The First Wife: A Novel of Suspense, by Diana Diamond

For readers of Olivia Goldsmith and Mary Jane Clark comes a dramatic - and sensational - new thriller with twists and turns at every corner and a chilling shock-surprise of an ending.

Jane Warren swore she'd never marry again. Sure, age isn't a problem. Neither are her looks. Heaven knows that plenty of perfectly respectable men would consider themselves lucky to end up with someone like her. Then again, the last perfectly respectable man to end up with her - her ex-husband - ended their marriage, not to mention Jane's belief in happy endings...

But she just can't muster the cynicism to resist William Andrews - a dashing, debonair widower with two children of his own. Soon, Jane's doing what she swore she'd never do: Marching down the aisle, promising to have, hold, serve, and protect, 'til death do them part. But why does Andrew seem so obsessed with his dead wife? And why do the children seem to hate Jane so passionately?

As Jane struggles to understand the nature of the powerful hold Andrews's first wife still exerts over the husband and children she left behind, her day-to-day life grows increasingly more dangerous. During a family outing, she is suddenly thrown violently from her horse. Had someone deliberately spooked the horse? As she takes a midnight swim, the mechanical dome over the pool closes on her. Did it short circuit, or was it sabotage? Are these just coincidences, or are the stakes and risks getting higher the closer Jane gets to the truth? Someone would clearly like to see her follow the first Mrs. Andrews to the grave. Why?

In a thriller that moves from New York to Paris to the Caribbean, a plot filled with relentless suspense, and a witty and intelligent heroine worth cheering for, this latest from Diana Diamond is her best yet, an unputdownable romance of deadly proportions.

From Publishers Weekly
Pseudonymous Diamond's (The Good Sister, etc.) updated version of Daphne du Maurier's classic Rebecca offers a savvy heroine (divorced business reporter Jane Warren), a widowed media mogul (globe-trotting power broker William Andrews) and a famous socialite first wife brutally murdered eight years before in her posh Adirondack lodge. Like the original, this romantic thriller begins with the whirlwind courtship of a down-to-earth younger woman by a wealthy older man, as Andrews whisks Jane off to Paris while she tries to interview him for a profile she's writing. Diamond enlivens the familiar story line with modern touches: instead of a loafing cousin, she introduces Jane's hapless playwright ex; instead of an English country estate, she features a New Jersey horse farm, a Manhattan penthouse apartment and, of course, the Adirondack lodge. She also adds two children from Andrews's previous marriage. Such twists on the 1938 original add to the reader's delight: how will the modern heroine handle the old-fashioned mystery? How will the old-fashioned hero handle the modern heroine? And who is the villainous Mrs. Danvers, and what will she do next? Even when presenting details about sex, business and a catered wedding that would make du Maurier blush, Diamond never forgets that the story's appeal lies in the heroine's frequently failed attempts to understand the hold the first wife keeps over a husband who otherwise looks too good to be true. Without pretense and with energy to spare, Diamond builds excitement through a series of inevitable yet still somehow surprising scenes, making her fresh take on an old classic not great literature but very good entertainment.

Confused in NJ...
By DevJohn01
I have to admit that this book left me more than a little bit confused. The description they give this book is that it is about a woman who gets swept off her feet by one of the richest men in the world. The reader gets the impression that they have a whirlwind romance, fall madly in love and finally marry only to have the husbands past come back to haunt him in the form of his dead wife. However, in actually reading this book that did not seem to be the case, there was no whirlwind romance. In fact the romance part was very flat. Jane, the heroine of `THE FIRST WIFE', went out on a total of two and a half mediocre dates (on one of which she was almost killed) with the powerful William Andrews before she agreed to marry him. She clearly did not want to marry this man, even rehearsed her speech on how to let him down easily when all of a sudden she decided to say yes. She debated everyday whether or not she actually loved Andrews all the while keeping up an investigation into his first wife's murder (which she believed was at the hand of her betrothed) and having way too many suspicious brushes with death. Moreover, Jane finds evidence of an on going affair between William and another woman. Now my question is, who in their right mind would enter into this marriage and why? Had Jane been only after Andrews money this story would have been a bit more believable, however Diamond painted Jane to be a woman of high morality who despite all of these "obstacles" began to genuinely fall in love with her fiancé. Diana Diamond is a pseudonym for a male mystery writer, which you can clearly tell in `THE FIRST WIFE'. I believe that a woman would have fleshed out the romance a bit and made the decision on whether or not to marry William Andrews a no-brainer for Jane and for the reader.

Also, it didn't seem as though Andrews was obsessed with the death of his first wife, as stated in the description. It was more like Jane who was obsessed with investigating the details of the first wife's life and her death. Which, of course, only brought more trouble for her.

If you have read any of my other reviews of Diamonds books they have all, with the exception of `THE BABYSITTER' generated three stars. One may wonder, why do I keep reading her books if I only find them to be average? I read them because they are very easy to read, never boring and often times unintentionally funny. Definitely a break from some of the more serious mysteries.

juicy romantic suspense
By A Customer
Eight years ago, an intruder burst into the home of William Andrews; the thug killed his wife Kay and almost William too. The perpetrator was never caught and Bill spent the next few years building up his empire to the point where he became one of the most powerful men in the world. He never was serious about any woman until he read the articles about him written by Jane Warren who painted him in unflattering light.
Bill buys the newspaper that employs Jane and arranges for her to interview her new boss. Jane thought he would fire her but after a rough start there relationship turns romantic and he asks her to marry him. After she says yes the "accidents" start. Jane believes someone is trying to kill her. She thinks it has to do with Kay's death and the woman in Paris who William remits a monthly sum. William doesn't confide in his fiancée, but Jane digs and the deeper she gets, the more desperate the perpetrator is to get her out of Bill's life permanently.
Diana Diamond writes a juicy romantic suspense novel that demonstrates the power that the rich and powerful yield. The heroine thinks her own husband is a suspect in the attempts on her life but there are plenty of other people who would like her dead because she is a threat to them. All Jane's troubles go back to THE FIRST WIFE and she intends to uncover the secrets her husband is hiding or die trying (which she almost does). This is a must read for fans who like action, romance and intrigue in the tradition of Jackie Collins.

The First Wife is an exciting whodunit.
By N. Larrabee
J.J. Warren excels at being a hard-edged business reporter for the Southport News in Connecticut. She does not hold back when pursuing a topic and always goes for the tough questions. Her new boss is William Andrews, someone she "raked over the coals" in a recent set of scathing articles. Jane is sent by her editor into to the city to interview William Andrews. Anticipating the worst, Jane is determined to pursue the interview even if it means she has to follow Andrews to Paris and back in one day. Jane confronts William in Paris and tells him what she thinks of his behavior in ignoring her. William apologizes, and very soon thereafter pursues Jane. He acts quickly and convinces her to marry him. Jane cannot put her reporter instincts aside and wants to know what happened to Kay Harper, Andrews' first wife, who was killed in a tragic robbery eight years ago. She and William go to Paris together again once they are married, where William is on a supposed business trip. Jane wants to see what he does. Does he have a mistress in Paris? Accidents seem to happen to Jane left and right. She becomes suspicious of everyone around her, William's two kids Cassie and Craig, the housekeeper, even Bob Leavitt, William's right-hand man. Jane becomes convinced that William Andrews asked her to marry him to keep her quiet. The action escalates to the point that Jane goes back to ski chalet where the supposed robbery took place. The narrative is electrifying, keeping you in suspense of what will happen next, but the ending is written somewhat clumsily. All the action has been built up to a crescendo but does not get resolved in a satisfactory way.

What Happy People Know: How the New Science of Happiness Can Change Your Life for the Better, by Dan Baker, Cameron Stauth

Dr. Dan Baker, director of the Life Enhancement Program at Canyon Ranch, has devoted his life to teaching people how to be happy. And apparently, most of us could use a little tutoring. Research has shown that the root of unhappiness--fear--lies in the oldest, reptilian part of our brains, and negative reactions are often dictated by primal instincts. We're literally "hardwired for hard times." In What Happy People Know, Dr. Baker uses evidence from the new science of happiness to show us how we can overcome this genetic predisposition toward negative reactions and lead a truly rich, happy, and healthy life.

In this book, Dr. Baker shares the program that has revolutionized the lives of countless unhappy people, VIP's and regular Joes and Janes alike. First, you'll learn the only two issues that ever cause unhappiness and devise your plan to overcome both of them. Then, Dr. Baker teaches you how to spot the happiness traps, the five doomed ways we try to make ourselves happy, only to dig ourselves further into misery. Finally, he shares his happiness tools, the six simple skills that, when practiced consistently, will inevitably lead to greater optimism, courage, good humor, and fulfillment--in short, to happiness.

From Publishers Weekly
Baker, a psychologist and director of the Life Enhancement Program at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, offers a new way to look at unhappiness. He believes that people can teach themselves to be happy instead of remaining trapped in a vicious cycle of stress from work and family: "If you adopt management of your life as a primary goal, you'll be able to participate in your own destiny. But if you squander your energy struggling for complete control, you'll lose the reins of management and become just another leaf in the wind." It's essential for people to avoid such traps as trying to buy happiness or trying to find it through pleasure, Baker argues. Instead, people should use and take advantage of the six happiness tools-appreciation, choice, personal power, leading with strengths, language and stories, and multidimensional living. To demonstrate his strategy, the author offers various case studies. For example, one wealthy CEO comes for therapy, complaining about his children, wife and employees. Baker listens and offers just one piece of advice: he tells the man to visit a pediatric cancer ward; the visit allows the man to look beyond his self-centered complaints. Baker's advice is sound and his presentation engaging, but some readers, especially those coping with serious life crises, may find this approach too New Age or simplistic. He makes the transition from the traps to the tools of happiness sound easy, perhaps too much so.

What Happy People Know

We're literally "hardwired for hard times."

In What Happy People Know, Dr. Baker uses evidence from the new science of happiness to show us how we can overcome this genetic predisposition toward negative reactions and lead a truly rich, happy, and healthy life.

Maybe you're wishing for more--more money, more friends, more status--thinking that "more" itself will insulate you from fear, making you feel safer and therefore happier. But Dr. Baker's clinics have been filled with VIPs who are just as unhappy as the next guy--some even more so.

In What Happy People Know, Dr. Baker shares the program that has revolutionized the lives of countless unhappy people, VIPs and regular Joes and Janes alike. I have had this book for a long time and bought one for my sister. She has passed it around her work place with intrigue. She loved it! Thought how simple it explains how life can be so much more positive and alive when we make a choice to think differently! It is a great book and an easy read. Not complicated at all. Straightforward and insightful.

A book sure to make an impact on you
By C. Friend
This book was a real eye opener for me. I've read a good deal of "self-help" books and have found virtually none that pack the double whammy of useful information and very readable format. Dr. Baker's insight from both his clinical work and personal experience makes this book a very inspirational one to a reader that is trying to improve themselves and their life. This is not rocket science but rather a very common sense way to view life that, if applied, is sure to make a positive impact in a person's life. Since it does not appear that Dr. Baker has written anything else, I will likely read some of the authors Dr. Baker referenced in his book, Dr. Seligmann to name one. A book you won't be sorry you read.

One of the Best
By Diego Banducci
The real advantage to this guide, like The Best 361 Colleges, is that kids tend to read, if not devour, it. Since buying it for our two daughters, I have recommended it to several other parents, advising them just to leave it out, either on a living room table or in the bathroom (It makes great john reading). In all cases the kids have found it interesting, relevant and credible. Is it the final word? Not at all. But it does serve as a great starting point for kids to put together a list of schools in which they might be interested.

Good Guide but I was expecting more
By Lily
This was an OK guide to some colleges. Unfortunately, some of the schools my son is considering weren't in the book which was dissapointing. The infomation about the schools wasn't as in depth or "insider" as I had hoped. I found college sites on the web more helpful. I wouldn't have bought this book if I had known.

Not my favorite
By Amazon Customer
Overall, I wouldn't recommend the Insider's Guide to the Colleges to either parents or students. I feel that Fiske, Princeton Review and Kaplan (even though the last edition is becoming dated) are better sources of information.

However, there are some good aspects to the Insider's Guide so I would at least recommend picking up the book at the library and skimming the beginning section on choosing a college. Insider's does a good job of mentioning all the facets a student should consider and they do a very fair job of detailing the strengths and weaknesses of both small and large schools.

On the other hand, I have to agree with the reviewer who said that the entries make each school sound like either a "party school" or a "nerd school" as if colleges only came in two varieties. I think it quickly becomes very hard to distinguish individual qualities of the schools because so much emphasis is placed on the balance of partying to studying to the exclusion of other information, particularly about good academic reasons to attend a school. It's also apparent that Insider's is placing a little too much emphasis on sports when they discuss a school's croquet or handball program. Yep, that makes the school different, but it should be obvious to Insider's that there are other aspects of the school they should have focused on instead.

Now my writing is not the best, but I suppose I expected better from Yale students. One writer used the non-existent word "irregardless" (it's "regardless") while another couldn't be bothered to check if Stony Brook was one word or two. The writers sometimes delivered badly executed last paragraphs with incongruous sentences, poor transitions and confusing conclusions. You end up with something like "Students at X University say that the food is horrific, the dorms should be condemned and the school is less exciting than a cemetery. It's a great place to spend four years." Yes, I suppose it would be fair to give them a break since they're only undergraduates (I think), but I feel it's important to expose our high school kids to the superior writing found in other guides like Fiske or Princeton Review instead of something that's not very good.

This brings me to the Insider's Guide's assertion that the book is "funny and incredibly entertaining." While this is subjective, I strongly disagree. The Insider's Guide is fairly boring compared to the much wittier Princeton Review guide. Personally, my favorite is Fiske, but I would say that if a parent is having trouble getting her teenager to start looking at colleges seriously, she'd pick up something besides Fiske, and I suspect it's often the Insider's Guide as it's written by "students for students." However, not only is Princeton Review better written, the format of the Insider's Guide is user-surly with small print and cramped, unattractive pages. I will say that the Insider's Guide does a better job of sticking to factual statistics than giving schools subjective ratings on a four-star scale, and some may prefer that. As a matter of fact, the Insider's Guide does have a few statistics that Princeton Review neglects and two of them are important: The freshman retention rate and the graduation rate. Both statistics are fairly good indicators of how happy students are at their respective schools. So if those stats are important to you, that might be one reason to at least browse through the Insider's Guide.

The Insider's Guide inexplicably leaves out some top-notch schools, particularly in Texas and Louisiana (such as Loyola) while including some rather absurd choices that have SAT means in the low 400's or in one case, 300's. They also have a number of large state schools that I don't feel have any place in a guide to the "top schools." The fact is that they attract a multitude of applicants which means more people will buy this book. I wouldn't suggest removing the schools with very unimpressive statistics if there are sufficient reasons to keep them (in many cases, I couldn't find any), but with some incomprehensible exclusions, I can't say I find the book authoritative or comprehensive. Go with Fiske or, if your student isn't excited about researching colleges, go with Princeton Review.

review of Mr. Skin's Skincyclopedia
By Paul Kao
This is not the equivalent of Craig Hosoda's The Bare Facts Video Guide, which lists actresses and the movies they've been in as well as the movies and the actresses in them. Craig also gave time down-to-the-minute in each section where the actress appeared nude, as well as a short description of what she was doing when she appeared nude. The last edition of Craig's book that I know of is 2001.

Mr. Skin's book provides more information about the actresses, but not down-to-the-minute information about when she appears nude in the movie. For information about the movies, you have to look at the index and then find which actress on the refered pages is in the movie. I suppose this saves space as a lot of Craig's info was duplicated in the two sections, but I really liked Craig's down-to-the-minute info. However, Mr. Skin's book has info about movies after 2001, so it will be useful.

All the nudes that's fit for print
By Chris Landau
This compendium of starlet flash truly is encyclopedic. Whether you are a casual viewer of the female form as it shows up in a few frames here and there of mainstream celluloid or you're a serious student of brazen B-movie gratuitous nudity, this massive tome will dial you in to a vast universe of exposed skin that exists beyond the scope of your current knowledge. You think you know nudity? You think you know sex symbols? You think you know stars of grade-C exploitation? You might know more than most (I certainly thought I did), but you won't know it all until you've read through this stunningly informative reference book. The sick part is that you just might find yourself reading straight through the thing. The book is bigger than a brick and twice as heavy, but the prose is light, funny and fast moving. It's the kind of thing where you'll tell youself, Okay, I'm just going to read three more entries, then I'm getting off the toilet and going on with my life. Fifteen entries later, you realize this book could become a problem.

It was the breast of times...
By Tyrone "Dollar" Green
As a fan of the site, MrSkin.com, for years, I've seen the copy evolve into funny and informative profiles and reviews that (almost) distract from the pictures. The publication of this book finally collects the bulk of those insightful actress profiles in a volume I can hold in my hands...at least one of my hands. But seriously, the book is hilarious and, even better, so knowledgeable about celebrity nudity that it is an essential reference when visiting the video rental store. Mr. Skin has done the world a great service. Can't wait for a collection of movie reviews!

The Pirate Wars, by Peter Earle

The Pirate Wars takes the romantic fable of oceangoing Robin Hoods sailing under the "banner of King Death" and contrasts it with the murderous reality of robbery, torture, and murder on the high seas. Noted maritime historian Peter Earle charts centuries of piracy, from Cornwall to the Caribbean, from the sixteenth century to the hanging of the last pirate captain in Boston in 1835. Along the way, we meet characters like Edward Teach, the notorious "Blackbeard," the treasure-hungry Captain Kidd, the dreaded corsairs of Barbary, and the defiant buccaneers of the West Indies.
The Pirate Wars is an account of the golden age of pirates and of the men of the legitimate navies of the world charged with the task of finally bringing these cutthroats to justice.

Avast Ye Hearties! A Bold Tale for Intelligent Readers
By S. J. Masty
What a delight! A respected academic who can write with zip and zest.
Peter Earle likes pirates to a fond degree, and he makes that clear in his entertaining introduction gently poking fun at modern writers who prefer political correctness to accuracy (Bad news, fairly few pirates were disabled lesbians of colour). From there it steps lively, shipmates, and keeps going. Nobody writes novels any more entertaining than Dr Earle's command of history.
Most pirates began as merchant seamen or privateers, given letters of marque by governments, permitting them to ravage the shipping of the government's enemies or competitors. So they got trained at taxpayer expense then began to bite the hand that fed it. But then they had a lot of fun when they got ashore. Rather, if they got ashore, because governments spent a lot trying to get their rascals back on a leash or send them to the bottom of D Jones' Locker.
Parenthetically, it reminds one of today's problems of terrorism, since the terrorists (like the pirates) were trained by governments to attack enemies, and only later they 'went bad.' Think of how many terrorists received US or Pakistani or Saudi training, weapons and money to help Afghans battle the Soviets. The terrorists, however, seem less endearing and less easily distracted by wine and wenching and gold doubloons. Pirates, however, captured the world's imagination from the start.
Pirate Wars is good enough to warrant buying two copies, one to read and then lend, and one never to lend at all -- I keep mine safely locked in a sea-chest with my pieces of eight. Arrrrrr. Load the blunderbuss, Mister Hands! Hoist the mainsail! Tie that dog to the yardarm!

At War with the World
By David Stapleton
I have read and reviewed a number of books on pirates and piracy and find this one to be among the jewels of the bunch. It is readable, informative and even, at times, entertaining.

The author's premise for the book is that much of western civilization had been waging a war with pirates for hundreds of years, culminating in the eventual decline and virtual elimination of these renegades from western seas in the early to mid 19th century. Peter Earle takes us through the history of pirates in those seas, from the origins to the eventual demise. Along the way he spreads a web of tales and stories, supported by research that should entertain many a reader that would otherwise find history a dry meal. The author's recounting of the history is reasonably linear beginning in the 16th century and progressing steadily forward in time frame.

By necessity, it seems, much of the author's work centers on English and related history, although he does step off the standard fair of Golden Age pirates often enough that even a knowledgeable reader will find something new in the way of pirate fact. There is little or no illustration; my one complaint, surely a few maps were warranted in the least. The bibliography, however, is a thing of delight, to be mused over in the constant search for new sources.

My bottom line is that while I have a few books that are nearer my heart, there are not many that I have found as encompassing or informative as this one. I recommend Pirates in the Caribbean :1493-1720 by Cruz Apestegui as an excellent source for the Spanish side of the Golden Age of Piracy, and Angus Konstam's History of Pirates for a glossy overview of piracy. Authoritative and Exciting
By George Poirier
Although piracy has been in existence for millennia and in many parts of the world, the author mainly concentrates on piracy in the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean over a period of about 230 years, culminating in the 1830s. Rather than presenting various mini-biographies of famous pirates, or dwelling on the finer details of pirate life, the author has chosen to present a more sweeping picture of piracy, i.e., the big picture. Different types of pirates are discussed, as are the reasons for the ups and downs in pirate activity over the years and the many efforts to eradicate them. The book is clearly written and, although quite authoritative and heavily referenced, it is also quite exciting. The only unfortunate downside to this book is its complete lack of maps and figures. A few of each would have been very useful to complement the text, e.g., illustrations of the different types of ships and the geographical areas in which various pirates operated. Despite this minor drawback, this is an excellent book that should appeal to both history buffs and pirate lovers alike.

I Love It When You Talk Retro: Hoochie Coochie, Double Whammy, Drop a Dime, and the Forgotten Origins of American Speech, by Ralph Keyes

An entertaining and informative book about the fashion and fads of language

Today’s 18-year-olds may not know who Mrs. Robinson is, where the term “stuck in a groove” comes from, why 1984 was a year unlike any other, how big a bread box is, how to get to Peyton Place, or what the term Watergate refers to. I Love It When You Talk Retro discusses these verbal fossils that remain embedded in our national conversation long after the topic they refer to has galloped off into the sunset. That could be a person (Mrs. Robinson), product (Edsel), past bestseller (Catch-22), radio or TV show (Gangbusters), comic strip (Alphonse and Gaston), or advertisement (Where’s the beef?) long forgotten. Such retroterms are words or phrases in current use whose origins lie in our past. Ralph Keyes takes us on an illuminating and engaging tour through the phenomenon that is Retrotalk—a journey, oftentimes along the timelines of American history and the faultlines of culture, that will add to the word-lover’s store of trivia and obscure references.  "The phrase “drinking the Kool-Aid” is a mystery to young people today, as is “45rpm.” Even older folks don’t know the origins of “raked over the coals” and “cut to the chase.” Keyes (The Quote Verifier) uses his skill as a sleuth of sources to track what he calls “retrotalk”: “a slippery slope of puzzling allusions to past phenomena.” He surveys the origins of “verbal fossils” from commercials (Kodak moment), jurisprudence (Twinkie defense), movies (pod people), cartoons (Caspar Milquetoast) and literature (brave new world). Some pop permutations percolated over decades: Radio’s Take It or Leave It spawned a catch phrase so popular the program was retitled The $64 Question and later returned as TV’s The $64,000 Question. Keyes’s own book Is There Life After High School? became both a Broadway musical and a catch phrase. Some entries are self-evident or have speculative origins, but Keyes’s nonacademic style and probing research make this both an entertaining read and a valuable reference work." --Publishers Weekly

The phrase drinking the Kool-Aid is a mystery to young people today, as is 45rpm. Even older folks don't know the origins of raked over the coals and cut to the chase. Keyes (The QuoteVerifier) uses his skill as a sleuth of sources to track what he calls retrotalk: a slippery slope of puzzling allusions to past phenomena. He surveys the origins of verbal fossils from commercials (Kodak moment), jurisprudence (Twinkie defense), movies (pod people), cartoons (Caspar Milquetoast) and literature (brave new world). From Booklist
In his excellent introduction to this language book, Keyes defines retrotalk as a “slippery slope of puzzling allusions to past phenomena,” allusions that employ terms he refers to as “verbal artifacts,” or phrases that hang around in our national conversation long after the topic they refer to has vanished from memory. Hard as it may be for those of a certain age to acknowledge, young people no longer understand references to 45 rpms, breadboxes, and Ma Bell. In addition, one’s comparisons also often fall along generational lines, as talking-head David Brooks discovered when he compared Hillary Clinton’s first debate performance to Emily Post and her second to Howard Beale. The names of the mistress of etiquette and the raving anchorman from the movie Network do not resonate with anyone younger than 50. The bulk of Keyes’ book is devoted to a pedestrian listing of such words and phrases and their origins, grouped in chapters related to the venues, such as boxing, politicians, movies, and comics, that gave rise to the terms. Still, the list makes addictive reading for word nerds and informative browsing for everyone else. --Joanne Wilkinson

Praise for I LOVE IT WHEN YOU TALK RETRO:

“At last, a genuine study of the sort of history you will actually want to know about. This book reveals the root of a large part of our culture and the way modern language has developed.”--Albert Jack, author of Red Herrings and White Elephants and Shaggy Dogs and Black Sheep

“We love I Love It When You Talk Retro. How modern language came to be, and how it trickles into our daily speech is a fascinating subject. Ralph Keyes has done a fine job.”--Jane and Michael Stern, authors of The Encyclopedia of Bad Taste, The Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, and Roadfood

“A fun, fact-packed and eminently browsable guide, which cuts the mustard, hangs a few myths out to dry, and should play in Peoria.”--Henry Hitchings, author of The Secret Life of Words

“Everyone needs this book. Younger people need it to decipher the allusions and metaphors of their elders and older people need it to remind them of the days when today’s retro was cutting edge. Ralph Keyes has outdone himself with this intensely useful and highly entertaining work. I Love It When You Talk Retro is an absolute gem.”--Paul Dickson, author of The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, Family Words, and War Slang

Great resource
By Anyechka
I couldn't stop reading this book because it was so packed with wonderful words and expressions, many of which I had never even heard of. As I read the introduction, I couldn't believe that so many young people entering college today have, for example, never heard of Watergate, are unfamiliar with cassette tapes, and draw a blank at the phrase "you sound like a broken record," but then again, a survey a few years back did show that more Americans can identify the Three Stooges than the three branches of our executive government, and sadly many young people believe history is boring and stupid. While many of the retroterms identified and explained by Mr. Keyes were completely new to me, that just proves the point he was making at the beginning. What's baffling or ancient history to your generation is a well-known reference or term used by another. However, because I have read a lot of older books, some of the terms that supposedly are a mystery to my generation were quite familiar, such as davenport (my preferred word for couch, actually!), icebox, victrola, Hays Code, and Comstock Act. Mr. Keyes doesn't just limit his book to 19th and 20th century retrotalk, but goes far back in history in some cases, such as for "cut a Gordian knot," "Pyrrhic victory," and "hanging by a thread." The book is divided into categories such as comic books, literature, university subjects, sports, personal names, transportation, and television. I also found it helpful as a historical fiction writer, as I discovered that some of the phrases and words I've used in my writing hadn't been coined back then!

However, I felt that a bit of a closer proofreading/editing job might have been needed, as I discovered a couple of embarrassing errors. For example, "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" is credited to The Beach Boys instead of Jan and Dean (did The Beach Boys have a less famous version of it or something?), and Wally Cleaver is identified as Beaver Cleaver's father instead of his brother! And even though I share Mr. Keyes's liberal views, I felt it was a bit unprofessional for him to so clearly advertise his stance throughout certain parts of the book. This isn't a political book, even though it does deal with some retrotalk that originated in politics. A good writer isn't supposed to let his or her personal bias show; I know I probably would have thrown the book down in disgust and not finished it had a right-wing writer been airing his own conservative views unnecessarily! Finally, I was turned off by how Boomer-centric much of the book was, particularly because Mr. Keyes says he was born in 1945, which would make him one of the youngest members of the Silent Generation, not a Boomer as he seems to think he is. I rolled my eyes whenever I read something like "Many Boomers have happy memories of..." or "If you ask a Boomer..." Why does this generation always find a way to make every single issue always come back to them and be all about their generation? I'm not a Boomer, but I'm pretty sure that most people in my generation know what a Magic Marker is, for example, and are familiar with tv shows from the Fifties and Sixties that we've seen on Nick at Nite or watched with an older member of the family! I also thought that short schrift was given to more current retrotalk.

In spite of the shortcomings, however, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in language and linguistics. It's always fascinating to see how language evolves and develops, and how things which are cutting-edge and familiar in one era are almost obsolete in another.

Not just for Wordies...
By Inga
When our daughter-in-law's parents turned 60 last December, my husband and I sent them a box of memorabilia from our common youth containing a "Don't Trust Anyone over 30" button, a "Make Love Not War" mug (with peace symbol), a "Groovy Chick" T-shirt, the Sunset Book of Macrame Plant Hangers, and our personal fave, a barbecue apron that read "I owned an 8-track player." This was all opened in front of the kids who were visiting for Christmas. The parents howled. The kids were...baffled.

Better that we had sent them Ralph Keyes "I Love It when You Talk Retro." Not just for serious Wordies, this collection of "retro terms" (which Keyes defines as a word or phrase...in current use yet [has]an origin that isn't current") is an equally fun read for your favorite boomer, clueless teenager, or simply the idle curious. It works well as a coffee table reference (we regularly find guests leafing through it) or nightstand favorite; our copy, in fact, has been regularly commuting back and forth between both places.

"I Love It When You Talk Retro" is a wonderful addition to anyone's personal library.

Boots on the Ground: A Month with the 82nd Airborne in the Battle for Iraq, by Karl Zinsmeister

Includes 32 color photos taken by the author during the month he was embedded with the 82nd in Kuwait and Iraq.

This is a riveting account of the war in Iraq moving north with the 82nd Airborne. Units of the 82nd depart Kuwait and convoy to Iraq's Tallil Air Base en route to night-and-day battles within the major city of Samawah and its intact bridges across the Euphrates. Boots on the Ground quickly becomes an action-filled microcosm of the new kinds of ultramodern war fighting showcased in the overall battle for Iraq. At the same time it remains specific to the daily travails of the soldiers. Karl Zinsmeister, a frontline reporter who traveled with the 82nd, vividly conveys the careful planning and technical wizardry that go into today's warfare, even local firefights, and he brings to life the constant air-ground interactions that are the great innovation of modern precision combat.

What exactly does it feel like to travel with a spirited body of fighting men? To come under fire? To cope with the battlefield stresses of sleep-deprivation, and a steady diet of field rations for weeks on end? Readers of this day-to-day diary are left with not only a flashing sequence of strong mental images, but also a notion of the sounds and smells and physical sensations that make modern military action unforgettable.

Ultimately, Boots on the Ground is a human story: a moving portrayal of the powerful bonds of affection, trust, fear, and dedication that bind real soldiers involved in battle. There are unexpected elements: The humor that bubbles up amidst dangerous fighting. The pathos of a badly wounded young boy. The affection openly exhibited by many American soldiers--love of country, love of family and hometown, love of each other. This is a true-life tale of superbly trained men in extraordinary circumstances, packed with concrete detail, often surpassing fiction for sheer drama.

From Publishers Weekly
This account of one reporter's month with the 82nd Airborne Division is both a conservative polemic and a vivid portrait of American infantrymen in action. Zinsmeister, who was embedded with the army as a correspondent for The National Review, makes no bones about his unabashed support for the war, and for the American military in general. (He tells readers that he's always taught his own children "to think of military jet noise as 'the sound of freedom.'") The prospect of spending time rubbing shoulders with soldiers in the trenches clearly delights him even before he touches down on Iraqi soil. There is humor in the Zinsmeister's account of bartering for gear in Kuwait's "Body Armor Bazaar," and he provides useful insights into how many of the non-combat operations are actually performed by private civilian contractors. One of the best moments in the book movingly recounts how an Iraqi doctor worked with American soldiers to try to save a wounded boy, yet still refused to tell Zinsmeister his name for fear that his cooperation would draw reprisals later on. The author also gives heartening evidence of the genuine care taken by the troops to avoid civilian casualties. (Less agreeable is his evidence that guerrilla warfare was in full cry even before the formal end of the war.) But readers interested in this information should be prepared to wade through pages and pages of splenetic rants against the anti-war movement and Zinsmeister's fellow journalists, whom he dubs "left-wing, cynical, wiseguy Ivy League types." Such flaws, unfortunately, are not entirely redeemed by the book's outstanding array of color photographs.

--George F. Will, news columnist

"A fast-moving story of courage and competence, written by an observer who offers a far different picture from what was presented by our mainstream media. A moving tribute to what free soldiers united in a common cause can accomplish."
--Victor Davis Hanson, military historian

“The finest, most objective piece of war journalism I’ve read since Ernie Pyle in WWII. Tells the story after talking to all grades of soldiers. No one else took time to tell the full story.”
--Burton Poole, Lt. Col., USAF, Retired

“The most powerfully real ‘war experience’ I will probably ever have. I applaud its insight, voluminous factual information, the personal stories collected from many soldiers, and especially the discoveries about the power of love in extreme life and death situations. I sat on a plane beside a guy who was with author, or the other way around, during these experiences and as I listen to him tell his experiences I told him would get the book and read it. The book gives a small glimpse of why the US was in Iraq and what these young men endured during the first few days of the Second Gulf War. Well written and recommended.

Could Have Been Better
By JerryT
The author works very hard at giving the reader a feel for the action, an "I was there" impression of actual combat and what was going on in his book. Unfortunately, I don't think his prose is much better than mine in too many cases. :( I sometimes that the feeling he had some auto style or theasaurus turned on to phrase his ideas. Quite frankly I think he is in desperate need of an editor if this is to go to a 2nd edition. I was also a bit turned off by some of his conservative ranting, but the liberals turn me off with their ranting too. I think he also maybe rushed this book a bit too quickly and needed a peer review. There were some factual errors regarding the 1991 Gulf War, usually numerical in nature, although these might be linked to a conservative viewpoint. Example: I believe he used a 100+ casualty figure for that bunker that had the civilians in it and was hit by mistake in 1991. I believe the correct total is more like 400+. He also gets off on a rant about the treasures looted from the museum that doesn't seem to jibe with the actual quotations of the director, etc. extensively quoted elsewhere. I think he does take a correct view of the library and some of the other damage (from fires and such). On the whole I'd call this average, although the "color," i.e., "I was there," might make it worth while. I think there are some better choices.

Little Action, Lots of Platitudes.
By Michael J. Rentner
Zinsmeister has a great attitude, and had a fantastic experience. He emphasis on the character and manliness of the soldiers he met was laudatory.
However, he spent far too much time telling us how much he admired these guys and not enough saying what they were doing. And then the last quarter of the book is simple philosophizing and politicizing for my tastes. I agree with all his sentiments, but I was hoping for more about the war and less about that.
I got the impression that he ran out of things to say that were worth while and needed to pad the book so it would be a bit thicker.
It's a quick read, I finished it in a day with a lot of breaks and only an hour here and there.
I suspect Zinzmeister kept his best writing for the periodical that sent him out there. Or I hope so anyway, because the anecdotes he shared here really only fill one or two short chapters, or magazine articles.
If you're expecting a thorough look at the war reveiwing what the 82nd Airborne were doing and when they were doing it, and how it all related to other units, you won't find it here. I'm hoping a more thorough account will be found elsewhere. Don't waste your time on this half-hearted attempt.
