Intimate Portrait of a Driven Genius
By Sara Brideson
Ever since I saw Gene Kelly co-starring with Judy Garland in "The Pirate", "Summer Stock", and "For Me and My Gal", I have always considered him to be my favorite of Garland's leading men. However, since my childhood introduction to Gene Kelly, I have come to see him as much more than Judy's co-star-- and this book tells me why. I had never known before that he directed "Singin' in the Rain" and "On the Town." Who knew that his talent off camera matched the talent on screen? Clive Hirschhorn's biography reveals a highly intelligent man who is quite different from what one would expect when one looks at the characters he portrays on screen. Gene was a highly private man who, although he had a large social circle, remained a bit apart from the crowd. Although tempermental and brutally demanding of perfection from himself and others, he could also be surprisingly gentle and funny. He had an interest in philosophy, politics, music, and literature. The knowledge he had in these areas certainly contributed to the artistry he put toward his choreography and direction. This book gives insight into Gene Kelly not through speculation or gossip but through interviews with his friends, co-workers, and, most importantly, the man himself. The book was written twenty years before Gene's death and thus is not a complete portrait of his life. However, this works to the book's advantage since the author was able to interview Gene himself. The book is funny, inspiring, and tragic all at once. It broke my heart to read of the downward spiral of Gene's career as the golden age of Hollywood died. But, Gene's optimism and resilience were impressive to read about. He is certainly an example for all, embodying all-American attributes including ingenuity, persistence, ambition, and challenging the accepted norm. The book reads like a page-turner, and, by the end, the reader feels that he/she was one of Gene's regular guests at the informal Saturday night parties for which he was so famous. I'd highly recommend this biography for Gene Kelly fans, fans of musicals, or simply fans of a good read!

Gene Kelly: The Lone Hoofer
By Elena
John Martin, a critic for The New York Times, said of Gene Kelly: "He is not only glib-footed, but he has a feeling for comment and content that give his dancing personal distinction and raise it several notches as a dancing art."
This is definitely a great reading, which ensambles many of the diverse facets of dancer, choreographer and movie-star Gene Kelly, a respectful but surprisingly objective (due to the inclusion of numerous interviews and behind-the scenes details) biography that displays alternatively lights and shadows over this pioneer dancer/director, a recount which is initiated in his childhood in a poor neighbourhood from Pittsburgh (As he said himself: 'Astaire represents the aristocracy when he dances - I represent the proletariat!'), then his fulminant breakthrough in "Pal Joey" and his early fame in Hollywood, his immensurable talents and his involvement with a talented troupe of artists, his marriages to Betsy Blair and Jeannie Coyne, his perfectionist tendencies, the disappointments that would affect his career in the decline of the musical genre, the HUAC confrontation during the blacklist, the joy and the disillusionment, the humanity of a star behind the Hollywood's façade. Highly recommended.

A great recollection of Gene Kelly's life
By rounddmann
A great recollection of Gene Kelly's life. I would agree with other reviewers that this the best bio of this multi-talented star. I was captivated by Hirschhorn's interviews with people who grew up with Kelly in Pittsburgh, hard to believe that they didn't know he was a dancer, he seemed to want to be recognized more as an athlete, not uncommon for young men. I was also surprised that he didn't leave Pittsburgh until he was nearly 30 years old, and it was his second trip to NY to give Broadway a shot. Very interesting that he could well have returned to Pittsburgh if Pal Joey didn't give him exposure and lead to the Hollywood contract, which is a great story in its own right, MGM wanted him, and Louis Mayer promised he would NOT be required to take a screen test. When he was told he WOULD have to take the screen test, Kelly got his "Irish" up and cursed Mayer. Kelly walked away from Mayer's offer. It was funny that Mayer's son in law, David Selznick, did sign Kelly thereafter and yes, he was loaned to MGM where he made his bones and the best musicals ever. I absolutely enjoyed this story of a blue collar kid working with his family to endure the depression and became an American Legend.

A great guide to frogs and toads for the young reader.
By Amazon Customer
This is a simple small book for young readers and those just becoming acquainted with my favorite amphibians, frogs and toads. It is a good size to fit in your pocket. It is not a regional guide though. It includes frogs and toads from around the world. This book would be great for the middle school student working on a frog project. The drawings are bright and beautiful, but I do wonder how realistic they are. Photos may have been more realistic but I enjoyed the colored drawings. This is a great addition to any animal lovers library.

too exotic!
By Paul A. Mccloud
Was looking for a book on the frogs and toads common to North America. This book seemed overly concerned with exotic and European species and only touched on a very few American species, leaving my questions totally unanswered. This book is soooo incomplete and I feel useless.

Good information in a concise package.
By Shoppermom
I bought this book for my 17-year-old dancer daughter on the recommendation of another dancer. As it arrived when my daughter was away, I took advantage of the chance to look at it fairly thoroughly. I was very impressed by the straight forward nutritional advice and the common sense tone of the whole book. Young dancers tend to do a lot of wacky things; this book gives hope of success by following a more thoughtful and reasoned approach. The personal stories told by various dancers are a method that I know young people respond to well. When my daughter left for her last dance program, this book went with her, unlike many that stayed behind in her bedroom.

Very helpful.
By stacied84
I have been dancing and teaching dance for years and have owned many books and dvds that instruct dancers on how to stay healthy. What set this book apart for me was that not only did it give tips to keep my body in shape, it also had entire sections on dealing with stress and the effect that stress has on your body. Perhaps my favorite feature in the book is the appendix. It gives information and worksheets for the dancer to fill out that range from injury terminology to what cooking supplies a dancer should have in their kitchen. I have read this book multiple times and always reference it when I have a question. I also recommend it to my students. This is a must have for anyone who is serious in dance.

Great for dancers and other athletes.
By A Reader
This book contains a lot of valuable advice that is applicable to other athletes such as ways to cope with stress, performance anxiety, and rehabilitation. It also includes dietary advice for dancers (but the information it contains about eating disorders and other food issues might also be of use for other athletes as well). I have read it a few times, and would like to pass it along to many other athletes I know.

I also think it would be a fantastic resource for younger dancers who are looking to go into a career, as well as those who are interested in things like becoming cheerleaders or sports dancers.

Man o' War: A Legend Like Lightning, by Dorothy Ours

His trainer said that managing him was like holding a tiger by the tail. His owner compared him to "chain lightning." His jockeys found their lives transformed by him, in triumphant and distressing ways. All of them became caught in a battle for honesty.
Born in 1917, Man o' War grew from a rebellious youngster into perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time. He set such astonishing speed records that The New York Times called him a "Speed Miracle." Often he won with so much energy in reserve that experts wondered how much faster he could have gone. Over the years, this and other mysteries would envelop the great Man o' War.
The truth remained problematic. Even as Man o' War---known as "Big Red"---came to power, attracting record crowds and rave publicity, the colorful sport of Thoroughbred racing struggled for integrity. His lone defeat, suffered a few weeks before gamblers fixed the 1919 World Series, spawned lasting rumors that he, too, had been the victim of a fix.
Tackling old beliefs with newly uncovered evidence, Man o' War: A Legend Like Lightning shows how human pressures collided with a natural phenomenon and brings new life to an American icon. The genuine courage of Man o' War, tribulations of his archrival, Sir Barton (America's first Triple Crown winner), and temptations of their Hall of Fame jockeys and trainers reveal a long-hidden tale of grace, disgrace, and elusive redemption.

From Publishers Weekly
Unfortunately for authors like Ours, who has worked at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, all horse racing books must now be judged in light of Laura Hillenbrand's outstanding Seabiscuit. And while Man o' War (born in 1917), voted by racing experts as the No. 1 American race horse of the 20th century, kept winning his races and breaking speed records, Ours's account of his career isn't even in the money. This is a far less sophisticated recounting than Hillenbrand's, lacking the broad social context, and since Man o' War was a winner from the get-go, Ours lacks a dramatic narrative arc. But she does have a command of horse-racing technique and history, and offers some interesting tidbits and anecdotes. Sometimes the book feels puffed: for a while it focuses more on another champion, Sir Barton, than on Man o' War; only much later does it become clear why-the two great horses finally meet in a match race, and at this point, the pace of the story picks up nicely for a dramatic finish.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Laura Hillenbrand, in her best-selling Seabiscuit (2001), set the bar awfully high for scholarly research in just about any genre, let alone what might be called racehorse biographies. Very much to her credit, Ours meets Hillenbrand's standard in her exhaustively researched account of the career and human connections of Man o' War, usually conceded to be the greatest racehorse who ever competed in America. Man o' War dominated racing in 1919 and 1920, winning 20 of 21 starts and setting speed records nearly every time he raced as a three-year-old. Such uninterrupted excellence, however, poses a problem for any biographer. Man o' War's saga lacks the drama of Seabiscuit's rise from obscurity and comeback from injury. Nor are the stories of Man o' War's human connections as compelling as those of Seabiscuit's, though the history of jockey Johnny Loftus is more than intriguing. Also of great interest is the remarkably detailed account of Man o' War's most famous race, a showdown with the older Sir Barton, America's first Triple Crown winner, at an unlikely bush track in Canada. Finally, Ours uncovers the true reasons for Man o' War's early retirement, which ended a career that seemed destined to dwarf the accomplishments of those who came before him and set an impossibly high standard for those who followed. Even without Seabiscuit's dramatic trappings, this is must reading for racing fans, and it will reward anyone with an interest in the history of American sport. Dennis Dodge

Review

“Written with an effortless command of history and language, Man o' War frees Thoroughbred racing's greatest icon from nearly a century of mythology and mystery. In its pages, Man o' War lives in all his complexity: emphatic, breathtaking, maddening, both a blessing and a curse to those who cultivated his superlative talent. Man o' War is a riveting work, researched meticulously and told brilliantly.” ―Laura Hillenbrand, New York Times bestselling author of Seabiscuit: An American Legend

“You take twenty-two chapters, mix in one spectacular Thoroughbred racehorse, and gently blend in just enough inscrutability, dishonesty, and plot---voilá! One must-read book that equals hours of unadulterated pleasure.” ―George M. Steinbrenner III

“The golden era of racing and its greatest star come to life in the vivid pages of Dorothy Ours's outstanding retrospective on Man o' War.” ―Joe Hirsch, Daily Racing Form

Seabiscuit's Grandad
By Audrey J. Lewis
While this book will be compared to Lauren Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit, probably to its detriment, it is exciting in its own way. Seabiscuit told a rags-to-riches story. Man O'War's story was a riches-to-riches tale and so lacks some of the suspense.

I am a geezer who, at age 7, actually saw Man O'War "in person" the year before he died so the book had special meaning for me. Even though I have read other books on Big Red, this one was wonderfully detailed with racing lore and life among the rich in that era.

I'm from Michigan and my parents took me, a horse-crazy girl, to Kentucky to visit the horse farms of the area which one could do back then. One could even drive through most of the pastures, stopping to open and close the gates on the way. You could walk through the barns and many grooms would lead out a prized and loved horse for you if you showed knowledge about and interest in horses. I still remember seeing Man O'War. He was in a four-stall stallion barn with three other horses- his sons War Admiral and War Relic and a stable pony. The other horses were shown to us first and then the groom stepped to THE stall and opened the door for those of us waiting in the barn aisle. The adults in front saw that I couldn't see and let me stand in front. There was Big Red with his head high in the air, giving us a disdainful glance. He knew why we were there and it really was all about HIM.

This book brought all those memories back and gave me new insights. Not as fine a book as Seabiscuit, but a good story of racing and sport in the 10s and 20s.

Wonderful!
By Terry Gordon
This is easily the best book on Man O' War and it has the kind of beautiful writing and period detail to entice even those who aren't really horse racing fans.

Red, as Man O' War was often called, comes to life in this book and the research Ours must have undertaken is impressive. There's a lot of great drama regarding the people who surrounded Red, including his jockey who was accused of throwing a race. Great stuff.

What a great book!
By Voracious Reader
I just finished reading this book and have been inspired to write my first Amazon review. I agree with one review above that things start slowly, with a seeming overload of extraneous information, but everything Ours describes up front turns out to be relevant as the story goes along. In fact, her exhaustive attention to detail really helps set the scene so when things take off, the reader can come along for the ride. Chapter 8 made me laugh out loud, and I was hooked for the rest of the book. Couldn't put it down past page 99! I just finished it and still feel a warm, happy, glow (plus I learned a TON about horse racing). Two thumbs up.

From Publishers Weekly
Ragen, an American writer who's lived in Israel for more than 30 years, blends tragedies of the past with headline news of today in her gripping, emotionally charged sixth novel. It's 2002, and the Margulies family—oncologist Jonathan; his pregnant, American-born wife, Elise; and their daughter, Ilana—are contentedly living in a Jerusalem settlement, until one day, on their way home, Jonathan and Ilana are kidnapped by Hamas. Elise's frantic call to her Bubbee Leah in Brooklyn reunites four women—now grandmas and great-grandmas—who, as girls, made the titular covenant: if they survived Auschwitz, they would become "one person, risking everything, giving everything, to help each other live in happiness all the days of our lives." Leah gathers up fellow New Yorker Esther, now a cosmetics millionaire; Paris nightclub owner Ariana; and Polish political activist Maria to help find the kidnap victims. It's a race against time, as the women wield their considerable influence and the Israeli army desperately tries to intercede with the kidnappers before the captives are killed. Ragen weaves in deeper, more serious undertones than the thriller plot suggests, touching on the stubborn pride and the serious purpose that keeps Israelis fighting (or, in some cases, not fighting) for their fragile country, "the land that God promised to the Jewish people in his Covenant to Abraham."

From Booklist
When Elise and Jon moved into their home in Maaleh Sara, Judea, they didn't realize that they would soon be considered "illegal occupiers" and that terrorists might be "laying in wait." Indeed, one day the unthinkable happens: Jon and the couple's young daughter, Ilana, are taken hostage at gunpoint and ransomed for an impossible political price. When Elise calls her grandmother Leah in America, she sets in motion a series of sprawling events that spring, at least in part, from an oath made at Auschwitz. Blending past and present, Ragen outlines some of the hugely complicated issues that exist in the Middle East today, and though her political sympathies seem clear early on, as events play out and more characters (perhaps too many) enter the mix, there are some welcome surprises. Innocents become political pawns, and politics becomes personal in this raw, poignant novel wrapped around a decades-old conflict. Stephanie Zvirin

Point of View Rather Than Opinion
By Jacqueline
The Covenant is a novel full of incendiary material. In the post 9/11 world, we have all had to take sides in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the Arab/Israeli conflict which is at the heart of this novel.

No matter which side you are on, living through the lives of the characters in The Covenant can open your eyes. Ragen doesn't try to convince, doesn't argue points, doesn't indulge in diatribes or polemics. She simply shows you what the entire situation looks like from several different points of view.

When I started to learn fiction writing in my early teens, I learned that a writer sets an imaginary camera on the main character's shoulder and lets the reader view the entire situation through that camera lens.

The reader knows only what the character knows, and thus can enter into that character's emotional life through the character's point of view.

The Covenant uses many points of view which dilutes and disturbs the emotional bonding with the characters, but also promotes objectivity about the total situation. This is an example of excellent craftsmanship at its shining best.

Ragen does character sketch essays for each of the main characters so marvelous that they sneak up on you and suddenly you're wrung out with overwhelming emotion.

The novel amasses an astounding breadth and depth of facts that shower down upon you as you read. All those facts are juxtaposed and arranged with the spare clarity of a Japanese Brush Painting.

You don't have to judge whether the facts are true or not. You are riding on the shoulder of a character for whom that fact is true, and you can learn something about what it feels like for that fact to be true.

Only a novel can deliver an emotional reality with such clarity.

I recommend this book for beginning writers to study in depth.

Against a Crimson Sky: A Novel, by James Conroyd Martin

The continuation of the sweeping story of young Countess Anna Maria, introduced in the epic PUSH NOT THE RIVER, as Poland picks up the pieces and joins forces with Napoleon in an attempt to bring down Russia. AGAINST A CRIMSON SKY tells the interrelated stories of four characters in the aftermath of the violent dissolution of Poland in 1794 and culminates in the doomed 1812 winter march into Russia. Countess Anna Maria Berezowska has finally married her true love, Jan Stelnicki, but life is anything but ideal. Not long into their union, Jan takes to the battlefield in the hopes of ensuring a sovereign Poland for his children. Meanwhile, his best friend on the front lines continues to pine for Anna's cousin, Zofia, but she has her sights set a little higher…on the emperor Napoleon.

AGAINST A CRIMSON SKY interweaves these tales of intrigue, love and betrayal as one proud nation and one strong family struggle for unity.

Martin (Push Not the River) continues his fictionalized account of the life of Polish countess Anna Maria Berezowska in this entertaining sequel that follows Anna through the chaotic years of the Napoleonic wars. These are trying times for her beloved Poland ("Europe's plaything"), but Anna finds happiness in her marriage to the handsome Count Jan Stelnicki and in her three children. But because the book takes place in early 19th-century Poland, tragedy continues to dog her (in the earlier novel, she was raped and forced into a loveless marriage), including the death of a son during Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign. Because of their prominence, the Stelnickis have a front-row seat to history: while her husband and sons fight for Poland's independence, Anna is part of the Warsaw social scene that wines and dines Napoleon after he liberates Poland from Russian rule. Martin provides a panoramic view of Europe during a time of enormous change and in all its sanguinary excesses. His characters could benefit from more depth and his narrative drama from more realism, but fans of historical romance will find much to enjoy in this sprawling epic. (Aug.)

"If you love reading, Poland, history, historical fiction...you will love this book!" --Polish Culture Newsletter

"With Napoleon Bonaparte's ill-fated campaign to conquer Russia as a backdrop, Against a Crimson Sky manages to turn the wily emperor's exploitation of Polish patriotism into a classic read that lovers of Push Not the River will devour. James Conroyd Martin brings back the characters that made his first novel so compelling, deftly weaving their daily lives into the panorama of war and turmoil that consumed Poland in the early nineteenth century.  He portrays a world of hardship and heart in marvelously rendered 'little pieces of happiness stolen from a tapestry of turmoil, war, and separation.'" --Leonard Kniffel, Editor-in-chief of American Libraries and author of A Polish Son in the Motherland: An American's Journey Home

"I was both enthralled and educated by this story of a changing family in a changing Poland. You don't have to have read Push Not the River to get the most from this sequel, but after finishing Against a Crimson Sky you'll want to--just as you'll be rooting for another book from James Conroyd Martin." --Suzanne Strempek Shea, author of Around Again

From the Inside Flap
A magnificent and sweeping epic, Against a Crimson Sky is an unforgettable tale of love, secrets, valor, and the enduring strength of the human spirit, set against the extraordinary backdrop of war-torn Poland at the cusp of the nineteenth century at the turn of the 18th century.

The year is 1794, and the beautiful and resilient Countess Anna Maria Berezowska has narrowly escaped death amidst the chaos caused by the violent dissolution of Poland at the hands of its neighborsenemies who feared its democratic Third of May Constitution.

When Anna returns to her family estate, she is reunited with her longtimelong lost love, the handsome and proud Lord Jan Stelnicki. The two young lovers are united in marriage even as their beloved Poland is ripped apart. As the couple struggles to raise a family in the face of an uncertain future, Anna’s capricious cousin, Zofia, returns with a surprise of her own. Although Zofia’s past schemes still resonate, Anna’s doubts turn to fear as Jan’s patriotism draws himJan is drawn to the battlefield by his patriotic fervor.

Offering new hope for a divided and conquered Poland, the infamous Napoleon Bonaparte comes calling, pleading for Polish money and soldiers to fight the very countries that have wiped Poland from the map. While many Poles place their fervent faith in Napoleon, believing he will return to them an independent Poland, others doubt his commitment, seeing only a vain and pompous man obsessed without for personal glory.  With the aid of new Polish legions—Anna’s friends and family among them—Napoleon battles his way across Europe in an effort that culminates in the doomed 1812 winter march into Russia.

Against this backdrop, and entwined with riveting historical characters such as Poland’s King Stanislaw Poniatowski, Russia’s Tsar Aleksandr, and the legendary Napoleon, the dramatic romance of Anna and Jan unfolds as they valiantly fight to hold on to a tenuous happiness, their country, and their very lives.  Vibrant, exhilarating, and brimming with fascinating historical detail, Against a Crimson Sky will touch the heart and inspire the soul.

Against a Crimson Sky, the saga continues...
By Sam
I compare James Conroyd Martin's writing to that of my other favorite author Nicholas Sparks. It has always surprised me to find men who are capable of " getting inside a women's head" to write a woman's story with tenderness and passion. These men have created stories that depict strong women struggling to survive in harsh, almost impossible situations. Martin's book is a historical romantic fiction depicting the life of Countess Anna Maria Berezowka , picking up her life in 1794 and her struggle to survive Poland's political unrest and Napoleon's march against Russia in 1812 promising freedom to her country, but at what cost? Anna also contends with her conniving cousin and Zofia's efforts to keep Anna away from her one true love, Lord Jan Stelnicki. I could not put these books down and ran to read every free moment I had to keep up with the story. I bought both books at one time and I am glad I did. Read Push Not The River first and enjoy the continuing saga, Against A Crimson Sky. I can't wait for his next novel.
Mr. Martin is a teacher and chairman of English Dept in Marian High School, a well known college prep high school in Chicago Heights, Illinois.

About the Author
In 1903, W.C. Privy published The Original Bathroom Companion, making him the foreflusher of bathroom reading as we know it. Composed of jokes, stories, sayings, facts, and other quick-read articles, the Companion made a big splash in the smallest room of the house. In his honor, Americans began calling the bathroom a "privy," while British fans adopted the term "W.C."

Thanks to a dissolute Privy descendant, Jack Mingo and Erin Barrett have obtained the rights to Privy's legacy and have created a modern new edition of the bathroom companion. Particularly well-suited for this task, Barrett and Mingo have written two dozen entertaining books including Just Curious, Jeeves, Doctors Killed George Washington, Dracula Was a Lawyer, Al Capone Was a Golfer, The Whole Pop Catalogue, and How the Cadillac Got Its Fins. Barrett and Mingo's column of fun facts can be read daily in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Even better than the first one!
By A Customer
For Christmas, I got this book and W. C. Privy's Bathroom Companion #1. The first book is great, but the authors really hit their stride with this one. Both books are full of great random facts, funny quotes, strange how-to features, and lots of stories behind the things you've always wondered about. They're also full of pictures, which is just one reason why this series is better than other similar ones.

That OTHER Erin Barrett says "Buy this book!"

After enjoying the first Bathroom Companion so much, I didn't expect to like the second one even more. I'm crazy about this series; it's better than any other out there.
W.C. Privy's, Erin Barrett's and Jack Mingo's Bathroom Companion--any edition--is a bathroom necessity.

Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine Sniper, by Jack Coughlin, Casey Kuhlman, Donald A. Davis

Jack Coughlin is the Marine Corps' top-ranked sniper, the man who personally brings America's military muscle to the enemy's front door. In twenty years of active service, he has accumulated one of the most impressive records in the Corps, ranging through many of the world's hot spots. During Operation Iraqi Freedom alone, he recorded at least thirty-six kills, thirteen of them in a single twenty-four-hour period.

In Shooter, Coughlin has written a highly personal story about his deadly craft, taking readers deep inside an invisible society that is off-limits to outsiders. This is not a heroic battlefield memoir, but the careful study of an exceptional man as he carries forward one of the deadliest legacies in the U.S. military.

Review

“[Jack Coughlin] is one of the best snipers in the Marine Corps, perhaps the very best.” ―Peter Maas, war correspondent and bestselling author of Love Thy Neighbor

“Coughlin is less concerned with his tally than with the human values of comradeship and love.” ―The Washington Post

From the Back Cover

INTO THE CROSSHAIRS
Marine Sniper Sgt. Jack Coughlin carried his specially designed bolt action rifle―and its nearly magical scope―into a landscape of sandstorms, firefights, and chaos during Operation Iraqi Freedom. As marines charged through the desert and leapfrogged through bizarre, treacherous urban battlefields, Coughlin and his sniper teammate did their job and did it well: One by one, they spotted their targets―up to a half a mile away. And one by one their targets died. Coughlin has more than 60 confirmed kills.

INTO THE ACTION
In this extraordinary account from battlefield Iraq, Coughlin tells the story of his own unique war, from stealthy, slowly-unfolding long range kills to unplanned firefights―and how one sniper team adapted and thrived in a battle zone unlike any they faced before…

INTO THE HEART AND MIND OF A WARRIOR
With vivid portraits of Coughlin's fellow marines and the battles they fought from Al Kut to Baghdad center, SHOOTER takes readers to the frontlines of the war in Iraq and gives a brutally honest account of a man trained to hunt humans, who had the courage to do his deadly job―and live with it once the shooting stopped.

"One of the best snipers in the Marine Corps, perhaps the very best. When I asked one of his commanders about his skills, the commander smiled and said, "I'm just glad he's on our side.'"
―Peter Maas, war-correspondent and bestselling author of Love Thy Neighbor

Inside the Mind of a Sniper
By Junebug
We're all raised hearing things like, "Don't hit your brother," and "Be a good boy," etc. So how does one go from being taught to "be nice" to being a trained killer? Shooter takes you inside the mind of a sniper. The author is a trained professional, and takes his "art" (as he refers to it) very seriously. Because he and others like him are experts at their job, American lives are saved. He admits to being haunted by his former targets in his dreams and is open about the strain of being deployed had on his marriage. Recommended.

So much potential...wasted
By N. Berry
The book is a fairly quick read, if you can wade through the neverending pumped up ego of this guy. "A guy on my team got one kill there...I would have gotten 10..." Many more statements like that throughout.

Interesting review here from someone here claiming they were in the 3/4 and Coughlin was not involved in the hottest action in Iraq. You really get that sense in reading the book, despite his best efforts to convince us otherwise.

Overall, not a bad read, but I'm sure there are betters on the subject matter. Also, can someone please find an editor who actually reviews the draft before print? Spelling/grammar errors throughout.

disciplined killer a necessary good
By Mick B
How do we respond to those who would kill us? In this book Marine sniper Coughlin gives a great deal of answers....and shows the question cannot really be answered, just dealt with. We've really only been in one war that we started...the Revolutionary War. All others have been "responses" to threats.....and therein lies the trouble. Many Americans don't want to respond, or think we respond too much or too little. It is up to men like Coughlin to do our dirty work....just as cops must deal with drunks and molesters.

In this book I learned that the Marines are taught to kill....not to decide on what is a battlefield or what is not...once they're there...that's it. Coughlin must decide for himself, if the threat is a real one or not....and he does so with intelligence, training, and responsibiity. His personal reactions, and emotional battles with his "job" are a microcosm of the experience of all big countries....when and how does a civilized society kill its enemies, and who are they?

The book doesn't, and really cannot, answer these questons. What it does do, is give an insight into the dedication and integrity of the Marines through the experience of one man. It also gives a first person account of the Iraq war, which is lacking by the coverage of the highly filtered "news media" who refuse to respect men like Coughlin, and choose to see him rather as a pawn of a political game, which he clearly is not. The book helps us separate the man from the military operation....too often we are taught to trash vets like those from Vietnam who were not responsible for the decision making...only for doing their job with dedication and whatever honor they could retrieve from the situation.

This book tosses all of these issues out there....but leaves you with a respect for the military men who must deal with threats....and the discussion then turns again on what is a threat....we will always wrestle with these problems as a culture and as a nation, and must always hold in the highest esteem those who risk their lives to allow us the comfort and luxury to discuss these issues. In many Third World countries, there is no opportunity to discuss these issues....

A memoir of the author's life as a Crip-beginning at the tender age of ten in the mid-seventies-and his prison turnaround nearly twenty-five years later

From Publishers Weekly
After being physically and emotionally abused by his mother and her live-in boyfriend, Colton Simpson moved in with his grandmother. She took care of him and brought him to church, but Simpson still became Li'l Cee. This was his name among the Crips, and on the night he was initiated into the gang-the same day that he hit a home run in Little League-he shot two men at a gas station. He was ten years old. In this often enthralling and emotional memoir, Simpson takes readers inside his life with the gang, from the time he joined through his 16-month prison sentence and to his leaving the Crips. Some passages are quite graphic and can drag on a bit too long, and some of Simpson's turns of phrase can seem a bit awkward or overdramatic. ("The tumbling dominoes of my life events lose their velocity.") But the world Simpson evokes with Pearlman's help is fascinating, and his narrative is clearly heartfelt. For those readers willing to look, the book provides a window into an often misunderstood way of life.

From Booklist
The Crips, one of two notorious L.A. street gangs that have attained national prominence, is a famously difficult organization from which to retire alive. Colton "C-Loc" Simpson did, however, and now provides an insider's perspective on day-to-day life in the Crips, the gang's history (including quite a bit about its rival, the Bloods), and the plight of growing up in the 'hood while wanting a better life. To free himself from poverty and constant physical danger, Simpson made some changes. His former wife Gina once accused him of "acting White." He replied, "You think I'm some bourgeoisie Negro? My changes aren't negative and White. They're positive and pro-Black"--which reveals both changed attitude and just how wide the racial-cultural gulf has become. Though gritty, Simpson's story is by no means hopeless. "Life is something to live and do, not to verbalize," he says shortly before signing off with "In Struggle, Little Cee (Loc, no more)." This unvarnished portrayal of gang life is enlightening and even inspiring about a subject badly in need of illumination. Mike Tribby

From the Inside Flap

Colton (“C-Loc”) Simpson was a Crip. Beginning at the impossibly tender age of ten in the mid-1970s, Simpson’s world was defined in terms of war. By the time he quit—the first gang member allowed to do so—he’d risen through the ranks to become Stabilizer and later, General. Simpson was the son of Dick Simpson, a ballplayer for the California Angels, but even before he became a gangbanger, his childhood was tough. Raised by his grandmother at the edge of Los Angeles’s South Central, Simpson didn’t turn to the streets so much as become engulfed by them: without asking to be part of the gang, his induction into the Crips involved running down an alley while the members opened fire on him as he ran.

Simpson was an elite gang soldier, loyal to a fault, participating wholly in a system whose rules and unique ethics he quickly mastered. But Simpson’s run at the top of the Crips was cut off by betrayal, injury, and a prison stint that plunged him into an even fiercer war beyond gang violence: the war in Calapatria prison between the Crips and the corrections officers.

It’s impossible not to care about the youth Simpson was, or about Simpson’s fellow gangbanger Smiley, or about Gina, the long-suffering friend and mother of two sons who eventually married Simpson in prison. INSIDE THE CRIPS is an intimate detailed look at gang life in the 1970s-1990s, and at the same time a story of both buoyant camaraderie and devastating loss. It places the reader in the center of the rush that comes from participating in gang violence and puts the extraordinary life and times of one Crip into a larger context.

An insider's perspective
By Hot Sauce
As an ex gangmember myself, my "review" is really a "critique" and is from an entirely different perspective. First off, when I consider/read this type of information, my first objective is to consider the source. In this case that would be "Li'l Cee". And he is well respected within the gang ranks and one of the few who has the street and prison rep(reputation) along with the literary skills to write such a powerful piece. Second objective, is his story credible or is it just a good piece of fiction? Well, I've personally walked the line (did time) with Li'L Cee and know and/or witnessed alot of the incidents he spoke about as well as did time with the individuals he spoke on and everything was as he wrote. There was a couple of exceptions & that was some names were changed to protect the guilty. From this insider's perspective, this books gets 5 stars.

Good Book About A Terrible Lifestyle!
By Loyd Eskildson
Ice T sets the tone for "Inside the Crips," writing in the forward that "masculinity is at a premium in the 'hood; wealth is defined by violence, aggression, and strength. Gang wars are no stupider than other other war. Crips are even more powerful in penitentiaries - prison doesn't teach good citizenship. It teaches violence."

Carlton Simpson, author and central figure, is the son of a former professional baseball player (7 years with L.A. Dodgers). Carlton's father left home when he was four, and he was abused by his mother; Carlton nonetheless received love and strong guidance living with his grandmother. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough - he left after a Little League game to be "jumped into" the Crips, and then shoot two bloods - all at the age of ten.

Expelled from school for selling drugs, his grandmother tried sending him to two others, with no success. Carlton's education ended with the 8th grade. Numerous shootings and jewelry store robberies later he is caught, and sentenced to seven years in juvenile. Out in half the time at age 19, he continues his destructive behavior.

Gang warfare is greatly intensified within prison confines - one wonders how anyone makes it out in one piece. Guard abuse and brutality adds to the danger. Regardless, upon release Carlton returns to his modis operandi.

Six months after being released, Simpson is again arrested and sentenced to 24 years for robbery and attempted murder (shooting and seriously wounding a bystander who tried to stop him). At age 33 Simpson is again paroled, having supposedly gained insight on the pointlessness of ganbanging, while blaming White people for much/most of his problems. (Particularly disturbing is his wife's leaving him after he began reforming in prison - Carlton was sounding "too White.")

"Inside the Crips" ends with Carlton working for Ice T (an acquaintance during his early years). Unfortunately, that is not the end of the story, however, Carlton has again been arrested for participating in a jewelry robbery and is awaiting trial. This would be his third strike, if convicted, and the end of what could have been a useful life. (One uncle was a lawyer, another an LA policeman.)

I thought it was a good book
By J. Massie
Before I read this book, I came and read these reviews, and I wondered why are people talkin about monster's book, when this is about Colton's book. Now after I have read this book I see why, this book is very similar, just replace killing crips with killing bloods, I could have even sworn I remeber some passages that are the same,(EX. How the prisoners treated the busters in jail), and there are some people mentioned in both books, besides that, I thought it was an intresting book, it gives very detalied descripsions about what goes on in the life of a crip. A lot of people don't realize that growing up in gang neiborhoods, being in a gang isn't so much by choice, my father grew up in San deigo, he had been around some of the gang members, lil brothers and cousins. When he was old enough, he was asked to join the bloods, when he said he'd think about it, they chased him home, everyday until he decided that he would join. These books give a lil insite to their world and lets people see what's it really like, in these streets, and gives knowledge to the young ones hoping they would choose a different path. Although I thinks Mosters book is a better read, this book is also very good, if intresed, you should definetly read one of these books.
