From Publishers Weekly
Targeting managers, salespeople, professional speakers and even best men preparing wedding toasts, communications and leadership consultants Maxey and O'Connor provide useful advice and moral support to anyone who is about to speak up. Through judicious peppering of personal stories, they demystify the near-universal fear of speaking in public, while offering potential speakers at all skill levels encouragement and practical advice. The guide is organized for ease of navigation in short, snappy chapters, each concluding with a boldfaced summary of key points—a boon to time-crunched presenters. Among numerous pointers, the authors emphasize practicing your speech, especially in front of someone or by timing and taping yourself. The authors conclude that any speech is "all about you in conversation with the audience"; they stress the importance of knowing your audience and their language, achieving rapport with repetition and with stories, and making an immediate connection with a creative introduction. Though some of their advice is common sense (e.g., attend to your appearance), inexperienced speechmakers in particular will find this manual instructive. (June)

Good, but dated
By Amazon Customer
This book has a considerable number of useful points for the speaker - but a lot less for the presenter. Maxey and O'Connor have a combined total of more than 45 years experience of professional speaking, so it doesn't take much to realize that they both probably started before the age of PowerPoint - and they don't like it.

They talk of flipcharts, which don't work well for audiences over 30 people, and there are a whole lot of techniques that they recommend that work well for people who don't use a projector but work against those who have spent time on slides.

That isn't to say that if you use slides you won't pick up any useful techniques here, but be careful before you implement some of them. I had to check the date of first publication because I though this was a new edition of an older book.

Like many books on presenting, they throw up ideas that aren't really explained enough to be useful, like "End Unexpectedly." But what really makes me think that they realize what readers they're dealing with is when they say "finish early - your audience will love you." Yes, on one level, they will, but this also gives me the impression that they think that you'll be bad, no matter what advice they give you, so get off as soon as you can.

Buy this book if you're looking for ideas wherever you can find them, and some ideas might be very useful, like the "Never Apologize" chapter. But be aware it's not really aimed at the typical presenter, so you'll have to pick and choose your advice carefully.

Inside secrets you need to be a GREAT speaker
By TJ Walker
According to Cyndi Maxey and Kevin E. O'Connor, authors of "Present Like A Pro," (St. Martin's Griffin 2006), a professional level speaker always ends unexpectedly. When I first read that I thought "Huh?"

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how correct Maxey and O'Connor are. Too many speakers feel they can just end by saying "and in conclusion, my three key points are blah, blah, and blah." Your ending is a great place to shine by showing flashes of creativity--don't blow it.

Some speakers do end unexpectedly because they seem to run out of gas. They say "That's it, any questions?" That's not the sort of ending unexpectedly you want to emulate. The key is to surprise with unexpected value, insight and sometimes emotion.

Maxey also writes that "a pro is ready to edit on the spot." This means that if you think you are going to have 30 minutes to give a presentation and then you are told at the last minute that you only have fifteen minutes, you aren't going to whine and complain to the organizers or the audience. Because you have such a deep grasp of your subject matter and the needs of your audience, you can instantly figure out what to cut from your speech and still make the strongest impact on your audience. The highest level pros may even go so far as having a second PowerPoint ready with a drastically reduced number of slides just in case the time for the speech has been reduced.

"Present Like A Pro" also does a great job of chronicling all the different times, places, and ways in a speech where speakers apologize. Now I have often admonished speakers to avoid apologizing in speeches, but Maxey and O'Connor say it best when they advise "Don't include apologies at any point unless the roof falls in."

These authors do an excellent job of crystallizing the highest goals for the advanced speaker; it isn't about avoiding um's or having well structured content. Ultimately, a speech by a professional is about the experience created for the audience.

"The Experience is what an audience wants and needs." Yes, Yes, Yes--and this doesn't just apply to so-called motivational or feel-good speakers.

Thousands of books have been written on how to give a good speech. "Present Like A Pro" is one of the rare books in the genre that will deliver the inside secrets you need to be a GREAT speaker.

Bad News for McEnroe: Blood, Sweat, and Backhands with John, Jimmy, Ilie, Ivan, Bjorn, and Vitas, by Bill Scanlon, Sonny Long, Cathy Long

In the golden age of tennis, when players were just learning how to become media personalities, men like McEnroe, Connors, Borg and Lendl ruled the court . Now in a tell-all memoir, former top 10 seeded tennis star and chief McEnroe rival, Bill Scanlon, presents an unfettered look at the good old days of tennis when some of the most colorful (and infamous) players in history went head-to-head and the game was changed forever.

Bad News For McEnroe is in part a revelation of the feud between McEnroe and the author that began when they were teenagers, but the essence of this book are the wonderful and surprising on- and off-the-court high jinks of such notable players as Vilas, Borg, McEnroe, Nastase and Connors, all of whom Scanlan played and knew intimately, from locker room fights to on-court breakdowns and blow-ups. A story that could not have come from anyone but a true insider, Scanlan's tale of life on the pro tennis circuit will shock and delight tennis fans everywhere.

From Publishers Weekly
Scanlon, a top 10–ranked tennis player in the 1980s, wrote this book partly as a retort to John McEnroe's 2002 autobiography, You Cannot Be Serious. While he deftly depicts "brat-packers" like Jimmy Connors, Ilie Nastase and, above all, Mac, his attitude toward the successful McEnroe—whom he played on numerous occasions—might strike some as a severe case of sour grapes. McEnroe's antics were "an act, a contrived tactic of someone who would do anything to escape losing," Scanlon writes. But the book isn't all gripes. Scanlon discusses the impact new technologies had on tennis in the '80s and pays homage to the unsung heroes behind the scenes: the coaches, officials, tournament directors and even sports psychologists who try to keep the players mentally stable. What Scanlon does best, however, is dish. The in-fighting among the athletes is reminiscent of cartoon characters going at it, blowing each other up and coming back in the next episode to start all over. Happily for readers, Scanlon is no reformer, just a not-so-humble former player turned writer.

From Booklist
Scanlon was a top-10 tennis player in the 1980s and can claim victories over eight number-one-ranked players. His career encompassed tennis' golden age, when talented personalities took the game from back-page summaries to headline fare. The sport quickly became a big-money entertainment venue with intense press scrutiny, and charismatic bad boy McEnroe was always in the middle of it. Scanlon's title may have readers thinking the book is designed as a response to McEnroe's entertaining but self-serving You Cannot Be Serious (2002), but it's more than that. Jibes toward McEnroe may outnumber those directed at anyone else, but Scanlon's larger purpose is to offer an insider's view of the tennis explosion and the volatile, larger-than-life personalities who fueled it. He describes the increased public recognition, the ever-growing prize money, and the changes in equipment, training methods, court strategy, and coaching. Typically, the enduring appeal of the game itself outlasts the popularity of its stars, but Scanlon describes an era when a sport was eclipsed by its stars. Great reading for tennis fans. Review
"Bill Scanlon is the fly in John McEnroe's eye, the darting pesty pain that sends a highstrung young man to the outer limits of his temper."
- Washington Post

"McEnroe was determined not merely to win but to teach Scanlon a lesson. I had never seen him actively and deliberately go after another player before."
- Richard Evans, McEnroe biographer

Advantage Scanlon!
By Abacus
This is an excellent book. The book is short and very well written. As a result, it reads as easily and quickly as just a few long articles from a tennis magazine. It is a lot more than just a rebuttal to McEnroe's book "You Can't Be Serious." McEnroe's book, although greatly entertaining was pretty much about McEnroe and not much more. Given whom McEnroe is, that still made for fascinating stuff. This book is not so much about Bill Scanlon, an extremely talented but unknown name outside tennis. Nor is it so much about McEnroe. It is much more about what Scanlon describes as the Golden Era of tennis (70s and 80s) in which he was privileged to participate.

Scanlon, in the shadows of the titans of the sport, had an incredible career that crossed paths with most of the superstars of the modern era. When he got started, he faced a mature Ilea Nastase (10 years his elder). Near his twilight, he faced the new teenage wonder - Andre Agassi. In between, he played against all the demi gods of the games, including Borg, Vilas, Connors, McEnroe, Gerulaitis, Lendl, and even the younger generation of near mythological characters: Becker, Edberg, Wilander.

This book is extremely insightful. The chapters about the fights for the control and governance of the game between the WTC, MIPTC, and the emerging ATP are fascinating. Some of these absurd fights culminated back in 1973, when 79 players boycotted Wimbledon, and Jan Kodes, an athletic East European better known for his clay court performances won Wimbledon due to a truly impoverished men's draw.

Chapter 4 on equipment is also very interesting. It discloses how in the late seventies and early eighties modern graphite racquets took the tennis world by storm. This caused a near crisis for most of the existing stars whose game had been developed with wood racquets. Scanlon shared that none of these stars adapted well to the change. And, this included both McEnroe and himself. The oversized stiffer racquets facilitated the modern power game that left touch players behind.

Scanlon noticed that while Nastase's tantrums affected his results, McEnroe's tantrums helped his. McEnroe's tantrums were well timed just to break an opponent's hot streak. More often than not, McEnroe's tantrum strategy worked. It allowed him to regain his footing in a match and beat his opponent. Thus, contrary to what McEnroe suggested in his own books, that is tantrums were outbursts of his own angered perfectionism; Scanlon suggests they represented an unfair strategy to beat opponents. I have little doubt that Scanlon is right. Thus, while McEnroe's theatrics were often hugely entertaining for the crowds, they must have represented a real pain in the neck for all his tennis opponents.

There is also a lot of entertaining stuff, including the exploits of Vitas Gerulaitis with the ladies. This is one aspect that both McEnroe and Scanlon books have in common. Both players/authors were quite awed by the amount of energy Vitas could exhibit on and off the tennis courts. Apparently, Vitas could easily handle a near sleepless night and win the Australian Open the next day. I am not so sure he could do that today. Marat Safin and Mark Phillippoussis are trying Vitas hedonistic route to success. But, so far they have frittered away their respective immense talent. And, they are both running out of time.

The book includes many more themes and topics equally interesting to the few I described above. If you like tennis, you'll love this book. I obviously have to also recommend McEnroe's "You cannot be serious." It is an excellent book too, even though it is narrower in scope than this one.

Whines as Much as McEnroe
By Rick Spell
As an avid tennis player and reader I looked forward to his book. While I enjoyed watching McEnroe and enjoy his broadcasting ability, I can't say I'm much of a fan of his outsized ego. You'd think this book would therefore be much to my liking. Unfortunately, I only found this book mildly entertaining. There are a lot of subjects I liked but nothing that makes this a compelling exciting read for the average fan. Tennis aficionados may still want to read however.

After a brief background Scanlon supports his book title by attempting to hook the reader by blasting McEnroe's gamesmanship in their matches. But unlike Brad Gilbert's book with quality matches against McEnroe and Becker, Scanlon's case is weak as he RARELY beat McEnroe. It almost projects an image of envy spending so much time commenting on McEnroe and frankly, using it in the title to sell the book. Well, it worked in getting my money. OK, McEnroe's an @ss. Now let's move on. But he keeps coming back to it to where eventually it's pitiful.

The book really isn't about Mac other than in a tabloid manner. That's just an excuse to write a memoir about tennis in its greatest era. There is a very good chapter on the evolution of racquets and how that unnerved players who began with wooden racquets. Also, a chapter on fitness focusing on Navratilova and Lendl are quite interesting as well as a chapter on coaching and the evolution of the tennis entourage. But another dear subject to Scanlon which tends to lose the reader is the evolution of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals). Substantial time is spent here with a chapter on the controversial head Hamilton Jordan. Then we have a complete retelling of the battle inside the tennis establishment. This will be interesting only to people with interest in the business side of tennis.

Would I read this book again? Yes, but I love to read and love tennis. For the casual fan, I couldn't recommend this book. It covers subjects of interest to Scanlon but not in my opinion in a cohesive manner to entertain a casual fan. And, at the end of the day, I found the constant whining about the whiner McEnroe to be beneath the type book Scanlon was trying to write.

Review

“Rowlands succeeds in his aims remarkably well. Not only is each chapter a model of philosophical exposition, conveying philosophical ideas with exemplary verve and clarity, the book also manages to connect the philosophy to the movies in a natural and convincing way.... The irreverent style combines the folksy with the rigorous, the shallow with the deep – and philosophy needs all the humor it can get.” ―Times Literary Supplement (U.K.)

“Rowlands has a light touch. . . . Overall, this manages to be diverting without destroying too many brain cells, which is probably what you want from a holiday read.” ―The Guardian (U.K.)

“Hugely entertaining. . . . Rowlands knows his stuff and marries some of the tougher philosophical arguments to the more accessible conduit of popular entertainment . . . enjoyable and illuminating.” ―Waterstone's Books Quarterly (U.K.)

“The discussions are serious, but the tone of the book is irreverent; there are laughs for both newcomers and old hands.” ―www.listology.com

“Some bits made me laugh out loud. . . . He has an excellent way of explaining complex ideas and terms. After reading quite a lot of Nietzsche (in my wayward youth especially) I think that Rowlands does a better way at explaining him than the man himself!” ―www.scifimoviepage.com

Good Book for any Sci Phi Fan
By Dianne B. Nesbitt
The only problem I had other than not agreeing with all of his philosophical points of view is that there is a book titled "the philospher at the end of the universe" (philosophy explained through science fiction films) by Mark Rowlands. I bought both, now I have 2 copies of the same book. Other than that error, the philosphical ideas presented were explained as well as an immature and slightly ignorant philosopher like me could almost understand. The point however is that philosphy is a debatable subject, with pros and cons to subscribing to anyone idea. So as for me I will take the middle road agreeing with those aspects of each philosphy I agree with while at the same time understanding and sometimes finding validity in the contradictating philosphy. All in all I was happy about the book and feel a little smarter for it. It wasn't a boring book about philosphy provided your not expecting explosions, alien races conquiering our planet, and just want to know a little about topics such as (why be moral),(is it possible to have a personal identity),(how do we know the world around us isn't just imaginary), (why death isn't that bad, as it can give meaning to our life). Or if you want to have some ammunition for anyone that thinks science fiction is dumb, or (gasp) people that like it are dumb. The author likes Arnold Schwarzenegger movies to explain some of his ideas, the typical violent blockbusters that make artsy fartsy people turn their nose up. So read the book a few times but I recomend discussing it with people thats why he wrote it, I guess.

Best PHI book ever

Mark Rowlands is the man. He was actually my professor so I am very biased in favor of him. Reading this book will be like taking a highly challenging and intellectually stimulating intro to philosophy course at a reputable school, namely the University of Miami where he now teaches. A Great read, and a unique perspective and way to teach the sometimes boring yet intriguing discipline of philosophy.

Divided Minds: Twin Sisters and Their Journey Through Schizophrenia, by Carolyn Spiro, Pamela Spiro Wagner

Growing up in the fifties, Carolyn Spiro was always in the shadow of her more intellectually dominant and social outgoing twin, Pamela. But as the twins approached adolescence, Pamela began to succumb to schizophrenia, hearing disembodied voices and eventually suffering many breakdowns and hospitalizations.

Divided Minds is a dual memoir of identical twins, one of whom faces a life sentence of schizophrenia, and the other who becomes a psychiatrist, after entering the spotlight that had for so long been focused on her sister. Told in the alternating voices of the sisters, Divided Minds is a heartbreaking account of the far reaches of madness, as well as the depths of ambivalence and love between twins. It is a true and unusually frank story of identical twins with very different identities and wildly different experiences of the world around them.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This harrowing but arresting memoir—written in alternating voices by identical twins, now in their 50s—reveals how devastating schizophrenia is to both the victim and those who love her. The condition, which afflicts Pamela (an award-winning poet), can be controlled with drugs and psychiatry, but never cured. When the twins were young, Pamela always outshone Carolyn. But in junior high, Pamela was beset by fears and began a lifelong pattern of cutting and burning herself. After the two entered Brown University, Pamela's decline into paranoia accelerated until she attempted suicide. During the ensuing years of Pamela's frequent breakdowns and hospitalizations, Carolyn became a psychiatrist, married and had two children. Empathetic and concerned, Carolyn nonetheless conveys her overwhelming frustration. and occasional alienation from her sister, when she is unable to help. Pamela's schizophrenia caused their father to sever his relationship with her. Remarkably descriptive, Pamela's account details how it feels to hear voices and to suspect evil in everyone. Though she struggles with her medications, Pamela remains a committed poet and is now reconciled with her father and close to her twin. 8 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

From Booklist
For many, the idea of being one of identical twins--and possibly the possessor of telepathic communicative powers--sends chills up the spine. Add certifiable schizophrenia to the potent emotional state of identical twinship, and the potential for nightmare magnifies. In their disturbingly powerful memoir, however, the Spiro sisters reveal all this as the stuff of their everyday reality. Explosive encounters with one another, other family members, friends, and medical professionals are recounted with jarring straightforwardness. Alternating recollections about being half of a pair of youngsters growing up in the 1960s highlight the sisters' individual personalities while they relate sisterly connections, competitiveness, and co-option. When Pamela's illness emerged at the beginning of adolescence and subsequently spiraled out of her control, it became a virtual separate entity that taxed the limits of the sisters' relationship and continues to test their endurance. This memoir probably afforded its authors great therapeutic value, but readers struggling with schizophrenic family members may find it too graphic. Donna Chavez

Must read!
By Scarlett O' Hara
This is a really good book. The ups and downs of Pam Spiro's mental illness (Schizophrenia)can really be felt while reading this book. She has endured so much because of her illness. Her identical twin sister Carolyn "Lynnie," who ironically became a psychiatrist, is Pam's main support, but she also endures so much because of her sister Pam's illness, and you can also feel her pain for her sister and for herself.

Coping with a family member that has a mental illness can be unbearable at times, and this is what the sisters demonstrate in this book with the details of their lives. Having someone special in my life newly diagnosed with a mental illness, I can relate to these sisters. Actually, this is the reason I bought this book, and I am glad I did. However, this book is a good read for anyone. It is very interesting, and it is very well-written.

Divided Minds
By Shirley May Jones
It's good for anyone who has a son with schizophrenia. I do. I didn't realize, when I read this book, how much difficulty a person with schizophrenia goes through. He's is taking care of me now. He goes to Circles of Care, every month for his medicine. He has been taking his medicine for going on fifteen years. I am grateful.

Also, this book is good for someone in Mental Health. They don't know what their missing.

Tarot and Osho a superb marriage
By Roberta Maxwell
I love all things Osho and that means this book is also. I love Tarot and use it as a daily tool in my practices. This book is a good accompaniment to the Spirit of Zen Deck. It offers a different spin than the standard Tarot definitions books. This is a more inspirational interpretation for those who are ready and willing to take a deeper look.

The Belles of New England: The Women of the Textile Mills and the Families Whose Wealth They Wove, by William Moran

The Belles of New England is a masterful, definitive, and eloquent look at the enormous cultural and economic impact on America of New England's textile mills. The author, an award-winning CBS producer, traces the history of American textile manufacturing back to the ingenuity of Francis Cabot Lodge. The early mills were an experiment in benevolent enlightened social responsibility on the part of the wealthy owners, who belonged to many of Boston's finest families. But the fledgling industry's ever-increasing profits were inextricably bound to the issues of slavery, immigration, and workers' rights.

William Moran brings a newsman's eye for the telling detail to this fascinating saga that is equally compelling when dealing with rags and when dealing with riches. In part a microcosm of America's social development during the period, The Belles of New England casts a new and finer light on this rich tapestry of vast wealth, greed, discrimination, and courage.

From Publishers Weekly
The huge, largely abandoned mill buildings of northern New England towns are the remnants of an industry that dominated the region and transformed the lives of its inhabitants, especially the women, for slightly more than a hundred years, beginning in the early 19th century. In broad, descriptive strokes, Moran, formerly a writer and producer for CBS News, recounts the rise and fall of the New England textile industry, from Francis Cabot Lowell's first 1814 mill in Waltham, Mass., to the flight South in the decades after WWI of mill owners seeking a haven from labor unions and the reasonable working conditions the unions had won. The enormous social changes wrought by the textile industry are the subject here, especially in the lives of women, whom it freed from servitude on the small farm only to bind them to the looms. Later, the mills' voracious appetite for workers attracted a vast influx of immigrants from Ireland, Quebec and eastern Europe, while generating enormous wealth for owners like the Cabots and the Lowells, who became the aristocracy of New England. The story of the mills as evoked here, with all its ironies, energy and tragedies, reflects the larger America these factories helped to shape. 16 pages of photos unseen by PW.

From Library Journal
This is a history of the textile mills of New England, the women who worked them, the owners who ran them, and the environment both physical and social in which they operated. A popular history written in a folksy style, it leaves out the analysis a scholarly treatment would provide but offers citations and a bibliography to give it authenticity. Moran tells the stories of many of the largest mills (in Lowell, Lawrence, and Waltham, MA), from their founding by Boston Brahmins to their ultimate demise in the 20th century. The longest section of the book deals with Irish and French Canadian immigration to these mill towns and the desperate attempts by these immigrants to make a life in their new surroundings. Difficult relations with the Yankees, isolation and discrimination, anti-Catholic violence, and monstrous health and safety conditions prevailed, making for engaged yet troubling reading. Moran's narrative of the workers' attempts to improve their lot through labor organizing and strikes is especially good. Moran is not a historian but a CBS News producer and journalist, and this is distinctly not a book of professional history. The author makes unnecessary comments about modern social issues and tangents that lead well beyond the scope of the topic. But his book is an excellent read, both gripping and informative. Recommended for all public libraries. Bonnie Collier, Yale Law Lib.

From Booklist
Moran writes of the extraordinary social change brought by the coming of textile mills to New England by gracefully combining scholarly research with artful storytelling. In 1814 when Francis Cabot Lowell built his first mill, women worked at home, theirs or someone else's. A factory job offered women workers new freedom, but the mills also presented an opportunity for exploitation and nineteenth-century corporate greed that rivals the worst of today's. Immigration changed the demographics of the workers from local farm girls to Irish, French Canadian, Pole, and Italian immigrants, and labor practices that began benevolently enough quickly deteriorated into dangerous situations as the desire for greater profits grew. The high-minded first families of New England found their fortunes tied to the labor of lower-class women, and, even worse, the product they made used southern slave-picked cotton for its raw material. To make amends, mill owners endowed colleges and museums, but they also cut wages. This detail-rich blend of women's, social, and labor history should not be missed. Danise Hoover

Before you complain about YOUR job, read this book!
By A Customer
The next time I complain about MY job, I'll try and spend a moment thinking about what it was like to work in the mills described in this excellent book. Deafness, arthritis caused by repetitive hand motion, young children put to work because their families were desperate for money, fires in the mill, job-related injuries, long hours of work, poor ventiliation and light - you name it.
I heard about this book while watching C-Span and today I'm ordering a copy for a friend in New England whose long-ago relatives came from Canada to work in the mills.
It has strengthened my resolve to visit Lowell, Mass. and see what has been preserved.
It's fascinating and enjoyable to read - I'm just glad I didn't have to live through the experience myself. Highly recommended.

Disappointing for this reader
By Jeannie Mancini
Although there are some very interesting tidbits to learn about the New England cotton mills written in Moran's Belles of New England, there was very little about the GIRLS themselves. The author takes you way beyond the life of the girls and digresses heavily into the realms of the mill owners, and of the many immigrants who traveled from Europe for various reasons, coming to America to gain jobs in the textile industry. Briefly mentioning why the immigrants were important would have been plenty, but the reader must endure long paragraphs of the history of Ellis Island and that immigrant story as well. You find unending pages regarding why the Irish immigrants came to the mills after leaving their homeland out of desperation caused by the potato famine crisis. Another chapter with ongoing descriptions on why the French Canadians similarly crossed the border at a time when their economic status sent people scurrying for mill jobs, was also very tedious to read. All of this could have been condensed down to a few passages explaining why this was essential to the story of the mills, not a hundred pages of it!

This historic account takes place before the Civil War when issues of slavery in the South played a great part for the cotton mill factories. But again, the author spent way too much time informing the reader of the New England views on slavery, and how this effected local areas who were either for or against abolition including personal views from the local people questioning the right to use slaves to pick the cotton they wove. Some of this is of course relevant to the importance and history of the mills, but not to the extent the author injects into this book.

I was greatly disappointed in this book due to all the other miscellaneous historical facts I wasn't expecting to get. I really was looking for a book full of quotes, memoirs and descriptive details pertaining to the thousands of women who worked 14 hour days by the sweat of their brow running the machines and living in communal boarding houses. The initial plan from the fore founders was to provide a society for female self improvement that would allow the ladies to become financially independent and in turn help them to move on to going to school to better their lives. I did not get very much of that at all. I found that these pages and pages, chapters and chapters filled with nonpertinent trivial history more than enough for anyone interested in the women's part of this story.

I also feel the need to comment on the hundreds of typing errors in this book. It was truly deplorable how many mistakes there were! The book needed severe editing! If you are a woman, or researcher who is looking for a good deal of information on the women in the mills, I can't say I'd recommend this book at all. If you want a book full of just plain history of the people and the places where the mills are located, and how these people affected New England manufacturing, politics and society in the early 19th century, you might get something out of it. I believe the title was very misleading and can't say on the whole I enjoyed this book.

Readable History
By R. Crowley
A fascinating topic with many parallels to today's influx of immigrants and the goal of gender-equality in the work place. This book is written the way history books should be written: readable and entertaining, and therefore informative and thought-provoking. Pay no attention to pedantic criticisms that author Moran is not a "historian" but rather a journalists; that is nonsense. Just read, learn, and enjoy.

Love Signals: A Practical Field Guide to the Body Language of Courtship, by David Givens

A world renowned anthropologist explores the nonverbal signs, signals, and cues human beings exchange to attract and keep their mates. As a medium of communication, Love's silent language predates speech by millions of years. Today, we still express emotions and feelings largely apart from words. The postures, gestures, and facial cues of attraction are universal, in all societies and cultures.

According to Dr. Givens, courtship moves slowly though five distinct phases: attracting attention, recognition phase, conversation phase, touching phase, making love. Since potential mates "test" each other before uniting as one, courtship is a choreographed give and take of signs granting physical and emotional closeness.

Love Signals is part enthnography and part how-to. Dr. Givens documents the little courting rituals witnessed in elevators, on subways, and in the workplace. He examines the essential role the face plays in courtship and how it can be optimally displayed. He decodes the body to find silent messages given off by shoulders, neck, arms, hands, waist, calves, ankles, feet, and toes. Dr. Givens analyzes expressive shapes, colors, and markings encoded in arm wear, shoulder wear, leg wear, and shoes. He deciphers the background messages of spaces, places and interiors to learn how environs help or hinder in the meeting process. Chemical cues emanating from aromas, tastes, steroids, sterols, and hormones strongly shape a partner's feelings, so they are explored as well.

The book suggests ways to gaze, ways to read eyes across a room, and ways to sit, stand, align, walk dress, and lift a drink to participate in the fascinating adventure of finding, winning, and keeping a mate. Knowing the unspoken vocabulary of love signals will give readers an edge. What this means for courtship is that the reader becomes able to read unspoken motives, emotions, and feelings with great clarity and precision. The more readers know about the nonverbal idiom of attraction, the more likely they will find a loving, lasting partner.

How to find your love - and keep it
By Giancarlo Nicoli
This book is a blend of three parts: 1 - research studies on the subject of human behaviour, especially applied to courtship and mating; 2 - direct, field observations by the author; 3 - how-to manual to find a partner (how to wear, how to behave, how to speak, how to move... and so on).

I'm fascinated by human behaviour, I read other books on the subject. Soon after the purchase, I quickly delved into it. Although some of the studies described here are already well-known, others aren't - that's why appreciate it.

Did you know that courtship has five phases? They are: «(1) Attention, (2) Recognition, (3) Speech, (4) Touching, and (5) Lovemaking. Each phase has its own signs, signals, and cues. Since potential mates `test' each other before uniting as one, courtship is rarely hurried. Moving too fast - giving too many signals at once or showing them out of phase order - may frighten a partner away. Universally, patience is the key».

This a practical book. What's written here is feasible by everyone.

Caveat: when I say that what's written here is feasible by everyone, I don't mean this is an easy book. Many people will understand this book, but not everybody will. In this book, the author talks human behaviour, neuroanathomy, ethnography, anthropology; you find here things such as `conjugate lateral eye movements', `isopraxism'... and so on.

I think to this book as an example of the cultural divide - if you understand (and apply the findings of) this book, you have a wide advantage over those who don't understand it: but that's another story...

I give it four stars instead of five because here and there there are less interesting parts, the quality and the insightfulness of the prose is not even. Sometimes it's a rather dull reading.

Now, a few quotations:

"In courtship, palm-up gestures are psychologically friendlier than palm-down cues. (...) Our closest animal relatives, the chimpanzees, greet each other with compliant, upturned palms to show `I'm friendly'. For human beings everywhere, gesturing with an upraised, opened palm is a convincing and time-tested way to say `Trust me; I mean no harm.' Throughout the world, palm-up cues captivate, charm, and psychologically disarm partners who may be unsure of each other's intentions."

"(...) before speaking to an unfamiliar man or woman you [should] establish a baseline of familiarity. This prepares the partner by laying psychological groundwork in which a new relationship can germinate. Before you ask the nice-looking Safeway clerk for a date, go through the clerk's checkout line to build familiarity. Establish eye contact, smile, bow your head forward, head-nod in agreement, and show an open palm. Three visits in as many days activate the familiarity effect. The odds that he or she will agree to take an espresso break with you dramatically improve. Repeated physical proximity over short periods of time converts you from `just a stranger' to someone who is better known and `liked'."

"Courtship works on a principle of luring. Instead of chasing, cornering, and capturing a mate, you emit `come hither' signals and await a response. You hold back initially and play what amounts to a waiting game, in which lure, not seize, is the rule."

Enough said. To learn more, go have your copy.

Codebook of Non-Verbal Courtship
By kthdimension
Dr. Givens presents us with a readable compendium of his research into non-verbal cues characterizing modern courtship. Although Givens rounds the bases on a number of topics, such as the importance of the face, the way & why we attract -- and why we are attracted to -- certain body types, as well as suggestions on how to remain together, the crux of the book is his discussion of the five phases of courtship: 1) Attracting Attention, 2) How to Read the Gleam in an Eye, 3) Exchanging Words, 4) The Language of Touch, and 5) Making Love.

At times, it is difficult to determine who the target audience is, especially when he juxtaposes scientific jargon and anthropoligical history with cue lists, anecdotes, & field notes --- this, however, shouldn't deter the would-be reader that shares Givens' perspective: "In courtship, knowledge is power. Knowing that gestures work better than words give you a clear advantage in finding a mate" (p.21).

I would absolutely recommend "Love Signals" to anyone who wishes to enjoy the intellectual discussion behind the science and psychology of attraction and/or for anyone who wishes to become better skilled at reading people's body language (as well as being aware of their own "signals" they are sending out).

As a professional matchmaker, I see that people who are cognizant of other people's "nonverbal" signals have a greater likelihood of success in dating and in their relationships. In this book, Givens provides valuable tips to his readers on how to recognize interest from members of the opposite sex (e.g. noticing that people lean towards whatever - or whomever - they find most important at the time, that people's eye blink more and tend to dilate when they are interested in someone, etc.) while also offering practical tips on how to "create" interest (e.g. how to use your voice, colors, etc. to create an attraction/send certain signals).

Occasionally, the read can be a little dry and - as one reviewer here comments - photo illustrations over drawings might have enhanced the book a little. Overall, however, I really enjoyed "Love Signals" and would highly recommend it.
