From Publishers Weekly
In bestseller Coonts's assured new international thriller, Tommy Carmellini, the sardonic, laid-back CIA agent who became a star in 2004's Liars & Thieves, gets a shot at the big time in his second featured outing when he's asked to drop his routine work and help find out why the director of French intelligence is making large, secret investments in the Bank of Palestine. Tommy wonders if he's the right man for the job; his own espionage experience in France is limited to being "assistant passport officer at the embassy." When his controller tells him that the new head of European Ops asked for Tommy by name, it turns out to be the unretired Jake Grafton (the longtime star of his own Coonts series), described by Carmellini as "the toughest son of a bitch wearing shoe leather." With support from Grafton; an enigmatic, seductive CIA agent, Sarah Houston; and a nifty little electronic weapon that Coonts says is really being tested, Tommy zeroes in on the high-level traitor who could do him—and the world—a lot of damage. Great Reading!
By George Miller
Stephen Coonts has produced another exciting novel. Tommy Carmellini and Jake Grafton team up in a novel of international intrigue to stop an Al Quada plot to assassinate world leaders at a conference in France.

So much is going on that its impossible to discover who the bad guys are. French Intelligence, the CIA, Israeli Intelligence all play a role as murders surround the search for an Al Quada informant.

Muslim extremists try to kill Tommy Carmellini while mystery surrounds multiple deaths him.

This is an exciting book and definitely one you won't put down. By all means, read this novel!

Another enjoyable read!
By BobT
If you enjoy Steven Coonts' writing, then this is surely right up your alley. I've just started on his Tommy Carmellini series, and I like the way he's developing this character. Typical of Coonts, there is more than one storyline going on, and you have to pay attention to the subtle clues he leaves so as to figure things out.

My So-Called Punk: Green Day, Fall Out Boy, The Distillers, Bad Religion---How Neo-Punk Stage-Dived into the Mainstream, by Matt Diehl

When it began, punk was an underground revolution that raged against the mainstream; now punk is the mainstream. Tracing the origins of Grammy-winning icons Green Day and the triumphant resurgence of neo-punk legends Bad Religion through MTV's embrace of pop-punk bands like Yellowcard, music journalist Matt Diehl explores the history of new punk, exposing how this once cult sound became a blockbuster commercial phenomenon. Diehl follows the history and controversy behind neo-punk―from the Offspring's move from a respected indie label to a major, to multi-platinum bands Good Charlotte and Simple Plan's unrepentant commercial success, through the survival of genre iconoclasts the Distillers and the rise of "emo" superstars like Fall Out Boy.
My So-Called Punk picks up where bestselling authors Legs McNeil and Jon Savage left off, conveying how punk went from the Sex Pistol's "Anarchy in the U.K." to anarchy in the O.C. via the Warped Tour. Defining the sound of today's punk, telling the stories behind the bands that have brought it to the masses and discussing the volatile tension between the culture's old and new factions, My So-Called Punk is the go-to book for a new generation of punk rock fans.

From Publishers Weekly
In this energetic survey of current trends in punk rock, journalist and music critic Diehl (Notorious C.O.P.) delivers a knowledgeable and sympathetic overview of the current "neo-punk" bands that achieved success with "the pop music mainstream in the mid-1990s," from big names such as the Offspring and Rancid to lesser-known artists such as Brody Dalle. He nails the key musical reason for the megapopularity of neo-punk band Green Day: while they "trafficked in three-chord minimalism, unlike many of their punk peers, they maintained a keen sense for imbuing those three chords with classic pop song structure and melody." But as a fan of punk music since its heyday in 1977, Diehl is also able to explain the various "vital subsets of the already subcultural punk experience." He keenly reports on how the age-old conflict between authenticity and commercial success has become a key issue in all parts of the neo-punk scene, from resolutely "indie" labels like Epitaph and Dischord to the popular Vans Warped Tour's "blending of the mainstream and the underground." Diehl convincingly argues that "[e]ven in its most crass, commercial state, Punk, Inc. offers more integrity and authenticity than anything comparable on the pure pop side." (Apr.)

From Booklist
Diehl limns the bands who nominally carry forward the colors of the Sex Pistols, Clash, and Ramones in highly readable fashion. Just as every rebellious generation rediscovers Rimbaud, so does every revolutionary pop-music genre eventually deliquesce into slushy mainstream commercial success. According to Diehl, just such success has altered what punk means and how it's expressed. A punker himself in the seventies, Diehl fondly recalls when Patti Smith "reinvented the androgynous cock-rock sex symbol epitomized by Mick Jagger and Jim Morrison in her own persona . . . that reeked of Rimbaud." Punk rock was never homogeneous--what did Sex Pistols and Talking Heads share?--and since it became profitable, he says, it's even harder to define. Diehl finds value and even remnants of proto-punk's DIY ethos in today's punk bands, be they modern-day thrashers or hypersensitive emo practitioners. An essential part of the story of an ongoing movement, Diehl's book provokes lots of interesting questions. So what if he doesn't have all the answers? Mike Tribby

This book seriously sucks.
By C. Holoyda
Matt Diehl writes an exhaustive book about punk rock. And by exhaustive, I mean it's boring as hell. How could a book about punk rock be so excruciatingly tedious and humorless? It's not particularly well-written, but that would be excusable if it at least was interesting. This exceedingly stupid quote from Missy Suicide is basically the thrust of the book: "But that's part of the fun of punk rock - that you can be so punk rock by not being punk rock." Profound. While I've spent a lot more time listening to bands featured in this book, "Please Kill Me" is a far more entertaining and worthwhile read.

Things I learned reading this book
By Steve Roby
1. Brody Dalle, who took her last name from Louis Dalle, director of Pretty Baby, is really cool.

2. If you only interviewed eight people for a book, go ahead and repeat what they say a few times. Only people who read the whole book will notice.

3. Brody Dalle. Wow. Great singer, totally hot, really important band. She's Australian, you know. Took her surname from Louis Dalle, the guy who directed Pretty Baby.

4. If you're into leftist politics as a neo-punk, that's cool. If you're a conservative Christian neo-punk but not a racist, that's cool. If you're not into politics, that's cool, too. It's all punk and meaningful. Punk is so political whether it is or isn't. And that's... okay. Because it's punk.

5. Suicide Girls. Naked punk girls. *They* think Brody Dalle (did you know she took her name from the film director Louis Dalle?) is really hot. And they're hot punk girls so they should know. In fact, Suicide Girls, a porn website, deserves a whole chapter in this book, because they're so punk. And feminist. Except the ones who aren't. And that's cool. Because they're so darn punk.

What I didn't learn... well, I'm 44 years old. I remember being in a fair sized city high school with maybe a dozen or two other kids who liked punk rock, and then moving to a small town where only two of us in a high school with 1200 kids liked punk (or even knew what it was). I've watched as the kind of kids who hated punk then have spawned the new generation of mall punks who like idiotic bubblegum punk, even though there's still great punk rock being made today. I kind of hoped this book might explain how that happened. I was mistaken.

Oh, and the writing style drove me nuts. Not just the repetition, and the "I must be able to work Brody Dalle into this chapter somehow" singlemindedness, and the way people who were quoted every second page were always identified as (for example) "Agent M of Tsunami Bomb" -- yeah, I remember, okay? -- but the way it reads like a nonfiction magazine article from Rolling Stone for Twelve-Year-Olds. Right down to the end of the book, which ends:

"Meet the new punk.

"Chances are it looks a lot like... *you.*"

Isn't that special?

Sloppy and disappointing
By Anonymous old punk
Every other negative review is right.

There's a good book to be written about punk in the 90s, the indie vs. mainstream history of the period and the questions about punk authenticity (and how much that idea really matters). This book was a big disappointment. Like other reviewers have pointed out, he's trying to make the Distillers the voice of neo-punk (which didn't really bother me - anybody writing a book like this is going to have a pet band), but it serves as a constant reminder of how this writer involves himself in the story he's telling; the whole thing is either poorly written or badly edited - everyone he quotes is introduced in full ("Tre Cool, drummer for Green Day") even if they were mentioned just a few paragraphs ago; he gets information wrong (Hermosa Beach, as someone pointed out, is not in Orange County, so when he starts complaining about the "OC-ification of punk" it's clear that he doesn't much know what he's talking about).

I should have quit reading when I hit the phrase "Meet the new punk. Definitely (italicized) not the same as the old punk." This is a guy who italicizes words for emphasis and paraphrases the Who when talking about punk. Dismal.

Giving Up: The Last Days of Sylvia Plath, by Jillian Becker

Giving Up is Jillian Becker’s intimate account of her brief but extraordinary time with Sylvia Plath during the winter of 1963, the last months of the poet’s life. Abandoned by Ted Hughes, Sylvia found companionship and care in the home of Becker and her husband, who helped care for the estranged couple’s two small children while Sylvia tried to rest. In clear-eyed recollections unclouded by the intervening decades, Becker describes the events of Sylvia’s final days and suicide: her physical and emotional state, her grief over Hughes’s infidelity, her mysterious meeting with an unknown companion the night before her suicide, and the harsh aftermath of her funeral. Alongside this tragic conclusion is a beautifully rendered portrait of a friendship between two very different women.

"I met her after she and her husband Ted Hughes had parted. We quickly became friends but only for the last few months of her life. She was lonely, almost friendless as well as husbandless. The flattering courtiers had departed with the king." —from Giving Up

“Jillian Becker fits in more good sense and compassion on the subject of Sylvia Plath than books ten times as long.”—The Independent (London)

Mental illness is a very sad disease. It never receives the attention warranted. Sylvia Plath was able to leave an amazing legacy for her children on one hand and was slowly drowning in her mind on the other.

In which a recent acquaintance of Sylvia Plath's attempts to comfort and protect the poet from herself during her last horrible days on this earth.
There is much that is scalding and unnecessary in this thin little book. It repeats so much of what we already know -- perhaps from Becker herself -- and is flawed by the author's insistent need to defend herself against (whose?) assumption that she should or could have "done something" to protect Plath from her compulsive need to kill herself. Well, maybe she could have or should have, but she didn't, as didn't many who knew her far better than Becker did, so there's really no need for all the justifications.
The lack of insight displayed here suggests that while Becker might have been stung by real or imagined criticism, she has done little in the last 40 years to understand the hopeless circumstances in which she found herself.
The fact that she barely knew Planth, but found it necessary to blather about it 40 years later, makes me wonder if there isn't a wee bit of the "cashing in" afoot on the part of the author.
Read the day after finishing Middlebrook's marvelous book on this subject, "Her Husband," I found it a total waste of paper.

Excellent Excellent Book!
By Cornflake Girl
While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I do find most reviewers glean the wrong thing from this book. Jillian Becker KNEW Sylvia Plath, knew her personally-- went to her home, gathered her belongings, allowed Plath to stay in her home, she even took care of Plath's children when Sylvia could not find the will to do so herself.

Another thing people misunderstand is the notion of suicide. If you are looking for the answer to WHY..the big WHY she "did it" then you have very little understanding of Sylvia herself, depression, and suicide. This book is not going to tie up any loose ends or give anyone anything they didn't have before--that's not what it's supposed to do...

It's a way of filling in the gaps; where the previous biographers, journalists, reporters, only knew the Plath they saw, spoke to, -- that which was reflected in her poetry -- no one really knew her like a good old friend, a friend that Jillian Becker was.

Beware: Becker is very honest, which is a good thing but some may not view it as such.

The book is very short, and rightfully so. Only a small amount of time (I believe it's 3 days or so) is covered here, and that's perfect. The back cover of the book contains a review from "The Independent" (London) which puts it perfectly: "Jillian Becker fits in more good sense and compassion on the subject of Sylvia Plath than books ten times as long."

From Publishers Weekly
This empathetic self-help book argues that when couples find out that they can't have a baby, they're inflicted with an "unacknowledged trauma that leaves them feeling not only frustrated and angry, but sad, frightened, confused, guilty, overwhelmed and out of control." Having found little support for their own struggles with infertility trauma, Jaffe and the Diamonds (all clinical psychologists) co-founded The Center for Reproductive Psychology in San Diego, Calif. Here they sympathetically cover the core psychological issues of the matter, including the initial shock and denial, the persistent feelings of not being "healthy" or "normal," the relationship problems, the loss of sexual privacy, the grief and the belief that you're not really an adult until you have a child. Using their own and their patients' experiences, the authors offer many approaches to these problems: journaling, talking about infertility with your partner, practicing rituals to validate the losses, incorporating structure into your daily life and seeking out support groups and therapy. But the most important step, they say, is to recognize infertility for the trauma that it is. "Your losses are real," they explain. "Infertility does not merely represent a recent failed pregnancy, but a whole lifetime of dreams, hopes and plans that have gone horribly awry." One in ten adults of reproductive age is affected by infertility. For them, and for the friends and professionals who want to help them, this book provides compassionate insight into infertility's often unacknowledged ramifications.

Good validation
By Nets
This book helps to explain why the journey of infertility is so painful. It was a very good validator. The only weakness for me is it primarily focuses on "the couple," and doesn't focus on a single woman on the journey which is my journey. Otherwise, excellent book...highly recommend.

Army Wives: The Unwritten Code of Military Marriage, by Tanya Biank

Army Wives goes beyond the sound bites and photo ops of military life to bring readers into the hearts and homes of today's military wives.

Biank tells the story of four typical Army wives who, in a flash, find themselves in extraordinary circumstances that ultimately force them to redefine who they are as women and wives. This is a true story about what happened when real life collided with army convention.

Army Wives is a groundbreaking narrative that takes the reader beyond the Army's gates, taking a close look at the other woman―the Army itself―and how its traditions, rules and war-time realities deeply impact marriage and home life.

From Publishers Weekly
In this insider's account of the sometimes-lethal strains that military life puts on families, Biank, an award-winning journalist and the daughter of a career army officer, finds much to admire in military spouses. She follows the lives of four women at Fort Bragg, N.C., home of the 82nd Airborne Division: the wife of a high-ranking officer who adds luster to her husband's career with her own polish; a senior noncommissioned officer's wife who ambivalently watches her son follow in his father's footsteps; a woman who falls in love with an enlisted man early in his career and struggles with balancing army demands with her own needs; and a former soldier who finds that the counterterrorist operative she married may be just as dangerous to her as he is to terrorists. Though her prose is sometimes clunky and some of the history feels a bit dated, Biank's novelistic sense of detail and suspense vividly demonstrates how "the Army... could bring couples closer together... or it could rip relationships apart." Army wives cope with unpredictable deployments and struggle to raise children alone, often on small paychecks, in a community both tightknit and sharply judgmental. "Army wives serve, too," says Biank—in an institution ambivalent about families. She makes sympathetic both their pride and their tragedies. (Feb.)

From Booklist
The author of this provocative portrait of modern army wives is herself an army wife and comes from an army family. That combination of experience and insight enhances the value of the book's depiction of the army-family community. Basically, army wives these days are more often than not educated professionals but are expected to function enmeshed in a unique hierarchy very different from anything in civilian life. Moreover, they are far more frequently required to move house and home than civilian wives, and their risk of suddenly becoming widows is constant. For this the army has established support networks, but again, those are sui generis. Overall, Biank furnishes a detailed reminder, if any is needed, that the military is still a hierarchical subculture dominated by male values that imposes a considerable burden on those semi-innocent quasi bystanders, army wives. A good choice for military collections of any size. Frieda Murray

Review

“...a timely look at the impact of combat and military life on the families the soldiers leave behind.” ―The Washington Post

“Army Wives captivates readers with an up close and personal look into the 'real' everyday lives and challenges of Army spouses. Kudos to Ms. Biank for portraying each spouse's story with such heartfelt compassion.” ―Victoria M. Parham, Host of Military Spouse Talk Radio

“Tanya Biank has written a stunningly detailed, eye-opening account of what it is really like to be an Army wife. Army Wives demonstrates that while it is tough to be a soldier, it can be even tougher to be the wife of a soldier. Army Wives should be required reading for every military spouse and all those who are considering marrying into the military.” ―Ron Martz , Military affairs correspondent, Atlanta Journal-Constitution and co-author of Heavy Metal: A Tank Company's Battle to Baghdad

“Tanya Biank captures the atmosphere of military living and the pressure brought to bear on young wives to measure up as partners in their husbands' careers. . . In reading this detailed and insightful book we receive some hope in the fact that the military administration has recognized and has taken steps to support both husbands and wives in the future.” ―Ann Jordan Klunder, National President, The Society of Daughters of the United States Army

“…Biank's novelistic sense of detail and suspense vividly demonstrates how ‘the Army…could bring couples closer together…or it could rip relationships apart.' Army wives cope with unpredictable deployments and struggle to raise children alone, often on small paychecks, in a community both tightknit and sharply judgmental. ‘Army wives serve, too,' says Biank – in an institution ambivalent about families. She makes sympathetic both their pride and their tragedies.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Biank has strong credentials for understanding and explaining army culture: in addition to having been a military reporter, she is the daughter and wife of army officers. Her very readable and thoughtful book delves into a rarely studied segment of the army.” ―Library Journal

“Biank has created a vivid picture of life today as a military spouse.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Tanya Biank's experience as a reporter has produced a candid and detailed study of her subjects and a riveting story, certain to engage Army wives of all generations. The incidents described and the issues surfaced in Ms. Biank's hard-hitting piece surely will get her readers' attentions and will cause us to say to each other, ‘Now, what can we do about it?'” ―Joanne Patton, the wife of Major General George S. Patton and the daughter-in-law of General George S. Patton, Jr.

“From tragic to bittersweet, this is the untold story of the wives of our Army warriors--a powerful look for civilians and soldiers alike into the lives of women who each day embrace Duty, Honor, Sacrifice.” ―W.E.B. Griffin

“In Under the Sabers, Tanya Biank invites civilians into the military world, a foreign culture. She introduces us to the true meaning of honor and duty as we see the strains on wives with a spouse serving in a war zone. She richly describes the bonds among military families that serve to support a wife during her spouse's deployments and simultaneously may limit her autonomy. Under the Sabers shows that military families are both the hidden casualties of war and a resilient group who meet the challenges for growth during every deployment. Tanya Biank helps those of us who work with families of deployed soldiers become better able to understand and serve them.” ―Dr. Jaine L. Darwin, PsyD Harvard professor, Clinical Instructor in Psychology, Harvard Medical School and Co-Director, SOFAR, Strategic Outreach to Families of All Reservists

“Thank you for putting a voice to the hardships and triumphs of this military life.” ―Tara Crooks, host of Army Wife Talk Radio

“A very realistic and enjoyable read about the pains and pleasures of military life.” ―www.militarybrat.com

Heavy Reading
By Rockysgal
I am an Army wife and was thrilled to see a modern look at the military wife. The book is extremely well written. The characters were brought out in a manner that humanized them rather than stereotyped. The book is about Army wives at Ft. Bragg during a short time period and does not truly show how happy a lot of us really are. I finished the book and felt really depressed about the deaths and suicides on Ft. Bragg. The 82nd is unique and many Army wives never set foot there. I am a former soldier as well as the spouse of an Army man with 24 years in and we still love it. We do not just help out during funerals. The fun is missing in this book. It is fun to be part of it all-- we are not duty bound to help each other. We do it because we want to do it. The book also keeps bringing up "clean houses" as if that were the most important thing we care about. She mentions funerals and what woman would want a crowd coming through her house without the chance to straighten up. One of the best Army wife moments I ever had was at West Point when another Army family stopped by at 11am on a Sunday morning and seeing the chaos that my house was in just after church she quickly smiled and said, "I live in my house too." That is what Army wives are really like. There are truly many awesome wives out there and more great marriages than bad. The book focuses on mostly bad marriages and tragedy. In this operational environment I was hoping for an inspirational book about Army wives. This book is a page-turner and I could not put it down. After re-reading the jacket I can say the book does advertise itself as being just what it is, but the publicity around the book suggests it gives insight into the world of all Army wives.

5 stars for Army Wives
By Janice King
I didn't start watching the TV show until I read this book. We lived in Fayetteville/Ft. Bragg for 19 years and I know where all of the places are that the author is talking about. My husband retired at Ft. Bragg and it will always be a part of us even though we live in another state now. Army Wives brought back so many memories of army life there. It was great. I actually read my daughter's copy then bought my own. The characters are fantastic. It's great reading about real wives who have actually been through more than I did since my husband retired before 9/11. It tells about wives lives from different aspects because of their husbands' rank. It tells it like it is. I love knowing that with the soldiers deployed, the families can develop close relationships with the families of the soldiers their spouses work with. True Army wives do stay true to the Army and it's code. They are strong independent women because they have to be. I recommend this book for those who are not familiar with the Army life and want to know the wife's side.

The Scariest Place in the World: A Marine Returns to North Korea, by James Brady

"This powerful narrative is an endearing piece of warrior's nostalgia, written with the accustomed skill by a seasoned writer."
---Publishers Weekly
"Graceful, even elegant, and always eloquent tribute to men at arms in a war that, in a way, never ended."
---Kirkus Reviews
"James Brady has done it again. A riveting and illuminating insight into a dark corner of the world."
---Tim Russert, NBC's Meet the Press

Half a century after he fought there as a young lieutenant of Marines, James Brady returns to the brooding Korean ridgelines and mountains to sound taps for a generation. It's been fifteen years since Brady first wrote of Korea in The Coldest War, drawing raves from Walter Cronkite and The New York Times, which called it "a superb personal memoir of the way it was."

In the spring of 2003, Brady and Pulitzer Prize–winning combat photographer Eddie Adams flew in Black Hawk choppers and trekked the Demilitarized Zone where it meanders into North Korea, interviewing four-star generals and bunking in with tough U.S. recon troops, in Brady's words, "raw meat on the point of a sharpened stick." Brady recalls that first time on bloody Hill 749, the men who died there, what happened to the Marines who lived to make it home, and experiences yet again the emotional pull of a lifelong love affair with the Corps in which they all served.

Brady summons up the past and illuminates the present, be it the Korea of "the forgotten war," the Yanks who fought there long ago, or today's soldiers standing wary sentinel over "the scariest place in the world." The result is uplifting, inspiring, often heartbreaking, and this new Brady memoir proves as powerful as his first.

Returning to Korea, Brady revisits some of the places where he fought as a Marine platoon commander. In the opening, Brady finds his old battlefield of Hill 749 within sight of North Korean emplacements, although well-defended by a South Korean army vastly improved from what he remembers from 50-plus years ago. The rest of the narrative shifts back and forth, beginning with the author's nerve-wracking stroke to his going to Korea to write the Parade article on which this book is based. As Brady rides through Seoul with skyscrapers on every side, he remembers seeing it in 1951, when there wasn't a building taller than two stories left standing. Fellow Marines, from "the Skipper" (the company commander, the late Rhode Island governor and senator John Chaffee) on down, appear in their old age, and in their youth when they faced the Chinese with everything from artillery to bayonets. Brady, who expresses grave reservations about the Iraq War, sometimes moves from topic to topic fast enough to lose readers, but this book marks a highly admirable addition to his distinguished body of work. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Brady's latest on the Korean War takes its title from Bill Clinton's description of North Korea, which Brady looked into from the DMZ from Hill 749, which his company had assaulted in 1951, when he revisited South Korea. The place lived up to the description, although some things had changed. His escorts now included women officers, and Seoul was a mass of skyscrapers rather than of rubble. The book shifts back and forth from historical to contemporary scenes somewhat jerkily; on the whole, the historical passages are vivider, with their depictions of World War I-style trench warfare making a comeback and the Chinese proving themselves proficient, persistent opponents. The contemporary scenes become most eloquent when Brady pays tribute to old comrades, including the late Senator John Chaffee of Rhode Island, who commanded Brady's company. Marines tend to wax eloquent when saying farewell to fellow marines; Brady, a polished writer even under ordinary circumstances, is no exception. Roland Green

Review
"James Brady has done it again. A riveting and illuminating insight into a dark corner of the world."--Tim Russert, NBC's Meet the Press "His evocation of their lives and his lost youth is most moving, and so, too, are his notes on the passing of former comrades... Graceful, even elegant, and always eloquent tribute to men at arms in a war that, in a way, never ended."
--Kirkus

Great author - great book
By Allen E. Humphries
Brady is a great writer. This is basically like a recorded personal conversation with him. He has a very relaxed, easy to stay with style - even when discussing the life-threatening parts. And - he obviously knows what he's talking about!

Grumpy Old Men Visit the DMZ
By W. B Crews
An extremely well-written book. However, if Seinfeld was a show "about nothing" then this book a book "about nothing."

The plot: A reluctant James Brady succumbs to the blandishments of his employer, Parade Magazine, to revisit the scene of his combat tour in the Korean War and the subject of his book, The Coldest War, and write about the experience. On this journey he is accompanied by another aging warrior, Eddie Adams, the Pulitzer Prize winning photographer (General Loan capping a captured VC in Saigon during Tet 1968). Brady hopes, apparently, to regain some of his lost youth in the experience.

Brady and Adams make the trip but Brady is disappointed at every turn. He tries repeatedly to get American officers to refer to the troops in 2ID as a "tripwire" and is miffed when they won't. The troops on the DMZ have hot food and hot showers. They live in concrete bunkers with TV and internet access. And so on and so on. The trenches and barbed wire are gone. His ROK Army host (doesn't speak English which is a disqualifier from command, apparently) tries to be polite to the traveling geezers and receives scorn for his efforts. Nothing is ever quite as hard as it was back in '52.

Brady comes across as an embittered cynic who can't resist taking gratuitous swipes at the US Army, the ROK Army, and strangely the British Army's Gloucestershire Regiment for reasons that are never really clear other than his need to be an embittered cynic.

Fortunately I checked this book out of the library so I was only out of my time.

Sweet & Crazy, by Patty Dann

Poignant and bittersweet, Sweet & Crazy is the story of a single mother coping with the extremes of life.

At thirty-nine, Hanna Painter has returned to her hometown of Ash Creek, Ohio. Since Hanna's husband, Ed, has died of cancer, Hanna has been raising her precocious four-year old son, Pete, on her own. Mother and son are dealing with their loss in different ways. Hanna is teaching older women to write their life stories at the local YMCA. Pete starts kindergarten and has quickly found a best friend in Omar, the Indian son of Mazur, who runs the local cleaners.

Next door to Hanna and Pete lives Thomas Winton, a provocative middle-aged man who works as a cooper at the eighteenth century colonial restoration outside of town.

Hanna, Thomas, and Pete have just begun to form a fragile new family when the World Trade Center is attacked.

Hanna struggles with the challenges of raising a son alone, romance, and racism as the once-peaceful town of Ash Creek faces the new century.

From Publishers Weekly
Using September 11 as a backdrop, Dann (Mermaids) examines issues of death, racism and widowhood in smalltown America. Hanna's husband, Ed, died of brain cancer at 45, leaving her to raise their four-year-old son, Pete. Hanna, 39, who teaches creative writing to retirees at the Y in Ash Creek, Ohio, is just starting to move on when terrorists attack the U.S. For Pete, the tragedy is simple: "A plane of bad guys crashed into a control tower at the airport. Some kids got to leave school early." But for other people in Hanna's world-namely, her friend Mazur, the South Asian-American proprietor of the local dry-cleaning shop-the events have a much greater impact. Mazur becomes a victim of hate crimes, and Hanna even receives threats (due to her Jewish ancestry, an anomaly in Ash Creek). Meanwhile, a concurrent story line reveals Hanna's developing romance with her next-door neighbor, Thomas, who works at an 18th-century colonial village on the edge of town. Although the story is fairly straightforward, it covers some weighty issues, which Dann addresses in sparse, almost childlike prose. "All I wanted was life to be regular for Pete," Hanna thinks immediately after September 11. Later, planning Pete's birthday party, she reports, "The next days I was abuzz with birthday plans, as much as one woman can be abuzz." Although the book feels at times like the first draft of a deeper, richer reflection, Dann nonetheless offers a simple, genuine tale of renewal after loss.

From Booklist
Free-spirit Hanna is a journal-writing teacher at the YMCA in Ash Creek, Ohio, whose husband dies from brain cancer in August 2001. After he's gone, she struggles to be both mother and father to their four-year-old son, Pete. Coming to the rescue is her neighbor, Thomas, who knows to take Pete to the batting cages or to baby-sit when Pete has a fever. Pete's best friend, Omar, is the son of one of the town's few minority families, and it is through their struggle with racism after 9/11 that Hanna and Pete are affected by that tragic day. As she did in her first novel, Mermaids (1983), Dann offers a distinctive concoction of tragedy and humor: a trip with her husband to peruse cemetery plots is leavened by a Reds baseball game emanating from a radio, and Hanna raises her spirits by repeating mantralike snippets from her library book, Widows of the World. Perceptive handling of the rippling effects of 9/11 makes this a unique offering in the ever-popular single-parent genre. Deborah Donovan

Review
Advance praise for Sweet & Crazy

"An achingly poignant portrait of a young widow struggling to patch together a new life for herself and her young son, against the backdrop of 9/11. Moving, funny, and rendered with a kind of quiet grace that borders on magical."
-Caroline Leavitt, author of Girls In Trouble

Praise for Mermaids

"A first novel both hilarious and tragic... A radiant debut."
--The New York Times

"This is a really funny book about people trying to find something to hang onto in a world that keeps shifting under their feet. Patty Dann guides us through the guerilla war between mother and daughter, through the minefields that lie between being a child and being an adult in a voice not like any we've heard before."
--John Sayles

"Delightfully comic...quirky...resonant."

Hope and Humanity in Life After a Loss
By istar schwager
There's lots of quirky, original dialogue in this book about how a widow and her young son cope in the months after the death of their husband and dad. One of the best things about Sweet & Crazy is how it captures not just the language but the thinking of a four- year old whose curiosity and startlingly honesty keep his mom focused on pancakes, training wheels and kindergarten instead of her Widows of the World reference book. As each month passes, Hanna and Pete change. Hanna begins a romance with her next door neighbor, a cooper in an colonial restoration. Pete becomes friends with a classmate from India whose family is touched by 9/11. The very human characters in this book do their best to cope with the challenges of life; some mundane and some monumental. The details are wonderful and this book will resonate for anyone who has kids, and anyone who has experienced loss but still has to do the grocery shopping.

A poignant yet upbeat story of loss and renewal.
By A Customer
Patty Dann has created a delicate miniature of a book; small, yet it covers monumental events, both in the narrator's personal life as well as in the topsy turvy world around her. Hanna, grief-stricken at losing her young husband to cancer and the stark reality that she must bring up her four year old son alone, is forced with little warning, into unknown territory. Now a "window," as Pete, her zesty little son puts it, in his unerringly honest way, adjusting is often painful but also contains some sweet surprises. Hanna's gradual acceptance of her forever altered life, with the gracious help of an unusual neighbor, makes for a satisfying, sweet and slightly crazy tale. It is a highly enjoyable book.

just right for the average solver - not too had so that you don't come close to finishing but certainly not too easy either. A great bargain for the price. Also the material it is printed on makes it easy to write on in pe nwhich might sound petty but I don't like writing on a really glossy finish which some publishers use for puzzles.

It is what it is and it is great.
By Joe Schmoe reviewer
I was buying the NY Times everyday just so I could do the puzzle at lunchtime at the office. In the area I lived, it was $1 a day! Do the math. This collection saved me a bundle.

As a habitual crossword puzzler, I switched from habitually buying the paper each morning to habitually zeroxing the next puzzle in this book. I found it much easier to copy the puzzles than to hold this rather bulky tome. And copying allowed me to enlarge them to a full letter size page if I so desired (though it was not necessary -- the puzzles are their normal dimensions and fit two-to-a-page in this collection).

Working off a copy also discouraged me from turning the page and starting a different puzzle when I got stuck on the really tough Friday and Saturday puzzles.

If you're a habitual puzzler, this book is a god send.

Bottom line(s): The price is obviously fantastic. The collection is obviously HUGE! The puzzles are just like the daily paper -- from Monday-easy to Saturday-nearly-impossible. I never ran into a puzzle I remembered doing in the paper.

No cons, but some advice... It's not the kind of book you'll want to carry around since it is, of course, large. And if you're not a habitual puzzler, it might end up on a shelf unused since it is a daunting number of puzzles.

Also, in case you're a novice puzzler, the NY Times puzzles can get pretty hard. If you're used to clues like, "Wheel OF Fortune's Sajak" for p-a-t, you're in for a challenge. Instead, you'll be getting "foie gras" for p-a-t-e. (Frequent foreign language clues, people you've never heard of, obscure island names, etc.)

The good news is that your vocabulary will expand and you'll learn a lot more than you would from the TV guide puzzle. I know I've learned a lot from the NY Times puzzles. Thank you, Will Shortz.

And, in case you haven't figured it out, the "Search inside this book" link above will get you the first 12 puzzles! If you like them, there are 989 more to go!

Many hours of entertainment in an inexpensive volume
By Ramesh Gopal
If you have tried and liked the crossword puzzles in the New York Times, but do not subscribe to the newspaper, this book is for you. It is certainly more cost effective than subscribing just for the puzzles. There is also a crossword only online subscription option, incidentally, but this book probably packs more bang for the buck. If you have not previously solved New York Times puzzles, it's worth trying a few before you buy the book.

A few things to be aware of: The daily puzzles in the paper increase in difficulty from Monday to Friday. As far as I can tell, the ones in the book are not arranged in any particular order. Also this is a compilation of puzzles that appeared over the past decade. In so far as a few questions deal with ongoing events, they are now harder than back when the events were in the news. Non-New Yorkers may be stumped by allusions to local personalities.

On the whole the book should provide many hours of entertainment.
