Crippen: A Novel of Murder, by John Boyne

July 1910: A gruesome discovery has been made at 39 Hilldrop Crescent, Camden.

Chief Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard did not expect the house to be empty. Nor did he expect to find a body in the cellar. Buried under the flagstones are the remains of Cora Crippen, former music-hall singer and wife of Dr. Hawley Crippen. No one would have thought the quiet, unassuming Dr. Crippen capable of murder, yet the doctor and his mistress have disappeared from London, and now a full-scale hunt for them has begun.

Across the Channel in Antwerp, the S.S. Montrose has just set off on its two-week voyage to North America. Slipping in among the first-class passengers is a Mr. John Robinson, accompanied by his teenage son, Edmund. The pair may be hoping for a quiet, private voyage, but in the close confines of a luxury ocean liner, anonymity is rare. And with others aboard looking for romance, or violence, or escape from their past in Europe, it will take more than just luck for the Robinsons to survive the voyage unnoticed.

An accomplished, intricately plotted novel, Crippen brilliantly reimagines the amazing escape attempt of one of history's most notorious killers and marks the outstanding American debut of one of Ireland's best young novelists.

Starred Review. Had Charles Dickens been around to turn his talents to fictionalizing the classic Crippen murder case, the result might well have been close to this superb, multifaceted novel from Irish author Boyne (The Thief of Time). The crime, a cause célèbre in 1910, is probably best remembered for its denouement, which featured a race across the Atlantic by Scotland Yard Insp. Walter Dew in pursuit of his suspects aboard a cruise ship. Boyne brings all the characters in this drama to life, skillfully shifting perspectives and using flashbacks and flash-forwards. While his depiction of Hawley Crippen, a quack and self-proclaimed doctor with a disturbing taste for butchery, and his mistress is admittedly speculative, the author's imaginings of their inner lives and motivations are plausible. His version of the events of the night when Crippen's harridan wife met her gruesome death is convincing, despite the lack of historical support. Boyne is to be commended for his ability to alternate between Wodehousian humor and Edwardian noir. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Based on the case of a man who murdered his wife and hacked her body to bits and almost got away with it, Boyne's novel weaves together Hawley Crippen's attempt to flee England for Canada with his much-younger mistress, Ethel LeNeve, on the SS Montrose with the events in Crippen's life that led up to the murder. Disguised as father and son, Crippen and Ethel aren't able to fly under the radar as they'd hoped when they attract the attention of a gossipy matron; her amorous daughter, who is peeved when Ethel doesn't fall for her charms; and the ship's reserved captain. Crippen, a man whose ambitions to become a doctor were squelched by his religious mother, has finally found happiness and love with Evelyn after two failed marriages. But the suspicions of a persistent socialite friend of Crippen's second wife set Scotland Yard on the would-be doctor's tail. Boyne captures the excitement of the hunt for Crippen that ensued as well as offering a surprising twist at the novel's conclusion. Gripping historical fare. Kristine Huntley

Review
From Library Journal (starred review): *Boyne, John. Crippen: A Novel of Murder. Thomas Dunne Bks: St. Martin's. Mar. 2006. c.352p. ISBN 0-312-34358-2 [ISBN 978-0-312-34358-3]. $24.95. F "The truth always outs," states Inspector Dew of Scotland Yard. Or does it? Boyne (The Thief of Time) blends fact, fiction, and supposition in a suspenseful tale based on the 1910 transatlantic pursuit of Dr. Hawley Crippen for the murder and brutal dismemberment of his wife, Cora. The novel seamlessly blends several story lines, following Hawley and lover Ethel, disguised as father and son, as they board a cruise ship headed for Canada (and, they hope, freedom) while also tracing the life of Hawley and of those connected to him from his infancy to his execution for Cora's murder. Unlike historical perspectives that mention Crippen and Jack the Ripper in the same breath, Boyne's Crippen is more sympathetic, although certainly frightening at times. Despite having to capture such a long time frame, Boyne does an excellent job of condensing and elaborating exactly where and when he should. His characters are wonderfully memorable and engaging, and this book will satisfy patrons with a thirst for dramatized true-crime stories. Highly recommended for all popular fiction collections.-Susan O. Moritz, National Gallery of Art Lib., Washington, DuBR> -- Susan O. Moritz "Library Journal starred review" (02/01/2006)

A famous true crime story poorly fictionalized
By Tom Hughes
I know the Crippen case very well. I have read several true crime historical accounts of it and very much enjoyed the recent book Thunderstruck the Crippen and Marconi stories. The author here attempts to fictionalise the story and I have no quarrel with that but he has failed. The female characters, especially, Mrs. Smythson, the Drakes, and Cora Crippen are cardboard stereotypes.

It's a period story with precious little period detail. In 1912, no policeman would have used the expression "media circus."

The author's "twist on the story" is plausible and may be the most interesting thing about this generally exasperating effort.

Crippen
By Angelo A. Cataldi Jr.
An absolutely brilliant effort. Tightly plotted, with characters that call to mind a long-past era, this is one of the best historically-based novels of the new millenium.

"It's always the quiet ones. . . ."
By E. Bukowsky
John Boyne's "Crippen" is a superb historical mystery in which the author puts his own spin on a heinous crime that took place in Camden, England in 1910. Dr. Hawley Crippen is not really a doctor, but rather a mousy individual who has read up on medical subjects and taken some correspondence courses. However, Hawley is not averse to passing himself off as a doctor in order to eke out a living. He is incredibly unlucky with women. When he marries for the second time, he makes the mistake of choosing a harridan named Cora, who abuses him both verbally and physically when she is not busy taking other men into her bed. After Cora is found murdered and hacked to death in the cellar of the Crippen household, Hawley is the prime suspect.

"Crippen" is a textured, involving, and suspenseful psychological study of how a mentally unstable parent can permanently damage her child, and how a monstrous woman can make her husband's existence into a living hell. In addition, Boyne brilliantly, and with mordant humor, analyzes the hypocrisy of the upper classes in England, the predatory nature of newspaper reporters, and the impossibility of ever fully understanding the complexity of people's motives, feelings, and desires.

The author constructs his story meticulously, teasing the reader with bits of information that become meaningful later on in the narrative. He goes back and forth in time, creating a rich and colorful tapestry with fully realized and lively characters. Among them are the insufferable Antoinette Drake, a stuffy, self-absorbed, and obnoxious dowager, Captain Kendall, the skipper of a luxurious transatlantic ocean liner who is distracted by the illness of the first officer whom he adores, and Ethel LeNeve, a young woman who finds something of value in Hawley Crippen, and attempts to rescue him from his life of misery. John Boyne depicts Crippen as a marvelously complicated individual. Is he an innocent and self-effacing man who is desperate for affection and some peace of mind, or is he a conniving criminal trying to get away with murder? Boyne saves some tasty surprises for the dramatic conclusion of this terrific Dickensian tale of tortured love, heartache, and death.

How to Remodel a Man: Tips and Techniques on Accomplishing Something You Know Is Impossible but Want to Try Anyway, by W. Bruce Cameron

Current research suggests there is a large group of people who have been trying to change men. For want of a better term, let's call these people "women."

Their urge is understandable. We've all had to take measures to accommodate men, because they are involved in nearly every aspect of modern life except maybe housework and they like to run things like corporate meetings and the planet. The only other alternative has been to try to avoid men altogether, which is pretty hard to do if you are interested in stuff like reproduction or having your oil changed.

That's why How to Remodel a Man is so indispensable-it is a clear, step-by-step guide for anyone who wants to alter the character and behavior of a man, written by an actual man. Author W. Bruce Cameron provides startling insight into male pattern thinking, explaining why men can open a refrigerator and not see the mayonnaise, or how it is that they can throw dirty clothes at the hamper or in front of the hamper or even on top of the hamper and yet not seem capable of getting any of it in the hamper.

Normally, changing a man has certain obstacles, including, but not limited to, the fact that it is impossible. But Cameron is able to overcome this hindrance because he, himself, has been remodeled. In a move so bold it may be shocking to people unaccustomed to such personal courage, Cameron turned himself over to the women in his life and asked them to change him. It started with a list of his flaws (Cameron came up with four; the women came up with one hundred seventy eight) and ended with him writing How to Remodel a Man, so that others could learn from his experience.

If you're a woman, you'll be amazed to learn that men can be trained to perform all sorts of tricks, like using the instruments on the sides of their heads (the ears) to listen to you, and the space between those instruments to think about you.

If you're a man, you've been given this book so that you'll see that it's possible to watch television without holding the remote or to ask for directions from strangers without suffering a catastrophic loss of testosterone. Cameron changed, and you can too.

How to Remodel a Man is the essential guide for anyone in the awkward position of having to interact with a person of the male gender.

From Publishers Weekly
Humor columnist Cameron follows his bestselling 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter (2001) with a somewhat scrambled but goofily satisfying parody of inspirational how-to books. While warning women that effecting real change in their men is nigh impossible ("Attempting to modify a man's behavior is like trying to talk cats into playing the tuba—even if you can convince them to put their lips on the thing, they'll never understand why"), he does offer plenty of tongue-in-cheek hints: to get a man to exercise, for example, buy him cool new gear; to cope with a man who snores, "teach yourself to snore back in self-defense." As an ostensibly "Changed Man" himself, Cameron is free to paint a comically unflattering portrait of male behavior in sections such as "Male's Verbal Skills Are Slow To Develop, and Then They Stop." In other words, men are idiots, and Cameron offers numerous funny takes on that thesis—only some of which might sound familiar to readers of Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys, a classic comic take on the male psyche.

“W. Bruce Cameron is the Dave Barry of modern family life.”—John Temple, Rocky Mountain News

About the Author
W. Bruce Cameron worked for General Motors and got up early every morning and wrote novels. He started to write a column on the Internet for friends, which grew, and at its peak had 40,000 readers. The Rocky Mountain News hired him to be a columnist and the column was nationally syndicated. The column "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" was so popular he expanded the topic into a book published by Workman in 2001. NOT FOR ME
By lifeisshortlaughalot
This book has an intriguing title and started out fairly interesting and humorous, but it was more of a story about a self-absorbed guy who wanted reformed and admits this is an impossible task. I was horribly turned off when I got to the chapter on flatulence, did not find it humorous and proved to me that this author was, indeed, not reformed at all. I read no further and returned this book.

Laugh Out Loud
By Kipsy Marlowe
Buy this book ONLY if you want to "Laugh Out Loud." It has page after page of hilarious "helpful hints" -- ammunition for the ongoing battle of the sexes -- presented in a sillier, softer format, yet with a sly masculine slant. Chock-ful of light-hearted answers to everyday questions, like why a guy would want to go to a ball game in the snow wearing nothing but green greasepaint, the amusing text turns turns guff into guffaw. The author's comparison to the "map of Wyoming" is a pretty astute observation about what really goes on inside the male brain. On the flipside, the over-the-top mirth level takes some of the pain out of how much giving birth really hurts. Each chapter gets funnier. Presented ingenuously, the Seinfeld-like absurdity of everyday gender-specific topics forces readers to remind ourselves to laugh at/with, rather than leave, the significant other. I laughed so hard at the teaching the dog not to fart part that I dropped the book, and found my page again somewhere between wry and "way-witty." This writer is not just hilarious, he's absolutely hysterical! This Cameron dude takes humor writing to a whole new level. There's only one drawback: Jolly as it is, reading this book is a teensy bit sad because it makes you miss Erma Bombeck's newspaper column. I wish he would write a column for the major syndicates so we could pick up the newspaper and have a new laugh every day.

Planning a same-sex wedding isn't all that different than planning a straight wedding. While some couples may choose a stereotypical biker bash or drag fest, David's emphasis is on traditional ceremonies and receptions, where same-sex cake toppers and greater emphasis on coordinated wedding attire may be the only hints that the marriage might not be recognized in all 50 states. The guide provides the usual checklists and common-sense wedding advice ("never hire a caterer-no matter what-without tasting the food first"). But its most unique-and therefore most useful-aspects deal with the challenges specific to same sex couples, such as hiring an attorney to navigate state laws that deal with partnerships; announcing the engagement to family and friends; finding gay-friendly vendors; and dealing with hesitant guests. David relies heavily on his own experience running a romantic inn in Bucks County, Penn., and marrying his partner, Doc, both for advice and for anecdotes. David has never met a romantic conceit that he didn't like, so readers should be prepared to revel in starry-eyed schmaltz and the kind of flamboyant wisdom that has made entities such as "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" so successful (e.g., in a chapter titled, "Creating Your Wedding Style," David writes, "It's important that you keep in mind that you will be basically creating a set design, almost like those in Broadway productions"). The book also includes sample menus (and the recipes to go with them) and listings for gay-friendly vendors and partnership advocacy organizations.

You are basically buying an advertisement
By RM
This book was nothing but a plug for the author's website. He mentions it every chance he gets. I did not find the book helpful. I wanted more of a "How to" guide book. The sections with "how-to" were minimal and extremely vague. I read the book in about 40 min. Don't waste your time.

Definitely useful
By wellreadwoman
I picked up this (and two other gay and lesbian wedding guides) fully expecting it to be biased wedding industry propaganda and not particularly useful for planning my smallish low-budget wedding. But I was pleasantly surprised to find a small book chock full of great information. While the author was clearly used to planning fairly lavish traditional ceremonies, the step-by-step planning process worked just as well for my smaller event. I particularly found the sections on wedding style/vision, incorporating cultural influences, dealing with wedding stress, and reception planning useful.

The earnest, inclusive and reassuring tone was great---very down to earth. It's a good book to read when having a brideszilla moment to remind you to calm down, talk to your partner and remember why you're doing all this in the first place.

My main complaint was the chapter on current LGBT law on marriage, partnerships, legal protections etc. Since this type of information is always changing, it's better to check with a more up to date source (a local LGBT equality organization, a lawyer, the HRC website, or a legal guide). A related concern: nearly all the websites the book mentioned are defunct, under new management, or no longer useful. In addition to the oft-mentioned gayweddings.com (which I think has been bought out), I would also recommend checking out purpleunions.com if you're looking for vendors.

Also, the ceremony planning section was a bit thin on info on secular ceremonies. If you're not having a church wedding, I'd recommend a ceremony planning book like I Do by Sydney Barbara Metrick or Alternative Weddings by Jane Ross-MacDonald for the ceremony. But overall, this is a good book. I checked it out from the library originally, but actually ended up buying it.

Great book with lots of information, but most websites listed are dead.
By Nicholas Greenweck
The review, by wellreadwoman, is dead on accurate. I borrowed this book from my local library, and have to say that this review is absolutely on track. This book is great, but don't waste your time with the websites listed in the book. The only website that still holds up is [...] . Good luck with your own Gay/Lesbian Wedding!

"A Streetcar Named Desire" is one of the most haunting and most-studied modern plays. Staggs' new book will fascinate fans and richen newcomers' understanding of its importance in American theater and movie history.

From Publishers Weekly
Tennessee Williams's 1947 masterpiece took Broadway by storm and made the brooding Marlon Brando a star. Blanche DuBois's last line, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers," has become a cliché, but Staggs (All About All About Eve; Close-Up on Sunset Boulevard) argues that the whole play is a seminal work, which still "seduces with its disordered exoticism and its power to engulf." He has crafted an entertaining behind-the-scenes narrative of both the play and the film—from Williams's early drafts to the film's battles with Hollywood censors. Rather than dwell on academic interpretations of Streetcar, Staggs takes a more personal tack. He profiles everyone from director Elia Kazan to Jessica Tandy (Broadway's Blanche) as well as backstage personnel. The result is a comprehensive minihistory of 20th-century American stage and screen. And he doesn't stint on tabloid juice, either, noting that both Vivien Leigh and Kazan had voracious sexual appetites. He also incorporates playful trivia, such as a Jeopardy!-style quiz on actresses who've played Blanche. The inclusion of such lighthearted information balances Staggs's absorbing account of the creation of and continued fascination with this American classic. Photos.

“Opinionated, revealing, constantly entertaining account of the birth and growth of Tennessee Williams's most famous play.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“A comprehensive minihistory of 20th-century American stage and screen and [Staggs] doesn't skimp on tabloid juice.” ―Publishers Weekly

“…a spellbinder…” ―The Hollywood Reporter

From the Back Cover

"WHEN BLANCHE MET BRANDO: The Scandalous Story of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire' promises something salacious but delivers something better…a witty, insightful probe of Tennessee Williams' most famous play in all its variations."―The Dallas Morning News

The play launched Marlon Brando's career, and the movie shot his star into the stratosphere. The film also redefined Vivien Leigh as another kind of Southern belle: Blanche as Scarlett on the skids. And the movie as modern audiences know it barely escaped the unforgiving knife of censorship. "A Streetcar Named Desire" is more than a classic piece of American art―it's a daring and raw masterpiece as alive with meaning today as it was when first performed in 1947.

Witty, rich with detail and exuberantly opinionated, WHEN BLANCHE MET BRANDO is the full behind-the-scenes story of "A Streetcar Named Desire." Moving from the opening of Tennessee Williams' groundbreaking play and the scandalized audiences it left on Broadway to its London debut to Elia Kazan's exceptional movie version, Staggs illuminates "Streetcar's" surprising complexities and the powerhouse personalities behind them.

"Staggs' book is an excellent companion piece, giving a fine and often funny account of the many difficulties Williams' story faced on the way to becoming history."―Reuters

What about the other Stanleys?
By hooligan
I enjoyed Sam Staggs' book about "Streetcar!" However, I didn't find it as thorough as his other books about "All About Eve" and "Sunset Boulevard." There were plenty of details about the Brando-Tandy & Brando-Leigh versions of "Streetcar," but hardly a mention of the Ralph Meeker and Anthony Quinn/Uta Hagen productions of "Streetcar...!" There was one humourous mention of Judith Evelyn as Blanche, but I would have been more interested in hearing about these two versions rather than all the other operatic and various foreign productions of "Streetcar"!

Entertaining - but not more and not always
By Leser
Like other reviewers, I was delighted to find a book dedicated to the fabulous "Streetcar named Desire". The book doubtlessly is entertaining, at least most of the time. The style is chatty, the author indulges in rumors, anecdotes and gossip, never hesitating to give a highly subjective viewpoint. As he doesn't pretend to be objective, I didn't mind too much, though I would have preferred more information and less gossip. Still, most of it was amusing to read. I don't know much about Brando and the author's chit-chatty information about him made Brando come to life for me. - Sometimes, I was a bit lost when the author seemed to forget that not everybody is as familiar with all Hollywood personalities or wannabee personalities. His overly familiar way of talking about people I never heard of, the lack of at least one or two sentences of background information, made some passages unclear to me.

What I thoroughly enjoyed were the interpretations of the play and its characters, some by the author himself, some quoted from others. I would have liked more of this. Also, his description of mimic and camera work during the first scene of the movie was very perceptive. I watched this scene right afterwards and did see it with different eyes. Again, more of that would have been great. Those - in my opinion - were the best parts of the book.

As mentioned by another reviewer, the information about Vivien Leigh and her being affected by playing Blanche was highly insufficient. It is such a fascinating topic and one that would have deserved more coverage. I was disappointed by the lacklustre handling of this topic. Also, less rehashed gossip and more information would have improved the chapter on Vivien Leigh tremendously.

Generally, I was often surprised - and disappointed - by the author's choice of what to cover in great detail and what to cover only cursorily. I didn't need to know every memo, phone call and detail of the preproduction phase. Many of the actor biographies were extremely boring. If someone did nothing interesting apart from having a tiny part in Streetcar named Desire, I don't want to read about that person's life in detail. The chapter on several actresses who played Blanche or could have played Blanche was tedious. The author gives descriptions of several actresses and how they got to play Blanche. Most of the time, these descriptions weren't interesting, they didn't contain any additional information except for "XY always wanted to play Blanche and then played her in XY theatre on this date." This doesn't make good reading. It could have been limited to the few interesting background stories.

Sometimes, the writing seemed utterly unstructured. Anecdotes are written down without a combining element, without any attempt to get some nice writing style into them. Three sentences about a Karl Malden anecdote are written at the end of a one-page paragraph with Brando anecdotes, then a new paragraph is started. The Karl Malden anecdote is out of place and one wonders whether nobody edited this book. Small things like this appear repeatedly, making for uninspired writing. This contrasts with several other chapters, giving the impression that the author didn't care about all of his topics.

So, in total, this book is a mixture of highly entertaining, at times witty observations and bland listings of uninteresting facts or gossip. It did give me new information about the play, the movie and some of the actors, but in my opinion it suffers too many weaknesses to be recommendable.

Facts filtered through opinion...
By Todd E. Babcock
The title of this book is by no means deceiving in it's pulp/tabloid style. The author, while having done much research, revels in his own streaming opinions about Williams, Brando, 'Streetcar' and more importantly, what he 'thinks' happened based on pure speculation. Theres no doubt the simple facts of this production and its titan creators is enough to be compelling material but I often found some of the belittling commentary irritating.

An entire paragraph on Brando's "bubble butt" or describing LAST TANGO IN PARIS as "limp-dick cinema" should give the reader some idea of the level of cattiness married to erudition you have here. If you are looking for less of a 'personal' contribution from the author I would recommend Donald Spoto's book on Williams and Peter Manso's on Brando (the latter cited repeatedly in this book).

If you are simply looking for an information-laden, STAR magazine read for the summer...you've come to the right place. Or, if you're like me, you want any kernal of wisdom not already covered in other tomes (i.e. Kazan's A LIFE) you may turn over a few stones between the speculation and hetero-phobic opinions.

Raising a Reader: A Mother's Tale of Desperation and Delight, by Jennie Nash

What were my kids born to do? That is the question I hope to help them answer. And because reading is the thing I love most, it's only natural for me to hope it will become something they love, too...The trouble is that reading is a particularly slippery passion to want to pass along because it's a skill most parents would agree their children have to master, to one degree or another.
--from Raising a Reader

Can passion be passed along from parent to child? Can you, in other words, make someone love baseball, ballet or books? Of course you can't - but that doesn't stop parents from trying. Jennie Nash was one of those parents - a parent so obsessed about getting her kids to read that her desire sometimes strayed into desperation; her hope often became an obsession; and instead of helping, her resolve got in the way. In the end, she found that, like so many of the things we do as parents, passing along a passion for reading happens in the push and pull of digging in and letting go, day in and day out, both because of and in spite of our efforts.

Nash shares stories and misadventures from the years when her young daughters were learning what it meant to have a relationship with words--and she was learning to let them. She reminds us how the magic moments happen in their own sweet time, by being together in the presence of good books and seeing each child as unique.

Each chapter of Raising a Reader ends with personal, practical tips and games that spring straight from the narrative. A comprehensive index discusses many of the books Nash has enjoyed with her children, providing a year's worth of titles for parents and their children to explore.

For parents overwhelmed with the many technical advice books written by specialists and teachers, Nash's anecdotal guide to getting children to pick up a book might be a refreshing change. Nash is not an educator, nor is she a learning specialist. She is, however, the author of The Victoria's Secret Catalog Never Stops Coming: And Other Lessons I Learned From Breast Cancer and the mother of two daughters, aged 10 and seven, who are both avid readers. Thus, her guide bursts with examples of her own personal frustrations and triumphs. As she reports on how she made progress with her children's literacy, she shares insights and practical tips, suggesting, for example, that parents and children both keep journals to track the books they've read. Nash's use of personal stories may not be the most scientific way to teach children to read, but it could help parents who are feeling desperate or frustrated with the task of cultivating literacy.

Good tips, but...
By annette873
I'm also a bookaholic mom, so I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, I found the author's message in conflict with her actions and had a hard time getting past that. This book presents itself as a guide on how to pass along your passions without being overbearing or minimizing your child's other interests. Nash wants to be able to do this almost as desperately as she wants her daughters to find the same meaning in reading as she has. Both are admirable goals, but the pushy tone pushed me away.

In the chapter titled Grace, Nash paints the picture of her family relaxing in a snowed-in cabin, each one reading by the cozy fire. You can tell this moment, down to the hot chocolate and popcorn, has been a fantasy for her, and she just can't help nudging it towards reality. Nash defines grace as allowing moments like this to "just happen" and encourages her readers to do the same. But she didn't allow the moment to happen - as soon as her youngest, portrayed as the non-reader, finishes her snack, mom prompts her to "pick a book and come read next to me."

If anything, the book served as a cautionary tale for me - when it comes to passions I want to pass on to my daughter, I'm reminded how hard it is to keep yourself in check. That said, Nash seems to have come to that same conclusion intellectually and can share it with her readers, but just finds it difficult to put into practice herself (a very human trait). I gave it three stars because the author provides good tips like keeping a journal of the books your children enjoy, and great reference lists of titles and authors.

Parents Need What This Book Provides -- Perspective & Laughs
By A Customer
As a mother of a six- and eight-year-old who have both approached reading very differently, this book was exactly what I needed -- which was a big deep breath! As I began to question whether "I was doing it right" and when I began to compare my kids to others, I started to panic. It reminded me of the envy and pride I felt when my kids were (or were not) the first ones in their play groups to walk, talk, toilet train, fill in the blank. But with reading it's worse, because you feel like it's something you can and should control and "do better." So, Jennie Nash's book was a welcome pat on the back, arm around the shoulder and loving vote of confidence that I haven't (and I am not going to) screw this up. It's going to be fine and I have to remember to let the love of books, reading and the spoken word happen in its own sweet time. This lesson has helped me in other areas with my kids as well.

Magical Mystery Tours: My Life with the Beatles, by Tony Bramwell, Rosemary Kingsland

"If you want to know anything about the Beatles, ask Tony Bramwell. He remembers more than I do."- Sir Paul McCartney to Donovan in a January 2002 interview

Tony Bramwell's remarkable life began in a postwar Liverpool suburb, where he was childhood friends with three of the Beatles long before they were famous. And by the time he caught up with George Harrison on the top of a bus going to check out "The Beatles, direct from Hamburg"--one of whom George turned out to be--Tony was well on his way to staying by them for every step of their meteoric rise.

If anything needed taking care of, Tony Bramwell was the man the Beatles called, the man they knew they could trust. His story has been sought after for years, and now, here it is, full of untold stories and detailing with an insider's shrewd eye the Apple empire's incomparable rise, Brian Epstein's frolics, Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters, Phil Spector's eccentric behavior, and new stories about Yoko Ono, the Stones, and the life--his life.

From developing the first Beatle music videos to heading Apple Films, and from riding bikes and trading records with George Harrison to working and partying with everyone from the Beatles to Hendrix, Ray Charles, and The Who, Tony's life really did (and does) encompass a who's who of rock.

His story reveals fresh insights into the Beatles' childhoods and families, their early recordings and songwriting, the politics at Apple, and Yoko's pursuit of John and her growing influence over the Beatles' lives. And it uncovers new information about the Shea Stadium concert footage, John Lennon's late-night "escapes," and more. From the Cavern Club to the rooftop concert, from the first number one to the last, and from scraps of song lyrics to the discovery of the famous Mr. Kite circus poster, Tony Bramwell really did see it all.

Conversational, direct, and honest, the ultimate Beatles insider finally shares his own version of the frantic and glorious ascent of four boys from Liverpool lads to rock and roll kings.

From Publishers Weekly
Bramwell, a longtime Beatles business associate and childhood friend, offers a fond, intimate portrait of the Fab Four. His often gossipy recollections illuminate the players from their days as young "scousers" in working-class Liverpool to their formation as a group, and from their exhausting early stints in Hamburg to their astonishing stardom. Readers will be surprised to learn how much money the Beatles left on the table owing to the bad deals that Brian Epstein, the Beatles' respected but conflicted manager, made. Still, the group remained fiercely loyal to Epstein, who made them—and many others—rich beyond their dreams, cutting deals in what was then uncharted business territory. Throughout, Paul comes off as down to earth, Ringo as sophisticated and "Hollywood," and George, charming and gentle, if a bit unusual. Not surprisingly, it is John who piques the most interest. Bramwell blisters Yoko Ono, "the Princess of Darkness," and suggests that either she brainwashed John or that he was suffering from mental illness. Although music historians and Beatles collectors may feel they know the story, Bramwell's memoir is much more than Beatles history. Energetically written, this is a vivid and intensely personal look at not only the Beatles but at a storybook trip from the docks of Liverpool to swinging London and the very epicenter of the British invasion. Review
"'If you want to know anything about The Beatles, ask Tony Bramwell.' - Paul McCartney"

From the Inside Flap

“Tony Bramwell’s résumé is full and so is his account of life from Liverpool to Broadway and all stops in between. This telling memoir of the music life is a great read, filled with up-close stories of the Beatles and other legends that will make you laugh and most of all remember, with clarity and joy.”
- Larry Kane, author of Ticket to Ride

“The Beatles’ universe has been filled with many outsiders trying to get in. Tony Bramwell was one of the very few insiders. Trrusted and depended on from the earliest days, he saw it all. And he remembered it, too. Tony is blessed with the same sardonic Liverpool humor as his famous mates, and his book is one of the most eagerly-awaited chronicles of the Beatles era.”
- Martin Lewis, Beatles scholar

an excellent read
By C. Davis
This has been some year with some excellent Beatle books being published. This year three books on the Beatles have been published that are, to some extent, companions of each other. Tony Bramwell's book, Tony Barrow's Book and Geoffrey Ellis' book. Each of the authors were part of the second or third ring (Mal Evans and Neil Aspinal being part of the "first ring") of Beatle intimates who were part of "the back room boys" helping the Beatles in their business and other endeavours. Of the three, Tony Bramwell comes over as the more jovial character who enjoyed himself and had fun during the swinging sixties, dating many girls and so on. Of all the books I have read about the Beatles (50 plus), I think only Tony Bramwell, Richard Dilillo and Derek Taylor come out enjoying themselves and having little, if any, resentment.

Tony Bramwell was originally a friend of George Harrison's and graduated to working with Brian Epstein at NEMS and then became a Record Promoter at Apple. It is very hard to argue against his impressions - because that it was what they are - his impressions of what happened and what life was like during his tenure at NEMS and Apple - it is not a history book. There are criticisms of certain factual errors in the book, and I do not think that is so important - what is invaluable and what makes it an absolute must for all Beatle fans is his description of the behavior of the Beatles and their times during the 60's.

There are criticisms posted here that Tony is too "pro Paul". I think such criticisms are unwarranted and imply that the author has a grudge against John. Simply put, John was no saint - and it's the human, eclectic and contradictory qualities in John which, today, so many of his fans, including me, find interesting (in fact far more interesting than certain other members of the fab four). If John gets a "bad press" from this book, then please also read the other books, referred to above - the recollections of Geoff Ellis and Tony Barrow are not too different (and even Derek Taylor, in his wonderful, but out of print book, "As Time Goes By", alludes to the difficulty in handling John when Yoko comes on the scene). I would also add, for those who criticize this book as being "anti John" that they should also read the John Lennon Rolling Stone interview (published as a book under the title "Lennon Remembers") where the great man himself admitted he (as well as the other Beatles) were complete b******* to their entourage (especially Neil and Mal). For those who think the book is "too pro Paul", I would suggest reading Alistair Taylor's book who balances matters by revealing the lack of any support Paul gave him when Klein dumped him (or alternatively read Peter Brown's book).

All in all Tony Bramwell's book is very good, well written and well worth reading. BTW, for those advanced Beatlemanicas out there it is interesting to compare Tony Bramwell's description of his visit, with Paul and Derek Taylor, to a pub, one summers day in 1968, to the village of Harold with Derek Taylor's description of the same event in his book "As time goes by".

Lastly, for those who are interested in the life of Brian Epstein, this book gives an excellent description and wonderful recollections of the man, which, combined with the recollections of Tony Barrow and Geoffrey Ellis in their respective books, probably gives the best rounded picture of the man (indeed, I think you'll learn more about Brian Epstein than you will about the Beatles from those three books).

This book gave me an appreciation of the days of their lives musically, socially, personally. I felt like I was sitting in a pub with Tone for a drink and he is telling me stories about the Beatles and other musicians. I enjoyed his company.

Well written, funny account of the Beatle scene et al. by a inner circle friend
By F. A. Lage Filho
Tony (or Tone,as the fabs used to call him) Bramwell have funny, insightful memories from his time with the Beatles and other rock/pop acts, as demonstrated by this volume. Whoever is interested in many previously untold Beatle facts and adventures from their heydays as the World's top band should go for this book. Further, there's plenty about other pop stars from the sixties and beyond - people that Tony used to be friends with and also their agent/representative.

The Confession (Yalta Boulevard Quintet), by Olen Steinhauer

Eastern Europe, 1956: Comrade Inspector Ferenc Kolyeszar, who is a proletariat writer in addition to his job as a state militia homicide detective, is a man on the brink. Estranged from his wife, whom he believes is cheating on him with one of his colleagues, and frustrated by writer's block, Ferenc's attention is focused on his job. But his job is growing increasingly political, something that makes him profoundly uncomfortable.

When Ferenc is asked to look into the disappearance of a party member's wife and learns some unsavory facts about their lives, the absurdity of his position as an employee of the state is suddenly exposed. At the same time, he and his fellow militia officers are pressed into service policing a popular demonstration in the capital, one that Ferenc might rather be participating in. These two situations, coupled with an investigation into the murder of a painter that leads them to a man recently released from the camps, brings Ferenc closer to danger than ever before-from himself, from his superiors, from the capital's shadowy criminal element.

The Confession is a fantastic follow-up to Olen Steinhauer's brilliant debut, The Bridge of Sighs, and it guarantees to advance this talented writer on his way to being one of the premiere thriller writers of a generation.

Review

“Postwar Eastern Europe chillingly evoked by a storyteller... who understands the relentless conjunction between character and suspense.... Good enough to suggest comparison with Graham Greene; place the author in the forefront of contemporary suspense writers...” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“This is a gripping and fully realized portrayal of a man whose strengths, flaws, struggle, and ultimate fall are emblematic of the fate of Eastern Europe itself. While skillfully developed, the intricacies of plot, particularly the story behind the diverse crimes, fade to relative insignificance in light of Ferenc's heartrending 'confession'. Densely atmospheric and strongly recommended...” ―Library Journal (starred review)

“Beyond delivering an involving police procedural in an intriguing setting, the author relates with spare irony his narrator's psychological journey.... [The Confession] is enthusiastically recommended for fans of well-made hard-boiled and noir fiction.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“Bigger in scope... than The Bridge of Sighs [...Steinhauer's original and mesmerizing first mystery]... the novel makes readers wonder just what Steinhauer will do for the next book in his series...” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

By Douglas S. Wood
The Confession, Olen Steinhauer's second novel set in an unnamed post-war Eastern European country, is a complex multi-layered work - part police procedural, part erotic romance, part noir mystery, part reflection on totalitarian excesses. That's a lot to fit into 326 pages, but Steinhauer deftly manages to pull it off.

Set in 1956, The Confession centers on Ferenc Kolyeszar, a member of a state police unit (the People's Militia) in the Capital, but also an author with connections to the underground literary community. Neighboring Hungarians are experimenting with freedom and pulling away from Moscow until that revolt is brutally repressed. During sympathetic protests in the Capital, the commissar-like Russian Kaminsky puts the police unit in the uncomfortable and unfamiliar role of repressor. Ferenc is less than fully cooperative.

At the same time, Ferenc's partner pursues a seemingly fruitless investigation of an apparent suicide with links to the art world while another member of the unit digs into the unsolved murder of a colleague who had been investigating a rape and murder that others would as soon left alone. Ferenc's own investigation of the disappearance of the beautiful young wife of a powerful industrialist takes an unexpected turn.

Ferenc's marriage is failing and he suspects his police partner is cuckolding him. He takes to heavy drinking and spending nights away from home. Multiple pressures build on Ferenc until he takes some decidedly rash actions.

Steinhauer pulls the various strands of the story together. His close examination of the brutality inside a forced labor camp for political prisoners is both chilling and brilliant. The closing forty pages were as good an ending as I have read in quite some time - a 'wow'. Highly recommended.

Worth the Investment
By ZenReader
Of the four novels in this series I have read this one takes the greatest commitment. The first 75 pages seem to stumble along with little connection to a central plot --at one point Comrade Inspector Ferenc Kolyeszar discusses the death of plot and I really started to worry --but almost out of nowhere a strong and emotional story with all the crime and politics you could ask for emerges. The end makes the book worth while. If you get it. Stick with it.

Great book
By James L. Bumbalo
I can't believe no one else has reviewed this book. It's a fantastic thriller. If you like Alan Furst, you'll enjoy this book. The writing is eloquent and atmospheric and the story is enthralling. The first book in this series, "The Bridge of Sighs," is also very good. I can't wait to read the remaining books by Steinhauer, who certainly deserves to be much better known and read.
