let's reconsider

I read through the other reviews and I understand where they're coming from. Yes, the book is written like an alcoholic's 12 step program BUT Harris is kind of right. At first, I was almost confused as to whether it was a joke or not, but as I read further, I realized that the bad habits that writers have are actually base upon insecurities. Harris tells the reader to suck it up - quit caring so much about what other people might think of your writing - and write good srong sentences. Once you actually get to the 12 steps, I think there is some really useful information in there. I was not overpowered by techinical issues. Harris clearly and simply states what to look out for in your own writing. He actually lists them - which makes this a good reference manual to put on my desk. So the book is based on a joke (if that's what you want to call it). I found it funny. Even funnier, I saw myself in what he was saying.

Humorous read...

This book was pretty humorous. I picked it up after I thought it would be kind of like Eats, Shoots and Leaves. It deals more with sentence structure, though (although some parts of it does deal with grammar).

Harris writes about our "inner child writer" and how it still has a lot of repressed feelings, which is why we lash out and write bad sentences. I didn't really consider myself a malescribe, but I can certainly understand the frustration and disappointment when you encounter one.

Although this book was informative and humorous, my only complaint was that it went a little too far. At times, parts of it seemed far-fetched and there was a bit too much exaggeration. I know this was supposed to be a humorous approch - but maybe less is more. For example, Harris states that malescribism can lead to depression, and even death. Well, I'd say very rarely.

Despite my one dislike about it, When Good People Write Bad Sentences is a humorous and informative read. Especially when you have malescribism. (Oops, was that supposed to be a sentence fragment?) :)

A VERY HELPFUL BOOK - GIVE IT A CHANCE.

I have to tell you that I found this little book to be absolutely delightful and quite informative.

First though, I have to admire the author. Any person who writes a book addressing the correct way to write a language is leaving themselves open to all kind of cheap shots. Each time an author publishes such a book I am always stunned by the number of "experts" that seem to suddenly appear and attempt to tear the work to shreds. I suppose it is an ego thing with some people.

I am also always a bit hesitant to write a review on such books for the same reason. The last one I did cause at least two comments which more or less (in a very rude sort of way) telling me I should probably read the book again as I obviously had missed a lot of points. This criticism was just and truthful as I, more than any one I know, am fully aware of my shortcomings and ignorance of the English language. That is the reason I read and study books such as this. If I were already an expert, there really would be no need I should think.

Anyway...

This is a nicely done little work to help people write better, or at least correctly. The author has indeed used a quirky method as a hook in that he sets the entire book up as a 12 step program which should enable to break a writer's addiction to poor writing skills and such. I can see where this method may aggravate some people and indeed, even offend some, but the method the author used should not distract the reader from the essence of the book; the purpose. I personally had not problems with it. Then again, I do not take much very seriously, including myself.

And I must say that the author has given us some wonderful advice, helpful hints and tips and extremely useful information; information that many of us have not been exposed to since we left high school...if even then!

I found the writing to be refreshing, non technical, practical, humorous and very easy to understand. Now this is not a comprehensive course in English. The author has focused primarily on the sentences, the does and the don't. He addresses structure, correctness and readability and given the reader much to think about and ponder.

I personally (although you probably will not think so after reading this review) found it most helpful and I learned much and relearned much that I thought I knew but had never actually learned it or had long forgotten.

This is a good book. Give it a try.

As the destruction from the war in Iraq has demonstrated most recently, a country's antiquities are never safe from marauding looters and greedy collectors who trawl the black market. In a study that is part detective story and part history lesson, Atwood, an expert on the antiquities market who writes for ARTnews and Archaeology, focuses on one incident as a case study of the insidious effects of the illicit antiquities trade. In 1987, a group of grave robbers working at a burial mound near the village of Sipán in northern Peru uncovered a mausoleum of Moche rulers (the Moche were an innovative indigenous tribe) with a rich cache of gold and silver artifacts. Word soon spread to international buyers, who responded favorably, and prolonged looting began. By the time the Peruvian police intervened three weeks later, much damage had already been done. Walter Alva, a native Peruvian and the site's chief archeologist, uncovered many more undamaged tombs and worked tirelessly to preserve this ancient legacy, bravely confronting looters and endeavoring to establish laws to prevent museums form accepting stolen goods. Compelling

This is just what good non-fiction should be: fascinating, un-put-downable, and important. Not only did I learn about how the art world is allowing the great treasures of history be destroyed or lost to private collectors. This is effectively depriving the world of its history. I recommend this book not just for anyone interested in art and artifacts--though you will learn about it--but for anyone who wants to read an important book about the way we're letting the ability to study our past and our heritage go to ruin. A really good read!

Tomb Raiders, Smugglers and the Looting of the Ancient World

Not quite Laura Croft or Indiana Jones, this book follows the fate of several Peruvian sites and the artifacts taken from them. The focus is as much on the conflicts between the commercial antiquities trade and the archaeologists who wish to study the sites intact (taken to the extreme in actually reburrying sites as to not attract the attention of looters). Not so surprisingly the Museums operate somewhere between - benefiting from the scholarship of the archelogists and also from the tomb raiders who supply them with items for their collections (not directly of course). Well told tales of FBI stings, government policies based more on diplomatic pressures than the "saving" of cultural records and in infighting between the Peruvian archeologist Walter Alva and what seems like the world. On the most basic level, this is about the destruction and loss of history in the quest of money. The book ends with a list of suggestions for what can be done to save these sites from destruction, but I still was left with questions. Some of the measures taken by the government seems a little broad and sweeping. It left me with many questions if government intervention is the best way to stop the flow of illegal artifacts. Although the author seems to show some preference to the side of Alva and the archelogists, he does speak and interview people from all parts of the community, from the actual people who rob the graves and archelogical sites to the people who buy these artifacts either for profit or art. The introduction wrote about Iraq right after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The looting of museums and archelogical sites was immediate. Stellar work from subject Experts!

As a novice on the subject of menopause, I found this book to be extremely easy to read and understand. Its "straight talk" is not only clear, concise and informative, but in a narrative that allows every reader to fully comprehend their options. Hats off to the authors for delivering much needed information at such an ideal time and for doing so in a way that is non-intimidating, allowing the reader to feel empowered.

Great new book on menopause

This book is really funny and easy to read. My doctor recommended it and she was right. It has everything I wanted to know about menopause. Plus a hilarious chapter that is a history of estrogen and also teaches a way to understand scientific articles. Short, too. I loved it.

Adult/High School–Buckhanons second novel firmly establishes her as a timeless voice for a new generation. The point of view alternates between 15-year-old Shivana Montgomery and that of her unborn baby. The two are tied together by the idea of young black women who are used and then forsaken by men. Shivana plans to abort the baby, whose father is a married drug dealer now in jail, but then she meets a man who makes her want to try to live a happy life, one that includes the child. The narrative of the unborn takes readers back in time through several generations of black women during the periods of slavery, Reconstruction, and Harlem in the 1940s. An authenticity of language and action permeates the novel. The realities of poor Chicago life and Shivanas desperation to escape lead to a sad, seemingly predestined conclusion, yet do not detract from the underlying foundations of love and hope. The best in the trilogy

Don't want to write too much because I would give away the plot. I once heard a man from the South Side of Chicago point out a likely unwed mother on Cottage Grove, a well known street in Chicago. Sounded like he was mad at her, but madder at the society that gives young people few hopes. The protagonist in this book could have been that young woman. Kalisha does an incredible job sketching this kind of young woman. We get to meet, too, the adults surrounding her who did their best, or could have done better, to change the outcomes of her life.

The end was so unexpected ! I really loved the way this book was written, the imagery was pure poetry! The story was both familiar and completely foreign, it made me feel both comforted and uncomfortable all at the same time! Looking for more from this author.

My Perception

This was beautifully written but at times troubling to read. The author's voice seemed to echo through the pages and dominate the protagonist's journey. You have a 15 year-old who speaks to the reader with such wisdom and intellect coupled with ignorant dialogue and actions. It was too two-dimensional. This was a worthy soul-searching effort written uniquely with a disheartening deeper meaning, but didn't trump the author's first effort, Upstate in my opinion.

Walk with Osho in Freedom

Osho is amazing beyond words. Within the`New Way of Living' series, next to `Joy' this book on freedom is my favorite. Why do I say this? Because, in my experience, without joy and without freedom to be oneself, life would be a very dull, grinding affair.

Osho saw clearly how society can warp our sense of self and, in many way, how we must pull away from the influence of the mainstream if we are to gain self-understanding and true freedom. Curiously enough, I have been reading a great deal of the ancient philosopher Epicurus and I hear lots of echoes of the wisdom of Epicurus in the pages of Osho's book. As a way of example and to highlight the similarities between Epicurus and Osho, I would like to cite several Osho quotes with my own brief commentary. Since many others have posted reviews here, I thought this approach would bring an air of freshness.

"Forget all about society, don't fight with it. Have nothing to do with society, let society go on as it is." Likewise, Epicurus wants us to recognize in the grinding, competitive world of business, commerce, and politics, many other people will try to force us to run on their rat wheel. Epicurus urged his followers to move away from the city and live in a separate philosophical community, which, in many ways, was like Osho International in Pune, India.

"Freedom from something is not true freedom. The freedom to do anything you want to do is also not the freedom I am talking about. My vision of freedom is to be yourself." This hits squarely on why most people just don't get Osho. Most people are not satisfied with what life gives them. The pleasure of resting in the beauty of the moment completely eludes them. We can almost hear them bellow, `What is so damn beautiful about the present moment?!' Leisure time for them has become entertainment time. This is why Osho developed his dynamic meditations - so all the garbage we have been forced to swallow can be thrown out. And only then can we enjoy the freedom of simply being alive--resting in the fullness of the present moment.

"You are born as freedom. It is just that you have been conditioned to forget it." Likewise, Epicurus knew there is a type of possession even more valuable than possessing all the fine material goods, and that is possessing the ability to be in the world as a certain kind of artist. Not an artist whose artwork is a painted canvas or a marble sculpture, but instead an artist whose artwork is oneself, to transform our life in a way that we see beauty wherever we look; we have a sensitivity to the texture of things; we bring an element of creativity and artistry to our being in the world. What we taste, hear, feel, see and smell takes on a richness as we deepen our love of life. When I see photos of Osho out in nature, this for me is the very picture of freedom.

"Change your inner being. And the moment you are changed completely transformed, you will suddenly see you are out of the imprisonment, you are no longer a slave. You were a slave because of your chaos." Along the same line of thinking, Epicurus outlined what is natural and necessary - food and water for life, clothes and shelter for comfort, and wisdom and friendship for happiness. Those who came to his Garden to learn his philosophy received an education on the desires. As for myself, I appreciate the education I received as a boy, being taught how to read and write and the basics of mathematics and science, but beyond this, the emphasis on conformity and regimentation I found appalling. Following Osho's lead, I came to understand I couldn't look to society to find freedom; rather, I had to transformation myself internally.

Here are 2 Osho quotes: "God, fate, destiny--they are all in the same category: throwing your responsibility onto something that does not exist." And "You can have freedom. But the cost is to accept responsibility in its totality." Likewise, the first two Principal Doctrines of Epicurus are meant to have us experience freedom from fear of God and freedom from fear of death. As both Osho and Epicurus knew: we can't be free as long as we are caught in the grip of fear.

"He (God) does not hear prayers, otherwise you all will be in trouble." True! If God answered all prayers we would all be dead! For example: if one Christian on planet earth prays for the death of all non-Christians and one Muslim on planet earth prays for the death of all non-Muslims, then the entire human population is wiped out! And that is only the prayers of 2 people!

"What exactly is the innermost substance of freedom? - that you are free from the past, that you are free from the future." I love this little book. Please order a copy and walk with Osho in freedom.

Good, but...

Man is always searching for a way to define, identify and then be free of this world. It seems like our daily struggle is to destroy and tear down the parameters of culture as if it was the enemy. But then, in the next breath, we praise some aspect of culture. I don't know if we can have it both ways! Osho provides a good argument for looking beyond the constructs we have established. He gives hope of being free of it as well as giving an adequate description of goals for which to aim.

A great spin to take you away!

We read for many reasons. Those who have left rather stinging remarks in their reviews have valid comments. They are perhaps reading for information or enlightenment. Yet, there are other readers who read to escape the routine of their life. They want to fall in love, have an adventure and solve a case, all within the cover of a book. Yes, the plot is rather far fetched but so is Harry Potter and look how many copies it sold! I tend to bristle at technical readers who do not stick to technical media. The categories is NON-FICTION! Dan Brown has received similar comments about his writing. This comments are unfortunate as they may influence an uniformed reader to not purchase Books that are entertaining and escapist. A book that is realistic is called a textbook. They cost ten times what these wonderful little novels do and sell far fewer copies.

All this being said, I feel First Patient has many merits. It has a clever plot. The reader is taken through several twists and is given the surprise ending that thrills us all.

Michael Palmer created some likable characters which are important for our transference into the plot. I think one of the biggest problems a writer faces is creating characters and scenes that are transferring while staying within the confines of what a publisher feels is a marketable length.

I most most impressed by who the villain was. Often, I am ready to put a book aside within the first 50 pages because the writer has given me too much information and I am not inclined to read any further. This was not the case in First Patient.

Anyone wishing to take a small weekend adventure that doesn't use any gasoline or create a motel bill will be satisfied by their First Patient experience.

An excellent story, and a real adventure in reading. The President is sick and that puts the world and civilization at risk. The hero (Doctor Gabe) while trying to cure the president is pursued by killer(s) and a mysterious beautiful lady. Is this lady a friend, lover, or enemy?
The story continues to develop and the excitement and action keeps growing. The conclusion finally comes and the pieces of this puzzle come together but not until you have through all the emotions (fear, anguish, hopelessness, and finally????). I am looking forward to more stories from Palmer and a sequel about Doctor Gabe.

This was an I couldn't put it down 2 session read. If you enjoy medical mystery/thrillers this is a must read. If you just read for escape and entertainment value (like I do), this is still a must read. Well developed characters, insight into presidential security, and of course nanotechnology. The story was in the end believable, with all the twists and turns that make for a great read. Well done Dr. Palmer. Looking forward to next year and a new 1st edition to add to my personal library.

Evelyn Panelli is of Italian, black, and Irish descent, with red hair and blue-green eyes and with the demeanor of a boy. She has lived a rough life in the streets as a member of the all-girl family, Twenty-Gang. At 17 she is sentenced to a jail term of no less than 18 months but no longer than two years in a juvenile detention center. Eve Panelli is a young hustler that backs down for no one. Since the loss of her parents at an early age, the only family Eve has is her crew the infamous Twenty gang. With two years of prison already under her belt, Eve is now eighteen and back on the streets of Harlem getting money the best way she knows how :strong-arm robbery. In the midst of all of this, she has some strong feelings for her longtime friend and hustler Felon that she doesn't know how to express. But things are not the same on the Harlem streets since Eve has been away. The number one drug supplier the dominant DeNardi family is trying to solidify its presence on these streets through Felon, his right hand man Butter and their crew. Felon and Butter are on top of the world and plan to stay there. But Butter's resentment toward the DeNardi family and his cowboy antics may lead them down a deadly and dangerous road. Things get ugly when Eve's best friend and crime partner Cassidy is killed in the crossfire of this drug war. Eve vows to get revenge and won't let anybody step in her way. She has to not only avenge the death of her best friend, but also the death of her own parents. When the smoke clears, will Eve succeed or will this be a deadly mistake?

Eve is an incredible novel by K'wan. K'wan once again brought a fast-paced storyline that showed the gritty violence of the hustling game. This author showed great creativity in developing the main character Eve and her crew Twenty gang. K'wan showed that even while doing dirt in the streets, Eve was still a woman that can have a softer side. What I liked most about this novel is that Eve was not the average sleep with men for money type female hustler. She was getting her money in the most dangerous way possible with strong-arm robbery. By tapping into the female psyche, K'wan made Eve a believable character which is a true testament to this author's talent. Eve is a riveting, chilling, page-turner that grabs you and won't let go. K'wan once again brought a widely entertaining novel that will satisfy his fans and will gain new ones. With Eve, K'wan proves why he is one of the best urban fiction authors of today and in the years to come.

Evelyn Panneli had lived a lifetime, she was orphaned at the age of twelve and the streets of Harlem claimed her. Before her eighteenth birthday she had been incarcerated for almost two years. Eve took a rap for two of her homeboys, Felon and his partner Butter. It was a tough choice, but they were family and with 'family', it goes with the territory. Now back on the streets, she is ready to start slanging and banging with her crew.

Things changed the two years Eve was gone, Felon and Butter are on the come-up in Harlem's drug traffic. Butter is with Eve's girl, Cassidy and Eve is feeling Felon. Although Felon can always roll with any homie, Eve unknowingly has his heart. But both are to hard to trust the relationship game.

Life was chillin, and then out of nowhere their idyllic world begins to crack. The one person Eve loved unconditionally is killed and a crooked-cop, who worked for the mob, is murdered. Harlem becomes a battleground. Felon needs to clean things up before Eve, trying to avenge her friend's death and even a score from her past, goes after some heavy hitters in the mob.

EVE is raw, gripping, gritty, and authentic. K'WAN has captured scenes from street life that adds empathy to the perception of urban youth. Their code of honor will surprise and confound readers. I was impressed with how K'WAN was able to write this story from a bangers view and still maintain an almost eloquent style that juxtaposed readers into the lives of a man and a woman engulfed in a world that forces them to 'come with it'. The climatic ending is straight, no chaser.

This is the first book that I have read by Kwan. This turned out to be a awesome book and I would definitely read another one by him, especially if it's anything like this one. Kudos Kudos Kudos !
