The Magdalen Martyrs (Jack Taylor Series), by Ken Bruen

Jack Taylor is walking the delicate edge of a sobriety he doesn't trust when his phone rings. He's in debt to a Galway tough named Bill Cassell, what the locals call a "hard man." Bill did Jack a big favor a while back; the trouble is, he never lets a favor go unreturned.

Jack is amazed when Cassell simply asks him to track down a woman, now either dead or very old, who long ago helped his mother escape from the notorious Magdalen laundry, where young wayward girls were imprisoned and abused. Jack doesn't like the odds of finding the woman, but counts himself lucky that the task is at least on the right side of the law.

Until he spends a few days spinning his wheels and is dragged in front of Cassell for a quick reminder of his priorites. Bill's goons do a little spinning of their own, playing a game of Russian roulette a little too close to the back of Jack's head. It's only blind luck and the mercy of a god he no longer trusts that land Jack back on the street rather than face down in a cellar with a bullet in his skull. He's got one chance to stay alive: find this woman.

Unfortunately, he can't escape his own curiosity, and an unnerving hunch quickly turns into a solid fact: just who Jack's looking for, and why, aren't nearly what they seem.

The Magdalen Martyrs, the third Galway-set novel by Edgar, Barry, and Macavity finalist and Shamus Award-winner Ken Bruen, is a gripping, dazzling story that takes the Jack Taylor series to explosive new heights of suspense.

From Publishers Weekly
If not as explosive as The Guards (2003) or The Killing of the Tinkers (2004), Edgar finalist Bruen's third Jack Taylor noir mystery-thriller crackles with his trademark tough-guy bravado. While Taylor struggles to stay on the wagon, he agrees to do a favor for Galway gangster Bill Cassell, who wants him to track down Rita Monroe, one of the martyrs of the title—unwed mothers sent into the care of the church and terribly mistreated, often by the nuns in charge of them. Cassell pushes Taylor hard to find Monroe, but Taylor's need for alcohol gets in the way. And as usual in a Bruen novel, his employer's motives aren't what they seem, violence springing naturally out of the disconnect. Along the way, Taylor sleeps with a client's mother, attends a good friend's funeral and loses his entire library. He often seems to float and drift, less driven by his demons than distracted by them. Still, readers will appreciate Bruen's trademark stripped-down noir poetry, his superbly rendered sense of place and his evocative portrait of a person balanced on the razor's edge.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In his third case, Galwegian ex-cop Jack Taylor--The Guards (2002), The Killing of the Tinkers (2003--buries some old friends and enemies while meeting some intriguing new ones, thanks to the addition of pills to his coterie of demons (booze, cocaine, and books). This time Jack's progress toward self-destruction is slowed both by a desultory search for a fallen angel linked to a hellish Catholic laundry and by his probe into the black habits of a sexually voracious widow. The series' real draw, though, has never been the story lines; rather, it's the eclectic, lyrical screeds pouring forth from the narrator's ruined heart. Some readers may balk at Taylor's constant literary references (in the midst of a beating, he descants on Henry Green, a "writers' writer's writer"), but these allusions are fueled by the same hard spiritual and physical thirst for sublimity that make him such a compelling existential antihero, not to mention a handy readers' advisor. Suffice it to say that fans of Roddy Doyle, James Sallis, Samuel Beckett, Irvine Welsh, Frederick Exley, Patrick McCabe, George Pelecanos, Ian Rankin, and Chuck Palahniuk will all find something to like, love, or obsess over in this stiff shot of evil chased with heartbreaking irony. Highly recommended. David Wright

"What Would I be Doing with Concepts Like Redemption?"
By Gary Griffiths
Raw, brutal, and unrepentant, Ken Bruen rips another bleak but gripping tale of the unlikely hero Jack Taylor, the alcoholic and well-read ex-Guard of Galway, Ireland. The title refers to the Magdalen laundry, a sweatshop for unwed young mother's run by Ireland's ubiquitous Catholic Church. Bill Cassell, a notorious Galway hard guy, calls on Jack to return a favor. Cassell's mother, is turns out, was a "Maggie", one of the girls abused in this infamous laundry and Cassell wants Jack to track down a woman who was supposedly kind to mum in those dark days.

Simple and straightforward - everything that Bruen's writing is not. Ken Bruen's power is not in the plot, but in the delivery. If poetry could be written with a broken-off beer bottle, this would be the end result. While told in the author's patented sparse prose liberally peppered with bullet-point thoughts - as if not to be bothered wasting the reader's time for the effort and thought required for sentences and paragraphs - Bruen manages to weave a tale of staggering complexity, a thoughtful and unforgettable story of Irish culture, the Church, despair, and the depths to which human nature can plunge. Vicariously through Taylor, Bruen neatly skewers the Church while at the same time reverently finding strength and some peace under cathedral's roofs, a pardox inescapable but defining in Bruen's works.

One word of advice: while certainly not required to be read in sequence, "The Magdalen Martyrs" lays some important groundwork for the storylines in the equally powerful sequels, "The Dramatist" and "Priest". But in whatever order you chose, just read them - Ken Bruen continues to set new standards for crime fiction which have already influenced a tight circle of talented new writers - Swierczynski, Huston, Stella among them - Bruen's fiction will be regarded as the classics of our days just as Chandler, Thompson, Hammet, and McBain are revered today.

Catherine the Great: Love, Sex, and Power, by Virginia Rounding

Dutiful daughter, frustrated wife, passionate lover, domineering mother, doting grandmother, devoted friend, tireless legislator, generous patron of artists and philosophers--the Empress Catherine II, the Great, was all these things, and more. Her reign, the longest in Russian Imperial history, lasted from 1762 until her death in 1796; during those years she built on the work begun by her most famous predecessor, Peter the Great, to establish Russia as a major European power and to transform its new capital, St Petersburg, into a city to rival Paris and London in the beauty of its architecture, the glittering splendor of its Court and the magnificence of its art collections. Yet the great Catherine was not even Russian by birth and had no legitimate claim to the Russian throne; she seized it and held on to it, through wars, rebellions and plagues, by the force of her personality, by her charm and determination, and by an unshakable belief in her own destiny.

This is the story of Catherine the woman, whom power alone could never satisfy, for she also wanted love, affection, friendship and humor. She found these in letter-writing, in grandchildren, in gardens, architecture and greyhounds--as well as in a succession of lovers which gave rise to salacious rumors throughout Europe. The real Catherine, however, was more interesting than any rumor.

Using many of Catherine's own words from her voluminous correspondence and other documents, as well as contemporary accounts by courtiers, ambassadors and foreign visitors, Virginia Rounding penetrates the character of this most powerful, fascinating and surprisingly sympathetic of eighteenth-century women.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This lengthy biography of Russia's greatest female ruler is by no means as salacious as the subtitle suggests, but this sympathetic portrayal certainly focuses on Catherine's private life. British scholar Rounding (Les Grandes Horizontales) relies on memoirs, private letters and previous monographs as she details how, after dissolution of the unhappy marriage that brought Catherine (1729–1798) to Russia from Germany, the empress juggled her relationships with men as she attempted to thrust Russia into the modern era and make it a European power. Indeed, Rounding offers an intriguing (and partially convincing) thesis that Catherine was most effective as a ruler when she was satisfied in her private life. That life was never dull: Catherine's final lover was 40 years her junior, helping to give rise to wild but untrue rumors about her sexual appetite. Rounding's prose matches the excitement of its subject, with vivid portrayals of the late 18th-century Russian court and the machinations of Catherine and those around her. Readers looking for more scholarly and analytical treatments of Catherine's policies and Russia during this time might want to look at biographies by Isabel de Madariaga and John T. Alexander, but Rounding's work will appeal to Catherine-philes and those interested in women's history. 16 pages of color photos. (Feb.)

One of Russia's most powerful rulers -- who wasn't even Russian.
By Rebecca Huston
It's one of those surprises of history that one of Russia's most effective rulers was a woman, and not Russian at all. The Russian Empire after the death of Peter the Great in the early eighteenth century became a 'winner-take-all, free-for-all' between various descendants of his. By the time that the daughter of Peter, Elizabeth Petrovna, seized power and imprisoned the infant Ivan VI in a remote fortress, there were only two claimants to the Romanov crown left -- herself, and her nephew, a teenager named Peter. Clearly, the best solution to further palace coups and possible uprisings was to establish a clear line of succession.

A bride must be found and as quickly as possible. A Roman Catholic would not be acceptable, but a German Protestant princess who would not mind converting to Russian Orthodoxy just might work. And for one princess in particular, Empress Elizabeth had a soft-spot in her heart. Once, Elizabeth had been engaged to a German prince, but when he had died, the marriage did not happen. This princeling, however, had a sister -- Johanna, who in turn married the prince of Anhalt-Zerbst, and she had a daughter who was just a year younger than Grand Duke Peter.

Sophie Fredericka Auguste was a lively, intelligent teenager when she arrived in Russia with her mother for a closer look by the Empress. She wasn't exactly pretty, but she had a pair of beautiful dark blue eyes, a quick mind, and a willingness to please. Both the Empress and the Grand Duke liked what they saw, and after some careful negotiations, Sophie converted to Orthodoxy, and became Catherine Alexeyevna, and married Peter. The one problem was Johanna, who kept trying to steal the show from her daughter, dabbled in political machinations, and quite nearly ruined it all for her daughter before being returned to Germany.

But married life wasn't that easy for young Catherine. Not only did she have to deal with Empress Elizabeth's whims and capricious nature, her husband Peter was less than ideal as a spouse. For one, he wasn't that eager to consummate the marriage, prefering to scrape away at his violin, and indulging his whims for playing with soldiers, both toy and real ones. Indeed, as years passed, Catherine found herself in a very unenviable state -- no heir, and an ever irritated Empress, along with a husband who cared nothing for her.

There was really only one solution -- Catherine focused her mind on educating herself in politics and Russia, determined to become entirely Russian, and cutting off her homeland. She also used every scrap of charm and intelligence that she had, slowly gathering a coterie of supporters and finally managing to get her husband to make the marriage a reality. But that didn't mean the battle was over -- both of her infant children, Paul and Anna, were taken away from her and raised by Empress Elizabeth, and Grand Duke Peter started to consider divorcing Catherine. Finally, when Peter became Tsar, Catherine knew she had to act to save herself.

How she took power for herself, and then managed to keep it despite attempted revolts, various pretenders, war with the Ottoman empire, and still managed to be an object of admiration for the time, well, that's what makes this biography so interesting to read. Rounding takes not a political, nor exactly a chronological, look at Catherine the Great's life, but a personal one. Using Catherine's own memoirs and letters, along with the contemporary accounts of those in her life, she gives a very personal look at a powerful woman, who wasn't afraid of taking very big bites of life.

Her passions ranged from her lovers -- Gregory Orlov and Potemkin among them, to the arts -- the Hermitage, one of the most fabulous collections of art in the world, to the palaces of St. Petersburg and Tsarskoye Selo are mostly her creation and inspiration. But as well as her enjoyment of the arts, there was also a very ruthless side to the Empress. She may or may not have had a hand in the murder of her husband after his abdication -- how much Catherine was involved is still a question today, and she would discard a lover with a 'customary' present of land, serfs, and fine gifts, with the unspoken understanding that the affair was over.

But throughout the story I also got to see some of the personality and vibrancy of Catherine II through her letters and descriptions of her life. One surprise was the relationship that she had with her son, who would become Tsar Paul -- while there isn't much of a maternal love there, she was genuinely interested in what he was doing, and never did seem to wish him hard. On the other hand, she took physical and emotional charge of his two eldest children, Alexander and Constantine, in much the same way that Empress Elizabeth had taken Paul away from her.

Rounding's narrative is full of life and insight, and compared to most dusty and dry biographies, this one satisfies on several levels. I can happily recommend it for anyone interested in either Russian history, or how a woman in what was very much a man's world, managed to become one of its most powerful leaders. And yes, the horse myth is finally put to rest, and I hope, for good.

As well as two inserts of colour photos, there are extensive notes, bibliographies, sources and index to help in further research. A genealogical chart helps to sort out the complicated relationships of the Russian rulers in the eighteenth century. The images are particularly fine in this one, and have several paintings that I have not seen reproduced elsewhere.

Recommended.

A colorful and in-depth look at Catherine the Great
By Bookreporter
The confluence of sex and power politics goes back at least to ancient Egypt. It is doubtful, however, that it was ever practiced more openly or with more decisive results than during the reign of Catherine II (Catherine the Great) over the Russian empire.

In this book Virginia Rounding has tried gamely to balance the two forces by concentrating on Catherine herself and the small army of friends and foes who surrounded her during her reign from 1762 until her death in 1796. It is a long and complex story, told here in exhaustive detail. Rounding freely admits that history has yet to reach a final consensus on Catherine. She lays out the evidence for 500-plus pages, concluding rather tentatively in her very last sentence that her subject does indeed deserve the honorific "Great." But it is, as Britisher Rounding might say, a near thing.

On the plus side, Catherine was a shrewd and resourceful ruler who introduced badly needed reforms into her empire's governmental structure and educational system. She fostered the arts as one of history's great collectors of paintings. She introduced the practice of inoculation against disease into Russian medical practice, corresponded with Voltaire and had the French encyclopediste philosopher Denis Diderot as one of her conversational partners. She had an enlightened attitude on the need to keep religion and politics separate. She was a wit, a fine writer and a canny judge of character. Her subjects in general loved her, and those who did not had the good sense to watch their backs.

But behind all this there lay a compulsive sexual adventurer, unfaithful wife and shameless player of boudoir politics. Rounding lists a round dozen of men who served successively (and openly) as her "favorites." She was at least aware of, if not directly complicit in, the murder of her first husband, and she took great pleasure in ruling arbitrarily the lives of her own family and those in her inner circle of advisors.

Rounding's book gets off to a ponderous start. Up to the time when Catherine becomes empress --- about one-third of the way through the book --- it is a hard slog for the reader, choked with exhaustive and unnecessary detail about court ceremonials, royal pilgrimages and amusements. We learn how many footmen were involved in every trip, what everyone wore and where they stood when in the royal presence. Perhaps Rounding is influenced by her own country's longstanding fascination with such details --- but here the narrative is slowed down unnecessarily.

When the German-born princess finally does ascend the throne, the pace quickens as affairs of state crowd onstage and the parade of royal lovers begins to defile past. Of the dozen "favorites," two seem to have had lasting influence on Catherine's policies as well as on her sexual life. Count Grigory Orlov remained a valued advisor and operative for many years after he left her bed; and the best known of them all was the famous Grigory Potemkin, on whom she depended for political advice until the day he died. And each "favorite," upon dismissal, was handsomely rewarded with gifts of estates, jewels and serfs by the thousands.

For the general reader, the most surprising revelation is this: The story of Potemkin erecting false villages along the Dnieper River to trick Catherine into believing that all was well with the peasantry --- the exploit that gave us the still-current phrase "Potemkin village" --- is a myth. Rounding dismisses it with a contemptuous wave of her literary hand.

The process of choosing these "favorites" was very public. Foreign diplomats commented on it at length in their dispatches, speculating on what the ascendancy of one or the other might mean for Russian policy. Rounding makes gleeful use of the comments on such matters by a succession of British, French and other diplomats.

The author threads her way through the vast complex corridors of Russian Tsarist power with practiced ease and often points out parallels to later ages --- she reports that Catherine was, among other things, a master of "spin."

You will learn more than you need to know about a lot of trivial aspects of Catherine the Great's world in this book. But the story itself and its wildly colorful cast of characters are worth following to the end.

A Most Amazing Woman
By John Matlock
One of the more interesting characters in history, Catherine engineered a coup in 1762 that put her on the throne of Russia as she replaced her husband. From here she would rule Russia until her death, 34 years later. Her political accomplishments during those years are spactacular: wars fought and won, reorienting Russia from Asia to Europe, extending Russia's borders, expanding education and the arts.

At the same time her bedroom exploits became legendary around Europe. She had a succession of lovers that also seemed to serve as political advisors. It seems that these lovers were selected by Catherine based on the recommendations of members of the court. It is important to remember that this was a time when in most of the world women were basically considered chattels.

This is a well researched book on a subject that provides a balanced look at Catherine, chronicling her strengths as well as her weaknesses. Her conclusion is that the soubriquet 'the Great' is justified.

Time Was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn at Shakespeare & Co., by Jeremy Mercer

Wandering through Paris's Left Bank one day, poor and unemployed, Canadian reporter Jeremy Mercer ducked into a little bookstore called Shakespeare & Co. Mercer bought a book, and the staff invited him up for tea. Within weeks, he was living above the store, working for the proprietor, George Whitman, patron saint of the city's down-and-out writers, and immersing himself in the love affairs and low-down watering holes of the shop's makeshift staff. Time Was Soft There is the story of a journey down a literary rabbit hole in the shadow of Notre Dame, to a place where a hidden bohemia still thrives.

From Publishers Weekly
Mercer explains his memoir's title this way: "Hard time goes slowly and painfully and leaves a man bitter.... Time at Shakespeare and Company was as soft as anything I'd ever felt." His graceful narrative follows struggling writers as they live on potato soup and dreams at Paris's famous expatriate bookshop. Mercer, a former Ottowa Citizen crime reporter, finds himself at Shakespeare one gloomy Parisian day in 1999, in his late 20s, with not much money and no plans for the future, trying to evade some angry newspaper sources back home. With little fanfare, he is taken into the store by its owner, George Whitman, a kindly yet scatterbrained man, who explains, "I run a socialist utopia that masquerades as a bookstore." Mercer begins working as an eager unpaid employee, running errands, acting as a referee between the writers who hang out there and ringing up sales (it's no B&N superstore: when Mercer asks where the credit card machine is, he's told, "Dude, Shakespeare and Company doesn't even have a telephone. Of course we don't take credit cards"). Mercer portrays the assorted characters and their adventures with an eye for detail and a wry sense of humor. Francophile book lovers will enjoy his finely crafted memoir.

From The New Yorker
As a crime reporter in Canada, Mercer received a threatening call after naming an underworld source in a book. Fearing for his life, he quit his job and flew to Paris. As his funds dwindled, he stumbled upon Shakespeare and Co., a small bookstore on the Left Bank across from Notre-Dame, and spent nine months living rent-free in the upstairs library, along with a rotating cast of backpackers and aspiring writers. Despite Mercer's predilection for melodramatic flourishes, the memoir ably captures a romanticized version of the bum's life, with elaborate schemes to scrape up money (like buying designer handbags on behalf of Asian tourists) and nights spent drinking wine and swapping stories. But the real star is the eccentric and charming bookstore proprietor, George Whitman, who remarks, after losing a stack of two-hundred-franc notes to nest-building mice, "At least it's not the books."

From Booklist
Penniless and hungry, Mercer stumbled into a seedy bookstore on the Left Bank of Paris to escape the rain. He ended up staying there for four months. The bookstore is the legendary Shakespeare and Company, established by George Whitman, whose motto is "Take what you need, and give what you can." Using the name of the store founded by Sylvia Beach and publisher of Joyce's Ulysses, Whitman vowed to always have a pot of soup on the stove and a bed to share. For decades, wandering writers have found their way to his store for a meal and a bed before moving on. In Mercer's case, fleeing a death threat brought on by his crime reporting in Ottawa, Canada, he finds much more than shelter. Soon after his arrival, he becomes Whitman's confidant and sometime advisor. From the other residents, he learns the cheapest places to eat, free showers, bars that stay open all night, and deep, abiding friendships. His experiences change his life forever, and his stories will leave the reader wishing for such an idyllic sojourn. Elizabeth Dickie

Romance and Reality in Literary Paris
By Paris fan
In this memoir of his stay at Shakespeare & Co., Jeremy Mercer skillfully uses his talents as an extraordinary writer-storyteller. He captures the Romantic notions of all who go (or long to go) to Paris to experience the mythical pasts of the writers and artists who have flocked there for hundreds of years, and balances these notions with the often harsh realities of living the life of the starving artist. These experiences are couched in the Romantic life of George Whitman, the bookstore's founder, who in his free-wheeling life as an ex-patriate with all of its ups and downs, must ultimately face the realities of life as an aging rebel, grappling with the future of his haven - the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore.

Sure catches the scene as I glimpsed it
By Paul Rogat Loeb
I never lived or worked at Shakespeare but a friend did twenty-five years ago, and five years ago my wife and I dropped into the store to browse and follow her trail. When I mentioned that I knew Howard Zinn, legendary owner George Whitman immediately invited us to stay at the bookstore. (We'd already paid at the wonderful hotel next door, Hotel Esmerelda, so passed on staying there, but took George up on sharing Christmas Dinner, where we met Jeremy Mercer and a moveable feast of other great people. It was the most memorable evening of our trip, and one of the richest evening's of conversation I've ever had--all part of the ambience of the store.

I just spent all evening reading Mercer's book and it was great. We only got that brienf glimpse of Shakespeare & Co but from what I could tell Mercer captured the mileu wonderfully, especially the amazing George Whitman. It's a cliche to talk about a global homogenizized culture. Shakespeare & Co really is part of the antidote, in all its messy glory, dirty dishes and all. And an amazing bookstore on top of that. So thanks to Jeremy for capturing all this.

Sisters: Catholic Nuns and the Making of America, by John J. Fialka

In the 1800s, nuns moved west with the frontier, building hospitals and schools in immigrant communities. They provided aid during the Chicago fire, cared for orphans and prostitutes during the California Gold Rush, and brought professional nursing skills to field hospitals on both sides of the Civil War.

In the 1900s, nuns built the nation's largest private school and hospital systems, and brought the Catholic Church into the Civil Rights movement. As their numbers began to decline in the 1970s, many sisters were forced to take professional jobs as lawyers, probation workers, and hospital executives because their salaries were needed to support older nuns, many of whom lacked a pension system. Currently there are about 65,000 sisters in America, down from 204,000 in 1968. Their median age is sixty-nine.

Nuns became the nation's first cadre of independent, professional women. Some nursed, some taught, and many created and managed new charitable organizations, including large hospitals and colleges. Sweeping in its scope and insight, Sisters reveals the spiritual wealth that these women invested in America.

From Publishers Weekly
When Wall Street Journal reporter Fialka set out to tell the story of America's Catholic nuns, he knew he faced a daunting challenge. Church histories contained little about the women he calls "America's first feminists," though they built 800 hospitals and more than 10,000 private schools. Since doing them justice would require volumes, Fialka decided to use one large order, the Sisters of Mercy, as a model, mentioning some of the other 400 communities where appropriate. The approach makes for a well-told history of these remarkable women from the time of their arrival in America in 1790 to the present, when their numbers have dwindled considerably. Fialka's account is rich with anecdotes, many told by the sisters themselves; however, his reporting makes this more than a sentimental history. The author ferrets out statistics and interviews experts to find out why these women have begun to disappear from Catholic life. In his look toward a seemingly bleak future, he includes several hopeful notes, including a chapter about a community in Nashville that is flourishing with its traditional approach to religious life. The product of a Catholic school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Fialka sprinkles his account with personal recollections and writes sympathetically of a group that often has been maligned and caricatured. Nuns will appreciate his treatment of their lives, as will Catholics pondering a church with diminishing numbers of the women who helped shape it.

From Booklist
This fascinating study provides an overview of the enormous contribution Catholic nuns have made to the American educational, social, and cultural landscape. Although much has been written about the men that helped to shape the structure of the American Catholic Church, Fialka argues that it was women in general, and the nuns in particular, who were primarily responsible for extending the faith through hard work and practical means. Dubbing nuns "America's first feminists," he chronicles their journey westward, establishing a host of parochial schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions across a boisterous and wide-ranging frontier. In addition to educating and nursing several generations of Americans, the various orders of sisters also represented the first organized groups of women who operated and, in a limited sense, competed in a man's world. A spiritual vocation as well as an opportunity for personal fulfillment, the sisterhood offered a viable option for both pious and independent females. This engrossing glance backward at a rapidly disappearing breed of American churchwoman will appeal to both social historians and baby boomers educated by Catholic nuns. Margaret Flanagan

Review
“Fialka recovers . . . those thrilling days of yesteryear when flocks of sisters, many of them, like the men who laid the intercontinental railroad tracks, Irish immigrants, pushed beyond the settled boundaries of the 19th-century America to aid in the civilizing of a continent . . . These earlier nuns were mobile, risk-taking, entrepreneurial women who eventually established the largest private hospital network in the nation and the most extensive private school system in the world.” ―Kenneth L. Woodward, The New York Times Book Review

"Where have all the Sisters gone . . . "
By Raymond G. Meyers
Boy, if this isn't an eye-opener! Not a particularly scholarly treatise (thank God), the book nonetheless chronicles well the incredible story of the impact on our American history and way of life "the Sisters" have had. Living in the "heyday" of the 50's - early 60's, and having had the blessings of a parochial education, I was not only mesmerized by Fialka's exploration of the scope and breadth and depth of the impact nuns in America have had, but deeply saddened to get a fuller sense of the decline of this influence in our society. I'm no feminist, but if any women in our history deserve greater recognition and honor for what they contributed to our lives it's these women. Fialka's narrative bounces around a little, but he keeps you focused on the mostly selfless dedication many of these Sisters lived by. The stereotypical nun whacking your knuckles with a ruler obscures the realities Fialka chronicles in case after case of the love and devotion so many of these Sisters lavished on their students (or patients). His discussion of the causes of the decline of the Sisters as a force in our society cites numerous influences, not least of which were the upheavals in all corners of our social fabric in the mid-late-sixties, nor the disruption (my word) of the "Catholic eco-system" resulting from so much misguided interpretations of Vatican II doctrine. Good book. Read it, revel in your memories, and weep for its demise -- America's great loss.

Extremely interesting book, combines history and information
By Monica K. Van Ness
Sisters: Catholic Nuns and the Making of America is an
overview of the influence and contributions of nuns in the
vast American land. There are a few statistics, some
interviews, and a great deal of history. History can be
a very slow read. It can be to dense to wade through.
But Fialka does a great job of presenting history in a
way that is not only interesting, but also enjoyable to
read. The only sad part, of course, comes in the latter
part of the book when he writes of the decline of so
many of the sisterhoods. Some of the decline was fast and
intense, some has been slower - but all of it seems to
be painful. There are a few glimmers of hope, though.
Some of the work done by the Dominican Sisters of Nashville
and the Oblate Sisters of Providence is wonderful.

The Children's Hour: A Novel, by Marcia Willett

Marcia Willet's A Week in Winter and A Summer in the Country, her first two novels to be published in the United States, were welcomed enthusiastically by both eager readers and appreciative reviewers. Her new novel, The Children's Hour, will not only delight her current ardent fans, but will garner Marcia Willett a whole new circle of friends.

The Children's Hour is set in a big old rambling house overlooking the sea, where assorted small children listened as their mother read them a story. Theirs was an idyllic childhood, as they played on the beach and in the garden and woods, before the war--and other tragedies--disrupted their lives. Now, many years later, two of the sisters, Nest and Mina, still live at Ottercombe, their beautiful family home. There they delight in their splendid dogs, the gorgeous Devon countryside, and visits from Lyddie, their much-beloved niece.

But when their sister Georgie comes to stay, unwelcome memories of their shared childhood start to emerge. As a child, Georgie claimed to know all their secrets--secrets that she now wants to share. Georgie's revelations are a reminder of long-buried passions and promises and bring unexpected shocks to a new generation struggling with their own unruly hearts. A triumph of beautifully interwoven story lines and unfolding dramas, The Children's Hour will secure Marcia Willett's growing reputation as a world-class master storyteller.

She may not be as famous as Binchy or Pilcher, but British writer Willett is just as gifted at combining elements of romance and melodrama into compelling women's fiction. Stylistically, her writing mirrors Pilcher's, with a hint of subtlety suggesting more literary fiction, but her generational plots and sumptuous scene setting have all of Binchy's wide-ranging commercial appeal. The "children's hour" was the time when Lydia read to her six children at Ottercombe, the family home in Devon. It was a delightful childhood, but nothing could protect the children from war and personal tragedy. Memories of earlier times are still fresh for now-septuagenarian Nest and Mina, whose quiet life at Ottercombe is disturbed by the arrival of their eldest sister, Georgie, who despite encroaching senility knows all the family secrets and threatens to reveal them. Willett captures the sights, sounds, and smells of seaside Devon superbly, and her characters are just complex enough to draw us into the story and keep us there contentedly. A must for women's fiction readers. Emily Melton

Review
A novel which reminded me of L P Hartley's Eustace and Hilda trilogy. It is all about forgotten memories and secrets of childhood set in a beautiful old house in Devon. Both Nest and Mina, now elderly, live there still, but the children have flown the coop. They welcome them back for visits with their offspring, especially Lyddie, their niece who lives in Cornwall with her husband Liam. Then their sister Georgie comes for an extended stay: she is frail and malicious, with a failing memory, and starts to cause trouble. It is a warm novel with echoes of the past and an endearing simplicity. It makes for easy reading.

A dark and atmospheric novel of small town evil
By Bill
A dark and atmospheric novel of small town life and the evil that lives directly beneath the surface. It may have dragged a wee here and there, but it didn’t spin me out of the story and the slower interludes didn’t last long. Not that this is a fast novel to begin with…because it isn’t. It isn’t supposed to be. Mr. Clegg takes his time getting you familiar with the characters and the colorful backstory of Colony, West Virginia. And then all hell breaks loose...

Welcome home, Joe. We’ve been waiting. …All of us.

Another Delightful Offering from Amy and Monte
By Kathy Dannel Vitcak
The True Love Tarot is not only a celebration of the love Amy and Monte share, but a celebration of ALL love affairs. As always, the presentation is just lovely - packaged in a book-like box, the deck is nestled on the right hand side and the FULL COLOR book tucks neatly into the left side of the book-box. When I say FULL COLOR book, that is what I mean...every single page is rich with color and it has big glorious pictures - full page pictures of each Major Arcana card and half page pictures of the MInors!. What this says to me is no corners were cut in the production of this book. Love is an opulent, lavish emotion and the presentation of this set celebrates just that!

The deck is another one of Amy's exquisite tapestry gifts. In this deck the central figures are somewhat bigger than in previous decks, and many may find them easier to read with. But none of the detail is sacrificied, it is just a slightly bolder look. The Minor Arcana cards are not fully illustrated, but use the symbols of the suit; Roses, Shells, Gems and Wings. There are Keywords on each and every card, so complete knowledge of the Tarot is not really necessary to use the deck. The colors are rich and vibrant and the deck will reflect the energy you bring to the reading.

The book is a little masterpiece on its own. It is written in the style of a knowledgeable friend sitting with you, teaching you how to read the Tarot and gently nudging you through a reading. I love that style of writing!

The book will even tell you how to use the cards masterfuly for those dreaded YES and NO questions that plague Tarot Readers. "Will I meet the love of my life soon?" can finally be quickly answered - smiling here...

This is a delightful deck for those new to the Tarot and experienced Tarot readers will also find it a useful addition for those special "Romance Readings" that are called for so often. Personally, I can imagine every single teenaged girl I have ever known adoring this deck and having a blast with it for years! If you are looking for a fabulous Valentine's Day gift, don't delay, this is just the gift. Even for yourself.

Personally, I just love this deck. I find it lighthearted, sweet and yet full of advice and wit. It is a fun, useful deck that will delight you with insightful answers to heartfelt questions. A great addition to any collection.

Enjoy!!!

I really liked how the cards and the book are so compatible, so when I pull a card I feel very clear that what I am reading matches. I don't always get that... but this time I do. This is a wonderful set to add to your collection. I know I will read a lot with it for love is a question most people come in with in one form or another. Deni Richter T.S.

The True Love Tarot
By Janet Boyer
"True Love Tarot is a unique map and guidebook that can enable soul mates to find each other and lovers to overcome obstacles, even today when the world can sometimes appear to be as dark as a cloudy night. It will provide you with the means for getting in touch with the quiet voice within you that knows, without a doubt, what is best for your greatest good and highest joy." - From the companion book

For decades, the Enchanted Couple has created beautiful, accessible oracles intended to illuminate the truth within us all. Amy Zerner, an award-winning fabric collage artist, and Monte Farber, a psychic advisor with an engaging writing style, have teamed up once again to form their third Tarot deck: the True Love Tarot boxed set. The book and deck comes in a very attractive, sturdy box that's similar to a cigar box. When opening the cover of the box, the companion book is tucked into the left side via the back flap, while the right side features a hollowed out area to store your deck of cards (which is also in its own box.)

Formatted along the lines of traditional decks, the True Love Tarot is dedicated to finding, enhancing, and deepening the flow of love. A 78-card deck, the each card features one of Amy's colorful collages as well as a thematic keyword. The creators have divided the Minor Arcana into Shells (Water/Cups), Roses (Fire/Wands), Wings (Air/Swords), and Gems (Earth/Pentacles). The Court Cards are Princesses, Princes, Queens, and Kings, and the Majors follow traditional renderings.

The 161-page companion book displays a full-page image each card, as well as meanings for both upright and reversed positions. Monte has taken much thought and care in providing generous interpretations for both the Major and Minor Arcana. In addition to the thorough meanings, a unique feature of the companion book is a quick answer offered for those asking yes/no questions. Printed in full-color pastels, the pages reflect the colors that Amy and Monte have attributed to each of the suits: the Majors are purple, Roses are mauve, Shells are sage green, Swords are powder blue, and Gems are creamy gold.

Admittedly, these color and element attributions can get confusing. For some reason, I find myself leaning towards interpreting Shells as Earth/Pentacles and Roses as Water/Cups! The colors add to the confusion, especially since Air is usually associated with yellow, Earth with green, and Water with blue. When I see Roses, I think of emotions, relationships and love, so I have to remind myself that, in the True Love Tarot, Roses are associated with Fire...not Water.

Unlike the Enchanted Tarot or the Zerner/Farber deck, the Minor Arcana of True Love Tarot is non-illustrated. This means that each card displays the motif of the suit according to the card number. For example, the Six of Gems card shows six gems, the Four of Shells card shows four shells, and so on.

The card backings are fully reversible with a pastel magenta background and a burgundy filigree design. The card stock isn't very stiff, and the cards measure 5 ¼ by 3 ¼ inches. I've used them several times, and it looks like the edges are starting to lift, so I'm not sure they'd hold up well with rigorous treatment or use.

In addition to the lavish illustrations and card meanings, the companion book of the True Love Tarot provides twenty-two spells, rituals and enchantments to help you connect with Spirit, reinforce desires, and strengthen intention. Some of these magical rituals include:

* Attracting love
* Self-empowerment
* Relieving stress
* Ending a fight
* Opening up the heart chakra
* Overcoming loneliness
* Recovering from a broken heart
* Ending obsessive feelings
* Overcoming jealousy
* Releasing sadness
* Increasing self-esteem
* Ending a relationship
* Starting over

At the end of the book, Monte has listed the ABC's of love. For example:

C - Cultivate contentment in all circumstances. Self-doubt is the most daunting of obstacles that inhibit us on our quest for enlightenment. We can know true contentment when we embrace the present and stop struggling to escape insecurity, pain, and doubt.

S - Soulmates work on their relationships by working on themselves. You know you have found your soul mate when you enjoy just watching your partner live and when you desire to make your partnership work and to be there for each other in every way.

Y - You can change only yourself. You cannot change anyone else. You can, however, make sure you get involved with a person who desires change for the better. Devoting time to study or self-improvement will always enable you to improve your situation. The desire to grow is one of our most basic needs.

The True Love Tarot is an upbeat deck and companion book devoted to love, respect, and self-development. While the non-illustrated Minors could prove problematic for those who access intuition through images, the keywords and a personal numerological attribution system can aid in their interpretation. I did several readings with this deck and found the messages to be clear and accurate. Although love and relationships are the central theme of this deck, the cards themselves-as well as Monte's interpretations-aren't exclusively for this purpose.

The True Love Tarot radiates positive energy and lightheartedness, but doesn't shy away from the potentials and realities of relationship difficulties or personal hardship. The offered advice is always incisive, hopeful, and pro-active. If you have a strong Lover, Knight, or Princess archetype active in your psyche, you'll likely enjoy this deck. Those who do many relationship readings may also find the True Love Tarot a great resource for their oracular took-kit.

COOKING WITH JOY: THE 90/10 COOKBOOK (Chapter One)

As you know all too well if you've tried one diet after another in your quest to lose weight--from a pill-popping regimen to a protein-to-carb ratio--there is no magic formula for effortlessly shedding unwanted pounds. The only genuine, time-tested principle of healthy, long-term weight loss is to take in fewer calories than your body burns. That said, the best way to sustain a calorie-controlled diet is through portion control and cravings satisfaction. These must be perfectly balanced in order for a plan to be successful--portion control doesn't work in the long run if you constantly feel hungry and deprived.

To come up with a plan that would guarantee weight-loss success without that starved, weak feeling that frequently goes hand in hand with a "restrictive" diet, I created a weight-reduction regimen that would meet my clients' health needs while simultaneously satisfying their appetites. This is also a highly workable, satisfying plan to follow even if you don't need to lose weight. All of us, whether or not we want to lose weight, should take pride in what we put into our bodies. And if you are trying to coax your family into eating more healthfully, this may be just the inspiration you need to start cooking nutritious, delectable meals your partner and your children will love.

An Overview of the 90/10 Weight-Loss Plan

My original book, The 90/10 Weight-Loss Plan, was written for those who want to lose weight. The book presented three solid meal plans that promote fast, effective, long-term weight loss. Each plan was calculated to include all types of food in a healthy balance so you wind up feeling satisfied--and motivated to stick with it.

Many trendy fad diets focus on omitting entire food groups or on simply counting fat and/or carbohydrate grams. But 90/10 is a scientifically designed, flexible plan that allows for a substantial amount of personal choice. Each daily menu is calculated to provide generous amounts of nutrition, while still keeping the total calories low enough so that you will lose weight. Here's where my fun foods come in. About 10 percent of the calories in a typical day come from fun food choices, though the ratio can vary. In fact, it can vary from 0 to 20 percent, depending on which plan you follow and which fun foods you choose or don't choose to plug in. Fun foods are all portion controlled at 250 calories or fewer and include favorites such as chocolate, ice cream, potatoes, cookies, and more. Furthermore, each day I give the option of forgoing the fun food and instead adding 250 calories of healthier options. The choice is yours. You'll also note that some fun foods offer not just fun but nutrition as well. Frozen yogurt, cheese, nuts, and peanut butter are some of these foods that offer a double bonus. In this new book, packed with all types of delicious recipes, I also present healthier fun food options that offer nutrition along with indulgence--for example, homemade guacamole, a good source of monounsaturated fat as well as beta-carotene, and low-fat, low-sugar chocolate mousse, packed with calcium.

My food philosophy doesn't focus on exact math; instead it promotes an overall weight-loss strategy. It's a realistic food plan, one that works beautifully because it concentrates on the behavioral changes that are so important for permanent weight loss--changes that will indeed transform your life. Thanks to a balance of the foods you crave and the foods you need to be healthy and feel good, followers of the 90/10 plan feel satisfied both physically and emotionally. No matter what your dieting history, you'll soon discover that this is a plan you can commit to for life. The original meal plan (now with the recipes in this book) enables you to get all the nutrients your body needs and is designed to provide you with the most vitamins and minerals possible for the controlled amount of calories consumed.

The menus in The 90/10 Weight-Loss Plan are low in dietary cholesterol and saturated fat, and high in fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, all of which can help reduce your risk of heart disease and some cancers, promote healthy digestion, and improve circulation. Of course, the recipes in Cooking with Joy all follow suit. Once you start to follow the 90/10 plan, you'll most likely feel more positive and energetic. That's because you're feeding your body with the right mix of food, and you're in complete control. No more bouncing from restrictive plans to bingeing on "forbidden" foods. All the foods you need and crave are part of the program.

With the recipes in this book, I've done all the calorie crunching, so that every recipe is presented in portion-controlled servings. What's more, all the breakfast portions within a specific plan are calorie-equivalent, as are the lunches, dinners, and snacks. Thus, you never have to eat anything you don't like and you can certainly repeat recipes as often as you like. These recipes are all interchangeable with the menus and recipes in the fourteen-day meal plan outlined in my original book, as well as any other calorie-controlled plan you may be following. They are all healthy, delicious, and satisfying dishes to add to your repertoire of mealtime fare.

Because success is based on maximizing nutrition and controlling calories, you need to know the right amount of calories for your personal weight-loss goals. If you've followed my plan in the past, you're set. For newcomers, determine your appropriate caloric level by considering the following criteria.

How Many Calories Do You Need?

The fewest amount of calories recommended for good health is 1,200 per day. My 1,200-calorie plan is for women who either don't exercise or exercise two hours or fewer per week and don't work in a physically demanding job. Also, if you are postmenopausal and over age fifty, you might want to consider this plan as well. Short women, five foot two or less, with a small amount of weight to lose should also consider starting on this plan.

My 1,400-calorie plan works well for nearly all women. Consider this one if you have a moderately active lifestyle, if you are between the ages of eighteen and fifty, and/or if you have from two to fifty pounds to lose. The 1,600-calorie plan works well for nearly all men, although it may not be enough food for men taller than five foot six. Women above five foot six may also choose this plan, as taller people automatically have additional lean body mass and thus a higher baseline metabolism (more calories to play with). Even if you are shorter, if you are a diligent exerciser who works out at least five times per week, you may want to follow this plan, as it will help to fuel and optimize your vigorous workouts. My 1,800-calorie plan is for active men, and my 2,000-calorie plan is for tall men who are very active, as well as for other 90/10 followers who've already lost the weight and are determined to keep the pounds off but want a more liberal eating plan.

No matter which plan you opt to follow, remember that the 90/10 philosophy is not written in stone! Obviously, there will be days when you will go off your plan completely, either at a meal or at snacktime. My advice is: Don't give up on the entire day! Just count the excessive food as a "meal plus your fun food." Then carry on with healthful food choices. In fact, throw in some extra exercise to rid yourself of those extra calories and clear your head of any guilt or remorse.

What if you feel hungry or hypoglycemic while following the 90/10 plan? Certainly you can spread out your meals or add an extra snack when your body requires it. A small additional snack should not impede your weight-loss effort. Suggestions for reasonably sized snacks include a serving of fruit or a vegetable, a nonfat yogurt, or a slice of reduced-calorie whole wheat bread with a teaspoon of peanut butter or a slice of low-fat cheese. If you consistently feel hungry and light-headed, you may need to be eating more. Some people start at one calorie level and move to another, depending on their weight loss and hunger. Remember, this is not a race. It's a lifelong way of eating.

Often it can be helpful to know the exact calorie breakdown for each plan, so check out the box below that presents the math for each of the five plans. This can help when certain foods are not available or practical. For example, say you are in a situation where you can't cook a 90/10 meal from scratch and your only alternative is a frozen entrée from the supermarket. This is perfectly okay, provided that the substituted meal falls within the correct caloric range. So long as you stay within these caloric guidelines, you may alter a few 90/10 meals to fit your personal tastes. Of course try to keep these substitutions to a minimum. I designed these menus to provide well-balanced nutrition, and to replace nutritious meals with less-than-healthy alternatives is counterproductive.
