A Cop's Life: True Stories from the Heart Behind the Badge, by Randy Sutton

After September 11, 2001 Las Vegas Police Sergeant Randy Sutton began soliciting writing from law enforcement officers-his goal being to bridge the gap between the police and those they serve, with a book that offers a broad and thoughtful look at the many facets of police life. Hundreds of active and former officers responded from all over the United States: men and women from big cities and small towns, some who had written professionally, but most for the first time. Sutton culled the selections into five categories: The Beat, Line of Duty, War Stories, Officer Down, and Ground Zero.

The result is True Blue, a collection of funny, charming, exciting, haunting stories about murder investigations, missing children, bungling burglars, car chases, lonely and desperate shut-ins, routine traffic stops, officers killed in the line of duty, and the life-changing events of September 11. Here, officers reveal their emotions-fear and pride, joy and disgust, shame and love-as they recount the defining moments of their careers. In these stories, the heart and soul behind the badge shines through in unexpected ways. True Blue will change the way we think about the deeply human realm of police service.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Veteran Las Vegas police sergeant Sutton, who edited the acclaimed True Blue, brilliantly evokes the tormented inner life of the average cop with 20 short but powerful autobiographical sketches. With a novelist's skill, Sutton makes fresh situations that could, in lesser hands, come across as hoary clichés. The broken lives Sutton encounters—the suicides, gangbangers, the mentally ill, the burnt-out officers tempted to eat their guns and the innocents in the wrong place at the wrong time—come vividly to life. The memorable figures include a boy who attempts to protect the grandmother who cares for him from violent punks, and a young girl whose trust in the cynical Sutton helps him gain perspective on his job. The author doesn't minimize the temptation to respond with force that is often the officer's instinctive response to mindless cruelty, and unflinchingly portrays the stresses that plague him when his best efforts to protect or save lives fell short— stresses that led him to consider ending his life. Some may find the closing section, a fictional Christmas parable, slightly sappy, but that doesn't diminish Sutton's achievement in enabling the reader to pound the pavement in his shoes. (July)

Review
"If you want to enter hearts and minds of the men and women sworn to protect us, read True Blue. These intimate episodes, written by the law officers who lived them, are funny, sad, moving and powerful. With proceeds going to those law enforcement families who lost a hero on 9/11, everybody should own this memorable book."
--Joseph Wambaugh, author of The Onion Field and Fire Lover

A COP'S LIFE...
is about a midnight call that brings you to a grandmother battered to death in her bed while three punks go running and laughing through the night....
A COP'S LIFE...
is about the man in the Ninja outfit who absorbs a full magazine of hollowpoint bullets and still raises his gun to kill you...
A COP'S LIFE...
is about the honor student, the pride and hope of his family, hanging from a speaker wire, or the baby who dies in your arms, or the people who think you're a hero--or the devil...
In this powerful collection of tales from the frontlines, Las Vegas police sergeant Randy Sutton goes beyond the neon into the dark corners of society, putting us into the driver's seat of his cruiser and a job that ricochets from moments of sheer terror to coffee-fueled boredom--with stops on the way at every conceivable act of human folly and depravity. With a poet's touch, and the unflinching realism of a crime scene photograph, A COP'S LIFE is the ultimate depiction of the hardest job there is.
"Brilliantly evokes the tormented inner life of the average cop."

A MUST READ
By Jacklyn
This book is many things - amazing, shocking, overwhelming and so much more. It was written with unflinching honesty and emotion and will give you an intimate view of the life of a police officer. We see them almost everyday of our lives and are often oblivious to the pain, emotional scars and demons they face on our behalf. This will open your eyes to their world and, hopefully, will help all who reads it appreciate them for all they do for us. They pay a very high price in their efforts to keep us safe.

The best book I've ever read on police life
By Copwriter
I bought the book on the recommendation of a friend, and didn't expect it to be much different from other cop memoirs, which are generally amusing, but formulaic. Randy's book was none of that. Having been a cop for fifteen years, I knew that Randy was writing what I felt, but he said it like no one else I've read. I finished the book on an airplane, while returning from a business trip. I was self-conscious, looking around me to see if anyone had noticed the tears running down my face. I can't remember any other book having that effect on me. If you want to know what being a cop feels like, you need to read this.

THIS COP CAN WRITE!
By Eric Cooper
I served as a Las Vegas cop for thirty years, and I can tell you, Sgt. Sutton got it right. This is a gritty book that episodically depicts the author's experiences as a rookie city cop in New Jersey and as a veteran officer in Las Vegas--one of America's toughest cities to police. He doesn't just take us on patrol with him, he takes us into the dark corners of his mind and tells us how his street experiences affect him. This is not a summer book for escapist reading at the beach; it is a dark look at a good cop's life on the street. If you have ever worn a badge, you'll recognize a lot of yourself in these stories. If you are a "civilian," you will get an in-depth look at the grim reality of police work and the emotional toll it can take on the men and women behind the badge.

The birth of a baby—"the one and only ever you"—causes jubilation throughout creation in this quietly celebratory picture book from newcomer Tillman. Polar bears dance, giraffes weave to the sound of brass horns, and "the moon smiled with such wonder/ that the stars peeked in to see you/ and the night wind whispered,/ 'Life will never be the same.' " Tillman successfully sidesteps the soft-focus sappiness that can accompany this genre. Her writing has the authenticity of whispered conversation; occasionally, she pauses in her exaltations of the baby to address the subject directly: "I think I'll count to three so you can wiggle your toes for me." Her strong, assured paintings truly set this book apart. The pictures subtly radiate golden glints of moonlight, and her almost sculptural rendering style gives her characters a hefty physicality that counterbalances the ethereal sentiments being expressed. Although one suspects that grown-ups will be most taken with the topic and treatment, this is one of those rare baby books that should make both skeptics and sentimentalists of all ages happy. Kindergarten-Grade 2—Rhyming text extols and celebrates the uniqueness of a newborn. "Because there had never been anyone like you…ever in the world." As the news of the birth travels, creatures around the world celebrate. "When the polar bears heard, they danced until dawn." "…the geese flew home." "Heaven blew every trumpet…." The text sits on white pages opposite large, richly colored illustrations. The moon appears in all of the paintings—as reassuring as the text's sentiment. Golden musical notes float across the sky as white polar bears dance and giraffes sway to the sounds of the moon's saxophone. The dark blue night skies make a beautiful and dramatic setting for this special night. The painterly art and poetic quality of the text make this an attractive book. Parents and grandparents are most likely to appreciate it, but they will undoubtedly want to share it with a child.—Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

From Booklist
Originally self-published, this debut from a new imprint celebrates the message that each child is a unique wonder: "Never before . . . has the world . . . known a you." Like Debra Frasier's On the Day You Were Born (1991), the text, directed straight to children, describes how the world, from the smallest ladybug to the sky's smiling moon, welcomes its latest arrival: "You." The computer-generated, collage artwork is sometimes blurry, and some of the compositions lack clear, dramatic shapes and figures that will pull a young audience. In addition, children may miss the symbolism in the images: musical notes meant to represent the sound of a child's name, for example. Still, children will enjoy finding the reassuring face of the moon on each page, and the rhyming, rhythmic text includes lines that beg for participation: "The sound of your name is a magical one. Let's say it out loud before we go on." Many parents will welcome this opportunity to tell their children how special and loved they are. Gillian Engberg

My Daughter in Heaven
By Sandee
I gave this book to my daughter Christmas of 2011. At the time, she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at age 30. I was led to this book because it said so many things about her birth and life I felt. I also felt I would not share another Christmas with her on this earth. This is the anniversary of her death. She died on Sept.8, 2012. I felt my heart stop beating the moment hers did. Before she died, she told me how much she loved this simple book, especially the part about my love finding her wherever she would go. I reminded her of that when I held her hand in the hospital as she took her last breath. This book speaks volumes to the love a mother has for her child.

This is such a sweet book. Both of my children have copies of this book on the bookshelves in their rooms (I don't usually buy doubles) we read it often. This is the perfect gift for a new baby!

Makes me cry every time!
By Sarah
When I was pregnant, this book kept popping up on my recommendations. I didn't know the book, so the next time we were in a bookstore, I read it and thought to myself "This is WAY too sappy - why is it so popular?" The answer: apparently hormones, because as soon as we got home from the hospital, I NEEDED this book, STAT. Dancing polar bears to celebrate my son's birth? YES, I NEED THAT! Of course the wind was whispering his name on the night of his birth - I just didn't hear it because I was a little busy. WHERE CAN I GET MORE OF THIS? Hence, my word of warning to other post-partumy moms: Buy this one, cry your eyes out, and then DON'T buy every other book by Nancy Tillman. I bought four and this is the only one that we still read at 11 months - the other three are going into the donation box because they truly are way too sappy in a "special snowflake" way that nauseates me. But this book...it hits the perfect balance that your child is celebrated and unique without going overboard. And the illustrations are lovely. To be fair, the illustrations of all four Nancy Tillman books we own are lovely, but we don't need to own four of them. This one is the keeper.

The Grave Tattoo, by Val McDermid

In a novel reminiscent of The Rule of Four, The Dante Club and The Historian, suspense master McDermid spins a psychological thriller in which a present-day murder has its roots in the eighteenth century and the mutiny on the H.M.S. Bounty. After torrential summer rains uncover a bizarrely tattooed body on a Lake District hillside, long discarded old wives' tales takes on a chilling new plausibility. For centuries, Lakelanders have whispered that Fletcher Christian staged the massacre on Pitcairn so that he could return home. And there, he told his story to an old friend and schoolmate, William Wordsworth, who turned it into a long narrative poem--a poem that remained hidden lest it expose Wordsworth to the gallows for harboring a fugitive. Wordsworth specialist Jane Gresham, herself a native of the Lake District, feels compelled to discover once and for all whether the manuscript ever existed--and whether it still exists today. But as she pursues each new lead, death follows hard on her heels. Suddenly Jane is at the heart of a 200-year-old mystery that still has the power to put lives on the line. Against the dramatic backdrop of England's Lake District a drama of life and death plays out, its ultimate prize a bounty worth millions.

From Publishers Weekly
An intriguing, 200-year-old mystery propels this multilayered stand-alone from British author McDermid set in England's Lake District. Scholar Jane Gresham pursues her theory that HMS Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian returned secretly from exile to his homeland in the late 18th century. A shriveled body found in a bog seems to bear resemblance to this dashing hero, right down to the South Sea tattoos that blacken his buttocks. Jane searches relentlessly for a lost manuscript by the poet Wordsworth that relates Christian's tale in tantalizing excerpts between chapters. Various subplots complicate her quest, including a fraught friendship with precocious 13-year-old Tenille, a lonely, mixed-race girl who also loves Romantic poetry. With a feminist, socially conscious spin, McDermid (The Distant Echo) vividly contrasts marginal subsistence in London's dismal Marshpool neighborhood with the Lake District's bucolic lifestyle. Boasting blurbs from such notable authors as Harlan Coben, Tess Gerritsen and Joseph Finder, this could be McDermid's break-out book. 100,000 printing; author tour. (Feb.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—During an English summer of record-breaking rains, a peat bog in the Lake District opens to reveal a 200-year-old body bearing South Pacific island tattoos. The area, home to Romantic poets, is where Jane Gresham, Wordsworth scholar, grew up, and she finds her interest piqued by the news. She has long believed that Fletcher Christian, HMS Bounty mutineer, didn't die on Pitcairn Island but returned to England. She has theorized that Christian recounted his adventures to his old schoolmate Wordsworth, who wrote them down, and those documents and a related poem, now worth millions, lay forgotten in a local home. In the race to retrieve the valuable manuscripts, Jane finds herself competing against sinister forces that would stop at nothing, including murder, to reach them first. The suspenseful story and its subplots, which include Jane's friendship with 13-year-old poetry-loving Tenille, who lives in Jane's London public housing project, create an absorbing thriller. McDermid establishes a strong sense of place in the atmospheric and pastoral Lake District that contrasts sharply with the sprawling housing project. Historical and literary references to Wordsworth's life and work and to the South Pacific adventures of the Bounty mutineers all help to make this novel come alive. Teens will enjoy the lively characters, brisk pace, and careful unraveling of the centuries-old mystery with its satisfactory conclusion.—Susanne Bardelson, Kitsap Regional Library, WA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Oxford graduate and erstwhile journalist Val McDermid, grand dame of the British psychological mystery (Peter Guttridge describes her as "Thomas Harris crossed with Agatha Christie") since the publication of Report for Murder two decades ago, has written a clever puzzle of a book that bridges history and mystery and demonstrates the author's range. The Grave Tattoo combines scenery, story, and spot-on characters into one of her most engaging efforts yet. The author's strength has always been her ability to evoke atmosphere, and the Lake District comes alive in all its unsettling beauty. Grave Tattoo is a solid entry for veterans—and a real treat for newcomers, who will enjoy discovering the four books in McDermid's Tony Hill series (start with The Mermaids Singing) and three previous stand-alone novels.

A bit of a departure
By Linda Pagliuco
Val McDermid is an excellent writer, one of my favorites in the gritty mystery genre, so I did not hesitate to pick up The Grave Tattoo. This new offering is also a kind of detective story, with some truly nasty goings-on but involves more painstaking scholastic research than typical sleuthing. It reminds me of the line in "DaVinci Code" where Robert's reaction to being chased is "I need a library", one of my favorite quotes. In Tattoo, McDermid deftly combines history, forensics, suspense, literature, and danger into another compelling, atmospheric murder mystery. Both male and female characters are skillfully drawn in 3 dimensions, and the plot with its tantalizing backstory inexorably draws the reader in and won't let go. Definitely not a cosy or a romance, Tattoo should appeal to readers who enjoy a bit of intellectual exercise embedded within their entertainment.

`Now it was her job to make him come alive all over again.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
A bizarrely tattooed body is discovered in the UK Lake District. There are persistent rumours that Fletcher Christian secretly returned from his exile to Pitcairn Island and was harboured by William Wordsworth, a childhood friend, who turned his tale into an epic poem. Because the manuscript has remained hidden, there is no conclusive proof of its existence. Can the body be that of Fletcher Christian? Is the manuscript still extant? Who holds the key to the past? Wordsworth Scholar Jane Gresham would love to find the manuscript, as would many others and not all are as scrupulous.

Peopled with interesting characters, the research through the past in combination with some fast action in the present provides the potential ingredients for a good mystery. This book involves a number of different subplots, some of which are more satisfying than others. Overall, the total package worked well for me, and I enjoyed the read.

search for the lost manuscript
By Robbie De Clercq
This is one of Val McDermid's best books. A great mix between history (Mutiny on the Bounty),poetry (William Wordsworth), mystery (multiple murders) and action.

Jane Gresham, a specialist in the works of William Wordworth, is intriguid when a 200-year old body is found. She is sure that this is the body of Fletcher Christian, the person who started the mutiny on the Bounty. Furthermore, she is convinced that the only reason why Fletcher returned to England was to meet William Wordsworth, a friend of his family, and to tell him the real story about the mutiny on the Bounty.

The search for the lost manuscript, which is worth a fortune, can begin.

Because this is not just a detective story, a lot of people who have never heard of Val McDermid, will probably also want to read this book. It has everything to become a bestseller. A must-read.

Great organization
By Tsktsk
For those who said this book doesn't have anything you couldn't find in your local library. Well, duh. This book doesn't have anything you couldn't find in the library, or faster yet, online. The entire point is the organization, having everything at hand in a concise manner. You'd have to do some searching and clicking to get all the information about one subject that this book stuffs into a few pages, and you wouldn't get them in concise, logical order without repetition. Obviously, this book doesn't go ultra in depth or cover every subject area. Even whole encyclopedia sets can't do that. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is it tells you what you need to know. If you want to be fairly knowledgeable in any given subject really quickly, its useful to not have to read a lot of books/internet sources and then figure out what part of the information you can/should retain.

Good reference but left me wanting more
By Twong
Though this heavy reference guide touches on nearly every topic imaginable, I find it extremely light on details. The information is well written and factual but offers only a cursory examination of subject matter. For example, I was really interested in learning more of the story of Abraham's willing sacrifice of his son Isaac from the book of Genesis in the Bible, but instead found a single sentence to encapsulate the entire story: "The second part of the book tells the stories of Abraham and Sarah, blessed by God and sent to find a new land, and the generations that follow: Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph in Egypt." No mention of God's test of Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac only to spare his life at the last moment because Abraham had proved his faith. Additionally, the book reads a lot like any other reference book - encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, etc. - so if you are seeking some 'personality' in the writing, you might want to look elsewhere. There are names, dates, numbers, some charts, and many lists. Nevertheless, to its credit, the book is thoroughly comprehensive in scope and I enjoy turning to a random page and learning something entirely new.

The Russian Hill Murders (Sarah Woolson Mysteries), by Shirley Tallman

Though her own San Francisco law firm barely tolerates her, gutsy young attorney Sarah Woolson flouts proper feminine behavior in this nineteenth-century answer to Legally Blonde. While her mother begs her to settle down, her chauvinistic boss tries to come up with ever more spiteful ways to pressure his only female associate into quitting. Naturally, Sarah digs in her heels and vows to retain her position at any cost. Besides, she has no intention of straying too far from the action.
When the wife of wealthy society entrepreneur Leonard Godfrey drops dead of an apparent heart attack at a charity dinner for the new Women and Children’s Hospital, Sarah’s curiosity gets the better of her. But no one will believe in her theory that Caroline Godfrey’s death was not natural---until several more people affiliated with the hospital die of inexplicable causes.
Meanwhile, when a pregnant widow whose husband has died in a sweatshop fire asks for Sarah’s help in finding the owner so that she can sue for recompense, our feisty heroine insists on taking the case against her boss’s orders. With the help of her colleague Robert Campbell and an eager young hansom cabdriver named Eddie, Sarah goes on a manhunt for Killy Doyle, the menacing head of the factory underworld. But she can't ignore the mysterious deaths at the Women and Children’s Hospital---especially when the hospital’s Chinese chef is arrested for the murders and the Chinese community’s most powerful Tong Lord asks her to defend him.
Faced with her first criminal trial, Sarah stops at nothing to determine the killer’s identity. But in trying to exonerate her client, she places her own life in danger. Will Sarah figure out who the murderer is, or will she be the final victim?

From Publishers Weekly
In Tallman's top-drawer second mystery set in late 19th-century San Francisco (after 2004's The Nob Hill Murders), attorney Sarah Woolson takes on a couple of cases that draw a torrent of protests from her law firm: the widow of a man killed in a multiple-fatality fire in a sweatshop seeks her help, as does a Chinese tong leader who asks her to defend a fellow countryman accused of murdering an accountant. In addition, a handsome, well-to-do bachelor wants her to handle his business negotiations. When all three clients' situations begin to intersect, Sarah realizes she has waded into dangerous, if not lethal, waters. Judge Woolson, Sarah's father, and Robert Campbell, her sole supporter among her law firm's associates, both lend their assistance, but neither is prepared when Sarah's investigations implicate members of San Francisco's high society in the crimes. Credible characters, cleverly subtle clues and a highly satisfying conclusion mark this intriguing tale as a superior example of its subgenre.

From Booklist
Attorney Sarah Woolson, daughter of a judge in San Francisco in the 1880s, is determined to practice her profession despite the contempt of the firm that reluctantly hired her. Her first-person voice is engaging if melodramatic as she relates her hostess' succumbing to poison at a dinner party and the subsequent deaths, also by poisoning, of several others connected to a charity hospital. When the irascible Chinese cook at the hospital is accused, Sarah becomes his defense attorney. Her various family members and an associate (two brothers, a doctor and a reporter, and the one lawyer at her firm who supports her) along with sundry other admirers are rich in interest if not depth of characterization. Still, Woolson's role as a protofeminist in the nineteenth century is a sympathetic one, and readers will empathize strongly with the obstacles she faces and the triumphs she achieves. Another strong mytery by Shirley Tallman
By doc peterson
In _The Russian Hill Murderss_, Tallman's Sarah Woolson has several cases to solve: who is responsible for the accidntal death of Lily Mankin's husband? who is responsible for four (seemingly unrelated) murders, and how will the intrepid Ms. Woolson manage to free her client - a fiesty, wholly unpleasant and generally cantankerous Chinese cook - accused of two of the killings? While involved in such serious business, Ms. Woolson must also combat the social expectations (and limitations) placed on women in the mid- 19th century: a mother who wants to marry her off, a boss who wants her fired (the law is, after all, almost exclusively a male domain), and others underestimating her intelligence, pluck, courage and resolve.

While I truly enjoyed the story and the reappearance of characters introduced in Tallman's first novel, _Murder on Nob Hill_, I didn't think it was as good as her earlier work. The climatic unveiling of the REAL killer in a court-room seemed a bit melodramatic for me, and the way in which "loose ends" were tied up seemed a bit contrived and forced. But don't let this discourage you from reading _The Russian Hill Murders_. Tallman is a wonderful writer, and I look forward to seeing more of her work.

a splendidly absorbing read
By tregatt
Shirley Tallman delivers a splendidly intriguing and suspenseful follow-up to "The Nob Hill Murders" in this second Sarah Woolson mystery novel, "The Russian Hill Murders." Definitely, this is a series to look out for!

When first a member of the new Women's and Children's Hospital, and then someone else who vehemently opposed the hospital's existence suddenly die, Sarah Woolson, San Francisco's first female lawyer, is intrigued and perplexed. The authorities dismiss both deaths as accidental, but Sarah has a feeling that there is something more to both deaths. However, she's too busy trying to help a client collect damages for a wrongful death suit, as well as having to put up with the bad tempered crochets of her hostile employer. And then the hospital's accountant dies under highly suspicious circumstances. This time there is evidence that the man was poisoned. And because he had had a very acrimonious relationship with the hospital's hot tempered Chinese cook, the police immediately jump to the conclusion that the cook is guilty of poisoning the accountant. And when they find the poison in the kitchen, they immediately arrest the man for murder. Sarah cannot believe that the cook has been arrested on such a slender piece of evidence, and fears that racial prejudice may at the root of the cook's arrest. So that when Li Ying, San Francisco's most powerful Tong lord whom Sarah met in "The Nob Hill Murders" requests that she defend the cook during the criminal trial, Sarah readily agrees. And even though Sarah realises that she has to contend not only with the racial prejudice of the jury, but also with the sexist opinions of the court and the jury, she's determined to do the best for her client -- and in this instance it means that she will have to discover the identity of the real murderer herself before it's too late!

I enjoyed Shirley Tallman's "The Russian Hill Murders" so much that I had to finish it in one sitting. The plot unfolded at a brisk and continuous pace; and the manner in which the author bridged both of Sarah's cases, cleverly done. Also nicely done was how the author maintained the suspense and how she portrayed San Francisco, both its people and the town, of the late 1800s. But what really made this novel a stellar one is the author's vivid and credible characterisation of her heroine, Sarah Woolson, and how she fitted the mystery around Sarah's stalwart character: a woman who believes strongly in the equality of sexes as well as the races, and who is not afraid to fight for what she believes in or to right a wrong. And it is this strong sense of justice and fair play that made "The Russian Hill Murders" a wonderful and absorbing read, and made me root for Sarah right to the end.

exhilarating historical legal thriller
By A Customer
In the nineteenth century, attorney Sarah Woolson struggles with the sexist attitude of her employer Joseph Shepard of Shepard, Shepard, McNaughton and Hall; he believes women belong at home not in the workplace. Joseph assigns Sarah to menial tasks in hopes of driving her out of his firm. In the few months at the law firm, Sarah has become disillusioned but refuses to allow Neanderthal to drive her away.

Impoverish pregnant Lily Mankin "hires" Sarah to work her claim that her husband Jack and four other men died when the back exit of the workshop had been nailed shut so that he was unable escape an inferno. As Sarah seeks out Jack's former boss Paddy MacGuire and his cohort Killy Doyle, she is threatened to back off or else. Meanwhile Pierce Godfrey informs a choking Joseph that Allie, who he met at a charity gala in which his sister-in-law suddenly died, will handle his company's legal matters. Others involved with the fund raiser have also passed away mysteriously while Sarah also defends in the all male courtroom a Chinese cook accused of murder.

If Sarah's plate seems overwhelming to the reader, the above paragraphs hardly go into the depth of her activities. The story line provides a deep look into sexism and racism in historical America, but does both in the confines of an exhilarating legal thriller; for instance through a short inset of the Pierce-Joseph debate which is an incredible look at business attitudes in the nineteenth century. Readers will gain immense pleasure from THE RUSSIAN HILL MURDERS as the heroine struggles with a male chauvinistic network while working hard to provide the best service to her clients.

"Dr. Murad is a true visionary and an amazing risk taker. I am always intrigued by and very impressed with his developments in skin care. He leads, others follow."― Felicia Rogawska Milewicz, Beauty Director, Glamour

"Dr. Murad is the Deepak Chopra of skin care."― Los Angeles Magazine

"Once you know Dr. Howard Murad, you inevitably realize he has a much deeper understanding of complete health and how it is the synergy of the whole body that creates outer beauty. I deeply respect his research, his inclusive health philosophy and his commitment to staying on the horizon of skin-care treatments. For a long time I have hoped Dr. Murad would write a book. His insight, his practice, and his peaceful nature are too wonderful not to share with the world."― Cheryl Tiegs

"Dr. Howard Murad has literally changed the face of professional skin care. His integration of science-based concepts with the reorganization of holistic care of the skin is a true innovation. Dr. Murad's philosophy of ‘not treating skin problems, but treating people with skin problems' supports his belief that ‘skin care is health care.'― Mark Lees, Ph.D., Chairperson of the Board, The Esthetics Manufacturers and Distributors Alliance of the American Beauty Association

About the Author

Howard Murad, M.D., is a pharmacist and board-certified dermatologist. He is an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California at Los Angeles and was named one of the top four dermatologists in the country by Vogue.

Dr. Murad pioneered many of the advances widely used in skin care and dermatology. In the late 1980s he founded the Murad Skin Research Laboratory and introduced the skin-care industry to over-the-counter alpha hydroxy acid products. At that time, he also opened one of the country's first medically supervised day spas. Since 1992, all Murad products have contained antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Dr. Murad's discoveries that specific supplement formulas could have dramatic effects on the skin led to the introduction of Internal Skincare® in 1996. Dr. Murad also continues to maintain a private practice in Los Angeles.

Hard to find all the recommended supplements
By Avid Reader
Book is good and Dr. Murad gives good advice, along with a strong rationale to back it up. However, unless you feel like shelling out $125 a month on supplements from the Murad brand, it is hard to find the supplements.

Buyer Beware!
By Maria J. Mctarnaghan
I bought Dr. Murad's vitamin pack, and followed his regime. After about 21 days, I started to become violently ill about 3 hours after taking the vitamins. Thinking I had the stomach flu, this went on for several days until I realized that the vitamins were actually toxic to my system. Not only was there extreme vomiting, diarrhea, but I became very itchy. Wherever I scratched, I would develop severe bruising! I think Dr. Murad should be very careful prescribing the same amount of vitamins for ALL women. Many factors should be taken into consideration, like weight, health history, etc. By the way, I was in excellent health prior to this regime, just had some cellulite that I wanted to get rid of. The good news is, that I should recover 100%, but there are some long term, permanent effects to vitamin toxicity that all buyers should be aware of.

Does NOT work !!! May be harmful...
By Concerned Citizen
The suggestions/solutions in this book do NOT work. I wasted over $250.00 on vitamins and followed the recommended regime for over 3 months (As opposed to the suggested 2 months... to give the program the benefit of the doubt after failing to observe any form of promised results). I am a 5'4, size zero female and I have cellulite in my thighs. After following the program outlined in this book I now have varicose/spider veins which I did NOT have before following the suggestions of this book! As part of the vitamin/supplement regime, this book instructs its user to take antioxidant, biotin and niacin pills. I read an article in Reader's Digest that said these supplements could actually be harmful! It appears the antioxidants may have contributed to giving me varicose veins. Do not make the same mistake I made... go to the gym and build up the muscle in your legs. That may help, but the program in this book certainly will not.

We Just Want to Live Here: A Palestinian Teenager, an Israli Teenager -- an Unlikely Friendship, by Amal Rifa'i, Odelia Ainbinder, Sylke T

Palestinian Amal Rifa'i and Israeli Odelia Ainbinder are two teenage girls who live in the same city, yet worlds apart. They met on a student exchange program to Switzerland. Weeks after they returned, the latest, violent Intifada broke out in the fall of 2000.

But two years later, Middle East correspondent Sylke Tempel encouraged Amal and Odelia to develop their friendship by facilitating an exchange of their deepest feelings through letters. In their letters, Amal and Odelia discuss the Intifada, their families, traditions, suicide bombers, and military service. They write frankly of their anger, frustrations, and fear, but also of their hopes and dreams for a brighter future.

Together, Amal and Odelia give us a renewed sense of hope for peace in the Middle East, in We Just Want To Live Here.

From Publishers Weekly
The two authors, now 18, met in Switzerland during an exchange program in 2000, and returned to a Jerusalem soon gripped by the second intifada. After falling out of touch, they exchanged the letters collected in this book from August to November of 2002, cycling through anguish, accusation, artifice, allowance, appreciation-all of the beginnings of real friendship. The book proves to be that rarest of contexts-a place for young women of the Middle East to discuss politics with openness and mutual respect. 6 maps.

Review
“Profoundly moving....The conflict between Jews and Arabs has been described in countless books and argued in unending polemics, but here, in the letters between these two eighteen-year-old women, an Arab and a Jew, is the heartbreaking essence of the quarrel.... In these letters (an idea brilliantly conceived and carried through by Sylke Tempel) Amal and Odelia educate each other..... This is the book for anyone who wants to feel and understand the emotions on both sides. It will become a classic.” ―Arthur Hertzberg, author of A Jew in America: My Life and a People's Struggle for Identity

Roundabout
By Muirnin
This book was required reading for my high school World History class. It was an appropriate read for high school, however I would not recommend it for anything else. The girls' letters give a wonderful and sympathetic insight to different ways of thinking in the Middle East. But their conversations tend to go in circles and they very, very often repeat themselves, as we all do when we feel confronted. Since the girls often confront each other, it is perfectly understandable; it is just rather tedious to read after a while. Overall, a good book, but I would not consider it an overly enlightening read.

We Just Want to Read Here
By A Customer
This is a compelling book written with the letters between two implausible friends, a Palestinian teenage girl, and an Israeli teenage girl. They write letters to one another throughout the book, discussing political, social, and everyday issues. Amal Rifa'i, the Palestinian girl, and Odelia Ainbinder, the Israeli girl, met through a student exchange trip to Switzerland in the summer of 2000. They discuss concerns such as how the conflict between their countries can be solved, and they strive to overcome their political biases and opinions. They attempt to learn about the other's culture and religion in order to understand it better. Amal and Odelia also have some very heated arguments about issues such as the misconceptions Amal has about Israelis, or the ignorance Odelia has about Islam.
The strengths and weaknesses of this book are very apparent. The development of the characters, while unorthodox, is very strong. Reading the actual character's writing makes it more appealing. However, it is a slow read. It takes a long time to understand their extreme points of view when you are an outsider looking in. A very commendable part of this book is the fact that it has very little bias. The bias that is apparent is only there because that is how the characters feel as they write their letters to one another. However, the bias is balanced; you get facts and opinions throughout each and every letter which makes it more fascinating and riveting to read. The reason the author put together this book is to bring awareness to outsiders about the Israeli - Palestinian conflict. It makes strangers to the situation become engulfed in it and wanting to know more. This universal concern will create willingness for peace and change in that country. Also, there is a definite reason that the author chose these two girls to have in her book. She wanted to show that not every Israeli is prejudiced against Palestinians and that not every Palestinian is prejudiced against Israelis. Both of these girls have liberal opinions and were open to learning more about the other's view. Surprisingly, this book has tremendous flow. One would think that a book written with letters would be choppy, however although it is a slow read, it has a good pace for the subject. I would recommend this book to anyone in middle school and older. It can appeal to adults because of the issues raised in the girls' discussions. However, teenagers may relate more to the characters. This book should be taught in school because it is one of the few books on this subject that does not have a bias. This book is great for learning about this issue, and I strongly recommend it.

We Just Want To Live Here
By Jonny boy
We Just Want To Live Here
In the book We Just Want To Live Here by Sylke Temple two eighteen year olds from different peoples who are at war talk about their feelings. One is an Israeli and the other is a Palestinian. Almost immediately this book caught my attention because it looked interesting and also realistic. It gave me an inside look at what some of the people who are living in the conflict and what they think about it.
The book is about an Israeli girl and a Palestinian girl. They met a few years ago on a trip to Switzerland that promoted Israeli and Palestinian friendships. A few years later they are both eighteen and have just started writing letters to each other. At first they don't tell much about each other, they just want to know about the other one. Slowly they approach the subject of government and then the army. But before that they figure out each other's views on the conflict. Odelia, the Israeli, feels that Israel might have stolen the Palestinian's land and she can sympathize with them. She also doesn't believe with the Israeli's draft plan for the army. She thinks that it's wrong and that this conflict cannot be solved with the force of the army. Amal, the Palestinian, thinks that the land was stolen and that the Palestinians have to fight for it because it's the only option that they have left because the Israeli's won't have any reasonable peace talks. You can see both of the letters written by people so it's easier to sympathize with both of them. Since you can see both of their main points, you can also see that both of their arguments are quite reasonable. As the book progresses they share more of their feelings with each other. You also can hear them talk about issues that are being discussed in Israel and Palestine today. It seems to me that if these girls were the heads of their countries and people, then there wouldn't even be a conflict between the two today.
This book was really good because it was very realistic and you could also see the letters that they were writing to each other. I could see their arguments and think that their points are very valid. This book would be great for either someone who is interested in the Middle East or for people that are in their early to late teens because that is the age of the girls that are in the book. It really taught me a lot about the problems of the Middle East and about the people who are going through them.

Clawing at the Limits of Cool: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and the Greatest Jazz Collaboration Ever, by Salim Washington, Farah Jasmine Gr

When the renowned trumpeter and bandleader Miles Davis chose the members of his quintet in 1955, he passed over well-known, respected saxophonists such as Sonny Rollins to pick out the young, still untested John Coltrane. What might have seemed like a minor decision at the time would instead set the course not just for each of their careers but for jazz itself.

Clawing at the Limits of Cool is the first book to focus on Davis and Coltrane’s musical interaction and its historical context, on the ways they influenced each other and the tremendous impact they’ve had on culture since then. It chronicles the drama of their collaboration, from their initial historic partnership to the interlude of their breakup, during which each man made tremendous progress toward his personal artistic goals. And it continues with the last leg of their journey together, a time when the Miles Davis group, featuring John Coltrane, forever changed the landscape of jazz.

Authors Farah Jasmine Griffin and Salim Washington examine the profound implications that the Davis/Coltrane collaboration would have for jazz and African American culture, drawing parallels to the changing standards of African American identity with their public personas and private difficulties. With vastly different personal and musical styles, the two men could not have been more different. One exemplified the tough, closemouthed cool of the fifties while the other made the transition during this time from unfocused junkie to a religious pilgrim who would inspire others to pursue spiritual enlightenment in the coming decade.

Their years together mark a watershed moment, and Clawing at the Limits of Cool draws on both cultural history and precise musical detail to illuminate the importance that their collaboration would have for jazz and American history as a whole.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, August 2008: Throw on the legendary LP, Kind of Blue, and the genius of Miles Davis and John Coltrane sings with the first note. Right away, both men establish their styles within the warm, confident tones of "So What," setting the stage for an album that has sold over 3 million copies to date. Clawing at the Limits of Cool explores this early symbiotic relationship and how two mavericks went on to rewrite the rules of jazz. Davis was the prodigy, born with a once-in-a-generation talent and a desire to expand the limits of his sound. Coltrane, on the other hand, was a late bloomer with a tenacious focus who saw nothing but the music. "Trane was just into playing," Davis once remarked. "If a woman was standing in front of him naked he wouldn't have seen her." Yet while Davis' bold trumpet and Coltrane's searching sax mixed in perfect harmony, their off-stage relationship was surprisingly flat. According to alto saxophonist Sonny Fortune, "Miles wasn't a talker and Trane wasn't a talker. So you got to guess there's no talking." Added drummer Rashied Ali: "Not with words, anyway." With deft examinations of time-honored performances and colorful anecdotes from bandmates, Farah Jasmine Griffin and Salim Washington provide an honest portrait of the enduring legacies of both "The Chief" and "Trane." --Dave Callanan

Review

“This marvelous book constitutes a much-needed paradigm shift in the story of jazz---a shift that skillfully fuses cultural and music criticism with a rich historical sensibility that highlights black genius as an artistic exploration and an existential adventure against the backdrop of our flawed democratic experiment called America. Griffin and Washington are preeminent critics of our time!”

---Cornel West, author of Race Matters

“Griffin and Washington explore the lives of two of the geniuses of twentieth-century music and follow them as their paths crossed to form what Amiri Baraka once called the ‘all-time classical hydrogen bomb and switchblade band.’ Though neither Miles Davis nor John Coltrane were wont to elaborate on their work in words, their lives and their music nonetheless still speak to us. This lucid and graceful book situates these two men in their times, listens closely to what they played, and the result is a social and musical history that is rich and always illuminating.”

---John Szwed, author of So What: The Life of Miles Davis

Why Do Some Authors When Writing About Jazz Artists Focus On Race Related Political Issues?

It's as though the authors would like to recreate the personalities and musical accomplishments of the musicians to reflect their own sociological and ideological theories and prejudices. There are multitudes of books available to those who want to read about black history and social issues. Of course, both Miles Davis and John Coltrane were Black. Miles achieved some success in the 1940's and early 1950's when playing with Charlie Parker and with his own Birth Of The Cool group. At the time, however, he was overshadowed by Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro and Clifford Brown. Davis then made some fine recordings with such artists as Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, J.J. Johnson, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson and Lucky Thompson. His career really launched when he joined together with Coltrane in the Famous Quintet with Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. Then was to come more success with Gil Evans collaborations. Coltrane recorded in the early 1950's with Dizzy Gillespie. But did not achieve widespread recognition until joining up with Miles in the mid 1950's. Coltrane contributions both as a leader and sideman began to come with great frequency. In 1956 he recorded with Paul Chambers, Curtis Fuller, Elmo Hope the album Tenor Madness with Sonny Rollins and Tenor Conclave with Hank Mobley, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. Mating Call with Tadd Dameron was also released that year. 1957 showed him recording with Monk and the famous Blue Trane album. 1958 brought release of the Soultrane set. He was considered to be an innovator by the mid to late 1950's and early 1960's.

My sense is that artists gradually evolve. Some characteristics that separate talent are based on their creativity, dedication, inherent ability, tone, technical facility, rhythm, concept, practice, perserverance and drive. To suggest that history and the civil rights movement are key issues that propelled their success is, I think, more than a bit of a stretch. It's almost as though artistic abilities are secondary and incidental to the message the authors wish to convey.

Here, for your evaluation, are some passages which I think evidence much of the tenor of the book:

pp3 Mile's manner seemed to say the coon show is officially over; we are here to play......Miles was raised to be a confident black genius..

pp4 According to Carl Grubbs, Coltrane's nephew by marriage....We are not trying to be like Pops (Louis Armstrong). Nobody wanted to be that guy sweating with the handkerchief.

pp6 (Coltrane) stands as a premier example of black creative genius..

pp7 According to the poet Michael Harper Coltrane's energy and passion was the kind of energy it takes to break oppressive conditions...and oppressive societal situations..

pp53 ..this sense of racial confidence and belief in black possibility would allow Davis and Trane to recognize the genius of the music they loved and would push them to pursue their art with complete dedication and passion.

pp 56 The music communicated the longings, postures, and desires for greater freedom of the emerging generations that had reached adulthood during the war years (WWII): freedom to explore one's political and aesthetic sensibilities without reprimand or violence..

pp58 For Miles, this quest for collective political freedom paralleled his own quest to liberate himself from the racism that sought to limit his ambitions as man and as an artist..

pp63 discussing the song Now's The Time..This song is an important recording for a number of reasons: First is its political connotation, suggesting the militancy and postwar expectations of black Americans. This twelve bar blues based tune was recorded in November 1945 for the Newark based Savoy label. It later became a R&B hit when recorded in 1949 by Paul Williams. To suggest that the title of this song was based on anything to do with the civil rights movement, black militancy, political connotations or postwar expectations in simply absurd.

pp104 discussion of "walking the bar" which was often done by rhythm and blues saxophonists...it was Uncle Tom-ish...demeaning..humiliating..Well, the audiences and players seemed to enjoy this and participated quite enthusiastically. I remember Big Jay McNeely would sometimes even lead the audience outside and around the block.

pp 113 this was a period of repressive anti-communist hysteria...The decolonization of counties in Africa and Asia brought inspiration to those engaged in domestic battles...

pp 114 According to Naima(Coltrane's first wife) He very much loved his people. I don't know if people know that, but he did. He very much loved black people, and he was concerned for us.

pp114 Davis and Coltrane were critically aware of the political enviornment they inhabited. And each would come to be representative of a more rebellious side of the supposedly conformist fifties. Serious, intelligent young black men: articulate, confident, refusing the antics of earlier entertainers and self consciously affirming the complexity and unique universality of black art forms...

pp126 discussing the song Airegin..Is Nigeria spelled backward, a nod to the anticolonial struggles sweeping across Africa and Asia. I might here call attention to what's happened in the aftermath of colonialization in such places as Rwanda,The Congo (Zaire), Zimbabwe, Guinea, Zambia, Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Uganda. Such things as genocide, disease, rape, plunder, corruption, joblessness, famine, torture, mutilation, assassinations, cannibalism, banditry, witchcraft, as well as other unspeakable physical cruelties and astoundingly unheard of inflation became the rule.

pp 189.. By the late 1960's, the old forms of civil disobedience were no longer satisfactory for a younger generation--a generation that came to possess a new sense of urgency and militancy..

pp 204 We learn that after Cannonball Adderly joined the group he became the "straw boss."

pp221 Coltrane's music would become the sound track for a growing political and spiritual consciousness that came to characterize some of the most radical sections of both black power and the anti-war struggles of the late sixties and early seventies.....along the way, both (Miles & Trane)had become international icons who would continue to inform our understanding of jazz music, black masculinity, and artistic genius.

pp 226 Coltrane's cachet as a cultural icon derives largely from the 1960's, an era where young people fashioned a new society .....where black urban youths grew impatient and began to develop a more militant movement..

pp 250 Ultimately, Coltrane speaks to the poets of black liberation..

pp 252 Trane led the way to the expressionism that gave life to the new black aesthetic..

Oh, by the way, on page 159, we are informed that Paul Quinichette was a hard bop tenor saxophonist, In fact, he was such a disciple of The President, Lester Young that he was frequently called "The Vice President." Neither Lester Young or Paul Quinichette were considered to be "hardboppers."

The author refer to Miles as "The Chief." While Charlie Parker was commonly called "Bird" I have never heard anyone refer to Miles as "The Chief" other than in this book. In fact, when I hear mention of "The Chief" I tend to think of former New York Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds who was referred to by that name.

Nowhere in the book did I notice mention of Max Roach's "sit in" at the famous Davis 1961 Carnegie Hall concert. Roach sat in to disrupt the performance because he felt the concert was a benefit sponsored by an organization supportive of the Apartheid regime in South Africa.

To me, the most enjoyable part of the book was the excellent discussion of the great classic Davis rhythm section of Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. More of such and less politics would have been much better!

Untrustworthy
By Steven Chall
I share the authors' enthusiasm for Miles and Coltrane, but this book seems 1) unreliable and 2) unnecessary.

1) Some things are just wrong, like Charlie Parker's age when he died. Not a big deal except it undermines one's sense of the validity of the scholarship (or the proofreading). There are lots of other things that might not be disproved in a court of law but don't hold up and strain one's faith in the text. Miles, they say, is "known to musicians simply as...'The Chief'..." Oh? Maybe so, but I've never heard anyone else call him that, and it cloys that they keep referring to him that way. Then they refer repeatedly to Bird's (and Bach's) "diatonic ear" in ways that make me think that they don't know what "diatonic" means, but that they just think it sounds cool.

2) There are lots of other authors that treat basically the same topics well, as biography, as social commentary, and as music, for example, Ian Carr, J.K. Chambers, Lewis Porter, Ashley Kahn, all cited in the notes. Or Miles and Coltrane themselves. Read them instead.

It's amusing that John Szwed, who in his back cover blurb refers to this book as "lucid and graceful," "rich and always illuminating," is himself quoted and cited repeatedly within the text; in their acknowledgments the authors refer to him as "our sage." It looks to me like there's more scratching (each others' backs) than clawing going on here.

Have you ever pressed the Scan Button on your radio? Read this book!
By Charles Pratt III
No doubt, you've traveled in a vehicle and pressed the SCAN Button on your radio. That's the experience you have by pressing SCAN on your radio and hearing the song being played as soon as the radio locks in on a particular radio station. You play some sort of rapid "Name That Tune" game in your mind and quickly decide whether the song on the radio is right for you. You undoubtedly make a snap judgement based on your personal musical preferences.

What does this have to do with the book Clawing at the Limits of Cool: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and the Greatest Jazz Collaboration Ever, you ask?

Here's one perspective:

I'm writing this review first of all because I really enjoyed this book! It was a great read. I'm a struggling Musician who treats such literary works like sponges - I want to squeeze every drop of knowledge out of it and appreciate it for all it's worth. Music is something I enjoy as a hobby and on rare occasions as a developing improviser so this book shared a series of stories from two Jazz Greats I admire - Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Maybe you do too.

Before I bought this book, I read the reviews. At the time of this writing, if you happened to select the other Amazon listing for this title, you would not have found any reviews. Since you're obviously reading this, you might have noticed several reviews, and if you drill down on the comments on some of them, a series of lively discussions about this book is fast approaching the 290-plus pages in Clawing at the Limits of Cool!(That's a lot of review & commentary to read if you care to! Not to mention, my two cents.)

So, back to the Scan Button analogy. Whenever your radio locks in on a particular radio station, you make quick decision about the music. You probably think or actually say things such as; "I hate Rap!", "I hate Country!", "I can stand Classical!", "What is this noise?!?!" (Yes, "hate" is a strong word, but let's be honest, we usually say that!)

We seem too quick to label music and people sometimes.

Yet, behind every style of music there's a story. If my judgement and "hatred" toward a particular style of music creates a roadblock to appreciating the underlying context of the Musician's point of view, I'm the one who loses. If the Musician has the skills to produce and record a song that hits the airwaves, yet I immediately dismiss it due to my personal tastes, my respect for people diminished since I refuse to let their story find a brain cell within me. If I don't take the time to get to know and understand where this Musician is coming from, (their unique perspective or point of view) I miss out in the end.

We treat Authors in the same manner.

Many reviews on this thread suggest that the Authors didn't do their homework. I disagree. At least one reviewer questioned the validity of Miles Davis being nicknamed "Chief". I guess Guitarist Mike Stern didn't do his homework either, or he just one day woke up and randomly penned a tune called Chief for his album Jigsaw?

What's more, Miles Davis studied art and loved to paint. As further evidence of the "Chief" moniker, here's a quote from Miles Davis as written by Writer/Columnist/Musician Mike Zwerin:

"The guy who looks after my house in California, Mike, he calls me Chief. I say 'Mike, how do you like this?' He says, 'I liked it, Chief...just before you finished it.' So he thinks I spoiled it by making too much. I have to learn to stop. I know how to stop with music, but you have this problem of balance with paint and it's different." (Read it in it's entirety at [...]
By the way, if you decide to read Clawing at the Limits of Cool, pay close attention to how the Authors unpack the differences between how John Coltrane and Miles Davis 'learn to stop'. Just know that this book is different.

So just understand that when you read Clawing at the Limits of Cool, it is as though your radio has locked in on the Black Radio Station. The song selection is Jazz, but the Deejays are Black(Authors Farah Jasmine Griffin and Salim Washington). This is not your typical public radio style and format. Expect an African-American vernacular, swagger, and some urban edge. Expect to hear things said in a way you might not hear on NPR. The differences between American Bandstand's Dick Clark's and Soul Train's Don Cornelius' television shows would present two totally different styles and target audiences, yet we can learn to appreciate both and expand our limited framework we tend to place on our musical choices and preferences.

This book is a raw, rough, and real account of two Jazz Powerhouses. When reading this book, you must remember the environment and times these famed Musicians came up in. On page 260, you'll find a glossary and the word "Chitlin Circuit". If you don't know what that term means, you'll have all the "facts" presented in this book, but still miss the point! I had relatives who lived through these times and even heard Coltrane within arm's reach. It was a wonderful time and I hung on every word as they shared this with me. To fully understand the times, you need to either have lived them or pay intensely close attention to someone who has. Not from afar, not from a casual visit, but from someone who lived, breathed, and was part of the fabric of that experience. This book is a close representation of folklore passed from one generation to the next. Those who choose to just hear instead of listen will miss the context.

Clawing at the Limits of Cool will take you back in time to a degree. You'll soon be able to wrap your brain around the experience from a perspective that might be counter to your upbringing or lifestyle. You'll get a peek behind the curtain, backstage when Musicians tend to cut-up, hang loose, and say stuff that they normally might not say in polite company! Let's not be naive here, we all say stuff we shouldn't say or write things others won't agree with. It's as though someone left the microphone on either on accident, but probably on purpose since this story needed to be told. And, the Authors told the story well!

Don't be afraid, embrace the perspective shared in this book.

So, whether you choose to take the time or make the time to read this book or not, just be prepared for a perspective that may or may not be familiar to you. It was very familiar to me, yet I know many people of various background who could instantly relate to what's being communicated in this book - regardless of their "station" in life!
