About the Author

Stuart Campbell M.D. is the past president of The International Society of Ultrasound in Obstretics and Gynecology and is currently Editor-in-Chief of this society's medical journal. He is a pioneer of ultrasound diagnosis and holds many international honors, including Honorary Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Excellent photos and descriptions! Perfect for new mothers

Nobody has reviewed this great book yet, so I thought I'd write my first review and this book's first review. There are a lot of fetal development books with nice drawings, and even lots of ultrasound books. Two things set this book apart. First, the photos here are unbelievable--the author uses the latest in ultrasound technology to give a real 3-dimensional view inside the womb. And while the real magic is probably seeing these videos live, he gives frame-by-frame "filmstrips" to show you the movement of babies yawning, walking, etc. Second, the book is writing in a great conversational style, demonstrating to the reader that the baby growing inside is a real person that reacts to the world around them. A great gift for expectant mothers to see what's going on inside, and especially for explaining to a child what is happening. From only a few weeks, amazing things are going on inside that little world. 5-stars!

Must have book for anyone expecting

I have a lot of books about pregnancy and this is by far my absolute favorite. I am currenty on my second pregnancy and still every week I grab the book to see what my baby looks like this week. The photos are great and there is something special about seeing exactly what the baby looks like inside of you at that moment. This book makes an EXCELLENT gift for anyone who has just found out that they are expecting. Each week there is also a tidbit of information on any developmental milestones reached that week. This book is so simple and easy to read and well, just looking at the pictures makes you feel a stronger bond with your baby.

Concise, informative, not too technical

I've always thought that 3-D ultrasound images look weird and distorted. I still do, but this is a great little book that gives a nice basic overview of the development of the fetus in the womb. Good to give to dads ;)

Starred Review. A searing, emotional portrait of a son who wants nothing more than the love his father will not grant him, Burroughs's latest memoir (after 2004's Dry) is indeed powerful. Absent is the wry humor of Running with Scissors and the absurd poignancy of Burroughs's years living with his mother's Svengali-like psychiatrist. Instead, Burroughs focuses on the years he lived both in awe and fear of his philosophy professor father in Amherst, Mass. Despite frequent trips with his mother to escape his father's alcoholic rages, Burroughs was determined to win his father's affection, secretly touching the man's wallet and cigarettes and even going so far as to make a surrogate dad with pillows and discarded clothing. Only after his father's neglect—or cruelty—leads to the death of Burroughs's beloved guinea pig during one of the family's many separations does the son turn against the father. Avoiding self-pity, Burroughs paints his father with unwavering honesty, forcing the reader to confront, as he did, a man who even on his deathbed, refused his son a hint of affection. His father missed so much, Burroughs muses, not knowing his son. Luckily, Burroughs does not deny the reader such an enormous pleasure. (Apr.)

Burroughs’ childhood was the stuff of nightmares long before he was adopted by his troubled mother’s therapist (a harrowing experience rendered to brutal and often hilarious effect in his 2002 best-seller, Running with Scissors). His earliest years were spent in fear of his biological father, John, an alcoholic with a chilling smile and a black heart. All young Augusten ever wanted was his dad’s attention and approval. He rarely received either. In fact, the late John G. Robison, head of the philosophy department at the University of Massachusetts, seemed to derive pleasure from making his son suffer. When Augusten and his mother fled the house following one of John’s liquor-fueled rampages, the mean, moody man promised to care for his son’s beloved pet gerbil. Instead, he left the animal to die. Augusten dreaded the idea that he was just like his father, a fear that grew deeper with each passing year. Following the publication of Running with Scissors, Burroughs was sued by his adoptive family, who claimed his book was fraught with hyperbole and lies. One almost hopes that this sad, sporadically funny offering took some liberties with the truth. Expect lots of interest in Burroughs’ first memoir in five years. --Allison Block

When Dad is bad

Having read all of Augusten Burroughs' books, I was hesitant to read this one after I saw some of the negative reviews. But I stand corrected. I think readers who didn't like this book were expecting the hilarity of Running With Scissors and Dry. Wolf at the Table doesn't have the funny-disturbing stories you're used to with Burroughs. Rather, the book is simply disturbing (and heartfelt at the same time). I loved this book. He is stunningly honest, and his detailing of events through the lens of a child is poignant and gripping. It really makes you realize the importance of being a good parent and how much influence, good and bad, you can have on your child.

Another Excellent Memoir from Augusten Burroughs

In "A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of My Father", by Augusten Burroughs, we learn about his father. Burroughs details what life was like living with his father. He shares a lot of personal information with the reader. At times, his father was abusive to him, both physically and mentally. He tells us about his father's alcoholism. The book is very well written. At times, it is touching and sad. Fans of Burroughs will enjoy this memoir.

Not prepared for how much this book would affect me

First of all, let me say this: I adore Augusten Burroughs. I've read everything by him more than once. I knew going into this book that it was going to be different from his other books b/c I'd read some of the reviews. I'm not someone who is put off by darkness, in the least, so didn't think it would be a problem for me not having the humor of most of his books to counteract the sorrow. And it wasn't, I loved that he was trying something different and thought his style of writing was poetic and beautiful. In a way though I am not really qualified to give this book a review and I apologize that I am but I felt I needed too. The reason I say I might not be qualified is because I was unable to finish this book. That has NEVER happened to me before. I don't know if it was b/c I already "know" and love him so much that I was so affected & clearly it brought up things for me(I've had my own horrendous childhood which is why I repsond so much to his work)...but there was literally one scene in the middle of the book that was so horrific and heartbreaking that I couldn't stop crying and had to put the book down. (I won't say the scene b/c I don't want to spoil anything for anyone but since one reviewer already mentioned it, it involves one of the pets dying). That was mths ago & I haven't been able to bring myself to pick the book up again. Really it's a testament to his writing that I was so affected I'm sure. And I was tempted to just give the book 4 or 5 stars but since I didn't finish it, didn't feel right doing that either. So the purpose of my review is simply this...I assume many others who are drawn to his work also can relate in some way & have some version of their own difficult childhood. SO I just wanted to say, if you are REALLY sensitive(esp. to things involving animals which I am), just please be prepared before you read this to go to an extrmely dark place w/ him. & just to be clear, because it's dark doesn't make it any less beautiful. Maybe I will come back and write another review when I can actually make it through the rest of the book. :)

Informative without being overwhelming

My husband and I bought this book when we were talking about trying to start a family. I find the dictionary-style name books to be overwhelming, with name after name listed right after one another. The style of this book makes it much easier to read through and pick out names you like without having information overload. It's true that some names are repeated on different lists, but that's because they fit into the different categories, and I found enough uniqueness from list to list so that it didn't really bother me.
There's a great section that lists classic names for girls and boys that goes into more detail about the origin and meaning of the name, well-know people who share the name and other interesting trivia, but largely this is a book that breaks names down into various categories without detailing meanings. I thought one of the most interesting sections was the list of top 10 names by country.
We've used the book to cross out those names we don't like, circle the ones we do and try to narrow down names from there. Much easier to do that here than in a book packed with just alphabetical columns of names and a word or two about their meaning, in my opinion. This isn't the right book for everyone, but it was definitely the best choice for us.

Wish I hadn't spent the money

Mostly gives ideas on how to name and not name your child. Lists names in categories such as modern, traditional, etc. but none of the names are ones that I hadn't heard before and there is no descriptions to go along with the names.

I love this name book!

It is so much more than a name book -- it is actually a good read! We really got so little out of the books that just list thousands of names. This book really makes you think through the pros and cons of different names and how they will be perceived. As it turns out, we avoided a boy's name that we had liked for its sound & meaning, but was listed as trendy (it is!), confusing for having 2 different spellings (there are!) and now being used by celebrities as a girl's name (gasp!) -- all as predicted by this book. (We chose Thomas James instead.)
I now buy it for all my friends when they tell me they are pregnant for the first time. You can beat the humor & good information all rolled into one.

About the Author

Tommy Hays is executive director of the Great Smokies Writing Program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and creative writing chair for the Academy at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. His novel In The Family Way received the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award in 2000 and was a choice of the Book-of-the-Month Club. He is a graduate of Furman University and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with his wife and two children.

A Fine Addition to Southern Literature's Canon

Imagine being assigned a creative paper to write by an English professor in which you're given an aging pair as characters to depict. Of the two, one has a debilitating illness, the other trying to cope with it. You're to write the paper as taking place over a summer, with no particularly dramatic events (i.e., no trainwrecks, no police chases, no grisly murders, no mano a mano fights). Yet you're to write a compelling, emotional story.
If you were to look for a "go-by" as an example, you'd do well to pick up and read Tommy Hays' latest, "The Pleasure Was Mine." Hays writes softly, with an almost delicate touch about his two characters, husband Prate Marshbanks and wife Irene, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. They're something of an odd couple, but a loving one, and Prate must find the best way to cope with this disease. The story also adds seasoning through their son Newell and grandson Jackson.
Jackson comes to live with Prate over the summer while Newell, an artist, attends a summer art colony. Here, Prate must contend with both the sadness of failing age, the alienation of a son, and the subsequent promise of youth. How this plays out is the meat of Hays' fine story.
The Marshbanks drama occurs in the South Carolina upcountry and the mountains of western North Carolina, and Hays gives us enough of a feel for this terrain and its heritage to claim geography as yet another character. This, of course, is the way of Southern literature.
I've always been drawn to writing that evokes mood - say Steinbeck, for instance, and in the South, the poetry of James Dickey - and Hays shows able writerly chops in this respect. He edges from scene to scene by nimble steps, some evoking humor, but a humor leavened with sadness - no small feat, that.
His depiction of Prate Marshbanks, in first person, dwells consistently on the character of a man finding it difficult to contend with change, a man determined to live self-sufficiently. His evocation of wife Irene is a tender one that captures both the debilitation of her disease and the strength of the human soul. And through Newell and Jackson, Hays allows Prate to find a solace his self-sufficiency urge couldn't have found room for.
If I have to be forced to fault-find here, it's in the depiction of the boy, Jackson, who is sometimes mute, sometimes all-too-adult in his interaction with parent and grandparents. But here I'm somewhat grasping at straws in trying to be objective.
This is a fine addition to Southern literature's canon, a story to both inform one's thoughts and warm the heart.

Best self-help book out there.

Now that my marriage has blown up in my face and I'm contemplating whether or not I should just give men a miss for the rest of my life and wondering if woman can live by toy drawer alone, I've been going through self-help relationship books like pints of Ben & Jerry. Every one has seemed like the wrong fit--if women are from Venus I must be from Neptune or something. Most of the books just alienate me. This one fits and is full of heartfelt good advice along with an at turns hilarious and touching fictional autobiography. As I was reading I was laughing out loud and nodding my head saying, "Hell yes!" One of the best parts of the book is "The Grrl Genius 'A Four-Year-Old Has Better Rules than The Rules' Comparison Table, where her niece blows The Rules out of the water. And how can you not love a book celebrating the central importance of chocolate and good lingerie? Now I'm wondering how many other women out there have watched Backdraft with the sound off? I thought I was the only one. This book puts you in a place where your eyes open, and you see exactly what you have been doing wrong in your relationships, and it doesn't tell you how to change your taste in men it simply changes your taste in men, like a magic trick.

You're Gonna Love This Book

I said this after reading her first book, "Grrl Genius Guide to Life" and I'll say it after reading this one. Cathryn Michon is an original. I love her stories, I love her observations, I love her wacky brilliance. She is hilarious and wise. I am neither a girl nor a genius, but it works for me!

Mark Dunn is a lifelong word lover and the author of Ella Minnow Pea (nominee for Book Sense Adult Fiction Book of the Year, and winner of the Borders Original Voices Awards for fiction), Welcome to Higby (short listed by Publishers Weekly as one of the best novels of the year), and Ibid: A Life. He makes his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A Handy Reference Tool (for writers of dialogue)

As a writer of fiction, I purchased ZOUNDS hoping for a comprehensive dictionary of interjections used in dialogue, and I was not disappointed.

In addition to the definition, many entries include anecdotal information, the origin of the interjection, and a comment on the timeframe of usage. For example, "as if" was first recorded in 1905, "score!" was popular among teenagers in the 1990's, and "hey, Abbott!" has not been used much since the 1950s. That information might save a writer of historical or near historical fiction from making an embarrassing blunder. Also quite valuable is the nine-page index at the end of the book, which provides a concise list of dialogue possibilities from aaayy to zzzzzp.

For general use, I agree with Dennis Laycock's review that this is a good book for the WC. For writers of dialogue, it's a handy reference tool.

Good book for the W.C.

Sitting down to read this book for an extended period of time is probably not a good idea; it's a bit dry for that. However, it's great for reading in five- or 10-minute spurts, thus - it's perfect for the bathroom.

Not to insult the author, who does a fine job of documenting the birth of hundreds of interjections. The story about Kipling and Twain competing to write the most ribald story is one I'll not forget. And I picked up a few obscure interjections that I plan to use and freak people out once in a while.

Pfft! Gut Shabbes! Fiddle-dee-dee! Bully! Toy toy! Ooh la la!

Let's face it, language would be a lot more boring without interjections, those odd little flourishes to emphasize whatever we're saying ("Drat! I dropped the cake!"). In "ZOUNDS!: A Browser's Dictionary of Interjections," Mark Dunn dissects the various interjections we say, and what they mean.

From "aayyy" to "zzzzp!", Dunn explores various interjections from the past and present, and they're a surprisingly colourful bunch -- there's the obvious little ones like "ah," "oh," "eh," and "aaaarrruuugah," which are mainly convenient noises.

But he also exxplores obscure little words ("beero!"), and ones that were used long ago or have fallen into disuse ("beauseant!"). Not to mention ones from other cultures ("Gut shabbes!"), or from movies ("Keeks!" "Nee!"). A disproportionate number seem to euphemisms for God ("Gosh all hemlock!"), or some rather impolite words ("Fudge!").

But he doesn't just tell us about these words, or what they mean. For example, it turns out that "ods bodkins" is actually a corruption of "God's bodkins" -- loosely translated, "God's little body," which was considered a very wicked phrase in Elizabethan times. Or that "slogan" is derived from an ancient Gaelic call to arms. Betcha didn't know any of that.

Moreover, Dunn explains them in an easy, chatty manner, as if he were a pal imparting various linguistic trivia. And he peppers the whole book with pop culture and literary references, as well as little "skits" to emphasize what they mean ("Dear girl, you have just destroyed all my cultures of the antibacterial Penicillium notatum!" "Oops!").

Even better, some of these interjections are so rare that they can serve two purposes: first, to serve as party trivia, such as "Did you know that the word 'begorra' may be connected to vivisection?". Second, some of them would make wonderful insults that no one can reply to.

"ZOUNDS!: A Browser's Dictionary of Interjections" is not only vastly entertaining, but tells us a lot about a part of language that nobody really thinks about. Imbars bidbib!

Helpful, easy to understand ways to reduce your debt

This book is wonderful! I read it last night, and have already begun some of the steps she recommends. Between credit cards, personal loans, and student loans, we owe nearly $48,000. I have been attempting to do my own version of a debt reduction plan, but by making sporadically large payments, amid minimum monthly payments--now I understand that it makes more sense to gradually increase payments on one debt until it is paid off, then to add that amount to the next debt, and so on...My husband and I will be completely debt-free--including Student Loans!--by the end of 2004!

Finally we get the truth, based on research

Every investor wants to be smart,pick that promising stock nobody knows about, beat the markets, cash in all these profits and talk about the success at the next dinner party. Well, there are thousands of those individuals out there, stock brokers, mutual fund managers, wealth advisors - you name it - all hunting for the same, day by day, long hours a day, all year long....One or two even maybe smarter than you. No way to beat that. The desire to beat the market by actively managing portfolios is called "the loser's game". Now, what's the solution ?

Larry Swedroe has done sincere research on the topic and is coming to the conclusion that investing in index funds, passively managed funds and similar vehicles is the smartest way to participate in the big picture,the markets.On the long run the most profitable and cost saving too.This is called the "winner's game".These investments usually are available on a cost basis less than 1% opposed to actively managed funds with annual cost of up to several % p.a. These annual cost are you paying regerdless whether or not the markets are going up or down.
No banker, broker or wealth advisor ever has mentioned this strategy to me. For good reason: they almost don't make money with those.
The book among other topics is talking about one's ability to take risks, about the diversication of risk, even gives some examples for portfolios based on different risk levels. An much much more.

The reading is easy, enjoyable and very convincing. The only negative I have to say about this book is:I deeply regret not having had the opportunity to read something like that some years earlier.Thank you Larry!

The Way Smart Money Invests Today

This book is 2004 the investment book of the year. Its philosophy is based on the principles of modern portolio theory (MPT) and the efficient market hypothesis (EMH). It provides a road map to a long term winning investment strategy. It clearly lays out the case against active management (stock picking and market timing) and for passive management, and it explains why diversification is the winning strategy. Following this road map will make you a better informed and more effective investor. Part 1 provides the evidence why active strategies are called the loser's game. Part 2 describes how markets really work. The remainder of the book explains how to implement the winning strategy in a way that will meet your ability, willingness and perhaps, most important, your need to take risk. It describes how you can win the investment game through long term investments in such indexes such as the S&P 500 or Wilshire 5000 instead of through the active buying and selling. It is more productive to invest an stay invested. As Warren Buffett said:" We continue to make money when snooring than when active. Also, passive investors as a group earn higher after tax returns than active investors. As Bogle stated: "As the logicians would say, QED. So it is demonstrated". Digest this book and you will be rewarded accordingly.

Marriage Of Theory And Practice

Quite simply, this is the best investment book I have ever read.

A do-it-yourself investor for the last 15 years, I have read broadly in the area of investment, both books and periodicals. I am throwing out most of my financial literature, and replacing it with this single volume.

The book promotes Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT), which espouses exclusively passive investments (index mutual funds, index ETFs) over a variety of asset classes. An enormous body of research is cited supporting MPT. The author explains the theory's underpinnings in ordinary, clear language, sprinkling the narrative with anecdotes, concrete real-life situations, metaphors, history, famous and not-so-famous quotes, making it easy to understand the theory and its applications in the real world. The clarity, factual underpinnings, and logic behind MPT make it rationally irresistible.

As strong as the book is on theory, it is equally strong as a how-to manual. The author outlines a meticulously detailed, step-by-step plan for implementing MPT, making it an effective investing tool for an individual willing to take the time and effort.

Maximum benefits can be achieved from the book by those willing to be honest with themselves and face their own shortcomings.
