry and its link to diet, exercise, and experiences of relationship. I highly recommend the book.

Killer Instinct, by Joseph Finder

Jason Steadman is a thirty-year-old sales executive living in Boston and working for a electronics giant, a competitor to Sony and Panasonic. He's a witty, charismatic guy who's well liked at the office, but he lacks the "killer instinct" necessary to move up the corporate ladder. To the chagrin of his ambitious wife, it looks as if his career has hit a ceiling. Jason's been sidelined.
But all that will change one evening when Jason meets Kurt Semko, a former Special Forces officer just back from Iraq. Looking for a decent pitcher for the company softball team, Jason gets Kurt, who was once drafted by the majors, a job in Corporate Security. Soon, good things start to happen for Jason - and bad things start to happen to Jason's rivals. His career suddenly takes off. He's an overnight success
Only too late does Jason discover that his friend Kurt has been secretly paving his path to the top by the most "efficient" - and ruthless - means available. After all, Kurt says, "Business is war, right?"
But when Jason tries to put a stop to it, he finds that his new best friend has become the most dangerous enemy imaginable. And now it's far more than just his career that lies in the balance.
A riveting tale of ambition, intrigue, and the price of success, Killer Instinct is Joseph Finder at his best.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. At the start of this masterful business thriller from bestseller Finder (Paranoia; Company Man), Jason Steadman, successful salesman at Entronics, an electronics company that's right up there with Sony and Panasonic, drives into a ditch near his office outside Boston while talking to his wife on his cellphone. Jason befriends the tow-truck driver who comes to his rescue, Kurt Semko, an ex–Special Forces soldier, and recommends him for a position at Entronics. In gratitude, Kurt begins performing fiendish little jobs for Jason that boost his sales and fortunes with the company. But Kurt eventually goes overboard, and people begin to die. The likable Jason finds himself trapped in a battle with a scary, seemingly unbeatable foe that builds to a rousing and satisfying climax. The villains may verge on the cartoonish, but readers who enjoy movies where you have to fight the urge to shout "Stop! Don't open that door!" will love this one.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Both Paranoia (2003) and Company Man (2005) captured the power plays implicit in the business world and put Joseph Finder at the top of the corporate thriller game. Killer Instinct doesn't disappoint. Finder, who convincingly portrays how salesmen close the deal in a cutthroat environment, focuses on character development: Steadman's wife, for example, is no Lady Macbeth but an empathetic character. Although the plot never suffers, a few reviewers called it more predictable and less intricately conceived than those of Finder's other books. Despite this criticism, Killer Instinct shows that "political thrillers and spy novels are tame compared to what goes on in the cubicles and offices" (South Florida Sun-Sentinel).

From Booklist
Finder writes a special brand of business-world thriller one might call Dilbert noir. His previous best-sellers, including Paranoia (2003) and Company Man (2005), spliced corporate cubicle routines with murderous plots and international intrigue. In his latest, Finder takes a man least likely to swim with the sharks--Jason Steadman, a very happy, contented salesman for an electronics giant--and places him on Fortune's wheel. The first spin of the wheel comes from Steadman's wife, a lovely Lady Macbeth type consumed with ambition for a picture-book family and a much bigger house. The next spin comes from a car accident that ends up with Steadman meeting a tow-truck driver, a special forces officer recently returned from Iraq. Steadman takes a liking to this man's man and gets him hired in his firm's corporate security department. Suddenly and inexplicably (to Steadman), his career skyrockets as his rivals experience a run of bad luck and even worse accidents. Part of the dreadful fun of this thriller is figuring out ahead of Steadman who is behind his good fortune; the rest of the suspense comes from watching Steadman seek to outwit his malevolent benefactor. Finder is a first-rate story weaver, though he sometimes lavishes too much detail on unnecessary scenes or bits of dialogue. Still, Steadman's 10-month ride from complacency to terror is filled with the requisite number of thrills and chills. Connie Fletcher

Instincts to Pick Up Finder Novels Are Always Spot On!
By James N Simpson
Killer Instinct, although not as fast paced a thriller as Paranoia or Company Man and to be honest not in the same masterpiece quality league as those novels nevertheless is still a great read.

In Killer Instinct, Jason Steadman lives a highly stressful corporate life in the fast paced area of sales in one of the world's major TV and other electronic appliance suppliers. Job security is a big issue, his boss treats him like a doormat as well as steals his ideas and there are rumours going around that the Tokyo owners will soon decide if they are to be shipped to Dallas, which his pregnant wife refuses to contemplate or closed down all together when merged with other acquisitions. Stressed out and driving while talking on his mobile phone he looses control and his badly damaged car needs to be towed. Having nothing in common with Kurk the tow truck driver on the long ride to the garage, who is a dishonourably discharged Iraq/Afghanistan serving special forces soldier, he comments on a baseball game call and soon discovers they share a passion for the game. Jason's company softball team is terrible so he invites the driver to come along and as they become better friends Jason helps the poor guy out and gets him a job in security in the company. Kurk tells him he never forgets a favour and soon every hurdle the Jason whinges about seems to miraculously turn around in his favour. Soon Jason's rivals suspect Jason is responsible and when he confronts Kurk he realises he can only have Kurk as either a loyal brutally helpful friend or a deadly enemy.

A must read and if you haven't already done so also check out Paranoia and Company Man as well.

His Wife Doesn't Understand Him
By Dr. Jane Branam
I read this book on a cruise and it is a book that will definitely take you away from all your problems, because believe me, compared to our hero, you have no problems! I identified with Jason because I have been in a relationship like he had with his wife Kate, where nothing you do is quite ever good enough. Jason tries to please everyone in his life except himself and totally twists his life to try and become a successful corporate man. If you are in business or just want to escape for a while, this book is a definite must-read thriller. Power Path to Love
