From Booklist
Social anxiety disorder goes well beyond simple shyness and can be emotionally crippling to its sufferers. Its victims find even the most informal and routine social situations threatening, and more formal events such as speeches and parties can trigger severe bouts of debilitating anxiety. Some 17 million Americans suffer from social anxiety disorder, and for every one that is diagnosed and receives help, there are probably a half dozen more who suffer in silence. This book is an excellent resource for those who suffer from this disorder, those who love them, and those who treat them. The authors start with the symptoms and some of the possible causes. Most important, they offer methods for treating the disorder, including self-treatment options. Case histories present people from a wide variety of backgrounds who have social anxiety disorder. Appendixes include help from parents of children with this disorder and other resources. An important book that addresses a topic that has received too little coverage. Marlene Chamberlain

Good primer for application of CBT to social anxiety
By Dr. Signe A. Dayhoff
"Painfully Shy" succinctly covers all the basics of dealing with chronic shyness and social anxiety and does so with compassion and understanding in a reader-friendly style. Through ongoing case histories it demonstrates assessment and treatment possibilities. Furthermore, it has appendices containing useful resources for both adults and children. It might have been useful, however, for the book to have provided readers with in-depth applications of these techniques and principles in specific social areas that shy and socially anxious people often report as important. These include meeting people, dating, making an impression, giving reports, using the telephone, handling meetings, surviving job interviews, and "coming out" about their condition. Research has shown that frequently sufferers also need social-effectiveness skills training in order to recovery more quickly and satisfactorily. Overall, readers will find this book well-done, interesting to read, with useful information and helpful strategies.

Disappointed
By Sophie
This is the first and only book I've bought concerning social phobia. Perhaps because I had already researched this subject on the web, a lot of the suggestions in this book were common sense and obvious. Too much was devoted to explication (e.g., what causes anxiety, nature vs. nature, what are SSRIs, etc.) vs. providing actual suggestions which I thought was a waste.

Was I expecting too much? I don't know. There weren't any revelations in this book. Even the anecdotes were a disappointment, I wished the author fleshed them out more. This book may be useful for those comletely NEW to this topic, but I suggest you look elsewhere if you want to delve deeper.

Good for understanding problem of Social Anxiety, poor for recovery from it
By Ryan
This book was the first I purchased to better understand my issue of social anxiety and how to overcome it. It is fairly well written and gave me a better understanding of my social anxiety; however, I now know that it lacked crucial information. It fails to even mention cognitive behavioral therapy, which is considered the main treatment method for this disorder. In retrospect, the book did very little for me. It contained information that can mostly be found online. The author did not consult the opinions of other professionals to try to give the reader the best coping strategies available. Instead, she mostly derives her information from her own experience and education. This has the effect of giving the reader a limited and lopsided understanding of this disorder. In addition to Cognitive behavioral therapy, she leaves out muscle relaxation and breathing techniques that are both well known to be good defenses against the physical symptoms of social anxiety disorder. If you are looking for a comprehensive book on social anxiety that includes a recovery plan, I strongly recommend "Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe" by Signe A. Dayhoff. This book is excellent and has helped me very much to overcome the grip that this disorder has had on my life. Good luck to you.

Graham- an excellent view to F1 motor sport from a great driver.
By Kim P. Griswold
This book is in excellent shape for a former library book. Graham Hill was a great writer and gives a good insight to the G.P. sport and his contribution to it. He was a major driver during a very interesting period of the sport.

An entertaining and funny insight into 1960's Formula 1.
By Mark
Ordinarily, my biggest problem with autobiographies is that they often descend into long, boring lists of their subjects career. But thankfully this definitely cannot be said of "Graham". It's a book that is written with a lot of humour, a tonne of anecdotes and only a loose chronological description of his career (sometimes entire seasons of F1 are skipped over in pursuit of more interesting stories!).

Graham's character comes through on every page and, considering this was published by in the mid 70's, it gives a great insight into a different world.

It's a short read (175 pages) and can be knocked off pretty easily in a few days. Also, I believe this book is long out-of-print which makes it a prized book in my F1 collection. And thanks to a good old-fashioned hard cover, the copy I purchased is still in great condition.

A must have if you're an F-1 fan.
By H M Mackow
I always thought of Graham as one of the great racers of the 60's/70's. I have another book about his career with a lot of great pictures and a good career summary. This book is quite different. Its Graham talking to you the whole way through until you get to the end. The last part is written by his wife after the plane crash and it was really touching to hear her perspective. If you are anywhere near a F-1 fan this is a book that must be read.

great resource for first-timers
By bvj54
This book provides a good basic set of data and student comments on most of the colleges we're considering. A good companion is "Students' Guide to Colleges," which covers only the top 100 colleges, but is brutally honest. This Insider's Guide tends to present a pretty positive view of each college, although it provides a little more insight than just looking at the college's own website or viewbook. The Insider's Guide has colleges grouped by state. I think Insider's Guide gives us useful information about each college: the physical campus, the dorms and food, the use of drugs and alcohol, the types of activities students typically enjoy (sports, arts, whatever).

Great reference to get an opinion on a number of different schools. As long as you keep in mind that it is only one point of view. My dautghter and her friends have used it substanially - it may at least help you narrow the field for potential visits or enrollments.

Excellent book would recommend it for those at the front end of their search!

Buy the 2006
By S. Weeks
I think it's disgusting the lack of research Yale Daily News put into this 2007 guide. There are a hundred things wrong with this guide, but just from opening to the school I go to (University of Delaware), and seeing that one of the things I have to do before I graduate is "go to the Stone Balloon," I could tell this book was just a new cover to the 2006 with updated admissions statistics. The Stone Balloon, a historic University of Delaware Bar and Music Hall, announced more than a year ago that it was going to be knocked down and replaced by condiminiums on Main Street. This was true, and it was closed for the spring, and camera crews were there at the beginning of the summer to see huge bulldozers knock it over. Pretty sad that NO ONE will be able to fulfill the Insider's Guide's instructions. Sweet life Yale...do some research and stop making money reprinting the same "best-selling" book each year

Discerning film lover loves this book
By Lois West
This book is exactly what I needed to separate the good/excellent films from the bad and the ugly. I don't watch films (primarily those on TV) without consulting it. It has enabled me to find popular as well as little-known films that are well-made, well-acted, and well-directed. It has saved me hours of watching films that I wish I'd never seen and reading film guides that include most of the films ever made.

Quality guide for quality films

Well organised, thorough guide to best-known movies. Great resource for classy-style film programmers, not strong on cult/weird/offbeat material. Well-written without pretension.

The night before a big meeting, Jack Eisley is sitting in an airport bar in Philadelphia, chatting up a pretty young blonde. Sure, Jack has a wife and daughter at home, but this is just a little harmless flirting. Harmless, that is, until the blonde leans forward and says, "I poisoned your drink."

She tells Jack that unless she can keep someone within ten feet of her at all times, she'll die. And if he wants the antidote, he'll have to take her back to his hotel room and promise to stay by her side.

Jack thinks: psycho. But as the violent night wears on, and he encounters a relentless government assassin, a threatening voice on a cell phone, a deadly waitress, dirty cops, and shady cab drivers . . .

He begins to believe her.

From Publishers Weekly
Swierczynski chronicles a long, frenzied and near-fatal night in Philadelphia in his fast-paced if far-fetched sophomore effort (after 2005's The Wheelman). The narrative cuts back and forth between journalist Jack Eisley, who's poisoned at a Philadelphia airport bar by the beautiful blonde of the title, Kelly White; and Mike Kowalski, a supersecret operative for a covert government agency, who must find a scientist who has gone into hiding—in order to kill him, and bring back his head—and take Kelly into custody as well. The common thread: a dangerous nanotechnology tracking device. Mike's handlers are interested, and Kelly is infected with the nanites that will automatically cause her to kill if she's left alone. Hence her decision to dose Jack and keep him shackled to her with the promise of an antidote. Rapid-fire pacing, hard-boiled dialogue and excellent local color make up for the unlikely twists and turns of this entertaining thriller. (Nov.)

From Booklist
Swierczynski's The Wheel Man (2005) was an adrenaline-charged thrill ride through the streets of Philadelphia, and this one is, too. But where Wheel Man offered an inventive take on a traditional crime scenario--the heist gone wrong--The Blonde serves up more high--concept fare. Jack Eisley, dreading a meeting with his wife's ball-busting divorce lawyer, meets an attractive blond who informs him that she just poisoned his drink. If he wants the antidote, she adds, he'd better stay close, because if she doesn't have someone within 10 feet of her at all times, she'll die. Unfortunately for Jack, she is not a psycho. She is infected with fast-replicating and highly infectious nanomachines--and followed by a government agent who already has one head in his duffel bag. Her predicament, which soon becomes Jack's--thanks to an injudicious kiss--requires entertaining, nonstop problem solving. If the premise sounds hard to swallow, it's worth taking the bait. This is another fast, funny, and action-packed outing from a writer who, fortunately for us, doesn't seem to know how to slow down. Keir Graff

Review
"Lean as a starving model, mean as a snake, and fast as a jet. This guy has got to be the hottest new thing in crime fiction, and THE BLONDE is one of the best crime reads I've had in some time."
--Joe R. Lansdale, Edgar-winning author of SUNSET AND SAWDUST "Duane Swierczynski's new novel, THE BLONDE, is as lean as a starving model, mean as a snake, and fast as a jet. It's also one hell of fine read. This guy has got to be the hottest new thing in crime fiction, and THE BLONDE is one of the best crime reads I've had in some time."  --Joe R. Lansdale, bestselling author of THE BOTTOMS "THE BLONDE is a shot of pure noir adrenaline for the 21st. Century. It left me battered, bruised, bleeding, dazed, confused, and downright goofy. And all I did was read it! Think how the poor characters must feel. Duane Swierczynski makes the Marquis de Sade look like a rank amateur when it comes to the business of torturing his characters and the readers who grow to care about them. He writes the way Sam Peckinpah used to direct: with a mad passion to awaken the slumbering masses and energize them with his enthusiasm for the material at hand. THE BLONDE rocks!"--Terrill Lee Lankford author of EARTHQUAKE WEATHER and BLONDE LIGHTNING
"Insanely inventive. This inspired high-concept thriller rockets from climax to climax with an intensity that will leave you breathless. It's like the movie 'Speed' -- only with brains."
--Charles Ardai, editor of the Hard Case Crime series
"I got whiplash from turning these pages so fast. The cleverest, wittiest and most relentless novel I've read in a long, long time. A dazzling piece of work." --Ed Gorman "A wild ride. Swierczynski knows how to make a book move and the pages fly--and he has a terrific ear for dialogue. The Blonde is wonderful, risky and very funny."

Warning: Do Not Open This Book...
By Gary Griffiths
...unless you've no plans for the rest of the day.

Trust me - this is about as good as modern pulp crime fiction gets - a frantic, dark, and cynical half day romp through a Philadelphia night that combines the lean, no nonsense tough guy style of the classic masters of crime with a neat pop science fiction twist. This is the bizarre offspring of Raymond Chandler, were he writing for the iPod generation, and Michael Crichton, without the tedious baggage of scientific supporting detail.

Jack Eisley is a Chicago newsman, traveling to Philly to meet his wife's divorce lawyer. Meeting beautiful blonde Kelly Whyte on the flight, Jack succumbs to a drink in the airport bar. And from the "I poisoned your drink" opening line to a satisfyingly twisted climax 226 pages later that will come too soon, this is a rock-`em, sock-`em, in-your-face thriller that will keep you as close to this book as Kelly, you'll learn, needs to keep Jack. Rising above the crowd in this solid cast is Mike Kowalski, an ultra-secret government operative and part time vigilante who, in his spare time, is assassinating the Philadelphia mob, goomba-by-goomba, to settle an old score. Kowalski is a memorable thug, an indestructible, larger than life lethal weapon of a man who'd be comfortable knocking around with Bennie and the biker in Sam Peckinpah's "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." And though Swiercynski is not one to allow plot complexities to slow down the not stop mayhem, the players and pieces do eventually come together in a conclusion that if macabre, is satisfying.

Duane Swierczynski is the real deal - a writer who clearly enjoys his craft and practices it with hip, clean prose that is meant to shock and entertain. I thoroughly enjoyed last year's "The Wheelman"; "The Blonde" obliterates any risk of sophomore jinx. Do yourself a favor - get to know Swierczynski and his rocking tales of Philadelphia noir.

A White-Hot Bullet Right Between The Eyes
By Mel Odom
Duane Swierczynski has, with the publication of THE BLONDE become one of the new next-gen crime writers I'm watching. He's an editor-in-chief of a major Philadelphia newspaper, so his lean, muscular prose come to him naturally from a daily grind. The imagination is purely his, but it's a new twist on a lot of the old noir-style books and movies that I love so much.

I never know what to expect from his characters. In The Blonde I wasn't even sure who the good guys were until the final pages of the book were sorted out. It was a great ride, and I couldn't stop turning pages once I'd started. I'd read the warnings on the book posted by other writers and reviews, but they really meant it.

His previous release from a mainstream publisher came in 2005. THE WHEELMAN was a blistering read that kept you glued to the story in a merciless grip. See, Swiercynski has this take-no-prisoners mentality that just grabs the reader by the throat on page one, introduces a problem the protagonist has to handle just to survive, then turns the tables on him (and the reader!) before another 15 or 20 pages have gone by.

Reading the twists and turns of his plots is like constantly getting surprised by an opposing boxer's hooks and jabs slipping right through your defenses. No matter how ready you think you are, you keep getting smashed and broken up, and get left wondering how it's all going to shake out.

THE BLONDE has one of the best opening sequences I've seen in a long time. A woman in the Philly airport tells Jack Eisley, the main character, that she's poisoned his drink and he's going to be dead in eight hours. He blows her off, thinking she's just weird. And the reader watches as Jack gives her the slip and walks away. Normally there would be something that would prevent him from doing that.

Not in Swierrcynski's world. He finds a reason to make the protagonist give in and go back to the airport hoping to find the woman, Kelly White. Jack's nausea and vomiting convinces him he has been poisoned, so he returns for the antidote. Only the woman fesses up to him and tells him she actually needs him because she's infested with nanobots that will kill her if she's left alone.

Okay, we've suddenly entered the Twilight Zone as our crime thriller goes into Michael Crichton overdrive.

Then we pick up the next main character. His name is Kowalski. He's an operative for a super-secret government organization. A close reader will remember him from THE WHEELMAN, and I thought it was great that Swierczynski rewards his fans like that. The author's building quite a little violent family out in Philly. But he's not afraid to kill them off, either.

Kowalski has been killing Mafia guys off the clock on his own time as revenge for the death of his girlfriend and their child. That plotline goes back to the previous novel, but it isn't necessary to have read it first. It does add to things, though.

Now Kowalski's been given a new assignment: Find a professor and bring back his head. Kowalski never even flinches at the prospect. It's all business to him. But his business goes south in a hurry as events go awry.

Swierczynski's characters are all interesting people, but I wouldn't want to meet any of them. None of them care for much outside their own skins. But, man, they are an absolute blast to read about.

THE BLOND is a white-hot bullet of a story that hits the reader right between the eyes. Taking place in less than nine hours, the story will leave you breathless with anxiety and brimming with anticipation of what's going to happen next. It's a race to the finish as Swierczynski wheels this high-octane, V-8 thriller for the checkered flag.

Sit Down, Strap In, and Shut Up.....
By Don In Fremont
You are gonna need sweat bands to read this book!

The Blonde swirls with violence, humor, politics and just plain craziness. Duane Swerve, uh, Swycz, oh hell, let's just call him Duane S., shall we? OK, so it's Swierczynski. I don't want to make him angry, after all, god knows he's capable of some serious revenge. Anyway, he has created an instant classic, a book that SCREAMS (literally and loudly) for Tarentino, Rodriguez, or even Frank Miller to adapt and film.

Swierczynski, at the book's outset, drops us square in the middle of a personal hell belonging to one Jack Eisley, a soon-to-be-divorced journalist from Chicago. You see, poor Jack, who also appears in Swierczynski's previous novel, The Wheelman, had the misfortune to be targeted by a particularly industrious blonde, currently named Kelly White, and she informs him, out of the blue, 1) she's poisoned his drink with a "luminous toxin"; 2) he has but hours to live; 3) he must accompany her for the foreseeable future in order to receive the antidote. If this reminds you of a certain classic noir film...good...you are in the right place.

Because then, Kelly takes Jack on a little tour of his hell, complete with nightmarish blood-borne surveillance devices and scenarios best described as Jim Thompson with a shot of Phil Dick.

If that's not enough (and believe me when I say it isn't), Swierczynski is also developing another narrative, that of Mike Kowalski, sniper/assassin/comedian of unknown affiliation. He might work for Homeland Security, or any other nameless and scary group of law-takers. Doesn't really matter, because, with all his demons, he is immensely likeable. Part of Swierczynski's genius is that he has made Kowalski the hero of the book. Somehow. And if you think this is all just crazy-mad style, get over yourself. He's crafted a serious story around all the outsized action, with an ending as satisfying as they come.

OK, so we have hot girls, self-replicating killer-spy nanomachines, journo-suckers, affable hit-men, double-secret government cadres; are we forgetting anything? OH YEAH, a severed head in a duffle bag!!

Whew!

So whip out the card, mortgage the farm, do what you gotta to, just GET THE BLONDE!! It overflows with noir-y goodness.....

Great read, but hard to replicate

Don't expect to know how to write those essays after reading the book. They only show you great essays, not going to teach you how to write one and not going to tell you what's great about each essay.

Amazing
By Halcykon
This is a fantastic book. As a first-generation student, I had no clue what to expect from a college essay; I had no idea what made an essay good and what made it bad.
Although this book doesn't directly teach you what a good essay is, the amazing essays in here allow you to 'absorb' the good writing and use it to your advantage.

Vernon (poster before me) is correct here; you still need the grades, the scores, the extracurriculars.. or else the book does not help much.
However, if you KNOW you have a strong profile but do not know what to expect from a college essay (like me), then this book is right for you!

I can't thank this book enough. I learned good writing only paying $14 instead of something astronomical for those editing services.

Ironically, with the help of this book, I got accepted into Harvard's rival school :)

The essays are very interesting to read even if you're not applying for college!
By Venus A. Rachal
I bought this book because I tutor English off and on and I was thinking of expanding my tutoring to help high school students write their college essays. I saw this on sale at my local Borders and I thought, well why not? It would give me some samples to show students and help me to focus on certain essentials that make a good essay.

As I started reading the essays, I was so surprised at the depth and creative writing skills of these students. When I went to undergrad, the essay that I wrote was very standard. I talked about my goals and dreams and what kind of student I was, but I didn't turn it into a story (even though I am a writer and stories have been a crucial form of communication for me for years). At the time, I didn't know that it could be done. While I did get into all of the schools to which I applied, I wish I had known that creativity was encouraged in admissions essays.

Since then, I have seen fabulous winning essays to top schools (such as the ones included in this book) and I realize that focusing on a key event of your life and letting it tell a deeper story is part of what connects the admissions counselors to you as a person and reveals depth of character.

This book has really great essays. Some of the commentaries following the essays are better than others. I think, unfortunately, because the reviewers are professional writers, they are more critical than the actual admissions counselors might be because they want you to submit "A" quality work. I think telling your story from the heart is more important than tiny details that only a literary editor would pay strong attention to. Organization is important as is a basic understanding of grammar, but you don't need to get so caught up in the technical aspects of writing this essay that you loose your natural voice.

Other than that, I think this book is a great resource for students (or parents helping their children) who want to go to a university or private college. It is organized efficiently so that you can see the different approaches that various students have chosen and, in general, the commentaries can assist you in pinpointing why a particular essay was so effective. I wish you the best of luck!

Conventional wisdom has it that women can't work in Hollywood unless they're in front of the camera. And while it's true that female studio heads and major directors are in short supply, it's equally clear that some of the heaviest hitters in Tinseltown are women. Mollie Gregory has interviewed over 100 of these pioneers, whose stories make up a chronicle of the last three decades of the entertainment industry.

No subject is off limits to these women who run the show: sexual harassment, the personal cost of success, the stranglehold the "boy's club" can have on major projects.

Featured are frank, revealing conversations with, among others: Julia Phillips, producer of The Sting and Taxi Driver; Gale Anne Hurd, producer of Terminator and Aliens; Mimi Leder, director of The Peacemaker; Barbra Streisand, director and producer of Yentl; Laura Ziskin, producer of Spiderman.

Essential Reading of Important Hollywood History
By Syd Dithers
I was fortunate enough to have grown up in the 1970's and I've been able to recall nearly every project mentioned in this book, from the movies to the TV series and "movies of the week." To get a look behind the projects and see how they played a part in the history of women in Hollywood gave them a whole new meaning all these years later.

Told in an open, casual style (the book literally feels like conversations with everyone involved), WOMEN WHO RUN THE SHOW is fun look back at Hollywood as well as an important document of how the ladies "stormed" the gates of tinsel town.

This should be essential reading for every woman with an interest in show business--or anyone curious about the way Hollywood works.

A Great Read
By Gary Belkin
I am a geezer. I started in the "mailroom" of a theatrical agency almost 60 years ago and later spent more than 45 years as a television comedy writer in New York and Hollywood. One of the first things I noticed in the biz was that many secretaries (there were no Assistants then) were smarter and sharper than their bosses. And I knew why they weren't bosses: they were women, or as they were called then: "girls." For "Women Who Run the Show" Mollie Gregory interviewed over 100 "girls" and women who "overcame" and had successful careers as writers, producers, directors, stunt people, attorneys, etc., etc., etc. In this book they tell of "making it" despite perverse and pervasive gender bigotry.Brilliant comedy writer Treva Silverman (in 1974 she won an Emmy for Best Comedy Script for a script she wrote for the Mary Tyler Moore Show) recalls producers telling her agent "We feel uncomfortable around women" and "Don't even bother. No women." But the women in this book tell their stories without whining or male-bashing. In fact, they (including Silverman) enthusiastically mention the men who helped them along the way. Nothing dull about this book: It's full of fascinating TRUE short stories told by more than 100 interesting women who lived them.

Mollie Gregory Has Written a Winner
By Mary B.
"Women Who Run the Show" is an important book. Through her interviews with many of the top women in the film and television industry, Mollie Gregory has brilliantly woven personal histories into a seamless narrative of an ugly, shameful side of Hollywood previously revealed only in conversations among women and some sympathetic, understanding men in the business. The book is filled with stories of courage, ambition, persistence, and just plain guts of women who struggled through the insults, discrimination, and obstacles to reach the top of their professions. This is a must read for any woman who has tried to fulfill her ambition and talent in any profession. It reminds us that although we now live in the 21st century, some humans still have a medieval mindset that considers women less than human. This book will make you proud to be a woman but also angry that primitive prejudices still influence modern attitudes and behavior. This book gives one reason to hope that with women running some of the shows, change is possible. After all, movies are the most powerful of all the media, engaging all the senses, moving one to laughter, tears, and, hopefully, to enlightenment. Women's perspectives can make a profound difference. The women whose stories are told in this book already have.

The Chess Artist: Genius, Obsession, and the World's Oldest Game, by J. C. Hallman

In the tiny Russian province of Kalmykia, obsession with chess has reached new heights. Its leader, a charismatic and eccentric millionaire/ex--car salesman named Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is a former chess prodigy and the most recent president of FIDE, the world's controlling chess body. Despite credible allegations of his involvement in drug running, embezzlement, and murder, the impoverished Kalmykian people have rallied around their leader's obsession---chess is played on Kalmykian prime-time television and is compulsory in Kalmykian schools. In addition, Kalmyk women have been known to alter their traditional costumes of pillbox hats and satin gowns to include chessboard-patterned sashes.

The Chess Artist is both an intellectual journey and first-rate travel writing dedicated to the love of chess and all of its related oddities, writer and chess enthusiast J. C. Hallman explores the obsessive hold chess exerts on its followers by examining the history and evolution of the game and the people who dedicate their lives to it. Together with his friend Glenn Umstead, an African-American chessmaster who is arguably as chess obsessed as Ilyumzhinov, Hallman tours New York City's legendary chess district, crashes a Princeton Math Department game party, challenges a convicted murderer to a chess match in prison, and travels to Kalmykia, where they are confronted with members of the Russian intelligence service, beautiful translators who may be spies, seven-year-old chess prodigies, and the sad blight of a land struggling toward capitalism.

In the tradition of The Professor and the Madman, Longitude, and The Orchid Thief, Hallman transforms an obsessive quest for obscure things into a compulsively readable and entertaining weaving of travelogue, journalism, and chess history.

From Publishers Weekly
During a postcollege stint as a blackjack dealer in Atlantic City, freelance writer Hallman discovered the chess community that thrives in dealer lounges. There he met 39-year-old chess master Glenn Umstead, who performed exhibitions while blindfolded and had "hoped to become the world's first black grandmaster." The two became friends and embarked on an exploration of the chess subculture, a grand tour that took them from Princeton to prisons, from windowless rooms to the "giant electronic chess room" of the Internet Chess Club (ICC). At his first tournament, in Philadelphia, Hallman found "watered-down machismo and bent personalities." He visits the chess-obsessed characters of Manhattan's Washington Square Park: "In winter chess players could be found in the park dressed in huge down jackets, the only problem presented by the cold being the difficulty of moving pieces while so encumbered." He interviews Claude Bloodgood, a high-ranking chess player serving a life sentence for murdering his mother who once reputedly tried to use chess to escape from prison (he denies it). Much of the book is devoted to a fascinating visit to Kalmykia, an impoverished Russian province, whose president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, is "a not entirely unsympathetic supervillain with a kooky plan to dominate the chess world," evident in his 1998 construction of Chess City with its centerpiece, the Chess Palace, a five- story glass pavilion. Interweaving art and literary references along with the game's 1,200-year history, Hallman summarizes the many meanings and metaphors of chess in the final chapter: "Chess had come to represent intimacy, economics, politics, theories bleeding from rhetoric to outrageous science." Chess enthusiasts will enjoy this delightful tour.

From Booklist
This is a book that chess players should not be without. Not only is it a voyage through the subculture of chess; not only is it a portrait of two men, an American chess master and a Russian dictator, obsessed with the game; not only is it a history of the game whose origins stretch back nearly a millennium and a half; not only is it all that, it's also an exploration of the complex psychology and philosophy of chess. Traveling with his friend, a rather eccentric chess master (eccentricity and a unique kind of intelligence seem to be vital components of the successful chess player's mind), the author samples many aspects of the subculture: chess clubs, theme parties, even a match played against a prison inmate. But the most fascinating part of the book, the part that demonstrates just how powerful a hold chess can have over a person, is the author's trip to Kalmykia, a small province in Russia where the dictator is also a suspected murderer and a bona fide chess prodigy. In Kalmykia, chess is compulsory in school, and here the author finds "Chess City," a self-contained mini-metropolis dedicated to the game. Educational, fanciful, entertaining, this is a book that will make every reader see the game of chess in an entirely new--if slightly weird--light. David Pitt

Review

“This is a quirky, thoroughly enjoyable travelogue on the often surreal world of competitive chess---with stops at big-city tournaments, a chess-mad Asian satrapy, and a prison. J. C. Hallman does a nimble job of weaving chess folklore with his own observations about the different kinds of obsession over the game.” ―Andy Soltis, grandmaster, chess journalist and author of Karl Marx Plays Chess

“Hallman is a talented writer whose vivid prose and keen journalistic eye offer chess culture the compliment of intelligent impressionistic portraiture, full of powerful, haunting images of the 'demonic gods' of the chess Olympus and the chess underworld.” ―Cathy Forbes, chess journalist and author of Meet the Masters and The Polgar Sisters

“The whole history of chess is here, from the Crusades through the Internet, and its byzantine, mad, and fascinating story---rendered by J. C. Hallman with deft clarity and an unrelenting display of wit---culminates in a broken-down Russian republic where even warlords play the game. If Dostoevsky had written a book about chess being a form of religious fanaticism, The Chess Artist certainly would have been it.” ―Tom Grimes, author of City of God

“J. C. Hallman has written an important book about the place of chess in contemporary society. In elegant and accessible prose, he covers the history of chess, the Russian obsession with the game, and the competitive perils of professional players. This book should be read by anyone who has ever pushed a pawn forward. A crucial addition to the literature of chess.” ―Chris Offutt, author of No Heroes

Beautiful Storytelling
By A Customer
"The train was all lullaby, the gyroscopic jostle of the tracks, the steady click of the wheels like the eighth notes of some slower melody, the stars stationary out the small window, all of it a lull of travel nostalgia, a cradle or warm womb, Glenn and I like twins incubating in that cramped space."
The Chess Artist is its own lullaby, a beautifully told story with the game of chess playing the role of train, cradling author Hallman and cohort Glenn in its ample belly as it propels them from the break room of an Atlantic City casino to the surreal backdrop of the Kalmykian steppe, "its beauty Martian, the chalky dirt solid on the ground but rising as dust as though evaporating".
I was captivated by the characters, sub-plots, and settings, with chess history weaving its way through the story like a consistent and traceable thread in a larger tapestry. Chess is a metaphor for obsession, but also for the complexity of human relationships and motivations. The friendship between Hallman and Glenn is its own civilized but at times antagonistic chess game, and it plays itself across the pages like chess pieces leaping across history and cultures.
Skillfully rendered (at times poetic, at times insightful and wry) The Chess Artist is a book for chess players and non-chess players alike!

Better for its digressions than its story
By J-Rock
I've recently started a chess club at the school where I teach and I picked this book up to get some stories and tales about how chess exists in the world. The prose is very readable and there were several great stories. I enjoyed the one where they crash a games party at Princeton University especially. I also liked the vignettes on the history of each of the pieces. Many chess players play the game, but it's nice to have some background on how the modern game arrived at where it is today. This book is also unique in that most chess histories tend to focus on the major charismatic figures of the game. Yeah, Fischer is mentioned a little bit the travelogue aspects place a greater emphasis on how chess is experienced in the present.
This book falters a little big in its big theme, a visit to the Republic of Kalmykia, which is organized around a dictator's desire to make chess the driving theme of his republic. This was an interesting idea but I feel the author didn't focus enough of my attention on this story. An even greater flaw was the emphasis on the official version of Kalmykia's chess story. He spent a lot of time walking around Kalymykia and waiting for the dictator to grant him an official interview, but far less interviewing the experience of the everyday Kalmykian. I learned a little bit about FIDE, the international chess organization that Kirstan [the dictator] heads, however.
There aren't that many readable chess books out on the market so this has the advantage of squatter's rights to me. I'd recommend "Searching for Bobby Fischer" before this and this book as a follow up to getting a flavor of some of how chess is experienced today.
3.5 stars.

Fear and Loathing in Kalmykia
By David Hood
This book is an interesting melange of chess history, personality, relationships and politics. Unfortunately the mix doesn't quite work out as well as you'd hope.
The main portion of the book is the trip the author takes to Russia, and then Kalmykia to investigate Kalmykian president/dictator and FIDE president/dictator Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. As in Heart of Darkness, things get more and more chaotic as they grow closer to their goal with the chess master falling apart from the stresses of being in an unfamiliar environment. The squalor of both Russia, and more so Kalmykia is well described and heart-breaking.
Really though nothing much comes of the trip despite the author's somewhat Don Quixotish quest to find something about a murdered Kalmykian journalist. The total surreality of Chess City just overwhelms everything else.
The interludes the author provides on the history and development of the game of chess are particularly well done.
The other portion of the book, modern chess in the USA is more about Hallman's relationship with both Glenn the chess master, and chess itself. Hallman becomes infatuated with chess, just as becoming infatuated with a girl but never really gets to know chess first-hand. Like admiring the girl from afar he gets his chess impressions through the characters found in the chess world particularly his friend Glenn.
Realizing he will never win the attentions of his new infatuation he becomes ambivalent, even hostile to both chess and Glenn, his attitude swings back and forth as he ponders the useful, or uselessness of chess while seeing what it has done to some people. This was quite interesting, his internalized love/hate relationship with both the game of chess and the chess world is familiar to many chess players.
The chess world is full of great characters and stories, and I think the book would have been stronger if he had followed Glenn throughout a few more tournaments rather than devoting so much to a fruitless quest ending in a very brief, but very scary, interview with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
The prose is quite readable, though at times a bit over the top. Hallman is even-handed, though not altogether sympathetic to his friend Glenn, and the world of chess and chess players.
On the whole, this work is very interesting, but very flawed. Like a chess game it was as interesting for what might have happened as for what was put down on paper. It is worth a look for the personal interrelationships on the dysfunctional Kalmykia road trip and the sequences about chess history as well as the US tournament scenes. Similar to Searching for Bobby Fischer the book is strongest when in the midst of the tension of a tournament and shows weakness when going overseas.
